A complicated movie about the Central Intelligence Agency and its agents, The Good Shepherd isn't your typical spy movie. Though it stars Matt Damon (The Bourne Identity films) and Angelina Jolie (Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Lara Croft franchise)--actors with considerable experience in the action-espionage genre--The Good Shepherd requires that they play more subdued and (much less interesting) characters here. The movie focuses on the career or Edward Wilson (Damon), a privileged Yale graduate who goes on to help found the CIA. He is a quiet, serious, and guarded man, even in the most intimate moments with his civilian wife (Jolie, in a role that wastes her talent). Set against a backdrop of real-life events such as the Bay of Pigs, The Good Shepherd is meticulous in creating a realistic timeframe. The film gets a jolt of excitement when Robert DeNiro (in his first directing role since 1993's A Bronx Tale) peppers the screen with appearances by Joe Pesci, Alec Baldwin, and William Hurt. But those moments are too infrequent. At 157 minutes long, the film is crammed with many factual details, but the characters are shortchanged when it comes to development. Viewers have to wonder why anyone, much less someone like Wilson who has everything going for him, would devote his life to a thankless job that brings so little happiness to himself and his family. The Good Shepherd is an ambitious but flawed film. The actors do a formidable job with a well-intentioned but meandering script. However, we meet so many characters and learn so little about each that it's difficult to drum up much empathy for any of them. --Jae-Ha Kim

Description

Matt Damon, Angelina Jolie and Robert De Niro star in this powerful thriller about the birth of the CIA. Edward Wilson (Damon) believes in America, and will sacrifice everything he loves to protect it. But as one of the covert founders of the CIA, Edward's youthful idealism is slowly eroded by his growing suspicion of the people around him. Everybody has secrets…but will Edward's destroy him? With an all-star cast including Alec Baldwin, Billy Crudup, William Hurt, Timothy Hutton and John Turturro, it's the gripping story David Ansen of Newsweek hails as "spellbinding."

4 out of 5 stars Fun Spy Flick.......2007-09-17

I saw this movie in the theaters when it was out and really enjoyed it. I always like Matt Damon in this type of role and all though Angelina Jolie's was a small role she did it beautifully. Matt Damon always seems to get himself stuck in some kind of conspiracy and has to fight his way out. It is the type of role besides Ocean's Eleven Comedies that he has been born for. I would recommend renting this flick.

1 out of 5 stars alternative .......2007-09-10

try "The Company", from TNT. More accurate portrayal of what really happened in the CIA's early days.

I wish I could travel back in time so I could stop myself from watching this movie and go get a cow branding on my a*s instead.

4 out of 5 stars Know In Advance This Is Not An Action Film.......2007-09-07

I had a huge advantage before watching this on DVD. I was told by a good friend that it was extremely slow, and be prepared to be bored out of "my mind." Well, I wasn't bored, maybe because I now expected a slower, non-action-packed CIA-type film....and I wasn't disappointed. Actually, I liked it, mainly because of the cinematography. This is stunning in its photography. Kudos to Director Robert De Niro and Director of Photography Robert Richardson for their work in here.

I also appreciated the low profanity in here. After watching "The Departed," this far-cleaner film was a treat for the ears, too. Yes, there are a handful of 'f-words," but not much else including no blasphemy.

The story winds up presenting an interesting question which is posed to Matt Damon's character, "Edward Wilson." He plays an extremely loyal CIA man, a guy who is straight-arrow and one whose priority is country-first. The dilemma occurs at the end when he must choose between what's best for his son or his country.

It's a thought-out, interesting story that takes a few sides to the left of center more than the right, but is not really a movie with any heavy-handed political agenda, mainly pointing out what it takes to be a successful "spy" and that this unemotional detachment can be rough on some people and their families.

This movie, I suspect, will either put you to sleep or fascinate you.

5 out of 5 stars A Parable for our times.......2007-09-04

I saw more in this movie than a story about the CIA. I saw an exaggerated tale of what many men close to power, whether in the business or political worlds, go through to achieve their business ends. Yes, family and a semblance of humanity are not always sacrificed, but there are those -- call them workaholics, drudges, whatever -- to whom work and order are more important than family and friends. These men enter a cerebral world where they have to live by something not taught at Yale -- their wits -- to survive.

These men (and some women) are all around us. There are decisions made thousands of times a day to put business or political objectives before family and friends, though not always with the dramatic alienation that this movie depicts. But every such decision, compounds over time to produce alienation from loved ones. This movie offers a tale of how a bright and apparently sensitive young man can be molded into a husk of himself by devotion to "pleasing his superiors" and success at all costs, rooted in a 'love of country'.

Matt Damon gives a particularly fine performance.

On a lesser scale of importance, the movie provides a much-needed public airing of the connections between the Bonesmen and the CIA.

2 out of 5 stars Sleep-Inducing.......2007-08-31

I have three things to say about this film:

1. The pace was so incredibly slow that the film was rendered unenjoyable. I get that it was intended to be serious, but it was serious to the point of stagnation. It was serious like a graduate school lecture is serious, but not particularly enjoyable.

2. The lighting was too dark. Again, I get that it is supposed to be a film with a dark, grave subject matter, but I would also imagine that the audience is supposed to be able to actually see the film. I found myself squinting and wishing that someone would turn on the lights.

3. The characters left me cold. I was unable to care about any of them, even Angelina Jolie, and I usually like Angelina Jolie. I just found myself wishing that the film would end. It had a high "so what" factor. This was compounded by the long length and overly complicated plot.

I really liked Robert De Niro's previous directorial effort, "A Bronx Tale." Delightful film. What happened?

Description

Robert De Niro, Sharon Stone and Joe Pesci star in director Martin Scorsese's riveting look at how blind ambition, white-hot passion and 24-karat greed toppled an empire. Las Vegas, 1973, is the setting for this fact-based story about the Mob's multimillion-dollar casino operation, where fortunes and lives were made and lost with a roll of the dice.

5 out of 5 stars Is it just me..........2007-04-28

...or is this the darkest black comedy ever made? I just find Casino so amusing and funny that I hardly even notice the grim violence and harrowing drama. I also think that Casino is far, far superior to the over-rated Goodfellas. Even though it's longer, it passes in a breeze. Casino is just so colorful, multi-layered and intricate despite it's apparent simplicity. The film has three different characters narrating the story but none of it feels like exposition and it's never over-bearing.

Adapted from a true story, the film focuses on the fictional Tangiers Casino in Las Vegas. The boss is Sam 'Ace' Rothstein, his wife, volatile hustler Ginger and his psychotic 'friend' Nicky Santoro. All they needed to do was to keep the cash-flow at the Casino steady to satisfy the bosses back home. But it was just never meant to be. And everything implodes at the end.

Casino is filled with dozens of sub-plots, tangent stories and brilliant side-characters. James Woods is especially funny as a lowlife con-man who can't even win a fight with a ten-year-old girl. Vinny Vella also amuses as long-suffering Artie Piscano. But it's Sharon Stone who walks away with the movie. Despite starring opposite loads of well-established male lead actors she owns Casino. She was absolutely robbed at the Academy Awards when they gave the Oscar to Susan Sarandon. Stone delivered a performance so authentic that it's truly unfair the amount of criticism she gets for her other, less-important films.

The violence will satisfy gore fans. In this lovely film we have a dope with his head in a vice (after getting icepicks in his balls), a truly brutal beating with baseball bats, some moron getting a pen shoved into his neck and a cheater getting his hand mashed by a hammer. Don't let this put you off, that was the old Vegas. Nowadays you just get told not to come back.

I know most people will call it sacrilege to condemn Goodfellas but Casino is just the better film of the two, plain and simple. Better lighting, far more impressive cinematography and more entertaining characters. It just has so much going for it that Goodfellas did not.

The 1080p HD DVD is absolutely stunning and is surely reference quality stuff. The Dolby Digital+ sound is also amazing and there are plenty of extras. A total must-have.

3 out of 5 stars A good performance from Sharon.......2007-04-24

At 178 minutes long, I was expecting to be bored throughout this film, despite everyone raves about this film, along with Goodfellas. And although I did get a bit restless during it, I did find myself sucked into the film and actually trying to work out what was going to come next.

It starts off with a shocking scene, and then is told in retrospective (or so you think), from ten years previously. I certainly sat up straight up when the film started, as this is the scene you're not expecting. Although when it's repeated towards the end, it does tend to go OTT, by showing it from every angle, and showing the viewer what exactly happened.

Visually, the film is very bright, with the neon lights of the casino, and Robert De Niro's colour blinding suits (who puts pink & orange together?!) Honestly when he first walked onto the screen, I thought his wardrobe was made up by a colour-blind person, as most of his suits were OTT bright, or clashed severely. The brightness of the casino is so well done in HD, you almost start to feel like you're there, it's so real, and captures the bright lights of Vegas perfectly.

I thought Sharon Stone's role was the best out of the entire film, as her character goes through such a journey during the film, and the physical changes in her character are shocking. Her character of Ginger is an ex-hooker, who marries Robert De Niro's character, despite not loving him in the slightest. I think she was seeing dollar signs before her eyes. She becomes a mother, and also turns to drink, which ultimately, leads to a shocking end.

This film is definitely not for the fainthearted. There's a closeup scene of someone snorting cocaine, and Sharon's character, Ginger, snorts some in front of her daughter. The F word is said a grand total of 422 times, a bit unnecessary, including in the narration, which makes it a total of 2.4 times per MINUTE on average. The chain smoking is quite harsh as well, as Robert De Niro constantly had a cigarette in his hand in nearly every single scene. (I pity any non-smoking crew on set.) It was necessary to portray what it was like in those days, when smoking was considered classy, and not frowned upon as it is today. I expected there to be some continuity problems that accompanies a chain-smoking character but Robert always held his cigarettes the same distance from the lit end so that their lengths never appear to change.

This film impressed me, and I can imagine it looks so much better in HD, so it would definitely be better than the old regular DVD. But everyone lumping it along with Goodfellas doesn't bode well, cos everyone HAS to like Goodfellas it seems. It's definitely one to watch on HD, and with a TV that's more like a cinema screen would be good too!

5 out of 5 stars A pretty good movie.......2007-03-12

Overall, I enjoyed the movie very much. It was much better than I expected it to be. The picture was good and it is one of my favourite mafia movies. I would say it is worth the money to go get it. Joe Pesci did a great job playing part of the mafia.

4 out of 5 stars What a picture ! .......2007-02-19

I mean that statement in two ways. First, in my humble opinion, this is Martin Scorcese at his finest. This is better than Goodfellas by a wide margin. All of the regulars give awesome performances in this (even Sharon Stone, who I can't stand!). If you like mafia pictures, this is the BEST one to own. I also mean that it's a great picture due to the fact that it's on HD-DVD. The picture is astonishingly vivid and clear and the lights of Las Vegas really jump out of the television. It's almost 3-D ! The extras are ample, but I'd say adequate. That's the reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5. There is the obligitory commentary, deleted scenes, and a couple featurettes. It's all whipped cream and a cherry on top of an excellent sundae ! I do like that you can watch the extras and the movie at the same time with commentary running. This and Batman Begins are the reasons you should own an HD DVD player ! Note: I have the HD DVD drive attached to my Xbox 360 and it works brilliantly !

5 out of 5 stars Scorsese Scores [ 7 l 7 l 7 ].......2007-09-14

I probably haven't seen this movie for about, oh, five years. Now after watching it again, I remember why it was so unforgettable. From the actual Casino, to the acting on all parts... this movie is complete.
Success(Taxi Driver) after success(Raging Bull) after success(Goodfellas). In my opinion Scorsese is one of the top three movie directors of all time at showing us, what it's like to be a gangster. Just over this last year, I've watched all of Scorsese's movies more than twelve times each(next on the list, Casino).
Robert De Niro in the late 80's and early 90's for me, was a gangster. I was twelve years old when I first watched this and trust me that's what he was in my eyes. Now I just see him as one of the best actors of his generation. From award wins to being flat out hilarious, I envy the talent he has.
Joe Pesci(My Cousin Vinny) and Sharon Stone(Basic Instinct) melted on and off screen during their careers. I like them both as actors and individuals. Resembling a sorta couple of two-faced/thieves such as Bonnie and Clyde. Contributing everything to the supporting cast. Although, one thing I do think of whenever I do watch this movie; is how that I think this was the last great film in both of their careers. It's a movie to watch for that reason alone.
Imagine watching the Scorsese film "Goodfellas", excluding and including a couple of faces, with new characters and new settings. And that's what you get, better badder gangsters. It's pretty much of what would've happened if "Goodfellas" had a happy ending.
De Niro, Pesci, Stone, Scorsese, Gangsters, and Gambling. If one of these names or words triggers a part of your brain when reading, watch "Casino". It's a classic for all of these reasons.
I don't know if this review will be that helpful, or new in anyway. But it's nice to encourage to have fun. "And that's that"
GoodFellas The Departed (Two-Disc Special Edition) My other two most favorite Scorsese films today.

4 out of 5 stars Casino - Review.......2007-07-24

Martin Scorsese paints a colorful portrait of Las Vegas in the early 1970s as the oasis of glamor and corruption that it was. Against this backdrop, the story chronicles the rise and fall of three central characters: a play-by-the-rules casino owner with mob connections (Robert De Niro), his childhood friend and Mafia underboss (Joe Pesci) and an ex-prostitute with expensive taste and a driving will to get what she wants (Sharon Stone).

5 out of 5 stars Casino.......2007-07-03

We received our purchase in a timely manner and it was is good shape. This was a pleasant experience.

5 out of 5 stars What a film.......2007-07-02

The downfall of this empire is a beauty to watch. This film is actually terrifying in its realistic portrayal of how the greatest of things can crumble to mere...crumbs. This film is a powerhouse, a knockout, it is phenomenal in its storytelling, acting (which is too realistic), direction (Martin, baby) and poignant ability to make you believe that this can happen to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-06-25

Casino is a underdog for sure, it did get some awards and whatnot but it did not do as well in the public eye as say Goodfellas. But enough of that, the movie was well written and Sharon Stone was phenomenal in this true story about a real casino boss Frank "Lefty" Rosenthal, play as Sam "Ace" Rothstein (De Niro). It was Flimed in Las Vegas in front of the (now tore down)Landmark Hotel and flimed in the Riviera. The Flim was based on the Stardust Casino & Hotel(also now tore down). Some great acting all around with Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, James Woods, Alan King, and Don Rickles. Not the best, it's almost as good as Goodfellas but still a 5-Star Classic. (Sorry about Grammar!)

Amazon.com essential video

Director Martin Scorsese reunites with members of his GoodFellas gang (writer Nicholas Pileggi; actors Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, and Frank Vincent) for a three-hour epic about the rise and fall of mobster Sam "Ace" Rothstein (De Niro), a character based on real-life gangster Frank "Lefty" Rosenthal. (It's modeled after on Wiseguy and GoodFellas and Pileggi's true crime book Casino: Love and Honor in Las Vegas.) Through Rothstein, the picture tells the story of how the Mafia seized, and finally lost control of, Las Vegas gambling. The first hour plays like a fascinating documentary, intricately detailing the inner workings of Vegas casinos. Sharon Stone is the stand out among the actors; she nabbed an Oscar nomination for her role as the voracious Ginger, the glitzy call girl who becomes Rothstein's wife. The film is not as fast paced or gripping as Scorsese's earlier gangster pictures (Mean Streets and GoodFellas), but it's still absorbing. And, hey--it's Scorsese! --Jim Emerson

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Another excellent "mob" movie from Scorsese.......2007-09-05

"Casino" is a "mob" movie set in 1970s and 80s Las Vegas.

It's from the same team behind "Goodfellas" - Martin Scorsese (director and co-writer) and Nicholas Pileggi (co-writer and writer of the original book) and even includes the incomparable Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci in the lead roles. It is very similar in style and tone to this earlier film.

This similarity detracts from its impact somewhat but "Casino" is still a very good film. It contains many memorable moments, good music, and is stylishly directed by Scorsese.

2 out of 5 stars James Fontanetta.......2007-08-28

This movie was a disappointed. I think it was overrated. I expected a lot more. If you want to see great films in the same genre, try Goodfellas, Donnie Brasco, The Godfather

5 out of 5 stars True story.......2007-08-26

Ace Rostein retired to Florida and now owns a restaurant. However this is his story of life as a mafia bookmaker and later casino operator back when the mafia ran vegas.

Corey Cotta, Author of All of Yesterdays Tomorrows.

5 out of 5 stars You thought I was laying it...........2007-07-14

Casino is based on the true story of Ace Rothstein and Nicky Santoro as they become part of the decline of the mafia's stronghold on the Vegas gambling scene. De Niro and Pesci deliver some of their best performances as their frienship quickly turns into a rivalry, leaving them with some harsh decisions to make. You can also expect a solid/hilarious performace courtesy of Lester Diamond (James Woods), who creates quite a few problems for Rothstein in addition to his casino issues.
This film will grab you from the openeing scene until the closing credits. If you are a fan of mob movies then this is a must see.

I would recommend renting this flick.

try "The Company", from TNT.

Robert De Niro stars as an American intelligence operative adrift in irrelevance since the end of the Cold War--much like a masterless samurai, a.k.a. "ronin." With his services for sale, he joins a renegade, international team of fellow covert warriors with nothing but time on their hands. Their mission, as defined by the woman who hires them (Natascha McElhone), is to get hold of a particular suitcase that is equally coveted by the Russian mafia and Irish terrorists. As the scheme gets underway, De Niro's lone wolf strikes up a rare friendship with his French counterpart (Jean Reno), gets into a more-or-less romantic frame of mind with McElhone, and asserts his experience on the planning and execution of the job--going so far as to publicly humiliate one team member (Sean Bean) who is clearly out of his league. The story is largely unremarkable--there's an obligatory twist midway through that changes the nature of the team's business--but legendary filmmaker John Frankenheimer (Seconds, The Manchurian Candidate) leaps at the material, bringing to it an honest tension and seasoned, breathtaking skill with precision-action direction. The centerpiece of the movie is an honest-to-God car chase that is the real thing: not the how-can-we-top-the-last-stunt cartoon nonsense of Richard Donner (Lethal Weapon), but a pulse-quickening, kinetic dance of superb montage and timing. In a sense, Ronin is almost Frankenheimer's self-quoting version of a John Frankenheimer film. There isn't anything here he hasn't done before, but it's sure great to see it all again. --Tom Keogh

One of the best spy movies made in recent years. DeNiro delivers as he always does. An alleged former CIA agent hunts down a wanted IRA terrorist. All well appearing to be a gun for hire tracking other terrorists. Great action.

5 out of 5 stars Ronin is great in all areas.......2007-07-30

Ronin, which features several superbly done car chase scenes is one of the better movies I have purchased in a long time. This movie is a masterpiece of storytelling and stars Robert De Niro as a man who hires on with a special collective group of people with various skill sets to apprehend a silver case that a man is transporting. There is turmoil in the ranks and you never know what is around the next corner or who the next person to stab you in the back will be. Amazing, and I mean AMAZING car chase scenes that rival the old Bullitt film starring Steve McQueen which up to this movie was not really challenged with that. There are intense moments that take place all throughout France including a great scene at a figure skating venue. Five stars because this truly is great storytelling and acting.

5 out of 5 stars Car chase spectacular!.......2007-07-25

OK not the best action movie out there, but for $4.99 at wholesale club a terrific buy! Crank up the 5.1 stereo and hold on. If you don't love car chases don't buy this movie, it's full of 'em. This is an action packed, shoot em up blast. Goes well with the Bourne series. Enjoy the squealing of those tires!

3 out of 5 stars Watchable.......2007-07-13

If not for De Niro and Jean Reno, I wouldn't have imagined what the movie would have been. The plot was almost predictable. Sean Bean added some colour to the movie. The action sequences weren't exactly fantastic although I will have to give the writers some credit for executing some rather clever parts in the movie. Still worth watching though.

(Additional note: the digital video disc has a "layer switch," allowing you to watch the entire film without interruption.) --Jim Emerson

4 out of 5 stars PRETTY GOOD MOVIE.......2007-06-13

I ENJOYED THIS FILM. IT WAS ENTERTAINING FROM START TO FINISH. GREAT CAST,GREAT STORY,AND TRULY A CLASSIC.I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS FILM,A MUST SEE!!!
