A glossy romantic comedy, The Best Man centers on four college friends and the women in their lives, all brought back together for a wedding. Taye Diggs (How Stella Got Her Groove Back) plays the title character, a young writer whose first novel is a barely fictionalized account of his college days, featuring barely fictionalized versions of all his friends. This novel hasn't yet been released, but ambitious TV producer Nia Long (Soul Food) has snagged an advance copy in the hopes of getting an early interview with Diggs. Unfortunately, when this advance copy begins circulating among the college gang, they discover it reveals some secrets that may have a disastrous effect on the wedding. The Best Man features a handsome, charming cast and a propulsive story, but the female characters are poorly developed and the male banter is, to say the least, chauvinistic. This banter is mostly to comic effect, but by the end it still leaves a sour taste that the movie's happy ending doesn't counter. With a particularly strong performance by Terrence Howard as an aimless but relentlessly honest member of the college quartet. --Bret FetzerCustomer Reviews:

Tristar Donnie Brasco (Blu-Ray) (Widescreen, Extended Edition)Amazon.com
Based on a memoir by former undercover cop Joe Pistone (whose daring and unprecedented infiltration of the New York Mob scene earned him a place in the federal witness protection program), Donnie Brasco is like a de- romanticized, de-mythologized version of The Godfather. It offers an uncommonly detailed, privileged glimpse inside the world of organized crime from the perspective of the little guys at the bottom of Mafia hierarchy rather than from the kingpins at the top. Donnie Brasco is not only one of the great modern-day gangster movies to put in the company of The Godfather films andGoodFellas, but it is also one of the great undercover police movies--arguably surpassing Serpico and Prince of the City in richness of character, detail, and moral complexity. Donnie (Johnny Depp, a splendid actor) is practically adopted by Lefty Ruggiero (Al Pacino), a gregarious, low-level "made" man who grows to love his young protégé like a son. (Pacino really sinks into this guy's skin and polyester slacks, and creates his freshest, most fully realized character since his 1970s heyday.) As Donnie acclimates himself to Lefty's world, he distances himself from his wife (a terrific Anne Heche) and family for their own protection. Almost imperceptibly his sense of identity slips away from him. Questioning his own confused loyalties, unable to trust anybody else because he himself is an imposter, Donnie loses his way in a murky and treacherous no-man's land. The film is directed by Mike Newell, who also headed up Four Weddings and a Funeral and the gritty, true crime melodrama Dance with a Stranger. --Jim Emerson

For a sex comedy, Bart Freundlich's fourth feature Trust the Man takes many of its cues from 1980s-era Woody Allen, but is neither as sexy nor as funny as intended. It's the tale of two couples. Rebecca (Julianne Moore, Freundlich's real-life wife) is an actress. Her husband, Tom (David Duchovny, Moore's Evolution co-star),
is a stay-at-home dad, much like Patrick Wilson's character in the considerably darker Little Children. The Manhattan dwellers have two kids. Fellow New Yorker Elaine (Maggie Gyllenhaal), an aspiring author, lives with Rebecca's brother, Tobey (Billy Crudup, sporting an ill-advised goatee), a sports writer. They've been together for seven years. Elaine is ready for marriage and a baby; Toby, not so much. Both men have roving eyes, Tom for single mother Pamela (Dagmara Dominczyk) and Tobey for ex-girlfriend Faith (Eva Mendes), a newlywed. Rebecca and Elaine, in their sincerity, may be more sympathetic, but all they ever seem to talk about is their unsatisfactory sex lives. Naturally, something has to give and it does--for all four. On the downside, Trust the Man finds Freundlich in a bit of a holding pattern. In retrospect, domestic drama The Myth of Fingerprints, Freundlich's first film, is still the writer/director's best. Though James LeGros and Duchovny pal Garry Shandling provide amusing cameos, the main reason to catch Trust the Man is for Duchovny himself in his most fully realized role since the inimitable Agent Fox Mulder--oddly likable despite his many faults. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Product Description
At 6pm on April 20th, 1992, Roger Taylor, Brian May and John Deacon, the surviving members of Queen, took to the stage of London's legendary Wembley Stadium to announce the start of one of the biggest events in rock history, organised by Queen themselves to pay tribute to their former colleague - the incomparable Freddie Mercury. The atmosphere of emotion, mixed with joy and sadness, shared by stadium audience, worldwide television viewers, and performers alike, was an experience that will never be forgotten Queen had invited some of the greatest musical talent in the world to join them in paying tribute to Freddie, who tragically died of AIDS on the 24th of November, 1991. The aim of the concert was to celebrate Freddie's life and work, but also to increasepublic awareness of the awful disease which prematurely ended his life. A bonus result was a huge and still growing sum of money raised by the event and its spin-offs which has provided funds to help fight AIDS worldwide ever since. All the guest artists offered their participation for free. The concert was broadcast live on television and radio to 76 countries, from the USA to Russia, and all proceeds, then and now, go to the Mercury Phoenix Trust, a charity formed at that time whose charter is the relief of suffering from AIDS throughout the world. The 72,000 people who were fortunate enough to see the concert live did so in glorious Spring weather in front of a stage 370 ft wide by 90 feet deep. The Stage was flanked by scaffolding towers over 80 ft tall, and crowned at the centre of the proscenium arch by a giant Phoenix - a symbol from Queen's crest designed by Freddie in 1969, and now the emblem of the Mercury Phoenix Trust. It is a lasting tribute to be shared by all. Profits from this DVD will be donated by the Mercury Phoenix Trust to AIDS charities; thank you for buying it.Customer Reviews:

I Trust You to Kill Me
Starring: Kiefer Sutherland Manufacturer: First Independent ProductGroup: DVD Binding: DVD Similar Items: ASIN: B000JBXHZK Release Date: 2007-01-09 |

It's too bad Jack Bauer was busy solving an international terrorist crisis. As seen with unflinching eyes in this wickedly entertaining documentary, Kiefer Sutherland could have used the organizational powers of his 24-star alter-ego to help him with his duties as road manager of a burgeoning rock band. Sutherland is exposed as steadfast devotee of Rocco DeLuca & The Burden as he tries his best to manage the details of the band's brief winter, 2005 tour of Europe. In addition to his career as a famous actor, Sutherland is also co-founder of the indie record label Ironworks Music, and as I Trust You to Kill Me proves, he's clearly the #1 fan of Ironworks' up-and-comers Rocco DeLuca & The Burden. The band's tour of small clubs took them to London, Dublin, Reykjavík, Berlin, and points in between. Director Manu Boyer lets his camera linger over the best and worst of it all. Some of the worst is of Sutherland as he ineptly (but utterly sincerely) tries to pump the band up at every opportunity, whether it's doing radio promos, hauling heavy amps into a London nightclub in the freezing cold, or slyly handing out tickets in Dublin pubs and street corners for an undersold show. It's hilarious to see him simultaneously exploiting and enjoying his celebrity status with passersby--some of whom know who he is, others only vaguely realizing that they ought to know who he is. Director Boyer also does some nosy prodding into Sutherland's private life, especially after he's hefted a few pints (the clip of Sutherland taking a drunken running dive into the Christmas tree in a posh London hotel was brief a YouTube smash after the film first aired on VH-1). We see the crawling-up end of the rock 'n' roll lifestyle from Sutherland's point of view and from the band's. Though it's certainly not the best rock concert movie, there is some terrific footage of The Burden performing their bloozy brand of rock behind DeLuca's raw wail. In spite of Sutherland's "help," the band may have a good chance at gaining a following. I Trust You to Kill Me (the title of The Burden's first album) documents both a personal journey for Kiefer Sutherland and a glimpse at the hardscrabble of a band clawing their way up. On both counts it's great fun and a terrific piece of rock 'n' roll entertainment. --Ted FryDescription
Kiefer Sutherland, star of the hit TV show "24" takes his indie record label act, Rocco DeLuca & the Burden on the road for their first international tour. From Los Angeles to Europe, this highly personal journey chronicles a rock band & their less than qualified road manager, Kiefer Sutherland, and the hopes, successes and disappointments of a band trying to get their music to their audience.Customer Reviews:

The term suspension of disbelief was invented for the idea that Ryan Phillippe could be a computer genius. As Milo, a slacker brainiac recruited by smilingly ominous software giant Gary Winston (Tim Robbins) to help build a global communications system, Phillippe still looks like a million bucks. He is also still doing the clenched, pouty grown-up voice that he always uses to show that he means business in this acting stuff (he's nothing if not earnest), and a pair of designer glasses completes the transformation. He's well matched in Antitrust by Claire Forlani, who, in turn, spends time pursing her lips and squinting her dewy eyes as Milo's troubled girlfriend, an artist who proves to be a liability when Milo discovers that Winston is killing off clever competitors like a dot-com führer. Robbins, looking like David Letterman, seems willing to either take his role dead seriously or goof around a bit, but director Peter Howitt doesn't know how to play any of it (the actor was better used as a grinning madman in another flawed paranoid thriller, the underseen Arlington Road). Without any underlying menace or enough satirical bite to keep it interesting, the whole thing slips by passively in a mindless matinee kind of way until the over-the-top finale. Production designer Catherine Hardwicke has had some big, glossy fun creating Winston's campus and ornate private kingdom, and there's the cheapest of kicks in seeing Robbins's Bill Gates taken down publicly, but the film is definitely junior league. --Steve WieckingDescription

Director Kazuhiro Furuhashi has recut the four-episode Samurai X OVA into a seamless feature that serves as a prequel to both Samurai X: The Movie and the light-hearted TV series. The action unfolds in 1864, at the beginning of the revolution against the Tokugawa Shogunate that culiminated in the Meiji Restoration. The orphan Shinta is transformed by master swordsman Hiko into Kenshin, an assassin who believes he is using his sword to bring about a better world. When he and the mysterious Tomoe hide from the intrigues of Kyoto in a remote mountain village, Kenshin finds peace, raising crops and savoring the passage of the seasons, but this tranquility cannot endure. Furuhashi choreographs the characters' inner conflicts as skillfully as the epic sword fights, infusing them with an elegant sensuality. In either format, Samurai X OVAs capture the violence and poetry of samurai culture in a story of exceptional emotional depth. (Rated 17 and older: violence, alcohol use, mature themes) --Charles SolomonDescription
Nineteenth century Japan: a land torn by rebellion and civil warfare; small bands of soldiers roam the land, seeking to overthrow the tyrannical Tokugawa Shogunate. Enter the young orphan Kenshin, trained as a fighter by the master swordsman Hiko. Kenshin's desire for peace is at odds with his brutal life, and the tension seems unreconcilable until he meets a mysterious woman named Tomoe. The enigmatic Tomoe's actions may show Kenshin that another life can exist for him, or may instead conceal a destructive secret. Samurai X: Trust & Betrayal Director's Cut follows the progress of the rebellion against the Shogunate and the complex evolution of Kenshin's and Tomoe's involvement, and reveals how Kenshin received the distinctive cross-shaped facial scar that gives the film its name.Customer Reviews:
