Suspenseful Thriller.......2007-02-04

Cloris Leachman, the real star of this film, plays a housewife from a family that appears to be upper middle class family. She is called to serve on Jury Duty and eagerly accepts. She does this for she feels that it is her right to make sure justice is served.

The real suspense starts when her excitement turns into suspicion, then fear, as she discovers the truth about the case. That the defendant is innocent, she knows who the real murderer is, and the murderer knows she is on the jury. This is a decent TV thriller of yesteryear and worth watching one afternoon.

A "Suspence" TV Movie Produced 30 Years Ago.......2004-12-21

This movie was reproduced in low quality EP mode by Front Row Entertainment in 1995. The TV movie was produced in 1974. It is an above average TV movie and is truly suspenseful with a plot twist that I have never seen before. It is a murder mystery starring Nick Nolte, Cloris Leachman and Laurence Luckinbill.

"Death Sentence" doesn't really star Nick Nolte.......2001-08-15

The real stars of "Death Sentence" (originally a 1972 Movie of the Week entitled "After the Trial") are Cloris Leachman and Laurence Luckinbill. Nick Nolte is in the picture, though in a relatively minor role as a man on trial for the murder of his wife. Leachman is a bored housewife who's thrilled to have been picked to be on the jury ("I think this is the first time I've ever felt like a full-fledged member of this community!").

Her excitement turns to fear, though, when the unfolding evidence begins to indicate that someone close to her may have actually committed the murder. The suspense culminates in a middle-of-the-night confrontation during (what else?) a raging thunderstorm.

Description

This collection of episodes from the live telecast STUDIO ONE contains two installments concerned with panic and fear. "The Night America Trembled" dramatizes the panic caused by the original radio broadcast of "The War of the Worlds." The reading is delivered by Edward R. Murrow and the ensemble cast offers glimpses of numerous young faces including Vincent Gardenia, Ed Asner, and Warren Beatty. Another young face is visible in "Sentence of Death" as James Dean stars in the tale of a convicted felon.

Orson Who?.......2007-08-25

You know, in the entire "Night America Trembled" the words "Orson Welles" are never heard. I actually went back and played it through again to be sure. The character is split into two - the director and the star, and in his out-of-character sign-off is referred to only as "your host" (Welles names himself in the original). Now what I want to know is, was that Welles' demand of the show to remove his name, or the show's idea to exspunge his involvement (and who were they trying to kid in doing so)?

Otherwise a very compelling drama. Too bad George Clooney's attempt to revive the genre (Fail Safe) didn't succeed. Now live drama is "Big Brother". How far we have fallen.

Falling UFOs and Rising Stars.......2006-06-09

The first time I heard about Orson Welles' 1939 debacle of the Mercury Theater's broadcast of "War of the Worlds" was in 1975, when a TV movie called "The Night That Panicked America" aired. Little did I know that eighteen years earlier, a shorter and much more intense TV movie aired about the same event. Perhaps it was because this TV-movie was aired in a more innocent time that Welles' original programme seemed more palpable. I actually felt for the first time that 'maybe' had I just turned on the radio that Sunday evening in October of 1938, I too would have been peering out my window to see if any octopus-men from Mars were scampering down my street. As warm and intimate as live radio broadcasts were in the 1930s and 40s, live TV of the 1950s somehow made entertainment seem even more intimate and real. This is the first DVD that I've seen of the "Studio One" series, and I'm looking forward to seeing more. I have to admit, "Sentenced To Death" didn't blow me away, although it was still a fun experience. "The Night America Trembled" did blow me away, and it had the added fun of seeing familiar faces such as Edward R. Murrow, James Coburn, Warren Beatty, Ed Asner, Warren Oates, John Astin and Vincent Gardenia. Do watch the movies with the commercials; Westinghouse's praise for atomic power is a definite chuckle as is their cheesy-looking refrigerator, but I have to admit... I wish TV commercials were still like that! No fifty images per-minute trying to sell you a 'cool' image. At least back in the 1950s, they were really trying to sell you a product! This DVD is a great evening's entertainment as well as a historical look at who we were as a nation some fifty years ago.

They are neither movies or videotapes; they are cleaned up, digitally remastered, original kinescopes (the archival film made from the flickering image on the monitor) to show you what type of free, no-holes-barred theatre you could watch in the infancy of television. Because these were live productions done a few years before videotape (roughly between 1953 and 1957) these films are the only record of the performances- dramatic exhibitions with Jackie Gleason, Art Carney, and Ralph Bellamy; character studies from James Dean and William Shatner; and intoductions to future stars like Warren Beatty, Edward Asner, and Steve (called 'Steven') McQueen. Especially poignant is an annoyingly short documentary on the 10-year show hosted by some of its guest actors: Charlton Heston, Jack Klugman, and Cloris Leachman (who makes an especially heartbreaking commentary that many of the actors never got to watch their performances because the kinescopes were burned in their vaults years ago). There is also a marvelous sound byte from the late great John Frankenheimer (who reveals he would've continued to direct television theatre but *had* to turn to movies when the network's president decided to unilaterally cease doing the live play and concentrate on the filmed sitcom). The CBS "f-stop eye" logo is shown, along with original show bumpers (including a 1956 presidential election preview) and the legendary Betty Furness Westinghouse commercials (one of which demonstrates the new, UHF-channel plug-in adapter!!).

Nostalgia Plusssss.......2003-04-10

For a decade (1948-58)in early television, Studio One was one of the stalwarts of live drama, producing some truly classic television, along with a few monumental duds. This set (available separately as well) brings together some very interesting examples. Nostalgia buffs will get a kick out of seeing actors like James Dean, James Coburn, Warren Beatty, Steve McQueen, and William Shatner, to name a few, in VERY early roles (look for Ed Asner as "background"). But there is much more than nostalgia at work here. "The Defenders", "Laughmaker", and "The Night America Trembled" hold up as good, even, "Defenders", great, drama. "Sentence of Death" has some fascinating things to say, even if it says them less than perfectly. And "The Square Peg" shows why live comedy was often so hard to do. The picture quality is, at best, watchable (these are kinescopes, after all) and some of the goofs live TV was prone to are "preserved". An added bonus is the inclusion of all the old Westinghouse commercials which are hilarious! (Imagine! A dishwasher that can do a whole days worth of dishes...at once! A guaranteed good time for those who know what they are watching.
