Writer/director Michael Landon Jr. continues in his famous father's footsteps by creating moral family entertainment set in the early days of the American prairie. Stubborn Marty Claridge (Katherine Heigl, Grey's Anatomy) travels west with her new husband--but after they find a beautiful patch of land, her husband dies in an accident before they've even started building. A man named Clark (Dale Midkiff, Air Bud: World Pup) makes a proposal: If Marty will enter into a platonic marriage with him, he'll pay for her passage back east in the spring. What Clark needs is a mother, however temporary, for his willful tomboy daughter Missie (Skye McCole Bartusiak, Beyond the Prairie, Part 2). Missie fights Marty's presence fiercely while Clark, though supportive, speaks few words, and Marty suspects she's made a terrible mistake--but time reveals otherwise. Love Comes Softly, based on the popular Christian novel by Janette Oke, is a romance, but Landon carefully avoids any bodice-ripping histrionics. Problems get solved perhaps a little too easily, but the movie is cleanly written, pleasantly understated, and respectful to its characters. For many viewers, Love Comes Softly will be a welcome change from overheated secular love stories. --Bret Fetzer

Description

Based on Janette Oke's best-selling book series, and directed by Michael Landon Jr., Loves Comes Softly is inspired story-telling for the whole family. Marty and Aaron Claridge (Katherine Heigl and Oliver Macready) travel west in search of new opportunity. But when tragedy strikes and Marty is suddenly widowed, the young woman must face the rugged terrain, bleak weather, and life among strangers-alone. That is until a handsome widower named Clark Davis ( Dale Midkiff) suggests a platonic "marriage of convenience" until Marty can return home. As the months pass, through, Marty and Clark discover an unexpected new love where there was once only loss.

4 out of 5 stars It's a Funny Thing.......2007-08-22

I will say this for the movie. It is a good movie, but it is based on what I think is a better book, and that always messes things up for me. I think if you have never read the book you will love this. If you have read the book then a couple of warnings. Minor or major details missing from this story or altered for some unexplained reason.
They changed Clem's name to Aaron. That didn't bug me so much as he was only in such a small part of it.
They aged Missy. Now, I'd have to check to be sure, but I think she was closer to four than the nine they had her in the movie. Again, I could be wrong.
They changed Clare's name. Now, that one worried me, since Luke is one of my favorite character's in the series along with Belinda's husband, Drew. They named Clare (who was named for Claridge, Marty's last name) Aaron Luke. I have since discovered that they do leave out Ellie and Luke. Probably Nadry and Clae too, but I wasn't looking for them. That is only relevant to the series as a whole, so I'll stop on that.
They left out a story, which I barely remember about a woman, whom I think was named Laura, who had a tragic life.
Like I said, the story as a whole was good, excellent if you have never read the book. The comparison comes up lacking, but franklyif you compare this to other movies they come up lacking. The lack of all sorts of objectionable things is very refreshing. A rarity that I wish I saw more of. As such, I will attempt to watch this series as I have had to watch some other movies made from books, as a simular concept that is good in it's own right, but is not the same thing. If you have or haven't read the book I recomend this movie, but just be warned if you have read it, things will not be the same, and that is a sad thing.

5 out of 5 stars Christian Love Story.......2007-08-13

My wife and I first saw this on television. We both liked it because it represented the Christian lifestyle in a positive, but not preachy, way. We saw a couple of the others in the series, and were taken by them, as well.

We highly recommend these romantic stories to Christian families. There are many fine lessons of love, hope, courage and faith in these films.

Spanning two decades and countless light years of interstellar adventure, Star Trek: The Motion Pictures Collection is a testament to the enduring goodwill of Gene Roddenberry's optimistic sci-fi concept. Long before Star Wars sparked an explosion of big-screen science fiction, Roddenberry had planned a second Star Trek TV series; the project fizzled, but its pilot script evolved into the first film in Paramount's most lucrative movie franchise. Despite its sluggish pace and bland "pajama" costuming, Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) offered a welcomed reunion of the "Classic Trek" cast, packed with Douglas Trumbull's still-dazzling special effects. Trekkers were even more ecstatic when The Wrath of Khan (1982) revived the spirit of the original series, even though director Nicholas Meyer was a Trek neophyte. With Leonard Nimoy directing, The Search for Spock (1984) began where Khan left off, with a thrilling (albeit contrived) obligation to resurrect the formerly ill-fated Mr. Spock.

A box-office smash, Nimoy's The Voyage Home (1986) is the franchise's most accessible adventure--a high point offset by William Shatner's comparatively dreadful Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989). Meyer (and his penchant for quoting Shakespeare) returned for The Undiscovered Country (1991), a conspiracy thriller that put the series back on track, inspiring fans to invoke the "even number" rule in rating their franchise favorites. Generations (1994) gracefully passed the torch to TV's The Next Generation, bidding farewell to Captain Kirk with honor and integrity intact. Highlighted by the evolving humanity of Brent Spiner's android Lt. Cmdr. Data, First Contact (1996) explored Star Trek history with a logical (hint) surprise encounter, and Insurrection (1998) provided an adequate expansion of the successful NextGen series. Taken as a whole, these ten films demonstrate the consistent vitality of Roddenberry's original vision, stoking any Trekker's appetite for "ongoing missions" in Nemesis and beyond. --Jeff Shannon Most of the feature films were released early in the DVD era, but are represented here in their vastly improved two-disc special editions, which boast widescreen anamorphic pictures, director's cuts of the first two films, numerous commentary tracks by cast and crew, humorous and informative trivia subtitle tracks by Michael and Denise Okuda, and a wide variety of new and vintage documentaries and galleries.

4 out of 5 stars Star Trek Movie Collection.......2007-07-22

The DVDs were without flaw (not always the case for Star Trek disks). As usual - The Voyage Home - & - First Contact - were the best. Paramount could have never made Insurrection and Nemesis and nothing would have been lost. The CGI in the last two are second to none but; the story line is wanting. If it were not for the last two movies I would have rated this collection 5 stars.

Set in a frontier world of bonnets and one-room schoolhouses, Love's Enduring Promise follows a headstrong young teacher named Missie (January Jones, Bandits), the daughter of Clark and Marty Davis (Dale Midkiff and Katherine Heigl) from previous prairie romance Love Comes Softly. After Clark injures himself in a woodcutting accident, the family farm is in danger of failing--until a handsome young stranger (Logan Bartholomew) helps out. Missie finds herself drawn to this man, but the intelligence and graciousness of young railroad magnate (Mackenzie Austin, How to Deal) appeals to a side of her that yearns to go beyond the hills and valleys of her childhood. What could be romantic froth becomes a quiet, well-paced, and thoughtful love story, thanks to a solid script, capable performances, and clean direction. Jones is particularly engaging; Missie could have been blandly virtuous, but Jones draws a rich and subtle range of emotions out of her scenes. Religious viewers will appreciate the movie's commitment to wholesome storytelling and clear moral perspective. Love's Enduring Promise, like Love Comes Softly, is based on a novel by Christian writer Janet Oke, though Love's Enduring Promise departs more from its source. --Bret Fetzer

Description

Clark and Marty Davis were caught in a "marriage of convenience" that over time turned into deep mutual respect and love. In this sequel, they now preside over a growing family in their little prairie house. But as they reach out to those in their frontier community, they discover that love is not limited by the size of a dwelling.

5 out of 5 stars Meaning of Love.......2007-09-05

I had seen this movie before and love it. It was well directed and because there were very unknown actors made it more interesting to watch. It showed during that time 2 people didn't have to be in love to marry but, through everything they go through love has a way of finding their heart. I really enjoyed this movies along with the other 2 that follows.

"When the legend becomes fact, print the legend." That's more than the code of a newspaperman in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance; it's practically the operating credo of director John Ford, the most honored of American filmmakers. In this late film from a long career, Ford looks at the civilizing of an Old West town, Shinbone, through the sad memories of settlers looking back. In the town's wide-open youth, two-fisted Westerner John Wayne and tenderfoot newcomer James Stewart clash over a woman (Vera Miles) but ultimately unite against the notorious outlaw Liberty Valance (Lee Marvin). Ford's nostalgia for the past is tempered by his stark approach, unusual for the visual poet of Stagecoach and The Searchers. The two heavyweights, Wayne and Stewart, are good together, with Wayne the embodiment of rugged individualism and Stewart the idealistic prophet of the civilization that will eventually tame the Wild West. This may be the saddest Western ever made, closer to an elegy than an action movie, and as cleanly beautiful as its central symbol, the cactus rose. --Robert Horton

5 out of 5 stars John Ford and John Wayne's eighth and penultimate Western together, an elegy for the passing of the Old West!.......2007-07-07

The critics panned THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE when it was first released in April 1962, Not least because it went over much of the same ground explored in FORT APACHE (1948). But the general public thought otherwise and the test of time has proved the latter right. Shot in black and white, with two obviously over-aged stars and mostly studio-bound the only concession to its day was the wide-screen aspect! Gene Pitney also had a huge hit with a song of the same name released at the same time but omitted from the soundtrack because John Ford was said to have hated it!

This dark-tale is of the Old West versus the advancing 20th Century. A train draws into the small western town of Shinbone the only passengers to get off, are Senator Ransom Stoddard (James Stewart) and his wife Hallie (Vera Miles) they are accosted by local reporter for `The Star' young Charlie Hasbrouck (Joseph Hoover) followed by his editor Maxwell Scott (Carleton Young). Stoddard reveals that they are in town for the funeral of an old friend Tom Doniphon (John Wayne). In the funeral parlour they find Doniphon's coffin guarded by his faithful black servant Pompey (Woody Strode). Scott persuades the Senator to give his account. Meanwhile ex-town-marshal Link Appleyard (Andy Devine) takes Hallie on a buckboard ride out to Toms burnt out old house, here they find masses of cactus roses in bloom, Link steps down and picks one for her.

Now back in Shinbone the story is then revealed in flashback - A gang led by Liberty Valance (Lee Marvin) ambushed Stoddard's stagecoach. He tries to defend a fellow female passenger but suffers a savage beating in the process and is left for dead. Tom Doniphon brings him to his girl friend Hallie Ericson at PETER'S PLACE (a venue for home cooking) at Shinbone after finding him on the trail! On discovering who attacked him Doniphon told Stoddard "Liberty Valance's the toughest man south of the Picketwire [River] - next to me". Stoddard is a lawyer by profession and is determined to bring Valance to justice he elicits the reluctant help of Marshal Link Appleyard and Shinbone Star founder and editor Dutton Peabody (Edmund O'Brien) in the meantime he helps out washing dishes and serving tables at PETER'S PLACE, he also runs a class teaching people to read and write, whilst telling them that `the pen is mightier than the sword'. One night Valance and two of his henchmen Floyd (Strother Martin) and Reese (Lee Van Cleef) burst into PETER'S PLACE hijack a table and generally causing trouble, Floyd gleefully points out to Valance, that he has spotted Stoddard waiting on tables. Valance trips Stoddard causing him to drop Doniphon's steak dinner on the floor. Doniphon and Valance square up for a gunfight after Doniphon ordered Valance to pick up the steak, but Stoddard picks up the steak to ease the situation, all concerned know sooner or later Valance will be back.

As the tension continues to mount Stoddard is helping out Editor Peabody who allows Ranse to hang his Attorney at Law sign outside the Star Newspaper Office, he is also going off and practicing with a six gun twice a couple of times a week. Tom Doniphon tells Hallie that he going north of the Picketwire [River] for some time horse-trading on his return he reports trouble brewing with the big ranchers who have recruited Liberty Valance and his henchmen to mess up the coming Territorial Convention for Statehood, Stoddard and Peabody are finally selected as the two delegates required whilst Valance was completely rejected. In an editorial Peabody blackens Valances name. Later Valance, Floyd and Reese beat Mr Peabody to within an inch of his life, Ranse sends the marshal to find Valance for a final showdown. Although Liberty wounds Ranse with his first shot - Ranse somehow manages to get off a shot, Valance falls to the ground and is pronounced "dead" in the street by Doc Willoughby. Stoddard is plagued by guilt and is only relieved when Doniphon fills in the missing details. Following the shooting of Valance, the wounded Stoddard is elevated to super hero known to all as "The man who shot Liberty Valance" he also wins Hallie's hand in marriage and goes back East to pursue a life in politics. Whilst having lost Hallie, a disappointed Tom Doniphon steps aside and retreats to into reclusive obscurity.

Stoddard having completed his story to the press was surprised when the editor tears up the script Ranse asked Scott "You're not going to us the story Mr Scott". "This is the West, Sir". Scott said. "When the legend becomes fact, print the legend". Finally Hallie left a cactus rose on Toms coffin as a symbol of their lost love. So with Donophin buried and their business concluded in Shinbone the Stoddards catch the train back to Washington they are welcomed onboard once again by the conductor Jason Tully (Willis Bouchey) Ranse thanks Jason for all his help and Jason replies "Nothing's too good for the man who shot Liberty Valance".

A fine cast with some great performances all round although the likes of Lee Marvin, Edmound O'Brien, Ken Murray and John Carradine "Ham it up a little". Whilst the two leads were in reality too old for their parts with the love interest Vera Miles being some twenty-odd years their junior, she however gives a beautiful restrained performance as the woman torn between two men! Ford too was on top form with the domestic scenes in Peter's Place cooking and serving up the dinner plate sized steaks to a full house followed up by the enevitable washing up - BRILLIANT!

It was near the end now for the most successful Director / Star relationship in making Western Movies. Ahead lay. "The Civil War" chapter of HOW THE WEST WAS WON (1962) and finally a non-Western DONOVAN'S REEF (1963). But Big John Wayne was far from finished, increditably over the next dozen or so years, another twenty-one films lay ahead, fourteen of them Westerns including his Oscar winning TRUE GRIT!

This Widescreen Collection DVD includes Sub Titles, Theatrical Trailer and Scene Selection. This film really deserves the full treatment of a Special Two Disc Edition with extras including Gene Pitney's title song. Nevertheless a must for all Western fans, others should enjoy it too!

4 out of 5 stars the man who shot liberty valance.......2007-06-27

The first time I saw "The Man who shot Liberty Valance" was on TCM.I was amazed at the casting of this fine old western and decided to buy it for my library of old movies. I was not disappointed. John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, along with Lee Marvin made this far better western than most movies were in it's day! It is fun to see all of these actors in their prime, doing what they do best! Thumbs up!!

5 out of 5 stars Best Western Ever!!.......2007-04-23

John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart come together to lead one of the most dynamic casts of characters ever put into a western movie.

Who really shot Liberty Valance?

In a story that speaks to true inner strength and humility, the question is answered after the strangest turn of circumstances sees Jimmy Stewart (Ransom Stoddard) rise from humble (almost cowardly) beginnings to become a very well-respected man of the community. It's only later in life that he learns he's made his name on the actions of John Wayne's character...

I don't want to spoil the movie for anyone who hasn't seen it, but one thing you learn in this movie is that things are not what they first seem. And that makes the movie WAY ahead of its time!

I am stoked to see it available on DVD.

This 1953 musical is very much a vehicle for Doris Day, in the title role, as a wild cowgal who can outshoot and outsing any boy on the range. When an actress arrives in Deadwood and uses her feminine charms on Jane's secret love, Wild Bill Hickock (Howard Keel), Jane tries to mend her tomboy ways. Not exactly up to the feminist code of honor, this is still energetic and Day is very perky. Of course, one could almost detect a homosexual undercurrent with the cross-dressing Jane, but this was Hollywood in the 1950s, so we best not. This won an Oscar for Best Song--"Secret Love," by Sammy Fain and Paul Francis Webster. --Rochelle O'Gorman

5 out of 5 stars Corny but fun.......2007-09-03

It has taken forever to find this movie, but worth it. I'd forgotten how corny it was, but I just love to hear Doris Day sing. Wish it wasn't so racist.

4 out of 5 stars Doris Day is outstanding as Calamity Jane in this musical.......2007-08-30

This musical was softly based on the life of Wild West fame Calamity Jane and her romance with Wild Bill Hickok. Calamity Jane (Doris Day) is a heroine of Wild West, she is bold, courageous, and ease at horseback riding and sharp shooting calls Deadwood, South Dakota as her home. The local salon, Golden Garter is a popular place for local men which provide entertainment by inviting well known female entertainers from the rest of the country. Wild Bill Hickok (Howard Keel) is another well known resident of the town, who frequents the salon. A Chicago entertainer named Adelaide Adams is a very popular lady among local men, and Calamity vows to bring her from Chicago (called "Chicagy" in the movie). Katie Brown a young maid for Adelaide Adams is mistaken for Adams and is brought to Deadwood. When folks at Golden Garter find out that the new entertainer is not Adelaide Adams, the anger turn against Calamity. Soon things turn for better when Calamity Jane and Katie become good friends, and Katie moves into Calamity Jane's cabin. The movie has a lot of action; sharp shooting, stagecoach riding, and fighting Indians in the Wild West. The movie ends on a happy note when Calamity Jane weds Bill Hickok, Katie marries her beau Danny Gilmartin. When Calamity's new husband finds a gun under her wedding dress, and she quips; it's just in case any more actresses roll in from Chicago.

The story successfully uses the singing talents of Doris Day, but the viewers who are used to sweet and very feminine roles played by Day in numerous movies can't help but think that Doris Day doesn't fit into the role of Calamity Jane. The less known facts about the story are that some historians dispute that Calamity Jane and Hickok were romantically involved. The movie recorded some classic songs such as; The black hills of South Dakota, The deadwood stage, I can't do without you, Secret love, and Windy city.

5 out of 5 stars Musical Western.......2007-08-23

Another good Doris Day movie. She makes a good Calamity Jane. Good music and good story line. Fun to watch.

5 out of 5 stars Doris Day=AMAZING!.......2007-07-12

I initally bought this DVD because our local theater group was going to put on Calamity Jane and I got the part of Calamity! I wanted inspiration and more insight into the character, and boy I got it! Doris Day was so great in this film, I never get sick of watching it! Howard Keel was great in it as well. I especially loved the dancing, singing, and Calamity's never-ending spunkiness! I give it 5/5 all the way! All musical fans need to watch this!

5 out of 5 stars biased for day.......2007-06-27

I grew up singing along with this movie, so I'm biased. I loved the romance, the love triangle [or square?], the singing and the sassy woman named Calamity. Humerous and just plain good fun.

One of the best action movies ever made, in a cleaned-up print restoring crucial parts of the story. No cavalry ever rode in with more epochal impact than the Wild Bunch in the legendary opening scene. Their steel-eyed leader, Pike (William Holden), and his robbers in stolen army uniforms help an old lady across the street, and then spark a massacre led by Pike's old crony Thornton (Robert Ryan), sprung from jail to hunt down his old gang. In just a few minutes, Sam Peckinpah sets the scene--a dusty Texas town in 1913--sketches a dozen vividly individualized characters, and choreographs one of the most realistic, influential, brilliantly photographed shootouts under the pitiless sun. The cast is superb (even Ernest Borgnine!), the dialog crackling, the bitterly ambiguous moral of the story hard-earned. It's the deeper, dark flip side to 1969's Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Consider buying the letterbox Wild Bunch, the review collection Doing It Right, and the Peckinpah bio "If They Move... Kill 'Em!" --Tim Appelo

5 out of 5 stars Violent groundbreaking Western. Not for the faint hearted!.......2007-08-04

THE WILD BUNCH (1969) In 1913 at the height of the Mexican Revolution an aging band of outlaws from the last century known as "The Wild Bunch", to fund their retirement decide on a last robbery on a dusty Texas town. Unbeknown to gang leader Pike Bishop (William Holden) and his right-hand-man Dutch Engstrom (Ernest Borgnine) a rival and former gang member and friend Deke Thornton (Robert Ryan) has the bank staked out, ambushing the gang as they try to make their escape after a most violent shootout the survivors head for relative safety across the Mexican border, with Thornton and his posse of roughneck bounty hunters in hot pursuit.

Once across the border the gang the gang head for a small Mexican border town where Freddie Sykes (Edmund O'Brien) is waiting for them with spare horses and saddles, here they discover that their loot from the robbery is made up of worthless steel washers. They then head for the Mexican village home of Angel (Jaime Sanchez) one of the gang members. Bishop learnt from the village elder that General Mapache (Emilio Fernandez) and his troops had attacked the village.

In an effort to restore their fortunes Pike Bishop and his men head for the headquarters of General Mapache (Emilio Fernandez) to sell their horses,
No sooner have they arrived, than Angel spotted his girl friend Teresa in the arms of Mapache, he draws his gun and shoots her dead, when things have cooled down General Mapache and his German advisors hire the gang to hijack a US arms shipment for a price of $10,000 in gold. Angel insists to Pike and Dutch that he's allowed to take one case to his village for their defence, they both agree.

The gang hold up the train only to discover that Deke and his posse our also on board the train. Following the successful hijack of the arms shipment they head back over the Rio Grande via a bridge, which they dynamite just as the posse, is crossing over. The posse was also being followed by a "green" US cavalry troop who had been acting as train guard. After a successful getaway, Pike, suspecting foul play arranges for arms to be delivered to General Mapache in stages delivering the first one his-self in exchange for part payment in gold!

By the time Dutch and Angel ride in for the final exchange big trouble is brewing not least because Mapache knows of Angel's double-dealing and takes him prisoner, Dutch pretends he doesn't care and is allowed to walk away. Back with the rest of the gang Pike decides to try and buy Angel back from Mapche with half of his share of the gold. Meanwhile Deke and his posse are breathing down their necks indeed Sykes has already been seriously wounded in the thigh!

Pike, Dutch and the two Gorch brothers (Warren Oates & Ben Johnson) set out for General Mapache's stronghold, on arrival they find a fireworks celebration in progress along with drunken debauchery, Mapache's car is driving around with Angel tied and dragged along behind the car with children running happily along behind! Pike demands that Mapache lets Angel go. He refuses, Pike and the gang retreat and take solace in local prostitutes, apart from Dutch who waits outside whittling on a piece of wood. Having had their fill of whiskey and women Pike rallies the Wild Bunch and they walk out four abreast into the sunshine heading across town. On arrival he demands of Mapache that he releases the moribund Angel, the General refuses at the same time cutting Angel's throat, which precipitates the last violent shootout. At the end of it all only two survive the adventure of crossing of the River Grande into Mexico, one of the hunted (The Wild Bunch) and one of the hunters (The Posse), but which ones?

Sam Pekinpah had already made the critically acclaimed RIDE THE HIGH COUNTRY aka GUNS IN THE AFTERNOON (1962) with those two Western stalwarts Randolph Scott and Joel McCrea. And although this film has a vastly expanded budget it still explores the same theme of men out of their time and place in the advancing twentieth Century! Brilliant Opening freeze-framed credits sequence to the sound of drums and cymbals as they ride past a group of Mexican children who are feeding live scorpions to a colony of red fighter ants. Several other set pieces are expertly handled most notable of which was the blowing up of the bridge over the River Grande The film was made midway through the Vietnam War and the American public by this time were used to scenes of violence on TV news reports. Many critics reported that the film merely reflected that violence. Still not to every ones taste then, or now!

This review refers to the Two-Disc Special Edition from Warner Bros. 2006 (The original directors cut) 139 minutes. Disc 1: The Film (restored) plus Sam Pekinpah documentary. Disc 2: Wild Bunch outtakes plus 3 documentaries. All represents Good Value for Money from Amazon.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Guy Flick!.......2007-08-03

One of the featured Amazon reviews, by a fellow named Wilson, alleges that after viewing this movie, "it is the quiet moments one remembers"...I DON'T THINK SO!!!

For me - and I'm sure for most people - it is the ultraviolent beginning and ending that make the film. What happens in between is less interesting.

William Holden plays Pike, the aging leader of a gang of outlaws. As the film opens, they are attempting to rob a train station that, they think, is receiving a large shipment of gold. They are being set up, however, and the station is surrounded by a motley crew of bounty hunters. A wild bloodbath ensues and the surviving gang members are chased into Mexico, where they hope to regroup.

Pike knows that his best days are behind him and looks for one last great robbery to retire on. Having become entagled in a Mexican civil war, Pike and his men agree to rob a train-load of rifles on the United States side of the border for a Mexican General. The General has promised them a very large sum of cash in return.

Ultimately, as the film climaxes, Holden's character leads the last surviving members of the Wild Bunch into battle against the Mexican General and his entire army. It is one of the greatest film endings of all time, with Sam Peckinpaugh's trademark violence exploding all over the screen. I can think of lots of adjectives to describe the ending battle scenes, but, if I had to pick just one, it would be: EXHILARATING!

My wife and I started watching this movie together but, about a third of the way through, she left the room. You've heard of "chick flicks"? This is definitely a guy flick!

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Top Four Westerns.......2007-07-12

The Wild Bunch is in the top four westerns of all time, the first being High Noon, the second being Shane, and then The Wild Bunch and last being Silverado. All four had a positive message in each of them even though The Wild Bunch had the most violence. I saw this movie when it first came out and being in my late teens early twenties it had a major impact on me it was just before going into the service with the war raging in Vietnam and the protests going on here in the United States, my generation never saw that kind of violence while we were growing up the actors got shot at and just fell down there was never any blood or bullet holes in the bad guy.
The message that I took from this movie and I still live by it today is best summed up by Pike and that is you do what is right no matter what, and you stick by your friends to the end.
Sadly in this day and age the younger generations that have followed don't it is all about them and what is in it for them.
The DVD looked great and there were a couple of scenes put back in that you don't see on TV.

4 out of 5 stars Bloody eye candy.......2007-07-03

This bloody extravaganza made Sam Peckinpah's reputation. A kind of fantasy of machismo set along the Texas-Mexico border around 1913--yes, very late for a Western--The Wild Bunch has thrilled adolescent boys and twentysomethings for almost four decades. The slowmo shots of horses falling awkwardly, of bodies squirting blood as they fall off of roof tops or cliffs, of tough hombres talking tough while they grab loose women and bottles of booze replete with numerous other bits of acrobatic mayhem amid some fantastic scenery makes this a non-cerebral feast for the eyes. The stars, William Holden (Pike Bishop), Ernest Borgnine (Dutch Engstrom), Robert Ryan (Deke Thornton), Edmund O'Brien (Freddie Sykes), etc. are first rate and on form. The plot is a variant of the old "one last job" story which begins with Pike's not-quite over-the-hill gang doing one last bank robbery.

Needless to say something goes wrong. Interspersed between the opening credits we see Pike's gang ride into town dressed as members of the US Army Calvary. On roof tops are some rascals and scallywags with rifles, missing teeth, and murderous gleams in their eyes. They are led by Deke Thornton, who it turns out is working for the railroad. What follows is a good old fashioned shoot 'em up of rather unlikely proportions as Pike's gang exists the bank with bags of loot, dodging and slinging bullets with abandon.

Turns out...well, no I won't say because I don't want to spoil the surprise. Suffice it to say, they need to do another job, this one a good old-fashioned train robbery with a few tricks and extras, like blowing up a bridge and running a locomotive at full throttle backwards. And then across the border into Mexico and some fun and games with Mexican generals, senoritas, banditos and such.

Been there, done that. But Peckinpah's colorful yarn has a few things you might not have seen before, and some of those things that you have seen, he did first and better. The Mexican color with a lot of authentic-looking extras doing authentic-looking Mexican activities was good. The fact that the Spanish spoken was not translated (and didn't need to be translated) was good. General Mapache (Emilio Fernandez) as the drunken, power-hungry warlord bandito was good. The kids feeding scorpions to the ants and then burning them was good. Edmund O'Brien as a degenerate Gabby Hayes kind of character was a hoot and a holler. But mostly this was about grim-faced men, toughened by long hours in saddle under the hot sun who, after decades of outlawing, finally ride gloriously into that last battle. Next stop: boot hill.

I watched the "original director's cut" that runs 145 minutes. At no time was my brain involved, but my eyes couldn't stop watching.

Description

West Texas in the years after the Civil War is an uneasy meeting ground of two cultures, one white. The other native American. Elvis portrays Pacer Burton. The son of a white rancher (John McIntire) and his beatiful Kiowa Indian wife (Dolores DelRio). When fighting breaks out between the settlers and natives, Pacer tries to act as a peace maker, but the "flaming star of death" pulls him irrevocably into the deadly violence.

Amazon.com

Definitely a contender for the underwhelming title of Best Elvis Movie, this handsomely shot Western actually makes Elvis act, rather than coast on his personality. (As though to underscore the point, the two obligatory songs are dispensed with under the opening credits and in the first scene.) Don Siegel was probably the best director the King ever worked with, and he draws a quietly smoldering performance from Elvis, who was still undeniably raw. Even better, Siegel captures an existential starkness to homestead and town, and calmly makes a pro-Native American case without preaching (Elvis plays a half-breed caught between sides in an Indian vs. settlers dustup). Yes, this was 30 years before Dances with Wolves--there were actually quite a few such movies during this era. All in all, a decent picture, and an indication of where Elvis's career might have gone if he hadn't given himself over to fluff. --Robert Horton

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Western with a difference.......2007-03-29

For Elvis fans this shows the King in a serious role as a half caste neither accepted by his white counterparts or the Indian comunnity. For its time it is a good account of how predudice can influence the opions of all. For classic movie lovers it is well worth seeeing as the cast in general is excellent (Steve Forrest, Dolores del Rio) and the story does have merrit. It is a good western and for Elvis fans a tear jerker as "Pacer" rides off in the sunset to die. 97 mins of entertainment.

5 out of 5 stars Flaming Star .......2007-03-08

This is one of Elvis's best movies. A movie the whole family can enjoy on a Saturday night.

5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good movie and performance.......2007-02-02

I can only concur with all the praise I am reading in these other reviews. I was completely unprepared for how good this movie is. I watched it only because it was an Elvis movie. During the credits, I wondered that there were only 2 songs listed. "How can that be?" But the songs were over 5 minutes into the film, and the rest was a masterful and suspenceful drama that I absolutely didn't expect to see.

The actors are all excellent. There wasn't anyone who seemed to be faking it or just going through the motions. Elvis is very believable in this role, and there are no excuses or apologies made for the feelings of anyone in the movie. This movie shows very much the ugliness that can happen when things go wrong and people band together based on color or background. Pacer, his mother, and their whole family are basically victims caught in the web of prejudice and hatred from *both* the white settlers and the Native-Americans who are protecting their land.

Despite the standard day-for-night shooting, there are some wonderful images in the film, such as the sequence where Pacer's wounded mother struggles across the windy and bare fields near their house. It seems almost allegorical the way the wind and dirt swirl and impede her progress, and she stumbles and struggles to push her way forward, across land that in previous scenes seemed friendly and bucolic. When her husband rushes out to look for her, I felt actual physical pain in my chest from his terror that she would be lost and dying in the bare soil of this land that he had tended for 20 years, and that now seemed like an enemy to him for it hid from him what he loved. Truly an amazing sequence from an excellent director.

5 out of 5 stars Only film that they let him 'act' instead of alot of singing.......2006-10-08

This film showed Elvis's ability as an actor, the only one that ever did. Most of his films were chasing women, and singing. This and Blue Hawaii, to me, are the best. The theme 'Flaming Star', I really felt applied to him at his death...think of his life, and listen to the words....

5 out of 5 stars Flaming Star is not just a great Elvis movie.......2006-08-13

It's a great movie, period! I just saw it in Cinemascope at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood last night and I was stunned by its excellence. I've often heard that this movie proved that Elvis could "act" but I've always been skeptical. I assumed the movie would be full of histrionic treacle and have studiously avoided it.

Big mistake. This movie is first rate, of the highest order. Elvis has gotten knocked over the years for not making more movies like "Flaming Star". But, when you really think about it, NO ONE made movies like "Flaming Star", in any era!

The movie starts tragically and continues it's ever-widening downward spiral until the very end! There's not a light moment in the picture (excluding the very first scene) and it's to be commended for not pulling any punches. Shakespeare didn't write tragedy any better than this.

That is why "Flaming Star" is so satisfying. It stands apart from just about any film you can think of. I LIKE tragedy and would like to see more of it. But, evidently, tragedy doesn't sell and that's why Hollywood stays away from it.

Not only does Elvis play the role of the half-breed Pacer perfectly but he is well-suited to the part. Marlon Brando would not have been a good choice. Elvis looks the part of a half-breed and resembles his Indian "brothers" as much or more than his "real" white brother.

Not enough has been said here at Amazon about the superb perfomances by John McIntire and Steve Forrest in this film. I've seen both of them a million times in films and it's hard to get excited about either one of them. But, in "Flaming Star", their performances are dead-on. They are well-cast and letter perfect in their roles.

Barabara Eden and Delores Del Rio are also superb. Don Siegal knew what he wanted out of all of the actors in this picture and he got what he wanted, in spades.

GREAT film! You don't have to be an Elvis fan to admire it.

Gene Wilder takes his most unusual role, a naive 19th-century rabbi sent from his native Poland to the fledgling Jewish community in San Francisco, in this warm-hearted comic adventure. The trusting soul is easy prey for the con men and criminals who prey on the immigrants arriving in the Philadelphia port and the rabbi, beaten but unbowed, continues his trek West solo: broke, underequipped, and hopelessly lost. Harrison Ford, fresh from Star Wars, is the roguish outlaw who adopts the determined traveler and the two become unlikely friends as they make their way through one scrape after another. Wilder makes a sincere and sympathetic hero, his faith and courage seeing him through one crisis after another, and fresh-faced Ford makes an endearing scamp of a bank robber. The meandering adventure, overlong at two hours, takes its time as the duo traverses the gorgeous American countryside and end up in the bustling Barbary Coast San Francisco of the Gold Rush era. Legendary hard-edged action director Robert Aldrich (Kiss Me Deadly, The Dirty Dozen) brings a gentle touch and easygoing humor to this family-oriented adventure, but old habits die hard. While staying within PG parameters, Aldrich adds a little grit to the Old West fistfights and gunfights. --Sean Axmaker

Description

It's 1850 and new rabbi Avram Belinski sets out from Philadelphia toward San Francisco. Cowpoke bandit Tom Lillard hasn't seen a rabbi before. But he knows when one needs a heap of help. And getting this tenderfoot to Frisco in one piece will cause a heap of trouble - with the law, Native Americans and a bunch of killers. Gene Wilder and Harrison Ford are one feisty team as rabbi and rescuer in this rough-'n'-ready romp that rivals Wilder's earlier Blazing Saddles in Wild West hilarity. Director Robert Aldrich is a seasoned hand at blending roughhouse and laughter, as fans of his earlier The Dirty Dozen and The Longest Yard will attest. With a full posse of screen talents, The Frisco Kid rides tall in the comedy saddle. Director: Robert Aldrich Starring: Gene Wilder, Harrison Ford, Ramon Bieri

5 out of 5 stars A Classic!.......2007-08-23

One of my favorites, glad it's finally out on DVD.

Not for everyone, but I think Gene Wilder's performance is great and Harrison Ford also does a fantastic job.

5 out of 5 stars Great Comedy Film.......2007-07-12

One of Gene Wilder's best roles and a fabulous perfomance by Harrison Ford before all the serious stuff. One of my all-time favorite films, not on DVD until recently.

Great Comedy at a great price!

5 out of 5 stars This is a classic movie.......2007-05-30

This is one of those movies that is a wonderful story and presents some great insight into jewish history and customs. I have waited years for this to come out on DVD.

4 out of 5 stars The Critics Didn't Get It. So Who Listens to Critics?.......2007-03-29

The Frisco Kid, directed by Robert Aldrich, is the quirky inventive saga of a young Polish rabbi who is sent to America in 1850 to take over a congregation in San Francisco. Getting there proves to be quite a test of his stamina, his adaptability, and his religious faith. Gene Wilder's performance as Avram is a jaunty, sweet, and convincing triumph of comic bravado.

After docking in Philadelphia, the rabbi plays Good Samaritan to three nare-do-wells who later rob him and strand him in a strange land. Fortunately he comes upon some Amish farmers who give him shelter and money to resume his trek. After a brief stint working on the railroad, Avram meets Tommy Lillard (Harrison Ford), a bank robber with a heart of gold and a quick temper. The two team up and go ricocheting from one adventure to another -- an escape from a posse, a trial by fire at the hands of some Native American Indians, a visit to the brotherhood of silent monks, and two violent encounters with the bad boys who robbed Avram in Philadelphia.

Movie critics of the era panned the movie saying: "The pairing of Gene Wilder and a young Harrison Ford may sound intriguing, but this film is not. It's a startlingly unfunny comedy in which most of the jokes misfire and the evolution of the characters is forced and unbelievable. Wilder is a great comedic talent, but salvaging this material is beyond him."

Evidently they weren't looking for a good time. Talk of plot character 'evolution' should be worried about in film making classrooms. I think they should have actaully sat back and just enjoyed the romp.

The Frisco Kid is an offbeat comedy that manages to convey the sturdy faith of a believer. Avram will not travel on the Sabbath for any reason; he returns his share of the money from Lillard's bank robbery; he transmits the joy of Judaism to the Indians; and he agonizes over murdering a man in self-defense. Whereas this movie will probably not become a smash with the public, it is highly regarded for the religiously sensitive.

4 out of 5 stars Corny movie but a classic of sorts.......2007-01-22

Jewish boy rabbi (Gene Wilder) who can't make it in Poland (home) gets sent to San Francisco where the new Jewish congregation needs a rabbi. Of course he has to get from the East Coast to California - not an easy task in those days.

Enter Harrison Ford - bank robber and fast gunslinger. An unlikely duo make it across the continent to see Wilder married to his bethrothed and Ford as his best man.

A winner if you don't mind some schmaltz here and there. Quite entertaining especially (and probably mostly) if you are also Jewish.

Nineteen thirty-nine is often proposed as the movies' halcyon year, and three reasons why were directed by John Ford: Stagecoach, Young Mr. Lincoln, and Drums Along the Mohawk. In that exalted company Drums... would have to be accounted "merely superb"--even if it's the best film ever made about the American Revolution and, oh, only about eighth-best picture of its year.

Henry Fonda and Claudette Colbert play newlyweds in New York's Mohawk Valley at the time of the Revolutionary War. That war is more a distant rumor than a direct concern of people with cabins to raise, crops to harvest, and firstborn on the way. When it comes to their valley, in the form of hitherto-peaceable Indians whipped up by a gaunt Tory with an eyepatch (John Carradine), life changes as though with the passing of a cloud shadow.

In this, his first color film, Ford created indelible images of the dawning of America: a lone wagon making its way through acres of long grass rippling in the wind; the Indians, at the onset of their first raid, seeming to materialize out of the mist, out of the very trunks of trees; a ragged line of farmers with flintlocks passing along a split-rail fence, then resolving into a column, an army, marching toward a distant horizon. (Utah's Wasatch mountain country stands in persuasively for upstate New York in pioneer days.) Edna May Oliver scored a best-supporting-actress Oscar nomination as a memorably crusty frontier widow, while Ward Bond--oddly omitted from the opening credits--claimed a place of honor in the John Ford Stock Company playing Fonda's best friend. --Richard T. Jameson

Description

Lawless frontier. Indian attacks. Settlers protecting themselves the only way they know how-with guns and courage. In the years before the Revolutionary War, the East was as wild as the West would be one hundred years later. Henry Fonda delivers one of his most memorable performances ever as a young frontier leader protecting his family in the backwoods of New York state. Claudette Colbert so-stars as his spirited wife. With a fine supporting cast that also includes Edna May Oliver and John Carradine, this is one of John Ford's most exciting historical dramas.

4 out of 5 stars Pioneering Eastern USA.......2007-09-11

This movie endures well, partly because it is historical, and therefore not subject to obsolescence, other than technical obsolescence - due to changes in filming techniques. These are not significant.

In its day, "Drums Along the Mohawk" was Academy Award material. Perhaps it would still be so.

I get caught in the drama, the danger, the excitement and the unbelievable hardships of the pioneers, especially the women. This movie tends to bring out all of those aspects of pioneer life, and because I am drawn in, I get a strong feeling of participation, even though I am sure I don't have the heart to be a true pioneer.

5 out of 5 stars Good Movie This!!!.......2007-09-07

Educational, exciting, this one has it all!! Classic Henry Fonda, good supporting actors, lots of action...there was no FEMA to pull your fat out of the fire, this is a movie about self-reliance, hard work, and the will to live in the New World. Well done!

5 out of 5 stars Lovin Henry Fonda.......2007-08-23

Well, being a great fan of Mr.Fonda since I was very young, it was great to get one of his older movies to watch on DVD.
Drums is a typically well done John Ford story with all the story sidebars and characters you can later regognize as the Ford "people", even a rather young Ward Bond.
This movie was based on a book of the same title, and is good enough to make you want to read the book, just like the movie versoin of "The Grapes of Wrath" does.

4 out of 5 stars Neglected gem!...one of John Ford's finest films..........2007-08-05

1939 was a banner year for great films--and certainly one of them was "Drums Along the Mohawk" in gorgeous early technicolor about a period in history not often used as the subject of a major film. Henry Fonda and Claudette Colbert are fine as a young couple in the years before the Revolutionary War settling in the backwoods of New York state. The hardships of pioneer life are made even tougher by the presence of Indians on the warpath, the only refuge being a nearby fort where men, women and children find some protection.

Brilliantly photographed with lots of action scenes that bring the film vividly to life under John Ford's direction. John Carradine makes an excellent villain and Edna May Oliver gives another one of her priceless performances as an elderly widow who forms a strong attachment to the young couple. An unforgettable scene has Indians raiding her home while she refuses to budge from her bed even though they set fire to it. Scenes of Indian cruelty and torture are also present--but altogether a moving film well worth viewing to see what frontier life must have been like way back then.

Sentimental at times--but also harsh and realistic. Most memorable scene: Fonda pursued by Indians for a long chase over woodlands, finally wearing out his pursuers who collapse from sheer exhaustion. Thrilling chase!

5 out of 5 stars A Rare Revolutionary War Classic.......2007-06-09

There are relatively few really good films pertaining to the Revolutionary War era, and this is one of the very best. It is a very fast-moving story of a young newlywed couple (Henry Fonda and Claudette Colbert) who move from the comfort of the city to the rustic and eminently dangerous 1770s upstate New York, in the Mohawk Valley, where the settlers continually battle the elements and the Indians, who fight the colonists as the proxies of the British. The film will definitely hold the viewer's interest as the couple, their community, and the young nation battle to survive. An outstanding film, on the same level as "Sergeant York!"
