"The best of the best is back and better than ever" (WNYW-TV) in the latest installment of the pulse-pounding, thrill-a-minute Die Hard action films. New York City detective John McClane (Bruce Willis) delivers old-school justice to a new breed of terrorists when a massive computer attack on the U.S. infrastructure threatens to shut down the entire country over Independence Day weekend.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Bruce shows us how it's done!.......2007-09-17

I read an article in a British film magazine this weekend that says Bruce shows today's action film pansies (their word, not mine!) how to deliver an action film.
I have to agree. This was by far the best film I saw all summer (Yes, even better than the third Pirates movie!).
I can't wait to buy the DVD.
When Bruce takes on a fighter jet, you know who my money's on!

2 out of 5 stars DIE HARD TO BELIEVE.......2007-09-17

Maybe Iam too picky, but should not a movie contain a resonable piece of pluasablity. Well Die Hard 4 contains none. It could be more believable if John McClane was depicted as a super hero from another planet,With indistructable super powers. It could be movies like this that encourage young people to fight each thinking no one will get seriously hurt, when in reality one punch could cause the death of another person as has happened many times here in Australia as iam sure it has in other parts of the world

4 out of 5 stars Live hard or die for free.......2007-09-16

At first glance, the pieces don't look like much. We've see John McClane (Willis) before, so we know we can count on him for a testosterone-fueled rampage against the master terrorist. Then there's the master terrorist, with the requisite delusions of grandeur, threating all of Americas and John's personal life, as usual. There's a daughter to save, a nerd to protect, and - well, nothing really new here.

So let's just get to the good stuff. The chases are great, which helps because most of the movie seems to be chases. Lots of stuff blows up and burns. Lots of cars go flying through the air, landing in ways sure to void the warrantee. There are lots of great fights, and some pretty spectacular set-pieces - that car in the elevator shaft comes to mind. And, when you want a really manly way to shoot the bad guy, wait for the end and see how McClane does it.

It's a guy flick, with all the macho, witty quips, and damage to persons and property you could hope for. No grand themes or sensitive moments, but why would a real man want that kind of stuff anyway?

4 out of 5 stars "Is the circus in town?" .......2007-09-10

After having a vicious assault be temporarily staved off , Justin Long's character shakily asks his savior if he's done stuff like that before - and if he's killed someone before - to which John McClane's laconic response is "Not for a long time." And, indeed, it's been 12 long years since Die Hard with a Vengeance (Widescreen Edition). John McClane is now older, balder, grumpier, and, being saddled with a PG-13 rating, not as profane, but he still cannot stay out of trouble. This time he's assigned the seemingly mundane task of escorting in young hacker Matt Farrell (Justin Long), who's wanted for questioning. But the situation quickly sours as, within moments of meeting Farrell, McClane begins to hear that oh-so-familiar melody of automatic gunfire directed at their noggins.

Both McClane and the frail but side-of-the-mouth funny computer geek speedily realize that Farrell's fringe involvement is merely the very tip of the iceberg, and that the stakes are much, much higher. Turns out that the contractor who'd hired Farrell to do a simple, innocuous code work is scheming to hold the entire nation hostage with his own paralyzing brand of cyber terrorism. Soon, the systematical shutdown of the American infrastructure is underway as, basically, all things computerized become compromised. This includes the targeting and usurping of key establishments such as the FAA, Amtrak, the stock market, and our satellite communications system. But, for Los Angelinos like myself, the most insidious act committed may have been the subversing of *gasp* the street traffic lights.

For the now grizzled John McClane, nothing much has changed. He's a Lieutenant Detective now, so he's kind of moved up in the world. And he still has those perpetually pursed lips. But his personal life is predictably very much in shambles. He's alone again, divorced (with his ex-wife Holly gone back to using her Gennero surname) and estranged from his children. The start of the film has McClane pathetically attempting to keep tabs on his sullen and willful daughter, Lucy Gennero (Mary Elizabeth Winstead). But she wants none of his reconciliatory gestures. Not to mention, McClane's an anachronistic type who clings to classic rock music and who is computer unsavvy. Good thing he's got a hacker in his custody.

It's such a treat to watch Bruce Willis again be in his element and playing this iconic role. Not that Entertainment Weekly has the final say, but I do agree with the magazine's listed assessment of Die Hard (Widescreen Edition) as being the top action film ever (Aliens (Two-Disc Collector's Edition) was number 2, RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK was number 3). Nowadays, Willis, at 52 years old, is not as spry or free with the smirks. But his physicality, even at this stage, can't be questioned as he suffered bruises and scars in the making of this film. As McClane, he still trounces bad guys with the best of 'em. But, more so than McClane's penchant for arse whoopin', what draws the audience to him is that aura of reluctance, world weariness, and doggedness which he exudes so naturally. We relate to this ordinary, blue collar cat who, time and again, becomes stuck in the wrong place at the wrong time and is forced to angrily muddle thru because there's no one else to do the job. Although LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD portrays McClane as more of a supercop this time, who can go one on one with an F-35 fighter jet and murder an assault chopper with a car, I still fondly remember the first film, in which McClane passed muster as a very likable everyday guy barely keeping it together in Nakatomi Plaza. John McClane has built up so much good will that I'm able to easily forgive - and even celebrate - the high octane and wildly improbable excesses here.

Justin Long, dubiously best known as the Mac guy in the Apple computer ad campaigns, gets his number called for sidekick duties, and he does a good job, although there were times where his trembly act got to be too much. His Matt Farrell may be a borderline computer felon but his heart's in the right place. Long gets to make the brunt of the wisecracks while McClane tersely motors along (he says to some fellow geeks who'd just blown his cover, "Good luck at the Bad Timing Awards."). One failing of the film is the lack of a charismatic villain. Timothy Olyphant is unmemorable as former Homeland Security computer whiz Thomas Gabriel, whose mission is to digitally teach the nation and his ex-bosses a lesson while garnering sinful financial amounts. There's nothing fresh or arresting about Olyphant's acting performance, which basically consists of a whole lot of staring really hard. But, admittedly, it's fun to witness Gabriel's ever growing exasperation as McClane persists in surviving. Maggie Q does better as the evil hot Asian babe who's also a formidable martial artist. Her character Mai proves to be pretty resilient (but, ultimately, not resilient enough). Writer and maverick director Kevin Smith gets a chance to mug for the camera as the Warlock (or Freddy, to his mom), a jedi hacker whose base of operations is in his mother's basement. Bonnie Bedelia, by the way, is sorely missed, and the film would've benefited with more scenes between McClain and his surly daughter.

LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD was primed to be a colossal summer blockbuster, and, as such, it had certain criteria it had to meet. Director Len Wiseman (the UNDERWORLD films) comes strong and full bore with great visuals, a relentless pace, implausible action sequences, and crazy pyrotechnics. And all this performed at raucous, senses shattering decibels. The stunts are mindblowing, keeping in mind that CG effects were kept to a minimum. These are flesh and bone stunts being done here. But, still, at the heart of the loud thrill-a-minutes, there is Bruce Willis keeping it all together with his signature McClane-isms. I still get a vast kick out of his un-PC chortling whenever he causes yet another bad guy's demise (oh, that poor, agile-as-a-monkey French dude). As always, to me, his mockery of death, in a way, adds a layer of realism as this has become McClane's way of ackowledging his vulnerability and celebrating his surviving yet another harrowing scrape. LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD is PG-13, but the film finds ways to circumvent the rating as the ever resourceful McClane continues to cuss (but minus the "F" word) and ad-lib his way to amassing an impressive body count. Yippee-ki-yay, emmer-effer.

4 out of 5 stars Whoah! Badazz Action Movie!!!.......2007-09-08

Techies prove a point in this national security nightmare action drama, when a home grown terrorist masterminds a plan to shut down the entire country, one network at a time.

Of course you can figure out that the one thing he forgot to factor into his programme was Detective John McClane, who is still around, albeit a little older, but still an ornery, stubborn, annoying pain in the rear, and as it turns out, still a force to be reckoned with.

An analog guy in a high tech world, McClane is sent to pick up and deliver a computer hacker named Matt Farrell to the FBI, but as was the case in 16 Blocks, the delivery isn't as simple as it sounds. Unknown at the time to McClane and Farrell, somebody's been deleting the great hackers of America, and there are no prizes for guessing who's up next.

To quote lyrics from Cypress Hill:

"Boom biddy bye bye
Boom biddy bye bye

Step back as I'm kicking up dust
For a while
As I put mothaf***as to rest
And pull their files"

Predictably, McClane sets off to get the bad guys, and although a whole lot of the movie is mind-numbing techie stuff, with people accessing protected systems with consummate ease, the rest of it is action, action, action, with eye popping CGI, and mega-destruction.

Even if you're digitally challenged like myself and get lost in the cyber-warfare, the explosions and high octane scenes are more than enough to make you go "WHOAH!"

"Boom biddy bye bye
It's time to die
Boom biddy bye bye
Time to say good-bye"

The next best thing to Die Hard, and a must-see for action buffs.

5 out of 5 stars A real sleeper.......2007-09-07

This film is really under-rated and overlooked. I rented it first on a friend's recommendation and promply went to Amazon and bought it. I've watched it 4 times already and lent it out to several friends who also bought it. I understand that this has become a cult favorite especially in England and am not surprised. It's an interestingly presented story that appears to be just another teenage angst piece at first glance but the further you get into the movie, the more you realize that there is a whole lot more going on. I strongly recommend this for anyone who enjoys movies that are not only out of the mainstream but cut a whole new river of their own.

The music is great and the songs are amazing. I haven't viewed any special featuers yet, but I'm going to soon!

3 out of 5 stars Original Cut Superior to the "Director's Cut".......2007-07-17

The original theatrical release is a modern masterpiece. This is the movie that introduced Jake Gyllenhaal and his sister to the world (playing a brother and sister onscreen), as well as revived the career of Patrick Swayze (or it should have, in my opinion). Swayze may not have gotten any work from this movie but the Gyllenhaals sure did!

It's not possible to really describe this movie, except to say that it is a bizarre teen movie that involves a time-traveling man in a bunny suit. It's like John Hughes on PCP. If that sounds at all intriguing, you will certainly be pleasantly surprised at how it plays out on the screen.

The original theatrical release (available on DVD as the Donnie Darko (Widescreen Edition)) was a masterpiece. The "director's cut" may be the director's vision, but the added effects, INXS soundtrack, and "book excerpts" do not add anything to the film except for running time. The director wanted to clarify some of the points in the film to strengthen its sci-fi aspects--and, in doing so, ruined many viewers' interpretations of the original film. One case in point is the anti-psychotic pills that Donnie is on: In the original film, it's up to the viewer to decide if everything is part of a drug reaction (just one explanation that fans offered), but in the "director's cut" the director adds a line from the psychiatrist saying that the pills are "placebo" pills. Also, the sci-fi time travel theories are given additional room to breathe, and come off as hokey rather than mysterious. Some things are best left unsaid.

Original Release: ***** (five stars)

3 out of 5 stars dvd.......2007-07-04

i rated this a 3 because the quality and packaging was good but the movie was lame, very boring.

4 out of 5 stars 'Through a Glass Darkly'.......2007-06-22

It is hard to describe the plot of 'Donnie Darko' without making the movie seem repellant. 'Donnie Darko' is purposely ambivalent, and the causality of bizarre events is intriguing from the very start. The journal development is a retro trip in itself. Using footage of the Dukakis and Bush (I) debates before the 1988 election, the movie authenticates its setting of a high school near the end of the eighties. How they manage to mix nostalgia with an eerie tale with dark manifestations is a mystery, but they pull it off. Uniquely enigmatic with the memories they elicit, the movie has the effect of being a 'Twilight Zone' manifestation of 'Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion.' (Aptly, the soundtrack draws from "Tears for Fears" instead of "Bow Wow Wow".)

Now about the story. Our titled tortured protagonist (Jake Gyllenhaal in another talented role) is undergoing psychiatric care complete with medication. The first hint we have that things aren't going well is when an ominous voice summons Donnie out of bed to meet him somewhere in the dark. What we discover there on a golf green is a six-foot rabbit, who, if his processed voice weren't so menacing, could only be dismissed with chuckles. (One can only describe the creature as a rabid or demonic 'Harvey'.) And, indeed, our best evidence of a demonic presence is when Donnie asks him later, "Why do you wear that stupid bunny suit?" To which the voice quickly replies, "Why are you wearing that stupid human suit?") Here he announces to the disturbed adolescent that the world is going to end in approximately a month--Halloween 1988--to be exact. After that we get varying degrees of maladjustment with some foreboding events. Upon his return home he discovers he narrowly escaped death when an airplane part fell through his bedroom, leveling much of the house. A grateful Donnie will do anything for "Frank," who saved him from the debacle. From there a series of inexplicable events take place that leave one glued to the screen with magnetic interest.

'Donnie Darko' is a mysterious and disturbing alternative movie. Some of the draw comes with the acting. Keeping it real is no short order. The scenes of hypnosis are mesmerizing with Dr. Therman (played with expert delicacy by Katherine Ross) who tries to uncover Donnie's pathology. But it isn't that easy. In the meanwhile, Donnie, himself, seeks a teacher at his private school and an elderly woman down the road who has written a book about time travel. Dabbling with penetrating thoughts about predestination and the occult, Donnie's predicament is fascinating. Drew Barrymore, whose mere presence could singularly bring flashbacks of the eighties, is the producer and plays lively English teacher, Karen Pomeroy, a character who provides a pivotal place for social commentary. (Besides a mysterious mood piece, some satire is accessible.) On the staff is stalwart moral zealot, Mrs. Farmer, who is almost painted in clown white during her ignorant tirades. There's also preacher-like motivational speaker, Jim Cunningham (Patrick Swayze who makes his character creepy enough) who has a few skeletons in his own closet.

'Donnie Darko' deserves accolades for being so original. With effective performances that include the delicious novelty of having Donnie's sister played by real-life sister Maggie Gyllenhaal, the elements speak for themselves. Nevertheless, the overall effect is not as satisying as the creativity, and the story leaves some gaping holes that, while like real life, are unsettling nonetheless. 'Donnie Darko' will fill a black hole for teenagers who will relate to some of Donnie's difficulties that beg for meaning. (Recommended for a different sort of movie adventure.)

Cockney boys Tom, Soap, Eddie, and Bacon are in a bind; they owe seedy criminal and porn king "Hatchet" Harry a sizable amount of cash after Eddie loses half a million in a rigged game of poker. Hot on their tails is a thug named Big Chris who intends to send them all to the hospital if they don't come up with the cash in the allotted time. Add into the mix an incompetent set of ganja cultivators, two dimwitted robbers, a "madman" with an afro, and a ruthless band of drug dealers and you have an astonishing movie called Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. Before the boys can blink, they are caught up in a labyrinth of double-crosses that lead to a multitude of dead bodies, copious amounts of drugs, and two antique rifles.

Written and directed by talented newcomer Guy Ritchie, this is one of those movies that was destined to become an instant cult classic à la Reservoir Dogs. Although some comparisons were drawn between Ritchie and Quentin Tarantino, it would be unfair to discount the brilliant wit of the story and the innovative camerawork that the director brings to his debut feature. Not since The Krays has there been such an accurate depiction of the East End and its more colorful characters. Indicative of the social stratosphere in London, Ritchie's movie is a hilarious and at times touching account of friendships and loyalty. The director and his mates (who make up most of the cast) clearly are enjoying themselves here. This comes across in some shining performances, in particular from ex-footballer Vinnie Jones (Big Chris) and an over-the-top Vas Blackwood (as Rory Breaker), who very nearly steals the show. Full of quirky vernacular and clever tension-packed action sequences, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels is a triumph--a perfect blend of intelligence, humor, and suspense. --Jeremy Storey

2 out of 5 stars An OK film, nothing more...........2007-09-06

The first time I saw this, I liked it a bit, but I wasn't overly impressed. It was British, slick, but I never felt like I had seen a masterpiece of the British gangster genre (The Long Good Friday is light years better than this. Even lighter films like The League of Gentlemen and The Lavender Hill Mob are much better than this one. So is Donald Cammell's Performance.). Watching it again recently on The Sundance Channel, it's really a vain, shallow film, with very predictable dialogue that sounds Tarantinoesque, except with Cockney accents. It's really trying to be hip, edgy, and clever, but it's really rather tiresome and ultimately boring. Most people have said it's a U.K. ripoff of Quentin, and there's some truth to that. The film has a cute title, and it's nice to see London, but aside from that, I can't really think of anything this film can offer you. If you've seen it once, that's all you need.

4 out of 5 stars No Honor Among Thieves.......2007-07-24

I enjoy Guy Ritchie movies. "Snatch" is probably my favorite, but "Lock, Stock, & Two Smoking Barrels" is a blast to watch too. These dark British comedies are some of the best you will see. However, you will need a tolerance for violence. If you enjoy the "Kill Bill" movies and/or "Formula 51", you will probably enjoy this movie.

A member of a gang loses all his money and goes into debt to a crooked loan shark. His own gang is held responsible for the debt. They rob a group that robbed some pot dealers. Throw in some double barrel shotguns that get stolen that the loan shark wants and him hiring to many thugs to get him want he wants and you have lots of people dying. Great story and action. I recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best British Comedies Ever.......2007-06-25

If you've seen "Snatch" you have to watch this film (since it is the pre-sequel to "Snatch".) It is a very funny and yet full of action that you won't get bored. I am a big fan of Jason Statham so I purchased this film and I am hooked. Everyone who I recommended this film to has purchased it to add on to his/her collections. This film is idea at get-togethers.

5 out of 5 stars Madcap British crime caper.......2007-04-16

Director Guy Ritchie expertly concocted an amusing crime thriller replete with crosses and double crosses among various criminal groups in London's underworld. The plot surrounds a group of 4 low level criminals played by Jason Statham, Nick Moran, Jason Flemyng and Dexter Fletcher who pool their resources to sit in at a high stakes card game with a 100,000 pound admission. Nick Moran playing Eddie is a card shark but the game run by porn king Harry "Hatchet" Lonsdale played by P.J. Moriarty is fixed. He loses the 100,000 and an aditional 500,000 which must be paid within a week or else.

The band of 4 friends contrive to recoup the stolen funds by ripping off a marijuana growing cartel that conveniently live next door. That group had already been targeted by other group of robbers and things as a result get predictably muddled.

Meanwhile The "Hatchet" has commissioned the theft of a pair of antique shotguns worth a small fortune that bizarrely wind up in the hands of Moran and his friends. The various groups begin exchanging both the money and the shotguns among them leaving behind a trail of bloodied corpses in this farcical romp.

Ritchie concludes this well contrived comedic thriller, which includes a plethora of tough looking British thugs, with a touch of irony that effectively caps this winning film.

4 out of 5 stars The only film that makes me proud to say I'm British.......2007-04-01

This is the best british comedy EVER....well in my opinion ;-)

It has a pulp fiction vibe, following a group of wheelers and dealers (hustlers) who get into a sticky situation with an East End gangster.

Original plot, clever dialogue and great cinematography. I'm sure Americans will struggle with the dialogue but give it a try!

Lo and behold, Clerks II defies the odds as a sequel that even the most ardent Clerks fans can be happy about. Twelve years after Kevin Smith turned the independent film world upside-down with his $27,000 black-and-white comedy, perpetual slackers Dante (Brian O'Halloran) and Randal (Jeff Anderson) return for another raucous romp in suburbia, but this time there's no beloved Quick Stop mini-mart to ensure their low-level employment. Now they're aimless 33-year-olds flippin' burgers at Mooby's, a fast-food joint with a cow theme that's "udderly delicious." Dante's engaged to his long-time girlfriend but has unexpectedly fallen in love with Mooby's manager Becky (and since she's played by Rosario Dawson, can you blame him?), and Randal's still holding out for life, liberty, and the pursuit of low ambition. The responsibilities of adulthood are rearing their ugly head, and with Jay and Silent Bob (Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith) still dealing weed and generally being obnoxious, well... something's gotta give, right? The way Smith has written this long-awaited follow-up, the dilemmas of Dante, Randal, and their ongoing friendship are something that anyone can relate to, and with Dawson lighting up the screen (in a role demanded by producer Harvey Weinstein to boost box-office appeal), the movie's romantic chemistry is surprisingly delightful. Rest assured, also, that Smith (shooting mostly in color this time, on a $5 million budget) hasn't forgotten where he came from: Clerks II is jam-packed with the same lewd, crude humor that made Clerks an indie-film phenomenon, and Smith's good-natured sincerity is still on full display, ensuring that only the most prudish viewers could possibly be offended. For everyone else, this is as enjoyable as any sequel could ever hope to be, with amusing cameos by Smith-movie veterans Ben Affleck and Jason Lee, among others. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars the journey comes to an end........2007-09-13

The final chapter of the "New Jersey Chronicles" is am almost satisfying ending to a series of films extending about 15 years.

its more than 10 years after the events of clerks. Dante and Randall's situation hasnt improved much. they're still working basically the same jobs. in the opening scene the quick stop pretty much burns down. the rest of the movie after that takes place at Mooby's fast food place, Dante and Randall's other job.

ive always found Dante to be a kind of bland character, just like TC in Mallrats, but they both have that outrageous sidekick (randall) so it balances out well.

Clerks 2 carries the torch of the original perfectly, with classic characters and always entertaining strings of dialogue. the movie has a satisfying ending which properly brings closure to the chronicles. i wish Kevin would keep it up though. even after all these years, these characters havent played themselves out at all, even if their own creator thinks thats the case. Kevin Smith is arguably my favorite writer/director, so im kind of biased, but all of his work that ive seen couldnt be any better in my opinion.

like most DVD's Kevin Smith puts out, this has the special features to keep anybody busy for a while, including an hour and a half long documentary on the making of Clerks 2.

3 out of 5 stars Not As Good As The First - Duh!.......2007-09-11

Kevin Smith hit paydirt with his ultra-low-budget Clerks back in the day and has been trying to catch up ever since. Clerks, the ultimate satirical look at slackers working in a conveinence store (Dante) and a video shop (Randal)was so fresh and alive back in the day, that anything new would obviously suffer. Years later the slackers no longer have a cush job at the Quickstop when it burns down. They move on to Moobys burger shack to continue their menial existence. Of course, Jay & Silent Bob follow, hanging out in front of Moobys, selling dope and putting on a pretty entertaining show. Nostalgia makes this movie watchable. If I was a person that had never seen the first Clerks, or appreciated its twisted humor, then I would have hated this movie entirely, without question. Where Randal and Dante were funny and kinda sad in the first movie, now they are just plain losers and you want to smash their skulls in with a hammer. Dante is engaged and getting ready to move away to Florida to begin a legitimate life working for his soon-to-be-inlaws. The only flaw to that logic is that Dante is secretly in love with Becky (Rosario Dawson), his boss at Moobys. Where his current girlfriend is a manipulating, clingy, over-zealous make-out queen, Becky is cool and fun and beautiful and she really cares about Dante, God knows why. Overall, the jokes are okay. Jay and Silent Bob are pretty funny. The whole Star Wars vs. Lord Of The Rings is middle of the road. In reality, it's extremely hard to go and make a sequel to a classic that is going to be anywhere near the quality and freshness of the first movie. Escpecially 10 years later. Clerks was excellent film-making by a then starving director. It was fresh and dirty and completely hilarious. Kevin Smith is a talented writer and director, but moving back is not helping. In the original ending to Clerks, Dante gets shot and killed by a robber at the Quickstop. Maybe Smith should have left it that way.

Deal with it!

5 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS.......2007-09-05

This movie was great and was insanely funny. I wouldn't watch this with my parents though.

5 out of 5 stars Outrageously funny!.......2007-08-30

This was one movie I found myself laughing at so hard. Dante (Brian O'Halleran) might be the main character of the movie but Randal (Jeff Anderson) carried the movie with his jokes about geek boy Elias, Lord Of The Rings, and Dante's fiancee Emma. It was also funny when Jay (Jason Mewes) gets hit by The Mooby's door while he's about to urinate outside the building. And the part when Randal accidentally flings his playing cards at a Mooby's customer was so funny I had to back it up to see it again. The most bizarre part is the guy and the donkey. You'd never think a big tough guy like that would be into that kind of thing. And Emma annoyed me big time. The Mrs. Hicks shirt was a bit much and she seemed too controlling with Dante. I know you get that in certain movies but I just couldn't tolerate Emma. Rosario Dawson though is a joy to watch in this as Becky, Dante and Randal's boss at Mooby's. She's way more down to Earth and way more nicer than Emma is. And she was hot during the dance scene on the roof. This is a good movie of over the top crude humor mixed with a compelling dramatic moment. Clerks II is worth the buy!

1 out of 5 stars yet another tooth extraction.......2007-08-29

It isn't funny. It isn't well directed. Its edited horribly. The 'actors' mug at the camera, trying to pass for cool.
This qualifies it though as a indy hit.
Kevin Smith has never been more than what hollywood thinks a young turk outsider director should be.
Now with his career in the toilet(die hard cameos and clerks 2 are him sliding under the waves)I find myself looking with anticipation for his next abortion as his movies are bordering on so bad its good territory.

Paul Newman shines as cocky poolroom hustler "Fast" Eddie Felson in Robert Rossen's atmospheric adaptation of the Walter Tevis novel. Newman's Felson is a swaggering pool shark punk who takes on the king of the poolroom, Minnesota Fats (a cool, assured Jackie Gleason in his most understated performance). After losing big and crashing into a void of self-pity, Eddie meets down-and-out Sarah (Piper Laurie in a delicate performance), an alcoholic blue blood who's dropped into Eddie's world of dingy bars and seedy poolrooms. Eddie regains his confidence and attracts the attention of a shifty, calculating promoter, Bert Gordon (George C. Scott at his most heartless), who offers to bring Eddie into the big money--but at what cost? Rossen brings his film to life with the easy pace of a pool game, giving his actors room to explore their characters and develop into a razor-sharp ensemble. Eugen Schüfftan earned an Academy Award for his shadowing black-and-white cinematography, as did art directors Harry Horner and Gene Callahan for their deceivingly simple set designs. Even in the daylight this film seems to be smothered by night, lit by the dim glow of a bar lamp or the overhead glare of a pool-table light, an appropriate environment for this tale of one man's struggle with his soul and his self-esteem. Newman returned as an older, wiser, cagier Felson 25 years later in Martin Scorsese's Color of Money. --Sean Axmaker

Description

Paul Newman heads a superb cast featuring Jackie Gleason, George C. Scott and Piper Laurie in the riveting film that received an Academy Award(r) nomination as Best Picture of 1961 and brought all four of its Oscar(r) nomination. Newman (Best Actor nominee) is electrifying as Fast Eddie Felson, an arrogant, amoral hustler who haunts backstreet pool rooms fleecing anyone who'll pick up a cue. Determined to be acclaimed as the best, Eddie seeks out the legendary Minnesota Fats (Gleason, Supporting Actor nominee), who's backed by Bert Gordon (Scott, Supporting Actor nominee), a predatory gambler. Eddie can beat the champ, but virtually defeats himself with his low self-image. The love of a lonely woman (Laurie, Best Actress nominee) could turn Eddie's life around, but he won't rest until he beats Minnesota Fats, no matter what price he must pay. Voted one of the year's ten best by "The New York Times" and "Time," and distinguished by 2 Academy Awards- Cinematography, Art Direction-Set Decoration (B&W), The Hustler is a dazzling cinematic triumph.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Hustler-Great Movie........2007-08-28

The movie is a timeless classic. It was Paul Newman's breakout role and Jackie Gleason's performance as Minisota Fats is flawless. Other standout performances are Piper Laurie as Newman's "girl" and Geroge C. Scott as the slimey promoter. It's great to see this movie in all it's glory again, I recommend it highly!!!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2007-08-09

Another traditional classic, even if you are not a pool player or fan, worth the time, Gleason in an excellent dramatic role, and Paul, what else needs to be said. Very timeless and holds up well.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best films in the history of cinema........2007-07-30

The metaphorical and allegorical depth of this film can't be described in words. It is a cinematic experience that has the power to change lives. It surely changed mine (for the better).

The film asks these questions: "What is winning? What is losing? What is character?" These questions are slowly and painstakingly answered. The last scene of the film sums it all up with stark and painful clarity. It is a morality play like no other. In my opinion, "The Hustler" is an undeniably brilliant film which has the power to remind us - continuously - that personal integrity is what counts most in life.

Without integrity, winning means nothing and character cannot be attained. With it, a man or woman "wins" no matter what the final score of any game might be. Paul Newman's character, "Fast Eddie", says it all in the end when he states, "How can I lose?", during the last scene of the film. Watch it and you'll see what I mean.

5 out of 5 stars The Hustler - Still a classic.......2007-07-19

What else can you say? Paul Newman as the fallable Eddie Felson, Jackie Gleason as the great Minnesota Fats....even a cameo by billiards legend Willie Mosconi brings back memories of an era long since gone. If you haven't seen this (perhaps living in a cave), you must!

5 out of 5 stars TWO OTHER TITLES THAT SHOULD HAVE COME OUT.......2007-07-12

As much as I love this film, and all of the actors, I just wish that instead of releasing a new version of this title SO SOON after the first version came out, two other titles featuring these two great actors should see the light of day. Newmans "SOMETIMES A GREAT NOTION", and Gleasons "SOLDIER IN THE RAIN", should really be released. If you have seen these films, you know what I mean. I would love to hear Paul tell about "SOMETIMES...", on a comentary track, along with a film expert, and what a great cast it has. It never would have been made if it wasn`t for him. And "Soldier..." with a young Steve McQueen as well as the GREAT ONE, is also up there in my book. So please, who ever is the powers that be, please try to get these two titles released.

5 out of 5 stars Bloody hilarious and clever.......2007-07-13

Definitely one of the best movies ever seen. Gave Vinnie Jones credibility as an actor and in my opinion, made some people notice Jason Statham. Never short of action and typical Brit humour. One of the defining movies of British cinema

5 out of 5 stars Guy Richie At his Best.......2007-05-30

I already own his movie "Snatch" and that brings me to tears laughing, this movie is no exception. The way way he draws you into the storyline and the characters reactions are hilarious. Absolutly love this movie.

4 out of 5 stars A triumph of attitude and style.......2007-05-26

Looking back on "Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels," it's not hard to see why Director Guy Ritchie became one of the hottest directors around. It's a rollicking joyride of a film that delivers non-stop action, head-spinning plot twists and plenty of laughs.

The movie centers around four young punks who chip in some money so Eddy (Nick Moran), the master card player of the group, can enter a high-stakes card game with Hatchet Harry (P.H. Moriarity), a local gang boss whose specialties include gambling and porn. Unfortunately for Eddy, he's in way over his head, and ends up owing Harry a cool 500,000 pounds. His penalty if he doesn't come up with the money in a week? Having his fingers cut off one by one by Harry's mammoth enforcer, Barry the Baptist (Lenny McLean).

Eddy and his friends Soap, Tom and Bacon are understandably distraught at this turn of events. As they rack their brains to come up with a plan to scratch together the money, they overhear their neighbors discussing plans to rob a wealthy group of drug dealers. A plan is quickly hatched to ambush the theives and steal the drug money that they stole. And did I mention that a seemingly unrelated pair of antique shotguns manages to work its way into the picture?

Needless to say, when Eddy & Co. put their plan into action, glorious mayhem ensues. The cast, which includes European soccer star Vinnie Jones as Harry's collector Big Chris, is a likeable bunch all around. But the film's real star is director Ritchie, who pulls out all the stops to command our attention, from freeze frames to slo-mo to speed-up and everything in between.

Naysayers call the plot ridiculous and lament the film's lack of substance. Come to think of it, the police do seem conspicuously absent considering all the gunplay, drug dealing and theivery that's going on. And even diehard fans of "Lock" will likely admit that it's ultimately a triumph of attitude & style over substance.

In spite of its shortcomings, though, "Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels" feels blisteringly alive from start to finish, a thrilling rollercoaster of a movie that's well worth the price of admission.

5 out of 5 stars Unique but Great........2007-03-29

This movie has a more advanced story line portrayed through a heavy dialog, with highly developed fun characters that drive the movie. Typical Guy Ritchie film.
Directors Cut is worth the extra money.

4 out of 5 stars A Classic.......2007-03-14

I forgot how much I enjoyed this movie. Good characters, good story line and a good mix of humor and drama. If you haven't seen it - see it now.

History will place an asterisk next to A.I. as the film Stanley Kubrick might have directed. But let the record also show that Kubrick--after developing this project for some 15 years--wanted Steven Spielberg to helm this astonishing sci-fi rendition of Pinocchio, claiming (with good reason) that it veered closer to Spielberg's kinder, gentler sensibilities. Spielberg inherited the project (based on the Brian Aldiss short story "Supertoys Last All Summer Long") after Kubrick's death in 1999, and the result is an astounding directorial hybrid. A flawed masterpiece of sorts, in which Spielberg's gift for wondrous enchantment often clashes (and sometimes melds) with Kubrick's harsher vision of humanity, the film spans near and distant futures with the fairy-tale adventures of an artificial boy named David (Haley Joel Osment), a marvel of cybernetic progress who wants only to be a real boy, loved by his mother in that happy place called home.

Echoes of Spielberg's Empire of the Sun are clearly heard as young David, shunned by his trial parents and tossed into an unfriendly world, is joined by fellow "mecha" Gigolo Joe (played with a dancer's agility by Jude Law) in his quest for a mother-and-child reunion. Parallels to Pinocchio intensify as David reaches "the end of the world" (a Manhattan flooded by melted polar ice caps), and a far-future epilogue propels A.I. into even deeper realms of wonder, even as it pulls Spielberg back to his comfort zone of sweetness and soothing sentiment. Some may lament the diffusion of Kubrick's original vision, but this is Spielberg's A.I. (complete with one of John Williams's finest scores), a film of astonishing technical wizardry that spans the spectrum of human emotions and offers just enough Kubrick to suggest that humanity's future is anything but guaranteed. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Pure Magic.......2007-09-04

One of the most misunderstood movies of all time. David is a robot that develops a "bond" with his "mother" A perfectly crafted movie from the brain of Steven Spielberg and Stanley Kubrick. It's a movie that will make both of them proud.

This is a movie that frustrates more than it profounds. It's a delightful movie with a wonderful performance from Haley Joel Osment.

This Two-Disc Set is definitely worth it. It includes hours of features and some nice interviews. Plus the movie looks amazing.

It's definitely recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Watch this movie if you are excessively happy.......2007-08-15

Movies exist to entertain us, to make us happy, to give us relief from our tedious boring lives or to give us something interesting to think about. Even movies with sad endings fulfil at least one of these purposes but AI Artificial Intelligence was extremely depressing for every minute of its 146 min length.

Artificial Intelligence is set in a future world where rising oceans have sunk many of the world's coastal cities. Humans have created androids to be prostitutes, nannies, etc. The androids are very intelligent and can feel emotions but have virtually no rights. They are hunted and slaughtered by fanatical humans who serve as antagonists in the movie.
The story is about an android boy seeking the love of his human mother. It was hopeless right from the beginning. David seems like an ordinary child but his behaviour is inhuman in a very subtle way (excellent acting by Haley Joel Osment). David is programmed to love his mother unconditionally but he is manipulated by his human brother into making some very big mistakes. Feeling sorry for him, his mother abandons David, instead of sending him back to the factory to be disassembled. He spends the rest of the movie wandering around, looking for the Blue Fairy to make him a real boy. He's accompanied by an android gigolo and an intelligent teddy bear that do their best to put some comic relief into this dreary movie.

Artificial Intelligence is supposed to be a story about the human inability to love anyone who is different. David is impossible not to feel sorry for. No one deserves what happened to him. Monica seems really evil for failing to love David after making him love her. But the real sin is getting David in the first place. Humans are not supposed to love machines. It's unnatural. It's wrong. If our lovers and children are replaced with machines it can only lead to the inevitable extinction of the human race. It may be immoral to kill sentient beings but the Flesh Fairs are doing the right thing. They instinctively see the androids as a threat to the survival of their race and for good reason. The real tragedy in this movie is not David's personal story, but the fact that androids will gradually overcome humanity's instinctual revulsion as they become more human-like and humanity will condemn itself to a slow, lingering death.

The movie's ending is happy, sad and very bizarre at the same time. This is a movie that will leave an unpleasant feeling in your mind long after it's over.

4 out of 5 stars The One Day in Your Life That Makes Your Life Worth Living.......2007-07-21

For excellent analyses and synopses of this film, please see the so many other wonderful reviews of this film written by Amazon reviewers. I echo the many reviews that commend this film for its intriguing plot, marvelous acting, and awesome special effects, but most of all, for its incredible HEART. Yes, no question that the film has many dark aspects to it, and it's probably a good thing that I saw this film for the first time on TV tonight, rather than at the theatre, because I was moved to tears throughout much of the film. I'm going to buy the DVD through Amazon.

In the end, the extraordinary insight that I took away from this film was that the experience of loving and of being loved, EVEN IF FOR JUST FOR ONE DAY--whether it be love between yourself and a beloved parent, child, or relative; a beloved pet; a beloved life partner; or a beloved friend--THAT ONE DAY MAKES YOUR LIFE WORTH LIVING. Most of us are so blessed and lucky with more than that one special day with our beloved ones, but this beautiful film perhaps will make you hark back to a certain illuminated or heightened day you experienced that kind of love in your own life and make you realize all you have to be so thankful for in this life.

5 out of 5 stars A film that pulls you into it.......2007-07-21

A.I. Artificial Intelligence is a story about a grieving family who has lost their son. At the same time, a person who has built robots comes up with an idea. We all know that robots can't love and can't express human emotion. But what if there was? What if there was a robot that can love, like a child who loves his parents? This is exactly the idea of this scientist. He creates a child, a boy robot (David), who is one of a kind. A robot who can love, and has human emotion. The grieving family then adopts this boy robot, and that's where the real story begins. If you have not seen the film, you may want to skip the rest of this review as alot of the story is revealed.

At first, it's the questions if a human can love a robot. The mother has a hard time adjusting to David, as she knows that he is not a real boy. Then, their real son is healed and he is brought home. Since the void is now lifted, eventually, the mother abondons David by leaving him in the forest alone. You feel sorry for David as he cries out to his mother on why she is abandoning him. He feels that she does not love him, and that he has displeased her. Again, this is something a regular robot cannot do. But this boy robot was created to love, and to be loved. But he feels that he is not getting loved in return. So, he sets out to find a fairy who will turn into him into a real boy so that his mother will love him.

Some may not like the fact that the movie is sort of based on Pinocchio. But this did not bother me at all. After all, this is a young boy so wouldn't a fairy tail be more appropriate?

As the story goes, David ends up being with other robots in a circus-like act where all the old and stray A.I. robots are destroyed in a brutal manner. David watches as the robots are put to their death. A man and his daughter then discover this boy caged with the robots, and the man is shocked to discover that this boy is a machine. He doesn't want to put David in the act, but the leader does it anyway. David hangs on to another robot, who was introduced earlier in the film as a robot who is obsessed with the ladies. The two robots, David and his companion robot, are then prepared to be melted by hot liquid. Your own emotions are once again played with as David cries out for his life. The other robot does not though. And why? It goes back to the beginning: David was created with human emotion. The audience of the act notices this, and they stop the act from being performed. David is now able to continue on his adventure.

The film has a touch of humor to it. This makes the film enjoyable as well as emotional. There are happy times, and then there are sad times. These are great recipies to making a masterpiece.

As the story goes on, David makes many other discoveries along his adventure. We see a underwater Manhattan, then a old underwater amusement park. Then David finnaly finds the fairy. He prays, and prays, and prays for the fairy to turn him into a real boy. But we know better, and the film does not make the fairy tail come to life that easy. 2000 years go by and now everything is ice. Humans are now gone, and David is the only one left with memory of human beings. Other beings, who look like aliens but may not be, read David's mind and see everything that he has seen. As the end of the film arrives, David gets the answer to the question he was asking. Somehow, he is suddenly in his house again, but it's different. And who is there? Why, it's the magic fairy! David gets to spend time with his mother for one day. And then his mother tells him at the end that she has always loved him. This is the final scene where your emotions are tested, as David can no longer see his mother again. Yet, as he sleeps next to his mom, he still dreams and goes to that place where dreams are made.

Haley Joel Osment, Jude Law, and every star in the film did an outstanding performance. The effects of the film are amazing and future-like. In conclusion, this film is a masterpiece and it tugs at your heartstrings. It makes you think, it makes you feel, it makes you a part of it. I recommend this film to everyone, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

5 out of 5 stars Not a bad flick, with an overlooked message.......2007-07-21

This movie gets a lot of harsh criticism, but it's actually pretty good. Most criticism make sense, but the movie's flaws don't seem so apparent if you see what the movie is trying to say and can empathize with the characters. Man at the current time, is very cynical and uncaring. And because today's generation wasn't really raised by their mothers it is very difficult for the majority of people to understand a story about a young boy's love for his mother and the hurt he feels when separated and alienated from her. Thanks to the women's lib movement women spend most of their time outside the home and as a result spend little time with their children. Therefore, if a person has never had a proper mother/child relationship how can he or she emphasize with a child who is separated from his mother? The movie runs a bit long, which isn't usually a bad thing, but perhaps it harms this movie because somethings simply could have been cut. The first half goes on for a very long time building up the story, so you're kind of tired by the time the action half of the movie begins. The ending is a bit confusing with the aliens and everything and perhaps could have been improved and shortened. Many criticize the movie for being a rewrite of the Pinocchio story. What they have to realize is that most movies are simply old folktales, mythology, or even older movies simply rewritten. In short, this movie isn't perfect, but in no way is it a bad movie, simply misunderstood by today's fast culture.

Set more than a decade after the story in Chinatown, this 1990 sequel brings Jack Nicholson back to the screen as L.A. private detective Jake Gittes. Older, fatter, worn, and frustrated, the Jake of 1948 is still haunted by the tragic events of the earlier film. While investigating a case involving adultery and questionable land dealings by an L.A. tycoon (Harvey Keitel as the other Jake), Gittes unexpectedly confronts a few old ghosts and discovers that the resource of choice in Southern California--one for which people die--is no longer water but oil. The film had a notorious production history, with Nicholson taking over the project from writer-director Robert Towne, and the dense plot can be difficult to follow. But if The Two Jakes doesn't measure up to the legendary status of its stylish predecessor, the film does satisfy on its own terms and brings the events of Chinatown to a moving conclusion. Terrific work by Keitel and supporting players Meg Tilly, Madeleine Stowe, Eli Wallach, and Ruben Blades. --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars Great Sequel.......2006-11-12

Nicholson is as cool as ever in this sequel to Chinatown. Great film noir style.

5 out of 5 stars As Good As It Gets.......2006-10-04

Usually sequels are not as good as the original films they follow...one need only think of,say"Jaws"to get this point..But with "The Two Jakes"the sequel to"Chinatown"the sequel is every bit as good as the original...The film follows the main charecter from "Chinatown",detective Jake Gittes, who has a new and disturbing case that has threads reaching back into time and inter-connecting with the original plotline..Many of the stars from the original reprise thier roles, most notably Jack Nicholson, who also directed..At the time of its original theatrical release the critics were not kind to the film,or to the director/star...Perhaps this was to have been expected, inasmuchas "Chinatown"ranks high on the list of"Best ever"films..
on the other hand most professional film critics are not only herd animals, who too often follow one another's lead like dogs sniffing each other's rear ends but have little regard for what the public thinks..if one or two"Famous"critics get a bug up thier backsides about a film it is a sure bet that the rest, afraid of being contrary,.will follow suit..also,having to sit through films of all sorts make these people jaded...they expect novelty, and are disappointed by stories, direction, acting, ect that the rest of us find quite entertaining...And most professional critics seem to find the most obscure, often foreign films to be spectacular, while most normal people do not,as if cutting edge films about, say, three men who have hernias and like bowling together on friday nights offers the very zenith of acting and film-making achievement...
So forget what the professional critics might have thought about"The Two Jakes",it was a dandy film...You won't be disappointed...

4 out of 5 stars Not Better Than Chinatown, But What Is?.......2006-07-22

"The Two Jakes" is the sequel to "Chinatown." Chinatown is one of my favorite films, it's number 19 on AFI's Top 100, it won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for Robert Towne. A sequel didn't seem necessary, and it's not, but this somehow managed to work. This movie has the formula for a bad sequel; different plot, different actors, different director. Well, not different actor's...Only one character returns from Chinatown, the plot is semi-related, and Jack Nicholson is the director. He's not bad either. The script is by Robert Towne, which is even more surprising. I can't believe he would be inspired to write a sequel. The Two Jakes was made 16 years after Chinatown (in 1990) and it does take place a significant amount of years later; But Jack is still Jake. Nicholson returns as Jake Gittes, our protagonist who walked away from a death at the end of Chinatown. The events from that movie still plague him, but he still does what he does best...He's a private investigator and frequently investigates what got him caught up in all the trouble from the first movie...Marital infidelity. Gittes is investigating whether Jake Berman's (Harvey Keitel) wife is cheating on him, and she is. When Gittes schedules the confrontation, Jake (the Keitel one) shoots his wife's lover...Who also happens to be his business partner. Now Jake (the Nicholson one) is caught up in another conspiracy, which might be directly linked to his past. If you haven't seen Chinatown, don't see The Two Jakes.
There are a few references to the first film in here which people who haven't seen the first one won't get. The Two Jakes is entertaining, smart, occasionally exciting, and this is just one of those character's that Nicholson was born to play. Problem is, it drags in places (and it's 7 minutes longer than Chinatown at 138 minutes). As far as sequels go, however, this is a real winner. If you liked (or loved) Chinatown, then you should check this out...But it's definitely not required watching.

3 out of 5 stars Can murder or suicide ever be truly altruistic?.......2006-06-30

This is the kid sister of Chinatown. She is not as clever or as pretty as her elder, but she raises the same question: Why do we go to Jack Nicholson movies anyway? There are many allusions to Chinatown and lots of characters to figure out how they fit in. Be careful and don't take it any more seriously than it takes itself and it is reasonably amusing.

4 out of 5 stars A worthy sequel to CHINATOWN..........2006-03-20

As I recall, this movie was originally shunned upon it's theatrical release in 1990. It was an ambitious sequel to one of the milestone films of the 70's that went through a troubled production and studio turnaround through years. Yet star/ director Jack Nicholson slips comfortably back into JJ Gittes territory and creates a damned fine film with as much mindbending twists as featured in CHINATOWN. Though maybe not as amazing as that film, THE TWO JAKES is still worthwhile in its own right and features a terrific cast: Harvey Keitel, Madeliene Stowe, and the late, great Richard Farnsworth. As usual, Paramount has given us an anemic and strange DVD (the thatrical trailer is included, letterboxed to 2.35:1 even though the film itself is 1.85:1???) and due to the film's poor box-office showing it will probably never see a better release, even though it deserves one.

A sad, melancholy ache pervades Brokeback Mountain, Ang Lee's haunting, moving film that, like his other movies, explores societal constraints and the passions that lurk underneath. This time, however, instead of taking on ancient China, 19th-century England, or '70s suburbia, Lee uses the tableau of the American West in the early '60s to show how two lovers are bound by their expected roles, how they rebel against them, and the repercussions for each of doing so--but the romance here is between two men. Ennis Del Mar (Heath Ledger) and Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal) are two itinerant ranchers looking for work in Wyoming when they meet and embark on a summer sheepherding job in the shadow of titular Brokeback Mountain. The taciturn Ennis, uncommunicative in the extreme, finds himself opening up around the gregarious Jack, and the two form a bond that surprisingly catches fire one cold night out in the wilderness. Separating at the end of the summer, each goes on to marry and have children, but a reunion years later proves that, if anything, their passion for each other has grown significantly. And while Jack harbors dreams of a life together, the tight-lipped Ennis is unable to bring himself to even consider something so revolutionary.

Its open, unforced depiction of love between two men made Brokeback an instant cultural touchstone, for both good and bad, as it was tagged derisively as the "gay cowboy movie," but also heralded as a breakthrough for mainstream cinema. Amidst all the hoopla of various agendas, though, was a quiet, heartbreaking love story that was both of its time and universal--it was the quintessential tale of star-crossed lovers, but grounded in an ever-changing America that promised both hope and despair. Adapted by Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana from Annie Proulx's short story, the movie echoes the sparse bleakness of McMurtry's The Last Picture Show with its fading of the once-glorious West; but with Lee at the helm, it also resembles The Ice Storm, as it showed the ripple effects of a singular event over a number of people. As always, Lee's work with actors is unparalleled, as he elicits graceful, nuanced performances from Michelle Williams and Anne Hathaway as the wives affected overtly and subliminally by their husbands' affair, and Gyllenhaal brings surprising dimensions to a character that could have easily just been a puppy dog of a boy. It's Ledger, however, who's the breakthrough in the film, and his portrait of an emotionally repressed man both undone and liberated by his feelings is mesmerizing and devastating. Spare in style but rich with emotion, Brokeback Mountain earns its place as a classic modern love story. --Mark Englehart

4 out of 5 stars "I wish I knew how to quit you???".......2007-09-16

Too many people focused on the supposed homosexual content. To my dismay I could not figure out what all the big fuss was about. I emphasised with these characters as I or anyone who has ever been in a relationship could feel their pain. Jack (Jake Gyllenhaal) is the one who wants to throw it all out there and go for it, he's not afraid to say 'I Love You'. Ennis (Heath Ledger) is reserved and can't allow his head to follow his heart. That sounds awfully like traits that heterosexual people have too. Ang Lee does an absolutely fantastic job with his character's development and the astounding scenery in which this all happens. The bond that both of our lead characters have is truly beautiful and pure. 1963, mid America, work is scarce and two farmhands are hired to tend to sheep on a remote mountain. I believe everybody who hasn't seen the film know the rest. The character driven story is held by a tremendous young cast of actors. Gyllenhaal puts himself up there to become a great leading man in Hollywood, Anne Hathaway has become the new Reese Witherspoon and in time assuming she stays on track will become a leading force. Michelle Williams has left James Van Der Beek crying into his Pillow back in Dawson's Creek as she has now come into her own. Finally Heath Ledger
