Description

This impassioned, insightful drama from Spain tells an emotional story in which love and hate, friendship, life and death are all weighed in generous proportions.

Jaume Clara, a brilliant and accomplished professor of medieval literature, should be enjoying the fruits of a life of hard work and achievement, but he is beset with failing health and distraught over a passionate fixation on his beautiful, intelligent but withdrawn student, David. When a response to an anonymous call-boy`s ad unexpectedly brings David to his door, Jaume forgoes the tempting opportunity for easy sex with his student and instead hatches an elaborate and dangerous plot to manifest his deep love, one which risks his career, his friendship with a beloved colleague, and the possibility of cruelty and violence at the hands of heartless David. The two men`s mismatched passions and their well-matched intellects make for a feverish war of wills, one from which neither one will survive unharmed.

An official selection of the Berlin International Film Festival, this taut, high-stakes drama is brought vividly to life by an outstanding cast and a sure directorial hand that perfectly modulates the story`s twin elements of introspection and shock.

Left Me Hanging.......2003-11-08

Amic/amat starts out with some interesting shots of the lead oiling his body up and donning leather; but as with this opening scene, the film ends up teasing with no real delivery, certainly in terms of erotic representation but also in terms of its fundamental story-line. The film has a somewhat anti-climactic ending and the motives of the characters are not fleshed out satisfactorily. Character motives for prostitution, abortion, same-sex attraction, divorce, and violence begin to be strongly suggested or hinted at, but then frustratingly are not carried out to any substantial conclusions. This is the fatal flaw of the film, as I saw it. Amic/amat has some compelling performances (such as by the dying prof) and features an attractive male lead who might have had his physical form and acting talents better exercised in a wholly thought-out film. I wonder if the screenplay writer had a coronary midway through the project and then an ending was just patched together? Erotically and intellectually, Amic/amat just left me "hanging":)
