Dr. Maelstrom & Sara Bellum .......2005-12-18
There are not any special features on this disc, with the exceptions of language, et cetera.
There are 4 episodes, and they are probably the least interesting in the whole series, especially the parts with Dr. Maelstrom. They drag this on for three whole episodes; while looking into Carmen's past is good, Dr. Maelstrom coming back could have been plotted better.
The final episode (a bonus), is a bit more interesting, but not by much. When it Rains show lets you know more about Sara Bellum, Carmen's gadget girl. The plot is twisted, but the ending is ingenious.
Overall, When it Rains saves the DVD from a flat-out 0, but overall you do not miss to much if you are as not to buy the DVD.

Unusual.......2003-08-24
I do like this film better than most. My initial impulse for buying it came because I wanted to see a Quebecois film, a french-language film not from France. It's facinatingly told by a fish waiting for his fate. The main character, Bibian is beautiful but kind of unlikeable. But during some of the scenes with her blonde friend, you can glimpse a little bit of sunshine in Bibian. Some tragedies happen to her and she ends up creating a second chance for herself.
I have not seen very many canadian films, but I would recommend this one to anyone who appreciates good cinema. It's also a cool portrait of contempory life in Montreal, though I don't know how realistic it can really be. And there are a few scenes that could have been done without, like the end where the fish will reveal the meaning of life and then something happens to stop him, it sort of cheapens it slightly, or maybe I just don't have a sense of humor?
Dude, it's a talking fish............2003-08-17
A film about a talking fish who tells the tragic story of a woman's experiences with alienation, abortion, and death? It sounded like my sort of thing. i like French films, indy films, surrealist films; why wouldn'd i like this? i thought wrong. Just because a films original dosn't mean that it's any good. And Maelstrom proves that, all right. Definitely, this movie is on my top ten list of the worst movies i've ever paid to see, including The Matrix Reloaded, Bubble Boy, Punch Drunk Love and Star Trek: Nemesis. Don't waste your time.
The meaning of Life.......2003-04-05
This is probably one of the more original films I've seen in a long while. The director has clearly drawn influence from the Blue White Red trilogy, but that don't take away it's originality or it's power. It's about abortion, death, love, philosophy, and a talking fish. Go figure, one of the greatest films of the year.
Awesome.......2002-05-06
This is the new wave of Canadian movies, intense, smart, and incredibly wicked. Croze's act is flawless, and watching the original french version of the movie adds a twist to her performance.
An uncategorizable gem.......2002-03-22
My favorite film at Sundance in 2001. Rare is the film that can confront death and alienation with humor, and with a profound lightness. Maelstrom is also incredibly romantic. An uncategorizable gem, beautifully shot.

Customer Reviews:
Outstanding and shocking (even without the talking fish).......2002-12-03
Right, so if you've heard anything about Maelstrom, it was probably "Yuck/wow/hmmm, it's narrated by a series of fish on the chopping block."
Yep, it is. That's not why you should see it, though.
Bibi is a successful fashion designer in Montreal whose personal life is in a shambles; she can't escape from her famous mother's shadow, nor from the shock and guilt of the abortion she has in the first scene of the film. She gets drunk one night and kills a Norwegian fisherman in a hit-and-run accident. From that moment, what's left of her life becomes entwined with what's left of his.
Bitterly funny moments abound: the soundtrack in the abortion scene plays "Good Morning Starshine"; an obnoxious journalist tries to interview an uncooperative (and hungover) Bibi; she very bluntly declares her love (ok, lust) on an airport runway; she is forced to drink to a toast calling for her own disembowellment; her best friend loses track of how many abortions she's had, and unwittingly sings a gory Norwegian battle song as a lullaby . . .
As the list of "jokes" may indicate, this is often a very dark film. But in the end, it goes a long way toward making you think about the nature of fate, life, death, love, and redemption - and in its odd little way, it's quite uplifting. The cinematography is breathtaking.
And, hey, there's a talking fish.
Hello, Im a talking fishy. NOOOO dont cut my head offfffffff.......2002-05-09
This movie was very unique and beautiful and thats rare in the movie world cuz they all seem to be cut from the same boring cloth nowadays. Anyhoo, its not too artsy fartsy but it reminded me of something Tom Tykwer would do towards the end with the 'fate brought us togeter sort of theme.' it says its a movie about life and death and the earth and sea and yep i see that. a talking fish starts to tell the story and i thought that was very clever and gave it a sortof sci-fi feel which i thought was cool. the cinematography is brilliantly purdy - sortof blueish tones like the panic room camera work - i thought anyhoo... this was indeed a rare gem find in a film world of same old, same old. worth seeing indeed.
canadian gem.......2001-08-31
Maelstrom earned best film, best director, and best actress in canada for good reason. Highly imaginative and original, this is a story about life and death. A story about a young woman told by a 'cronenbergesque' fish on a chopping block.
