A classic 1967 Disney animated film that's loosely based on Rudyard Kipling's book of the same name, Jungle Book tells the story of a young boy Mowgli who was raised by animals in the jungle. When tiger Shere Khan threatens to return to their part of the jungle, the other animals decide that Mowgli must return to the man village in order to ensure his safety. Panther Bagheera has difficulty convincing Mowgli to follow him to the man village and recruits the help of a big lovable bear Baloo. Mowgli's journey is one of wit, song, and many surprises. A timeless film populated by strong characters bursting with personality, great music like "Bare Necessities" and "I Wanna Be Like You," and inspiring animation by Frank Thomas, Ollie Johnston, and other master animators, Jungle Book captivates audiences of all ages.

This Platinum Edition includes everything from the standard bonus features like interactive games, music videos, and deleted songs to exciting and sometimes rare commentaries by everyone from modern day animators to Walt Disney himself, multiple featurettes about specific aspects of the film and its production, and a lengthy deleted scene featuring lost character Rocky the Rhino. Especially interesting for adults and Disney fans are "The Bare Necessities: The making of The Jungle Book" featurette, which explores Walt Disney's commitment to developing strong characters and his insistence that writers, animators, and song writers create a light version of Jungle Book that followed his own personal interpretation of the story, and the "The Lure of The Jungle Book" featurette, which discusses Frank Thomas' and Ollie Johnston's amazing contribution to the film as prolific animators and the inspiration and influence that their work provided for future animators including Brad Bird (The Incredibles), Andreas Deja (Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King), Sergio Pablos (Tarzan), Will Finn (Home on the Range), and Eric Goldberg (Fantasia 2000). The full length commentary by Bruce Reitherman (voice of Mowgli), animator Andreas Deja, and composer Richard Sherman with its interspersed archival commentary of Disney greats from the original creative team (Frank Thomas, Ollie Johnston, Woolie Reitherman, and others) is also very interesting and insightful. --Tami Horiuchi

Description

One of the most popular Disney films ever, THE JUNGLE BOOK is a song-filled celebration of friendship, fun, and adventure set in a lush and colorful world. Inspired by Rudyard Kipling's "Mowgli" stories, Disney's 19th animated masterpiece was the last animated feature that had Walt Disney's personal touch. The jubilant adventure begins when Mowgli, a little boy raised by wolves, is urged by his friend Bagheera, a wise old panther, to seek safety in the man village. Feeling very much at home in the jungle, Mowgli resists and runs off. Much to Bagheera's dismay, Mowgli meets a new friend with a happy-go-lucky philosophy of life -- Baloo the Bear, a lovable "jungle bum." Together, the three buddies find the journey back to civilization anything but civilized! They encounter a crazy orangutan, the hypnotic and sly snake Kaa, and the menacing Shere Khan! Fully restored for this 30th anniversary edition, this enduring classic swings with jazzy toe-tapping music, including the Academy Award(R)-nominated "The Bare Necessities," and the freewheeling "I Wan'na Be Like You"! A thrilling story for all ages, THE JUNGLE BOOK is an absolute necessity for your video collection.

5 out of 5 stars A review for parents.......2007-07-17

With so many Disney DVDs to choose from, is "The Jungle Book," even a new "Platinum" version, really a must buy?

Absolutely. Just 64 minutes long, this unpretentious adventure is full of imaginative characters, charming song and dance routines, interesting themes and innocent good humor. Unlike many Disney films, "The Jungle Book" doesn't strive to be high art and has no groundbreaking special effects, but it's still one of the company's best animated films. And now the film has now been "digitally enhanced," with a brighter contrast and cleaner colors. I've seen some clips from this new release, and they really look good.

Telling the tale of Mowgli, a human boy brought up in the jungles of India, the movie is a freewheeling adaptation of some Victorian-era short stories by British writer Rudyard Kipling. Rescued as an infant by a protective panther named Bagheera, the boy is raised by wolves and adopted by a carefree bachelor bear, Baloo. Disney punches up the stories with Western jokes and music (the pop soundtrack includes Baloo's and orangutan King Louie's infectious scat duet "I Wanna Be Like You" and Baloo's perky prickly pear primer, "The Bear Necessities"), but wisely eliminates Kipling's patronizing overtones.

"The Jungle Book" teaches children a number of good life lessons. It demonstrates that the world includes enemies as well as friends, and that enemies sometimes disguise themselves as friends. It argues that though its fun to pretend you're someone you're not, it's best to accept the person you are. Finally, the film teaches young viewers two lessons about love. First, as Baloo learns when he realizes he must finally return Mowgli to the "man village," that true love is unselfish. And second, as Mowgli learns in the final scene, that the ultimate male fulfillment is romantic love -- or, as some cynics view the segment, the pursuit of a cute, wide-eyed flirt.

Parents can take note of a classic Disney touch: the acceptance of both religion and science. The film begins with the infant Mowgli lying in a basket along a riverbank, a reference to Moses that's not in the Kipling stories. Later, however, there's a nod to Darwin, as the orangutan King Louie greets the human boy with an outstretched hand, saying "Shake hands, cousin."

If nothing else, adults can enjoy identifying the distinctive character voices (Kaa is voiced by Sterling Holloway, already known as the "Alice in Wonderland" Cheshire Cat and soon to be famous as Winnie the Pooh), laughing at the chorus of Beatle-like vultures (one looks just like Ringo), or wonder just what a large, furry bear is doing in a tropical jungle in the first place.

If you're a fan of the story you may also want to check out Disney's live-action (and non-musical) version, 1994's Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book. Though it's a little violent for younger kids (one soldier is sucked under a pond of quicksand and dies a slow death), this PG film is not really scary and quite the exotic adventure. Its stars include Sam Neill and, in a bit part, John Cleese.

It cant get any better than this. Disney beloved animated classic "The Jungle Book" finally gets the long overdue Platinum treatment. This new 40th Anniversary release will include an all-new digital restoration of the film and for the very first time ever, this release will feature the movie in 1.75:1 widescreen aspect ratio (Please be aware that "Jungle Book" was filmed in 1.37:1 aspect ratio and was cropped for its theatrical screenings. According to dvdtimes, extras on this platinum edition will include:

Disney's Kipling: Walt's Magic Touch on A Literary Classic - A discarded film treatment from 1963 includes scenes from Kipling's "Mowgli Stories" and more are used to illustrate Walt's interpretation of the literary masterpiece

Disney's 1967 animated feature seems even more entertaining now than it did upon first release, with a hall-of-fame vocal performance by Phil Harris as Baloo, the genial bear friend of feral child Mowgli. Based on fiction by Rudyard Kipling, the film goes its own way as Disney animation will, but the strong characters and smart casting (George Sanders as the villainous tiger, Shere Khan) make it one of the studio's stronger feature-length cartoons. Songs include "The Bare Necessities" and "Trust in Me." --Tom Keogh

Though it diverges wildly from the the original story by Rudyard Kipling Disney's THE JUNGLE BOOK is one of the mouse's best classic animated musical movies. The voice actors are excellent and the songs are clever, memorable and move the story forward. There is enough action and humor for adults to enjoy the movie and though there are villains they are not too scary for the little ones. All ends happily though bittersweetly.

5 out of 5 stars Still love this movie..........2007-01-12

My Daddy took me to see this movie when I was a small child. This movie has been a lasting and happy memory of my childhood, so I was thrilled when my grandson fell in love with it also. I had a VHS version of the movie and when it was destroyed I panicked because Disney had already stopped production of it. After checking EVERYWHERE I finally located the movie with Amazon.com as my middleman. I ordered the CD version, which was not cheap, but I got it at the best price through Amazon.
My grandson is singing with the movie again and happy. This movie is timeless and well worth the price paid.

Michael Douglas won an Oscar for perfectly embodying the Reagan-era credo that "greed is good." As a Donald Trump-like Wall Street raider aptly named Gordon Gecko (for his reptilian ability to attack corporate targets and swallow them whole), Douglas found a role tailor-made to his skill in portraying heartless men who've sacrificed humanity to power. He's a slick, seductive role model for the young ambitious Wall Street broker played by Charlie Sheen, who falls into Gecko's sphere of influence and instantly succumbs to the allure of risky deals and generous payoffs. With such perks as a high-rise apartment and women who love men for their money, Charlie's like a worm on Gecko's hook, blind to the corporate maneuvering that puts him at odds with his own father (played by Sheen's offscreen father, Martin). With his usual lack of subtlety, writer-director Oliver Stone drew from the brokering experience of his own father to tell this Faustian tale for the "me" decade, but the movie's sledgehammer style is undeniably effective. A cautionary warning that Stone delivers on highly entertaining terms, Wall Street grabs your attention while questioning the corrupted values of a system that worships profit at the cost of one's soul. --Jeff Shannon

Description

In this riveting, behind-the-scenes look at big business in the 1980's, an ambitious young broker (Charlie Sheen) is lured into the illegal, lucrative world of corporate espionage when he is seduced by the power, status and financial wizardry of Wall Street legend Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas). But he soon discovers that the pursuit of overnight riches comes at a price that's too high to pay.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars How Wealth is Created on Wall Street.......2007-09-09

The film begins by showing men at work at dawn, and other people going to work. It shows the escalator at the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Stockbrokers are cold calling people to get them to buy the stocks that are being pushed in a Bull market. The stock market matches buyers to sellers. Financier Gordon Gekko knows how to profit from bad news. Bud Fox, a seller of stock, explains himself to his father (who knows of an unannounced FAA ruling). Will Bud use this inside information to better himself? Is it legal?

Bud visits Gekko in a bid to move up in the world of high finance. Stocks are traded like baseball cards. Bud gets an order to buy a stock for Gekko. There are rewards for those who can pick winners in the stock market. Information is a valuable commodity, it can win battles. Bud shadows a British financier to learn what he is doing in NYC. This news causes Gekko to start buying shares in an Ohio steel company. Others also buy this stock, doubling its price. That night Bud visits the Gekko home. Sir Larry also visits Gekko to make an tender offer for Gekko's holdings. Gekko is also a shrewd investor in commodities like works of art. But takes a job with a maintenance company to allow him to snoop at other companies. [This is what the Watergate burglars did.] Bud's new found wealth allows him to pay back his debts, and then move to a new apartment in the East Side. He is also promoted for his increased sales; another salesman is let go because his didn't meet his quota. Life is sweet. Gekko's lawyer explains how Bud is to deposit money in an offshore bank in the Cayman Islands. There will be no traceable links to Gekko.

The "Stock Watch" group noted how Teldar was in play. Will Gekko buy it to split it up and sell off its parts? Is a company run to benefit its managers and workers or its owners? If ownership is widely distributed then management has a free hand to reward itself. What happens to an "over-funded pension fund"? [Does this explain the loss of pensions after the 1990s?] This film explains how new owners can profit by cutting wages for its workers and using this money to buy the company! Bud has a plan to save Bluestar Airlines; can it work? There is a dramatic scene between Bud and his father. Gekko has control of the shares, he can make more money quicker by breaking up Bluestar and selling off the pieces. [This allows bigger companies to eliminate competition and then raise their prices.] Gekko will also profit from looting the pension fund. The SEC is on their trail, they bring down the curtain on these financial looters. The dramatic ending is very ironic, Bud learned how to make a deal when it counts.

This story is loosely based on the "junk bonds" used to buy up and sell off businesses in the 1980s. Decreased Federal regulation allowed this. This film was completed before the October 1987 crash. You can learn how wealth is created when rich financiers know when to buy and sell. They buy under-valued assets and sell them at a higher price. Corporations with decadent management are their targets, like injured cattle for big cats in the wild. When 1% of the people own half the wealth in a country what is the end result? [This film shows the high-technology of the 1980s: personal computers, bulky wireless telephones, etc. Note the work place environment.] This could not have happened before the 1980s under the New Deal SEC laws.

5 out of 5 stars Charlie Sheen.......2007-08-25

1987 was a long time ago but Charlie Sheen along with Michael Douglas, aka Gordon Geeco taught us greed is good. At least that is what was going on back then. The best scene is when Douglas is talking to Sheen on his outdated cell phone from the beach.

Corey Cotta, Author of All of Yesterdays Tomorrows.

1 out of 5 stars No no no.......2007-07-20

Maybe this was a good film in 1987, but by today's standards it is god awful. The only entertainment value comes from watching Michael Douglas talk on a cell phone the size of a shoe, then later he's amazed by a handheld television set. Other than that small amount of nostalgia, this is a horribly acted, poorly written, cliche filled mess. I cannot understand the positive reviews this gets, even by late 1980s standards. If you really want to hear some terrible dialogue, just watch the part when the union boss walks into Douglas' office. I thought I was watching a cheesy John Wayne impression. Boiler Room is the one to watch, at least that has some decent acting.

5 out of 5 stars Wall Street.......2007-07-10

Oliver Stone's poisonous ode to the "the go, go `80s" hinges on Michael Douglas's bravura, Oscar-winning portrayal of Gekko, seemingly a composite of Michael Milken and Ivan Boesky, whose mantra "greed is good" justifies any means to execute the big deal, including insider trading. Subtle it's not, but then neither was the time, nor its players. Director Stone (whose father was a broker) expertly evokes the dizzying altitude of the mega-wealthy, and young Sheen is perfectly cast as a misguided but willing pawn in a high-stakes game that feels too good to be true--and is. And truly, Douglas was never better.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVED YOU IN WALLSTREET!!.......2007-06-20

What a great line from Hot Shots 2!! This movie was great. Sheen gets thrown in the slammer, and Douglass acts like a big shot the whole movie. Ten piece suits and a lot of other stuff. Sheen probably became a garbage man like in the movie, "Men At Work" after being released from prison.

Sophisticated to a point, this well-executed wolf-man tale works due to its clever setting and enormous star power. We all know Jack Nicholson can go nuts, but the script makes his character aware of his changes, sometimes for the better, early on. The setting, a publishing house in the middle of a takeover, gives the characters dramatic life before the horror elements kicks in. A senior editor about to get the boot, Nicholson's character becomes a new man after being bitten by a wolf. He takes on challenges at work, lives a more robust life, and attracts a new love. But will his newfound energy consume him? Director Mike Nichols keeps the action alive in the first half, but the film peters out at the end with cheap theatrics and the overuse of slow motion. Michelle Pfeiffer has little to do as simply the love interest with a grittier than average personality. Better is James Spader as a smarmy colleague. Nicholson is in fine form, relying on his keen gift to spark interest (a twitch of the head, a look in the eyes), instead of heavy doses of movie makeup. Giuseppe Rotunno's sweeping camerawork sets the mood quite well. Easy to recommend, with the added feature it's hardly gratuitous. --Doug Thomas

Movie is not bad, especially the last scenes of Michelle "transforming".

However, DVD quality is terrible unacceptable!! 2 sides DVD, widescreen and fullscreen. I wonder why cannot put together on one side. The most terrible is menu.....blue screen background, very small movie poster on side and other bottom as play....setup...scene selections etc...no english subtitle.

This is the worst DVD packing that i ever met.

3 out of 5 stars Lacks Bite........2007-06-11

This movie could have been a contender. From the pitch perfect casting of Jack Nicholson in the title role of the wolfman to the superb and moody cinematography of Giuseppe Rotunno, this glossy and well mounted old style Hollywood production should have delivered in spades. And, thats the problem - it should have.

The story is a canny one. Nicholson stars as Wil Randall, a worn down book publisher working in the cut-throat industry of corporate publishing. His smug boss Christopher Plummer is ready to ship him off to a middle european assignment that nobody wants and he is constantly hounded by a younger co-worker (hammed up to-the-hilt by James Spader) for his job. Oh yeah, his wife is also cheating on him behind his back. Its all downhill for Randall, who is the wrong side of 40, tired and pschologically ready for the scrap heap. His downtrodden persona is perfectly presented by Nicholson, as from the opening sequences, we are totally aware of the nauseating corporate politics that revolve around him on a daily basis, and its at this point where the movie soars. The backstabbing, the corporate shenanigans and the general day-to-day grind that every working stiff has to endure - its all here. Only for Nicholson, he's got another problem: He's been attacked by a wolf. I know. Bear with me.

The wolf attack is slight and only used to open up the picture - almost matter of fact. From this point on, Nicholson begins to display heightened senses, acute hearing, enhanced smell and incredible agility - all the hallmarks of a man 20 years younger than his advancing years. This new found lust for life gives Jack not only a boost, but the movie kicks up a gear too (and reminds me of Jeff Goldblum coming to terms with his transformation in "The Fly"), becoming smart, funny and fast moving. However, as the wolfman's curse begins to take hold on Jack, so does the scriptwriters' inabilty to keep this hokey concept afloat.

The problems arise when Michele Pfieffer turns up. Her character is an obviously redemptive foil for Jack, and after her initial "hard faced chick" routine, she spends the rest of the picture running from wolfmen or screaming at various attacks, etc. Its as if the screenwriter did have an initial idea of what he wanted to do with her character - making her strong, forceful, quick witted and three dimensional. However, during the course of the film, she is lost amidst a hodge-podge of juevenile wolf attacks and overt "skirt and high heels" moments. Most of these with occur with James Spader. Who seems to think he is in a children's pantomime and not a summer event movie - his over-the-top werewolf act makes Nicholson seem positively subdued in comparison, and he almost blows the good work that has been done before in the proceeding hour.

The fault could lie at many feet. Director Mike Nichols isn't exactly known for genre movies, and this movie does works best as a character builder (ie, the first half) and at this point, the film excels. However, he seems unsure as to how far to go with the horror aspect, and ultimately satisfies neither the genre savvy summer audience or the mature cinema goer (which this film so desperately wants to be in with) - the movie starts out as a steak, but ultimately leaves as a burger. Jim Harrison and Wesley Stricks' script starts out smart, sassy and funny but quickly descends into farce and mediocrity. Which is a shame as the production is well mounted, with an excellent autumn hued look. The score is great, too - obviously, created to give a grand, 1930s universal horror feel and Nicholson is superb in the lead role. Even though Pfeiffer and Spader aren't as effective in their respective roles, I fear that is more to do with a lacklustre script than their talents (as both are excellent in their own right. Spader is great in "Sex, Lies & Videotape", "Secretary" and "Crash"). All in all, a decent attempt that seems to have been held back by a large studio budget, unsure direction and an identity crisis as to who it wishes to speak to. Like most movies of today, it wants its have its cake and eat it by appealing to all demographics, but unlike something like "An American Werewolf in London" which mixes its blend of horror, comedy, romance and drama into a headier brew, "Wolf" only manages to produce a movie that is `nearly there'.

DVD presentation is sharp, with no extras. Only a trailer. The movie is recommended, but don't expect a wild ride. Just an easy-going and minor entry in the werewolf subgenre.

5 out of 5 stars Jack the big bad wolf has deffently marked his territory in Hollywood!.......2007-06-05

This movie is awesome, it's like a roller Coster ride from start to finish. I really liked how he looked as the new wolfman for a new up to date version. James Spader goes through some changes as well? That's the best part, I am not going to give away. This movie takes the whole werewolf legend to a new level. It also gives you a good reference to how we as individuals have to deal with in everyday life situations, dealing with work and relationships in our personal lives, and how some people can be very diseveing and somethings you thought you knew them but you were wrong, and when things were going right until an unexcpected change in your life changes everything. That's what Nicholson's character as a well mannered book editor named Will Randle. He has a good head on his shoulders untill after driving home one night from a business trip changes his whole life forever. That's all I am going to tell you for now. The rest is for you to watch for yourselves. This is a good thinking movie as well as a pychologic thriller. It's a good werewolf movie without so much blood but has a well deserved written story line. It's got it twist and turns. Trust me this movie is worth seeing over and over. Then you will be howling all night...

4 out of 5 stars JACK MAKES WOLF GREAT WHEN IT WOULD HAVE BEEN AN OTHERWISE ABYSMALLY AVERAGE MOVIE INTO.......2007-04-16

Wolf has a movie of the week quality to it. The characters are very one demensional and to say Jack's immense talents were woefully under used in WOLF is the kind of understatment to boggle the minds of sick and sane alike. That said Wolf is an enjoyable movie, with way too little werewolf action for my heart. The werewolf scenes were all too breif. The lighting was so bad in Wolf because, better lighting would have revealed the dime store special effects and prostetics used in the filming.

Jack makes this movie work because, he is convincing as a lycanthrope. There is something that creeps you out about Jack being a werewolf that he invests in the character just enough to make you buy in to the paper thin plot of WOLF! I won't lie. I enjoyed WOLF immensely which is why I gave it 4 stars. I know many of my Lycanthope loving purest's pan the movie for being so average and in some ways sub-par and I hear you brothers and sisters but. I have seen some far worse werewolf movies than this one. Wolves of Wall Streel leaps right to mind for one of the worst werewolf films.

WOLF is not bad. WOLF was so refreshing because it protrayed a werewolf as a force of good for once and that earned it four stars from my amazon.com den. Wolf keeps the Werewolf genre' alive and does so with more class than most these days. I added WOLF to my growing werewolf collection a long time ago and never regretted it for a moment.

Directors Chris Hegedus (The War Room) and Jehane Noujaim couldn't have imagined the drama that awaited when they began documenting the creation of the pioneering e-commerce site govWorks.com. For over a year they followed the company, the brainchild of childhood-friends-turned-business-partners software geek and doting single dad Tom Herman, and ambitious young business-school-grad-turned-company-CEO Kaleil Isaza Tuzman. During the rise of the Internet investment frenzy and the subsequent crash of the dot-economy, the cameras remain keyed into the human dynamic: the lifestyle compromises, the personal sacrifices, and the clash of philosophies and personalities that ultimately tear boyhood buddies Tom and Kaleil apart...almost. Startup.com's portrait of the cutthroat nature of American business culture and the choices one makes (or doesn't) to succeed poses the one question most documentaries ignore: Is it worth it? --Sean Axmaker

5 out of 5 stars Startup.com.......2007-07-25

Anyone with the faintest un-suppressed memory of the Internet boom should watch the cautionary "Startup.com," an intense look at the treacherous waters of American business start-ups. Chris Hegedus ("The War Room") and Jehane Noujaim ("Control Room") were lucky enough to capture the full dramatic arc of Tuzman and Herman's venture, from the height of the Internet frenzy to the dot-com bubble's big burst. "Start-up" demonstrates how the rules of cut-throat modern entrepreneurship can transform positive human ambition into nerve-shredding obsession.

4 out of 5 stars What price are we willing to pay for .......2007-04-10

As I write this review,I am two days removed from hearing of the tragic and senseless suicide of an acquaintance who had it all, risked it all, lost his family, fell into depression and substance abuse and hung himself.Why?.....his life WAS his startup and it came crashing down around him and he couldn't bear it.
STARTUP.COM is a timeless look at the rise and fall of businesses and the people who rise and fall with them. Some people who will view this film will only want to know one thing:How do I succeed in building a business and make money? Others will view this film and learn about the trmendous sacrifices to self and interpersonal relationships that comes from examining the failures of others driven by an intense desire or need to "succeed".This documentary examines both aspects of business-the technical and the personal. The two aspects are always competing. The lives of the "twentysomething"founders of gov.WORKS.com are examined in intimate detail as Kaleil and Tom are followed from the infancy stage of their internet organization, through it's quick rise to fame,(they were on every major mag cover and even had audience with President Clinton!!!)and it's crashing in 20 months.Loyalties and passions are questioned. This is a very realistic look at the down -and -dirty business world as portrayed in the .com rush of a few years back. What this film has to teach us is about the price that one pays in blood for what one thinks is necessary for "success".This film is a sobering look for anyone, any age who needs to possibly reexamine their priorities in business and in life.

5 out of 5 stars Great, observational documentary.......2006-10-07

One of my favorite documentaries, "Startup.com" follows two high school friends as they create an internet business together.

Besides catching history on film, the filmmakers document what happens when friendship enters the business realm.

3 out of 5 stars Anthropological Record of the Decline and Fall of the West.......2006-02-01

This will be as valuable to future anthroplogists after this civilisation has gone the way of all self-indulgent greed-obsessed cultures, as the murals of Pompeii's preening elite. The two main characters are equally obnoxious and equaly revealing of all that's wrong with this culture of money and ignorant selfishness. All the 'extras' floating around in the background who get churned in the delusional business fantasies of these two idiots are far more interesting, but we dont get to hear much about them. Enron wasnt a fluke, judging by this film.

1 out of 5 stars don't even bother!.......2005-10-21

Okay, I was excited to see this movie. I read a few non fiction books on the dot.com bust and thought I knew a thing or two, but when I watched this movie focus on petty relationships and nothing more, I found myself wondering what planet these film makers were from. I mean, WHO cares about these people's relationships?? NOT ANYONE WHO IS WATCHING THIS MOVIE! We care about why and how businesses succeed and fail. This movie sucked!

After a delightful opening, in which jungle boy Mowgli (voiced by Haley Joel Osment) recaps much of the original Jungle Book in a sprightly shadow puppet show, The Jungle Book 2 swiftly turns into a carbon copy of the splendidly swinging previous movie. After his old pal Baloo the bear (voiced by John Goodman) draws Mowgli away from the man-village, with all its work and rules, and back into the glorious indolence of the jungle, the movie repeats--in a less energetic form--an encounter with Kaa the snake, the cockney vultures, a musical number at the monkey's palace, the menace of Shere Khan the tiger, and even the song "The Bare Necessities." The only difference is that there's a girl named Shanti along for the ride; sadly, her character is so bland that it doesn't do much to justify the movie's existence. --Bret Fetzer

Description

From Disney's wildly popular THE JUNGLE BOOK comes a thrilling, all-new animated feature film. The jungle is jumping again as Mowgli, Baloo, Bagheera, and the rest of your favorite characters return in the fun-filled musical adventure THE JUNGLE BOOK 2. "It's a work of such charm and imagination it should enchant children of all ages" (Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles Times). Mowgli (Haley Joel Osment) has been living in the village among the humans. His new life includes his little stepbrother, Ranjan, and his best friend, Shanti, but the man-cub still has that jungle rhythm in his heart, and he misses his old buddy Baloo (John Goodman). When Mowgli wanders back into the wild for some swingin' fun, he soon finds Baloo isn't the only one waiting for him -- the man-eating tiger Shere Khan is lurking in the shadows and planning his revenge. If he is to defeat his nemesis, Mowgli will need the help of both his old friends and his new family. With fresh new renditions of "Bare Necessities" and "I Wanna Be Like You," and a host of original toe-tappin' tunes paired with classic Disney animation, THE JUNGLE BOOK 2 is sure to delight the entire family.

1 out of 5 stars Movies like this make you ask, WAS THIS SEQUEL REALLY NECCESSARY.......2006-04-01

The original Jungle Book was inventive, whitty, uplifting and charming. The characters had depth and a beauty that in its time was unique and wonderful. The original Disney Jungle Book story was told with great feeling that was a source of fun and inspiration to me growing up as an autistic child. I can honestly say the original Disney Jungle Book movie was the only movie I loved that also touched my heart.

Jungle Book 2 is is just a very badly executed attempt at recreating the awesomeness of the The original Disney Jungle Book. Jungle Book 2 fails in all attempts to recreate any of the magic of the original Disney Jungle Book. Jungle Book 2 is endlessly bland overall filled with nothing at all to justify wasting a moment of your life watching. You will be better and more deeply entertained for hours watching newly poured cement dry compared to watching a moment of Jungle Book 2. Don't Waste your time wacthing this garbage it is not worth anyones time or money. It gets one star only because the amazon system does not allow me to post zero stars or better still stars in negative numbers.

5 out of 5 stars Execellent Jungle Movie.......2006-01-26

I watched Jungle Book 2 movie at the behest of my two young daughters aged 5 and 9. What a thrill. I enjoyed the excellent sound tracks particularly "Jungle Rhythm". The special effects were excellent and the dancing by all creatures great and small was rhythmic and great to watch.

The kids love the movie and they watch it often. This is good entertainment for the kids (and the young at heart)that I recommend to any parent.

Amazon.com essential video

In the tradition of such obsessively driven directors as Erich von Stroheim and Werner Herzog, Francis Ford Coppola approached the production of Apocalypse Now as if it were his own epic mission into the heart of darkness. On location in the storm-ravaged Philippines, he quite literally went mad as the project threatened to devour him in a vortex of creative despair, but from this insanity came one of the greatest films ever made. It began as a John Milius screenplay, transposing Joseph Conrad's classic story "Heart of Darkness" into the horrors of the Vietnam War, following a battle-weary Captain Willard (Martin Sheen) on a secret upriver mission to find and execute the renegade Colonel Kurtz (Marlon Brando), who has reverted to a state of murderous and mystical insanity. The journey is fraught with danger involving wartime action on epic and intimate scales. One measure of the film's awesome visceral impact is the number of sequences, images, and lines of dialogue that have literally burned themselves into our cinematic consciousness, from the Wagnerian strike of helicopter gunships on a Vietnamese village to the brutal murder of stowaways on a peasant sampan and the unflinching fearlessness of the surfing warrior Lieutenant Colonel Kilgore (Robert Duvall), who speaks lovingly of "the smell of napalm in the morning." Like Herzog's Aguirre: The Wrath of God, this film is the product of genius cast into a pit of hell and emerging, phoenix-like, in triumph. Coppola's obsession (effectively detailed in the riveting documentary Hearts of Darkness, directed by Coppola's wife, Eleanor) informs every scene and every frame, and the result is a film for the ages. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars A total departure from reality.......2007-07-17

It is interesting to read the numerous positive reviews of Apocalypse Now, and certainly it will be to see reactions to this Review. As a Vietnam veteran who spent almost seven years in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, it's difficult to be generous about the views of Martin Sheen, for example, who stated emphatically that this is "...the best Vietnam War film ever." Hardly! If you evaluate the cinematic qualities of the film - for film's sake only, yes, it is a well-made film. Other than that, and in terms of truth and realism, "surrealistic" about covers it. In terms of reality and realism, even "The Siege of Firebase Gloria" - despite some terrible acting - was much better.

The film presents scenarios that are not only surrealistic, they are virtually impossible, such as Kurtz' empire-building situation "up the river." As a former Green Beret, I am a little bothered by such portrayals, but I also realize that "opinions differ." This film is no better than a "1" on the scale of realism.

5 out of 5 stars The kind of charismatic film making that only Coppola can provide.......2007-06-15

In terms of visual impact and scenes that live long in the mind, no war movie can really surpass Francis Ford Coppola's 'Apocalypse Now'. War can be a difficult business for film makers to deal with. There is the possibility of becoming bogged down in poignant, overly sentimental, personal stories among the soldiers, or reveling in the gruesome bodily disfigurement of the battle scenes. 'Apocalypse Now' skillfully sidesteps both of these potential pitfalls to bring a war movie of true originality.

'Apocalypse Now' is infused with a black humour that adds an extra dimension. In a spirit akin to Stanley Kubrick's 'Full Metal Jacket', the battlefield seems like a playground to some of the GIs, blending off the cuff jokes with brutal killings in a bizarre mix.

Martin Sheen's portrayal of Captain Willard is a compelling one. An experienced marine, who appears intimidated by his mission, but pushed forward by honour and his desire to do his duty. This performance, however, is surpassed by the unforgettable imprint that Marlon Brando leaves on the film. His intense, brooding acting style is an exact match for the persona of the renegade Colonel Kurtz. His famous half-light scene inside his temple is possibly unsurpassed by any other in film in terms of intensity and impact.

'Apocalypse Now' is regarded by many as the greatest war movie ever made. I feel that most people who take the time to enjoy it will come to the same conclusion.

4 out of 5 stars Homer without the virtues.......2007-05-04

Although Joseph Conrad's HEART OF DARKNESS is normally cited as the premier literary inspiration for this landmark Francis Ford Coppola film, the voyage up the river is Homeric in its pacing, its cast of characters, and its staging. It is brilliant filming that takes one quickly past his expectation of seeing a 'war movie' and into the psychedelic mind of Coppola. Astonishingly, this film was released just four years after the last American troops left Vietnam, when the wounds were more than open. They were still bleeding.

APOCALYPSE NOW is a psychodrama as much as it is anything else. The men on the boat that winds its way toward Horror are as much battling to maintain their own sanity as they are fighting anything recognizable as Charlie, an organized opposition.

It is the Americans who come off looking most insane, so the relief that comes from seeing Martin Sheen's Captain Willard get back in the boat and head towards civilization is almost purely tribal. He's like us; ergo, he needs to go home.

But Horror is before him as well as left behind in Apocalypse Now, the weird paradise that is hell and must be undone for larger reasons than the 'unsound practices' alleged by those who commissioned Captain Willard's Odyssey.

I waited many years to see this film. It was simply never the moment.

Now, fresh from a much-postponed first viewing, I consider it a fixed reference point for American cinematography *and* for America's long coming to terms with a war that in the end made no sense, even to those sectors of political leadership that had the most invested in it.

The insights into wartime reality that here and there come under the camera's view are a bonus, but they are not this film's focus. It is instead a psychodrama that might possibly have staged its Homeric tale on almost *any* historical stage that was raw enough to bring insanity close to the surface. 'The War', as many of us refer non-adjectivally to the Vietnam conflict, serves that purpose well. But this Homeric tale might have been scened elsewhere.

It it still arguable that America's involvement there made sense. APOCALYPSE now--like HEART OF DARKNESS--is not about that. It's about what's in a man's heart when civilization's thin veneer momentarily rubs away. That, says Coppola with good lineage ancient and modern, is just one thing. Horror.

5 out of 5 stars Memorable thril ride.......2007-05-01

Apocalypse now is a good look at the Vietnam war. Characters like Lance Willard Kurtz and Kilgore are memorable. The trip up river is a rollercoaster of emotions. Playing ride of the valkryes during the attack on the village was one of the best uses of classical music since 2001. The dialouge between Kurtz and Willard is the best Martin Sheen and Marlon Brando ever did. This movie is a thriller i recomand it.

5 out of 5 stars The horror ... the horror ..........2006-08-25

To call Francis Ford Coppola's APOCALYPSE NOW one of the greatest films ever made is a major understatement. It's filmmaking perfection - brilliant, powerful, and beautiful. From the chilling opening - helicopters flying through the Vietnamese jungle, setting it aflame, while The Doors' "The End" plays - to the now-classic closing ("The horror ... the horror ..."), it's an unforgettable journey into the darkest reaches of the human heart. It's unquestionably the greatest and most horrifying film made about the Vietnam War; it may be the best war movie ever. Some could even argue that APOCALYPSE NOW is the greatest film of all time.

The plot is ingenious. During the seemingly endless Vietnam War, Captain Willard (Martin Sheen), a former CIA agent, is given a voluntary mission; as he's been searching for work, he gladly accepts. His mission: float up the Nung River in a Navy boat and terminate (with extreme prejudice) Colonel Walter E. Kurtz (Marlon Brando), a once-brilliant man who has gone insane and set himself up as a God and the leader of a Vietnamese tribe. As Willard sails further and further up the river, his surroundings and the violence become more and more terrible until he finally reaches the heart of darkness.

Though APOCALYPSE NOW was, in fact, loosely based on Joseph Conrad's novel HEART OF DARKNESS, it is truly Francis Ford Coppola's movie. The story behind the film is legendary; it was turned into an equally-legendary documentary entitled HEARTS OF DARKNESS: A FILMMAKER'S APOCALYPSE. From the start the film was plagued by production problems, to the point where Coppola threatened to commit suicide six or seven times. Marlon Brando showed up on the set without having read Conrad's HEART OF DARKNESS or the Coppola/John Milius screenplay, demanding a large sum of money, and severely overweight. Filming ran for an incredible 16 months, and editing lasted for roughly two years. Paramount Pictures nicknamed the film "Apocalypse When?". Audiences, critics, studios, and Coppola himself thought that the film would wind up as a disaster, a horrible film that would signal the end of everyone involved. Needless to say, they were horribly wrong.

The film is a masterpiece. More than a film, it's a reflection on humanity and the evil within. Never has the Vietnam War looked so horrifyingly inhumane. Coppola really makes the point that Vietnam was not so much a war as it was a massacre. The most terrifying scene of all involves the slaying of a group of innocent Vietnamese fishermen. Soldier Chef (Frederic Forrest) reluctantly searches the boat for any weapons; the tension is built up while Chef searches as his commander shouts at him and he shouts back furiously. A Vietnamese woman suddenly runs towards him shouting, and a young American soldier (14-year-old Laurence Fishburne) guns down not only her, but every one else on the boat. As it turns out, the woman was running for her dog. All those innocent human beings were murdered because the woman wanted to protect her puppy. And it gets worse - Chef points out that the woman is still alive. As he begins hauling her on the ship, Willard walks over and shoots her in the heart. "I told you not to stop the damn ship," he says.

As far as filmmaking goes, APOCALYPSE NOW is perfection. There's excellent acting from all involved; Robert Duvall is especially great as an eccentric commander who likes to surf and, in one of the most memorable scenes in cinema history, blasts Wagner's "The Ride of the Valkyries" while attacking enemy villages. A skinny, bespectacled Harrison Ford has a brief appearance, and Dennis Hopper - in another wonderful role, this time as a photojournalist - pops up toward the end. The score is fittingly eerie and mechanical, a synthesized horror composed by Coppola and his father, Carmine Coppola. Vittorio Storaro's cinematography is nothing short of spectacular. APOCALYPSE NOW also features what may be the greatest lighting in film history, particularly toward the end of the film.

Still, despite all this cinematic greatness, APOCALYPSE NOW is more an experience than a film. It's a chilling, brilliant voyage from start to finish. "Never get off the boat," a character states at one point in the film. For we, the audience, APOCALYPSE NOW is the boat, and once we do take the inevitable step off, we will never be the same.

Description

Professor Davidson and his lovely daughter Diana search Africa for the Lost City of Zoloz. Legend pegs it to be the source of a vast hidden treasure. Their search is hindered by a local crook, Singapore Smith, who wants the treasure for himself. It is further complicated by Dr. Bremmer, an international criminal, who plans to destroy the peace with the local native tribes and build a secret air base at Zoloz. Fortunately, the Phantom, who is also Diana's fiancé, is more than a match for the two villains. The Phantom, with his superhuman strength, manages to outwit each enemy move, escaping from one death trap after an other: avalanches, poison gas, flaming pyres, and explosions fail to shake his fearless spirit. With the help of his four-footed pal Devil, he finally overpowers all the enemy factions, and brings peace to the jungle once again. 5 out of 5 stars Top-notch serial.......2007-08-17

I'd read that the director of the Captain Marvel serial thought Tom Tyler was a terrible actor (which is why he said a total of about 12 words the whole time), but this proves him wrong. He's a very good phantom and this is a good ride.

There are offensive stereotypes, so get ready for the occasional cringe and this is not the Royal Academy in terms of acting or writing, but if you shut down your critical brain for a while, you'll probably find yourself drawn in--a little like quicksand.

5 out of 5 stars Five Star Phantom.......2007-02-18

I'm a big Phantom fan so I may be biased but I thought this was great stuff. This took me back to my childhood. I saw the serial when I was a kid in the fifties and it's still great over 50 years later. They could have made his costume a bit better but apart from that a great adventure. My teenage kids loved this too, which is saying something.

5 out of 5 stars Bringing back childhood memories.......2007-01-04

Really enjoyed this serial. I'm 56, and can still remember going to the Pitt theatre on saturday mornings to catch the serials. Watching the Phantom brings back a time before America lost it's commom sense and the phrase "politically correct" wasn't heard of.

4 out of 5 stars the phantom.......2006-11-07

MOVIE WAS MADE FROM A GOOD COPY.PICTURE WAS VERY CLEAR AND CLEAN.THE STORY FOLLOWS THE ORIGINAL PREMISE VERY CLOSELY.ALL IN ALL IT'S A FUN SERIAL TO WATCH.

3 out of 5 stars Fast-paced and watchable.......2006-08-08

I grew up reading Phantom cartoons. This video series shows a different Phantom. First, there is no horse named Hero. Phantom of this video is not as strong as in the cartoon. However, these are not major issues for me.

I had a huge problem with the Professor. He does not care about his fellow men, only interested in his pursuit of the Zoloz ruins. I was truly disgusted to hear him say that the wealth of the Zoloz tribes belongs to his sponsor University! What nonsense! Even Phantom was no better. He realized that the jewels in his skull cave are the treasures of the Zoloz, but did not consider returning them to the tribes! In my dictionary, this is thievery.

4 out of 5 stars More Fun than a Barrel of Horned-up Monkeys.......2007-09-02

My review title somewhat summarizes the mentality of this film...note that I did enjoy "The Rundown" (halfway through I recalled having already seen it) and I could watch it again in the future. There's a lot of action and some really stunning jungle backdrops along with some incredible mountainous vistas...a fun movie for the entire [13yr+] family!

The HD transfer looks excellent and the DD+ 5.1 audio "rocks"!

I recommend "The Rundown" to anyone who would enjoy a little bit of toilet humor mixed in with some priceless artifact seeking adventure and a whole lot of explosions. Beck (The Rock) doesn't like guns, though...well you'll just have to see how that turns out.

Great fun for almost anyone! Perhaps not so much for Mom...but you never know.

5 out of 5 stars HD DVD version, Funny.......2007-08-20

Got this movie as one of free movies when i bought my HD DVD. It is very funny full of explosions, good sound, funny plot. Worth the pick for the five free movies.

5 out of 5 stars The first 10 minutes rock!.......2007-05-07

This is one of my all-time fav's but you have the credits wrong. Arnold S. is NOT in this movie. And the Rock is not even mentioned.

4 out of 5 stars Fun action movie but lacking trully hd picture..........2006-11-15

Watching this movie hasn't really changed since the DVD days. The story is exciting and the action is constantly flowing. That is why this movie gets four stars from me.

What keeps this movie from getting five stars is the grainy picture. I have a 1080p and watching other hd movies looked good. This movie appeared as they did very little to enhance the quality of picture. The picture was grainy and really didn't appear any better than my dvd version. You may want to invest in some other movie with a better quality picture unless you haven't viewed it before.

3 out of 5 stars color in excess.......2006-08-28

A good moment of action for a rainy day with humor sometimes. This is a pleaseant movie at the end.
The HD Dvd transfer is average with heavy saturation in colors and too sharp contrast.
