4 out of 5 stars Childhood Memories.......2006-03-20

I enjoyed watching this DVD - it brought back memories of watching the "House Party" TV show with my mom back in the 60's - probably on school vacation days. I don't really remember what the rest of the "House Party" show was about but the 'Kids Say the Darnest Things' segment was what I tuned in for. This DVD is funny although somewhat repetitious but even my teenager got a kick out of the DVD. Seeing the prizes the kids received was interesting too - a trip down memory lane.

3 out of 5 stars Not the B&W show, but segments from 1968's HOUSE PARTY........2006-02-11

The year is 1968, the show is ART LINKLETTER'S HOUSE PARTY, and 'housewives' everywhere tuned in every afternoon to watch their favorite segment of that show called "Kids Say The Darndest Things".

If the above introduction to this review bothers your political correctness you may have some problems with this dated show. Girls are given seperate toys from the boys and have different expectations. Minorities are limited to a few Asian kids, Art & the audience laugh at one boy's bowl-haircut "Your Mom cuts your hair!". You will cringe when two seperate clips have Art asking the kids "Who would you rather get spanked by?", one child replies "My grandmother, because by Dad & Mon use a belt". That does bring an 'oh-boy' on Art's face but he moves on.

I did find the first 30 minutes very amusing, but then the remaining 90 minutes became routine with some bright moments. I found myself working on projects while listening to the show as a distraction.

I seem to remember better B&W clips from Art's earlier shows on other retrospective programs. Maybe Art is saving those for other volumes (a sticker indicates this is volume 1), but I feel no urge to see more. This is more than enough.

One un-expected high spot is the close-ups of the 1968 toys given as prizes! A two foot Mary Poppin's Doll for the girls would bring a good price on eBay today. The other toys brought back memories for me.

This best-of DVD is formatted as one 2 hour clip show with a new introduction by Art. There are some chapters to find the clips.
This show is in color, the old tapes are still in fairly good shape although the picture is soft.

I do wonder, now, what the entire "House Party" show was like as I only remember this segment.

4 out of 5 stars Art is still the best!.......2005-11-30

After playing this entire dvd, I must say I was charmed by Art, and his little talkers as well. Harking back to a simpler, more cordial time on Television, I highly recommend this example of what TV should strive to be: fun, yet mannerly, and containing a shining example of what a host SHOULD be on a talk forum--a listener, and not trying to take everything and make a one-line joke out of it, basically to be a good listener with a minimal ego. YOU HEAR THAT DAVID, JAY, CONAN, etc??? You will thoroughly enjoy this step-back with a fantastic gentleman host-Art Linkletter. I certainly hope they will produce many more of these, and I shall order them all too.

Tom Hanks's debut as a writer and director is a lively, affectionate account of the shooting-star career of a forgotten (fictional) '60s pop-rock band called The Wonders--as in "one-hit wonders." Hanks plays the manager of the group, which includes drummer Guy "Sticks" Patterson (Tom Everett Scott) who works the floor at his parents' appliance store in Erie, Pennsylvania; Jimmy (Johnathon Schaech), the talented and temperamental lead singer and songwriter; Lenny (Steve Zahn), the goofy guitarist; and Ethan Embry as a geeky little fellow identified in the cast list only as "The Bass Player." The movie traces their meteoric rise and fall, from cutting their first record, to going on tour with a Phil Spector/Motown-type revue, to the internal tensions that lead to the band's disintegration, which comes when they fail to follow up their smash hit single, "That Thing You Do!" And that song, by the way, is so catchy it would definitely have been a hit in 1964--and deserves to be one today. This delightful movie would make a great double-bill with Allison Anders's wonderful Grace of My Heart. --Jim Emerson

5 out of 5 stars Directors Cut vs Teatrical Cut.......2007-09-13

WE loved the movie That Thing You Do. We thought it was clever and took us back to the bands that were popular when we were just kids. We bought the Director's Cut because we're always looking for that extra something. But it was not necessary in this case. The original Theater Cut hit the spot and no extra or deleted scenes were necessary.

5 out of 5 stars unusual extended cut.......2007-08-09

I lived on Orange, California during the making of this movie and during the time the movie represents. I bought it hoping for a commentary track that would mention that many of the street scenes were filmed in Orange, including Watson's Drug Store and the Army-Navy Store being real places there. Unfortunately, there are no commentary tracks and none of the additional features mention that fact.

But the extended cut version of the movie, which gives you a lot more character development, particularly of Guy Patterson, makes this purchase well worthwhile.

5 out of 5 stars A Mini-Masterpiece.......2007-08-06

Last week, I saw "That Thing You Do!" on one of the cable movie channels. I had not seen it for a while and had a couple of hours staring me down, so I sat back and watched it. The film itself is a nice piece of work by Mr. Hanks. He did himself proud. And that song! What a catchy, get-under-your-skin-in-your-brain pop tune!

Then, two days later, I was in Best Buy (humming That Thing You Do, by the way) and this new edition DVD appears before me unexpectedly, on sale. Without thinking, I bought it, took it home and I have watched it three times since (the theatrical release, once and the extended version, twice) and I will watch many times more.

This new release of That Thing You Do! underscores why "The Director's Cut" genre in DVD releases has become so invaluable to film aficionados like myself.

The theatrical version is priceless (still), but the "Director's Cut" is incredible and a major revelation. So many gaps in the plot have been filled in (gaps that I wasn't even aware of, so well put-together was the original version). This newer version has made the film a mini-masterpiece.

As in the original, the cast is excellent, the plot is believable and charming, the performances are funny, vibrant, true-to-life, and in this version, quite poignant.

Charlize Theron's character, Tina, and her relationship with Guy, in particular, suddenly become crucial elements to the early plot development (she is a minor character in the original version). Her character is fleshed-out, and she has one HYSTERICAL scene (in the dentist's chair) that caught me so off-guard with its humour, that I nearly choked to death with laughter!!

Even Tom Hanks character as the group's manager, Mr. White, becomes more developed and there is an interesting scene and dialogue when the group is in Los Angeles at "the same hotel Lucy and Ricky stayed at" between Guy (who is gently drunk), Mr. White and a guy named Lloyd.

Even The Bass Player (the Wonder's bass player who is never given a name), played by the adorable Ethan Embry, has a scene or two not in the original film that adds to the sweetness of his character (as well as some sly sexiness).

Liv Tyler's role as Jimmy's girlfriend, Faye, becomes even more developed and she is such a marvelous actress in this film. She really is the heart and soul of the movie, and the newer version only adds to her wonderful mystique in this film.

And of course, Steve Zahn as Lenny, is still as funny as ever and is the one band member who has no fear to "push the envelope" and rider the roller-coaster of success to wherever it takes them.

I recommend this new version of "That Thing You Do!" whole-heartedly. Whether it is the original or the extended-cut, it is a lively, spirited, upbeat and thoroughly delightful viewing experience.

And, I am STILL humming "That Thing You Do!"

5 out of 5 stars That Thing You Do.......2007-07-20

Delivery of product was in a timely manner,in fact,I acutally received it earlier than I expected. The movie was excellent. My entire family enjoyed it. Of course this is not unusual with any Tom Hanks movie. I have not viewed any of Tom Hanks movies that were not SUPBERB !!!

4 out of 5 stars Extended cut disappointing.......2007-07-15

I've loved 'That Thing You Do' for years on VHS. When I saw the DVD at a local bookstore, I started dropping hints to my wife for my birthday. Lovely to hear the sounds in surround and the music is well mixed. However, the extended cut added a whole lot of unnecessary innuendo and it changed the ending slightly. I'll enjoy watching the original theatrical cut over and over, I'm sure

1 out of 5 stars Don't bother.......2006-09-19

Sorry I can't recommend this one. I bought it USED (thankfully) based on all the nice/good reviews here. I don't think we watched the same film.

If you don't like movies where the characters talk to the viewer, you won't like this one.

5 out of 5 stars Smartly funny.......2006-04-06

I don't write reviews, and I don't purhase movies but I'm doing both for this one.
What a great movie. In a time when most humor has really stupid sophomoric humor, this movie is smart, fast, clever and unexpectedly expected. Enough said. Rent or buy this movie. Watch it and prepare yourself to watch it again. Get a kleenex because you'll laugh so hard you'll cry.

5 out of 5 stars Yes, Jenny McCarthy Can Act.......2005-11-14

"Crazy Little Thing" is an intelligent comedy about relationships. I'm surprised its not more popular, but that's probably due to it's "R" rating. Whitney (Jenny McCarthy) keeps running into Jimmy (Chris Eigeman) during the movie and they think they despise each other. Whitney has a crazy neighbor Dee (Drea de Matteo) who helps her figure how to meet men. Jimmy has a friend who realizes his sexual preference isn't female and he goes through some major changes, while his other friend has a relationship with a girl in High School which is funny and sad at the same time. Rent or buy it if you haven't seen it, because you probably won't be disappointed if you like this type of humor.

5 out of 5 stars Right up there with Office Space.......2004-03-01

I had very low expectations going into this movie, as it had Jenny McCarthy in it, but it was a nice surprise. What a great date move! Rented it on a friends recommendation and bought it the next day. It is a must for your movie collection. Consider Crazy Little Things as the romantic comedy version of Office Space.

5 out of 5 stars Funniest movie I've seen in a long time..........2004-01-03

I had never heard of this movie, but it was recommended by friends.

It is very funny story about two people that seem to keep running into each other. It's not a quote "chick flick" but it will more than keep her happy and it is funny enough to make you cry with laughter.

It's the same type comedy as Office Space.

4 out of 5 stars The Psychology of Pederasty.......2006-08-13

In one word, this movie is about the effect, especially the psychosexual effects, of pederasty. In this case, it is incestuous pederasty. [Check one of the on-line dictionaries if you are unfamiliar with this word.] When the father tried to cover up his past, all sorts of things backfire on him and, even worse, for his son.

This is a very psychological movie, if you understand it. It must have been written by a victim, now grown, to have such a strong impact.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite films of all time. ("John Q" Spoiler at the end of this review)........2006-05-29

I first rented this movie years ago and was impressed. This film pulls back the stops, it has the great music score, excellent acting, a deep, gritty story, and a slam dunk ending. I love film and I may be going out on a limb, but of the 300 + DVDs I own, this is probably my favorite. The entire film keeps you interested, but that ending, some would say predictable, but I was not expecting this. I was expecting a typical hollywood ending that would take a little away from the raw story, but that did not happen. I was pleasantly surprised. I would be hard pressed to find a better ending of any movie. This film should be seen by a large audience. You will not find a hollywood film today that has the b*lls to make an ending like this. Take for example John Q a pretty good film, but the ending was highly dissapointing. The film John Q was trying to make a point: health care is too damn expensive and should be affordable to everyone. But in the end they chickened out. If you really want to make that point, John Q would have really blown his brains out and his son would have died, because that in reality is probably what would have happened. But that would be too much of a downer for the masses, they don't want reality, they want happy feel good endings, and sometimes so do I. But if you want to see a movie that does not have a happy ending, but a just ending, watch Sweet Thing.

3 out of 5 stars Chilling........2001-12-26

A low-budget film with relatively high production values, "Sweet Thing" is a fine first feature, loaded with flaws. The story follows a young artist whose bizarre, controversial artwork raises questions of the boy's sexuality--further upsetting his father's failing political career. The music and imagery of the film are supurb and effictively chilling and creepy, even if the film's twists are predictable and unsatisfying. On a short, throw-away featurette, the director describes the film as a movie he'd want to see, which is understanable. It's a film I'd want to see--melodramatic, creepy, raw, without a real happy ending. And while most of the elements of the film kept me interested throughout, the flaws were unmistakable. I look forward to seeing future releases of this filmmaker.

3 out of 5 stars Can U Hear Me Now --- Good.......2005-06-04

While I must be honest & admit that I did not watch this film in its full entirety. I can tell you about the parts I did see. There are a lot of inner stories and you must remember who is who or you'll get lost & lose interest. The pace begins sluggish but does picks up. Dialogue was pleasantly well written; ensemble cast seemed to work well together. Honorable mention for actress, Mitch Roberson, (a star is on the rise) -- she has flavor & passion of the likes of Vanessa L. Williams & Alfre Woodward. Writer `Alix Jean-Francious' founder of Black Phoenix Rising Productions has true heart and I commend him for following his passion. Kudos to: Director David Wright who came into the project after another director left. He did a very fine job with what he was given. Though, it has been over a year since I've seen this film, the title & film score are the only things that stick out in my mind. Much success: to all who participated on the project.
Stay Driven & to quote the Compton Rapper,"Game"... Dream!

4 out of 5 stars A Sweet little Artsy Flick.......2005-04-08

Love's Sweet Thing is an unexpected little artsy comedy that has a few surprises. At first the story starts out kind of all over the place and is a little hard to follow the myriad of characters, but midway through it really picks up and the intensity of the director shines bright. I truly enjoyed this film. If you are looking for a nice little rainy day flick to watch at home, i'd suggest this.
