Family dysfunction. Treachery. Betrayal. Coarse profanity. Brutal violence. Graphic (and sometimes brutal) sex. No, it's not The Sopranos, it's Rome, HBO's madly ambitious series that bloodily splatters the glory of Rome just as savagely as Monty Python and the Holy Grail soiled the good name of Camelot (but with far fewer laughs; very few funny things happen on the way to this forum). Set in 52 B.C. (Before Cable), Rome charts the dramatic shifts in the balance of power between former friends Pompey Magnus (Kenneth Cranham), leader of the Senate, and Julius Caesar (Ciaran Hinds), whose imminent return after eight years to Rome after conquering the Gauls, has the ruling class up in arms. At the heart of Rome is the odd couple friendship between two soldiers who fortuitously become heroes of the people. Lucius Vorenus (Kevin McKidd) is married, honorable, and steadfast. Titus Pullo (Ray Stevenson) is an amoral rogue whose philosophy is best summed up, "I kill my enemies, take their gold, and enjoy their women." Among Rome's most compelling subplots is Lucius's strained relationship with his wife, Niobe (Indira Varma), who is surprised to see her husband alive (but not as surprised as he is to find her upon his homecoming with a newborn baby in her arms!) Any viewer befuddlement over Rome's intrigues and machinations, and determining who is hero and who is foe, disappears the minute Golden Globe-nominee Polly Walker appears as Atia, Caesar's formidable niece and a villainess for the ages. In the first hour alone, she offers her already married daughter as a bride to the recently widowed Pompey. One eagerly awaits to see what (or who) she'll do next as much as we anticipate her comeuppance in the final episode.

Rome is a painstakingly mounted production that earned eight well-deserved Emmy nominations in such categories as costumes, set design, and art direction. Michael Apted (Coal Miner's Daughter) was honored with a Director's Guild Award for the first episode, "The Stolen Eagle." But artistic considerations aside, instantly addicted viewers will agree with Atia, who notes at one point, "I adore the secrecy, the intrigue. It's most thrilling." --Donald Liebenson

Description

(HBO Dramatic Series) Four hundred years after the founding of the Republic, Rome is the wealthiest city in the world, a cosmopolitan metropolis of one million people; epicenter of a sprawling empire. The Republic was founded on principles of shared power and fierce personal competition, never allowing one man to seize absolute control. But now, those foundations are crumbling, eaten away by corruption and excess. After eight years of war, two soldiers, Lucius Vorenus and Titus Pullo unwittingly become entwined in the historical events of ancient Rome. A serialized drama of love and betrayal, masters and slaves, husbands and wives, ROME chronicles a turbulent era that saw the death of the republic and the birth of an empire.

3 out of 5 stars Good and Bad...........2007-09-16

It's nice that another attempt to portray Rome has been engaged, yet as always, distortions abound. The problem is that most people have come to know the Roman Empire through Hollywood and their fictitiously colored camera lenses. As another reviewer here, Mark Bennett, rightfully points out, Rome was by far the most civilized entity in the ancient world. The Barbarians were the ones that lived in animal skinned tents, raped, and pillaged both people and anything we humans call culture. Yes, Rome had violence, lust and greed, yet let us all not forget that America, which is likewise the greatest nation of its era, also is plagued with violence, lust and greed. Both regimes are a two-sided coin, yet Hollywood loves to salivate over the dark side of any coin.

As some reviewers here attest, they focus on and walk away with believing that Rome was just a souless regime hellbent on lustful sex and selfish greed. If someone only looked at teh smut cable channels on TV today they too would walk away thinking that America stood only for debased lust and greed. Hencforth, I only wish "real" historians would preside over these sets to inject more factual details and more of the other side of the coin, namely Rome's magnificence. That would have given people a fair and just perspective on this most important civilization, the one that laid the foundation for Western Civilization, as Roman Laws, art, architecture, engineering, city planning, governance, neworking, trade, religious tolerance and so many other deep and far-reaching gifts actually shaped our world today.

5 out of 5 stars ROME the First Season.......2007-09-16

This was one of the best mini series that I have seen.
You become part of the series as it moves from DVD to DVD with a lot of unexpected surprises. Recommend both the first and second season of ROME to all. It is just too bad there weren't more series of ROME coming out.

5 out of 5 stars Rome - If you like historical series, this is for you!.......2007-09-15

A great glimpse into the Roman Empire. A lot of nudity, sex, and violence, but, very entertaining and quite a good mini-series. If you like historical storylines, this one is for you!

5 out of 5 stars This is an enthralling series!.......2007-09-15

When I watched the first dvd of Rome, I was so-so about it. All the rape and violence almost turned me off of the show. Since I am a fan of historical movies and Roman empire in particular I wanted to enjoy the show.
I'm, glad I gave it a second chance. This show sucked me in and Titus Pullo became my favorite character. The most touching scene was when he fought in the ring and Vorenus came to his rescue. That made me tear up. His relationship with Eriene is touching also. I haven't watched the second season yet but at the end of the first they hold hands. It was sweet.
With all the costumes, music, action, romance and sub-plots this is a show I highly recommend watching. It has become one of my favorite shows in a short period of time. This is well worth it.

4 out of 5 stars Rome, season 1.......2007-09-13

One cannot understand the depth of history from reading history books. This series clearly shows the reality of the life and times of this Romand period. It is eye opening. I wish less time was spent on the sexuality of the times, however.

Amazon.com essential video

There is only one word that comes close to accurately describing the enchanting Mary Poppins, and that term was coined by the movie itself: supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! Even at 2 hours and 20 minutes, Disney's pioneering mixture of live action and animation (based on the books by P.L. Travers) still holds kids spellbound. Julie Andrews won an Oscar as the world's most magically idealized nanny ("practically perfect in every way," and complete with lighter-than-air umbrella), and Dick Van Dyke is her clownishly charming beau, Bert the chimney sweep. The songs are also terrific, ranging from bright and cheery ("A Spoonful of Sugar") to dark and cheery (the Oscar-winning "Chim Chim Cher-ee") to touchingly melancholy ("Feed the Birds"). Many consider Mary Poppins to be the crowning achievement of Walt Disney's career--and it was the only one of his features to be nominated for a best picture Academy Award until Beauty and the Beast in 1991. --Jim Emerson

I needed this movie asap for a friend and her children before they moved. It arrived when you said it would. The 40th anniv edition is wonderful--according to my friend!

5 out of 5 stars every one should own this classic.......2007-07-31

Awesome buy it today. You can't go wrong. It is more suited for 8 plus year olds. Enjoy the music is awesome and there is still taught manners and respect which is hard to find these days in children's viedoes.

5 out of 5 stars Poppins Magic.......2007-07-22

Delivery was super fast. I think I had the DVD within 3 days of e-mailing the order. It will be a film that we will share with our grandchildren.

5 out of 5 stars Its Disneys best...and it takes you to Disneyland everytime you watch it..........2007-07-19

This movie is also a classic great for the entire family. It can change an Adult into a kid and make a kid into a great Adult. It places values on family that lack in the upbringing in moral fiber these days and teaches values that a nanny rarely teaches our current children of today with the exception of hola due to parents working there children's lives away in pursuit of money and Capitalism. So please sit down with your own family and cherish feeding the birds or going to fly a kite or spending time with them before time spends you.

5 out of 5 stars Mary Poppins Anniversary DVD.......2007-07-13

Excellent quality. I also own a video tape of this movie and the clarity of the DVD is remarkable in comparison. Special features are fun too. I ordered it because my granddaughter loves this movie so much she has practically worn out the tape. It is a fun movie and I am enjoying it again as much as I did when my daughter was young.

Worry not, Disney fans--this special edition DVD of the beloved Cinderella won't turn into a pumpkin at the strike of midnight. One of the most enduring animated films of all time, the Disney-fied adaptation of the gory Brothers Grimm fairy tale became a classic in its own right, thanks to some memorable tunes (including "A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes," "Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo," and the title song) and some endearingly cute comic relief.

The famous slipper (click for larger image)
We all know the story--the wicked stepmother and stepsisters simply won't have it, this uppity Cinderella thinking she's going to a ball designed to find the handsome prince an appropriate sweetheart, but perseverance, animal buddies, and a well-timed entrance by a fairy godmother make sure things turn out all right. There are a few striking sequences of pure animation--for example, Cinderella is reflected in bubbles drifting through the air--and the design is rich and evocative throughout. It's a simple story padded here agreeably with comic business, particularly Cinderella's rodent pals (dressed up conspicuously like the dwarf sidekicks of another famous Disney heroine) and their misadventures with a wretched cat named Lucifer. There's also much harrumphing and exposition spouting by the King and the Grand Duke. It's a much simpler and more graceful work than the more frenetically paced animated films of today, which makes it simultaneously quaint and highly gratifying. --David Kronke

DVD Features

For another of its classic films, Disney delivers another dazzling DVD with a gorgeous, razor-sharp picture and 5.1 sound. (Note: the 1949 film is properly presented in full-screen format, 1.33 aspect ratio, because widescreen films weren't made until the '50s.) The best part of the supplemental features is the archival material, the absolute highlight of which is two unused songs, "Cinderella's Work Song" (in which Cinderella imagines multiplying herself à la the Sorcerer's Apprentice) and "Dancing on a Cloud."

Bippity-boppity-boo! (click for larger image)
Because these numbers were never animated, they're accompanied by stylish illustrations from the Disney artists, and they're simply marvelous to look at. The artist of much of that material, Mary Blair, gets her due in a 15-minute featurette, while the better known "Nine Old Men" are the subject of a round-table discussion among some of today's top animators. In addition, a 38-minute documentary covers their contributions to specific characters of Cinderella as well as the film in general and the vocal cast. Also on the historical side is "The Cinderella That Almost Was," tracking the development of the project through decades of original Disney concepts, characters, and songs, including the 1922 silent "Laugh-o-Gram," which is also included in its entirety.

The pumpkin transformed (click for larger image)

Additional musical material includes three radio programs and a short promo of the movie by Perry Como, in which he summarizes the plot amid some songs by the Fontaine Sisters, star Ilene Woods, and the host himself. Seven other unused songs (17 minutes total) are available in audio-only. The material for kids is on the sparse side, consisting of two music videos, Disney Channel personality Sally (from "Mike's Super Short Show") learning how to become a princess with the help of the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition crew and others, a minor dancing-princess feature, and a DVD-ROM design studio. Oddest extra: ESPN's "top Cinderella stories," including the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team and Joe Namath's New York Jets, although stories on Mia Hamm and tennis's Williams sisters should appeal to the film's primary target audience of young girls. --David Horiuchi

Good movie, great job by disney fixing it up. The story is a little boring though.

Great script, great animation and lovely music. And of course, the wickedly evil stepmother, who was always my favorite part. Truly worthy of classic status.

My daughter has been playing Cinderella for weeks based on what she gathered from her Princess books. I wanted to make sure that she saw the original movie. She watched it three days in a row, and continues to want to play Cinderella daily. We haven't used the extra features on the DVD-- the main feature is enough electronic entertainment.

5 out of 5 stars Waiting for Cinderella.......2007-07-18

I have an extensive collection of Disney Movies (at least the ones I am interested in). I was very glad to be able to add this Cinderella DVD to my collection.

Product Description

This fine western opens with Van Heflin as a rancher whose family is suffering from the devastatingeffects of a long drought. Heflin needs $200 to build a well, then learns he can obtain the money as a reward for delivering Glenn Ford, a notorious outlaw now in the hands of the law, to the state prison in Yuma, Arizona. Though this will put Heflin in great personal danger, the peaceful man accepts the assignment, knowing what the money will mean to his family. Heflin and Ford hole up in a small hotel in another town while waiting for the train to Yuma. The outlaw begins toying with Heflin's mind, talking in a friendly manner about Heflin's job and financial situation. Playing psychologicalgames, Ford tries to convince Heflin to take $100,000 to look the other way while he escapes. Heflin finds himself in a quandary, desperately needing the money yet being bound by his word to carry out the job. Ford's gang, led by Jaeckel, discovers where their leader is hidden and sets out to rescue him. The town officials abandon Heflin rather than put themselves in danger, leaving the troubled rancher alone to face off with the outlaws. Ford ends up assisting Heflin, helping his captor on the 3:10 to Yuma, explaining, 'I owed you that.' Heflin has come through the ordeal, body and integrityintact, and, as if in answer to this baptism by fire, the skies burst forth with rain, putting an end to the drought.

4 out of 5 stars 3:10 to Yuma (1957) Movie Review.......2007-09-10

3:10 to Yuma is an interesting blend of Western and Suspense, but more captivating still is its methodical examination of fleeting morals, blind justice, and the charismatic villain at the heart of the conflict.

Notorious outlaw Ben Wade (Glenn Ford) and his gang rob a stagecoach transporting significant funds of one Mr. Butterfield (Robert Emhardt) and end up killing the driver in the process. Farmer Dan Evans (Van Heflin) and his son are witness to the tragic events but are unable to help, save for notifying the authorities. When Dan returns home and his son explains the day's harrowing event, his wife appears disappointed by his apparent lack of courage, though his family's safety was foremost in his mind. When Dan is forced to go into town to borrow money for his farm's upkeep, he discovers that Ben Wade has stayed behind and the desperate farmer agrees to help apprehend the nefarious criminal. Upon Wade's capture, Butterfield employs Dan to guard the outlaw until 3:10 when the train to Yuma will arrive and take him to prison. But when Wade's gang arrives in town to free their leader, Dan will find that honor and dedication may only lead to an early grave.

While 3:10 to Yuma may appear to be an action film, it is actually an intricate examination of character, both hero and villain, set against a suspenseful game of cat-and-mouse in the old West. Van Heflin's protagonist represents the forces of good and parallels the difficulties present that don't always allow justice to prevail - at least not at first anyway. Honor and pride play an important role in Dan's decisions, as his wife's initial chagrin instigates his desire to bring Wade to justice. His belief in this subjective moral is so determinate that he even protects Wade from certain death just to attempt to deliver him to the law's judgement.

As unique and interestingly obstinate as Dan's demeanor is, the villain of the film actually overshadows him in charisma and stage presence. Glenn Ford's portrayal of outlaw Ben Wade is one of the finest character studies in cinema, as he approaches the role with a full palette of emotions and intentions, complete with a similar belief in honor and morals that deceptively shifts as the film progresses. The opening scene finds Wade nonchalantly killing one of his own men when held hostage, and such dispassionate violence would lead one to believe the vilest of villains stands before him. However, the narrative follows Wade just as much as Evans and we discover he stays behind in the town of Bisbee to woo the young bartender Emmy (Felicia Farr). His presence is so captivating in fact that not only does he get the girl, but she seems completely unfazed to learn that he is the notorious Ben Wade. When the outlaw is captured by Evans, their witty back-and-forth banter often reveals Wade to be the more entertaining of the two and most often it's hard not to root for the bad guy. The final confrontation with Wade's gang cements what we'd been expecting all along - the line between heroes and villains is a thin one, at least in this engaging battle of wits and integrity.

Though the plot is light on action, the story is heavy on suspense as Dan attempts to carry out his suicidal mission. Mind games replace gunplay and while the film's running time doesn't outstay its welcome, those expecting a nonstop shootout extravaganza may leave unsatisfied, while the film connoisseur will be delighted by the intricate character study. Reminiscent of deliberately paced suspenseful westerns like John Sturges' Bad Day at Black Rock and of course Fred Zinnemann's High Noon, 3:10 to Yuma deserves a place of its own in classic cinema for its daring antagonist and intent focus on the composition of heroism and the trials and tribulations it requires.

5 out of 5 stars 3:10 to Yuma - comparing the old with the new version - in progress.......2007-09-09

Maybe it's my own Wyoming roots clouding my judgment, but I absolutely love a GOOD Western, especially those having Southwest settings, especially Arizona and Old Mexico - having heard tales of them spun by my mother and father since childhood.

When the "new" version of "3:10 to Yuma" hit the previews, I suddenly realized I wanted to make the comparison since I often do that. To make it even more enticing, I had never seen the old version.

The heart of the story centers around a good man, desperate for money, who unwittingly becomes ensnared in the capture of an outlaw, and as part of his volunteering for the paid work, he must "take the prisoner to the 3:10 to Yuma". The interaction between the psyche two men makes for a remarkable tale . He knows only too well that his prisoner, even though shackled, is probably smarter than he is, and certainly more cunning, honed to a razor sharp edge by profession, and backed by a well-organized gang of scoundrels who are still on the loose.

I rate this most excellent older movie 5 stars, even with a few oddities and the highly improbable ending. (other than that, it had every possibility of having actually occurred somewhere back in time, which is one of the things I look for).

I'm amazed I hadn't seen it before. It has all the essential elements of an enduring Classic: a well written, well chosen and unique story line; great casting, and splendid direction, enhanced by a smoldering moment or two between male and female without the graphics deemed so necessary now. (not knocking "now", just making the statement that physical emotion can be transmitted very successfully without the graphics, which, in my view took much more thought process and showcased the talent of this director, who brought the story to life through the well chosen cast and his ability to bring out the best in each of them.

I highly recommend this movie and encourage anyone watching it for the first time to look for all the details that set this one apart from the crowd.

5 out of 5 stars A true classic deserving more repsect.......2007-09-08

This is truly an excellent film which deserves more respect, despite bad cover art. The trailer for the remake already made me shudder. If you are a fan of classic westerns, do yourself a favor and check this out. Glenn Ford is out of character but great as this wily villain. I believe the original story was written by a young Elmore Leonard. The bombastic Frankie Laine soundtrack tune is pretty good too. Do yourself a favor and see this even if you have already seen the remake. It will be very tough for Russel Crowe to outdo Ford (in my opinion).

5 out of 5 stars A great Western deserving more exposure!.......2007-08-14

Despite the lousy cover art, this is a fantastic western and I'm giving the film (not the DVD cover!) 5 stars. The character play between Van Heflin and Glen Ford is dynamic and I wouldn't count on any of that for the action-oriented remake.

1 out of 5 stars Wow, who did the cover art?.......2007-08-11

Wow, somebody please learn these graphic designers a little taste.

That's a modern Chinese steam locomotive plastered onto the cover.

Did they not watch the film to look for the type of imagery they should be using? Was this image just lying around in the Google-sphere waiting to be used? The damn photo has Chinese flags and writing on it! How did this get overlooked?

It's acne on the face of a classic. The film is ABOUT the "3:10" and they can't even get the imagery right! D'oh!

The final complete season of HBO's remarkable Deadwood series is full of surprises and devastating experiences as the nascent, dangerous town prepares to join Dakota territory in 1877. As in the previous two seasons, the question of who will control the town's resources, assets, and people drives much of the drama, affecting all manner of relationships and alliances, often between the most unlikely people. The dominant storyline in Deadwood: The Complete Third Season concerns upcoming elections for mayor and sheriff of the mucky, gold-mining town. The real juice, however, is not so much between the individuals running for office as between two power brokers each trying to steer the results toward their own purposes. Saloon owner and Deadwood's puppetmaster, Al Swearengen (Ian McShane sustaining his brilliant peformance in the previous two seasons), works closely with incumbent lawman Seth Bullock (Timothy Olyphant) on retaining the latter's seat. But Bullock himself has difficulty surrendering his penchant for taking unambiguous action and relying on few words, especially when he has to act like a politician and deal with people such as George Hearst (Gerald McRaney, playing the real-life father of William Randolph Hearst). Swearengen's rival, Hearst--a self-made industrialist who gained his fortune through mining--has every intention of overtaking Deadwood, with his eye particularly on the lucrative mine owned by Bullock's former lover, Alma (Molly Parker). (The violence Hearst employs to get to Alma's claim will stun many Deadwood fans.)

Meanwhile, Bullock's old friend, Sol Starr (John Hawkes), runs for mayor against the feckless E.B. Farnum (William Sanderson), and tries to navigate through his difficult relationship with Trixie (Paula Malcomson) as she grows enraged by former lover Swearengen's manipulation of her and everyone else. Calamity Jane (Robin Weigert) is encouraged to become a public speaker, telling of her misadventures with General George Custer, and she commences a lesbian relationship with Joanie (Kim Dickens), the saloon owner who is becoming increasingly despondent and suicidal. Bullock's relationship with his wife, Martha (Anna Gunn) continues to deepen and become more of an influence on him, Wyatt Earp comes for a visit, and a newcomer to town, Jack Langrishe (Brian Cox), an old friend of Swearengen, attempts to open a theatre. As expected, the season finale concludes with the long-awaited election, but HBO's decision to bring Deadwood to an end required creator David Milch to wrap everything up in a pair of two-hour movies. Still, The Complete Third Season is very satisfying on every level, and will always be, along with the rest of the series, a television landmark. --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Send-Off.......2007-09-08

It is unfortunate that this third season of Deadwood had to be its last, but this hard-hitting cowboy drama rides off into the sunset in style in every way.

Season three picks up some weeks after the end of the second season. With the First Bank of Deadwood opening under the aegis of local mining magnate Alma Ellsworth, the camp and the surrounding community are preparing for their first elections - with Seth Bullock and Sol Star running for sheriff and mayor, respectively. At the same time, however, the specter of the camp's latest resident, half-mad robber baron George Hearst, looms large, as he stretches out his hands in an effort to take the camp - and its wealth - for himself. As a result, Sweringen and Cy Tolliver play a dangerous game of politics with Hearst and the camp in an effort to keep themselves, their dependents, and their interests afloat in a sea of increasingly brutal intrigue. On other notes: a company of classical players come to town, the camp acquires a new school, and a tragic dispute ensues over ownership of the local livery stable.

Ian McShane is as brilliant as ever as Al Sweringen, a darkly sympathetic figure who exhibits harrowing ruthlessness and light pathos in equal measure; he is the character one always counts on, and McShane does not disappoint. Timothy Olyphant's Bullock is as hard-bitten and angry as ever, but seems to mellow in this season, adjusting himself to married life. The real treat of the season, however, is Gerald McRaney's (TV's "Major Dad") portrayal of George Hearst. A rough-hewn figure of the Gilded Age, Hearst is a violent, cruel, and brilliant counterpoint (and counterpart) to Sweringen's more backwoods boss figure. Hearst wears gentility and streetsmart bravado in equal measure, barely masking a mad and insatiable lust for power that reveals itself in unsettling subtle, silently explosive ways.

As ever, the show is well-acted and brilliantly designed; costumes and sets remain impeccable. While certain of the secondary plots fail or ring hollow, he overall thrust of the season is fast-paced, raw, and scintillating. For fans of the series, this is truly a fitting end. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking work.......2007-09-04

Deadwood is simply the best thing I've ever seen on film. It is absolutely breathtaking. It's been called Shakespearean, and it is, with poetic and beautiful language and images, albeit filled with vulgarity and violence. The writing is poetic, the plots unpredictable-- particularly considering the show is based in part on history-- the characters are memorable and complex, all the acting is seamless, and the photography, courtesy of the director, I suppose, can bring tears to my eyes. The show is addictive, and it is difficult to believe that even a corporate entity would dare to cancel a show this good, no matter what it cost to produce. All three seasons are excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Genius.......2007-09-01

This is perhaps the only Television series I have ever seen that could claim to be a truly great artistic achievement. It is like transposing a combination of Dickens and Shakespeare into the Wild West (however bizarre that may sound), and it amazingly always has the sense of a dramatic (staged) production rather than a TV show. The performances are without exception magnificent. Ian McShane gives one of the great performances anywhere, ever, and the rest of the cast are hardly less worthy of praise. If David Milch never does anything again this will go down as a work of genius. Inspiring to see the potential of television glimpsed in this glorious achievement; depressing to acknowledge it is a show that reaches well beyond the carefully and cynically dumbed-down limits allowed by the vested political and commercial interests that run this country.

2 out of 5 stars coulda, woulda, shoulda.......2007-08-31

Interesting premise: fact based stories, realistic production design and a good cast all set in a real town from the old west but all undermined by some silly competition to see which of the low-lifes can use the F-word the most. One well played scene after another gets the dramatic momentum ripped out from under it by this over-the-top dialogue. Perhaps they thought that if it worked for the Sopranos it would work here.

5 out of 5 stars More of the Same.......2007-08-24

Deadwood--The Complete Third Season is as good as seasons one and two. The only fly in the ointment is that there will be no fourth season.

An irresistible concept meets computer-generated wonders in Night at the Museum, inspired by a 1993 children's book by Milan Trenc. Ben Stiller stars as Larry Daley, an underachieving inventor waiting for his ship to come in while getting evicted from one apartment after another for lack of funds. Larry's son needs some stability, so the well-meaning ne'er-do-well takes a job as night watchman at New York City's Museum of Natural History. What the soon-to-retire guards (Dick Van Dyke, Mickey Rooney, Bill Cobbs) don't tell him is that an ancient pharaoh's tablet in the museum causes everything on display to come to life at night. Thus, Larry meets representations of Teddy Roosevelt, Attila the Hun, fire-worshipping cavemen, and Roman Empire soldiers, and learns to cope with an excitable T-Rex and man-eating, ancient animals. The film might have left things at that, but an added story element gives Night at the Museum some extra urgency and excitement, especially for kids: Larry becomes responsible for keeping this nightly miracle going and preventing anything in the museum from dying due to exposure to sunrise. Computer effects, as well as wildly imaginative costumes and makeup, help make the film appeal to the 8-year-old in everyone. Director Shawn Levy (The Pink Panther) works with a hugely talented cast, including Robin Williams, Owen Wilson, Ricky Gervais, Carla Gugino, and Steve Coogan. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Movie.......2007-09-17

This movie was so funny. Has a bit of a serious tone in it at times but Ben Stiller pulls this off as he does most of his movies. I laughed so hard. Great for the whole family to watch together.

5 out of 5 stars Funny movie, pretty good transfer.......2007-09-14

Pretty entertaining and funny movie. Transfer in general is pretty good, a few artifacts are noted however.

Overall, I would buy it if you want a good laugh for the family.

4 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-09-11

This was a cute story and I loved the special effects. Robin Williams is a scream. My son loves this movie and we've watched it at least 10 times by now!

4 out of 5 stars A little corny but funny........2007-09-11

So I thought Robin Williams would be funnier in this film than expected but hey it was more about Ben Stiller so I guess that makes sense. Anyways it is a good comic relief if you are into something a tad bit corny but has somewhat clean humor to it. Nothing terrible. Makes for a good film night.

Dawson's Creek - The Complete First Season: Kevin Williamson (the Scream movie series, I Know What You Did Last Summer) created this engaging drama, which chronicles a group of young friends' passage from adolescence to young adulthood in the small coastal town of Capeside, Massachusetts. Based on Williamson's own experiences growing up, "Dawson's Creek" focuses on fifteen-year-olds Dawson (James Van Der Beek) and Joey (Katie Holmes), who have been friends since they were five and are trying to cope with the way their friendship is changing now that their hormones are raging. Add to the mix their friend Pacey (Joshua Jackson) and the new girl in town, Jen (Michelle Williams), and you can count on extra twists to the drama in their already turbulent lives.

Filmed on location in Wilmington, Durham, and Raleigh, North Carolina, this first season marks the beginning of an unforgettable journey that explores the agony and the ecstasy of teenage life. Can the kids of "Dawson's Creek" really grow up without growing apart? Starring James Van Der Beek, Katie Holmes, Michelle Williams, Joshua Jackson, and Oliver Hudson.

Dawson's Creek - The Complete Second Season: The saga continues in this thought-provoking second season. Set in Capeside, a small coastal town near Boston, "Dawson's Creek" tells the story of five teenagers struggling through adolesence. Dawson Leary an introspective dreamer, and Joey Potter a precocious tomboy unaware of her beauty, have been best friends since childhood. Pals Jennifer, Pacey, and Jack (Kerr Smith) join them as they live, love and learn.

Dawson's Creek - The Complete Third Season: It's a new season and a new semester for the Capeside friends. With the pressures of high school increasing and senior year just around the corner, Dawson, Joey and the rest of the gang have a lot of planning to do. Along with pals Pacey, Jennifer and Jack, they deal with sex, ethics, jealousy and more.

Dawson's Creek - The Complete Fourth Season: It's senior year for Dawson, Joey, Pacey, Jen and Jack! After spending the summer together, Joey and Pacey find it difficult to keep their romance going with the realities of school, college applications and their strained relationship with Dawson. Dawson rediscovers his true life's dream, Jen turns over a new leaf after getting a new boyfriend, and Jack tries to rebuild relationships after revealing he's gay.

Dawson's Creek - The Complete Fifth Season: In the series' fifth season, the gang makes the transition from adolescence to adulthood as they embark on their first year of college. Joey, Jen and Jack all move to Boston for college and try to adjust to life in the big city while Dawson pursues his dream of attending film school in Los Angeles and Pacey stays behind in Capeside to work. The fifth season also featured regular guest appearances by Chad Michael Murray (One Tree Hill), Sherilyn Fenn (Darkness Falls) and Busy Phillips (Freaks and Geeks). During its six year run, Dawson's Creek was honored with the GLAAD Media Award for "Outstanding Dramatic TV Series," nominated for a TV Guide Award for "Favorite Teen Show" and garnered three wins at the 2001 Teen Choice Awards.

Dawson's Creek - The Complete Sixth Season: It's a season of discontent for the Dawson's gang, with broken hearts and interrupted dreams causing major friction for all. Joey and Dawson rekindle their romance but the flame quickly dies out when he reveals he had a romance with an actress in L.A. - the same actress who's coming to Boston to star in Todd's movie. Audrey's dad helps Pacey get a job and makes her singing debut with Emma's band, but her inner demons threaten to destroy everything. And Jen faces the biggest challenge of her life - one that will have a lasting effect on them all.

Dawson's Creek - The Series Finale (Extended Cut):

Part One: It's five years later and Dawson, Joey, Pacey, Jen and Jack are reunited in Capeside for Dawson's mom's wedding. But the celebratory mood comes to an end when they receive some heartbreaking news.

Part Two: As the gang faces a future more uncertain than ever before, Joey struggles to come to terms with her true feelings for Dawson, Pacey and her current boyfriend. When she finally does, she surprises everyone with her decision.

5 out of 5 stars This would have been nice.......2007-09-10

Compared to what I paid for this individually, this is a steal. I LOVE this series. I was a fan from eppisode 1. I had to hunt this set down piece by piece a few years ago. Having it all together like this would have been really nice. This is absolutely a gift that keeps on giving.

4 out of 5 stars a little pricey.......2007-07-14

I thought this item was a bit overpriced but it was a gift for my daughter and she really wanted it. I couldn't find it in the stores. It arrived in good time as usual though.

Martin Scorsese's 1978 capsule history of the Band is mixed with footage of the group's allegedly last performance (certainly their last performance as a quintet) in this particularly stylish concert film. Scorsese shoots the players and their sundry guests with the same flair and enthusiasm one can see in the later The Color of Money or Goodfellas. He also proves a good interviewer with Band members, particularly Robbie Robertson, whose sleepy-sexy good looks make a star-caliber impression in close-up. But the film's real hook is the stage show, which features a rotation of rock legends (Van Morrison, Joni Mitchell, Paul Butterfield, Bob Dylan, and so on) playing with the Band before a wildly appreciative audience. --Tom Keogh

.. I can't say it any better than the other reviewers said it. I remember seeing this film/concert on Showtime years ago, & it still sounds fresh every time I watch it now on this great DVD version. (And I watch it at least once a week). Here's the riff in all of this; aside from the 10 bucks each that Garth was charging the guys for music lessons, .. I thought Robbie had passed away, for the last 20 years. I had read this in a Rock Encyclopedia 20 some years ago, & believed it; & thought that rock had lost one of "the great musicians" of our time. Whether it be songwriting, or guitar playing, or producing, this man has made a significant contribution to music that is hard to rival. I don't care what Levon says .. lol .. & that is not to diminish Levons' own unique contributions. Robbie was the "guiding force" & leader of "The Band". Well, I very gladly learned that Robbie had not passed away during the Hall of Fame induction ceremony for Jackson Browne & Bob Seger .. the camera panned to a table where Bruce Springsteen & Robbie Robertson were sitting. I thought I'd seen a ghost .. "that's him, I know it is" & thankfully it was. I later learned that Richard Manuel had passed, & was incorrectly reported as Robbie. Both Richard & Rick Danko are gone now. Let's appreciate the surviving members. The Last Waltz has so many great moments; but one of my favorites is when Eric Clapton's guitar strap breaks & Robbie picks it up without missing a beat!!! "The Man" .. & the camera pans to Clapton who is smiling with gleaming approval of the performance. I thought Van Morrison gave the best guest performance as well. Great DVD!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-08-15

The Last Waltz is the best rock concert video I have ever seen. The sound is great, the video appropriate, the sense authentic. I hope other bands will review this and force their video production company to rise to this level.

As in Basic Instinct, a lovely lady takes the lead in Black Book, but this time Paul Verhoeven has more than cheap thrills in mind. Towards the end of WWII, Rachel Stein (the vibrant Carice von Houten), a Jewish singer, is living with a gentile family in the countryside. When Allied forces bomb the area, she's forced to flee. On her perilous journey to The Hague (Verhoeven's hometown), brunette Rachel joins the Resistance and changes her identity to blonde Ellis de Vries. Her next order of business: infiltrate Gestapo headquarters. Like many Verhoeven heroines, Rachel aces her assignment--and then some. First, she seduces the handsome Captain Müntze (Sebastian Hoch, The Lives of Others), then she falls in love with him. Müntze, who returns her affection, isn't what he appears to be, but their relationship puts both at great risk. At this point, the filmmaker expertly kicks the proceedings into high gear, before concluding on a bittersweet note. Naturally, since this is a Verhoeven picture, there's plenty of wry humor and uninhibited sexuality along the way. Starting with 1985's Flesh + Blood, the Dutch director released an American movie every two to three years. After the poorly received Hollow Man, however, Verhoeven took a six-year break. Black Book, a return to his native Holland, was worth the wait. (He began work on the screenplay in the 1980s.) It works triple-time as a thriller, a tribute to Holland's Jewish population, and a poison pen letter to the Dutch opportunists who would attempt to sell them out. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

In the darkest days of World War II, Jewish fugitives attempt to escape occupied Holland - only to face a Nazi ambush. Rachel Stein (Carice van Houten) alone survives the attack and joins the Dutch Resistance to avenge her family. She soon confronts the ultimate test: she must infiltrate German headquarters by tempting Captain Ludwig Mÿntze (Sebastian Hoch). In the heat of passion, he uncovers her duplicity...but keeps her secret. Then Rachel's espionage reveals that a murderous traitor lurks within Resistance ranks. Unable to fully trust anyone, Rachel navigates a minefield of deception and becomes an enemy to both sides. Epic, passionate, breathtaking, Black Book relates an untold story of World War II where the distinctions between good and evil become blurred by the complexities of human nature.

The Black Book" tells the story of a Dutch-Jewish girl, Rachel Stein, who works for the resistance in Nazi-occupied Holland during the final days of World War II.

The film starts and finishes on a Kibbutz in Israel in 1956. A tourist, Ronnie (Halina Reijn) wis visiting Israel with her Canadian husband who she met during the liberation of Holland, when she is delighted and surprised to recognise the heroine (Carice van Houten) who had been a friend during the war, teaching at the Kibbutz school.

After Ronnie and her husband have gone, van Houten's character begins to reminisce to the circumstances leading up to her first meeting with Ronnie, and the viewer follows her thoughts back to September 1944 when she was hiding from the Nazis under her real name of Rachel Stein.

Rachel was a former famous singer from a wealthy Jewish family, who went into hiding when the Germans over-ran Holland. A stray bomb wrecks Rachel's hiding place, but someone who claimss to be working for the Resistance gives her the opportunity to flee. However, the group Rachel
