Description
Down on his luck after losing his job and his girlfriend on the same day, Larry decides to join his neighbor, Bill (Bill Engvall), and his combat-happy buddy, Everett (DJ Qualls), for a relaxing weekend of drinking and target practice. But when the three hapless guys are mistaken for Army Reservists by the hard-nosed Sergeant Kilgore (Keith David), they're loaded onto an army plane headed for Fallujah, Iraq - and mistakenly ejected in a Humvee somewhere over Mexico. Convinced they're actually in the Middle East, the clueless wannabe soldiers save a rural village from a siege of bandits and become local heroes. But when Carlos Santana (Danny Trejo), a ruthless, karaoke-loving warlord, strikes back, Larry, Bill and Everett have to lay down their beers and take up their arms - and prove they just might be real soldiers after all...
Customer Reviews:
Worse than Stupid.......2007-09-13
Having seen previews, I was really looking forward to seeing this movie. Three American Rednecks who are on their way to Iraq but end up in Mexico should have provided plenty of laughs. It should've been stupid funny, but it was worse than stupid. There actually are people like this out there, but most of us know to keep them under a rock somewhere, not trot them out on film as if there is anything to laugh about in these guys. Bill Engvall plays a character who is happy he had a slip n' fall at the Walmart, so he can be out of work for 11 more months. DJ Qualls could be funny as a trigger happy cop-wanna-be, but first we had to find out that he flashes women at a nearby restaurant. Maybe that could be funny, but it is not here. In fact, every joke falls flat. Even Larry the Cable Guy can't fix this one. This movie is awkward and is so uncomfortable to watch I can't tell you how it ends. If you really have to see this movie for yourself, wait until it hits Redbox and get it for $1. Then you won't feel like somebody done you wrong.
The invasion of Mexico........2007-09-09
So what were you expecting from Larry the Cable Guy and Bill Engvall? As long as you don't come in expecting too much, then you should enjoy this rather harmless comedy about three buddies who accidentally get sent to Mexico thinking it's Iraq. But they do manage to defend a small town from roaming bandits led by Danny Trejo's evil Carlos Santana (you get the idea of the films level of sophistication). You could think of it as an update of the classic "Three Amigos". It is a pretty light movie that kids and adults may enjoy, as long as they don't expect too much. I would really give it three and a half stars, but it was pretty similar to "Wild Hogs", so I had to go down. That and the way the Army is portrayed is pretty disrespectful to the soldiers serving now.
Overall - a disappointment.......2007-09-09
I have read through the reviews of this movie - both pro and con. Some I agree with, some I don't. Again, both pro and con.
First, let me say that I strive to be as politically INcorrect as possible. I have no use for the one sided bias that is political correctness - and nobody has the right NOT to be 'offended'.
Second, I love the comedy of Larry The Cable Guy and, especially, Bill Engvall. I have watched them for years.
So, along comes Delta Farce. It is politically INcorrect. It has Larry The Cable Guy and Bill Engvall. Why is this red neck, politically INcorrect, white, normal sexually preferenced male only giving it 2 stars? Well, I just didn't think it was funny. The first 20 to 30 minutes got a few laughs. However, you can get most of that from the previews on TV and in the theaters. In all honesty, my wife and I shut it off 2/3rd the way through. We just weren't laughing at that point. The gay Mexican joke was funny at first, but it was ran into the ground. The plot wandered all over the place. We just didn't enjoy it.
I am glad I didn't pay to see it in the theaters, and I will return the rental to Blockbuster tomorrow to never have the movie grace our doorstep again.
Methinks Thou Doth Protest Too Much !.......2007-09-09
The reviews, with the exception of John Nelson's, are way off. I've found that 99% of the time, when someone doesn't like or hates a comedian is because they don't understand the humour. This has to be the case here. Larry and Bill Engvall are two of the funniest comedians alive. They don't have to work blue to get millions and millions of people to like them. Maybe people don't like this movie because of several reasons ---
A. They don't understand funny things (most probable)
B. They know/are related to rednecks (ie. real people) and are embarrassed
C. They think that to be funny, a movie/comedian has to be really intellectual, high brow, and dry-witted. What's wrong with fart humour ? As my favourite DJ says about his morning show "booger, booger, fart, fart, weiner"
D. They're jealous because they're just like Larry or Bill and aren't famous themselves
E. They think that every movie has to be Oscar quality. This isn't the case. Not every director makes a movie thinking that it's going to win a million awards. Most of the time, people make movies because it's fun and they think people will like it.
My lying eyes.......2007-09-07
it takes an immense generosity of patience to sit through this piece of cr&p. its like a home video shot by special ed kids who twitch and grunt idiotically. LTCG doesn't translate too well on movies.

Major Disappointment.......2007-09-05
I really like Larry the Cable Guy and Bill Engvalls. If this movie had been my first exposure to them I would probably never have watched anything else of theirs. Watching either of these comedians usually leaves me in stitches. Watching this movie left me in boredom. It wasn't that the jokes didn't work. It was more like I couldn't tell where the jokes, if any, were. Even the blatant joke of the outhouse walls falling down around Larry the Cable Guy didn't work. It just wasn't funny. Larry acted as if the outhouse walls fell down around him five or six times a day and he was bored. Bill Engvall was left holding a handful of one-liners that just didn't work. DJ Qualls is new to me, but he came closer to being funny than anyone else in the movie, although the end result was to leave me wondering just exactly what his sexual orientation was. The story line, while improbable, was potentially hilarious. Perhaps a different director could have made this movie work, C.B. Harding was certainly wide of the mark. Borrow this movie if you just have to watch it. It isn't even worth a 99¢ bargain price.

Product Description
Get ready for laughs the size of Texas when Olivia Newton-John, Beau Bridges, Bonnie Bedelia and Delta Burke lead an all-star cast in this twisted, white-trash tale "that puts the 'fun' in 'dysfunctional'" (Toronto Sun). The hilariously sordid details about a southern family surface with a vengeance when relatives converge for the funeral of "Grandma Peggy," who died after tripping over her lover's wooden legs! Toss in a couple of feuding, big-haired daughters, a jumpy aunt who just quit smoking, the scorned neighbor from hell, and crazy, cross-dressing "Brother Boy" - and you've got an outrageous "train wreck you can't help but watch!" (Chicago Tribune)

If you've got a taste for big hair, broad Texas accents, and gay rights, this mixture of white-trash comedy and coming-out melodrama is for you. Sordid Lives starts out as chicken-fried farce, as a funeral is prepared for a woman who died when she tripped over her adulterous lover's wooden legs; about midway the emphasis shifts to a drag queen unfairly held in a mental institution and the dead woman's grandson, an actor in Los Angeles who hasn't come out to his mother. The tone shifts wildly, and the humor depends on your fondness for the white-trash genre--if you like it, this will tickle your ribs; if you don't, it'll fall flat as the panhandle landscape. But it must be said that the cast (including Bonnie Bedelia, Beau Bridges, Delta Burke, and Olivia Newton-John) dives right in, no matter how over-the-top their characters get. --Bret Fetzer
Customer Reviews:
A "must see"!.......2007-08-23
The funniest movie I have ever seen and the actors are top notch. I bought a copy 5 years ago and lent it out, never got it back so had to buy another. A "must have" for any DVD collection!
Sordid Lives.......2007-07-26
This movie is hilarious! It starts off slow and I was tempted to turn it off. I am so glad I didn't. Leslie Jordan is brilliant.
The Best Movie EVER.......2007-07-12
This has to be the funniest movie I have ever seen. I watch it at least once a month. Brother Boy is tooo funny. His one liners and obsession with Tammy Wynette make the movie. This movie has everything. From the flaming gay, to the queen of denial, to the woman done wrong, it is hilarious. You watch this movie and think, "I know these people, they are my neighbors, perhaps even my family members!!!!" I would love to see the play and compare it to the movie. Don't miss this one.
Sordid Lives-A true Story or fiction?.......2007-07-06
This movie is hilarious, and embarrassingly, epitomitses the south, or Bible belt. As many reviewers have said before, if you have ever lived in the south, you will almost certainly see parts of your life in it, or can relate to it. It can be a learning tool for people uncomfortable with homosexuality because it also has good, helpful ideas in dealing with that subject and others.
Don't answer that...just think about it!.......2007-05-29
We have watched this movie about nine times in the month that we have had it. The performances are great, especially Bonnie Bodelia's portrait of a mother in denial. It makes us laugh and cry every time. What more can you want for in a movie? Don't answer that...just think about it.

For a while, Designing Women captured some of the spirit of Hollywood's silkiest and smartest, Golden Age sophistication. Debuting in the fall of 1986, this half-hour sitcom--about four Atlanta belles who either owned or worked for an upscale interior design firm--seamlessly blended an understated glamour with razor-sharp dialogue, polished Southern grace, and a ripened female perspective--a sort of perfumed but unequivocal feminism for college-educated women over 30. The core cast of stage and film veterans--Delta Burke, Dixie Carter, Annie Potts, and Jean Smart--was unusually strong, and their characters' problems and conflicts were unique to adulthood rather than the protracted adolescence common among today's comedies. The five episodes on this disc represent some of the show's strongest material, including season two's "Killing All the Right People," which--for its time--was bold in introducing a character dying of AIDS complications. Also quite witty is "Reservations for Eight," in which the Georgia quartet and their lovers bicker over gender stereotypes. --Tom Keogh

I want to have the whole sereis on dvd, not just 5 episodes. How does one go about voting for it? I love this show.
I love this show! .......2007-09-11
This is one of my favorite shows and this product is a good sample of the diversity.
Great show, but lousy edition.......2007-08-23
I was really excited about giving this DVD to my Mom for Christmas and she was very happy when she opened it, but when she tried to watch it, it stopped working half way through!!! She couldn't get it to play again! Also, when are the powers that be going to release the whole show?? Some of us having been waiting a long time!
Time to release the rest, too!.......2007-06-26
This show was one of the wittiest, most original sitcoms. It dragged on way too long, but the first 4-5 years were very, very good. The syndicated re-runs on TV are heavily edited for time, and unfortunately, most of the funniest moments have not been seen on TV in years.
While we're waiting for the complete DVD collection to be released, this will certainly do! These are some of the most memorable episodes. Watch them again, complete for the first time in almost 20 years, and remember what it was you loved about this show.
I'll wait patiently..........2007-05-09
Thank you, IowaHawkeye "Warren" for your explanation. Yeah, it makes sense that it would be too costly for now. Of all the shows out there, this is one of the few for which I would pay a pretty penny. I taped oodles of episodes with the original cast when I was in grad school. I ended up tossing most of the tapes but kept a few. I've watched the reruns on Lifetime so many times that I know the dialogue in some parts of each episode by heart. The one TiVo'd episode I have is the one where Julia helps Bill reconsider his dilemma about Charlene and his Nancy. I tear up every time. This was such a charming show, well written, progressive, poignant yet downright funny. Just like some others have mentioned, my sister is a big fan of Golden Girls while I love, love, love DW. Yes, the mention of Noel, Consuela and T Tommy Reed does bring a smile to my face. I'll continue to wait for the DVD release...

Not entirely practical.......2007-09-08
I didn't think this video was all that great. I mean, it actually takes the time to teach you grapevine(?!). Admittedly, I have no rhythm, but I don't really feel like this video gave me much more. I think I've learned more from my salsa dancing video for club dancing, if you can believe that. Out of the 24 or so different things they try to teach you, I found about 4 or 5 helpful. I agree with another reviewer in that if I saw someone dancing the way the woman in this video does, I would be tempted to laugh.
5 stars if you are a female.......2007-08-14
This dvd is of great production quality. The dvd menu makes it easy and convenient to use. The moves shown and demonstrated are basic, and are presented in a slow manner that makes it very easy to learn. However, the moves are all very feminine.
In the opening of the video the instructor says that the moves are the basics for anyone, male or female. Maybe in other regions of the world this is true, but here in the USA these toe tapping, hip turning moves are undoubtably effeminate.
My reccomendation is that if you are a woman looking for some basic moves, buy it. As for the men out there, avoid this and try the dvd "Hip Hop Moves For The Club" by Nightclub Dance Series. I am currently having a blast learning the moves in that dvd, they are strictly for men and make you look really hip.
No Good.......2007-05-07
This video was very very basic. If you're like me and just want to learn how to dance in the club like other girls/guys. This video isnt for you. As a matter of a fact, I can't think of anyone who could benefit from this video.
Very Basic Dance Video.......2007-03-27
This video is very basic, starting with stepping in place and throwing in a bit of grape vine, etc. in the later steps. If you don't know anything about stepping or moving this may be helpful, though if I saw the instructor in a nightclub dancing the way she does on this video I may laugh out loud.
Definitely worth it!.......2007-02-06
A few years ago I purchased a solo latin dancing dvd for beginners, and it was HARD and I was FRUSTRATED. I didn't want to waste my money again, but I went for it. She was great! I never got frustrated, and have found that when my radio is on, instead of only being able to dance to one every 30, I can now put her moves to almost EVERY song! I love it! Get it memorized in your head, and you can dance all night long. Definitely for beginners. It did what I wanted which was allowed me to look and feel good solo dancing!

It must've made for a great pitch meeting: Male chauvinist advertising executive gains the ability to hear the thoughts of any woman around him. Add Mel Gibson--as Nick, the divorced "man's man" who can charm almost any woman into bed--and you've got high-concept comedy made in Hollywood heaven, right? Not necessarily. The smartest thing director Nancy Meyers did with What Women Want is dispose of this ludicrous plot contrivance before it wears out its welcome. It's fun to see Mel react to a deafening chorus of female thoughts, but his dubious "gift"--courtesy of an accidental electro-shock in his bathtub--is a mixed blessing for the audience. The women in Nick's life conveniently think in complete sitcom-friendly sentences, and the novelty quickly wears thin.
The movie improves by focusing on the fallout of Nick's predicament. Exploiting his unfair advantage, he sabotages the career of his new boss (Helen Hunt) even as he's falling in love with her; says all the right things to the aspiring actress (Marisa Tomei) who previously spurned his advances; and uses mind reading to curry favor with his 15-year-old daughter (Ashley Johnson). This two-faced scheming isn't malicious, however, and What Women Want is blessed by Gibson's amiably nuanced performance. His graceful riff on Fred Astaire is a dazzling surprise, and as Nick reforms, Gibson takes major credit for whatever depth this movie achieves. After a bit of nonsense, What Women Want has a lot to say about male and female behavior, be it noble or unappealing. It's both amusing and truthful, and that's almost as fun as a glimpse into someone else's brain. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Adorable movie with a classic flair.......2007-06-17
This is a charming movie with a great soundtrack and superb acting by Mel Gibson and Marisa Tomei. Gibson reaches a peak of comedic genius in the movie, playing funny and compassionate moments with equal skill. Although the movie's premise is rather absurd--a man who can hear women's thoughts after accidentally electrocuting himself in the bathroom--the viewer suspends disbelief and is drawn into the plot. Marisa Tomei is hilarious as the ditzy coffee shop girl. Delta Burke and Valerie Perrine, as well as Bette Midler, all have minor roles and are great in them. Mark Feuerstein as Gibson's buddy is also excellent. Some of the funny lines get a laugh from me every single time I watch (e.g., "The poodle give you that one?"). I loved the music, which included songs by Frank Sinatra, Bobby Darin, Cole Porter, and more. This is a romantic comedy, and although I find it hard to see Helen Hunt as a vulnerable, romantic leading lady--I think of her more as the sardonic character in "Mad About You"--I thought she acted well in the movie and even worked in some "cupcake"-type moves. This is a DVD whose extra features are worth watching, particularly director Nancy Meyers' comments on how the movie was made. This movie is a keeper that marries the modern dilemmas of romance with the feel of romantic comedies from the 40s and 50s. Mel Gibson's dance scene and the scene where he waxes his leg are outstanding, and he is entirely believable as the chauvinistic playboy who is shocked at what women think. If you want to have fun watching a movie, this is the one for you.
Great rapport between Mel Gibson and Helen Hunt . . . .......2007-01-22
This is a funny movie--Mel Gibson is so cute and Helen Hunt is great as the new boss in town. As I was watching this, I couldn't imagine any other actor playing Mel Gibson's role--he has a great self-deprecating sense of humor. Highly recommended.
i bet it's real stupid,.......2006-07-29
i have not seen this movie, nor do i EVER want to. i've only seen the previews on tv and read about it in previews. why do i think it's probably one of the stupidest, pointless movies on the face of the earth?, because i bet just about every guy who's had trouble getting girls watched it, took notes, and believed each and every single thing that was in this movie, and believed every sentence that was in this movie where you got to hear the woman thinking out loud in the movie. i bet many guys took this movie way too seriously.
well, i bet some of the stuff said in there where it has the woman thinking out loud was garbage. not all women are the same, and not all men are the same... you can't believe every thing a woman says. not all women want what that one individual woman wants and some women lie. but hey, nobody's perfect. every guy had individual tastes too, and guys lie sometimes to.
i for one, as far what i finad sexually appealing with a woman's appearance, like women who are a tad bigger. i like'em to weigh about 140 to 160 lbs. if they're around 5'5" to 5'7". yet there are guys who like petite women(i personlly don't know why).
there shouldn't be a movie that tries to help guys get girls. the movie title "what women want" was just wrong. i bet many guys thought of it as the gateway to seriously improving their game if they're looking for a date.
i personally think guys put way too much emphasis on trying to find out what women want. i don't think that should be necessary. i think it's ridiculous. i think the guy should be himself like the girl is practially all the time and just feel good about himself. not every girl is going to be into every guy... i think self-confidence is probably the most important thing for a guy to have when trying to get women.
i'm a guy and that's my opinion....
What Women Want....Does Anyone Really Know?.......2006-07-23
This is pretty much the typical romantic comedy, but with an interesting twist; the main character has the ability to hear womens thoughts. The important thing was that for it to work, the character would be placed in a lot of interesting comical situations, where you could laugh at it, without it being too mocking of womens thoughts, or too far-out to enjoy. It succeeds pretty well, however the way the character gains and loses the ability were handled somewhat poorly. The humor is good, and there is plenty of it, throughout the entire runtime. The characters were believable, and the main character eventually grew to be likable. The plot was good, and the acting likewise. The only thing that brings the movie down, is the poor execution of the gain/loss of the ability to hear womens thoughts, and the sugar-sweet ending, that was too predictable and plain boring, as anyone who's seen one of the hundreds of romantic comedies out there. No actual new stuff brought to the table, apart from the interesting and original concept of a man being able to hear what women are thinking.
I enjoyed the movie thoroughly and enjoyed the humor. The film was filled with talented acting, laughs, and lighthearted suspense. It would be a good recommendation for anyone who is bored and desires a humorous, fun movie. The idea of a man being able to read women's minds is clever and amusing. Should this ever happen, would it be classified as a gift, or a nightmare?

Sergei Eisenstein's revolutionary sophomore feature has so long stood as a textbook example of montage editing that many have forgotten what an invigoratingly cinematic experience he created. A 20th-anniversary tribute to the 1905 revolution, Eisenstein portrays the revolt in microcosm with a dramatization of the real-life mutiny aboard the battleship Potemkin. The story tells a familiar party-line message of the oppressed working class (in this case the enlisted sailors) banding together to overthrow their oppressors (the ship's officers), led by proto-revolutionary Vakulinchuk. When he dies in the shipboard struggle the crew lays his body to rest on the pier, a moody, moving scene where the citizens of Odessa slowly emerge from the fog to pay their respects. As the crowd grows Eisenstein turns the tenor from mourning a fallen comrade to celebrating the collective achievement. The government responds by sending soldiers and ships to deal with the mutinous crew and the supportive townspeople, which climaxes in the justly famous (and often imitated and parodied) Odessa Steps massacre. Eisenstein edits carefully orchestrated motions within the frame to create broad swaths of movement, shots of varying length to build the rhythm, close-ups for perspective and shock effect, and symbolic imagery for commentary, all to create one of the most cinematically exciting sequences in film history. Eisenstein's film is Marxist propaganda to be sure, but the power of this masterpiece lies not in its preaching but its poetry. --Sean Axmaker
Description
Stylistically, The Battleship Potemkin serves as a revolutionary film, not only in its subject matter, but also in its unique use of montage. As a pioneer who championed a new purpose for cinema, Eisenstein proposed a "kino fist" approach to filmmaking, one in which the film attacks the viewer's senses with symbolic metaphors, rhythmic editing, and highly-charged melodrama. Includes a rare documentary on Eisentein.

Battleship Potemkin DVD .......2007-09-17
This Battleship Potemkin DVD is a glimpse into the lives of Russians just at the time when the era of the Tzars was coming to an end. Black and white, and a SILENT film, often a bit dull, but it will give you a perspective of Russian life that you will probably not be able to see anywhere else. Especially for fans or students of Russian history.
Delta edition that sells for $6.99--a good buy.......2007-08-28
There are currently two versions of this film available, and I see that Kino is releasing a version in October on two discs. I am specifically commenting on the inexpensive Delta edition. This seems to be the official Soviet edition of the film. The opening title sequence says that it is copyrighted 1976 by Sovexportfilm. The musical score is by Dmitri Shostakovich with a string of copyright dates from 1942 to 1967. This edition of the film lasts one hour and thirteen minutes.
The picture quality is quite acceptable but far from ideal. (Perhaps the forthcoming Kino edition will give us the restored version this film deserves.) The images are mostly easy to see although there are the usual old-film dirt and scratches. There are one or two brief scenes with noticeable visual problems. The very poor quality of the documentary shows just how bad the transfer could have been. All in all, this does not look any worse than when I first saw this film in a theater many years ago.
The intertitle cards are in Russian with English subtitles added.
The sound of the musical score is the usual poor quality heard in Soviet films in the 1930s and 1940s.
The untitled documentary is another story. There is no title and credit sequence. Internal evidence suggests it was made around 1955, but its visual quality is very poor. The narration, in English, suggests that this is a Soviet film, particularly as it comments on Eisenstein's occasional ideological lapses, especially in the second part of "Ivan the Terrible"!
I hadn't seen this film, which is so important in the history of cinema, in many years. But recently an acquaintance went to Odessa and brought me a postcard of the famous steps. Seeing them again made me want to see the film again, too. I'm glad I did.
As a bonus, a nice 9 1/2" by 14 1/2" reproduction of the original movie poster is included on folded heavy paper.
One final note, a better transliteration would be "Potyomkin" rather than "Potemkin", but I guess that's a lost battle!
Requisite film for any serious study of the medium, though not the best quality film to DVD transfer........2007-07-13
In the context of the 21st Century, the film "Battleship Potemkin" would undoubtedly fall flat, but given the available technology and the infancy of the medium when the film was produced, Sergei Eisenstein had indeed created an epic motion picture.
While the modern DVD incarnate features a less than remarkable transfer, the fact that it is available attests to its endurance even as a silent film.
Like most any film, it cannot capture the overall story of the 1905 Potemkin Mutiny, or the 1905 revolution. If you have read one of the few books in English on the subject you will without a doubt be disappointed. I would recommend following the film with the recent book "Red Mutiny," by Neil Bascomb, this will put the film in greater context for historical purposes.
For film studies, "Battleship Potemkin" can be analyzed in the realm of other silent greats like "The General," "Metropolis" and "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" among others.
Eisenstein's masterpiece ranks with the best international films of the day, but I prefer the simplicity of American silent films overall.
A deep and interesting film that is required viewing for the "film snob" in your home or family.
A Classic.......2007-06-19
My first (and until now only) encounter with this film was in a high school film studies elective I took. The teacher showed the scene of the massacre on the Odessa stairs, and the baby carriage, and then showed us clips from various other movies that had imitated it.
In the years since I've always been glad I knew that little piece of film trivia, because it does pop up every now and again, everywhere from the Naked Gun movies to the most recent Star Wars film.
And that one scene alone probably makes this movie worth watching, if for no other reason than to be able to catch the various references to it in other films, and then pat yourself on the back for what a cultured person you are.
As for the rest of the movie...
I'd love to say that it was actually really interesting once you get into it, but lets face it, this is a silent film made for a generation with longer attention spans and lower expectations. I'd be lying if I said there weren't any parts I yawned through. However once the action does get started, it is surprising intense, especially given how old this film is.
This movie is also one of the first examples of film propaganda, and so is interesting in that respect as well. Obviously as one of the first attempts it's not perfect, and hits you over the head a little bit too hard. (The art of good propaganda is not letting the audience realize they're being propagandized). My favorite is the over the top portrayal of the evil priest.
Then again, I can think of several Hollywood movies that lack subtlety. Maybe we only notice how ridiculous this movie is because it is old and because it's communist.
I suppose it's probably pointless to debate the moral qualities of this movie because it is now nothing more than an historical oddity. It is old, the techniques it employees are no longer effective on the modern audience, and the regime that created it no longer exists.
And yet, perhaps because of my protestant upbringing, I still have the urge to examine this film and classify it as either good or bad.
Obviously this film is tainted by its association with Stalin, but the actual events portrayed in the film (the failed 1905 Russian Revolution) are safely removed from the evils of the Bolshevik regime. Can a person with progressive politics watch this movie and simply appreciate the story about soldiers who refused to open fire on the people when ordered, and instead joined in a popular uprising? This is, after all, not only the story of the Russian Revolution, but Europe in 1848, Paris in 1871, and the German Revolution in 1918.
The various historical liberties the film takes makes it slightly harder to defend. Apparently there was no actual massacre on the Odessa steps, although there were a few demonstrators killed in scuffles with the army. And the circumstances of the Potemkin mutiny are also in debate.
Battleship Potemkin.......2007-06-18
Oppressed by their commanding officers, the enlisted crewmen of the Battleship Potemkin stage a mutinous revolt in 1905 Russia, led by charismatic young sailor Vokulinchuk (Antonov). When he is killed during the violent skirmish that results, the citizens of port town Odessa join the struggle against the Czarist regime.
Eisenstein's exhilarating, world-renowned masterpiece re-creates the ill-starred 1905 Russian Revolution that presaged the Bolshevik uprising twelve years later. Celebrated for its brilliant rapid-cut montage techniques, "Potemkin" is a rousing film of great emotional and symbolic richness whose visual sweep and driving energy were unparalleled at the time. The famous Odessa Steps sequence, in which a baby carriage goes careening down stairs as the Cossacks massacre rebellious townsfolk, has been imitated many times, most recently in "The Untouchables." For 69 minutes of pure, visceral cinema, board Battleship Potemkin.

Audrey Hepburn plays a Parisienne whose husband is murdered and who finds she is being followed by four men seeking the fortune her late spouse had hidden away. Cary Grant is the stranger who comes to her aid, but his real motives aren't entirely clear--could he even be the killer? The 1963 film is directed by Stanley Donen, but it has been called "Hitchcockian" for good reason: the possible duplicities between lovers, the unspoken agendas between a man and woman sharing secrets. Charade is nowhere as significant as a Hitchcock film, but suspense-wise it holds its own; and Donen's glossy production lends itself to the welcome experience of stargazing. One wants Cary Grant to be Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn to be no one but Audrey Hepburn in a Hollywood product such as this, and they certainly don't let us down. --Tom Keogh
Description
Hepburn meets Grant on a skiing trip in the Alps. When she returns home to Paris, she finds her apartment ransacked, her husband dead and crooks searching for a fortune they're convinced she's hiding. As she avoids the sinister group, she becomes fond of Grant who comes to her aid. One by one, each gang member is murdered, making it more difficult for her to distinguish the good guys from the bad ones.

Top ten movie.......2007-09-08
Fantastic movie and wanted to add it to my collection but was sent a bad copy- disk doesn't work. Returning it for a new one.
Do you know what's wrong with you? NOTHING!.......2007-09-06
The same can be said for this movie. With Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant to grace your screen, what could possibly go wrong? I think this is one of Audrey's most underrated film! This is a classic! And classics need to be left alone. (have you watched The Truth About Charlie, the remake? if you haven't, don't bother trying)
I highly recommend this movie!
great film with a hiccup.......2007-08-31
This is a great classic film, and I would give it a higher rating if if weren't for the bad recording to disc. The picture transfer is great but in two separate places it stops for a second, then jumps a few seconds. If thinking about getting this think again. I have had two copies and both skipped, both were returned to the retailer.
A GREAT CLASSIC .......2007-06-27
Charade is a great classic for any age group. Picture quality was excellent. Whenever you have Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn, George Kelly, James Coburn and Walter Matthau in the same movie how can you go wrong. I rate this movie 10 stars.
Charade.......2007-06-27
This Hitchcock homage provides a last glimpse of Cary as leading man. At sixty, the actor still brings off his trademark persona superbly. Hepburn is also in top form as the put-upon damsel in distress. Deftly combining mystery, romance, and humor, director Donen creates a chic, sophisticated mood via gorgeous Paris locations and a smooth Mancini score. The villains are mean enough to be taken seriously, but exhibit enough idiosyncrasies to seem human (Coburn has particular fun as Tex). As top-drawer entertainment, "Charade" is the real thing.
