5 out of 5 stars THE FINEST TRAINING VIDEO.......2007-05-15

Excellent training product. Well-organized, easy to use, top training material. My seven year-old son and I watch it together and then go out to practice. He's already learned some of the moves and used them to impress the coach of a traveling team. Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars So So.......2007-04-11

Reasonable review of various moves, but some of the demonstrations were much too basic, and did not show the deception needed to make the moves work. If fact, some of the "cut" moves looked very lazy in the demonstration. My youth team was not very impressed. A few more demonstraions by either professional players or in-game shots would have been very helpful in showing how to "sell" the moves. I think this is ok for youth coaches, but not for the players themselves.

3 out of 5 stars kumi-what?.......2007-06-22

Don't get this confused with Bloodsport folks. Instead of being a movie about a martial arts tournament feauturing a love story, this is a love story featuring a martial arts tournament. There is no indication of this from either the cover art of this dvd or the trailer itself. While the tournament is enjoyable and there is decent fight action, the love story is not strong enough to support the rest of the film.

The main charcacter is a yougn man named Bond, a student of both summer classes and martial arts in his community gym. He quickly shows a love interest for his school teacher, who looks young enough to be a student too, who in turn quickly shows an interest towrds him, though a bit weird. Not only is she his teacher, but comes off as someone who doesn'e even act one bit like a teacher, but more like a helpless-innocent schoolgirl. How ironic. The English dubbing only allows the love story to suffer even more, as if the cheesiness and slow-pacing involved weren't bad enough.

If you can wait 50 minutes of the film, the Kumite finally begins. Kumite is actually designated as the English title for this movie. The actual tournament is known as Star Runner. While it is a brutal contest of fighters from around the globe, the bruatilty is far less than the Bloodsport series and the fights themselves are in an actual ring rather than a platform. The flashy lights and screaming audience sets the stage well to get you pumped for the fights, and so does the introduction to all the fighters appearing in the tournament. Most of the fights are short, but there are a few better and longer ones as the tournament progresses. The villainous fighter of the tournament - called Tank - is convincing and does a great job looking and being the bad guy. He's nothing like Chong Li from Bloodsport, but I could like him as easily as Demon and Beast from Bloodsport's 2 & 3.

The final fight scene of the movie is 15 minutes in length. Before you get too excited, I stress the word scene. While Bond and Tank go at it round after round and we get to see obviously the best fight in the movie, there are lots of flashback scenes (cheesy as always) and some extended time in between rounds. I would guess there is still a good 7 minutes of straight solid action though. The ending gets a little unpredictable, for a change, but is questionable. It leaves you with the feeling of "I'm not sure if it feels right".

Ok, so if you are expecting an all-out Kumite, you have to wait for 2/3 of the film to pass. Even then, its far less fighting than the first 3 Bloodsport movies, but I'd say more than #4 (which stank by the way). If you don't mind a huge love story too, then you might enjoy this. Expect much cheesiness and gosh-awful dubbing - the 2 may just ruin the romance, even if it is an unusual one. 4 stars for the fights, 2 for the rest - 3 overall.

2 out of 5 stars Really disappointing film.......2007-06-20

I am a huge Vanness Wu fan. I watch everything he does no matter how bad because I see him as a star with a ton of potential. However, I cannot make any allowances for this steamer. Everything is horrible from the poor script, bad acting, poorly choreographed fight scenes and the terrible dubbing of the voice overs. The only strong point and the only thing that allowed me to watch the entire thing was the fact that Vanness is the hottest guy on the planet. So, unless you just want to watch V-Dub with the sound down I really do not recommend this movie at all.

3 out of 5 stars jma's rambles- The Kumite.......2007-04-12

I must say I do agree with most of the reviews given to this film already. The film felt a little scrambled and maybe a little to 'rushed' in certain areas. The romance in this was annoying. It just seemed cheesy and - as mentioned before - rushed. Only to drop and become the typical "I want but I don't want but I can't do this without seeing you' sort of film. Yea, all that. Very predictable.

It was interesting to see Bond come into his own with his skills, but nothing out of the ordinary. However, I still don't think that he had a chance against the champion Tank and I suppose in the end it showed that - which was surprising. In modern cinema, it matters very little how big or good you are at what you're doing. As long as you're the good guy, you're set. Only I didn't really feel like there was a bad guy in this film. In fact, I found my curiosity turning more towards the mysterious Tank who so obviously had some demons of his own.

Tank was a great fighter in this and wasn't really a bad guy at all, in my opinion. I don't know what the writers and director were trying to portray him as, but a villian he was not. He was too noble, too fair and too damn good looking to be bad. Besides, he seemed to have issues with his brother. He was the one I wanted to know more about, the only one that really caught my interest.

The girl was annoying. So unsure, but so naiive. She was an adultress for god's sake! How 'innocent' can you be? I felt like she was leading Bond on only to pull her facade back up and push him away. Like I said... annoying. Not to mention she was not very pretty to play the role of 'hot teacher'.

The ending of the fight was both irritating and strangely satisfying. One part of me wanted to know more about the match between Tank and Bond. While the other thought it was a fitting ending after Tank was so noble. I didn't know which one I wanted to win and so I wasn't disappointed either way.

But then when we move from the last fight to the very ending, well, let's just say that it leaves much to be desired.

2 out of 5 stars Kumite: Less Martial Arts More Soap Opera.......2007-02-05

THE KUMITE is very nearly unique is the martial arts genre. It bills itself as a kumite film, sort of like a Jean Claude Van Damme in KICKBOXER. However, from the very first reel to the last, martial arts takes a back seat to some very superficial soap opera melodrama. This is not necessarily a bad thing either; even well-done soaps have their charm. Since this film led the viewer to expect a genuine kumite plot, it takes a while for one even to determine whether one wishes to accept what is mostly the thin tale of a younger high school male student (Bond)carrying on with his twenty something pretty female teacher (Kim). After the first five minutes I decided that I would not be seeing any serious martial arts issues taking the forefront. The incipient love affair between Bond and Kim was the dramatic center of the film. The entire kumite sequences could have been eliminated and the result might have left the director with more time to flesh out the potentially interesting complications of thwarted romance. Yet, since this was billed as a kumite, it would have required more directorial skill than was apparent to meld the divergent plots into a seamless entity. The conflict between the lovers and the kumite was a bad fit, mostly because a kumite requires a menacing villain. Van Damme had his in Tong Po. Bond did not have his in Tank, a fighter who was not much different ethically speaking from Bond. Tank tries mightily to seem menacing, but he is too handsome and at the film's closing too noble to emerge as the Bad Guy. Bond as the film's center did not impress me as being much more than a good looking male model whose modest martial arts skills are only slightly surpassed by his acting ability. Then there is Kim, who spends most of the film trying to decide whether she wants Bond or a previous lover who has emerged from her past to claim her after a lapse of several years. The personal interactions among the lovers, the trainers, and even between Bond and Tank have their moments, but when I saw the fight sequences, they did not show anyone as possessing the needed skills to win a kumite. The ultimate judgment on THE KUMITE is that it suffers from not having a true sense of direction or identity. You may pass on this one.

1 out of 5 stars This movie is terrible!!!.......2007-02-04

I had heard about this movie some time in 2006 and decided to pick it up. When I saw the cover, I said to myself "Oh man this movie is gonna kick some serious a**!" People don't let looks deceive you, this movie not only deserves a big fat "0" but it almost seems as if they made it bad on purpose. I thought I was watching a drama instead of a martial arts movie. No disrespect intended but this movie looks like it was made for women, the way how there is almost little to no Martial Arts being done, to the way that the fighters are basically covered in sweat the first few seconds of the fight made me really think about who the target audience is. Oh and don't get me started on that horrible acting. "BOND, BOND!!!" Lady shut the hell up!! I was actually rooting for the dudes that were going against
him, just too terrible for words. LAST WARNING, DO NOT BUY OR RENT THIS MOVIE. You will be sorry if you do.

5 out of 5 stars Murder, stolen diamonds, terrorism and fugitives on the run.......2007-03-18

When anti-apartheid activist Shack Twala (Sidney Poitier) is freed from prison after being acquitted on a charge of terrorism, he soon gets into trouble with the police who intend that his freedom is going to be very short lived.

In fact they intend that also will be very short lived too. Persuaded by his girlfriend who is a lawyer, British engineer Keogh (Michael Caine) helps Twala flee from a ruthless government official (Nicol Williamson) who is hell bent on Twala's distruction, and very soon both men become fugitives from the law.

Handcuffed together the men who at first dislike each other intensely, form a strong bond of friendship based on mutual respect and a desire to survive their ordeal.

Persis Khambatta of Star Trek the Movie fame plays the love interest for Twala, and there are more twists in the tale of this movie than you can shake a stick at.

Quite brutal at times, I flinched at the scene were Keogh is beaten during a brutal interogation, along with the murder of the sympathetic Scottish farmer who helps the fugititives also gives the film a sense of stark realism, portraying a time in which South Africa could get away with murder.

A surprisingly good film which has dated reasonably well, its not too cliched, the photography is cxcellent, it doesn't have a happy ending, and we are treated to early performances from the likes of Rutger Hauer and Saeed Jaffrey.

A stonking good film for a pop-corn and soda night in.

3 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, mostly forgotten thriller from 70's.......2004-11-19

      Title: "The Wilby Conspiracy"
      Released: 1975
      Rated: PG
Running Time:1 hour and 41 minutes
      Directed by: Ralph Nelson
      Starring: Sidney Poitier-as Shack Twala
      Michael Caine-as Jim Keogh
      Nicol Williamson-as Major Horn
      Prunella Gee-as Rina van Niekirk
      Rutger Hauer-as Blane
Rijk de Gooyer- as van Heerden

This is a good little movie about Poitier and Caine fleeing South African police while being tailed by South African State Security Bureau agents (Williamson and Gooyer). The film begins with Poitier being released from prison (having just served 10 years for political activism against the apartheid government) through the efforts of his lawyer (Gee)after a hearing in the South African Supreme Court in Capetown. Immediately following his release, Poitier, Gee and Caine-who plays Gee's boyfriend, a British mining engineer-decide to go to her office to celebrate. En route, they are stopped at a police checkpoint and Poitier is assaulted by the two officers. Gee comes to his aid and is in turn assaulted, which leads Caine to become involved. The policemen are seriously injured and Poitier and Caine decide to head for a safehaven in Johannesberg, 900 miles away.
Little do the duo know that Poitier's release and subsequent ease in evading the police are the result of the Security Bureau's intervention. It seems that the Bureau want to follow Poitier in the hopes that he will lead them to Wilby, the leader of the anti-apartheid forces. What follows is an entertaining chase across South Africa and a related quest for missing diamonds which all lead to a violent finale (despite its PG rating).
Poitier and Caine are great in the primary roles. They have to rely on each other, while not exactly always getting along. The movie is further helped by a strong supporting cast, including Gee and Williamson (in a standout performance as the lead Bureau agent following the fugitives). Rutger Hauer has a small role as Gee's estranged bush pilot husband.
The movie, which is based on the novel of the same name by Peter Driscoll, was filmed in Kenya and at Pinewood Studios in England. I recommend this film to fans of Poitier and Caine, as well as anyone looking for a good 1970's thriller/action movie.

2 out of 5 stars Caine or Poitier enthusiasts may see something more here.......2004-02-09

Based on Peter Driscoll's 1972 novel, this film is set in apartheid 1970-ish South Africa during the origins of anti-apartheid groups like the Black Congress movement, seeking to overthrow the government to achieve self-determination for the country's 18 million blacks (versus 3 million ruling whites).

One always has to wonder about films where the viewpoint is so one-sided with few shades of grey. This film treads a fine line indeed between politically correct propaganda and a wheels-within-wheels conspiracy thriller. This reviewer's initial fears that the propaganda element would overwhelm other considerations diminished when the plot took some unexpected twists and ended with a flourish.

Sidney Poitier is moderately successful in his characterization of a black who has been subdued and imprisoned by the contemptuous and repressive apartheid regime. Years of forced subservience (and his survival of them) have made his external persona almost stoic. Yet behind this apparent stoicism, he seethes with hatred and works for the total destruction of the apartheid system. Opening the film, the authorities mysteriously release him from prison. The mystery compounds when the authorities fail to re-arrest him despite any number of infractions (trumped-up or otherwise), choosing rather to follow him.

A young Michael Caine plays - Michael Caine, dragged in by accident for the ride and implicated by events. The other performances are routine excepting Major Horn (Nicol Williamson) and his side-kick Van Heerden (Ryl De Gooyer), as the arrogant, menacing and sadistic pursuing agents from the Bureau of State Security. These two never miss an opportunity to threaten and denigrate those who either cross their path or try to frustrate their curious agenda. Despite their limited screen time, Wiliamson and De Gooyer nevertheless bring something extra to their portrayals.

The original 1974 cinematography was apparently quite good, as the (Kenya) scenery is beautiful. The DVD picture is sufficient for enjoying the film; but purists will notice that it is fuzzy and the colors are washed out, so no re-mastering or other significant picture restoration was attempted. Sound is in the same category. The DVD keep case is fine. Be advised the film is mostly for Caine or Poitier collectors. For others it is little more than a couple hours' entertainment.

4 out of 5 stars Wilby Conspiracy - Only Too True!!.......2001-04-12

Regretfully, the actions depicted by the South African secret police in the Wilby Conspiracy were only too true.

Via overt racist laws and covert actions, they were given a free hand to maintain the racist status quo and kill whoever tried to stop them, which several have admitted to having done.

      4 out of 5 stars One Of the Best Pre-80's Anti-Appartheid Film!!.......1999-10-22

It amazes me that so little attention has been paid to this witty adventure-drama. Created and made long before anti-apartheid struggle bacame "vogue" in the mainstream culture in mid-80's, it was rare insight that gave us the sinister faces of the dreaded South African sercret service, the "BOSS". Remember this was made long before "New South Africa". Long before the release of Nelson Mandela. Before Soweto and Biko murder!!

1 out of 5 stars This is review of the PRODUCT, not of the MOVIE.......2007-08-23

I was greatly disappointed, because the movie that I got recorded on the DVD was completely different then "The Martial Arts of Shaolin" although title printed on the box and disk itself was correct. I returned first DVD and got another one. But again it was wrong movie. This way I haven't finally got the movie that I wanted to buy at all :(

2 out of 5 stars North and South Shaolin.......2006-12-02

Now Amazon has reviews for the movie that I am reviewing-'North and South Shaolin' and a Jet Li Shaolin Temple movie. Now I can guarantee you that the 3 Jet Li 'Shaolin Temple' movies are great but this one is kind of a dud. I don't know why Amazon thinks these are the same movies but they ARE NOT.

Cassanova Wong stars as a young monk who has to take down the majorly underused kung fu superstar Eagle Han. Sadly Eagle is in Godfrey Ho form and the action director does not know how to use him properly. Cassanova on the other hand looks superb but does not get in near enough fighting. While the choreography is average at best, they speed up the film so much we can hardly see what the hell is going on in the fights.

The story is not really worth going over. Eagle Han(Han Ying) plays your standard government bad guy.

2 things that really stood out to me was the great training sequence with bamboo that Cassanova has and in the final fight you will see a couple of short action scenes that Donnie Yen ripped off for 'Legend of the Wolf'. Then this movie rips off that sweet kick that Cassanova does in the finale of 'Warriors Two'. Sadly the final fight is not great but the last 12 minutes are still worth a watch for any kung fu fan.

Picture quality from Video Asia is not very good but it is LETTERBOXED!!!!

      4 out of 5 stars the best.......2003-04-19

This is the best one out of all them, in the series. I'd give this 5 stars but the reason is that you can barely see the subtitles. But its a must see movie, i sorta understood anyway even though i could barely see the subtitles.

      5 out of 5 stars Absolutely disagree!!.......2003-01-13

It's surprising that more people like Shaolin Temple than Martial Arts of Shaolin, aka The North and South Shaolin. But from my point of view, this movie reflects the young Jet Li's best characteristics. Everyone acts so naturally and beautifully in the movie. There is no other Jet Li's movie which is of such a high spirit--intrinsically funny yet simple!!

      4 out of 5 stars Agreement.......2002-06-25

I agree about the subtitles being cut off and the quality poor but the VHS version is basically the same. In fact, on the VHS version, the movie cut to black immediately after the last bad guy gets killed off. No credits, no "THE END", nothing. This DVD is indeed for die-hard Jet Li fans because his fighting skills are quite good in it especially when he fights his way out of a jam filmed on the real "Great Wall of China".

5 out of 5 stars Stacie Randall kicks butt!.......2006-01-26

The movie explodes with action The redheaded Harley (Stacie Randall) is a sexy but lethal special agent seeking justice against the mob and a former lover. She uses whatever force necessary to bring the bad guys down even turning her body into a deadly weapon-which in turn unveils some pretty explosive and impressive fighting scenes. Stacie Randall's martial art skills are very believable in this flick, and in some cases better than Thomas Ian Griffith from the first movie. The acting is a bit campy and the plot a bit shallow but well worth the buy to watch the beautiful redheaded vixen Ms Randall knock the bad guys out with one karate kick after another!

      Description

After years of domestic abuse, Patty (Erika Eleniak), finds an outlet for her anger in the ring of a community boxing club. She's spotted by the club fight promoter Fred (John Doman) and one of his round-club gals, June (Aunjanue Ellis). With the help of a trainer, former hopeful Tommy (James Colby), she begins to learn how to box and gain self-esteem. Tommy sees Patty's rage and tries to help her channel it in the ring. Patty learns a valuable lesson-the difference between fighting and boxing. When you fight, you lose. When you box, you win! As Patty's talents grow stronger so does her relationship with Tommy. In the end, Patty earns the self-confidence to stand up for what she believes in, the power to take control of her life and make it her own.

3 out of 5 stars Better than most low budget films.......2004-11-25

You can see that this film was made with a bare-minimum budget but it is entertaining nonetheless. A physically abused woman tries to avoid her "loseeeer" boyfriend and ends up on the street with no place to go. A boxing promoter and another woman feel sorry for her situation and offer her $50 to look "pretty" and hold up round cards at a local boxing tournament.

After the tournament, the three go to a bar but the woman gets bored and leaves asking the promoter's chauffer to take her home. The chauffer was one of the fighters at the tournament and she strikes up a conversation with him and learns that he teaches some kids how to box when he is not driving.

With all the anger in her because of her boyfriend, she shows up at the boxer's gym asking for lessons. He finally agrees and the woman is determined to learn how to fight to get back at her boyfriend. Anger is her inspiration and allows her to get through the vigorous training.

Through sheer luck she is able to win her first match and also to stand up to her ex-boyfriend. Obviously a romance develops between her and her boxing coach, which later impedes on their professional relationship.

If you take the movie for what it is you will be surprised at what the director was able to do on so limited a budget. I give it a little bit better than 3 stars.

2 out of 5 stars Dreary, pointless little film.......2004-06-19

I purchased this film because of the misleading cover art. I mean, it stars former Baywatch babe Erika Eleniak, and she's lookin' pretty hot and (...)on the cover. The scene depicted is actually in the movie - for about 5 seconds. It's part of a montage. Whoever did the wardrobe for this movie apparently went to the local Goodwill and cleaned out the "free" bin. Eleniak wears crummy looking sweats throughout the movie, about as far from (...)as they could make her. Thanks moviemakers - thanks for the intentionally deceptive cover.

If you're thinking this is like a female Rocky movie, forget it. It would be like Rocky if Rocky didn't have the climactic fight at the end, but instead he just walked up to Apollo Creed and smarted off to him, and then the credits rolled.

Even as a Lifetime movie of the week, this thing is weak. It's more like a Lifetime afternoon movie, broadcast shortly after lunch, on a Tuesday. The characters just aren't the least bit developed. They act like 99% of irresponsible teenagers would act if put in the same situations, but these people are adults, which makes them come off as a bunch of losers. Eleniak is in what we're supposed to assume is an abusive relationship, but instead of getting a job and getting her own place, she gets a hobby. She makes a new friend, and uses her place as a crash pad when she doesn't feel like going home. Although her friend is really the only likable character in the film, the whole friendship goes nowhere and really serves no purpose except to pad out the screen time. She's also got a boxing coach, and his gym is going bankrupt. He could save it with his new Baywatch boxer, but he screws that up. Loser. Eleniak gets it on with him, and we get a montage that encompasses her entire amateur boxing career. One is left with the impression that she's about ready for her second amateur fight, but instead she's turning pro. So much for this being a boxing movie. So much for it being a romantic movie, because that goes absolutely nowhere. So much for it being a drama, because it ends just when one would think the last act should be starting.

Just a dreary and dull little waste. It can't decide what it wants to be, so it apportions equal time to each subplot. Sort of a little bit of everything and not much of anything. It's not Eleniak's fault - this script is hopeless and the director was utterly clueless.

4 out of 5 stars Thinking outside the box.......2003-05-08

Before I first saw this movie I was expecting a Lifetime channel movie
of the week, but it turned out to be a little better than that. In fact
I thought it had a hint of independent movieness about it or it could have
been the small budget. Maybe it was both. Kind of a quiet movie, small
cast, and urban Detroit setting. Erika portrays a woman, Patty, caught
up in an abusive relationship and struggles to find her way out of it.
Hooking up with a Tommy, a would-be amateur boxer who also runs a boxing
gym, Patty asks him to help train her. Her reasoning? Maybe to take out
her frustrations over being defenseless and punched out by her boyfriend
or to somehow seek her own independence. Patty's boxing interest takes
off and although becomes a novelty at first, through the magic of
film she ends up in the championship bout of the year.

The chemistry between the Tommy and Patty was nice and restrained at first
to allow the plot to unfold before the fireworks go off between them. James
Colby was a good find for this movie and thought he had boxing and all the
mythology about it at the right temperature for this movie which wasn't about
boxing in my opinion. Not about what they could get out of boxing, but what
boxing would make of them - stronger in life inside and outside the ring
hopefully. Peripheral characters include the opportunistic boxing promoter, a sympathetic
girlfriend and the desperate loser boyfriend all of whom put in good performances in their roles.

I like that Erika tried to pick an atypical movie project that stretches her
talent and this one does it. Never would have expected her to portray a reasonable
fascimile of a boxer, but she does pull it off. She looks really cut in this
movie and although a lot of the boxing was sloppy and wild, in the climatic
Rocky fight against a really buff opponent (professional maybe?) she looked
like she had done some good training for this movie. Only nit-picky thing I
had was I wished they hadn't beauty groomed her to be so good looking in this
movie (maybe it's just her natural beauty and she can't help it!), but a
dress-down like Cameron Diaz in "Being John Malkovich" where she was so grungy
and unrecognizable would have made the character more sympathetic and empowering
when she succeeds. And the most important thing - was there nudity? Well...
if I had directed there would have been the quintessential shower scene, but alas
they didn't ask me. She does have a brief nude scene from the side in a love
scene with James Colby where I was still wowed with her hot bod.
Not much stuff on the dvd except audio setup and chapter selections, actor
commentary or making of the movie would have been nice to see though. Another good
Erika movie to see is A Pyromanic's Love Story with a strong performances by
      John Leguizamo and Sadie Frost.

2 out of 5 stars This is another "Knockout" movie...........2002-08-04

..as in similar to the movie "Knockout" and not really a great boxing movie. It's more of a cute girl doing boxing. Erika Eleniak looks to be in great shape for the movie. It's too bad the script is really boring that you can't get more into it. Even with Erika in great shape, she's no boxer which becomes quite apparent during her training and fight sequences. Sloppy, sloppy, sloppy. As always, they choose a real female boxer as an opponent but don't spend enough time training the star to complement the adversary. About the only good refreshing thing about this movie was the coach and his gym. It was interesting to see a young coach and his bviews about boxing and training. Don't know if that's enough to carry this movie for some. It wasn't for me. Nope, definitely can't recommend this movie unless it goes to deep discount, and you're just bored at 12 AM.

      5 out of 5 stars non-stop laughing!.......2006-02-18

I dont know what those other people were talking about. I dont know how many times Ive seen it, but I love watching it. Everytime I play it for a group of different people(many different races), because Im in the military, they're in tears cracking up! NOBODY Ive played this for thinks it's boring. FUBU needs to definately come out with a part 2!!! There should be ones in different cities. Im suprised more DVDs like this arent out!

      3 out of 5 stars worth watching.......2005-12-14

It did get a little dry and generic. Some of the comics ran out of material and I didn't necessarily agree with the matchups, but one of the comedians was just hilarious and the extras made it funny enough to be worthwhile.

      3 out of 5 stars Has It's moments.......2005-05-08

For the most part Street Snaps is an entertaining dvd which can be very funny in the begining but tends to get repetetive and corny towards the end. The first half hour alone is worth the price of admission but starts to wear thin towards the end, if the second half was as funny as the first, then i would have givin it 5 stars but it's still worth a look.
