Director Diane Keaton brings a tender touch to Wildflower, a Lifetime cable-TV movie showcasing early-career excellence from Reese Witherspoon and Patricia Arquette. Witherspoon's big-screen debut in The Man in the Moon had premiered shortly before this movie's original broadcast in 1991, and a year earlier, Arquette had starred in a Keaton-directed CBS Schoolbreak Special, The Boy with the Crazy Brother. These rising talents are well served by Sara Flanigan's teleplay, closely adapted from her popular juvenile novel Alice. Set in the mid-1930s, the story follows two compassionate teens (Witherspoon, William McNamara) who discover and essentially adopt a partially deaf epileptic (Arquette) who'd been locked away by her psychotically abusive father. Beau Bridges and Susan Blakely provide different parental perspectives, and while Keaton doesn't always avoid Flanigan's tear-jerking sentiment, she handles it with delicate grace. Aiding her are a gifted cast and the fine cinematography of Janusz Kaminski, who would soon begin an enduring collaboration with Steven Spielberg. --Jeff Shannon

A movie to enjoy over and over.......2007-08-14

This is one of the few movies that I simply have to own so I can watch it
again and again. I seen it on TV years ago but I could not find it
anywhere because at the time it was out of print.
I have just did a search and found
it on DVD. FANTASTIC! Ordered it! Ms. Arquette is soooo wonderful in this
film I actually thought she must be really deaf.I believe this film would
be great for anyone to see from young to old. I love Reese Whiterspoon in
anything and she is so adorable. This movie should have won many awards.

I have always thought of Diane Keaton as one of the best actresses out there, but her talents are also in directing. The movie was touching... and amazing performances by Reese Withersoon, Beau Bridges and Patricia Arquette. I highly recommend this movie. I bought the movie here on Amazon because it is not at any of the video stores in my area... what a shame.

I first saw this movie when I was about twelve years old and all I remember thinking was how brave Alice was. This is the type of movie that can really teach you something about never giving up on hope. I highly recommend WILDFLOWER to everyone and anyone, even kids. I would give ten stars if amazon allowed me to but since they don't go that high I will give my highest rating of five!

This movie is so dramatic and moving. The rollercoaster of emotions that you experience while watching this film is AMAZING!
My children 6 and 4 learned so much about lifes cruelties and blessings. They also learned about peoples differences and sharing them NOT hurting them. This movie just WOW's me every time. It is an AMERICAN CLASSIC in my book.

I guess she says at the beginnning that this is the second to last concert on the Wildflower Tour and it shows. She just looks tired and like she just wants to get the concert over. I LOVE Sheryl Crow and have all her albums and all her videos but this one was a disappointment. The Wildflower album, although I really like it, just isn't really suited for any kind of high energy concert like you might expect from Sheryl. If you really want to see a great video, get her music video DVD. It is absolutely amazing quality but, of course, isn't live. I bought a bunch of those and give it away to my friends along with the Eagles Farewell Tour 1 DVD's (of course, puchased on Amazon). Overall, I would not recommend this one unless you are a die hard Sheryl fan and must have everything.

Great Concert.......2006-12-06

I have Sheryl Crow's Soundstage appearance TiVo'ed and this seems to be that concert plus about 7 songs. It's really great and would recommend it. Although, my favorite Sheryl DVD remains C'Mon America from 2003. Wildflower is a great winter cd. And Sheryl, well she's the cat's pajamas, as far as I can tell. I just wish she would have performed Anything But Down. I saw her tour this summer with John Mayer and the live version of that song rocked the house.

Nice package. Not as good as Judy Live At Wolf Trap. Judy carries the show. However, at the end of the concert all four sing a few songs together. They blend their voices well and it is a very enjoyable conclusion to the concert.

Amazing, amazing, amazing!.......2004-11-07

Amazing grace, indeed! This is an incredible show with stellar performances by some of the finest and, in my opinion, most under-rated singers of the past century. Judy Collins is a wonderful singer and performer and she lends class and grace to every song she sings. The version here of "In My Life," sung with the other guest artists, is incredible. In "City of New Orleans," although Judy had a rousing version on her album entitled "JUDITH" -- this time she lets Arlo take it away and sing his own rendition while offering a beautiful supporting voice -- she doesn't try to one-up him and impose her version on him. Eric Anderson's "Thirsty Boots" brings tears to my eyes, and to hear Judy and Eric sing it together is thrilling. At times, the guest stars' performances get a little draggy, but whenever Judy is on, the stage glows. A magical evening -- and dvd! I highly recommend it!

This DVD captures a live concert of the Judy Collins Wildflowers Festival recorded in San Diego, June 30, 2002. Judy and her co-stars Arlo Guthrie, Eric Anderson, and Tom Rush shine in this rich performance of folk classics, including City of New Orleans, Amazing Grace, The Circle, In My Life, and Both Sides Now. Each singer performs a solo set, and all four join in a rousing encore. Collins sings her own Home Before Dark and Open the Door, as well as standards such as Send in the Clowns. Each provides a sparkling performance and the four blend voices beautifully in the encores. Production values are terrific. An unforgettable gathering of four of America's best loved folk singers of the past 40 years. Not to be missed.

this concert video shot during collin's last tour provides a nice overview of the legendary's folk/art singer's career. the guests: arlo guthrie, eric anderson and tom rush play pleasant short sets as well as join judy for the encores. it all looks great, the production values are fine. the second dvd of extras is largely extraneous. this dvd gets docked one star as collins has coasted on her history here and the dvd does little in the way of conveying what has made collin's such a trailblazing artist all these years. still, a nice package.

Hilarious.......2003-05-24

This one almost falls into the it's-so-bad-it's-good category. Awful, cliched script, hideous acting, obnoxious attempts at nudity and sex, a leading man who gets squeaky-voiced during precarious moments, charmless, silicone-breasted lesbian bimbos, ridiculous plot twists - all of this done with a straight face, which is what makes it so awfully funny. Recommended to those with a taste for bad cinema and the sense of humor to enjoy it.

Surprising Fun.......2001-11-14

I thought I'd hate it, but got caught up in it. The girls were not only beautiful, but they did a great job acting. Special kudos to the dark haired asian chick with long hair, and the blonde that's taking over the whole 'family business'.

Yes, it's campy and dramatic but I had a lot of fun with it. I strongly recommend it.

WILD THING IN THE WOODS.......2001-04-08

I started watching this movie with some reservations. Another boring erotic thriller would pass before my tired eyes. Then the strangest thing happened . . . I actually started to find myself ensnared in the various double crosses occuring onscreen. I soon also found myself wondering who the traitor was amongst the family -- I gussed wrong and I'm usually pretty good at guessing these things. Anyways, to sum it up, WILDFLOWER is a crafty erotic thriller -- with plenty of both.

Unfortunately, the last few minutes (where the film should have ended) become both confusing and unlikely. Still, if you feel like watching a superior erotic thriller, WILDFLOWER should suit you just fine.

Survivor with naked women........2001-03-17

Wildflower really had potential to be the rare erotic thriller to work both as erotic and as a thriller but sadly it loses steam halfway through. The set up: rich heirs head out to the woods to settle some family fueds but are sabotagued by a sexy stranger. The dangerous liasons result in quite a body count (in both interpretations.) Sadly, the plot becomes ridiculous and smarmy by the end and Wildflower loses its smarts.

Rising young actress Clea Duvall stars in Wildflowers as Cally, a young woman who's grown up on a commune outside of San Francisco. Now 17, she finds herself drifting away from her father, who raised her alone after her mother abandoned them both. The supporting performances by Eric Roberts and Tomas Arana are carefully drawn, and the cinematography--especially scenes of the California seashore--are beautiful. Meandering but likeable coming of age movie.......2002-05-15

Wildflowers is about 17-year-old Cally's search for her past. She was raised on a commune by hippies in the 1960's (the movie is set in 1985), and now she lives with her father. She's been told little about her mother, except that she had to leave Cally and her father because she got in trouble for her political activities. Cally becomes convinced that the woman she meets in San Francisco (Daryl Hannah) is her mother, and she tries to become friends with the woman. As she learns more about the woman and her father, she also begins to understand herself better. The story is simple and straight forward, and the style and acting are extremely low-key. Although the movie is not great by any standards, it is fairly likeable. Look fast for a quick appearance by Blue's Traveller. Overall, a very average small-budget film.

One Of The Few.......2002-04-08

This movie is one of the few done about the Counterculture of the 60's that gives an accurate feeling both of some of the people of that era nearly 20 years later and of the era itself. Highly recommend it to anyone who wants to understand something of the 60's.

Daryl Hannah and Clea Duvall were beautifully cast in a good intentioned story...but the script was lacking and predictable.
The shots were dreamily executed...so I'm giving it 3 stars. If Eric Roberts weren't in it and I had to think a little more, I'd have given it 4.5 stars. Eric Roberts TRUELY gives me the creeps!
Buy this used...or don't buy it at all.

Life as we only wish it was...........2002-02-14

I just saw this movie last night and was captivated enough to stay up until midnight on a weekday. It was visually beautiful, so much so that it's almost a fantasy. People live on boats, have gorgeous furniture and willowy, gauzy clothing, hang out in coffee shops, read poems in an eclectic bookstore and don't seem to have real jobs, responsibilities or school. Clea DuVall is excellent but as a 17 year-old you would think her dad might be more worried when she stays out all night and doesn't come home for days. No one else mentioned that Eric Roberts (who is gorgeous and about 20+yrs. older than her) has an intimate encounter w/her - did this bother anyone else but me? This is one of those movies you get lost in because it's so wonderfully unrealistic and you dream about life being that carefree and beautiful...then the dog barks, the phone rings, your kids start fighting, etc. Why can't we all sleep on the ocean beach, hike in beautiful deserted pastures in CA, sleep with gorgeous older men, have a fascinating hip mom to get drunk with? It kind of left me unsatisfied with my existence, but that's another story...

A great introduction to mountain biking.......2003-11-10

Although my own biking has been limited to road riding...I found this introduction to mountain biking interesting, informative...and even inspiring. The video makes mountain biking far more accessible to the average weekend warrior than I had imagined...it does not necessarily have to be the "extreme sport" I envisioned. The segments on technique, bike selection and bike maintenance are all helpful and encouraging.

The producers have an affection for this sport and although the video is clearly directed toward women it will serve as an excellent introduction to anyone. The overall sense is that mountain biking is not only a healthy outdoor activity but a lot of fun as well.

A great way to get excited about mountain biking. Easy to learn tips for the beginner, female or male, from world class mountain biker, Sue Haywood. Will help you conquer your fear of riding off road. Laid back friendly feel of the participants lends a unique perspective not usually seen in training videos. Beautiful photography. DVD includes a lovely virtual tour of the southwest deserts in bloom set to music. The second item on the DVD is a well narrated story about the southwest desert phenomena of wildflower blooms. Focus is the Mohave Desert.
