If you've seen Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer, then you know the entire plot of Scary Movie. That's okay, though, because this is a parody, and it helps to know the story in order to be able to get the jokes. No, the biggest surprise here is not the story as much as the amount of full-frontal male nudity. Really, in addition to all the dick jokes (and the ass jokes and fart jokes), there's a couple of shots of the male member, one of which is erect and used as a weapon. Scary Movie somehow ended up with an R rating, which in a sense is groundbreaking; perhaps our ratings board is loosening up after all.

But is it funny? That's the most important question, and the answer to that is yes. In the vein of Airplane!, with a dash of the Farrelly brothers, Scary Movie keeps throwing jokes at you one after another. The law of averages says some of them have to hit, and enough of them do to keep the movie entertaining. Unlike the makers of Airplane!, however, the Wayans brothers aren't making this movie out of a love of the genre, and unlike the Farrelly brothers, they don't make fun of retarded people with any sort of respect, so the humor throughout feels a lot uglier. Still, there are enough funny scenes in Scary Movie to make the viewing experience worthwhile. Special credit must go to Lochlyn Munro as Greg, the over-the-top jock, who steals the movie up until the time he's gotta die.--Andy Spletzer

5 out of 5 stars side aching laughter.......2007-08-13

the first time i watched this movie...i could not stop laughing from the beginning. i came out with my side aching from laughing and my mouth hurting from grinning. i watch it the other day and eperiance the same reaction. this movie is a must see film for those who enjoy the wayan brothers and for those who watched 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' and 'Scream'. Watching this movie makes you laugh instead of scream when you do get around to wacthing these horror movies again. Get this movie you won't regret it!!

4 out of 5 stars What a difference a second viewing makes........2007-06-12

I erased my initial 3-star review because it wasn't totally fair. I watched this a second and third time, and I tell you, I'm almost ready to give this 5 stars, but I won't. The first time, I couldn't fully appreciate the crass humor, but I realize that it is a classic. But it's still a classic I'm unwilling to give 5 stars.

Along with the Wayans' brand of comedy, comes an unshakeable annoyance at some of their jokes because of their juvenility. Unlike White Chicks, the Wayans show no restraint with their toilet and sexual humor in Scary Movie. Why does every joke have to revolve around sex? Are the Wayans Brothers that sexually obsessed? All in all, it's a funny picture if you can abandon your decent sensibilities for a little while and just have fun. That's what I did, and I'll not hesitate to watch it again and again. Scary Movie is also the funniest in the 4 part series.

5 out of 5 stars funny as hell!!!.......2006-11-27

Horror mocking is awesome, espessially for horror fans who know whats going on.

5 out of 5 stars Scary Movie.......2006-08-19

4 out of 5 stars Pretty funny.......2006-08-17

All in all I found this film pretty funny but not as funny as Scary Movie 2. There was nothing wrong with it, I had no complaints but fans of the slasher flicks 'Scream" and "I Know What You Did Last Summer" will appreciate this film for the potential it holds. However I am not a fan of those movies so this doesn't hold as many thrills for me. I would recommend it for anyone who wants a good laugh. Regina Hall and Anna Faris definetly have a big future in the world of comedy as this movie will show. Plus the Wayans brothers add so much to this movie. However I'd warn against eating or drinking while watching this movie unless the viewer doesn't mind spewing said itens out their nose!

While hardly a spiritual upgrade of the slasher film, this high-concept teen body-count thriller drops hints of The Sixth Sense into the smart-aleck sensibility of Scream. Helmed by X-Files veteran James Wong, who cowrote the screenplay with longtime creative partner Glen Morgan, Final Destination is an often entertaining thriller marked by an unsettling sense of unease and scenes of eerie imagery. It suffers, however, from a schizophrenic tone and a frankly ludicrous premise. A high school Cassandra, Alex Browning (Devon Sawa of Idle Hands), wakes from a preflight nightmare and panics when he's convinced the plane is doomed. His ruckus bumps seven passengers from the Paris-bound plane, which immediately explodes into a fireball on takeoff, but fate hasn't finished with these lucky few and, one by one, death claims them. Wong brings such a funereal tone to these early scenes of survivor's guilt and inevitable doom that the already far-fetched film threatens to veer into unplanned absurdity. Thankfully, the tale loosens up with a playful morgue humor: one of the victims winds up the splattered punch line to a grim joke and elaborate Rube Goldbergesque chains of cause and effect become inspired spectacles of destruction. Final Destination is a pretty silly thriller when it takes itself seriously, and the filmmakers play fast and loose with their own rules of fate, but once they stick their tongues firmly in cheek, the film takes off with a screwy interpretation of the domino effect of doom. --Sean Axmaker

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good!.......2007-09-12

One day, while flipping through the channels on my tv, I caught a glimpse of Final Destination. Having worked in the electronics department in a big box store, I knew that the Final Destination movies were rather popular although I didn't know why. The storyline seemed silly to me and the actors turned me completely off from the movie. But when I watched a little more of the movie on tv, I was actually interested in it, and I ended up watching the rest of the film.

So what's this movie about? A high school kid named Alex is supposed to be going on a trip to Paris with some of his classmates. The problem is that he's having bad thoughts about his flight. He even has a nightmare that the plane is going to blow up upon takeoff. Upon waking up, he realizes that his fears and his nightmare seem awfully real. He, along with a few other classmates, get kicked off the plane when Alex panics and gets in a fight with another classmate. The twist? It turns out that his nightmare comes true-the plane blows up, killing everyone on board. The even bigger twist? Each of the surviving classmates are being killed one by one because they "tricked" death.

Let's talk about the positives first. Yes, the plot is pretty silly but the directors did a great job of keeping the audience entertained and the shock value high. The death scenes for the surviving classmates are creative and original and keep you at the edge of your seat. And unlike a lot of scary movies, the movie moves rather steadily with only a couple of slow spots here and there. Some parts are scary, some parts are funny, and some parts are pure fun-all ingredients for a good movie.

And now for the negatives. As I said above, the actors in this movie aren't anything special. Devin Sawa and Ali Larter? Those two are enough to make me puke. I can't say that the acting was horrible but it certainly isn't good by any means. Another thing that I have to point out (and judging by the other reviews, other people have noticed it as well) is the unrealisticness of it all. Obviously the whole "tricking death" thing is unrealistic but some of the scenes just make you want to say "Well that doesn't make much sense". And in some ways, the unrealisticness ruins what could have been a really good movie (hence the 4 stars).

Bottom line, Final Destination is a different kind of scary movie that many people will enjoy. I definitely recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Rube Goldburg reinvents the scythe. Both Clever and Stupid........2007-09-05

(don't look it up, a scythe is that big bladed thing the "Grim Reaper" claims lives with. You can look up Rube Goldburg though, I don't feal like explaining him).

So lets get to the point, "how can a stupid movie get 4 stars?. How can a stupid movie be clever? I'm sure this has happened before, but let me explain why I like this stupid movie/DVD as much as I did; ** = mild spoiler.

What makes it stupid?
-suspend disbelief very hard. Though psychic phenonenon are pretty well documented, never in such an extreme or systematic way as far as I know. I really had no problem with this aspect of the film.
-**A mortition who just happens to know way too much. This guy appears in one scene out of the blue. He basically is good friends with death and so, knows how everything works. Oh, and he's a real nut job to boot. This was the single most stupid and overly convenient caveat in the film.
-**Death as a shadowy, entity was really not necessary. This aspect kind of dumbed things down a little to much. I expect some dumb stuff in horror films. This was overt and lame.
-Some of these kids hate each other and we never know why. This is probably my single biggest beef about the acting/script/story. The whole rivalry thing was forced and over-blown (and otherwise unnecessary).
-The authorities, as usual, are idiots. Very cliche.
-One giant plot hole **(In what order did the other passengers die?).

So, what makes it clever?
-**The entire concept of cheating death and the rules that go with it. The mortition conveniently explains the rules and the kids go with it.
-**The methods of making people un-alive (here's where Rube Goldburg comes in). One little act or defect leads to a rediculous and entertaining chain of events. Trying to stop death is like playing wack-a-mole the size of a pool table. You had better be quick.
-Despite the "hate" thing, emotions and diologue usually seam reasonably believable. Different personalities react differently. Decent acting for a film of this type.
-Special effects are well done. you may never again want to fly after seeing the opening sequence.
-Overall, a well made, quality production.

About the DVD:
-limited extras; lame deleted scenes, "when will you die?" game (always march 19th no matter what I put in), "are you psychic?" game, Good documentary about a psychic investigator in California.
-An insert. No, really. An actual paper insert. These days; stunning.
-screened image on disk (again, stunning.)
-good sound, good image.

Now, let me explain what 4 stars actually means for this film.
There's the "Citizen Kane" 5 stars, and then there is the "Alien" 5 stars.
This is on the "Alien" 5 star scale.

Recap; film 4 stars, DVD 4 stars.

3 out of 5 stars 3.5. solid atmosphere but has its issues.......2007-04-15

Like music "scenes"; from hair metal to grunge to nu-metal to garage rock, films as well have their eras. 80's masked killers slashers (Halloween) to the 90's teen slashers (Scream) to the Japanese remakes (The Ring) to the current era which is the uber-gory films (Hostel). Final Destination plays with the teen slasher conventions a little bit (before they fell into the uber-gory camp with the sequels) but ultimately it still fits and despite some problematic script issues, it's still an effective horror film at times.

Alex Browning is a kid in a French class boarding Flight 180 en route to Paris. Just after takeoff, the plane's side rips off and it explodes. Of course it wasn't real as Alex just had a premonition and his erratic behavior and rantings of planes exploding is met with hostility from 5 of his classmates, his teacher and the staff and they're forced off the plane. Imagine everyone's shock when the plane actually indeed explodes in mid-air. But Death is mad as the all-powerful beings grand scheme of when people die was disrupted so he's hunting them one by one.

Main issue with the script is that the premise is intriguing but let's face it: it's still an oddball concept. Why would Death have flaws in its plan, even if we could see the signs? You'd think someone who has such a foresight and knowledge of fate wouldn't have things mess up easily. Alex almost becomes a gifted crime fighter with his know-how on how to beat death but it's a horror movie and it never makes sense. Plus he catches on incredibly quick to the idea that Death is playing hitman now that it seems kinda laughable he figured it out at all.

In a way, Final Destination reminds me of the first 2 Jurassic Parks while its sequels are like the third Jurassic installment: there's a sense of seriousness with this one and the Spielberg films whereas part 2 and 3 basically made it a thrill-ride and the gore almost becomes the reason to see it whereas this film was based on atmosphere and it does have a sense of foreboding. Now the very environment is threatening and anything can bring about someone's doom instead of a dude in a hockey mask.

Is it enjoyable? Sure. It's maybe not a great film through and through but as a horror film, it does its job well.

5 out of 5 stars GENIUS.......2007-03-21

TALK ABT RESPECT FOR A MOVIE. I GIVE THIS FILM TWO AMZING THUMBS UP! NOT ONLY FOR ORIGINALITY BUT FOR THE AMAZING SHOCK FACTOR..I MEAN THE BUS SCENE IS BY FAR ONE THE BEST SCENES IN HORROR FILM HISTORY. AND THERE HAVE BEEN MANY, NOT SO MUCH IN LAST 10 YRS, BUT STILL...YEAH! OH MY GOODNESS, JUST THINKING OF THAT SCENE ALONE BRINGS A TEAR OF PURE JOY TO MY EYE....TALK ABT SHOCK VALUE, UR JUST NOT EXPECTING IT. THERE WAS A WAVE OF SH** AND F**** AT THE MOVIE PREMIER. I CAN NOT SAY ENOUGH ABT JUST THAT ONE SCENE...BUT THE WHOLE MOVIE IS WORTH A WATCH...JUST THE FACT THAT BASICALLY UR WHOLE LIFE IS PART OF SOME F***** UP DESIGN, CREATED BY DEATH, LEADING UP TO UR EVENTUAL DEMISE, IS PRETTY MESSED UP. BUT TO ALSO KNOW THAT THERE IS NO ESCAPING IT, THAT EVENTUALLY DEATH WILL CATCH UP WITH YOU, JUST AMAZING...FROM START TO FINISH UR ENGAGED IN THIS WHEN, WHERE, AND HOW ARE THESE KIDS GOING TO DIE..A MUST SEE, OVER AND OVER AGAIN...

4 out of 5 stars Final Destination.......2007-02-07

A thriller that really makes you think about the "design" of things. Best horror I have seen, because it is based on things that could really happen, not about some crazed killer that keeps coming back from the dead.

4 out of 5 stars On a 1 to 10 scale, this collection is rated: 5.2.......2007-06-25

This new item from MILL CREEK ENTERTAINMENT contains only a handful of titles previously released by them.

NIGHT SCREAMS is an excellent collection of mostly-forgotten fright and suspense films that's sure to please all vintage movie fans.

Some NIGHT SCREAMS trivia:

THE GHOST AND THE GUEST was written by funnyman Morey Amsterdam (of THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW).

A SHOT IN THE DARK has been used as a movie title on eight separate occasions.

THE FACE AT THE WINDOW is the name of a dozen different movies.

THE TELL-TALE HEART is the repetition winner however, having been used as a title for 21 films! This 1960 version is not an adaptation of the Poe short story of the same name. The only connection to Poe might be the lead character, who just happens to be called Edgar.

MANFISH, on the other hand, was actually based on the writings of Edgar Allan Poe.

Ava Gardner appearing together with those goofy Bowery Boys? Yes, it's not only true, but the fellas were given top billing in GHOSTS ON THE LOOSE.

If you think you'd enjoy these films, then MILL CREEK's previously issued SUSPENSE 50 MOVIE PACK COLLECTION may also be of interest to you.

.

3 out of 5 stars OK for Sabato fans.......2003-04-05

The region 1 DVD version has no additional extras to the VHS one described. Good to see an earlier effort of Antonio's though. The plot does drag on slightly and having the same family move house twice within six months seems a bit far fetched. The only reason I was saw this movie for a second time was that it was due for UK transmission by BBC on Monday 24 March, then was postponed to Friday 4 April due to Iraq news. This transmission has also been postponed giving no further air date. Save your money and look out for the show on BBC1 listings in UK. Around 23.30 to 01.00 has been the previous attempted start times.

3 out of 5 stars Could be better.......2001-10-14

Antonio breaks out of jail and takes girlfriend Shannen on the run from the police and Shannen's family with him. The acting is flawless, and the film has some exciting moments, and I couldn't predict the ending. So why don't I give the film 5 stars? Well I feel the plot drags in parts so I don't think you can justify the price it's at now. Only buy if your a big fan of the actors or the price comes down.

4 out of 5 stars Fady Ghaly's reviews.......2001-11-14

My remarks toward this picture
Coming-of-age sagas are frequently burdened with threat, especially because the genre has been so overworked and even pulverized into cliché. Yet young filmmaker, John Fawcett, pulls off a coup with this hip and arresting drama that's full of spit and attitude, and is relentlessly in your face, whether you like it or not. The Genie-nominated, first-time Toronto director, working from Genie-nominated writer, Peter Wellington's edgy, intellectual script, re-invigorates the genre with panache.

He does so by balancing climactic suspenseful elements with authentic human insights. He does it with a first-rate cast, led by Chris Penn as a psychotic cop killer badly affected by a grim childhood who, when he had reached his breaking point, I guess you could say in a sense, had me on the edge of my seat till I was fully assured that he was conquered-such riveting performance was that compelling. A performance so compelling, it earned him a nomination as Best Actor at the 1996 Genie Awards. Here, Penn really delivers his finest since co-starring in Abel Ferrara's elegiac gangster film, The Funeral. (Even the title itself screams of great mourning for that which is irrecoverably past.)

The three youths played by our rising young stars are at loose ends during a teachers' strike that has closed down their small Ontario town's high school. The three friends, who dispute because their social and intellectual instincts tug in three dramatically different directions, find themselves in a quandary one afternoon as they head toward their secluded shack deep into the wilderness where the pressures of growing up do not have to be faced; however, that severely wounded and yet armed stranger in whom they discover hiding out inside may just be their ticket to real adventure. Overriding common sense, they decide to help the stranger, who we find out is named Luke, rather than report the incident to the police.

"If you want something, you just take it, and then it's yours," Luke says, and they do, and they love it. They get themselves into trouble and the thought of getting themselves in insubordinate acts excites them. (spoiler) What is so clever with regards to this piece is that, even when, through the audiences' eyes, we want to wail out the words: Wake up, stupid! when one of our teen heroes is about to make a mistake in judgment, the Fawcett-Wellington team make those mistakes understandable. We sympathize. We comprehend. We're involved.

The ambivalence and complexity of the struggle are why The Boys Club has accurately been called a cross between Stand By Me and River's Edge, two landmark films that explored teen anguish with a piercing intelligence, never pandering to the youths or condescending them.

Fawcett walks the same wobbly tightrope, even if The Boys Club remains as a modest film, at least, in scale, that will not gain the notoriety of either Stand By Me or River's Edge.

On the other hand, Penn is a towering force, a raging bull-of-a-catalyst in our teen protagonists' lives. Dominic Zomprogna-being the one to play the part of Kyle-perfectly essays the confused youth torn between intellect and impulse; Stuart Stone, who plays the part of Brad, is a terrific counterbalance as the practical one, while the charismatic Devon Sawa-a dead ringer for Leonardo DiCaprio-is pure feral instinct. (According to Sawa, his character in the film, whose name is Eric, is so unlike himself that it really puts his acting skills to the test. The Boys Club has generally been his most challenging film yet, and yet he passes with flying colors.) Nicholas Campbell provides a compellingly sad-sophisticated portrayal of Kyle's father.

Their personalities mix, the deeming of both their feud and friendship bond and the palpable danger of the narrative ups the emotional stakes. (spoiler)
The Boys Club is not at all just kids' play. It is an inexorable and deeply powerful film that tests friendships and human insight, and yet it doesn't ever overdraw upon a single factor that would diminish it from being the masterpiece that is, because that's precisely what it is despite of the fact that it was shot as a Canadian film on a skin-and-bones budget, will not be released in most countries-which is a shame-and was shown at only a few theaters in Canada. (Mind you, it, however, is available on VHS and DVD in, aside from Canada, Australia and the U.S. as well.)

The Boys Club, although the affect it has upon me isn't quite as great as it once was-for I have now watched it so many times, that it has reached an extent where the amount can no longer be counted anymore-it, nonetheless, is a film that will forever be special to me. Not only because the tension that was generated by these kids in danger influenced me to become a writer, an interest that has drastically altered me as a person, for I now I'm capable of expressing my feelings in a way I never thought possible; but, in addition, because, after having stepped inside a video store one glorious day, it instantaneously drew me to purchase a copy of it on DVD despite of the fact that I merely had a VCR-a machine that was left setting alone no longer, for I the following day ended up purchasing the player itself, a highly sophisticated machine in technology that has forever altered both my experience and outlook upon movie-viewing.

5 out of 5 stars A great thriller, a hot guy, what more could you ask for?.......2001-08-02

This movie was excellent and skillfully done. I don't only love it because one of the main stars, Dominic Zamprogna, is SOO hot, but just because it's a great movie. It is an edge-of-your-seat thriller that you will have to watch from beginning to end.

5 out of 5 stars Cool Movie ,Hot Chick.......2000-04-05

This Movie is cool it sounds like me and my friends and something that would happen to usand Amy Stwerwart who plays megan ohh-ahh man she so so incredibly hot man shes got me dreamin but the movie is cool watch it.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST MOVIE EVER!.......1999-12-06

This movie is my favoerite movie ever (and not just because I'm a Devon Sawa fanatic). As you watch the movie you can imagine what the boys went through. Also, it teaches you a lesson.

5 out of 5 stars Devon looks so amazingly hot!!!!.......1999-10-03

I can tell you that this is a well-crafted film and I can tell you that the actors did a great job. But I won't. Because the only reason I watched this movie was to see Devon show that beautiful smile that takes my breath away. I would love to get him in an abandoned shack for a few days. The actors did do a great job, but Devon was the only body...err person that caught and kept my eye :)

      Product Description

Two men who just robbed a bank seek shelter from a storm in the home of two Mexican adolescents (Elida Alicia and Gerry Ross). One of them, Roper (Jon Cypher) is an okay guy, but the other is ruthless (John Garces) and he rapes and kills the female teen then races off with the loot. Roper then reluctantly joins forces with the deceased's fourteen-year-old brother Miguel (Gerry Ross). Can they endure one another long enough to successfully track down the villain? Low-budget and sometimes a bit cliched, yes, but an otherwise enjoyable, realistic look at the West. Director Ralph C. Bluemke (Robby).

        3 out of 5 stars Joyride Review.......2003-05-29

For anyone teaching a course to young actors, screenwriters, or directors, this pic is an excellent tool. The problems inherent in the pic are just as instructive as its shining moments leaving a great deal of room to pick apart camera techinques, how the use of a musical score can detract from or add to a scene, and especially internalization of motive leading to choices an actor must make to infuse life into what otherwise could end up being a stereotypical, two-dimensional character.

Tobey Maguire has built a very respectable career on his sensitive, understated performances, yet the raw J.T. offers insight into Maguire's ability to branch out into personalities that are not always the "hero." Though his relative inexperience does show through in places, the strong believability of his interpretation of J.T. clearly shows the raw talent evident in even his early work.

By far the most provoking performance in the pic is the underrated Amy Hathaway as the internally tortured and physically exploited Tanya. A solid character interpretation from start to finish, Hathaway only stumbles when the script asks her for unnecessarily gratuitous lust, specifically the silly romp-in-the-car scene with Maguire. On a contrasting note, during the powerful bedroom scene with the Mayor, Hathaway shines by deftly conveying a deep-seated anguish for Tanya's unfortunate situation that is craftily hidden during the remainder of her performance.

Also highly noteworthy is Benecio Del Toro. It is common knowledge that small-budget productions can offer a wider scope of interpretation for an actor, and Del Toro demonstrates this to the fullest extent. A master of subtle physical acting, this early role showcases the talent that blossomed in later years. Along the same lines, Christina Naify as Ms. Smith does a nice job creating a real person out of a small amount of material by exploring physical gestures and vocal patterns that make up so much of a human being's personality.

All of the actors, and to a large extent the script itself, are nearly annihilated in many places by the exasperatingly poor musical score. Instead of developing in the viewer a deeper understanding of the character's interactions, the score is often bad enough to be considered a true "groaner."

A must-see for Maguire, Hathaway, Del Toro, and those quirky Adam West fans, "Joyride" is more interesting as a study of technique than great storytelling, but well worth the ride.

5 out of 5 stars Offbeat, Entertaining, full of twists. Enjoy........2002-08-13

Produced in 1996, this film is enjoyable on many levels. Drama, comedy, thriller...
Tobey Maguire shows his star power. He seems to be having fun with the role of J.T. Likewise his co-stars Wilson Cruz and Amy Hathaway work well together as three friends trying to escape their various situations in life. Adam West and Steven Gilborn are cast against type to advantage and a nice cameo from James Karen also add to the enjoyment. Benicio Del Toro is hilarious as the deadly serious Detective Lopez and Kenn Norman is believable as the sheriff. Also noteworthy is Judson Mills as Redneck Joey. Lastly I have to say Christina Naify is a standout as 'Smith'. At once sexy and deadly, she plays her part exceptionally well. Thoroughly recommended. The DVD has no special features of note, with the exception of a filmography and biography of Tobey Maguire. The print is excellent and the sound crisp. Buy It!
