So bad it's good, the notorious Gwendoline is one of those outrageously entertaining camp classics that will be enjoyed long after thousands of "better" movies have faded into obscurity. Loosely adapted from John Willie's pioneering 1940s comic strip "The Adventures of Sweet Gwendoline," and directed with good-natured humor by French softcore specialist Just Jaekin (Emmanuelle, The Story of O), this delirious dose of mainstream erotica plays like a sexy parody of Raiders of the Lost Ark and Romancing the Stone. In his own audacious fashion, Jaekin was attempting an ambitious, good-looking adventure with above-average production values, but Gwendoline owes its "bad movie" cult status to its cheesy combination of globe-hopping scenery, tacky sets, hopelessly wretched dialogue, laughably awful acting, and a constant parade of beautiful women, either half-naked or scantily clad in outrageous S&M costumes. The film is also notorious for being the screen debut of Tawny Kitaen (shortly before she appeared with Tom Hanks Bachelor Party), who brings a breathtaking lack of talent (and a very hot body) to her title role as Gwendoline, a scrappy stowaway who arrives in China on a quest to find her missing father, who'd ventured into remote jungles in search of a rare and beautiful butterfly.
Joined by hunky mercenary Willard (Brent Huff) and her loopy friend Beth (played by French model/actress Zabou), Gwendoline survives a variety of absurdly amusing obstacles (including one very phony-looking alligator) until they eventually reach the land of the Yik Yak, an Amazonian slave-culture consisting entirely of slim, sexy women! Through it all, Jaekin's image of women is a source of constant fascination: When they're not kicking ass or running around topless, Kitaen and Zabou act like helpless, virginal airheads who need a man to survive, and Gwendoline plays out like an adolescent wet dream. With a climactic chariot chase that must be seen to be believed, it's all so ridiculous that you can't help but be entertained, and Jaekin's 106-minute, French-language director's cut contains several action scenes that were cut for the film's English-dubbed 88-minute American version, released (and available separately) as The Perils of Gwendoline in the Land of the Yik Yak. --Jeff Shannon
On the DVD
Jaekin's original cut has been spectacularly restored for this Severin Films DVD release, with both French and English audio tracks and a delightful commentary by Jaekin with journalist/author Tony Crawley and Frederick Levier, former contributor to Starfix, a French magazine devoted to fantastic films; their unabashed enthusiasm for the film makes this commentary an unexpected treat. Also included: a 24-minute video interview with Jaekin, in which he discusses the production history of Gwendoline; a 10-photo gallery of Tawny Kitaen from the French softcore magazine Lui; and a fascinating vintage audio interview with Sweet Gwendoline creator John Willie, from the archives of sex-research pioneer Dr. Alfred Kinsey. Kudos to Severin Films for including these high-quality bonus features with a film that many consider one of the "worst" of the 1980s! One caveat, however: Why not include the American cut Perils of Gwendoline on a second disc, instead of as a separate DVD release? --Jeff Shannon

"don't put it away... throw it with great force!".......2007-07-04
Gosh, this is -without any trace of a doubt - THE silliest and stupidest movie I have even seen.
In the Soviet Russia in the 80s, when I was in the university, the only source of information about Western (made in West, not just the cowboy stuff) movies - besides the officially approved and thus empty editions - was a couple of obscure and very cheezy Polish magazines, printed on bad paper with smudged photos and unreadable texts. "Gwendoline" was a sensation with them and they dedicated article after article to the movie (they did the same with Emmanuelle and other softcore masterpieces).
So I finally decided to find out what was all the frenzy about.
Well , the 70s and 80s are over (thanks for small mercies) and the movie proved to be so bad, that it is not even good. You know, how we often say - oh, it is so bad it is delicious. This is not the case. This one clearly transcends the stage "so bad, it is actully good" and goes into "oh boy, bad is not the word".
Even softcore adventures should have at least one good idea, one good laugh and one good line per movie. This one does not. Girls look good (nobody argues) , the boy looks great (very neat six-pack) , costumes (if you can call them that) are rather abbreviated.
Usually when I do not like a movie and do not intend to keep it, I give it away. In this case I dropped it into trash as I would have been too ashamed to give it to anybody - not because of the naked bodies, but due to sheer stupidy of the film.
A Faulty Memory.......2007-06-12
I remembered this movie from high school as a mildly amusing adventure story with some pretty girls showing some of their charms. I had a faulty memory.
The pretty girls are there. Tawny Kitaen and Zabou and definitely easy on the eyes and they show themselves off quite a bit. So do a lot of other girls but those are nothing to stick in the memory. The problem though is with the story.
It is a silly adventure story but it is much worse than I remembered. A girl devotes herself to finding the butterfly her scientist father died trying to find. She is aided by her girl sidekick and by a mercenary guide. They find the butterfly and a lost civilization of Amazons with nefarious plans. Silly but the background is worse.
What I did not remember or realize from all those years ago is that this is some sort of fetish film intended to excite those who like seeing women wear leather and be led around on leashes. Blah!
It was watchable but not very good.
Funny, sexy, but weird.......2007-05-30
This movie is a typical sexy B-movie, but it has enough scenery to keep your attention while trying to find the plot. We watched this twice through, and each time was about the same. Funny, sexy, but kinda cheap and amateurish, like most B-movies can tend to be. Knowing that you are not getting this movie for the plot or action scenes, but for the scenery and Tawny, you can settle in and enjoy this movie. There are a couple of scenes that are a bit gross, but overall it isn't as bad of a movie as I had expected. And yes, Tawny does look good in it. :)
Gwendoline - Unrated Director's Cut .......2007-05-08
Great female adventure film where the female gets to have just as much fun as her male counter-part.
If you like a full sweater and an empty head, this one's for you........2007-05-07
It is what it is, a skin-flick with Tawny Kitaen.

Taylor Hackford (An Officer and a Gentleman) directed this 1993 epic about Chicano gang wars in the California prison system and the differing and tragic paths of three boyhood friends. Half-brothers Paco and Cruz grow up with their cousin Miklo in Chicano Los Angeles, and each in turn is influenced by their violent environment and the prevalence of drugs on their streets. Cruz becomes an artist but winds up tragically addicted to heroin, while Miklo serves time for murder and Paco becomes a cop, setting the stage for a confrontation between the two when Miklo is released from prison. The film strives for an epic feel but takes too long to set up its interweaving stories. It is notable, however, for some fine acting on the part of Benjamin Bratt and Damian Chiapa, as well as smaller roles by Billy Bob Thornton, Ving Rhames and Delroy Lindo. Its depictions of life in the California prison system are harrowing and powerful, and serve as the centerpiece of this urban drama. --Robert Lane
Description
Now, from the director of AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN and the producer of LA BAMBA comes BLOOD IN ... BLOOD OUT, a critically acclaimed modern-day epic. Within the rich and colorful Chicano culture of East Los Angeles, three cousins raised as brothers fiercely live by a generations-old tradition of family -- a power stronger than law, a force deeper than friendship. In one life-shattering moment, the trio is torn apart, forcing them to follow three separate paths: one searching for truth in the law, one expressing his passion through art, and one finding power in prison. Yet through it all, family and honor keep their lives intertwined as each strives for survival and power!

BLOOD OUT!!!.......2007-08-12
This movie was lame! Bag acting, bad dialogue, bad directing, just bad! Who said chicanos like benjiman bratt should look like jewish homies, and Meklo are a typical chicano name, Ha Ha! the only positive thing I can say about this flick is it does end.
Blood in( my cash) Blood out( should have killed myself for watching it)

Get everything situated, because this is a long one.But it's worth watching.I enjoyed this movie a lot.
Finally! A prison drama with something to say........2007-04-03
I think what seperates this movie from other prison movies is there's a much bigger message to be learned, and it's not just stay away from prison (we all know that by now). However, there's more to it, and this movie shows you that. Don't get me wrong, you still have the same violent, death by shankings, and rioting scenes, but that's just not the primary focus of the whole movie. Let me just say that I am glad that it wasn't as violent and graphic in nature with the rape scenes as it's fellow Chicano prison film.. American Me. American Me was good, but it's so dark throughout. There were no happy moments in that movie from start to finish. Frankly, after watching that I went from calm and cool to sick and depressed. However, with Blood in Blood Out, this was the first time they tried to actually give you a happy ending. This movie is about much more than drugs and prison rape scenes. It's about family, loyalty, coming of age, and finding forgiveness. The man that Paco started out as, is not who he grew up to be, which was inspirational in a way. It just shows that just because your life starts off bad that doesn't always mean that you can't change who you are, and become something more than just a common street thug. This movie shows you that family is family, and no matter what your family does it's never too late to forgive them and start over. However, I do have 2 pet peeves about this movie. First of all, in my opinion, the movie was entirely too long. Secondly, Miklo didn't learn a damn thing. It's sad that even though he lost a limb he never changed his mentality or his ways, and he ultimately ended up the way he started out. There was no growth with his character period. At least the 2 brothers finally grew up, and became the men they were suppose to be. I guess that just goes to show that some people get it, and some people don't. Overall, I don't think this movie was perfect, but if you give it a chance it is pretty good. Certainly, better than what I was expecting to begin with.

Description
The Punisher walks through the world we all know, a world darkened by war, crime, cruelty and injustice. He has no superpowers to battle the evil he sees - only his fierce intelligence, his years of combat experience and, above all, his iron determination to avenge those wronged by society's villains.
Customer Reviews:
Dark, violent and entertaining.......2007-09-06
FBI agent Frank Castle is the lead agent in breaking up a sale of guns. During the melee the son of a mob boss is killed. Afterwards, Castle goes to Puerto Rico for a family reunion. The mob boss sends his men down to kill Castle and his entire family. But Castle survives and returns to murder the boss, all his men and his family.
I didn't read the comic book so I don't care if the movie followed it. I wasn't expecting much from The Punisher but thoroughly enjoyed it. Thomas Jane does a nice job in the lead role as does John Travolta as the mob boss. When Castle comes back he takes an apartment in a run down building on the outskirts of town where his neighbors are two oddballs and a beautiful, but damaged woman. I was glad to see Castle did not get involved with the woman only because it would have been too much of a Hollywood cliche, and I liked the moments of humor the two oddballs added. In a movie, this dark and violent it helped to have some light moments every now and then.
PUNISHMENT ... NOT VENGEANCE.......2007-08-30
The Punisher was one of those rare oddities in which I thought was okay the first time I saw it, but grew to like it more when I watched it again and again.
Based on the Marvel Comic of the same name, it delves into the life of FBI Agent Frank Castle. After making a bust against the Saint family which kills one of the sons, the wife wants "the whole family dead."
As Saint enjoys a retirement, then a family reunion, the Saints strike, taking not just his wife and child, but his father, siblings, and cousins ... and Castle himself.
As with all vengeance movies, he survives to extract his vengeance ... or I should say punishment. As he broods and drinks his life away, he meets a few people in the slum apartment he finds. He tries to keep them at bay, but they persist to forge a loose, shaky relationship.
Nietzche (sp?) once said, "When fighting monsters, be careful you do not become one." Only with that in mind can you really watch The Punisher.
While I understand why some people did not like it, I found it moving on several levels. First and foremost was Thomas Jane's acting ability. He made the Punisher real, grueling, desperate, sad, and angry at the same time. It gives the whole movie a degree of believability as opposed to the horrid 1989 movie which trivialized Castle's pain.
It also pushes the bounds of a normal vengeance movie. The audience may question Castle's approach to justice ... just as the comic did in the 1970's and 1980's. It is dark, angry, and downright hateful. The audience will wonder if this really is punishment or vengeance. They will wonder if Castle, or the rather the Punisher has become a monster himself.
Finally, in the end, the audience might get the sense that Castle found no satisfaction in his victory. Maybe it is allegorical to the extraction of vengeance, which in the end really provides no real fulfillment.
What makes this movie work, though, are the supporting cast members of Rebecca Rojmin, Ben Foster, and John Pinette and the relationship they forge with Castle.
Part comic relief, but more so as relational help, they truly save Castle from his own depression. Although afraid, they offer sympathy and help to alleviate the loneliness. Watching Castle resist them, and eventually letting them in a little is what keeps him human and from becoming a monster.
While many critics thought of this as a distraction, this element is what allows the movie to be more than the average vengance movie.
In any case, while dark and very disturbing, I thought The Punisher worked.
The punisher shouldn't play games........2007-08-26
In this version, Thomas Jane is the punisher. After his family is murdered by a crime boss he goes after the crime bosses family. It wasn't as true to the comic book as I would have liked. Frank Castle seemed to be playing a lot of games with the criminals instead of just killing them when he had the chance. Also, they made the punisher seem kind of weak in spots and not the unstoppable monster that he usually is.
I will say that Thomas Jane is a better actor than Dolph Lungren and there was more of a story in this movie.
God I love this movie.......2007-08-23
If you enjoyed the theatrical release then you will love this version. The opening animations that helps set the story up for the sub plot that they had to cut out of the original were awesome. You can tell that the people that worked on and acted in this movie truly love it. By far the best translation of a Marvel comic book to the big screen. Thomas Jane rules as the Punisher. He totally got the character of Frank Castle right.
The real story was much better..........2007-07-10
All of this movie rewriting wasn't necessary. The details of the comic book Punisher were more than sufficient. Okay, I can put my love of the comic aside and view this as a separate entity--
Aside from bastardizing the great story, the action and acting were lackluster overall, and in some spots, just plain bad. I won't even bother with the details.
Maybe what the Punisher needs is an indie remake by some real fans, this high budget shine and corny dialogue isn't working!
Product Description
This is PAL VIDEO FORMAT (not NTSC and will not play in regular American DVD-player) and an only official release of Larry Clark's "Ken Park" movie on DVD over the world by Russian company "CP Digital". Larry Clark's Ken Park has sent ripples with explicit scenes, and acts, overshadowing other movies on display. The story of four dysfunctional families in the skateboarding hotbed of Visalia, Calif., unspooled in the experimental Upstream competition. "But I didn't want to cut a single frame," the cult film director and photographer told. "All my life I've seen the camera turn away, but these scenes are part of the reality ... of this generation." The film was co-directed by Clark who made the controversial 1995 movie "Kids", renowned cinematographer Ed Lachman, who shot Steven Soderbergh's award-winning "Erin Brockovich" and Todd Haynes' "Far From Heaven". The movie features violence involving not only the restless teenagers in the small town, but also their parents. But Clark says the film is an "uplifting" look at modern youth that shows some of the kids overcoming the odds..."My first film Kids was about the secret world of children, where parents are not allowed. In Ken Park we go inside the houses of four families and meet the parents. Ken Park is the story of children and their parents in Visalia, California, an isolated inland town between Los Angeles and Fresno. The story flows through the lives of three young boys and one girl, all childhood friends, and their parents. The childrens and parents lives are unmasked and you see the ascent of violence, sex, hatred, love and the manic episodes of emotional confusion." - Larry Clark

intense movie.......2007-09-09
i saw this movie one night being aired on a movie channel in reykjavik, iceland. this would probably never air on a cable channel in the states. some of the scenes are pretty unsettling and i actually didnt know what it was called or who directed it until i searched for it here. definitely worth seeing, very larry clark.
Had to see what the hoopla was about.......2007-08-06
Hard to watch at times due to its unflinching realism and unsympathetic characters, Larry Clarke's hard to find "Ken Park" centers around a quartet of dysfunctional friends in Visalia, California after the death of a fellow student (named Ken Park). Clarke takes his camera into the lives of the teens whose own lives aren't exactly rosy. Shawn is having an affair with his girlfriends mother; Peaches is the surrogate wife for her widowed father who is still in mourning; Claude is having difficulty with his parents (particularly his obnoxious father), who are about to have another child, but should have instead been sterilized; and lastly there is Tate, the psycho who lives with his parents and has a passion for women's tennis. With real actors playing alongside the teens, it is difficult to watch at times due to the lack of acting talent, but the adults rounding out the cast - including the always riveting Amanda Plummer as Claude's pregnant mother - make up for it.
It's explict and really hard to find - pretty much banned in the US, but I purchased my copy off eBay for $10.
A powerful film.......2007-07-08
Ken Park has so much controversy and disagreement surrounding it that it's impossible to know what is true and what isn't without seeing the actual film yourself. Allow me to address some of these issues here:
Those who see Larry Clark as a pedophiliac fetishist are largely ignorant of his previous work and his motivations for filming the things that he does. It's not as simple as a 60-year-old director filming naked adolescents - Clark has been interesting in telling the story of adolescents since he was their age. It's simply that he's gotten older while his interest has stayed the same. Unfortunately for him, society has a complex structure of taboos that he appears to break at times. This does not make him an exploiter of young people. He has valid artistic reasons for showing what he does.
Clark has always been about showing the unaffected reality of youth whether it's in the city (Kids), the ghetto (Wassup Rockers), or suburbia (Ken Park). Clark doesn't turn his camera away because to fide behind the conventions of film and ideas of "morality" is to compromise the honesty that Clark finds in his young actors. Zavattini speaks of filming the common man for the purpose of social change - Clark is operating along similar premises here.
It's possible that moralists would have problems with Clark's vision if he was in his 20s, but it's more likely that these people are just using it as an easy excuse to attack frank, open sexuality on film.
Ken Park is the work of an artist at the top of his game. It's brutal honesty is what is missing from Hollywood cinema today. I enjoy big budget movies as much as anyone, but it's nice to have a refreshing alternative. This film has a purpose beyond "entertainment" (indeed - it's not a fun, or easy film to watch), but it's a film worth watching provided you don't mind seeing some truly horrible sights.
The film IS graphic and you'll see things that will stay with you for a long time, but it never crosses into exploitation. If you look at the work, its structure, and its system, you can justify everything in the film. However, that is not to say that everyone should watch this film. There's nothing wrong with not enjoying extreme content (whether visual or textual) and if that's you, I would avoid this. If you can handle it though, this is a very powerful film.
Finally, there's the issue of the lack of a domestic release. The PAL DVD from Russia has decent video and sound quality. It comes with Russian subtitles, but they are removable. The only difficulty is the menu system which is in Russian. I can't speak for all sellers, but RussianDVD-Com (the seller I used) provided excellent instructions for deactivating subtitles and starting the film. Since the DVD is all-region, you can watch it in a computer or a DVD player with a PAL converter. It's a shame we can't get this film a proper release in the USA.
A perfect look into a teens life..........2007-04-24
I think this person is totally missing the point of Larry Clark and his total body of work. Had you done your homework you would have known that Larry Clark started his career as a photographer. He went underground with a group of kids in the 60' and 70' to photograph how they lived etc. Most were drug addicts and had casual sex (take a look at Tulsa). All of this was boldly documented in Larry's photos. He does not flinch from life as you would seem to have him do. You say that none of these characters are interesting to you. Well would they be if you met them on the street? They are kids. You would ignore them. You have no idea how they live, what they think and what makes them do the things they do. Nor it seems do you care. This is a movie about life. It has not beginning or end, it has not climactic scene, and this is not a Johnny Deep film. Wake up! You may not like Ken Park but despite your shortcomings on understanding film it is and important piece. You should also watch Short Bus. Not buy Clark but an excellent film as well. But watch out it has graphic sex in it. It also has no Disney ending so you might be disappointed with that as well. What did you think of Kids? Gummo? Julian the Donkey Boy? And please list the million other ways in which teenagers can act out their messed up lives. Just a few will do. Do you know any teenagers? Have you talked to them? Guess what. They are lying to you. That is Larry Clark's skill as an artist. His kids tell the truth and some people can't take it, don't understand it or want to ignore it. Where do you belong? I think you should go underground with some homeless kids. Live with them for a year and document what you see. It might just open that closed mind of your and allow you to see what is actually in front of you.
Oh, one other thing, what is this Jerry Springer situation you keep referring to? Were you on the show giving your point of view on this film? If so, I'm sorry I missed it.

Based on Susanna Moore's popular novel, In the Cut centers on Frannie (Meg Ryan), an emotionally stifled English teacher who gets steamy with sultry Malloy (Mark Ruffalo, You Can Count On Me), a cop who's investigating a series of brutal murders--but Frannie soon suspects that Malloy may be the killer. As a psychological thriller, In the Cut is heavier on psychology than thrills; the story is a skeleton that director Jane Campion (The Piano, An Angel at My Table) cloaks in one of the most nightmarish visions of urban life since Taxi Driver or Seven, accompanied by lots of explicit sex. The movie's dark tone will put some viewers off, but Ruffalo's effortless magnetism serves him well; no woman in the audience will question how quickly Ryan falls into bed with him. Also featuring Jennifer Jason Leigh and an uncredited Kevin Bacon. --Bret Fetzer
Customer Reviews:
Actually really liked this movie.......2007-09-01
Meg Ryan puts together an amazing performance that is up there with Linda Fiorentino in The Last Seduction, but this is not a movie to watch for a thrill. It has a college English professor as the protagonist who quotes poetry at every opportunity. If anything, it's film noir from the female perspective. Instead of a femme fatale, the (possibly fatal) interest here is the detective who comes looking for Frannie. Frannie doesn't trust him from the beginning (her first comment is "Is that badge real?" and she makes him wait outside until she can check with the station) but she'd like to. Maybe. Or maybe she'd like to believe he's a fake. Her past choices haven't exactly been playing it safe.
So from the beginning, there's a question of trust, and how the dream of the other in a relationship can obscure the real person standing there, to the point where it's possible to accept the dream over the reality.
Frannie has no real connection to the world around her. She loves, but can't really empathize with her sister. Her father (seen only in her dreams) is thoughtless and carried away with romance. And her relationships with men in general are fraught. Frannie is so surrounded by damaged, dangerous men that the prospect of a serial killer is far less intimidating than a one night stand who has the key to her apartment and thinks he's her boyfriend.
So. Awesome movie. Not something anyone else is likely to do again, and although it's worthwhile, it's not exactly "feel good." Unless you count the boobies.
an extremely bland terrible movie.......2007-08-21
After dying to see this movie, I finally got the chance to rent it. Boy, was I sad. This movie is extremely slow and boring with no explanation for anything. Not only was it stupid beyond control with some extremely unlikeable characters, when the killer was revealed, it didn't explain why they were the killer, it was for absolutely no reason. It also went too off-plot during the movie a lot. Another big letdown was that Meg Ryan and Mark Ruffalo had no chemistry. They truly didn't show their acting skills in this one. This was a huge letdown seeing that I like meg ryan and mark ruffalo. I truly don't reccomend this movie.
- - little bittle childish - -.......2007-08-15
This is the story of a young girl stuck in the body of a mature woman.
I'd give it -1 one for all the naked actors, 3 for atmosphere, -2 for the story and 2 for Kevin Bacon.
More Perils of Pauline, more Campion Camp.......2007-07-11
A female director (Campion) and 2 female producers (Parker and Kidman) give us a frank look at some kind of unreal female version of a male fantasy of a sexy slasher movie, whatever that is. Trash talkin'. Plot telegraphin' from the first 10 minutes. You know what the twists will be. Our Pauline just isn't interesting enough. Bad. Baaaaaaad. Desperately seeking sexy without actually being appealing. What were they thinking, if anything?
The Piano, at least, had some quirkiness.
Yeah, dumb is a good tag for this.
MEG DOESN'T CUT IT.......2007-07-03
A very, very bad movie which is inadvertently camp and funny. Meg Ryan looks very uncomfortable with full frontal nudity while Mark Ruffalo looks impressive and relaxed. A silly melodramatic plot with a ridiculous ending. It's amazing Jane Campion agreed to direct this if she read the script. Although a weak movie, most of it is not boring but after watching it you really feel you've wasted your time. And, poor Meg Ryan must have felt her career was over.

Low budget greatness.......2007-06-12
The Descent didn't actually scare me, but it came closer than any film I've seen. The claustrophobic angles and dark, nearly pitch black lighting really gave it an effect I haven't seen since Pitch Black. The creatures were well done and nearly believable, and quite frightening. I would hate to be in the caves with them. Since this was a horror/thriller, the story wasn't expected to be very dense, and the characters weren't expected to be atypical, and this is usually the fault with this genre. If you want to terrify the audience, you need to identify with the victims and get to care for them. In this film we're just barely introduced to them enough to get to know their stereotype. But all of this doesn't matter when they enter the cave system and we see the beautiful underworld. This cave has never been mapped, so this is the greatest adventure these spelunkers could hope for, until the crawlspaces collapse behind them. With no way back, they move onward looking for an exit when the dark, confined spaces start to take a toll on their minds. But being stuck under the earth is the least of their worries. I really liked how well the film was made, and how complex the story got once the action got started. I said early we didn't expect the people to be atypical, but they really developed under the pressures of darkness, flight and survival.

TRULY SCARY - Blu-ray Perfection!.......2007-03-14
I love a great horror film that can actually make you want to turn the light on or lose sleep after watching it. Every so often a film comes along that accomplishes this and 'The Descent' is a prime example. The film is a departure from the clutter of junk horror films that have been released over the past few years by not merely infiltrating you with just startle scenes. The sheer fear factor of being trapped hundreds of feet below ground with the prospect of death at every turn is simply the cornerstone of the aural terror you feel throughout most of the film.
The Blu-ray presentation is immaculate from the reference quality video to the PCM 6.1 lossless audio track that is amazingly immersive. A must see for any horror fan and a 'high recommend' for anyone!
Review on the film, not the disk.......2007-03-06
I guess everyone's opinion will vary, but I found this film and it's story to be completely lame. First of all, anyone who has EVER spelunked knows that you do not enter a cave without a map. Perhaps if you're some kind of professional adventurer and have the tools, support personnel, and the resources perhaps. However, this group of women certainly did not fit the bill. The characters were not well-developed, as some other reviewers would have you believe. They basically each seemed to fit into the stereotypical "group of gals" roles, when you were given any kind of glimpse into their personas. Really the only characters that were at all developed was the main character and Juno (the idiot that lead her friends, unknown to them, into an unknown cave system), and the both of them barely at that. All we really know about the groups is that they're women, Juno is something of an adventurer and probably had an affair with the main character's husband, and the main character's husband was tragically killed shortly after the group's last adventure.
Once we get into the cave the movie starts to take off...if that's what you want to call it. Yeah, they did a good job with the camera work and lighting, lending a sense of claustraphobia. The 'monsters' in the film really didn't go very far instilling fear into the viewer. The big mistake they made was in showing the enemy. In a movie like this, what you don't know is more scary than what you do know. Unfortunately, they didn't leave you with this fear of the unknown for long. After a short time, I found myself hoping for the ladies' deaths to come quick so that the film would end. I won't ruin the ending, but many of you will be saying, "What?" when the 'twist' is revealed. Fortunately, I rented this movie on NetFlix, so I lost out on nothing more than an hour and a half of my time.

Great feel good movie.......2007-08-29
this movie gives me that warm and gushy feeling every time. i saw a sneak preview of it at a National Indian Education Association conference years ago, and it finally got released on dvd! grahm greene is just great! highly recommended!
Warm and Fuzzy.......2007-07-26
Though no one need worry here about an Oscar nomination, this is a very sweet and funny film, and it treats Native Americans as real persons with real issues, not as some sort of stereotype, either "good" or "bad." I also know some of the bit players, who are members of a Grammy winning Native American singing group here in Alaska, so I may be a little biased.
Finally...a movie made with Indian humor!.......2007-07-07
I love this movie and everyone I've shared it with were surprised to find themselves laughting at the humor in it. A silly film with a surprisingly wonderful plot.
It is especially good to see Graham Greene playing a fun part. I won't go into the plot because the whole movie comes together so well in the end, I don't want to spoil it. I just want to mention how refreshing it was to hear no bad language, see no violence and scenes left to your imagination like well written movies do.
I'm buying it again to have a backup - incase they run out like most movies do in this country that are written, directed and staring American Indians.
(use to be I'd find them on EBay from the U.K. but lately I've noticed more showing up on Amazon now - thank you Amazon)
Christmas Classic in the Making.......2007-02-20
This comedy is as gentle as a cloud, but has much more substance; mistaken identity, quirky characters, a bit of mayhem, and cute kids. This is a movie that can be enjoyed by a wide range of ages. It was great to see Native Americans portrayed in such positive and clever ways. Keep an eye out for the runaway mouse. He and the vegan chef provide some of the biggest laughts in this delightful comedy.
Christmas In The Clouds.......2007-01-18

Kip Raines (Giovanni Ribisi) is a cocky young car thief working with a crew to steal 50 cars for a very bad man whose nickname is "The Carpenter." Being young and cocky, Kip messes up, so it's up to his big brother, Randall "Memphis" Raines (Nicolas Cage), to come out of car thief retirement and save him. With a cast that includes Robert Duvall, Angelina Jolie, Delroy Lindo, Cage, and Ribisi, it would be easy to say this story wastes all their talents--which it does, but that's not the point. This is a Jerry Bruckheimer film. A good story and complex characters would only get in the way of the action scenes and slow the movie down. No, Gone in 60 Seconds (based on the cult 1974 film of the same name) is not about the stars as much as it's about cars. Fast cars. Rare cars. Wrecked cars. All cars. Too bad director Dominic Sena (Kalifornia) doesn't come across as more of a gearhead; he seems less interested in fast cars than fast cuts. But is this movie fun? Absolutely, and it's fun because it's so stupid. With pointless car chases and hackneyed dialogue in one of the most predictable plots of the year, Gone in 60 Seconds is a comic film that's not quite a parody of itself, but darn close. --Andy Spletzer
Description
Fasten your seatbelts for the extended ride of your life in this high-performance, fuel-injected GONE IN 60 SECONDS DIRECTOR'S CUT from producer Jerry Bruckheimer (NATIONAL TREASURE, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL, PEARL HARBOR). Never-before-seen footage adds fuel to this already high-octane action hit starring Nicolas Cage, Robert Duvall, and sexy Angelina Jolie. A legendary car booster (Cage) thought he'd left the fast lane behind him until he's forced out of retirement to save his kid brother from the wrath of an evil mobster. It's nothing less than a full-throttle race to pull off the ultimate car heist: 50 exotic beauties in 24 hours -- and the cops are already onto them!

Zero stars because it doesn't work.......2007-09-05
I bought the original DVD (not Dir. Cut). The disc won't play in my DVD player. It just keeps saying "reading" (aka searching for the disc that's in the player). All of my other DVDs work, though.
Well, there's a waste of $7.
HELL YEAAAAAH!!!!!!!,.......2007-06-20
I thought that this was one of the best action movies I have seen during that year it came out. First of all, it got your adrenaline up, which to me is important. Second of all, it depicts American love for cars and life style in a very accurate way. The way Cage talks and names cars and begs them to be good to him, all that is very specific to this country's culture and if you've ever been to Los Angeles, it makes even more sense. The movie points out that a car is more important then money, then women, then sex and though, not many will agree that it's a positive description, it is true of many people's feeling about it. This movie starts out with Memphis Raines (Nicolas Cage) who is a retired car thief. After his younger brother Kip (Giovanni Ribisi) blows a big job for top villain The Carpenter the older Raines is forced out of retirement to save his brothers life. The cost? He has 72 hours to steal 50 top range cars.
Dominic Sena pilots this basic plot making his intentions clear from the outset with a dazzling high speed chase. Once Memphis is on the scene he has to assemble a crew to help boost the 50 cars on his shopping list on a one night marathon. The supporting actors are good, seeming to vault effortlessly around the poorer parts of Scott Rosenberg's screenplay. Robert Duval deserves a special mention as Otto, Memphis's mentor and teacher. Delroy Lindo is good as the nemesis in the police Detective Castlebeck. Angelina Jolie as Sway, the love interest, has only a minor impact on the proceedings. The real stars of this film are the cars. The actors uniformly do a good job with the thin script.
The actions, especially the final chase, are breath taking, although the actors get mired in the slightly sickly sweet 'brotherly love' theme. With no real twists or complex plotting this is a movie you can sit and watch over and over. Bruckheimer knows his stuff... HELL YEAAAAAAH!
The Italian Job meets the Ocean's series........2007-06-18
A very pleasant surprise, Gone in 60 Seconds, is an adventure that brings to the screen the story of a former car thief who is forced back into stealing in order to save his little brother's life. The problem is that he has to steal 50 exotic cars in only three days' time...
Nicolas Cage, Robert Duvall, Giovanni Ribisi, Angelina Jolie, Vinnie Jones, and the rest of this AMAZING cast, have outdone themselves with their performances, which are commendable to say the least. All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100% and it really shows! Very well written and very well presented, the movie is without a doubt guaranteed to provide more than just a few thrills, not to mention a few laughs.
The setting, the plot, the dialogues, the humor (!), and the music (!) are all wonderful!
In short, Gone in 60 Seconds is a movie definitely worth watching and one to seriously consider adding to your movie collection! BRING ON THE SEQUEL!

I saw the original"Gone" in the 70's & many times times more on cable & I
own the VHS & Plain DVD when DVD's came out. I have seen remakes of other movies and they did suck, but This didn't.
The plot was abit different that the original, but it had to change. Nicolas did a bang up job {No pun} & I liked the ending about family
& saving the cop.I loved the part of mentor played by Robert Duvall, just as crusty as the part he played from Days of Thunder.
But The best part was indeed played by Angelina Jolie.Great Call. Buying the Directors Cut as I type.

Best Superman collection there is........2007-08-12
i was really hoping and waiting for a superman collection like this to become real...and here it is. the first and second movies (even the donner cut) are the best of the bunch. everything else is just what it was...if you liked it then - great; if not - that's fine too.

The movies I'm certain are fine. I ordered the collectors edition because of the aluminum case and it was damaged in shipping which defeats the purpose of having ordered the collector's edition. It was a gift and the gracious receiver did not mention that it was banged up but I know there was disappointment. Might I suggest more bubble wrap in your shipping dept.

The Ultimate Fix for a Superman Junkie!.......2007-06-07
Dear God, this is the set I've been waiting for all my life. I have been in love with the Superman mythos since the first movie way back in 1978. A large part of my love with the character is the complexity given by Christopher Reeve's performance which Brandon Routh aptly carried on. Above all, this set allowed me to finally see the legendary cut scenes from Superman IV (And no, they not only do not improve the movie as urban legend claims but make it worse) as well as Richard Donner's version of Superman II (making me wonder if he'd had the time to do some final reshoots and add that finishing touch what it really could have been). I fell in love with Superman all over again.
Absolutley a must have.......2007-06-04
All I can say is if you are a fan of Superman and in particular the movies this is the set to have. It has everything!
And the Special editions and Donner Cuts are fantastic.

The Story Behind the Longest Winning Streak in Football History.......2007-08-26
This film will give people an opportunity to analyze the mindset and climate created by Coach Ladouceur and the De La Salle coaching staff. You will also learn the importance of brotherhood between children and adults. The director and producers did an outstanding job at giving us a visual description of the mystery behind the streak. This is a must see for anyone interested in being successful in the professional world of sports and business.
More Than Just a Football Documentary.......2007-01-09
I have purchased this video twice now, the first I loaned to a friend and he never returned it!
This DVD is a great documentary that gives a glimpse of a football power built on discipline, dedication and strong interpersonal relationships, with football success a manifestation of these qualities.
I recommend reading the book "When the Game Stands Tall" and watch this DVD and you will gain a great insight to DeLaSalle and their program as they were both done over the same time period.
A great video for athletes, coaches, students, etc. I cannot recommend it enough

A must if you love the purity of High School Athletics...or simply love athletics.......2005-11-24
"1: The Story..." is a must in every coach and sport's fan DVD library. I first caught on to this story as most of us did: little blurbs on the news and small anecdotes in the paper. When I saw that goingdigital films and Tim O'Hara had spent a season with the team, I decided to take a shot and order this DVD.
I should mention that I coach softball and girls soccer, and when I showed the girls soccer team pieces of the DVD they were immediately hooked. We were looking to start a tradition of excellence of our own based on hard work, honesty, morals and Christian values. The girls instituted aspects from the documentary such as chapel time and committment cards into our own season. As a matter of fact, at our first chapel the girls stood up and hugged to seal their committments to each other just as Coach Ladoceur's players do after their own team chapels.
These ideas have become the basis of what we did (and still do), and the cohesion we picked up from Coach Laudceur, his team and his staff were a major inspiration that created our success.
When other coaches at my school found out about Tim O'Hara's work and how we were using it, they began to ask to borrow the DVD. Now, nearly a year later, the DVD has been widely viewed and highly appreciated by nearly every coach in our building.
The beauty of this story is that it's not about football. It's about sports, life and the love of teammates. It's about a coach who has stayed humble (despite ridiculous success), who never preaches the sermon but simply lives it, and who might just knock you off your seat with his dry delivery of powerful words.
Shot beautifully, this DVD captures the essence of high school sports and the true definition of "success" at this level. It's not always pretty, it's not always joyful, but at its best it is pure and honest. In a day of Terrel Owens arbitration cases, steroid-using baseball players and coaches who seem to have lost their influence to players who make three times what they do, "1: The Story..." reminds us that we can still go out to the local ballfield and catch sports at its best.
And if you're a coach, it reminds you that your job matters for all the right reasons.
Excellent insight into the De La Salle football program.......2005-05-19
I've been going to De La Salle football games for a long time now, ever since "the streak" started. Like most people that follow the program, I would always find myself asking "How do they do it"? How do they win so many games against the high level of compitetion that they play? This excellent documentary answers all of these questions and the answers are not what you would think. They do it by getting the kids to commit to each other, to their community, and to themselves. By following around the coaches and players for a year, the viewer is able to get direct insight into the program. It is almost surreal to see how well the kids bond to one another through these techniques; teenage boys crying and telling each other how much they love and mean to one another. You don't even have to have an interest in football to enjoy this film. If you are at all interested in the development and education of young men and women then this film will do you great good.
