Offering a screwball twist on the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, this delightful comedy has grown dated since its release in 1941, but that only adds to its everlasting charm. Written by the ace screenwriting team of Billy Wilder and Charles Brackett and directed by Howard Hawks, the movie presents a breezy case of opposites attracting when nightclub singer "Sugarpuss" O'Shea (Barbara Stanwyck) is recruited to teach jazzy slang to a group of culturally isolated professors. Gary Cooper plays Bertram Potts, the straight-laced scholar who's compiling slang for a new encyclopedia, and his equally stodgy colleagues are fascinated when Sugarpuss and "Pottsie" seem to be warming up for romance. Complications ensue when the savvy singer must distance herself from her mobster fiancé (Dana Andrews), and Ball of Fire takes a wacky turn when the klutzy intellectuals take on the mobster's henchmen. It's all a bit quaint by today's standards, but the movie's got a wealth of witty dialogue and sassy appeal, with Stanwyck leading the way in a role that's equal parts tough exterior and soft-hearted vulnerability. As a bonus, she performs a pair of rousing nightclub numbers (including a lively rendition of "Drum Boogie") with hopped-up drummer Gene Krupa and his orchestra. Ball of Fire was remade in 1948 as the Danny Kaye musical A Song is Born. This one's a real treat for fans of vintage Hollywood comedies. Don't miss it! --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars The stuff classics are made of.......2007-07-29

We are talking about the best of the best in romantic comedy. Here is one of the 2 couples that stood out during the golden age of American films. (Capra, Cukor and Preston Sturges, each in their own styles, also gave us some of the greatest classics in the genre). Here Cooper plays himself, the innocent, sweet and honest man who is incapable of doing a bad deed. He and seven older learned men are trying to assemble a modern encyclopedia in New York City. Their search for the newest street slang causes them run into 'trouble-girl' Stanwyck and her gang.

With touches of gang thriller and romantic comedy, its not very ambitious plot captivates by the sheer charm of its stars and the magical touch of genial Howard Hawks, who has a knack for making great classics look simple and unpretentious.

Capra, Hawks and Cukor; Stewart, Cooper and Grant or Jean Arthur, Barbara Stanwyck and Hepburn... whatever the combination it's always a winner. Truly the stuff classics are made of.

Even if any new edition of this classic is welcome, we must still hope for a better treatment (some extras and better print quality) of this treasure of American movie-making history in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Love and learning.......2007-07-14

This classic has all the right chemistry. You will love the characters, the romance and action. This mixed with Cooper's trademark "shy guy" moves make it a real winner.

4 out of 5 stars Stanwyck and Cooper light up the screen with shades of "Pygmalion" and "Snow White".......2007-06-12

A burlesque performer on the lam becomes the unexpected muse for a strait-laced professor in Billy Wilder's sparkling 1941 comedy, BALL OF FIRE.

When a group of stuffy bachelor professors are compiling a new encyclopedia, they find trouble writing about modern slang. Professor Bertram Potts (Gary Cooper) scouts the streets of New York to find willing people to help in their research. A visit to a nightclub reveals Sugarpuss O'Shea (Barbara Stanwyck) performing the rousing "Drum Boogie". Potts realises that here is the ideal expert who can lead him through the difficult world of the modern speech. But Sugarpuss is being pursued by the police...and the Mob!

Cooper and Stanwyck give off a splendid chemistry here after previously being paired in Frank Capra's Meet John Doe earlier in 1941. Legend has it that Lucille Ball was originally mentioned for the role of Sugarpuss, but it's hard to imagine anyone being better than Stanwyck, who gives a spirited performance (for another slice of Barbara in a similar role, be sure to see the hilarious Barbara Stanwyck: Lady of Burlesque).

The other professors are played by legendary character actors S.Z. "Cuddles" Sakall, Richard Haydn, Oscar Homolka, Henry Travers, Tully Marshall, Aubrey Mather and Leonid Kinskey.

So great to see BALL OF FIRE firmly on DVD. This has been issued as part of the new MGM Movie Classics series along with three other Gary Cooper titles (Casanova Brown, The Wedding Night, and The Adventures of Marco Polo).

(Single-sided, single-layer disc).

2 out of 5 stars I know I'm in the minority here . . ........2007-06-11

. . .but I didn't care that much for "Ball of Fire". I was expecting something like "Bringing Up Baby" or "The Awful Truth"--classic screwball comedies--but "Ball of Fire" just doesn't compare to those two. However, Barbara Stanwyck is marvelous in the film--she's terrific with her comic timing and her flashy clothes. Unfortunately, Gary Cooper is no Cary Grant. His stiff character isn't amusing--and all of the rest of his writing cronies got on my nerves after awhile. I wanted to laugh, but I just didn't find the film all that funny except for a few of Ms. Stanwyck's lines. I give it two stars for her performance--but I'd recommend renting two of her other films--"Christmas in Connecticut" and "Sorry, Wrong Number"--both of which I enjoyed far more than "Ball of Fire".

4 out of 5 stars Ball of Fire.......2007-06-11

This is a remake of a remake, because the plot is so great. The best thing is Danny Kaye did a remake about 9 years later "A Song is Born" - I bought this film so I could watch the 2 together, but "A Song is Born" is only available in VHS. The only problem is it comes in Black and White.

In 1963, Billy Wilder's Irma La Douce was one of the biggest box-office hits of the year, grossing twice as much as The Great Escape and The Birds. Yet this popular movie has been almost completely forgotten by film history, even to fans of Wilder or stars Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine (the same trio had made a masterpiece, The Apartment, three years earlier). It doesn't represent the best work of those legends, but Irma provides tart entertainment. At least some of the movie's popularity can be chalked up to its subject, which was pretty risqué for the time: Lemmon plays a Paris policeman who falls in love with a prostitute (MacLaine). The script was adapted from a stage musical, but Wilder decided to cut the songs, instead developing the humor and romance into his own blend of bittersweet perversity; this Technicolor-fantasy Paris is kind of a dark cousin to Gigi. Lemmon is in his prime period of hand-wringing self-doubt, and MacLaine is perfectly in tune with his rhythms, especially in scenes that add tenderness to the sometimes queasy mix of moods. Ironically--given the nixing of the songs--the film won its only Oscar for André Previn's adaptation of the stage play's music into a wordless orchestral score. --Robert Horton

5 out of 5 stars A Highly Entertaining French Farce.......2007-08-01

An all time tour-de-force for Jack Lemmon and Shirley Maclaine (whose performance was Oscar nominated). Jack plays a poor schnook street cop, who bumbles his way from losing his job to pimping for Irma (Maclaine), the top hooker of the neighborhood, with whom he he falls madly in love. Jealously doing everything he can to prevent Irma from "plying her trade", Lemmon becomes his own rival in this hilarious comedy of bizarre plot twists.

2 out of 5 stars Irma la flop.......2007-04-19

This is one of my least favorite Jack Lemmon movies. The plot was slow, the jokes weren't funny. I don't know, this just didn't do it for me. It didn't seem characteristic of Billy Wilder's usual witty style.

5 out of 5 stars Bette Davis' portrayal of Apple Annie is pure magic!.......2007-03-19

Frank Capra's remake of his 1940 "Lady For A Day," is a mix of a Christmas story, Cinderella, and a 1920's gangster tale, all rolled into one! Bette Davis is excellent as a gin guzzling bag lady named Apple Annie, who has a daughter (named Louise and played sweetly by lovely Ann-Margaret) living in Spain, of whom she has never seen (except for an 8 X 10 photograph that Annie lovingly keeps in her room) since sending her there to be schooled. It isn't clear or even explained how the girl got to Spain or why that particular country was selected for Louise's schooling. Annie sends money to Louise, and collects much of it from her streetwise peddler friends, all of who she has named as Louise's Godparents. When Annie receives a letter from Louise, telling her she is bringing her fiancé' to meet her mother, Annie is devasted! Enter Mob boss "Dave the Dude" (Glenn Ford), his nightclub lady friend Queenie Martin (Hope Lange) and mob clown Peter Falk. Annie's peddler friends, along with Queenie, talk Dave into making Annie a lady of society. Dave pulls some strings and even gets Annie a penthouse suite! "Pocketful of Miracles" is a delightful story filled with sentiment, laughs, and magic! Watch as the gang transforms Annie from a street corner hag into a lady of high society. As mob member Junior delares when first seeing Annie's transformation, "She's like a cockroach what turned into a butterfly." Exactly! Hope Lange is great as Queenie Martin and Glenn Ford's "Dave the Dude" is excellent as the Mob Boss who believes Annie's apples are his key to good luck. This one belongs in every dvd collector's library of classic films, especially fans of Bette Davis and Hope Lange. It's truly special. The dvd transfer is flawless and the audio is good and clear. Dvd includes the movie trailer. This one is especially fun to watch during the Christmas holidays and will put you in the Holiday spirit!

4 out of 5 stars Glenn Ford as a Soft-Hearted Gangster?.......2007-01-30

Ok, I'm not too sure Ford really nails his role, though he certainly tries his best.

But otherwise this is a heartwarming, enjoyable New York-during-the-holidays kind of film, with a stellar cast including Bette Davis in a signature role and a very funny Peter Falk as Ford's "primitive" sidekick.

This film has all of Capra's trademark moments, a wonderful Cinderella story enlivened by the setting and the great supporting characters. Though you could easily trim 20 or so minutes, this film is a treat that has gotten better with age.

5 out of 5 stars Great Acting and Very Fun.......2007-01-29

Wonderful story line that's hard to watch without laughing. Great acting as Glenn Ford and Betty Davis try to pull off a great scam for the benefit of Davis' movie daughter. A great movie for the whole family.

For anyone who wants to catch a glimpse of the Los Angeles "lounge" scene that was in vogue during the early and mid-1990s, here's the movie that virtually defined that brief but colorful nightlife milieu. As an added bonus, it just happens to be a very funny, observant story about love, loss, and male bonding among a group of friends who struggle to find decent jobs by day, and lurk through Hollywood's hottest nightclubs by night. A sort of latter-day Rat Pack, they include Mike (writer-actor Jon Favreau) and his closest buddy, Trent (Vince Vaughn), who are waiting for the big show-biz break that seems to be eluding them. Mike's twisted up about the girlfriend he left back East to pursue his going-nowhere standup comedy career, and Trent uses the word "money" as an adjective ("Man, we look totally money tonight") with such frequency that you may find yourself slipping into lounge-lizard mode after watching the movie. One of the most noteworthy indie-film success stories of the '90s, this time-capsule comedy seized its moment in the spotlight, launched several promising careers, and continues to maintain its lasting appeal. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Sheer Perfection. BIG $$ ain't the key to a good film!.......2007-05-29

Jon Favreau wrote a fantastic script; Doug Liman directed a great flick; Vince Vaughn owned the film. 'Nuf said!

OK, maybe a little more. This has got to be one of, if not THE, greatest indie films of all time.

And, like I said, BIG MONEY doesn't make a great movie. There have been plenty of big dollar box office flops, but you can probably count on 1 hand (maybe 2) the number of films that were made for what equates to peanuts and still totally own every minute on the screen.

This was an instant cult classic, acclaimed by critics, and it got the big-time attention it deserved later on.

Mike, an every day "joe", broke up with his girl, moved to L.A. to be a comedian, and settled in to a long time funk. His "west coast" pals, some real characters (enter Vince Vaughn and Patrick Van Horn), give him all the right advice which Mike uses at the wrong time. His "east coast" pal (Ron Livingston) tries to keep Mike grounded.

But, basically what you get is a train wreck in the love department, backlit by the glitz of Vegas and the back-alley bar scene of L.A. Anyone can relate to Mike and most of us have had moments like the other guys too.

Just check out this movie. A review or summary just can't do it justice. It is intelligent, sappy (in a good way), relatable and HILARIOUS.

FYI, great soundtrack to boot.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific "old school" feel good movie!.......2007-05-28

Great movie, with lots of one-liners, and a must-see for the serious Vince Vaughn fan. Jon Favreau is perfect as his buddy, Mike, whose lines in the movie cannot be forgotten. Captures the ideal late '90's swing era to a T.

5 out of 5 stars Go, Daddy-O!.......2007-05-24

Few films have explored the pain of being a 20-something single as hilariously as Doug Liman's classic "Swingers." If you've never seen this film, which packs a bevy of memorable scenes and spawned several catch phrases ("You're so money!"), it's high time you checked it out.

"Swingers" follows the ups and downs (mostly downs) of Mike (Jon Favreau), a struggling actor who has recently moved to Los Angeles from New York. When he moved, he left behind a girlfriend of six years, and he hasn't been able to get her off his mind, a problem that's exasperated by his lack of success on the L.A. singles scene.

Fortunately for Mikey, he's got some buddies who are bent on cheering him up, most notably the smooth-talking Trent (Vince Vaughn), who convinces Mike to make an impromptu trip to Vegas to wash away his problems with gambling, women and booze. It's the first of many unsuccessful (and roaringly funny) forays into the singles scene for Mikey, who is alternately too nice, too nervous, and too neurotic to achieve any level of success with the ladies.

This sort of material has been mined with much less success by many movies, but "Swingers" has three noteworthy forces working for it: star Favreau's superb script, a great cast and Liman's top-notch direction.

The witty screenplay delivers enough laughs and memorable lines to reward repeat viewings, from Trent's boast that he's going to "Find me two cocktail waitresses and pull me a Fredo" to a hilarious conversation between Mike, Trent and the rest of the crew about how long you should wait before calling a girl whose "digits" you got.

Liman, who also directed the excellent "Go," throws in a a number of deft touches that add to the script. Check out the slo-mo walking scene that's an amusing homage to Quentin Tarantino's "Reservoir Dogs." Or the unusual imagery complete with "Jaws" music to illustrate Trent's growing discomfort with a girl he just met.

The ensemble cast is terrific, with special kudos to the two leads, Favreau and Vaughn. Favreau is outstanding as the lovable nice-guy loser Mike, giving a deeply funny and even touching performance. Case in point: Mike's ill-advised attempt to leave a message on the answering machine of a hottie he met just a few hours before. As the womanizing Trent, Vaughn exudes star charisma, delivering his lines with flair without falling into cartoonish excess.

Despite its low budget and unknown (at the time) director and cast, "Swingers" became a modest indie hit. Now, a decade after its release, great word-of-mouth buzz has transformed it into a deserving cult classic.

4 out of 5 stars A fair treatise on the random order of Life.......2007-05-12

The turbulence, despair, and despondency of navigating the multiple persons that occupy the space between significant relationships is obvious in this film. Although the production of this movie is fair, the arbitrary chance at play in meeting someone of significance is painfully well-represented here. Although I think this movie gets better with a second view, and it is a possible "sleeper", I would not consider it as part of a "Collector's Series" - seems like a stretch, an overzealous marketing effort.

French director Eric Rohmer, former critic and Cahiers du Cinema editor, created a very special romantic film series around the difficult choices men make when they fall in love with two women called "Six Moral Tales." My Night at Maud's was the third entry, and it was so well received in 1969 that it gave Rohmer international prominence. To this day, it remains Rohmer's masterpiece, a brilliantly insightful and sublime meditation on adult indiscretions. Jean-Louis Trintignant plays a chaste engineer who thinks he's met his soul mate in church (Marie-Christine Barrault), yet winds up accidentally spending the night with the seductive Maud (Francoise Fabian), who is more his intellectual equal. Filmed in stark black and white by Nestor Almendros, this is one of those rare films in which questions about philosophy translate into unexpected answers about the heart. It's slow and methodical, but well worth the experience. --Bill Desowitz

4 out of 5 stars Essential French cinema: Rohmer's 'Ma nuit chez Maud.'.......2007-07-24

Éric Rohmer (1920) challenged traditional Hollywood cinema with his French New Wave cycle of films, Six Moral Tales ("Contes moraux"). Inspired by F.W. Murnau's Sunrise, each "tale" follows the same basic story: a man is tempted a woman, but he ultimately resists the temptation.

My Night at Maud's (Ma nuit chez Maud) (1969)--the third tale in the series, but the fourth to be filmed, has been called "the centerpiece" of Rohmer's Moral Tales. Filmed in stark black and white, it follows deep philosophic conversations about love and religion between a pious Catholic engineer in his early thirties, Jean-Louis (Jean-Louis Trintignant), and a young brunette divorcée, Maud (Françoise Fabian)--a seductive freethinker who challenges Jean-Louis' rigid ethical standards. An Official Selection at the Cannes Film Festival, Rohmer achieved international recognition with this brilliant film.

5 out of 5 stars The head vs. the heart.......2005-10-26

Eric Rohmer's intelligent look at the subject of principles vs. intuition. A mathemetician (Jean-Louis) meets an old school chum (Vidal), a philosopher, and they begin a conversation about Pascal and mind over heart and faithfulness. The conversation continues at Vidal's girlfriend's (Maud) house.

Suddenly our mathemetician is left alone with the Maud, and she invites him to spend the night with her. He accepts but is determined not to sleep with her to maintain his priciples, and in a very funny scene he's successful. After a while he marries Francoise; 5 years later he meets Maud again and learns, by accident, that Francoise was once Maud's husband's lover.

Typical for a Rohmer film, not much happens, but there's lots of talk of a very high quality. But it's not JUST talk - Rohmer is skilled enough not to forget he's making a movie here. He is very on target as his characters explore the topics at hand. It's a very satisfying movie, well worth a watch.

5 out of 5 stars Fourth opus: the supreme expression of good taste!.......2005-08-03

Eric Rohmer' s artistic personality has been one of the most original and eloquent. Expressive sobriety supported by a high caliber humor sense. In this lovable and intelligent work, the seduction issue has never been treated, as an admirable exercise of seduction that links with the purest tradition of the French theater of old ages, plenty of irony, sarcasm and fine charm.
Indeed, the picture is extremely talky, and slow paved in consequence; Rohmer supports on an elegant and smart script plenty of fine intelligence; it's the art of the seduction in its highest order.

4 out of 5 stars An unforgettable ending.......2005-03-26

I must have watched this film at least twenty times--it never gets boring. A lot of talking in this film--if you don't know French, have fun reading the relentless subtitles. Interesting dialog about Pascal--the idea of fate, luck, wager. It serves as the film's allegory--gambling on a relationship with a person who is both sensual and pious. Can there be happiness in such a combination? One has to only take a chance. And even though you may think you found that special someone with both attributes, there's always a catch. And the catch in "...Maud's" is revealed at the end of the film--which is absolutely beautiful. The DVD is not as bad as some of the reviews here claim it to be--it's black and white, so with the exception of a couple of scenes with weak contrasts, I think it's an above average transfer. Heck, it's shot by Cuba's very own Oscar winner Nestor Almendros (Days of Heaven).

5 out of 5 stars This film is so tight!.......2003-11-27

Sublime. To me, this stealthily thrilling film exploits both the living quality of a theatrical performance and the privileged intimacy that cinema offers -- close-ups, mobile perspectives, and so on. Rohmer's tale seems put together to resemble a peculiarly intrusive documentary, an impossibly close piece of observational cinema. Half the joy of experiencing his fiction stems from the convincing impression that one is (secretly) watching a group of interesting adults socializing spontaneously in the manner of their culture and class. The other half of one's pleasure lies in the awareness, as the film concludes, that an intricate and subtle structure has been unfolding and cleverly weaving the tale's elements together all along. Rohmer's film works on several levels, and is well worth viewing by the socially curious and the open-minded.

This DVD explores Juvenile Delinquency in all its forms and what could be done to counter its effects in the 1940s to 1960s. The films explore gang violence, bullying, the effects of childhood anger, vandalism, cheating, knife fighting and more. While the films are very simplistic when compared to our modern troubles (i.e. more guns, drugs, violence, etc. than back then), the DVD still offers a very good presentation of the roots of juvenile delinquency and shows specific steps that could be taken to ward off bad influences at an early age. The films are simultaneously quite entertaining and educational. Here are all the films that make up this historical collection: A Chance to Play (1950) - Sound, Black & White Run time: 18:05; Boy with a Knife (1956) - Sound, Black & White Run time: 19:15; Cheating (1952) - Sound, Black & White Run time: 11:00; Ask Me, Don't Tell Me (1961) - Sound, Black & White Run time: 20:55; What About Juvenile Delinquency? This is a funny, albeit totally off-the-wall comedy, but fans of TV's Twin Peaks, and fans of Kimmy Robertson have made this film famous because of her ultra-rare fully nude scene where an orphan takes her picture as she's getting into the shower.
