American pioneers were a strong-willed people ruled by wanderlust, optimism, and an intense drive to persevere and succeed in the face of incredible odds and grave danger. Based on the autobiographical novels by Laura Ingalls Wilder, this 255-minute 2004 Disney television miniseries (not the Michael Landon, Melissa Gilbert series from the 1970's) tells Laura's story of her family's dangerous and exhausting journey by covered wagon from an economically depressed Wisconsin to the promising land of Kansas. While the land proves plentiful in Kansas, the hardships of setting up a homestead and co-existing with the Indians are intense. Through their struggles, the Ingalls family comes to appreciate the true value of the help and companionship of their fellow man and realizes the relative insignificance of their many outward differences. While their neighbor Mrs. Scott and most of the rest of their American contemporaries readily stereotype the Indians as an evil race devoid of redeeming qualities, the Ingalls are more compassionate, presuming the Indian population to be comprised of both good and bad people. The Ingalls family's tolerance for the Indians allows them to peacefully co-exist on the prairie for a time and engenders a tenuous sense of respect with one influential tribe member which serves the family well. Little House on the Prairie brings the Laura Ingalls Wilder books and the westward expansion of the American pioneers to life and is recommended viewing for ages 6 and older. --Tami Horiuchi
Description
Marking a return to the autobiographical books by renowned author Laura Ingalls Wilder, Disney's epic production of LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE celebrates the magnificent and heartwarming story of a pioneer family's brave travels into the untamed American heartland. The majesty and grandeur of the frontier come alive with breathtaking cinematography and a host of classic characters. Disney's critically acclaimed miniseries chronicles the magical adventures of the Ingalls family as they stake their claim to a rugged parcel of land on the Kansas prairie. Their exciting journey brings them face-to-face with mysterious Indians, wild animals and their peculiar new neighbors, Mr. and Mrs. Scott. Spend some quality time with "a fine family drama," says the New York Daily News. Presented on two DVDs, LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE is hours of rousing entertainment for everyone.
Customer Reviews:
Disney, after decades, you finally did it right!.......2007-04-27
Is this really a Disney production? Seriously! Really? For the first time in many, many years you did ol' Walt justice!
This is a fine example of how to do a period TV series correctly. If you are a fan of the original "Little House" series (and a very good series at that!), you will notice a distinct difference between this version and the Michael Landon version. This newer one is, from what I have read, very close to Mrs. Wilder's original stories. It's this version of "Little House on the Prairie" that you will find a very realistic account of pioneer life in the latter part of the 19th century, accurately portraying what it was like to leave a comfortable setting with family and friends about, to traveling to begin life anew hundreds of miles away. Cut off from all they knew as well as having their nearest neighbors quite a distance away, the Ingalls family learn to survive on their wits and skills, coming across the local (angry) Indians, meeting a life-loving free spirit, as well as a rather curt couple from Scotland.
Traveling by wagon was a trying experience, and this series shows that very well. Through cold weather, crossing a frozen river, rainstorms, the family made it after two months to their land in Kansas. You will find realistic portrayals of continued hardships and illnesses.
The Indians are seen from three different angles: the Scott's hate the savages and want them all dead; The Ingalls' feel that all people - no matter what race - have good and bad in them, and that the Indians are NOT savages and should receive the respect deserved to all folks; and Mr. Edwards is somewhere in between. Not PC, but not far right, either. It also hints of the atrocities that the American government did to the Indians, and also shows that the government screwed the white folks as well.
Except for Charles' extremely white teeth, all of the actors fit the time portrayed very well, including dirty and unkempt hair for the women, burly men who, you can just tell, smelled like they haven't showered in years, and even folks with foreign accents - something rarely seen in film versions of our earlier American history.
Fear of the unknown, concern over food (or lack thereof), the sounds on the prairie at night, the solitude of pioneer life, the fact that one had to be of a tough stock to handle all that came, hopes and dreams - this version of Little House actually puts meat on the bones of not just the Ingalls family, but of all American Pioneers.
I only wish the ratings were higher when originally shown on ABC TV back in 2005 so it could have been made into a weekly series. But then, it probably would have gone down hill after a few more episodes like so many others have. Better that we have the best.
My six year old daughter, sixteen year old son, and this 45 year old reviewer all thought this was a super series!
Too scary for my kids.......2007-02-17
This movie shows a very grim picture of the difficult times faced by the Ingalls family. While the cinematography was often stunning, it was simply too scary for my 7 and 10 year olds, and my 5 year old had no interest in the movie at all. Having just completed reading the entire Little House series of books to my kids, I would say they were much better off using thier own imaginations to envision what Laura Ingalls shared with us about this period her life. As a child, I loved the Michael Landon TV series and my children love it as well. It doesn't bother me that the episodes rarely accurately follow the story lines of the books, as it is instead like a continuation of the stories, depicting things that could easily have happened to the family. I find these shows much more suitable for my young children than the Disney movie.
Great family movie.......2007-01-20
Watched this on TV--was waiting for it to come out on DVD. Bought it and loved it especially watching it with my granddaughters.
little house fans?.......2006-12-01
Though i enjoyed this mini series (i HATED the old one in the 70's)
it generaly stayed on the ball with what was happening in laura's life
i missed a few scenes and the small bull dog discribed in the book
BUT
the BIGGEST flaw (wich i'm surprised no one has mentioned before me)
IT'S MISSING A CHARATER!!! LAURA'S LITTLE SISTER CARRIE!!!
i don't understand why the producers excluded her but right away i felt something was amiss and wheni figured out what it was it bothered me the rest of the time.
over all a good movie thogh
The Little House on the Prarie.......2006-11-04
This is a great film when your in the mood for it. I like that it has been made to be close to the actual book. It is long if you try to watch it at once but it is broken up well to watch it in sections. When I watched it seemed as though it was exactly as I had imagined when I was reading the book. The parents parts were played really well. The end of the story was a bit flat. I would've liked to see further.

Walnut Grove Meets Johnny Cash...........2003-06-13
This review refers to the Goodtimes DVD edition of "Little House On The Prairie - 'The Collection'"......
When I first saw this DVD, as I was browsing through the Little House Series here, for a brief moment I thought this was a collection of several episodes of the series. It is not. "The Collection" is the title of this wonderful episode that adds a little pizzaz with guest stars Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash.
Johnny and June play Caleb and Mattie Hodgekiss, a struggling couple, who are so down on their luck, that Kaleb decides to take advantage of poor ailing Reverend Alden. Alden on a mission to help the town of Graves Corners after a devastating fire, falls ill and is rescued by Caleb and cared for by Mattie. Caleb takes the Reverend's clothes and poses as Alden's helper, travels to Walnut Grove, where he convinces all the good people there that he is collecting donations, all the while planning to keep it for himself. What Caleb doesn't foresee is the friendship he forms with all the generous and loving people there. Will Mattie be able to stop him? Will Mary speak up when she sees through him? Will Caleb see the error of his ways? Well It is after all "Little House on the Prairie"!
I enjoyed this episode very much. As many of the Little House episodes do, it had a message, was heartwarming, it made me smile and with this one there's a bonus.....Johnny Sings!
Goodtimes Video has brought several of these episodes to DVD and VHS and I hope there will be more. This DVD has a nice clear picture with good color and sound. Very good for a nearly 30 year old TV program! "The Collection" runs about 50 minutes, and for the price if you love these stories and know you will purchase more, you may want to consider a 2 pack or even the 4 pack. The 4 pack available now includes this one plus these three touching double features..."The Premier Movie"(The pilot..The Ingalls travel to Kansas), "The Lord is My Shepherd"(little Laura runs away to be closer to God) and "Laura Ingalls Wilder"(Laura and Almanzo marry).
This series stands the test of time. They will be a treat for generations to come for the whole family!
enjoy....Laurie
"Well, you sure got religion awful sudden.".......2001-08-24
Unfortunately, many classic episodes that might have been restored to DVD were abandoned in favor of this single episode featuring stars Johnny and June Carter Cash. "The Collection" clearly made it to DVD on star power alone, since the story isn't a vital one to the _Little House_ bigger picture. Reverend Alden becomes ill after encountering a settlement ravaged by prairie fire and is found by Caleb Hodgekiss (Cash) and his wife. Alden explains that he is from Walnut Grove and is on his way there to collect donations for the folks at the settlement, Graves Corner, who have lost everything they have. Considering himself and his wife more needy than anyone in Graves Corner, Hodgekiss goes to Walnut Grove on an "errand of mercy" to collect the items himself, fully intending to flee with his wife and the collection before anyone suspects him. I was surprised to find that Cash actually did a halfway decent job of showing his character's evolution from determined con man to uncertain, softening guy-in-need. The ending is predictable as one would expect from this show, but not altogether lame. Overall, not one I would have personally chosen to promote to DVD immortality, but definitely a watchable hour of _Little House on the Prairie._
Childhood Memories.......2001-07-22
This DVD brings back such wonderful memories for me. I used to watch Little House on the Prarie all the time when I was young, except the DVD is a much clearer version! I am so glad I am able to see this show again and relive the happiness it brought to me so many years ago.
