The Crow set the standard for dark and violent comic-book movies (like Spawn or director Alex Proyas's superior follow-up, Dark City), but it will forever be remembered as the film during which star Brandon Lee (son of martial arts legend Bruce Lee) was accidentally killed on the set by a loaded gun. The filmmakers were able to digitally sample what they'd captured of Lee's performance and piece together enough footage to make the movie releasable. Indeed, it is probably more fascinating for that post-production story than for the tale on the screen. The Crow is appropriately cloaked in ominous expressionistic shadows, oozing urban dread and occult menace from every dank concrete crack, but it really adds up to a simple and perfunctory tale of ritual revenge. Guided by a portentous crow (standing in for Poe's raven), Lee plays a deceased rock musician who returns from the grave to systematically torture and kill the outlandishly violent gang of hoodlums who murdered him and his fiancée the year before. The film is worth watching for its compelling visuals and genuinely nightmarish, otherworldly ambience. --Jim Emerson

Customer Reviews:
The only one.......2007-09-16
This is the original based from the comic by James O'Barr. This is the only one worth watching the following sequels are a joke. Brandon Lee is spectacular. A gothic love story, a beautiful, endearing character, and a love that stands up to death.
Very good flick.......2007-09-16
This to me is Brandon Lee's best movie. I also feel its the best of the Crow series from what I remember. I dont remember the other ones very well because it was so long ago. But I did like this one the most.
This is just a tale of revenge plain and simple. A guy and his girlfriend was ambushed by thugs. They were both killed in the incident but he was revived into something close to an immortal. This takes place in the city and the setting is very dark. It has great action and a straight forward plot. The soundtrack is very good also.
If you love action then this could be the flick for you. Just make sure the volume is up.
the crow.......2007-09-15
Out of all the Brandon Lee movie's I feel that this was his best. This movie has all the elements of a good movie, comedy, romance, thrill and of course action. This would have been Brandon's big movie to make him a big star if he would have lived.
The most of the movie is very dark and quite entertaining. I really recommend this movie to anyone who likes a good movie
The Film Brandon Lee died on .......2007-09-07
The only reason I even know about this film is because of the tragic death of it's star Brandon Lee.I watched for that reason to see Brandon in his last screen role, I was suprised to find that I really enjoyed this film.It has everything a movie could have action, comedy, drama, horror, and a tragic love story.I think that this was a ground breaking film as far as effect go shot reminicent of the first Batman film so the visuals alone are a reason to watch the film not including the stuff I mentioned above so if you are in the mood for a moody superhero movie check this out.
One not to have in your collection.......2007-09-03
I have viewed the The Crow when it was first release at the theater and later on two different formats VHS and laser Disc, both formats as good as there were at the time, don't come close as good as on DVD.
The colors were as close as you can get on the big screen (in a theater setting).
The Crow is formatted for 16X9 wide screen TVs which is must for those of you who don't have a wide screen television to enjoy the full color and dramatic impact this movie makes. Scenes with dark areas, stood out with clarity, even with scenes that had too much Red satuation were reduce to give a clearer picture.
DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1 were a added bonus to a great movie as it was met to be heard. So have your volume crack up and enjoy the sound track that plays in the back ground, you won't be disappointed.

Description
Like most 12-year-olds, Niles and Holland like to get into mischief. The only problem is when Holland gets into mischief, people have a funny way of "accidentally" dying. Niles knows that Holland is responsible for all the gruesome accidents happening in the neighborhood - the pitchfork hidden in the hay, the severed finger in the box, the baby in the wine barrel. He knows but dare not tell anyone, not even his beloved grandmother Ada (Uta Hagen), that Holland is the evil twin¿or is he?
Customer Reviews:
If you've seen it once: it will never leave you.......2007-08-13
Interesting suspense film along the lines of movies like "The Bad Seed", this effective little shocker that evolved from the early 1970s is surprisingly a good movie. I wasn't expecting much from it, and the cover of the DVD led me to believe it was something along the lines of "The Omen", but I was pleasantly surprised with how the film turned out. It's an effective little horror movie with plenty of twists and turns, a clever script, and some pretty good acting. Set in an unnamed American farming township in 1935, the story revolves around eleven-year-old Niles Perry and his identical twin brother Holland. Portrayed by can't-tell-'em-apart twins Chris and Martin Udvarnoky, Niles and Holland are part of an extended family whose matriarch is Ada (legendary German actress Uta Hagen). The boys' father is dead, and their mother (Diana Muldaur) spends most of her screen time traipsing dourly about the homestead.
From the get-go, Niles is obviously the well-behaved one of the two, as well as the 'follower' in their relationship. Holland resorts to various mischief, often landing his twin into trouble in his stead. There's some sort of family heirloom in a clandestine tobacco tin which Holland has apparently relinquished to Niles, who doesn't seem to want it. A traveling circus comes to the area, featuring a sleight-of-hand magician who inspires the boys. Ada is a wisened old Russian immigrant, and she shares a special bond with Niles which seems to be clairvoyant in nature. When the twins' mother is paralyzed in a tragic fall after confronting them about the mysterious heirloom, Ada realizes that she must set right a great evil which she had unknowingly set off some time before. And although Holland appears to be at the center of the misdeeds afoot here, Niles must confront his own participation in the events which have shaped the present scenario.
The murderous "accidents" telegraphed in "The Other" are few and bloodless. This is not a graphic film by any means. But it is certainly horrific, at least during the second act. Once again, you'll find yourself musing, "Wait....this is rated PG ?!?" I my respects to the late Victor French (known more affectionately to TV audiences as Mr. Edwards on "Little House On The Prairie") as a crazed farm-hand who figures in strongly during the blood-freezing finale. You may also recognize a young John Ritter who makes a couple small and modest appearances through out the film. The real-life twins are excellent in this film. It's really a shame that this was their only film.
The term "psychological thriller" was coined a long time ago, probably by some filmmaker who wanted a more dignified label for the horror flick he was shooting at the time. "The Other" is all of the above. It plumbs the depths of psychological dysfunction and murderous illusion while convincingly illustrating the look and the lay of 1935 Americana, much like Mulligan's job on "Mockingbird" ten years prior. It snares, ingratiates, rivets, shocks and then horrifies you. And it got a PG. Only in 1972, I guess....
Disturbing.......2007-07-09
I saw this movie in the theater when it first came out, and it creeped me out to this day. I won't spoil the plot for you but please notice I gave it five stars. If you are into psychological thrillers and whodunits, this is for you.
There is no axe-wielding maniac or alien monster to be found. The monsters in this story are all too human, which makes it all the more terrifying.
The ending will make you gasp...
UPDATE: Just received my copy of the DVD and I was very disappointed in the jacket/flyer which gives away the whole story. If you buy this DO NOT READ THE LINER NOTES BEFORE SEEING THE MOVIE
Creepy psychological horror.......2007-06-27
The Other is a classic horror story that is pure psychological terror. It is slowly paced, but this is necessary for the character & plot development. The story is set in rural Connecticut in the 1940s, and revolves around the Perry clan...the central characters are the young Perry twins, 11-year old Hammond and Niles Perry who frolic in the sun and enjoy games as boys do, but there is more to it than that, of course. Amidst this idyllic setting, a series of family tragedies takes place...the Perry's father has died of an accident, the mother is rendered an invalid due to some sort of mental breakdown, and there are more tragedies to follow. The only adult that seems to have an inkling of what's going on is Uta Hagen's grandmother character, who teaches Niles 'the game' which reveals darker undertones as the story moves along...we see a golden-haired boy who seems harmless enough on the surface but as time progresses, something darker is revealed, leaving us reeling when the truth is revealed [though it doesn't take too long for the viewer to deduce what is actually unfolding here]. Is it a case of evil vs good twin, split personality or unnatural forces at work? Not to give too much away, let's just say that this movie is a first-rate psychological horror movie that has moments that will give you the creeps. The actor who plays Niles Perry does an excellent job of portraying a tormented soul, and Uta Hagen is wonderful as the all-seeing grandmother that is torn between her love for her grandson and the need to put a stop to the horrors unfolding around her. This is a must-see for fans of atmospheric horror with a psychological twist.
Not for the faint of heart!!.......2007-06-23
Not your typical kind of horror movie. This isn't a slasher or gore type of horror movie, but a psycholigical horror movie. The movie gives that 'warm and sunny' feeling like some stories start out as, but as the movie unravels everything begins to turn grey, dark and depressing. Everything isn't as it seems and as the plot thickens you are surprised with a twist.
I'm going to try not to spoil the plot for you, but I urge you not to watch this in the dark or alone. If you are into being scared or psychologically sickened then this is the movie for you. I only gave this movie three stars because the end still makes me sick to my stomach.
Beautiful Horror Film.......2007-04-01
You can tell this film was made by Robert Mulligan. Dripping with atmosphere and timelessness, remember To Kill A Mockingbird. Many people of the younger set will not get the slow pacing and realism. The horror films of today rely very little on actual character development and storyline. They want their blood and they want it now. This film is scary because it never lets go of its innocent eeriness. These two boys? Is he a ghost,is he a psychopath with a split personality? What is this magical power? Is it just a game of imagination or can he become something other? I love this film because of the genuine creepiness.Far superior to The Sixth Sense or even in my mind Psycho. This is what true horror is about, the everyday psychological mystery. Stephen King has yet to write such a work, The Dead Zone comes the closest. This film had an impact similar to Black Christmas and Repulsion but more realistic in tone. In the end, I still am not sure what brother was evil to begin with.

Customer Reviews:
GOOD THRILLER ! REMAKE OF "THE BAD SEED " ?.......2007-08-13
I must be getting soft in my old age as I did not like this film all that much years ago when I saw it for the first time. The biggest problem for me is that they really push the believability factor in this one towards the end of this film. Culkin and Wood turn in good performances and it does deliver enough thrills to hold the viewer for the 86 minute running time. Not a bad thriller which is basically a remake of "The Bad Seed". The DVD transfer is good.
a big shock for Mac fans.......2007-07-15
I go back and forth with this film. I've liked it, hated it and loved it.
I saw this in theatres at 13, I'm 26 now, and let me tell ya, the impact of it is still very profound. Macaulay or Mac Culkin should not have been
ignored in this film, in fact, he should've gotten an oscar nod, because he played his role very well, he may not have liked this role, and off and
on, neither did I, but I got over that. This film showed his expansive potential as an actor, and for that, he should be thankful. Elijah Wood also did a very nice job. Joseph Ruben did a good direction, and the music
was effectively moody. For obvious reasons, this film is not for his young fans. True, the ending is a shock, but so is the car-crash scene w/
the evil smile on his face. This film is very disturbing, but very well done.
The Good Son.......2007-02-07
I selected 5 stars because it is the best for the movie. I watched the movie. It was a good movie. I loved it.
The title is the opposite 5/5 stars.......2006-12-20
This was a really good and creepy movie for people who like movies with a creepy child who likes to murder his family mostly thats not for me but I liked this movie it was really good but kind of short. If you loved macaulay culkin in home alone then see this movie where he lurks as the son of satan who tries to murder his sister and his mom really creepy movie.
THE GOOD SON ROCKS.......2006-10-26
when i saw this movie i was just like "this is Mcauley's best work".my favorite part was the bridge scene.the end sucks though(in my moms thought).but i personally liked the ending.i could watch this movie 5 times in a row, just like i give it 5 stars.

Customer Reviews:
Loved It! Great Job!!!.......2007-08-19
I loved this movie. It's all about perspective. The love story touched my heart and the chemistry between Boreanaz and Furlong's charachters was awesome. Many people make judgments from a very narrow-minded view of expectation. My outlook comes by simply watching this movie as an entity in and of itself, without thinking that this better be here and that better be there, or it will suck. There is a definite interesting tone here that will be missed by the over-judging skeptic... and that would be a shame, since it really proves for an entertaining ride when allowed to be enjoyed to its fullest. And for the main character, Eddie Furlong makes for a wonderful Crow... Looks, acting, the whole bit... Job well done!
If there were a couple things I could really change, though, it would be to clarify two things: First, the explanation of what actually happened to precious Brewster, Jimmy's beloved dog. I think it is insinuated that Brewster ran off (after not recognizing Jimmy and fearing The Crow) and was ultimately taken in by someone else in the community, but it is never actually expressed and leaves it as a bit of a question mark... And Second, express why Jimmy and Lily never told anyone in the community the reason he killed the guy.
That aside, it is definitely worth the money to buy and time to sit back and immerse oneself in. I am very glad to add this to my DVD collection.
Top 5 worst movies of all time........2007-03-08
This movie is awful, I still can't believe I paid money for it. I want the last two hours of my life back! The good; The concept was really cool, it had real potential and David Boreanez was great. The Bad; The storyline was terrible, aimless and not really cohesive. The acting was awful... the casting was just as bad. The soundtrack wasnt bad but could have been much better, like it didn't quite do the job. The writing and directing was what really made this movie a winner. It was like someone handed the story to a 14 year old kid with no vision. BAD BAD BAD. The really sad thing is this could have been a really great movie, and no, budgeting wasnt the problem. The fight scenes were ok, its just the rest was ridiculous, it just needed half their actors replaced and a director with much more talent. Really a shame.
Did they set out to make a bad movie........2007-02-07
Let me say that I am a big fan of B movies, but this didn't even make that high of grade! The plot was confusing and I never came to care about any of the charecters. Save your money, hit your head against a wall you get get more enjoyment out of that.
Crow movies mixed into one..........2007-01-22
All in all, this movie did not reach out and grab me like the Crow movies of old. It fails to produce a feeling of realism....too much sex talk, too little action...Looking forward to the next one, if there is one...
this film is being highly un-recognized.......2007-01-16
If you were going into this film thinking it's going to be as great as the first one then you'll probably end up disappointed. I've seen alot of bad reviews on this film but this film of all the Crow films is only one that shows any depth to the villains! The story is believeable, the problem is the low budget that made the fight scenes kinda phony cause they could've been alot more realistic & the dance to revive the crow was a little weird but it suited the film none-the-less! another part of the problem was Luke(David Boreanaz) channelling Satan towards the end of the film, his acting started to get over-the-top but thankfully, it didn't last too long. & Dennis Hopper was also a mis-cast here delivering gangsta lingo that doesn't suit the film at all. however, there is alot to like about this film at the same time! unlike the rest of the films, we get flashbacks of Luke's & Lola's(Tara Reid) life, showing why they would be doing the things they are doing now!
Now to the plot: After mining shaft is shut down to build a casino, gang members decide to take revenge & the lead member(Luke) looks to literally raise hell! The protagonist in this film, Jimmy Cuervo(Furlong) is anything but a hero. an ex-con who murdered a guy who was trying to rape Jimmy's girlfriend when in his teens. He is hated by many in town except for Lily(Emmanuelle Chriqui) who sees the good inside of him & is the only thing that keeps him from remaining sane throughout the film! if not for Lily, Jimmy himself would probably be aiding Luke in causing terror around the town. One day, Jimmy goes to propose to his girlfriend when Luke & Lola show up and murder the two of them for a ritual that will help Lola see the future and like Lily used to, she can see the good & bad in people! Luke, on the other hand, becomes amazingly powerful through this ritual. shortly after, Jimmy is revived by the Crow & is deeply torn. He doesn't want to be alive, he wants to be with Lily. the first thing he does is try to kill himself but finds himself invinceable. so with nothing left to do, he decides to take his revenge against Luke & save many lives that Luke is planning to take. but he'll need some help after Luke kills the crow that's keeping him here.
the acting: Edward Furlong- He has the best role here and delivers a powerful performance as Jimmy/The Crow! I think he saved the movie for the most part as he delivered a few good lines that were spot on!
David Boreanaz- Falls apart with his Satan channelling like I said above but the majority of the film is does an excellent job conveying the good & bad in Luke! he shows real depth though not as good as he was on Angel, he does a fine job!
Tara Reid- People should give her credit for trying something different! I thought she did a fine job cause her character shows alot of depth throughout the story! I don't know why anyone doubts her talent here, most of the people I talked were surprised how good she was! I didn't expect anything from so this was a definite surprise!
Emmanuelle Chriqui- Owns this film! without her, Edward's performance wouldn't have meant so much. the two of them can balance out and hold the film together for some of the best scenes in this film have the two of them in it! She's a hell of an actress and does an excellent job conveying the heart & soul her character needed! she shows true passion for the role! too bad I couldn't say the same about the next actor.
Dennis Hopper- I said it before, I'll say it again: No to the gangsta lingo. wasn't his choice but still, out of place, it was just ridiculous.
Macy Gray- Brief & unimportant role in this film. she's not very good either. thank God her role doesn't last more then a minute, otherwise, I would've hated this film.
The rest of the cast is virtually unknown's, to me anywayz. they are all fairly convincing!
The Soundtrack- Ok, this film is set in the desert. would be so ridiculous to have rock tracks in this film. wouldn't suit it at all. instead, they have all instrumental, very unique music that suits the setting perfectly! I'm actually disappointed they didn't have a soundtrack for this movie.
anywayz, I think the acting, the settings, the soundtrack & for the most part, the plot, held this film together! the plot in this film, mine closed to build a casino brings depth to the film that makes everything in this film seem more real! this is a good film, might not be everyone's cup of tea but cause of the low budget and the stupid Luke zooming everywhere toward the end of the movie, it looks worse then it is and people therefore will give it a low rating. but there's alot to like about and I DO RECOMMEND it!

Writer-director Rowdy Herrington takes innocence, guilt, ambition, and morality, and twists them into a suspenseful, seductive spiral that can't help but suck you in. When defense attorney Russell Lawson (Cuba Gooding Jr.) realizes his client (Eric Stoltz) is guilty, he turns on him mid-trial--a move that costs him both the case and his career. Disbarred and disheartened, he retreats to Key West, where he meets a peculiar retired teacher named Christopher Marlowe and the film's roller coaster ride begins. In a quick reversal of fortune, Lawson makes an ethical compromise and becomes wildly successful--and then just as suddenly becomes a fugitive from the law, trying to track down a murderer before being tracked down himself. Gooding's constant voice-overs tend to distract from the story rather than add to it; however, his down-home earnestness makes him a good foil for a cranky cop (Tom Berenger) who appears to be more interested in making an arrest than in finding the truth. But then nothing here is what it first appears to be, and although Herrington leaves just enough clues for the astute viewer to pick up on the film's central metaphor, the conclusion still manages to surprise. With such a talented cast and tight writing, it's hard to fathom why A Murder of Crows didn't do better in theaters. At least on video the film, like Lawson, is given a second chance. --Larisa Lomacky Moore

A Murder of Crows (Rowdy Herrington, 1999)
Herrington, best known for the Patrick Swayze vehicle Road House, turns in a by-the-numbers thriller here. Not awful, but not great, either. Lawson Russell (Cuba Gooding, Jr.) is a recently-disbarred lawyer who got the ax after recusing himself from the trial of Thurman Parks III (Eric Stoltz), a slimeball even Russell can't bring himself to defend. A year later, low on cash and running a fishing boat in the Florida Keys, working on his perpetually-unfinished novel, he meets an old man with the improbable name of Christopher Marlowe who wants him to read over a manuscript. He goes to return it the next day and finds the old man has died of a heart attack, so Russell appropriates the manuscript, which of course becomes a smash success-- after which Rusell becomes the target of obsessive-cop stereotype Clifford Dubose (Tom Berenger), because all the murders in the book Russell appropriated really happened, and now he's the prime suspect. I'm pretty sure you can figure out what happens from there.
It's mildly amusing, and good acting is turned in by Stoltz, Gooding, and Berenger, though they have little to do other than play cardboard cutouts. Ashley Laurence also shows up as Gooding's publisher, and any excuse to see Ashley Laurence on a screen is worth your time; it's got an empty-calories feel to it, however, and a few days after seeing it, you're likely to start wondering if you remember certain details (say, for example, the entire last half-hour of the film) correctly. ** ½
Deceptive? Trap.......2007-01-16
Lawson Russell (Cuba Gooding Jr.) lawyer and aspiring writer is critiquing book for an aged man who dies. There he comes in position of a manuscript for a novel about several lawyers being murdered. He published it as his own. His novel is a great success.
There is only one catch; these were real deaths and only the writer of the novel could have known the details. So the writer must be the murderer.
To further complicate things there is no record of the dead novelist.
We have seen this primes several times but very few are this well acted.
If You Like "The Usual Suspects", Check This Out.......2006-11-01
This is an excellent film. There are great plot twists and Cuba Gooding, Jr. plays his part well. Be careful in reading some of the reviews below, because there seems to be some unintentional information revealed that might make the movie less enjoyable. Gooding's character is an everyman type character -- not perfect, but a good man. He gets disbarred for doing what he believes is right. Then, later in the movie he gets in trouble when he does something he knows to be unethical. The character is sympathetic because extraordinary circumstances (believable due to a well-written plot) force him to make some tough decisions. Maybe we would have reacted differently, but we understand his reasoning. So, when he finds himself accused of a murder he did not commit, we root for him to come out on top. Can he discover the murderer before the police catch him? Gooding is great, but this twisting, thought-provoking plot is an absolute star! A vastly underated movie. I highly recommend it!
Good Thriller.......2006-02-14
What if someone just dropped a brilliant book draft in your lap and then died? You might publish it as your own work. That is what happens to lawyer Lawson Russell (Cuba Gooding, Jr.). Lawson becomes famous, until he learns that the events in the book - where five lawyers are murdered - actually occurred and he is being charged with the crimes. Lawson must outrun police and try to unravel the mystery to save his own life.
Cuba was a good actor, as was Tom Berenger as a police detective chasing Lawson. I love Tom Berenger, and feel he should be cast in more films.
The only thing I didn't like about this film with an incredibly original plot and well-written screenplay, was the gratuituous sex and swearing. Because of this, I can't watch this film with my mom or siblings. Do we really need to see a nymphomaniac book publisher with a ring in her nipple?
Amazon wouldn't let me give it no stars.......2006-02-07
Whatever potential this film had went out the window when it flunked the smell test for realism.
Generally, I'm a fan of colorblind casting, but this story was not written for a Black actor.
A fugitive Black man in a small, predominantly white town is able to move around undetected? During the day?
After that, I couldn't take anything in this movie seriously.
I tried to suspend belief and go with it. Couldn't do it.

Because of his tragic death on the set of The Crow, we'll never know if Brandon Lee would have turned one successful film into a popular series. But one look at this tepid sequel suggests that not even the charismatic Lee could have rescued The Crow movies from the burden of a lackluster screenplay. Based on the popular comic books by James O'Barr, this sequel finds Vincent Pérez as a man named Ashe, who is murdered along with his young son by a gang of drug-running thugs under the employ of slimy kingpin Judah Earl (Richard Brooks). Ashe is resurrected with the help of a tattoo artist named Sarah (Mia Kirschner), whereupon he begins a campaign of revenge against his killers. More a rehash than a sequel, the film repeats the grungy, dark look of urban decay from The Crow, but its combination of violence, heavy-handed symbolism, and tacky sentiment make this a film strictly for nihilistic teens. Then again, no movie in which veteran punkster Iggy Pop plays a sleazeball can be considered a total loss. --Jeff Shannon
Description

Customer Reviews:
"Does The Corpse Have A Familiar Face?".......2007-08-06
More of a remake than a sequel, "The Crow: City Of Angels" attempts to capitalize on the cult phenomenon of it's predecessor by basically repeating and rehashing it's basic premise without actually adding anything new or of merit. This time around, instead of Detroit, it's a decaying Los Angeles -- populated by set-pieces that look like they could be destroyed by a stiff breeze -- and Vincent Perez is summoned from the dead to avenge the death of his son and himself at the hands of a gang, with the help of Sarah (Mia Kirshner), who may or may not be the same Sarah from the first movie. Music video director Tim Pope, who hasn't done anything worthwhile since, gives this film a definite mid-90's look. Truth be told, not only does the movie look low-budget and meant for direct-to-video release, but also looks like something you would catch on HBO at three in the morning during a weekday. As hard as the script tries -- which, come to think of it, it doesn't -- it just can't match the potency of the original. Instead of getting to know our main characters and building the required backstory with the tragic elements needed, the exposition is handled in such a careless way. It seems like they wanted to get the story out of the way so they could get straight to the violence. A father avenging the murder of his own child? Should have had a little more emotional impact than what was actually presented in the movie. The actors all pretty much ham it up, although punk icon Iggy Pop manages to keep the audience from falling asleep, while his co-star, Thuy "Yellow Ranger" Trang, is at the very least, an interesting presence in a movie such as this. On all accounts, "The Crow: City Of Angels" is and was a complete and utter failure, dooming the rest of the franchise into direct-to-video Hell. Ironic, since the movies that came after it were actually, gulp, better.
Falls Short of the Original Crow.......2007-03-09
If this movie had been the first in the Crow series, then its likely that more movie fans would have liked it. However, there was a first Crow movie starring the late Brandon Lee and its to that first movie that this Crow and the other Crow sequels are compared to. On those grounds, this Crow merits no more than a 4 out of 5 rating.
Let's face it, Vincent Perez is not a good substitute for Brandon Lee. The first 15 minutes of this movie were incomprehensible and had little to do with the rest of the movie.
However, there are some redeeming factors to this movie namely the music and the cinematography. Add in a script that has a strong second half, and you have a movie that is worth a rental at least.
Good, not great........2006-11-26
Seeing The Crow flash across the screen again was something I wasn't sure I'd be able to experience again after the tragic misfortunes of the first Crow movie. I've heard it said that one of the crew members on the first movie actually thought it was cursed.
But this second movie, which is based around a new Crow (Vincent Perez) and the returning Sarah from the first movie (played in this one by the beautiful and dark Mia Kirshner) wasn't cursed like the first one, the curse this had was that it was a sequel to something that likely didn't need one. Although I enjoyed the dark circumstances that surrounded the actual onscreen play, with the nod to "La Dia De los Muertos" (The Day Of The Dead) being my favorite, the story about a murdered father who returns to avenge his son, to me, takes away from the romantic overtones of the first movie and the Crow comic book overall.
The original story was written by James O'Barr to help him exorcize the demons he lived with after losing his first love early in life and he's made mention that in truth, the Crows story was told then, and in his eyes had been told completely. But as with all things we find interesting or fall in love with, it was decided that there needed to be more, so they made more.
I kind of doubt Brandon Lee would have come back for the sequel if he'd lived as I'm sure he would have felt, as O'Barr did, that Eric Dravens story had been told. I make a few leaps here, making mention of things James has said to me and maybe a little of what I hope Brandon Lee would have done had he survived the accident that took his life, but I make them with the best intentions.
I enjoyed the movie, being a comic book geek, I was sure I would. I have to admit to having felt a little betrayed when the sequel came out, just as I was when the ensuing comic follow-ups came out, but the Crow has become an avenger of wrongs that couldn't be put right any other way, a dark hero to the masses who suffer and have no way to let that out other than to dream of a hero who would go beyond death to right their wrongs and although Eric and Shelleys story was told to completion, there are more stories to tell. This is one of them. There are others, there will be others, likely as many as there are people with stories of their own, because truly, who among us doesn't feel the need at some point in our lives to be avenged?
See the movie, be forewarned that it contains violence in the extreme, some nudity and a lot of what might be termed "the darker aspects of life", drugs, gangs, betrayels, S&M and torture. Iggy Pop, though not great either, was a welcome touch of dark realism to the play on the screen. If you go in with no expectations based on the first movie or the comic book, this 3 stars quickly becomes 3 1/2 or 4.
Come on people really...It's a crow story........2006-10-25
The terrible mistake most viewers make when watching a Crow movie or a reading another Crow Novel or Comic is that they compare the "Crow" in question to the previous Crow or Crows. You have to understand that this character isn't "Eric" (Crow from the first film), This isn't Motor City Detroit, This is The City Of Angels and the main characters name is Ashe this is his life, his perspective. Its not supposed to be like the first Crow they are two different people and two different stories, thats all they are just stories, they are not sequels or prequels just installments. If you could see everyones life before your eyes would they look the same? No they wouldn't. Why? Because were all different. All the folks who gave this movie bad reviews did so because they are standing to close to a big picture, step back and see the big picture. The world and the ways of the Crow aren't so narrow that they would stay limited to the confines and brooding post-gothic nature of the first film.
Most of the people giving reviews probably don't even know that James O' Barr wrote the first Crow after losing the love of his life to a drunk driver, so all that pain, frustration, and hatred went into those pages and script. You can't create pain like that you have to know it. This is why the first Crow has an unfair advantage against all the new Crow movies, you can't turn water into wine, these directors had to work it in the best way they could.
By giving such harsh critique to these movies you may alter someones judgement and cause them to miss out on a really good film. Crow:City Of Angels was a good movie and a good Crow story. I myself loved the first film the most, I even remember the trailers that played "Big Empty" By Stone Temple Pilots which I still listen to today. But please don't drag this second installments name through the mud.
-Jon
Spectacular? Riiiiiight...........2006-10-22
I was fortunate not to spend any money specifically on this movie. I couldn't get past the first 15 minutes... incoherent beginning, and overly stylized particularly where Ashe becomes "the avenger" (for lack of a better name). Nothing like the original at all, which I love by comparison.

Unfortunately, the digital video disc includes no extras about the production. --Jim Emerson

Kill the crow and destroy the man........2005-10-10
This is a Halloween story. It was just a year ago on all hollows eve that an unscrupulous group of routies did untold things to a nice coupe, resulting in the couple's death. Well the young man Eric (Brandon Lee) is back and invincible. It is time to give the routies the death wish treatment. One by one they get uniquely dispatched and in the process a mother and daughter are re-united. The local policeman (Ernie Hudson) sees dead people.
Will Eric balance the books or does he find out that you can't when all the time?
