Shaking Camera.......2007-09-16
Except for the terrible shaking camera, this was a good movie with lots of action and a good story line. I had to look away on some scenes to keep from getting sick due to all the camera motion.
Thoughtful, Well Crafted Thriller.......2007-09-14
I've seen the third Bourne movie three times now and I'm very much looking forward to it's video release so I can add it to the first two movies. Both of which are so well crafted - though by two different directors - that (with the additional of the third) they will make one of the most enduring movie trilogies (or series if we're so lucky as to get a fourth movie) ever created.
Matt Damon throughly inhabits the character. The casting is perfect down through the extra's. The director(s) use the locations to great advantage. The cutting moves the action along at a blistering pace, yet in repeat viewings there are plenty of delightful discoveries to make that reflect the care put into the production.
My only quibble is the excessive reliance on "shaky cam" (combat video) film-technique. Thankfully the effects of which are minimized on the small screen. While I think it adds excitement and energy, the flurry of camera movements distracts from the choreography of the martial arts in the second and third movies. Yes, it's a minor disappointment, but the fight scenes are very well-thought out and as carefully crafted as everything else in the production.
On days when my own life seems incoherent, I can always put one of the Bourne movies in the DVD and spend a couple of hours with someone who always knows what he should do next and has the resources to pull it off.
Not a fan of the Shaky cam.......2007-09-09
But over all a great movie. I love the Fights But in this movie the camera shakes so much that its hard to see them.

If you like action then this is a great movie. You should watch the Bourne Idenity first for context.
'the moment you entered her life she was dead'.......2007-08-28
Certainly different from its predecessor, Supremacy puts its emphasis on political intrigue and espionage rather than personal matters... most of the time. The agency here is not entirely bad anymore.
Treadstone is dismantled but its shadows still hanging heavily.
This installment is not as even as the first one. There are a couple of really emotional scenes, showing loss, anger, and redemption and they rival anything from the first movie. Then there are suspiciously long stretches devoid of emotion. The action too gets a tad lower mark. The beginnings of mad cameraman are already evident, fast cuts, crazy angles, dark and noisy action... the style, which was further `perfected' in the third film.
JB has no clear-cut friends here, acting alone, and more methodically than ever. The tale here is a bit grimmer, too.
The score now has a central theme. Firstly introduced in Goa scenes, its slower version comes back from time to time. I liked it.

Freely adapted from Robert Ludlum's 1980 bestseller, The Bourne Identity starts fast and never slows down. The twisting plot revs up in Zurich, where amnesiac CIA assassin Jason Bourne (Matt Damon), with no memory of his name, profession, or recent activities, recruits a penniless German traveler (Run Lola Run's Franka Potente) to assist in solving the puzzle of his missing identity. While his CIA superior (Chris Cooper) dispatches assassins to kill Bourne and thus cover up his failed mission, Bourne exercises his lethal training to leave a trail of bodies from Switzerland to Paris. Director Doug Liman (Go) infuses Ludlum's intricate plotting with a maverick's eye for character detail, matching breathtaking action with the humorous, thrill-seeking chemistry of Damon and Potente. Previously made as a 1988 TV movie starring Richard Chamberlain, The Bourne Identity benefits from the sharp talent of rising stars, offering intelligent, crowd-pleasing excitement from start to finish. --Jeff Shannon

Bourne again?.......2007-09-11
He comes to on a fishing boat with bullets in his back and no idea how he got there, who shot him, or why. Oh, and he's got a bank account number on his body.
When he goes to the bank, the safe deposit box is full of money and at least half a dozen passports with different identities. So, which one is his? In some ways, he has a chance to start a new life--but the old one really isn't leaving him behind.
People are chasing him--with guns. More important than that, how does he know just how to evade them?
"Bourne" is a riveting story about a man who's in a terrible position and unable to really know who is friend or foe. This film has one of the best car chase scenes I have ever encountered--with a Mini Cooper, no less! The book was good, the film almost better.
The Good & Bad Of ''The Bourne Identity'.......2007-09-09
This is a solid suspense-spy film with an agent-on-the-run scenario. People who like a paranoid theme, where everyone is after you (I plead guilty) will love this.
The amount of violence in here was just about right, not too much and not too little. I also enjoyed the Paris scenery, both the street-level shots and the aerial photography. Ovrall, the cinematography is very good in this film. It's an involving story that once you're hooked, you stay that way. The two hours go by pretty quickly.
On the negative side, I get tired of American filmmakers trashing their own government all the time, in here its them trying to kill one of their own agents. I hear the third movie is really bad in that regard. I'm sorry to hear that as I liked the sequel ("The Bourne Supremacy") even better, although part of the reason was that I was now familiar with the main characters after watching this film. Anyway, I highly recommend the first two Bourne movies for fans of suspense, crime, intrigue, good locales, etc.
The Bourne Identity.......2007-09-08
Although I am not that much in action movies, I really enjoyed this one, maybe because of Matt Damon who is such a good actor. Also this was the first one so the story hadn't been worn out yet. I just saw #2 and #3 and it really repeats. It reminds me of the TV program "The Fugitive". But all in all, I give it thumbs up.
Bourne is better than Bond.......2007-09-08
The All American spy -- Jason Bourne stands toe to toe with the best of Britain! this is a great series!
great movie!.......2007-09-03
It is a very good dvd set! Love the quality of the picture and the sound! And of course Matt Damon is always so nice to look at. haha...

mat is air-bourne.......2007-09-16
The Bourne Identity is one of the best spy characters ever. Bourne isnt dramtic but silent and to the point. Like a professional assasin would be portrayed in the movies, and it works. Haunted by the past with amnesia he struggles around the world fleeing an unknown and deadly enemy. The action a la car chases, and well choreagraphed fight scenes supplement the plot about a monkey ranch in the well laid plans of an illegal cia dept. that employs death to protect national security, a dept. which Bourne was a part of, now a liability. Can stand alone without the sequels.
Great movie.......2007-09-02
This movie was already great but in HD DVD it looks 10 times better i recommend people to buy it
Great movie even greater on HD-DVD.......2007-08-26
I am a big fan of the Bourne movies. Seeing them in HD makes them even more enjoyable to watch. If you are Bourne fan you really need to check these movies out on HD-DVD. Can't wait for Ultimatum to come on HD-DVD.
Great PQ, and great movie....recommended.......2007-08-01
If you love the Bourne series you definitely need to pick this up in HD. PQ is great, and if you dont have Bourne Supremacy either you might as well get that too since they are both great movies.
With Bourne Ultimatum coming out in a few days it helped refresh my mind....

Is a mystery really mysterious when the end isn't a secret? Is espionage still thrilling when you know beforehand that the cloak has been pulled back and the dagger revealed? If it's a film as good as Breach, the answer is a resounding yes. Here is a true story that's genuinely stranger than fiction: FBI agent Robert Hanssen spent over 20 years selling government secrets to the Russians, making him the most egregious traitor in U.S. history. He was an Opus Dei Catholic and a devout churchgoer who was also a sexual deviant, a straitlaced company man so trusted by his employers that they once appointed him to lead an investigation designed to reveal who the spy was--when in fact it was Hanssen himself. And in the end, he was brought down in part by 26-year-old Eric O'Neill, an agent-in-training who worked with him for just two months. Chris Cooper, a 2003 supporting actor Oscar winner for Adaptation, is brilliant in the lead role, playing Hanssen as a dour, cold, ultraconservative cipher (women in pantsuits are just one of his peeves) whose conversations more closely resemble interrogations. Ryan Phillippe is also excellent as O'Neill, who's initially kept in the dark by the superior (Laura Linney) who assigned him to help expose Hanssen's treachery; thinking he's been brought in only to gather evidence about his boss' sexual transgressions, O'Neill finds himself caught in a profound moral conundrum, grudgingly admiring Hanssen even as his own marriage is severely tested by the older man's creepy and hypocritical intrusion into their lives, not to mention the FBI's strict rules against discussing the case.
Director Billy Ray (whose previous feature was also a true story: Shattered Glass, about the young writer who fabricated stories for The New Republic) and co-screenwriters Adam Mazer and William Rotko do an extraordinary job of maintaining the tension as the story leads to the conclusion that's been revealed in the first few frames (i.e., Hanssen's arrest in February 2001); the exquisite torture of O'Neill's having to keep Hanssen distracted while Bureau technicians search the latter's car is but one example. Moreover, notwithstanding the plot developments, the filmmakers manage to keep their focus on the personal interactions that are the film's key element: the relationships that O'Neill maintains with Hanssen, his father (a cameo by Bruce Davison), his wife (Caroline Dhavernas), and others are entirely credible. At once fascinating and horrifying, Breach is inarguably one of the best films of 2007. --Sam Graham
Customer Reviews:
This movie surprised me!!!.......2007-09-17
I didn't know quite what to expect when I bought this movie.
I knew the cast was good and that encouraged me to buy it. Chris
Cooper is superb and so believable. Not alot of fast action, just
good honest story telling.
It does show how vunerable we are as a nation.
First-rate Thriller.......2007-09-15
Robert Hanssen is widely considered to be the worst traitor in the history of the American intelligence services. While a special agent in the intelligence division of the FBI, Hanssen sold out his country and caused the death of key American agents in the Soviet Union. This movie attempts to answer the question of why he did it, while thrilling us with the story of how he was caught.
Hanssen is a complicated man: a religious, "Opus Dei" Catholic and a pornographer who sends abroad movies of his sexual relations with his wife; a right-wing conservative who spies for the Soviets; a loving grandfather who overreacts to minor slights; a paranoid who wound up trusting the one man sent to make the case against him. Although "Breach" does not really explain Hanssen's motivation, it appears that Hanssen had no small measure of resentment against the FBI for failing to recognize his talents and promote him to the position he believed he deserved. Chris Cooper captures Hanssen in a five-star performance that should win an Academy Award.
Laura Linney is also outstanding as the Special Agent in charge of the investigation of Hanssen. The nerve-wracking investigation, full of twists, turns and near-misses, demands total commitment. For once, we get to see a realistic career woman, totally dedicated to her demanding job, and not messing up or falling in love with any of the other characters in the movie.
If you are trying to choose between "Breach" and "The Good Shepherd" (a fictionalized story of the founding of the CIA), choose "Breach." While "Breach" is really more of a detective story than an espionage drama (because we know early on that Hanssen is a spy), the plot is thrilling and believable. Best of all, "Breach" is an outstanding portrait of a complicated man.
DVD-like quality?.......2007-09-09
Apart from the fact that I cannot use this service as as German customer here, I would never use it as it simply doesn't hold up to its promise.
The average bitrate for any contemporary movie on DVD is anywhere between 4000 to 7000 kbps. In short, this title is not DVD-like quality, it is slighty better than the quality offered by video-CDs.
Can't download it either.......2007-09-09
It doesn't download soooooo I wouldn't know if it's good either....maybe I shoulda read everyone else's comments before renting it so I didn't waste 4 bucks......looks good but who knows....Amazon doesn't write me back but as soon as it plays I will GLADLY remove this comment but they don't like to contact people back
Very Good.......2007-09-07
Very well done. Even more so as it is a TRUE STORY! Acting was brilliant.

A complicated movie about the Central Intelligence Agency and its agents, The Good Shepherd isn't your typical spy movie. Though it stars Matt Damon (The Bourne Identity films) and Angelina Jolie (Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Lara Croft franchise)--actors with considerable experience in the action-espionage genre--The Good Shepherd requires that they play more subdued and (much less interesting) characters here. The movie focuses on the career or Edward Wilson (Damon), a privileged Yale graduate who goes on to help found the CIA. He is a quiet, serious, and guarded man, even in the most intimate moments with his civilian wife (Jolie, in a role that wastes her talent). Set against a backdrop of real-life events such as the Bay of Pigs, The Good Shepherd is meticulous in creating a realistic timeframe. The film gets a jolt of excitement when Robert DeNiro (in his first directing role since 1993's A Bronx Tale) peppers the screen with appearances by Joe Pesci, Alec Baldwin, and William Hurt. But those moments are too infrequent. At 157 minutes long, the film is crammed with many factual details, but the characters are shortchanged when it comes to development. Viewers have to wonder why anyone, much less someone like Wilson who has everything going for him, would devote his life to a thankless job that brings so little happiness to himself and his family. The Good Shepherd is an ambitious but flawed film. The actors do a formidable job with a well-intentioned but meandering script. However, we meet so many characters and learn so little about each that it's difficult to drum up much empathy for any of them. --Jae-Ha Kim
Description
Matt Damon, Angelina Jolie and Robert De Niro star in this powerful thriller about the birth of the CIA. Edward Wilson (Damon) believes in America, and will sacrifice everything he loves to protect it. But as one of the covert founders of the CIA, Edward's youthful idealism is slowly eroded by his growing suspicion of the people around him. Everybody has secrets
but will Edward's destroy him? With an all-star cast including Alec Baldwin, Billy Crudup, William Hurt, Timothy Hutton and John Turturro, it's the gripping story David Ansen of Newsweek hails as "spellbinding."
Customer Reviews:
Fun Spy Flick.......2007-09-17
I saw this movie in the theaters when it was out and really enjoyed it. I always like Matt Damon in this type of role and all though Angelina Jolie's was a small role she did it beautifully. Matt Damon always seems to get himself stuck in some kind of conspiracy and has to fight his way out. It is the type of role besides Ocean's Eleven Comedies that he has been born for. I would recommend renting this flick.
alternative .......2007-09-10
try "The Company", from TNT. More accurate portrayal of what really happened in the CIA's early days.
I wish I could travel back in time so I could stop myself from watching this movie and go get a cow branding on my a*s instead.
Know In Advance This Is Not An Action Film.......2007-09-07
I had a huge advantage before watching this on DVD. I was told by a good friend that it was extremely slow, and be prepared to be bored out of "my mind." Well, I wasn't bored, maybe because I now expected a slower, non-action-packed CIA-type film....and I wasn't disappointed. Actually, I liked it, mainly because of the cinematography. This is stunning in its photography. Kudos to Director Robert De Niro and Director of Photography Robert Richardson for their work in here.
I also appreciated the low profanity in here. After watching "The Departed," this far-cleaner film was a treat for the ears, too. Yes, there are a handful of 'f-words," but not much else including no blasphemy.
The story winds up presenting an interesting question which is posed to Matt Damon's character, "Edward Wilson." He plays an extremely loyal CIA man, a guy who is straight-arrow and one whose priority is country-first. The dilemma occurs at the end when he must choose between what's best for his son or his country.
It's a thought-out, interesting story that takes a few sides to the left of center more than the right, but is not really a movie with any heavy-handed political agenda, mainly pointing out what it takes to be a successful "spy" and that this unemotional detachment can be rough on some people and their families.
This movie, I suspect, will either put you to sleep or fascinate you.
A Parable for our times.......2007-09-04
I saw more in this movie than a story about the CIA. I saw an exaggerated tale of what many men close to power, whether in the business or political worlds, go through to achieve their business ends. Yes, family and a semblance of humanity are not always sacrificed, but there are those -- call them workaholics, drudges, whatever -- to whom work and order are more important than family and friends. These men enter a cerebral world where they have to live by something not taught at Yale -- their wits -- to survive.
These men (and some women) are all around us. There are decisions made thousands of times a day to put business or political objectives before family and friends, though not always with the dramatic alienation that this movie depicts. But every such decision, compounds over time to produce alienation from loved ones. This movie offers a tale of how a bright and apparently sensitive young man can be molded into a husk of himself by devotion to "pleasing his superiors" and success at all costs, rooted in a 'love of country'.
Matt Damon gives a particularly fine performance.
On a lesser scale of importance, the movie provides a much-needed public airing of the connections between the Bonesmen and the CIA.
Sleep-Inducing.......2007-08-31
I have three things to say about this film:
1. The pace was so incredibly slow that the film was rendered unenjoyable. I get that it was intended to be serious, but it was serious to the point of stagnation. It was serious like a graduate school lecture is serious, but not particularly enjoyable.
2. The lighting was too dark. Again, I get that it is supposed to be a film with a dark, grave subject matter, but I would also imagine that the audience is supposed to be able to actually see the film. I found myself squinting and wishing that someone would turn on the lights.
3. The characters left me cold. I was unable to care about any of them, even Angelina Jolie, and I usually like Angelina Jolie. I just found myself wishing that the film would end. It had a high "so what" factor. This was compounded by the long length and overly complicated plot.
I really liked Robert De Niro's previous directorial effort, "A Bronx Tale." Delightful film. What happened?

Before Harrison Ford assumed the mantle of playing Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan hero in Patriot Games, Alec Baldwin took a swing at the character in this John McTiernan film and hit one to the fence. If less instantly sympathetic than Ford, Baldwin is in some respects more interesting and nuanced as Ryan, and drawing comparisons between both actors' performances can make for some interesting postmovie discussion. That aside, The Hunt for Red October stands alone as a uniquely exciting adventure with a fantastic costar: Sean Connery as a Russian nuclear submarine captain attempting to defect to the West on his ship. Ryan must figure out his true motives for approaching the U.S. McTiernan (Predator, Die Hard) made an exceptionally handsome movie here with action sequences that really do take one's breath away. --Tom Keogh
Description
Based on Tom Clancy's bestseller, directed by John McTiernan (Die Hard) and starring Sean Connery and Alec Baldwin, THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER sweats with high-tech anxiety and the tension of men who hold Doomsday in their hands. A new technologically-superior Soviet nuclear sub, the Red October, is heading for the U.S. coast under the command of Captain Marko Ramius (Connery). The American government thinks Ramius is planning to attack. A lone CIA analyst (Baldwin) has a different idea: he thinks Ramius is planning to defect, but he has only a few hours to find him and prove it - because the entire Russian naval and air commands are trying to find him, too. The hunt is on!

Hunt for Red October, Outstanding.......2007-09-09
This copy replaces a destroyed VHS copy. Giant of a movie. Watched it many times, but when played it is always the first time. A good nail biter.

Great movie, Sean Connery played his role outstandingly. The Hunt for Red October (Special Collector's Edition)
Like, so 80's.......2007-06-24
This is a really good yarn, but the film adaptation is marginal - Connery and Baldwin are real, compelling, and entertaining, but the other actors leave much to be desired. Some really good shots of underwater scenes, and a good suspense level, but the acting could add a lot to this film.
The hunt for Red October.......2007-05-27
Connery at his best. A fantastic film. Definitely an owner movie.
Excellent Movie.......2007-05-02
I can't stand Alec Baldwin, but he did well in his first major motion picture. Sean Connery was good as he always is. I liked everything about it. The music is good. The special effects don't match these days, but I can live with it. A very dramatic, well acted movie I think.

Hit man Martin Q. Blank (John Cusack) is in an awkward situation. Several of them, actually. He's attending his high school reunion on an assignment; he's got a rival hit man (Dan Aykroyd) on his tail; and he's going to have to explain to his old girlfriend (Minnie Driver) why he stood her up on prom night. This amiable black comedy, cowritten by Cusack and directed by Jonathan Demme protégé George Armitage (Miami Blues), has the feel of Demme's Something Wild and Married to the Mob--which is to say its humor is dark and brightly colored at the same time. Cusack and Driver are utterly charming--as is the leading man's sister, Joan, who plays his secretary. (Ms. Cusack received an Oscar nomination for her next role, in In & Out.) Alan Arkin is also very funny as Martin's psychiatrist. --Jim Emerson
Description
Here's the killer comedy hit that's loaded with outrageous fun! For Martin Blank (John Cusack -- HIGH FIDELITY, SERENDIPITY), a hit man stuck in a career rut, attending his 10-year high school reunion is about the last thing he's in the mood for! But when the prospects of rekindling an old flame (Minnie Driver -- GOOD WILL HUNTING) and pulling off one final job convince him to go, things are looking up ... that is, until Martin's arch rival (Dan Aykroyd) shows up aiming to blow the competition away! For hilarious comedy entertainment that's packed with action, GROSSE POINTE BLANK is a surefire knockout!
Customer Reviews:
Hitmen With A Soft side.......2007-07-23
Another great movie with John Cusack in it. It's a romantic comedy of a guy who is a hitman, and ends up back in the town he went to highschool. There he finds his ex-girlfriend played by Minnie Driver. There is also the highschool reunion on and he has to find time to see his ex as well as do a hit. Great comedy and great music, this should be in any dvd collection. Witty dialouge with a small giggle here and there. Something to watch when there is nothing on Tv.
Grosse Pointe Blank..........2007-02-04
Mr. Cusack takes us for a wild ride in Grosse Pointe, Michigan. The man is simply trying to attend his High School reunion. But, he has a few issues to deal with while he's there...I'll let you find out for yourself! Get it at a good price - then enjoy it! Three stars!!
Were you in high school in the 80s? .......2007-01-12
Hysterically funny perspective on transitioning from high school to adulthood. John Cusack delivers a terrific performance as does Minnie Driver and Joan Cusack.
Grosse Pointe Blank.......2006-11-06
Sharp wit combined with excellent delivery make Grosse Pointe one of my favorite movies. It's always interesting when the protagonist is such an aweful person, yet seems like a hero. I'd recommend this movie to anyone who likes dry humor and has a tolerance for the depths of human monstrosity.
Grosse Pointe Blank.......2006-11-04
Gotta be the funniest, wittiest, fastest comedy out there. I can't stand not to watch this one. I probably see it twice a year. It's that good. Every line is good, every scene is good. Never predictable, never dull or formulaic, despite being an outgrowth of Cusack's prestigious 1980's lexicon of light comedies.

Product Description
Hard-drinking, burnt-out ex-CIA operative John Creasy (Washington) has given up on life--until his friend Rayburn (Oscar winner Christopher Walken) gets him a job as a bodyguard to nine-year-old Pita Ramos (Dakota Fanning). Bit by bit, Creasy begins to reclaim his soul, but when Pita is kidnapped, Creasy unleashes a firestorm of apocalyptic vengeance against everyone responsible.

Style trumps substance in Man on Fire, a slick, brooding reunion of Crimson Tide star Denzel Washington and director Tony Scott. The ominous, crime-ridden setting is Mexico City, where a dour, alcoholic warrior with a mysterious Black Ops past (Washington) seeks redemption as the devoted bodyguard of a lovable 9-year-old girl (the precociously gifted Dakota Fanning), then responds with predictable fury when she is kidnapped. Prolific screenwriter Brian Helgeland (Mystic River, L.A. Confidential) sets a solid emotional foundation for Washington's tormented character, and Scott's stylistic excess compensates for a distended plot that's both repellently violent and viscerally absorbing. Among Scott's more distracting techniques is the use of free-roaming, comic-bookish subtitles... even when they're unnecessary! Adapted from a novel by A.J. Quinnell and previously filmed as a 1987 vehicle for Scott Glenn, Man on Fire is roughly on par with Scott's similar 1990 film Revenge, efficiently satisfying Washington's incendiary bloodlust under a heavy blanket of humid, doom-laden atmosphere. --Jeff Shannon

This was a totally believable movie. Denzel Washington's character delivers violence of action while drinking himself to death.

Man On Fire.......2007-08-06
The butchered version you'll see on TV (even cable channels) leaves out information essential to the story. This is the only version to have.
"Im a professional," thats what everyone keeps telling me, .......2007-07-14
Man on Fire is one of Denzels greatest performances. He plays a character John Creasy with not much to live for until he gains a bodyguard job for a young girl who eventually is kidnapped. Once kidnapped you get to see John on a war path to take down anyone involved with the tragic event. The story is excellent and is complimented by a great cast of actors.
This definately recieves my seal of approval for a solid viewing experience.
Not great, but not bad.......2007-06-20
To my surprise, Tony Scott's remake of Man On Fire isn't the war crime I was expecting by a long shot. Horribly over-directed in places, true, but nowhere near as irritating as Domino, which is the closest ADDS filmmaking has come to projectile vomiting at the audience to date. It helps that Scott has a decent script and a good cast to keep his worst excesses in check, and it has to be said that some of the stylistic touches (such as the very active subtitling) are really pretty good. He's better at framing the surrounding scenes than some of the big moments, which are fairly tension and adrenaline-free for all their imagination, but he's prepared to get his hands far dirtier than you'd expect from a mainstream studio picture, and he even manages a couple of moments of emotional resonance as well. It's certainly much better than the dire original, which only had a good John Scott score (part of which turned up in Die Hard) going for it (aside from the film's change of location from Italy to Mexico, the song has changed from Someone to Watch Over Me - well, Ridley beat him to that one - to Linda Ronstadt's infinitely less relevant cover of Blue Bayou). Good to see Christopher Walken in a good guy role again, too.
Top notch film starring Denzel Washington.......2007-06-19
Man on Fire is one of the best crime drama films I have had the pleasure of viewing. Set in the heart of Mexico, the film tells a fantastic story that is backed up by great direction and cinematic appeal. With that said, you throw in top notch actors like Denzel Washington and Christopher Walken and it does more than make the grade.
Man on Fire centers on John Creasy, a burned out loner type whose only resolve in the present day is a bottle of liquor. Creasy meets up with an old friend (played by Walken) who turns him towards work as a bodyguard for a family's daughter in Mexico, a place where multiple ransom based kidnappings occur on a regular basis. Given his extensive background of military accomplishments which includes counter terrorism and Special Forces (to name a few) he is hired almost immediately, although he himself is reluctant about the new role.
The character development of Creasy is excellent, but I would have to attribute that as much to the screen presence of Denzel as I would anything else. Overall the direction of this movie is superb, using captions when necessary and applying some different camera uses in regards to angles and perception to allow different moods to be invoked for a specific scene. Dakota Fanning plays as the daughter that he is supposed to protect, and I feel was a good choice for the role. As the movie moves on, we learn little about Creasy's past but get to explore him tearing down some walls in the present, as both a "vigilante with a vengeance" persona as well as seeing the human compassion side of him in his adoration of the little girl he is paid to protect. The film has it all when it comes to twists and turns as well as themes of corruption, family, and revenge. As Creasy says it best in the movie; "revenge is a dish best served cold". The films emotional conclusion is still a stoic ending when you take into account all the harrowing events and actions that led up to it. I feel what makes this film so much better than many of its kind is the ability to evoke a great seriousness within the main character while putting him in a dire situation throughout much of the film.
Bonus Disc: If you were a fan of this film when it first came out then you may enjoy this particular "Collector's edition Steelbook" package, which features a bonus disk chocked with extra's including multiple trailers, behind the scenes footage and an interesting documentary that talks about the ransom based kidnappings that take place in places like Mexico on a regular basis. Also discussed somewhat is the history of this story which originally came from a novel and had an initial film made about it starring Scott Glenn several years ago.
