Save the Last Dance enjoyed a profitable release in early 2001, with box-office earnings that exceeded anyone's expectations. Its performance illustrates the staying power of a formulaic movie that avoids the pitfalls and clichés that would otherwise render it forgettable. Since there's nothing new here, you'll appreciate the original quirks in a character-based plot that's just around the corner from Flashdance, and just as familiar. Sara (Julia Stiles) gave up a promising ballet career when her mother was killed while rushing to attend her daughter's crucial audition to Juilliard; Sara blames herself for the accident, and at her new, mostly African American high school in Chicago, she's uncertain of her future.Derek (Sean Patrick Thomas) has no such doubts; his own future is bright, and his attraction to Sara is immediate; they connect (predictably), and Sara's dormant funk emerges, with Derek's coaching, as she learns hip-hop dancing in a local club. Obligatory subplots are equally routine: Derek's sister (Kerry Washington) is a single mom struggling with her child's absentee father; Derek's best friend (Fredro Starr) feels trapped in his gangsta lifestyle; and Sara's once-estranged father (Terry Kinney) is doing his best to correct past mistakes. Within the confines of this standard follow-your-dream drama, director Thomas Carter capitalizes on a script that allows these characters to be real, intelligent, and thoughtful about their lives and their futures. It's obvious that Stiles's dancing was intercut with that of a professional double, but that illusion hardly matters when the rest of the movie's so earnestly positive and genuine. --Jeff Shannon

Jack Slater is an action-film hero played by Arnold Schwarzenegger. An old projectionist (Robert Prosky) hands a magic movie ticket to Jack's biggest preteen fan (Austin O'Brien), and the kid steps right inside the latest Jack Slater film, becoming the actor star's sidekick in gunfights and car chases. But when Jack's nemesis (Charles Dance) gets his hands on the ticket, the fight busts out into the real world and Jack (à la Toy Story's Buzz Lightyear) refuses to believe he's a fictional character. Director John McTiernan churns some nifty scenes out of this setup, although the fiction-to-reality shuffle is not as deft as in, say, Woody Allen's The Purple Rose of Cairo, and the plot needs the kind of logic and discipline found in that classic when-worlds-collide film Back to the Future. Still, Schwarzenegger has moments of wit and smashing action, and we get a faux-movie trailer advertising an intriguing new shoot-'em-up: "Something's rotten in the State of Denmark--and Hamlet is taking out the trash!"Customer Reviews:

Selena Live - The Last Concert
Starring: Selena , and Jennifer Lopez Manufacturer: Image Entertainment ProductGroup: DVD Binding: DVD Similar Items: ASIN: B0000AINIZ Release Date: 2003-09-02 |

Is it real, or is it J-Lo? Both, as it turns out. There are 55 minutes of the actual Selena here, filmed live at Houston's Astrodome in 1995. The 23-year-old Tejano singer performs her light, catchy tunes all in Spanish, save for a '70s disco medley (which includes, poignantly, "I Will Survive"); polished and charismatic, if not extraordinarily talented, Selena was clearly on the way up before her death at 23 at the hands of an employee. That she was later portrayed onscreen by Jennifer Lopez, who has eclipsed Selena's stardom by far, no doubt partly explains the inclusion on the DVD of a 45-minute documentary (truthfully, more like a lengthy puff piece for Entertainment Tonight) about the Selena biopic. If you want to know how the filmmakers made those tough decisions about hair, clothes, and lip-syncing, you will not be disappointed. But the real thing's better. --Sam GrahamCustomer Reviews:

The final episodes of the broadcast series Ah My Goddess (2005) introduce additional elements from Norse legends, including the Fenris Wolf and the Midgard Serpent. With some help from Skuld, Belldandy unleashes her full powers to save Urd and Keiichi from the Lord of Terror, who is also an embodiment of the Ultimate Destruction Program. Virtue and the love between Belldandy and Keiichi triumph over evil, as Terror suffers the humiliating fate of being degaussed. The story really ends with episode 24: A romance between a child version of Urd and a timid boy, and Skuld's foretaste of maturity feel like afterthoughts to fill out the number of episodes. But fans of this popular fantasy-romance aren't likely to quibble over problems of narrative structure as long as their favorite characters continue their usual high jinks. (Rated 13 and older: risqué humor, cartoon violence, alcohol use) --Charles SolomonDescription
Belldandy and Keiichi are caught up in the battle over the Earth's Fate When The Lord of Terror suddenly takes over Urd! The Lord of Terror summons the Demon gate, and woe to us all if she opens it! The world will be overrun by demons. The Valkyrie, Lind, is sent from heaven to execute The Lord of Terror by any means necessary and whatever host body it happens to be using. Belldandy in turn is given the holy flute to summon the mighty Midguard Serpent to fight, but The Lord of Terror can jump from one body into another, therefore escaping peril. Will she be able to take up arms against her sister Urd, or Skuld, or even Keiichi?Customer Reviews:
