3 out of 5 stars Dirty Middle-Aged Dancing.......2007-08-28

"One Last Dance" is a Swayze family affair (to quote Mystery Science Theater 3000 "have a Patrick Swayze Christmas!"),complete with Swayze's real-life wife Lisa Niemi, choreography from his mother Patsy, and his daughter Bambi part of the corps de ballet. "One Last Dance" sounds like a sappy clunker, but in some ways it's surprisingly good.

The two major strengths of "One Last Dance" are its music and choreography. The soundtrack is incredibly bittersweet and melancholy,a true tearjerker even when the dialogue is maudlin. The dancers are incredibly talented. It's more of a music video than a movie with its focus on the human body in motion. Both classical music as well as a Brazilian dance song highlight the dancers' strengths.

Unfortunately,"One Last Dance" is burdened with a hopelessly sappy plot. Travis (Swayze),Chryssa (Niemi) and Max (George De La Pena) are reunited for a tribute dance concert. Travis finds out he has a long-lost daughter,a child he never knew he fathered. Max struggles with his talents. Chryssa is dealing with her reunion with her former lover. Everything is melodramatically resolved;there aren't any unexpected plot twists.

Since this is a Patrick Swayze movie, there is a requisite shirtless scene and homoeroticism (Travis gets hit on by the artistic director, and he dances sensually with Max in the final pas de trois)

It's not a MST3K-worthy movie like "Road House",but it is like a French appetizer called an amuse bouche. The dancing is a delight to watch, and the soundtrack is worth listening to (even when one can shut out the plot-or lack of it)

5 out of 5 stars Oh my, but this is beautiful!.......2007-08-24

This movie is Patrick Swayze at his prettiest, I swear! If you thought he was beautiful in Dirty Dancing, that was just a tease! This is Swayze the dancer, and his love of the dance. We may never see him this way again.

I would recommend this as a date movie if you are people who enjoy art, dance, theater and can admire style and form. It was a lovely break from the intense stuff I usually watch - and balance is always a good thing.

1 out of 5 stars Here's hoping it truly is the last dance!.......2007-01-05

This is not Dirty Dancing. The movie had no flow, and when it ended it had no where to go anyway. The acting
was sloppy at best and the dancing, the reason one would buy such a movie, was just tolerable. Don't know what
the director of this bomb was thinking, but here's hoping this was their last film.

Save the Last Dance enjoyed a profitable release in early 2001, with box-office earnings that exceeded anyone's expectations. Its performance illustrates the staying power of a formulaic movie that avoids the pitfalls and clichés that would otherwise render it forgettable. Since there's nothing new here, you'll appreciate the original quirks in a character-based plot that's just around the corner from Flashdance, and just as familiar. Sara (Julia Stiles) gave up a promising ballet career when her mother was killed while rushing to attend her daughter's crucial audition to Juilliard; Sara blames herself for the accident, and at her new, mostly African American high school in Chicago, she's uncertain of her future.

Derek (Sean Patrick Thomas) has no such doubts; his own future is bright, and his attraction to Sara is immediate; they connect (predictably), and Sara's dormant funk emerges, with Derek's coaching, as she learns hip-hop dancing in a local club. Obligatory subplots are equally routine: Derek's sister (Kerry Washington) is a single mom struggling with her child's absentee father; Derek's best friend (Fredro Starr) feels trapped in his gangsta lifestyle; and Sara's once-estranged father (Terry Kinney) is doing his best to correct past mistakes. Within the confines of this standard follow-your-dream drama, director Thomas Carter capitalizes on a script that allows these characters to be real, intelligent, and thoughtful about their lives and their futures. It's obvious that Stiles's dancing was intercut with that of a professional double, but that illusion hardly matters when the rest of the movie's so earnestly positive and genuine. --Jeff Shannon

1 out of 5 stars Disgusting!!!.......2007-09-09

5 stars from any cretin for this, with a composite rating of about 4 1/2?!?! Is this what society's coming to? Is this an example of what's winning awards in America? We are truly doomed! The undergirding message of this movie isn't some supposedly idealistic "talented" (even though stiles has no talent) little wench triumphing, however obliquely, in the face of severe adversity. To the discerning eye, this, in all calm, objectivity, civiltude, and conservatism, was, and is, so obviously a miscegenistic, social-reengineering piece of tripe I felt the bile rising while watching it it was so obivous.

I'm sure this review will, most likely, garner no positive ratings, for being "helpful", from anyone; with over 270 ratings so far, most of them 5's. My hunch says I know how I will be branded. This movie was, and is, one of the rawest most brazen and disgusting pieces of propaganda; I view it as a blistering indictment on the discernability of this nation that so few idiots are able to see this!
I happen to be a high romantic, a large part of what this movie emotionally feeds in to. But I Thessalonians 5:21 says, paraphrased, in part, "test everything and hold to that which is good." And this movie isn't!!! Few movies for me ever get to this level-but I feel compelled to warn the open-minded out there, if there are any-but just the thought there are movies out there like this make me want to throw up.

3 out of 5 stars Descent.......2007-08-22

I've put off seeing this movie because Julia Stiles does nothing for me-and she still doesn't, but the distraction from supporting cast balances her out. Plot wise: anyone who's old enough to remember Flashdance will experience a sense of deja vu. The character's are just younger. There's no real obstacles to overcome-everyone just need to learn to get out of their own way. Which is usually the case in real life as well. This is not a bad movie. It will entertain you if you have nothing better to do at two in the morning.

4 out of 5 stars some hesitations.......2007-06-01

first--despite The New Yorkers vulgar description of Miss Stiles as "The reigning teen queen" I find her an intelligent actress willing to take on challenging roles. Second I hope folks have noticed that many of the "teen" remakes of classics--I'm thinking of Shakespeare and Jane Austen --have been quite well done, and often much better than laborious efforts to film the original.

This film "pace" the younger sets comments seems to me a thoughtful piece of work. The director is taking on a rather delicate problem--and I don't mean interacial romance. What troubles me in this film is the relationship between the sexes. I want to be careful here because I do not mean to be preaching some "sexist" agenda--however I am troubled by the treatment of black men in this film who because of what I regard as a feminization of the west that began some thirty five years ago--largely for economic reasons men--especially black men (though in this film ironically most particularly a white man) are become economically marginalized. Another of Miss Stile films--a remake of Taming of the Shrew makes passing reference to this. Good for her!

OK--the dancing was great and the film is well worth watching--I paid attention and thought it worth sounding pompous and longwinded to say whay I felt about it.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastique ! .......2007-02-08

J'ai regardé ceci avec ma fille et c'est un remonte très le film. Il a multi l'appel intergénérationnelle. (I watched this with my daughter and it is a very uplifting movie. It has multi generational appeal.)

1 out of 5 stars Making a trip to the dawn!.......2007-02-04

I definitely tired when the people do this kind of stuff. And think they can get the cheese before the mice, that bother me a lot, I so hard, but since I'm not making a copy-cat of another comercial of a quality product, like those crazy bees, Gosh I hate those utterly insane bees but I absoultley concur about the made statement a week before about the problems of you can have if you think milk is the solution to the problem, I know Albama is a great place but I think it will get more overrated with that poor scale made by sea people.

4 out of 5 stars not bad, but the inter racial romance is a bit awkward.......2007-02-26

beautiful leading young actress. cliched, lukewarm and hollow screenplay and storyline. nice to watch but nothing special to praise about. but mtv should do this kinda movies more instead of those self-abusing jackass series.

4 out of 5 stars Save the Last Dance 2 - DVD.......2007-02-20

DVD Was Good, not as good as the first movie.

4 out of 5 stars Lighter Story Than The Original. Nice Final Dance Scene..........2007-01-19

In this movie, the script writers took all the HEAVY out of it. The two main characters are beautiful on camera. This sequel chose to focus on the story versus the dancing. The first film had a more compelling story.

However...there is something that makes me like this one better...although I LOVE the first one's final dance solo better and have watched that part of the film over and over.

This one just had a lot more funny characters and was notably LIGHTER in tone. The surprise is the final dance group number that is delightful.

Isabella Miko is STUNNING as Sarah. However her dance numbers just don't sizzle (aside from one early ballet solo)...mostly just so so. Columbus Short has an ELECTRIFYING smile and made the movie doubly enjoyable. Jacqueline Bisset was excellent as the hard nosed Julliard dance professor.

This is a light film that will make you smile.

5 out of 5 stars For All The Hip Hop Heads.......2007-01-14

If you saw Save The Last Dance and like the movie then I think you will like Save The Last Dance 2. While the cast isn't big names the actors and actress are very well known. Anyone who studies dance and the art of dance right now will recognize the name Columbus Short as he is the lead male in this movie he is also a choreographer for some of today's top artist. Izabella Miko fits into her role perfectly as seeing that she travel from England to learn how to be a balliernia. With her heart set on being the best she realizes that her love for hiphop and dance will near fail. But when she finds herself having to choose between the two she doesn't know which way to turn but she does make the realization that she can't live without both. This movie was a movie that I can see myself watching quite often it wasn't a big hit like the first Save The Last Dance with Julia Stiles & Sean Patrick Thomas but it was defiantly a great follow up.

4 out of 5 stars Good movie, shouldn't have been a sequel.......2006-10-14

I completely agree with the other review. I liked this movie, but to me it was stupid to make it a second. Granted Julia Stiles (the first Sarah) has gotten a lot bigger as an actress since the first one still.... seeing how she is the only character from the first one C'MON! I just couldn't get over that! I would have liked the movie better if it had no ties to the first one.... Welcome to Julliard or some other title would have been better. With that said, it was entertaining, although the audience it is reaching (girls through pre teens) it really shouldn't have had that EXTREMELY INTIMATE scene that was completely unnecessary! All in all good movie, I'm sure teenagers have seen more sex than this but if you are like me you might want to hold off giving this to your preteen until you have had "the talk".

Jack Slater is an action-film hero played by Arnold Schwarzenegger. An old projectionist (Robert Prosky) hands a magic movie ticket to Jack's biggest preteen fan (Austin O'Brien), and the kid steps right inside the latest Jack Slater film, becoming the actor star's sidekick in gunfights and car chases. But when Jack's nemesis (Charles Dance) gets his hands on the ticket, the fight busts out into the real world and Jack (à la Toy Story's Buzz Lightyear) refuses to believe he's a fictional character. Director John McTiernan churns some nifty scenes out of this setup, although the fiction-to-reality shuffle is not as deft as in, say, Woody Allen's The Purple Rose of Cairo, and the plot needs the kind of logic and discipline found in that classic when-worlds-collide film Back to the Future. Still, Schwarzenegger has moments of wit and smashing action, and we get a faux-movie trailer advertising an intriguing new shoot-'em-up: "Something's rotten in the State of Denmark--and Hamlet is taking out the trash!"

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Rare Edition of film, but can be found for cheap if u know where to look..........2007-07-06

First off, this edition of the film is a double sided dvd which contains the widescreen and full screen versions of the film. This edition is hard to find because it looks EXACTLY like the release which only contains the full screen version. Rather than pay $35 for the widescreen version of the film from a seller on amazon, you should go to hastings and sift through there copies looking on the back at the small box below arnold. It should say "widescreen or standard formats". I got my copy for $6.99. Nothing against amazon, but the few individual sellers trying to charge a fortune for this film are just trying to make a cheap buck. Amazon itself is the best place on the web or off to buy dvds.

As far as the film itself, the first half is absolutely awesome arnold-tastic action, but the second half get kinda dull. The first makes it worth adding to any action collection. Ice cream cone to the skull.

5 out of 5 stars An emblematic cult movie! .......2007-07-05

"The last action hero" is a puzzled fable, a movie within a movie, a smart recreation of our modern vision about the seminal concept of the hero, rescuing the essence of its meaning, spiced of clever humor that truly demands from the viewer a very detailed knowledge of certain classics of the genre.

Jean Epstein as well as many other theorists of the cinema, have established over and over the fact to watch a movie into a dark hall surrounded of other people that barely or nothing know about, it `s very close to what we might a sensorial experience, a cathartic evasion (and sometimes a spiritual meeting, just in very reduced exceptions like Tarkovsky, Bresson, for instance). But Mac Thiernan knew to employ smartly all the available devices to convey us through this labyrinths of missed images, memories and livings immersed in those frames that run 24 times by second, because the movie occupies a place into our contemporary memory, according the level you regard it.

Pitifully, the message was not entirely understood, due perhaps the presence of Scharwzeeger meant for many people full action without another second reading.

5 out of 5 stars The Dumbing Down of America.......2007-02-23

The following story will tell you why this movie bombed at the box office.

While visiting family in Miami one of my cousins went to see the movie. When he got home he was telling me how much the movie stunk. As he was talking it became obvious to me that he had taken the movie seriously. So I yelled at him "It's a parody!! He's making fun of action movies in general and himself in particular!!" I could see the lightbulb go on over his head and he went right out and saw it again.

Needless to say, he loved the film. As do I. It's not often that a big star has the guts to make fun of himself just to make his fans laugh. So if you have this film languishing in your collection somewhere you need to see it with this in mind. It's parody. Satire. Comedy! Watch it and have fun.

5 out of 5 stars GREATEST MOVIE EVER!!.......2007-02-22

Arnold is the world's greatest actor. If there was justice in the world, he would be given the Oscar every year. I actually moved to California, so that Arnold would be my governor. Last year, I voted for him twice. This is his finest film. Note the superb cinematography and witty repartee. I heart Ahnold.

1 out of 5 stars Lousy Movie.......2006-06-28

I love a lot of Arnold's movies but this movie is just a one time viewing.
My overall opinion a horrible movie, would have been great if it was actually funny.

Description

Sara (Julia Stiles) wants to be a ballerina, but her dreams are cut short by the sudden death of her mother. She moves in with her father (Terry Kinney), who she has not seen for a long time, in Chicago, mainly in the ghetto. She gets transferred to a new school where she is the only white girl there. Her life takes a turn for the better when she is friends with Chenille (Kerry Washington). Later, she falls in love with Chenille's brother, Derek (Sean Patrick Thomas).

Is it real, or is it J-Lo? Both, as it turns out. There are 55 minutes of the actual Selena here, filmed live at Houston's Astrodome in 1995. The 23-year-old Tejano singer performs her light, catchy tunes all in Spanish, save for a '70s disco medley (which includes, poignantly, "I Will Survive"); polished and charismatic, if not extraordinarily talented, Selena was clearly on the way up before her death at 23 at the hands of an employee. That she was later portrayed onscreen by Jennifer Lopez, who has eclipsed Selena's stardom by far, no doubt partly explains the inclusion on the DVD of a 45-minute documentary (truthfully, more like a lengthy puff piece for Entertainment Tonight) about the Selena biopic. If you want to know how the filmmakers made those tough decisions about hair, clothes, and lip-syncing, you will not be disappointed. But the real thing's better. --Sam Graham

5 out of 5 stars Robbie Williams - What We Did Last Summer.......2007-03-08

if you haven't had this DVD and you like Robbie Williams (not necessarally a fan), you have to get this DVD! you'll become a fan in no time!

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME.......2006-10-10

I agree with all the reviewers about this concert. I love Robbie Williams performances and yes! it puzzles me and I still don't comprehend why isn't he popular in the USA. I travel to Europe every year and that is how I discovered him many years ago. I'm forever in search of music and just like I "got into" Robbie, I had found excellent singers from many other different countries, so if you don't mind listening to music in another language do explore, it is there.... and I'm glad because here in the US we are not producing anything worth buying, so keep up the good work BRITS.,and CONTINUE to produce and sponsor worthwhile singers.

5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING.......2005-12-17

TRULY A GEM. IVE WATCHED THIS CONCERT ABOUT 30 TIMES AND I STILL KEEP ON WATCHING AND ENJOYING IT OVER AND OVER AGAIN, TRULY FANTASTIC I WOULD HAVE GIVEN ANYTHING TO HAVE BEEN THERE, AFTER WATCHING ROBBIES PERFORMANCE WATCHING ANYOTHER LIVE CONCERT IS A LET-DOWN, TRUE MAGIC.

5 out of 5 stars So rock n roll, so corporate suit...........2005-12-14

I agree with the other reviewers on this one - this is one live DVD you don't want to miss. It is beyond me why he is not as popular in the States as he is in Europe. Robbie Williams manages to combine his natural presence on stage and rapport with his fans with absolute professionalism. Hence "so rock n roll, so corporate suit", as he sings in Come Undone. You can feel the atmosphere of this temperate summer evening seep into your living room as you watch, and don't be surprised if you find yourself jumping along in time with the songs and clapping when they're finished. I do it even when I'm watching it alone!
So: five stars for quality and length of performance, both in terms of Robbie's own talent and the setup of the DVD. Five stars also for addressing a huge audience, because this show will appeal to established fans and convert all those who haven't succumbed to Robbie's energy and charms.

The final episodes of the broadcast series Ah My Goddess (2005) introduce additional elements from Norse legends, including the Fenris Wolf and the Midgard Serpent. With some help from Skuld, Belldandy unleashes her full powers to save Urd and Keiichi from the Lord of Terror, who is also an embodiment of the Ultimate Destruction Program. Virtue and the love between Belldandy and Keiichi triumph over evil, as Terror suffers the humiliating fate of being degaussed. The story really ends with episode 24: A romance between a child version of Urd and a timid boy, and Skuld's foretaste of maturity feel like afterthoughts to fill out the number of episodes. But fans of this popular fantasy-romance aren't likely to quibble over problems of narrative structure as long as their favorite characters continue their usual high jinks. (Rated 13 and older: risqué humor, cartoon violence, alcohol use) --Charles Solomon

Description

Belldandy and Keiichi are caught up in the battle over the Earth's Fate When The Lord of Terror suddenly takes over Urd! The Lord of Terror summons the Demon gate, and woe to us all if she opens it! The world will be overrun by demons. The Valkyrie, Lind, is sent from heaven to execute The Lord of Terror by any means necessary and whatever host body it happens to be using. Belldandy in turn is given the holy flute to summon the mighty Midguard Serpent to fight, but The Lord of Terror can jump from one body into another, therefore escaping peril. Will she be able to take up arms against her sister Urd, or Skuld, or even Keiichi?

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An excellent end to the first season.......2007-01-16

This wonderful series finishes up by resolving the Lord of Terror arc. When we left off, Urd was possessed by the mysterious entity. Belldandy had removed her power limiter to attempt to save her sister and the world. but h can freely move between and possess other bodies at will, making him impossible to pin down. The Almighty sends down the Valkyrie Lind to kill the Lord of Terror, but as long as he possesses someone that Belldandy cares about, she won't let Lind finish off the Lord of Terror. The way he was finally brought down... well I certainly didn't see it coming.

The final two episodes were specials in Japan, I think. The first involves Urd reverting to her child state and Skuld being advanced to an adult age. Both of these episodes were nicely done and touching, and seeing chibi-Belldandy AND Aoshima getting more Urd-style punishment makes it even sweeter. Problem is, now all of us AMG fans have to wait until Season 2 is released.

The entire series has been wonderful, with great storylines and beautiful animation and characters, and the final volume is no different. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Best Of The Series.......2007-01-10

"Last Dance" has four episodes. The first two wrap up the crisis introduced mid-way through the last episode of Volume 5. There are several "false dawns" here- places where the villain is erroneously thought to be defeated- but our heroes have two things going for them: Belldandy's steadfast love, and Sculd's cleverness (even though the technology employed at the end is a bit dated now.) Also interesting is the continued borrowing of elements from Norse mythology.
The final two episodes give each of Belldandy's sisters a chance for romances of their own. Urd's is interesting (Urd has always been my favorite character in the series), but Sculd's is the real gem - she is suddenly propelled into the body of a young woman, with the emotions that go along with it, and her first crush is on the young human male she knows best- Keiichi! It was wonderful to see Sculd's view of Keiichi turned 180 degrees, and even if the audience suspects all along that it won't last even a whole episode, maybe this helped set the stage for the warmer, more tolerant view of Keiichi that Sculd holds in the Ah! My Goddess! movie.

4 out of 5 stars good stuff.......2006-08-28

The fight between Beldandy and the Lord of Terror was completely amazing, and its conclusion left me awestruck. Plus it was nice for Skuld and Urd to get an episode and Skuld's episode was one of the funniest in the series! Best. Ah! My Goddess series. ever.

Description

Powerhouse creative forces unite, and sparks fly, in Mirra Bank's award-winning LAST DANCE. Bank follows the dazzling Pilobolus Dance Theater and legendary author-illustrator, Maurice Sendak (Where the Wild Things Are) as they collaborate on the dance-theater work that honors a haunting holocaust legacy. LAST DANCE weaves rehearsal footage, probing interviews, chilling Nazi propaganda footage and breathtaking performance into a thrilling insight into the creative process. The film holds nothing back as philosophies clash, confrontations abound, and artistic disaster threatens at every turn. But in the end we are rewarded as Pilobolus dancers -- pure bolts of force and grace -- give life to a stark and stunning dancework.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Full Length Modern Dance Documentary!.......2006-06-29

This dvd gives us a very complete view of the creation and rehearsal of the dance theater piece entitled "A Selection". This is a dance piece about a very difficult subject to handle in dance: the Holocaust. The original idea for this was developed by Maurice Sendak who collaborates with the modern dance company known as Pilobolus Dance Theatre. To make this clear, please understand that the name of this documentary dvd is "Last Dance" and the name of the dance piece they develop about the Holocaust is "A Selection". The entire performance of "A Selection" is not included, but at the end of the documentary, highlights from one of the actual performances are included. The style of dance is a somewhat acrobatic modern dance. The dancing itself is very exciting, but we are exposed to quite a bit of excitment from the very emotional and vocal verbal exchanges that take place over all the creative differences, not the least being how to portray such gut-wrenching subject matter in dance. The rehearsal scenes are very exciting, taking place in a dance room with great camera work. This is a very lively documentary! In terms of artistry and dance technique, I highly recommend this, but I should warn viewers of some features that might influence whether they want to buy this: first, there is quite a bit of nudity of both men and women(the reason for this is explained as being artistically necessary and it was something they argued about quite a bit); with all the arguing, there is a lot af adult language; finally, the dance rehearsals include, as all dance rehearsals do, light hearted moments and humor and the use of humor as part of the artistic vehicle is also disscussed; because of the seriousness of the subject(the Holocaust) this might offend some viewers(and it has!). The dvd also includes plenty of bonus interviews and background on all the dancers, so the total running time is about two hours. If you are not sensitive to the drawbacks mentioned, you should enjoy this greatly.

2 out of 5 stars WARNING: THE LAST DANCE shw is NOT INCLDD.......2005-04-21

This is a behind the scenes look at the creative process and collaberation behind the "where the wild things are bk''s illustrator (Maurice Sendek) and the Pilobolus dance theaters intrepreation of their 'LAST DANCE' piece.
What you get is footage of alot of rehearsals, and creative studiochoreographic ideas, as well as footage of the effort behind cstmng & stage backdrop.
WHAT IS MISSING is the final completed performance of the LAST DANCE piece, they show a few brief seconds of performance highlights, but not any of the performance from start to finish. I FEEL VERY DECEIVED & MISLEAD by the packaging on the DVD, YOU DO NOT GET 'LAST DANCE' as a filmed choreogrphic piece, you only see the work that goes into creating the entire mis en scene and choreogrphy. THIS DVD IS NOT WORTH THE FULL PRICE, BE WARNED, you are not receiving what the title and packaging leads you to beleive you will see.

4 out of 5 stars Pilobolus.......2004-12-31

A no holds insider's view of how the unique dance Company Pilobolus creates. No other company in America uses the group approach for creating spectacular dances. It works for them but Sendak appears to have found the process very stressful.
