One of the greatest scandals in American corporate history is chronicled in the riveting documentary Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room. Based on the bestselling book by Fortune magazine reporters Bethany McLean and Peter Elkin, and directed by Alex Gibney (who also produced The Trials of Henry Kissinger), the film is an epic morality tale, drawing upon a wealth of insider interviews and archival material to show how Enron, once the nation's seventh largest corporate entity, essentially faked its bookkeeping to report profits that never existed. The corrupt and closely-guarded mismanagement by Enron executives (including Kenneth Lay and Jeffrey Skilling, later placed on criminal trial) is revealed through such heinous concepts as "Hypothetical Future Value" (a way of reaping fortunes based on false profit projections) and the use of offshore "shell" companies to hide the massive losses that eventually toppled the company (along with the venerable Arthur Anderson accounting firm) and left 20,000 employees jobless. As a maddening portrait of hubris and white-collar crime, Enron transcends political and corporate boundaries by showing how smart and powerful men grew blinded by greed and brought ruin upon themselves, along with thousands of otherwise innocent victims. For better and worse, it's a perfect double-feature with eye-opening 2004 documentary The Corporation. --Jeff Shannon

Amazingly Engrossing.......2007-09-09
From the time this documentary starts you are captured. I have never been so engrossed in a story about Corporate America before. The arrogance of business and the manipulation for self gain was astounding. Awesome how the unravelling began with one simple question. I have watched this now several times and I never cease to be amazed. A "must" to watch.
Sickening!.......2007-08-30
I had always wondered how this fiasco could be allowed to happen in the U.S. After watching this movie, I now understand! It is sad that a country such as ours could allow this type of theft, larceny, and destruction to happen to thousands of innocent people!
The hyper-capitalistic puppet masters of the invisible build Frankenstein's monster.......2007-08-21
Imagine starting a company that comes up with the idea of selling potential without actually realizing that potential first. Imagine then without the realization of that potential that loads of people invest in the idea because the CEO's know how to put on a show. Then imagine the idea becoming so big that a whole country invests in the idea. Then imagine that the company selling the idea gets so big that it ends up owning a massive share of that nation's power grid. Then imagine that the company starts telling the power company operators to perform lots of blackouts and downtime so that it can hold the nation to ransom before it turns it back on again by demanding government funds (tax money). Then imagine on top of this that the CEO's just sign themselves big fat paychecks into the tens of millions and decide to head off home when everything is falling apart because someone asked the question... "How does Enron make money?"
While the above schematic might not be the exact way things where actually done, it still is but in a more complex way that this documentary surprising makes simple for everyone to understand. We are dealing with a company that dealt in selling the imagination and then played the evil demigod when it eventually had its way. It is a documentary also about the CEO's and personalities which got too big for a nation to manage. This is when greed becomes hyper-greed and when making millions out of public disasters was considered a normal 9 to 5. Imagine Enron employees just saying `Burn baby burn' while wildfires rage under power lines. Imagine Enron employees finding loopholes in government contracts they designed and calling those ambiguous areas `fat boy' and `death star' to make millions from the gaps. Then stop calling this just imagination. This is the real thing!
Enron is essentially about the abuse of trust. It is about a nation built on freedoms and liberties actually becoming hostage to those freedoms and liberties when extremist capitalists will cash in on anything. This isn't just about cooking the books. This is about cooking independence into slavery so that a few guys could make loads of money.
In a strange sort of way it is hard to actually imagine that these guys did anything wrong in terms of how they developed a very imaginative system of corporation into a business. The tendency for them to exploit a weakness in a deal was bad character, but nothing that is that unusual in today's world. All this is considered somewhat expected in big business except for one thing. They did all this by gambling with the savings of over 20,000 US Citizens (most of them Joe Soap families with kids) while they also played with the national power grid (how many people indirectly died and suffered remains uncertain but real) to either make more money or to get their own backsides off the hook. In a way people everywhere look up to models like this but in the end Disneyland just isn't real and that is what is important to learn (and some former CEOs are learning it hard, like Jeffrey Skillings) who is serving 24 years and 4 months in prison.
A Disappointment.......2007-08-14
Could have been a seminal work on some of the most egregious robber-barons of the 1990's, but succumbed to a ridiculous partisanship characterized by heavy-handed Bush-bashing -- how tiresome (this even tho Kenny-Boy was head of Ann Richards's finance committee when Bush challenged her). Meanwhile, one of the documentary's great moralizers was investigations-target Bill Lerach, and one of the chief complainers was the since-recalled Gray Davis, who was so incompetent he couldn't sell beer on a troopship.
Entertaining, not thorough & informative.......2007-07-23
It was too dramatized, I thought. Also I didn't like the stripper scene because it was too long and too much nudity for my taste... gross. You lose concentration from what they're talking about. They could have just narrated the story about the strippers, why show so much nudity in a corporate scandal documentary???
Better off reading the book called "Conspiracy of Fools"... very good reading material and informative, not too dramatic like this "documentary"

4 Definitive Reasons..........2007-09-04
...why aliens have never visited us:
1. The laws of physics don't allow it
Folks, the nearest star is 4 light years away. This means it takes light 4 years to travel from there to Earth. In order for space travel to be realistic you would need a craft that travels greater than the speed of light. Unfortunately, in order for matter to travel AT the speed of light you would need an infinite amount of energy. Apparently the aliens have a gas tank that holds multiple infinite amounts of energy.
2. The Federal Government is one of the most incompetent entities ever created
One argument for lack of evidence is due to the government's ability to keep people from talking. Gee, why don't the feds use this fabulous influence they have over people to stop murder, rape, robbery, etc. They couldn't keep Watergate or Iran-Contra a secret, but somehow they are able to keep a lid on the greatest story in human history (for 60-some years, no less)?
3. MONEY!!!
People risk their lives & freedom every day for relatively paltry amounts of money compared to what could be earned being the first person to come forward with credible evidence of itelligent alien life. Successful theives, robbers, embezzlers, spies and the like are paupers compared to these potential riches.
4. YouTube
The use of video & photographic technology has ballooned in the past 30 years. You'd think at the very least a chance encounter would have been captured by now; certainly there are enough people walking around with the technology right in their pockets to make this happen, yet there is still no *definitive* evidence of aliens or their spaceships.
When a documentary like this appears on 60 Minutes instead of the SciFi Channel then I'll start paying attention.
Brilliant Film.......2007-04-12
This documentary has some interviews that I'm amazed took place at all. In fact, 2 of the people interviewed died shortly after. *Spooky Music Plays*
For those of you who are looking at the $239 price tag on this thing, don't worry, because this film is being re-made as we speak. New soundtrack, new interviews, and I'm sure a few other goodies to boot.
This DVD is well worth seeing. If you have an abundance of cash, go ahead and buy this original version. If not, hold on a while and get the updated version once it hits the scene.
UFO: reality bites.......2007-02-11
"Out of the Blue" is a really interesting doco presenting both a worldwide collated visual data on UFO, and political games surrounding the phenomena unexplained.
A DVD set of "The KGB Secret Files" about space abductions, UFO and alliances is a logical extension to info this film has provided.
a review from a discerning Christian's perspective.......2007-02-02
This was a pretty intriguing video. Anytime you have a collection of testimony of UFO's from generals, presidents, and astronauts, along with footage of "UFO's", you got a darned entertaining video.
A few knocks against it before I make the faint theoretical biblical tie-in. This ting is way expensive and hard to track down for cheap (I've never seen a DVD go from like 15 bucks to $120 used!!! What's up? Can't the producers, or discovery channel, or whoever make some more of these if they're so popular? The government doesn't really give a hoot, methinks, do they?)
Another bone I have to pick: Don't the supposed "UFO" sightings in Bejing, China and the Miami skyline LOOK REMARKABLY LIKE BLIMPS REFLECTING LIGHT!!!?????
I find it hard to believe that they're anything else considering that like only one guy with a camera took the time to spot this thing if it really was a UFO when there's like millions of people around these two areas, especially.
Anywho, the Phoenix deal is very compelling; it would help if the video focused a little more on the many more photos of that deal that I think exist,... and to be balanced perhaps question military officials on what else it could be, like some type of holographic weapons design or something.
As for "UFO's" in the bible? Well, there are a number of far left theories about the "cloud of fire" that traveled around Moses and the like. I've also seen documentaries in which fairly dated paintings of the Virgin Mary and the Christ child have what appear to be a metallic disc in the air in the background. The vision of Ezekiel (Ezekiel chapter 1) is certainly a compelling story about beings looking out from windows of discs, "wheels within the wheels", in which the bible declares that "the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels" -- a clear indication that these supposedly angelic beings were operating in some type of mechanical transport. If Godly angels operate using these things... then what about the fallen angels taking advantage of technology? That of course is where the extreme right church view comes in: that all UFO's are either demonic deception or actually demons themselves in transport.
For an open, yet not-too-fanatical biblical debate on the matter, I suggest checking out Pastor Chuck Missler (of Calvary Chapel) and some of his teachings, which include a video entitled "Return of the Nephilim" I believe. This biblical theory suggests that the flood came because angels (the sons of God) came into the "daughters of men" (Genesis 6) producing a race of supposed supernatural beings denoted as the nephilim (which are actually the UFO aliens). Pretty interesting theories; many in the Calvary Chapel movement, for the record, totally despise the guy.
And while you're there on Missler's site, you can check out stuff about Jesus. He's pretty interesting too, you know.
Speaking of, one reviewer (John Marvel) states that people who follow this stuff are doing so out of ignorance and boredom. I suggest looking at that cat's reviews. Yeah, .....sleepers. And most of his reviews are on stuff he himself gave a one star rating!!! How sad is that? Who's got the mundane life now, buddy?

Much will be made of Julia Roberts's wardrobe in Erin Brockovich--a brash parade of daring hemlines and Wonderbra confidence. Roberts is unabashedly sexy in the title role of this fact-based comedy-drama, but she and director Steven Soderbergh are far too intelligent to rely solely on high heels and cleavage. Susannah Grant's brassy screenplay fuels this winning combination of star, director, and material, firing on all pistons with maximum efficiency. With Ed Lachman, his noted cinematographer from The Limey, Soderbergh tackles this A-list project with the fervor of an independent, combining a no-frills look with kinetic panache and the same brisk editorial style he used in the justly celebrated Out of Sight.
Broke and desperate, the twice-divorced single mom Erin bosses her way into a clerical job with attorney Ed Masry (Albert Finney), who's indebted to Erin after failing to win her traffic-injury case. Erin is soon focused on suspicious connections between a mighty power company, its abuse of toxic chromium, and the poisoned water supply of Hinkley, California, where locals have suffered a legacy of death and disease. Matching the dramatic potency of Norma Rae and Silkwood, Erin Brockovich filters cold facts through warm humanity, especially in Erin's rapport with dying victims and her relationship with George (superbly played by Aaron Eckhart), a Harley-riding neighbor who offers more devotion than Erin's ever known. Surely some of these details have been embellished for dramatic effect, but the factual basis of Erin Brockovich adds a boost of satisfaction, proving that greed, neglect, and corporate arrogance are no match against a passionate crusader. (Trivia note: The real Erin Brockovich appears briefly as a diner waitress.) --Jeff Shannon
Description
A real woman. A real story. A real triumph. Julia Roberts stars as Erin Brockovich, a feisty young mother who fought for justice any way she knew how. Desperate for a job to support herself and her three children, she convinces attorney Ed Masry (Albert Finney) to hire her, and promptly stumbles upon a monumental law case against a giant corporation. Now, Erin's determined to take on this powerful adversary even though no law firm has dared to do it before. And while Ed doesn't want anything to do with the case, Erin won't take "no" for an answer. So the two begin an incredible and sometimes hilarious fight that will bring a small town to its feet and a huge company to its knees.

Erin Brockovich.......2007-08-09
This movie is a must have. This true story makes you think about things and helps you realize that you can change things if you put your mind to it.
Erin Brockovich.......2007-07-17
This movie had a real STORY to tell and what one person can really do, if they're committed to doing something about a company who thinks it's above anyone and anything else! I enjoyed it because I thought it was very well done and was also a TRUE story.
Very course language (probably for authenticity) and not for anyone under 17 or 18, I would suggest. Anyone younger probably wouldn't get anything out of it anyway. Its geared for adults anyway due to the subject matter (chemicals seeping into private wells, etc.).
A New Kind of Role for Julia.......2007-05-10
This movie is worth seeing for a lot of reasons, and for Julia fans, it's a movie that definitely isn't Julia playing Julia, as she has so many times. I have a feeling she had to stretch to portray the brassy, pushy, rude Erin, and she did so brilliantly.
Erin is one of those ladies you love to hate, until you see the goodness and intelligence that may not be the first thing that most people notice about her. And she's a bulldog. Once she gets moving in one direction, there's no stopping her which is a good thing, at least in the true story that this movie portrayed.
This is a funny, heartwarming, and eye-opening movie that's really worth seeing.
True story of David and Goliath in modern terms.......2007-04-20
PG&E, Pacific Gas And Electric company, unintentionally polluted ground water for the town of Hinkley, CA, but tried to cover it up rather than admitting they had caused a major health problem to the residents. This cover up went on for a long time, until a barely-employable spitfire named Erin Brockovich, working for the lawyer Ed Masry, uncovers a strange file of real estate documents which include medical records. Curious as to why a real estate file would contain medical documents, she begins to research the case.
What follows is the true story of a woman named Erin Brockovich, who together with Ed Masry uncovered a major cover up of a health hazard resulting in one of the largest settlements in history. This film is extremely well done, dividing its time between Erin the worker, Erin the single-mom trying her best to raise her three kids, and Erin the human being. The movie skates over the fact that the real Erin got sick along with the rest of the town (although you can see some cut scenes of her illness in the "deleted scenes" feature).
The movie is definitely a dramatized reproduction of the true story, though it still manages to hold very close to the truth. A&E has done a special on the Erin Brockovich case which proves the movie stays true to form. Julia Roberts as Erin and Albert Finney as Ed Masry both give excellent performances. The movie isn't necessarily fast-paced but the dialogue is intriguing, intense at times, and funny at times, keeping the entertainment level high. The acting and dialogue alone are enough to carry this film.
If you're a fan of the little guy taking on the giant, or a fan of Julia Roberts, either way you won't be disappointed. Like Grisham's fictional 'The Rainmaker', you'll feel satisfied that sometimes the little guy can win ... in real life. I recommend a 'buy'. Enjoy!
LM McMillin.......2007-03-18
It was and excellent movie and the interviews with the real Erin Brockovich and Ed Masry made the movie even better.

With refreshing intelligence, A Walk to Remember offers welcome relief from the recent onslaught of teen-movie crudeness. Adapted from the novel by Nicholas Sparks and transplanted from 1958 to the present day, this admirable teen romance recognizes that two 18-year-olds--Landon (Shane West) and Jamie (pop singer Mandy Moore)--can be smart, mature, and sensible about the very real love they share. He's a popular kid in the cool crowd. She's got a goody-goody reputation as the dowdy daughter of a local minister (Peter Coyote); her values and priorities aren't rooted in peer pressure, and Landon feels blessed by her self-assured nobility. Their mutual affection inevitably heads into Love Story territory, but the movie is honest enough to survive its own schmaltz, and its attractive cast (including Daryl Hannah as Landon's mom) embraces a tone of sincerity and mutual respect. Finally... a teen movie with teens you can admire. --Jeff Shannon

An Amazing Flim!.......2007-08-14
I find myself to be in quite the same situation as Jamie Sullivan (Mandy Moore)... She is a Christan Girl, Who doesn't care what other people think about her, Often being teased because of how she dresses, what music she listens to, well frankly her lifestyle!
She has a passion for Astrolagy! Which is strange to Landon (Shane west), for at one time he comes upon her walking in a Cemetary at night (Jamie planing on setting up her telescope)!
I REALLY love this movie, it's romanic, sweet, inspiaring and Uplifting!
I highly recomend this movie to ANYBODY!
Jamie.......2007-08-05
When I first saw this film, I found myself completely infatuated with the heroine. But I wasn't fully sure why. Yeah, she was beautiful, but most young women in the world of entertainment are these days.Jamie was sweet, and intelligent, but I've seen those things before, as well. Then it hit me-the telescope. She had this love and passion for astronomy. From the moment I saw her entering the cemetery, in the dead of night, to pursue her love of the celestial, it was over for me: I have never been so enchanted with a character. Now, I, personally, can take astronomy or leave it. But it's what it represents that makes her so appealing. Most people in America do things because of how they wish to be perceived within their peer group. But Jamie is into astronomy for its own sake. It is something she loves, for her own reasons. What other motivation could she have? After all, nobody is going to get elected homecoming queen for lugging a telescope around a cemetery at night. It's not something you do to be accepted. It's something she did because of who she was.
She was so charming, and so beautiful, but also so strong and independent. So kind, but also so sincere.Jamie was as close to the ideal woman as I can imagine. Yes, I know, I know.....she's not real(although I do seem to recall reading that she was inspired by a real person). But the response she awakens within me is quite real.Based upon some of the comments I've heard from other guys, I can tell that I'm not the only one who sees her in this light. They say you can't wear out a dvd. But I have the feeling I will be putting that theory to the test.
An uplifting movie about a Christian main character.......2007-07-25
I first saw this on TV, and decided to order it. The language must have been cleaned up for TV, because I was shocked at the use of bad language (four letter words) in this movie. Otherwise, it is an uplifting movie about a main character who is Christian. Instead of totally ridiculing Christians as most films do, this one shows the importance of faith in one's life. I would have given this five stars if not for the vulgar language. I was surprised at the ending, and love the song, "Cry", which is played during the rolling credits. My daughter heard this song years ago, and performs it well, singing and playing guitar.
Surpising Delightful.......2007-07-17
Mandy Moore has just way too much talent! Is there anything this singer-actress can't do exceptionally well? And she was only 17 when she made this film!
Langdon Carter is a popular bad boy whose life is an endless series of teenage pranks. One night he goes too far in a car chase with police and ends up being disciplined with menial extra-curricular activities including tutoring on Saturdays, being in the spring play, and helping the janitorial staff at school. This twist of fate connects him with Jamie Sullivan, the Reverand's daughter, and a somewhat old fashioned student. Langdon finds her peculiar, too Christian, too into her telescope, and dressed funny. But the spring play changes all that when Jamie's singing and glamorous nightclub act wins the audience and Langdon's heart. From the impromptu onstage kiss begins a romance that not only changes Langdon's life but Jamie's as well. The movie is based on the book but stands alone in itself. Mandy Moore is stunning so it is hard to believe she doesn't attract Langdon from the beginning and Shane West plays his character's transformation well.
A really touching story.......2007-07-04
This sweet chick flick really made me cry. Some teen romances are so cheesy like the Notebook. It's so bad it makes you roll your eyes. But "A Walk to Remember" is different. It's touching and sweet in a modern, beautiful way. I really did cry through the movie, especially the part where Jamie is dying and they get married. What's so beautiful and real is that London wasn't such a good person before he meet Jamie and she changed him and made him a better person. And they fell in love. But the romance and the sweet touching moments where she realizes she loves him, where he finally comes to terms with who he is, when she dies, when they marry, when he forgives his father aren't corny like "The Notebook" there beautifuly acted and really bittersweet. The tears just came rolling down my cheek. Especially when Switchfoot starts to sing and Jamie's walking down the asile and London is there and they're about to say their vows. Two young people who finally deserve your respect onscreen. Instead of the usual teen-gross out comedy, this is instead a deeply moving drama that's about faith and life and love. Mandy Moore is amazing.

This story about a day in the life of an independent record store, truly a threatened species, screeches with the sound of teenagers falling apart emotionally every five minutes. The script, which feels like an old guy's idea of how kids talk and think, concerns the young employees of a Delaware music shop faced with imminent extinction. While the ship is sinking, the staff indulge in tantrums, depressions, and run-ins with low self-esteem. There's a lot of noise in this thing, but not a lot is really said. Rory Cochrane has the best part as a secretive guy who loses the store's proceeds one night while gambling, Anthony LaPaglia is the adult boss and unofficial dad to the others, Renée Zellweger plays a promiscuous girl, and Liv Tyler is OK as a lovestruck sweet thing trying to get up the nerve to express her feelings to a fellow employee. --Tom Keogh

One of the best movies!.......2007-05-16
I love this movie. It makes me feel young. Damn the man!
Loved it!.......2007-05-13
This is one of my favorite movies growing up. Very fun, and has a good overall storyline.
Good Movie.......2007-05-06
A little bit crazy. But over all an excellent movie. I have watched it several times.
Classic Teen Movie.......2007-05-02
Empire Records is one of those movies that never gets "played out". It has a fresh, youthful, captivating flow. Set to great music from a mix of genres. This is definitely not just a music video. It deals with a lot of basic life issues, that are part of growing up and growing old. From the little miss perfect, who secretly pops pills to keep up. And is holding onto a teen fantasy of losing her virginity in romance novel style to her heart throb. The weird girl working through depression and thoughts of suicide. A wanna be thug and miserably bad shoplifter that just needs to belong to something. To the washed up old pop star that tries to pathetically hold onto his youth and career. And a wealth of other colorful characters, that are all trying to find themselves, and where they fit into the world. Empire is a great light hearted movie. It doesn't go overboard with drama, romance, or silliness. But it does have a little bit of all those things.
A Movie to Resist Time!!!.......2007-04-28
Fantastic movie that will last through the ages! I can watch this movie any time of the day or night over and over again, I have actually watched it probably about a hundred times. It never gets old and it's one of those movies that you can just put on just to have something to watch. I guess it is more directed at a younger group of people but it can last through the ages.

best ever.......2007-08-10
i wish more movies made today were like this. the PG ratings of today are not always what i would consider PG. this was as good for my grandkids and it was for my kids, ages ago.
Still a blockbuster ~ Family Time.......2007-07-13
I ordered this movie for my 12 year old daughter and she watches it twice a day. She is just as in love with this movie as I was as a child. It helps to bridge the gap between parent and child when we discuss the scenes in the movie. This is a must have for every family.
More then 5 stars !.......2007-03-20
The story of Et is a heartwarming story about an alien and a boy !
excellent storyline and great all around of a flim of science fiction !
Revisting my childhood in 1982 and APLUS of a movie , deserve as many as 100 stars over anyother sciene fiction movie and my Et idea came up after 9 years of release oringinal movie in 1982 ! Reuniting Et after 9 years in 1991 with Elliot and Et seeing each other after 10 years !
But flat idea to bring back ET still enjoy the movie after 24 years !

Patch Adams raises two schools of thought: There are those who are inspired by the true story of a troubled man who finds happiness in helping others--a man set on changing the world and who may well accomplish the task. And then there are those who feel manipulated by this feel-good story, who want to smack the young medical student every time he begins his silly antics.
Staving off suicidal thoughts, Hunter Adams commits himself into a psychiatric ward, where he not only garners the nickname "Patch," but learns the joy in helping others. To this end, he decides to go to medical school, where he clashes with the staid conventions of the establishment as he attempts to inject humor and humanity into his treatment of the patients ("We need to start treating the patient as well as the disease," he declares throughout the film). Robin Williams, in the title role, is as charming as ever, although someone should tell him to broaden his range--the ever-cheerful do-gooder à la Good Will Hunting and Dead Poets Society is getting a little old. His sidekick Truman (Daniel London) steals the show with his gawky allure and eyebrows that threaten to overtake his lean face--he seems more real, which is odd considering that Patch Adams does exist and this film is based on his life. Monica Potter is the coolly reluctant love interest, and she makes the most of her one-dimensional part. While moments of true heartfelt emotion do come through, the major flaw of this film is that the good guys are just so gosh-darn good and the bad ones are just big meanies with no character development. Patch Adams, though, does provide the tears, the giggles, and the kooky folks who will keep you smiling at the end. --Jenny Brown

Not-That-Sugary Look At A Sweet-Hearted Man.......2007-09-17
There are a lot of sugary clichés I could use - in a sincere way - to describe this story about a doctor with a good heart who truly believes in the healing power of laughter. Based on a real-life person (who looks a lot wackier than Robin Williams, who plays him in this movie), the story has its usual rebel fights-the- straight-laced-establishment cliché but is a warm, sentimental film that can't help but make you feel really good when it's all over. It's hardly all sugar, either, as there are not only frustrations but an immensely-shocking tragedy in here.
For a nice "family" movie, the profanity and sexual innuendos are a little much, so I don't think is one for the kids. (They wouldn't like it anyway.) Adults shouldn't mind. The language isn't that bad, anyway.
This is an inspiring story with comedy and romance and drama. That's what makes it so effective: a good combination of genres. One minute you're laughing, a few minutes later you have tears in your eyes.
A wonderful story, nicely acted and nicely told. Check out the bonus features. If you think Robin Williams is strange, wait until you see the real Patch Adams!.
Patch Adams.......2007-09-11
Just relax, seat back and enjoy the real life of Patch and learn to touch lifes.
Forget the critics, this one's mostly a winner..........2007-09-08
Positive or negative audience "hype" and critical praise or thumbs down have rarely had much of an effect on me. Audiences can often get it all wrong in my view, or all right, and so it goes as well for "professional" movie reviewers. Most of the latter got this one all wrong in blasting it as most have. To me however, while certainly with flaws, this movie aims straight for the heart, and gets things right more often than not. It is both a drama and a comedy, and while there are some rather jarring cuts between the two, in the end, this film's heart (and socio-political statement) is certainly in the right spot throughout. And more true today (unfortunately) than when it was first released or realized and lived out by the real life person upon which this is all based, "Patch Adams."
The fantastic opening scene and voice-over narrative by Robin Williams, accompanied by simple piano music (which swells to orchestral), introduces us to Patch (as he would later be called), a sad, depressed, self-pitying, aging young man on his way to nowhere, and to the "nut house" after a failed suicide attempt. He "self-admits" himself to a hospital psycho ward, after having tried almost every remedy and "prescription drug" (evidenced in his bathroom medicine chest), given him by the established medical "industry." What he finds there, and later, and what he discovers about himself and others, remains a searing indictment of that "industry" and what is and is not considered "normal." Institution-wise...
Those institutions are truly a daily, functioning contradiction. On the one hand, hospitals and doctors have as their guiding principle (or so they say), the noblest of goals. To treat people in need, to care for the sick and for those without the means to care for themselves, and to acknowledge that we are all basically just human beings living out our lives together in a "society" where the "Golden Rule" is actually the only one which matters. But who, if they've been run through the impersonal, profit-oriented HMO horror that is the state of today's "medical care," who, if they've ever spent any amount of time "in the hospital," or fighting with cold, impersonal "health insurance" agencies and agents and unreasonable costs, would agree with the notion that "altruistic" and "loving" personal care shouldn't play a large part in any truly civilized health care "system?"
Only but the most cold-hearted cynic about life and the sanctity of that, and those who consider the medical profession as just another "business," could deny that increasing the "personalizing" of the doctor-patient relationship, could do anything but positive things. Old habits and customs, old traditions and ways of thinking die hard however. Is and was the "philosophy" of Dr. Hunter "Patch" Adams really all that bizarre or unworkable? Or is and was it an attempt to just return to the "good old days" when a doctor would actually get his/her butt over to your house and tend to your sick child or you or a loved one, because they gave a damn? Or "take your call." Or fight against the medical corporate interests that inhibit the very practice and art of medicine and healing itself? Because it was (and should supposedly remain) their very oath to do so?
In an early part of the film, a psychiatrist who is supposed to be "helping" Patch and at the very least, "listening" to him, fiddles around with his coffee, avoids eye contact, and eventually doesn't even hear what Patch says. A bit later, Patch opts to dismiss himself from the institution, for the obvious reason that he's just not getting any true medical help there. The psychiatrist, ego puffed up, tells Patch that he disagrees with the early release, and that after all, "he" is the doctor. In a wonderful, fleeting, but finely powerful moment, Patch replies, "Yeah, but you suck at it." Patch says he thinks he can do better, and at a much later than normal age, applies to and is accepted into a prestigious medical school, and goes about proving that the personal touch is the most sound one a doctor can give to their patients. He does so with humor, and various more touching serious moments, but is fought every step along the way by the university and medical "establishment." Patch's attempts to fight along the way, and his romantic interests and encouragements, disappointments, and eventual realizations, make up the bulk of the film. And this real life story is nothing but an inspiration, especially to those who just know in their hearts that there is something dreadfully wrong with the American health care "industry, but that there just may be hope, if doctors were only to reach the awareness and enlightenment about the doctor-patient relationship that Patch did. As both a patient and a doctor.
While there are many missteps along the way, particularly in the often too-strident aspects of switching from drama to comedy, as well as turning from a personal story along the way into more of a broader, more philosophical and political denunciation of the university-trained and health-care "commerce" without needed cinematic transitional techniques, most of this works beautifully, and touchingly.
The film reminded me of many of my favorite movies of the past along the general "theme" celebrating the wisdom and morality of the common, caring individual caught up in a crazy world, including "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Next," "Forrest Gump," and "The Grapes of Wrath." While admittedly over the top and bordering on pretentious at times, "Patch Adams" remains one of my favorite films of all time, despite drawbacks. I think this movie should be required viewing for medical school students, who may not, like the critics, "get it." In addition, they should all have to watch it again and again until they do. And that goes for dental students/dentists as well.
A Golden Globe nominee for best picture in its time, and rightly so.
Robin Williams Shows He can Act! .......2007-06-04
The movie has a great story and message - then add to that the all-around acting talent of Robin Williams and you have got a great telling of true story. It is entertaining and inspiring!
I serve on a a board for a non-profit organization that is trying to help today's veterans with PTSD - and Patch Adams is also on that advisory board with me. He continues to care and continues to give service. The man is for real.
Patch Adams Review.......2007-03-23
Robin Williams is amazing in this role. We just don't realize his talent as an actor. I just loved the movie.

When the farmer's back is turned, the animals party down in Barnyard. A young cow named Otis (voiced by Kevin James, The King of Queens) loves to have fun at the farm's wild late-night hoe-downs, despite the disapproval of his father, Ben (Sam Elliott, Thank You for Smoking). When Ben dies defending the barnyard from marauding coyotes, Otis is chosen as the new leader--but responsibility sits uneasily on Otis' head and he fears he may not be able to protect his friends from the coyotes. Barnyard's design of the cows seems inspired by Gary Larson's The Far Side comics; though the style is simple, the characters are surprisingly expressive. From moment to moment, the movie is reasonably entertaining. The actors--including Courteney Cox, Danny Glover, and David Koechner (Anchorman) as a very menacing coyote--do solid voice work and there are plenty of amusing gags. But as Barnyard gallops towards its end, the combination of cliches (the story is a clumsy reworking of The Lion King), odd choices (the male cows have udders), and lackluster dialogue makes the movie sag. --Bret Fetzer
Description
Moo-ve over, all you pretenders
here are the original party animals - the critters of Barnyard! This laugh-filled, tuneful animated adventure stars Otis (voiced by Kevin James), a carefree party cow. To the consternation of his respected father Ben (voiced by Sam Elliott), Otis is happy to spend his days singing, dancing and playing tricks on humans. But all good things must come to an end, and when Otis is suddenly forced into his father's position of responsibility, the animal antics multiply as he struggles to find the courage and talent to be a true leader. Wild, wacky and "udderly" hilarious, here's a herd of animated pranksters that'll keep you laughing out loud!
Customer Reviews:
Most Entertaining Animated Film I Have Ever Seen .......2007-09-13
I cannot believe how funny, how entertaining this film was, even better than "Cars,' which is an outstanding animated movie. I give it a nod over "Cars" for two reasons: 1 - it's easier to watch being a half-hour shorter at 89 minutes, and 2 - it's even funnier.
This movie, especially in the beginning, provides almost nonstop laughs, the kind that adults would laugh at probably more than kids.. This is adult-funny, but don't misinterpret: there is nothing raunchy in the script. It's not totally innocent, either.
I do wave a "red flag" for small kids. There are a couple of scenes in here that are definitely too scary for little ones. I am referring to a pack of coyotes attacking "Ben," the father character seen early in the movie, and literally killing him. That, and the short funeral scene, are too intense for impressionable kids. Later, the coyotes return a few times, too. Those mothers who complained about their little kids seeing this have a legitimate point.
Nonetheless, for me - and I assume most other adults - the rest of this is pure entertainment, with a little sentiment mixed into the comedy as the main character, "Otis" (voiced by Kevin James) learns to grow up. Otis, however, is one of the funniest characters I have ever seen on film, animated or not. When he and his barnyard pals are partying it up, which is frequently, it's just hilarious. With those parties comes some great music, too. I found myself really into the music, more than on any animated film I have watched (or heard).
And - not only is the music excellent, the visuals are outstanding. The movie is filled with rich, deep colors that are stupendous to view.
Whether you are a teen or a senior citizen, I would think you would get a lot of laughs out of this movie. Some of the best animated films I have ever seen have come out in the past year or two, and I have to believe I'll probably watch this one more times than any of them.
Transgendered Silliness.......2007-09-09
When I saw a trailer for this film I thought I saw something that just could not be so I had to buy it. I was wrong. It was! On a peaceful farm, the animals are more than they seem. When people are asleep they get up on their hind legs, start talking, and generally run things while the humans are asleep. Sam Elliot voiced the father who is the head animal who keep everyone safe and makes sure the humans never learn the truth. Unfortunately his son just wants to party and have fun. Things are pretty good under his reign but what will happen when the son eventually takes over? Well that is just what this story is going to find out.
When the son finds himself in charge he still just wants to have fun and not be responsible. But dangers provided by local coyotes and snotty kids awaken a sense of justice which eventually transmutes into responsibility. But the road is not necessarily an easy one.
So what did I see? Well, Elliot and son (and the guys he hangs out with) are all large-uddered cows! Not bulls. Cows! Eventually two female cows show up in the story (you can tell by the bows on their heads). I loved the story. It was a great coming of age tale and real father/son tale. But the guys are cows and cows are females! In all of the commentaries and actor interviews, no one mentions that the guys in the story have girls bodies. Well, if you can get past this bit of odd biology (my kids know the difference between bulls and cows) then you will see a very good movie. Check it out and ignore the flapping udders.
DVD .......2007-08-14
Pretty funny show, I like the animated stuff thanks to the graphics and the realistic look the animators are able to create
VERY CLEVER and VERY FUNNY, Sometimes Poignant, Animated Film!.......2007-07-14
Are there some stupidly twisted things in this film? "You Bet!" Is it funny?? MORE "You Bets!"
This is ONE very clever, creative, and totally off the wall "farm film" that will have you on the floor...Trust Me! The levels of humor going on here are wonderful, it is too bad so many people apparently were/are unable to laugh (not only at the world and themselves) but at farm-life, both inside and outside of the barn!!!
It is too bad that people "bash" everything so easily. Yes, udders on a bull, what's wrong with that, for goodness' sake??? This is an ANIMATED film....supposed to be funny,...duh! This is NOT a Life Story, or a Sex Education Film, for Gods' sake...Grow UP, folks! I suppose the same narrow minded people also thought the lady next door with her makeup and curlers wasn't funny either...or the backwards drunkard...too close to home, maybe??? I suppose they did not think cow tipping was funny. And, of course (I forgot to mention) Talking Animals...OMG!
Too bad...they missed all the laughter, and also a WONDERFUL story inside it all, about trying to grow up and be morally responsible...isn't that sad? Check it out for YOURSELF, folks, I think you'll like it. ~operabruin
*PS...there is NOTHING offensive in this movie at all, btw, in case you're wondering.
Barnyard is great!.......2007-07-09

Walter Hill's revisionist take on the American cavalry's campaign to capture renegade Chiricahua Apache warrior Geronimo (Wes Studi) is, like Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven, a dark tale that both celebrates and critiques myths of the American West. Despite its title, Geronimo is really about the American cavalry officers who undertake the responsibility of recapturing the warrior, in particular the young narrator Lt. Charles Gatewood (Jason Patric), a Civil War hero who respects the great Geronimo and brokers a treaty with the Chiricahua, only to see it collapse when the army kills the tribal medicine man. Gene Hackman plays Gen. George Crook, the proud but sympathetic officer charged with bringing in the renegades who take to hills after the killing. Robert Duvall, the tough, racist army scout and Indian fighter Charlie Sieber, practically steals the picture with his cagey, underplayed performance. More complex and complicated than most Westerns, this is a Walter Hill film through and through: lean, ironic, beautiful to look at (it was shot on location against the astounding landscape of southeastern Utah), and driven by a wonderful Ry Cooder score. Don't confuse this with the 1993 TNT cable film by the same name; it confounded many viewers at the time of its release and may have been at least partially responsible for its box-office disappointment. --Sean Axmaker

From the moment that Matt Damon as 2nd Lt. Britton Davis commenced a narration of this sensitive and fascinating account of events relating to America's campaign against the Chiricahua-Apache and, in particular, Geronimo's role in that conflict, it became evident that this film possessed a rare and special quality. Indeed, I have never viewed a more compassionate and engaging rendering of the American western experience. For this I remain full of admiration for Walter Hill's eminently successful endeavor to portray the painful realities of US policy towards native Americans in the west with insight and fairness. The cast is marvelous - Jason Patric as 1st Lt. Charles B. Greenwood, Gene Hackman as General George Crook, Robert Duvall as Chief of Scouts, Al Sieber, and the compelling Cherokee actor Wes Studi playing Geronimo together with a strong supporting cast, all deliver memorable performances that seem perfectly suited to the fascinating lives they depict.
Geronimo was released just three years after Kevin Costner's Dances With Wolves (1990) an epic that brought a fresh and greatly needed interpretation of the western experience by examining the particulars of America's conquest of lands inhabited by the Lakota - the westernmost of three Sioux groups occupying lands in both North and South Dakota. Dances With Wolves is an excellent film, but to my mind, Geronimo stands as a superior work. Sadly as Geronimo was made for television in 1993, the film would be deprived it of Academy Award consideration. It should be remembered that John Houston's The Man Who Would Be King, also eluded acclaim during the Oscar ceremonies of 1975, then steadily secured a special niche reserved for greatness in the minds of legions of film goers. There is no higher honor that I can accord Geronimo than to compare it with The Man Who Would Be King.
In Geronimo, we are able to observe the fusion of a brilliant script by an exceedingly talented screenplay writer, John Milius, Hill's wonderful direction, the majestic cinematography of Lloyd Ahern, a beautiful musical score by Ry Cooder, and first rate performances from a stellar cast. It should be noted that all of this was achieved without the inclusion of a love story. The title might certainly have been improved. And there are historical inaccuracies in this film to be sure, indeed quite a few of them. Nonetheless, the film captures the historical essence of the subject in a masterly fashion. Here we have a stunningly well told epic possessing a timeless message that contains an eerie relevancy to the politics of our contemporary world.
An additional asset commending this film is the manner in which we are able to draw analogies between the stark and brutal nature of America's policies against the Apache in 1886 with the basic attitude and approach found today among numerous Washington-based policymakers. Insensitive, arrogant, often loutish proponents of "neo-con" philosophy today demonstrate a consistent inability or unwillingness to comprehend the nuances of other cultures. As in 1886, too many such people continue to exercise a determinant role in formulating Washington policies and have, through racist inclination or in the interest of corporate profit, brought about unnecessary and horrendous destruction worldwide. Lt. Charles B. Gatewood's character, expertly played by Jason Patric, possesses innate good sense and decisiveness. His daring, fluency with the Apache language, delicate feeling for the ways of the Chiricahua people and successful effort to persuade Geronimo to stand down, ended the desperate Chiricahua Apache warrior's struggle to maintain his freedom. Gatewood's talents and accomplishments are rewarded with punishment. Gatewood will
