Saw II brings back many features of the original Saw: elaborate sadistic scenarios designed to "test" the victims' will to live; Tobin Bell as the Machiavellian (yet doomed) serial killer Jigsaw; Shawnee Smith as Amanda, a survivor of one of Jigsaw's "games", forced to play again; Dina Meyer (Starship Troopers), whose role as a detective is considerably expanded; and the stunningly godawful dialogue of screenwriter Leigh Whannel. The set-up this time is even more preposterous than before, as a rough-and-tumble cop named Eric (Donnie Whalberg, Band of Brothers) watches, on video monitors, his son trapped in a house filled with nerve gas and a handful of other victims, all of whom are mysteriously connected. Eric has captured Jigsaw, but the implacable killer refuses to reveal where the cop's son is being held... unless Eric will play by Jigsaw's rules. Fans of Saw will love Saw II, as the tortures are more gruesome than before; viewers who found Saw either detestable or laughable won't like Saw II either, as the characters rarely behave like actual people (even when a moment's explanation would solve a conflict, no one bothers to communicate, even though their lives are on the line). It's a festival of body fluids, agonized grimaces, and shrieks of pain--and if that's your thing, this is your movie. --Bret Fetzer

3 out of 5 stars NOT AS SHARP AS THE FIRST SAW.......2007-08-31

I was a bit disappointed in this sequel to the blockbuster Saw. Don't get me wrong, it's better than the vast majority of movies in the horror genre, but I was not blown away by it as I expected, I figured out the twist early in the movie. Wahlberg is very good as is Tobin Bell, honestly, if you get even descent acting in movies like this, it needs to be appreciated, verdad? The ways Jigsaw comes up with to torture his victims is inspired is suppose, but i really didnt like the setting, it looked like a tacky stage set, I just kept thinking, wow the producers must make so much money of these films because they spend a buck fifty on the sets and all the no name, mostly very bad actors, I especially disliked the female cop, she was awful and the dumb Morequa that played the narcotics dealer, I mean where the F do they find these people?..overall, NOT as good as the first, but still recommended if you are into this sort of thing.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty decent.......2007-08-23

Though definetely not as good as the first, it still kept me on the edge of my seat, waiting to see the outcome. The acting was pretty OK. And I actually did like the ending, alot. Aside from a couple stupid moments, I thoroughly enjoyed watching it.

4 out of 5 stars Slightly worse than the first one, still a very good thriller.......2007-08-10

The weakest among the 3 entries so far. There are still a lot traps and is still enjoyable to see how gruesome they are, though not as good as those in the last movie. Still an important and must entry as the storyline is connected to both the last and the next episode.
If there is no comparison to the first or third part, this single movie will be a good one.
It is just the other 2 are soooo good.

4 out of 5 stars The Jig Is Not Up.......2007-07-19

Although the "Saw" series is billed as horror, it's more accurately described as torture porn with at least half a brain. There's very little in any of the movies that can be called scary, but there is a lot of screaming, a lot of blood, and a lot of clever deaths. Obviously there are folks who like that sort of thing, and who are willing to suspend a lot of disbelief in order to enjoy it.

The pale and pendulous Tobin Bell returns as Jigsaw for this second installment with a brand-new velvet cape and a much meatier role. He's still riddled with cancer, weaker than ever, but still capable of designing and building complex doomsday devices that appear inspired by equal parts Edward Gorey and Rube Goldberg. Also, the man seems to have some serious connections in both real estate (how many houses does this guy own?) and toxic gas.

Said gas is lethal but takes an hour to work its deadly magic (more or less). It is being pumped into a multiply booby-trapped house in which eight people are trapped, told via Jigsaw's ponderous voice that antidotes to the nerve agent can be found by enduring a series of tests. Meanwhile, Jigsaw plays a more personal game with a cop (Donnie Wahlberg), whose son, Daniel, is one of the prisoners in the Mansion O' Macabre.

Tobin shows enough restraint to make Jigsaw a sympathetically evil man, but the other actors don't fare quite as well. This is in keeping with the first film, which cared less about proper acting than it did about its harsh, flourescent stage. The people in the house scream and fight and utter silly dialogue. Donnie Wahlberg moans and emotes for his son. Jigsaw parcels out his trademark bon mots about life, and preciousness, and how much better water tastes when you're about to die.

I'm not going to test his theory. I suspect it might be true, but that's not really the point of the movie, no matter how much Jigsaw tries to cram it down our throats. The point is, obviously, the games that Jigsaw sets up. In that sense, this sequel is actually better than the original; it's no more or less frightening, but it is much smarter, and it moves with a well-oiled precision. The "Saw" movies, with their elaborate endgames and their gritty platitudes, will never really scare viewers, but they do give the prurient and the voyeuristic something raw and meaty to chew on. In a world where it's vastly more entertaining to watch someone lose than it is to watch them win, that means bad news for Jigsaw's victims, but good news for "Saw II."

5 out of 5 stars Everything you could've possibly hoped for..........2007-07-09

To be completely honest, I had VERY low expectations for Saw 2. I had watched the first film, and LOVED it. I loved how James Wan and Leigh Whannell were able to create such a creepy film with such a simple set. I loved the brilliant psychological warfare between two individuals who start out calm but grow angry with each other soon after. I loved the flashback sequences. Truth be told, I loved everything about it, and I was upset to then learn of three sequels (and probably a fourth) to such a classic horror film.

But anyway, since I had loved the first so much, one day I found myself at Blockbuster and decided to give the sequel a chance. I had nothing else to do. I could barely speak after watching it. I had just walked out of my home theater room with the memory of one of the best and most well-made sequels I've ever had the pleasure of watching.

"Saw 2," quite simply, is basically the first film on steroids. From the very first scene (which, by the way, was so revolting I had to set my giant movie theater butter popcorn bowl on the table next to me) Saw 2 will take your hands and lead you into a world of nightmare that you can't escape from until the end credits arrive on your screen 90 minutes later.

The story is simple to follow yet complex to dive into. Jigsaw locks eight people in a house full of traps, and they have two hours to find a way out before a lethal nerve gas flowing through the house kills them like the EBOLA virus. Meanwhile, Detective Matthews, a cop, apprehends Jigsaw with a team. And, it just so happens, one of the eight trapped in that house is Eric Matthews' son.

Saw 2 has everything the first film had and beyond. The gore is up there as a 9 or 10 on the gore scale, while I'd give the first film maybe a 7. Remember the psychological warfare that ensued between Adam and Lawrence in the first film? Well, it's magnified 100x in "Saw 2," between Jigsaw and Detective Matthews, and the eight unlucky individuals trapped inside the house. The acting is incredibly top-rate and soars past the first film in acting talent. Everyone in the cast does a GREAT job and makes the film seem that much more realistic. The direction and editing is superb (better than the first) and we now seriously know Leigh Whannell can seriously write a damn good movie, even though the screenplay for the first film was better. Apart from that, the only complaints I could have for "Saw 2" is that it isn't as creative or inventive as the first was, but who says it has to be? It's a sequel--it is merely carrying on the story where the first left off. The second complaint would be that it isn't scary...at all. It's just a brilliant suspense film that will have you cringe in disgust at the deliciously cleverly twisted film before your eyes. And for me, that's enough.

The twist at the end is also one of the biggest shockers I've ever witnessed watching a film. You think the one at the end of "Saw 1" is big? You ain't seen nothing yet. And go ahead--keep trying to guess the ending throughout watching "Saw 2." I guarantee you it'll go in the exact opposite direction of what you're thinking of.

Overall--do what your love for the first film tells you to do. See "Saw 2," disregard your thoughts of how a sequel could never be as great as the first, sit down, and put this movie on. You won't be disappointed! My only worry now is the third film possibly living up to the caliber of the first two. Leigh Whannell and James Wan prove that "Saw" is not one horror film saga for recent years, it's one for the century.

Anchor Bay gives Just Jaeckin's legendary 1974 erotic drama Emmanuelle an appropriately sumptuous DVD presentation, featuring uncut prints of the original and its two official sequels, 1975's Emmanuelle 2 and 1977's Goodbye Emmanuelle, in a three-disc set. All three films, which star Sylvia Kristel in the title role, are handsomely mounted adults-only fare, and their lush photography, exotic locations, and arousing (but not explicit) bedroom couplings not only helped to change softcore features, but also offered an alternative to XXX for mainstream audiences.

Based on a memoir by the wife of a delegate to Thailand, Emmanuelle focuses on the sexual awakening of a naive French diplomat's spouse at the hands of an experienced older man (Alain Cuny). First-time director Jaeckin and producer Yves Rousset-Rouard eschewed going the pornographic route with the story, and instead concentrated on the natural beauty of the Thailand setting and their star, 20-year-old Dutch model Kristel. The film was a runaway success in Europe and America, where it was successfully promoted as an erotic film devoid of porn's misogynistic tendencies. In addition to its box-office impact, Emmanuelle encouraged other softcore filmmakers to showcase travelogue-style locations and less sniggering storylines.

Emmanuelle's success naturally precipitated sequels, and two more adventures followed: Emmanuelle 2 (subtitled The Joys of a Woman in the States), which moved the action to Hong Kong; and Goodbye Emmanuelle, which sent the libertine to the Seychelles in search of a meaningful relationship. Respective directors Francis Giacobetti and Francois Leterrier's efforts were appropriately spicy, but Rousset-Rouard wisely decided to quit while he was ahead after the third picture. The series' worldwide appeal prompted a string of cheap and strange ripoffs, many featuring Indonesian actress Laura Gemser, who appears in Emmanuelle 2. But for cult movie fans, Anchor Bay's set offers the real Emmanuelle in all of her undraped glory. --Paul Gaita

5 out of 5 stars The best character approach for an adult series.......2007-05-26

Of these films only the first is known as being a benchmark in erotic cinema and although none of the films are good all around there are things to enjoy about all of them. I find all of them beautifully photographed and locations, but the first one has the best storyline and I think that's why it's remembered so fondly. With that being said it's also too mild for my taste, but I can definitely appreciate it.

The second Emmanuelle film is the one you should truly get to see has how erotic things can get. It doesn't have the story that you might feel is essential because it's all about Emmanuelle and her husband doing whatever pleases them sexually, so it's all about the detour and as such it has a lot of sexy scenes that are unconnected to plot, so it's good for people who like to skip around in scenes, but the this movie is the best shot film of the series without a doubt. It's beautiful from head to toe. I think this is probably more erotic than stuff that's around nowadays, I'm not sure, I'm not a connosieur of the genre, but it seems the new stuff is made on a factory line, and this has some semblance of artistic merit, even if it's not essentially dramatic.

The last film is the worst for a few important reasons. 1)the producers had to kill it, since they realized there was no future in making these movies with success being controlled by political climate so they ended in the most conservative way possible, they took the fun out the sex, the beauty out of the nudity, the gauziness out of the visuals, and the Emmanuelle out of the story. It doesn't work in comparison to the other movies because it's specifically about Emmanuelle's gradual dislike of sex simply for pleasure and has her fall in love with some guy, who the movie isn't interested in. While life changes are inevitable, this series brings with it a certain expectation and the love scenes are a bore, not erotic, or even mildly titillating. Worst of all, the man who plans Jean is given the worst task of trying to seem like a jerk and do nothing else. Yes, it's the most dramatically stagnant movie in the series, but the movie boringly moves along a crucial plot point that brought the end to the series. I just wish they would've only made two and not even done a third. This movie is a funeral.

As for the extras, the featurettes are wonderful and gradually get shorter as time goes along. I wish the second one would've been longer, but you can't always get what you want.

2 out of 5 stars How much is too much!.......2007-01-06

I never tire of the original, yet this collection was tiring.

1 out of 5 stars Emmanuelle Collection is totally cut!.......2006-09-20

I recently bought the "Emmanuelle Collection" for nearly $100 and what a disappointment! According to the totally false advertising in the "Editorial reviews" these movies are presented complete and uncut. This is so not true. All three movies are cut, but Emmanuelle 2, the Joys of a Woman, generally regarded as the best of the series, is literally butchered! Everything from the keyhole anime sequence to the incredibly beautiful bathouse sequence is cut to shreds. In particular, the bathhouse scene, a masterpiece of gentle sensuality, is completely obliterated in this butcher's cut. Generally speaking, most of the eroticism in all three famous erotic films (and I love these films, and saw them uncut in the theater, and own Emmanuelle 2 uncut on laser disc) has been destroyed by someone who cut the films (and someone who particularly hates sensual scenes of women together). These films are valueless, as their essential appeal as erotic viewing is gone. This is a total ripoff and the claim of being uncut is a total lie, as I can prove to anyone who wants to fire up my laser player, or who has any kind of memory of how beautiful these films used to be before someone took big scissors to them. Don't buy!!

5 out of 5 stars Emmanuelle : Collection en français.......2005-01-09

5 out of 5 stars The original Emmanuelle, and the best.......2004-08-24

This boxed set presents the three original Emmanuelle movies, the ones starring Sylvia Kristel. There were lots of imitators, most ranging from bad to worse and beyond. At the time of the first Emmanuelle, though none of that had yet happened - please hold that happy thought. Perhaps these three aren't high art, but they're generally good entertainment for adults. They are also so different from each other that they deserve to be reviewed individually, not as a lump.

* Emmanuelle: Back in the 70s, this was a groundbreaking movie. It was openly erotic, and openly meant for the general public. I'll leave the social commentary to others. For me, it's just a beautiful movie. It's set in beautiful tropical locations. It stars beautiful actresses, back before implants were part of the uniform. Most of all, it shows beautiful (if artificial) exchanges of physical affection between Emmanuelle and just about everyone, man and woman.

Still, there were a few things about this movie that I didn't care for. It usually depicts Emmanuelle as a passive figure, to be led and acted upon. I prefer the stronger character in the sequel. Later parts of the movie depict coercion, something I really don't care for. The haughty poseur at the end was annoying, but distantly true to the book. Still, book fans shouldn't get their hopes up. This movie is its own creature, and pleasant enough if taken on its own terms.

* Emmanuelle 2: The best of the bunch, I think. This is a warmly sensuous film. This might even be the one to use for introducing a shy viewer to movies about physical happiness. Emmanuelle is fully her own woman - every scene lies well within her consent and enjoyment. A new character, Anna Maria, is a sweet, innocent young thing. Emmanuelle, of course, broaches that innocence in an elegantly filmed sequence of encounters. A few scenes, like the infamous "Jade Club", come across as crude, but only when meant to. Still, they don't seem threatening. That's another aspect of this film that I like better than the first.

It's too much to say that this movie has a plot, but it does have a story line of sorts. The movie is really just about happy eroticism, though, the kind that relies more on your imagination than on actual imagery. It's sort of like a musical where I come out humming the tunes even if I can't remember the words. Couples might like this movie, even bashful couples, and might like playing along with the actors on screen.

* Goodbye Emmanuelle: This is the third and last of Kristel's Emmanuelle movies, but don't hold her responsible. The backer had run into censorship problems with the second movie, and wanted to make sure that didn't happen again. The result is a disappointing attempt at being serious. It completely lacks the warm mood and physicality of the two earlier efforts. Even the background music has a very different style, one that I found far less successful in framing the visuals and dialog.

It tries to show Emmanuelle and husband Jean growing into a more stable, monogamous relationship. Instead, it just descends into petty jealousies and possessiveness. Jean, especially, pulls tricks that would have seemed silly even in high school. Perhaps the movie meant to show swelling affection and bruised feelings. Instead, it just showed swollen egos and bruised pride.

As it happens, Jigsaw is eager to beput behind bars in order to throw the authoritiesoff his trail as he once again punishes people who in his eyes have transgressed the boundaries of acceptable moral behavior. 5 out of 5 stars move over resident evil.......2007-05-07

For those of you that grew up watching the classic zoombie movies such as night of the living dead this movie is for you. A millitary team must neutralize a school zone and collect a blood sample from a Zombie after and outbreak. This the second movie in the house of the dead series. If you like this I also recommend the Resenent evil movie. This movie should be fine for kids ages 17 up do to heavy gore language and other inappropriate content. Can the millitary send these zombie back to the depths of hades find out in the thrilling conclusion.

3 out of 5 stars I enjoyed it..........2007-04-21

I don't think that it even bares mentioning that this is a step up from Uwe Boll's fantastic turd fest that was the original House of the Dead. If you're a fan of zombie movies, then this sequel is definitely up your ally, its tongue-in-cheek humor and silliness combined with a few points of genuine originality make for a fun view.

3 out of 5 stars It's okay.......2007-04-08

A professor tries to bring back the dead and accidentally creates a zombie virus that threatens the whole world. A secret government agency is sent to save the day. The zombies were okay, but the dialoque at times was ridiculous. All the male characters acted the same, and were hard to tell apart. It's really a 1 star movie, I only gave it 3 stars because I think Emauelle Vagier is a beautiful woman with a distinct gravely voice and she could be a big star if she got better parts. Still, if you are a zombie fan check this movie out on a slow night.

3 out of 5 stars IMPROVEMENT OVER THE FIRST, ONLY JUST.......2007-03-07

Im a huge fan of zombie movies, but I have a few criticisms of the two House of the Dead movies.

I dont know where they were going with the first movie because they just rushed it. There's no connection whatsoever between the movie and the three House of the Dead video games, maybe that wasnt their intention so I really didnt like the first one.

The second one also had no association with the video games but the style of the movie did resemble what we play in the arcades. There were a number of flaws in the movie but the biggest one that I thought was ridiculous was if humans are vunerable to infection by a zombie through bite or scratch, what about contact to zombie blood. I do give points for the gore, but when they're covered in zombie blood wouldnt they eventually become infected anyway?. Just doesnt make sense.

2 out of 5 stars Not a total waste of time.......2007-01-01

But that's about as far as I'd go. Decent production values, competent zombie attacks. I saw it on the Sci-Fi Channel, and it was better than most of the CG garbage movies they show. But if I had the money, I'd go to the arcade and play the video game, not buy this.

Along the way, she will surrender to the forbidden desires of a women's dormitory, the illicit ecstasy of interracial passion, the shocking rapture of a bordello orgy and beyond. But the most delectable pleasures are still to come, including the infamous bathhouse masseuse sequence (featuring the legendary Laura Gemser) and Emmanuelle's daring seduction of a friend's shy young daughter into the delights of a ménage á trois! Umberto Orsini co-stars in this acclaimed worldwide hit - known in America as EMMANUELLE: THE JOYS OF A WOMAN - that fans and critics have called the most stylishly elegant and relentlessly erotic film in the series that changed sexy cinema forever.

5 out of 5 stars Seductive and lush visuals for a delightful adventure.......2007-08-11

What makes this film a visual sensual delight is that it has some of the best glamor/beauty cinematography ever committed to film. You can watch this with your lover and it'll start the sparks flying.

It's definitely the best of the films, and the most closely in tone with the literary source material.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best official "Emmanuelle" films!.......2007-06-18

Following the hugely successful first Emmanuelle came this lushly photographed classic sequel, perhaps even surpassing the original. What it has in common with the first Emmanuelle: wonderful score, beautiful locations, and the lovely Sylvia Kristel. These are intelligent films with a sense of humour, much in the spirit of the novels the films are based on.

Those looking for hardcore thrills will be let down, this is strictly R rated fare by todays standards... but if you are looking for a beautiful world of fantasy and desire, this is the film for you.

Product Description

Product Description

Emmanuelle is a beautiful young model and lives in Bangkok together with her husband Jean, who's several years older. She likes him because he's taught her much, and he likes her because she's learning so well - and wants to often. Both are very tolerant in matters of extramarital affairs, so he doesn't mind the young Marie-Ange coming over every so often, although she obviously wants more than talk from his wife. But Emmanuelle is more fascinated by the older Bee, and joins her on a trip into the jungle.

3 out of 5 stars MI 1 & 2.......2007-02-12

MI 1 has a story line that hangs together. It is a little fantastic, but that's what Mission Impossible is, so some stretching of likelihood doesn't bother the viewer. This movie is entertainment, pure and simple. It does not pretend to be other than that.

MI 2 is a different kind of movie. A bit fantastic too, but you expect a little fantasy; so it does not disturb you. The cinematography here is much better than that of its predecessor. The use of light and shaddow is quite artistic. The story is good until near the end where the production deteriorates into preposterous chase scenes that go on and on and on and on. Those are followed by an even more preposterous fight scene that never seems to end; the hero and villain never seem to tire from the exertion, and do not deteriorate from the dastardly blows they rain back and forth upon each other. A lttle fantasy is expected, but the chase scenes and the fight grow immensely tiresome and unreal and ruin the movie. The movie ends like an overdone steak.

Everthing about the shipment was perfect. I received it on time, it was in excellent condition, I couldn't have asked for better from a vendor!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Nice set of two solid thrillers .......2006-05-07

Beyond the basic concept the "Mission: Impossible" films have little to do with the original TV series. In fact this is a recreation for an audience brought up on high octane action films. De Palma's film reinvents the popular TV franchise although many long time fans were probably upset that Jim Phelps was played by Jon Voight and that he's killed in the first 15 minutes of the film. Ethan Hunt (Cruise) is accused by his own agency of engineering the death of his IMF team to protect his identity as a traitor. Hunt suddenly alone must assemble a team (Ving Rhames, Jean Reno)of his own to help clear his name.

The updated transfer looks marvelous here with richer, bolder colors and an anamorphic high definition transfer that improves on the previous DVD. This also features some decent extras although they have less to do with the history of the show and translating it to the big screen than with Cruise and Brian De Palma's attempt to update it for a new audience. There's also a preview for MI3 included as well as a ticket for free theater admission to MI3 until 5/14/06.

"MI2" plays much more like a cross between a Bond film and a Hong Kong action movie. That's good in a way because it's every bit as different from the first as the third is from the second. Director John Woo keeps "MI2" a fresh adventure. This time Ethan Hunt is directed by his boss (Anthony Hopkins in a nice cameo)to discover who stole the dangerous Chimera virus and its antidote. This nasty virus is 100% lethal and if the cure isn't given within a certain time frame it's worthless. Hunt discovers and tracks down a disgruntled IMF member (Doug Ray Scott who was originally to play Wolverine in "X-Men" until he was injured on this film)but the clock is ticking as Chimera may fall into the wrong hands.

This edition is the same as the first with the exception of the second disc which has some promos for the third installment as well as some featurettes not included on the previous single disc edition. The transfer and extras on the first discs is the same though.

If you don't own either film this is a worthwhile set to get but if you own the second film already I would purchase the first remastered edition separately. Both films are entertaining and have top notch supporting cast, direction and writing. The script for the first film was rewritten by Cruise's buddy legendary screenwriter Robert Town ("Chinatowne")as was the second film although it's based on a story by Ron Moore and Brannon Braga ("Star Trek: First Contact").
