What a surprise!.......2007-06-27

I'm not sure what motivated me to order this---except that I find the work of each director interesting, and the price is sure right. When I order a public domain cheapie I'm prepared for poor prints, noisy audio, etc. But I was absolutely knocked out by the print quality and transfers on BOTH of these movies. The Superscope "Burma" is even enhanced for widescreen. The color was mostly good on both movies, and I didn't notice any significant film damage or dirt. The movies are OK, interesting primarily because of the casts. Both leading ladies were a bit long in the tooth for their roles, but they still show their star quality.

VCI gets a gold star for a release that looks like WHV did it from the original elements. The artwork is enough to scare anyone away, however.

And I really wish that they wouldn't have one of their people write Amazon reviews for their product.

If you want a couple of pretty good Saturday afternoon flicks very well presented, you just can't go wrong.

This DVD presents two RKO jungle movies produced by Benedict Bogeaus in color.
Appointment in Honduras, 1953, 79 min., with Glen Ford and Ann Sheridan. Directed by Jacques Tourneur.
Glenn Ford forces a sea captain to drop him off the Honduras Coast with a bunch of prisoners, and taking Ann Sheridan and her husband along as hostages. Jungle movies tend to be somewhat alike in that as they struggle through the jungle, you get to know what people are really like. This is no exception, but you will have to wait to last minute to find out what makes Glenn Ford's character tick.

Escape to Burma, 1955, 88 min., with Barbara Stanwick and Robert Ryan. Directed by Allan Dwann.
Robert Ryan is an adventurer suspected of murder who seeks refuge in Barbara Stanwick's tea plantation. As she is as indomitable and lonely as a woman can be, she is soon fighting the world to keep him, but is he worth the trouble?

The DVD features the actors and directors' bios plus three different trailers of RKO movies.

First imagine, a man coming up to your place of employment and stating, "(fill in your name here), I have a message for you. It's from the Lord. In eight days, on September 19th at 6:05 P.M. YOU ARE GOING TO DIE!" What would you do? Would you think it's a hoax? Or would you go along with life as if you never heard it?

Although this DVD is pretty short 39 minutes, I found it to be an excellent evangelistic tool. There's nothing scary about it at all. Just realistic!

The woman that the angel appeared to told her that she was privy to informaton or revelation that others don't normally receive. Death is certain and no one knows when their time will come. He also told her that the answers were found in the Bible. Did she read the Bible for the answers or did she continue to ignore his warnings?

I cannot say that the angel's warning was far-fetched at all. Many patriochs in the Bible knew that they had finished their course and prepared their households or blessed their successors to continue where they left off.

My son and I enjoyed this one.

Courtney is a stunningly beautiful young blonde woman with an outstanding figure who never gives in to her bondage - this tape is a must for all serious collectors!

This is a specialized DVD, for an audience who is interested in bondage content. This DVD should only be purchased by adults.

TALES OF TOMORROW was an early science fiction TV show. The eighty-four 30 minute episodes of this series that aired on ABC-TV featured both current and future stars.

"Frankenstein" is a pared-down rendering of the classic Mary Shelley novel with Lon Chaney Jr. as the ill-fated monster. "The Crystal Egg" is based on an H.G. Wells story. Character actor Thomas Mitchell (STAGECOACH and IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE) has a supporting role here. "Appointment on Mars" shows Leslie Nielson at the beginning of his long career. In 1956, Nielson would star in the sci-fi classic, FORBIDDEN PLANET.

This DVD is a fine introduction to the Tales of Tomorrow series. For a larger selection of episodes, recommended is TALES OF TOMORROW COLLECTION ONE.

Good representation of early attempts.......2004-06-14

This 3 episode DVD gives a good idea of what science-fiction and fantasy film-makers were doing for television in the early 1950's. The acting is somewhat stiff, and the sets/props must have been left from other shows, but you can see the style and ideas come through. Look for Leslie Nielson in a "serious" role as the commander of a commercial mission to Mars. For the serious fan/collector, this is a good addition, but not necessarily a good buy for an average viewer.

His fall with Homer Simpson does not come up........2007-07-16

I thought the gushiness of this work may have been a practice of the cliche "Do not speak ill of the dead." However, this work seems to have been released before the President's passing. His accomplishment as the longest living president does not come up. Yes, the work admits that Ford was not Nixon's top choice for vice-president. However, the work applauds Ford as head of a football team and a Yale Law alumnus, thus causing surprise to the viewer to learn that some thought of him as a light-weight, in a Dan Quayle fashion.

Bill Clinton spoke in a documentary about FDR, so I wasn't surprised to see Cheney and Bush the Father provide interviews for this work. However, the work crosses party lines when Michigan's Governor Granholm praised Ford and Ford's daughter comes out as a Democrat.

Alexander Hamilton may have revealed too much to the press and FDR may have had a defensive relationship with them. This work seemed to say Ford's dynamic was in-between, a sign of honesty and "civility." The work does not look at his presidency in a vacuum. It questions whether Ford's pardon of Nixon sealed his fate and whether the country would have thrived better if Ford had won the campaign against Carter.

I'm a staunch Democrat who is proud to live in Blue America. This work did not make me want to switch parties or residences. However, I'm learning how Ford was the president when I was born and for lack of a better term, this is making me "nostalgic." I had a positive experience in learning more about this former head of state.
