Though Inland Empire's three hours of befuddling abstraction could try the patience of the most devoted David Lynch fan, its aim to reinvigorate the Lynch-ian symbolic order is ambitious, not to mention visually arresting. The director's archetypes recognizable from previous movies once again construct the film's inherent logic, but with a new twist. Sets vibrate between the contemporary and a 1950s alternate universe crammed with dim lamps, long hallways, mysterious doors, sparsely furnished rooms and, this time, a vortex/apartment/sitcom set where rabbit-masked humans dwell, and a Polish town where women are abused and killed. Instead of speaking backwards, mystic soothsayers and criminals speak Polish. Filmed on video, the film's look has the sinister, frightening feel of a Mark Savage film or a bootlegged snuff movie. Constant close-ups, both in and out of focus, make Inland Empire feel as if a stalker covertly filmed it. A straightforward, hokey plot unravels during the first third of Inland Empire to ground the viewer before a dive off the deep end. Actor Nikki Grace (Laura Dern) is cast as Susan Blue, an adulterous white trash Southerner, in a film that mimics too closely her actual life with an overbearingly jealous and dangerous husband. When Nikki and co-star Devon (Justin Theroux) learn that the cursed film project was earlier abandoned when its stars were murdered, the pair lose their grasp of reality. Nikki suffers a schizophrenic identity switch to Sue that lasts until nearly the film's end. Suspense builds as Nikki's alter ego sleuths her way through surreal situations to discover her killer, culminating in Sue's gnarly death on set. Sue's actions drag on because any sign of a narrative thread disappears due to idiosyncratic editing. Non-sensical scenes still captivate, however, such as when Sue stumbles onto the soundstage where she finds Nikki (herself) rehearsing for Sue's part. In this meta-film about identity slippage, Dern's multiple characters remind one of how a victim can become the hunter in their fight for survival. Lynch's portrayal of Nikki/Sue's increasing paranoia is, in its own confusion, utterly realistic. Laura Dern has created her own Lady Macbeth, undone by her guilt over infidelity. Even though Inland Empire is too long and too random, Laura Dern's performance coupled with Lynch's video experiments make it magical. --Trinie Dalton

Customer Reviews:
Indeed.......2007-09-14
This film certainly won't please everyone. That said, I found it absolutely mesmerizing, from the first blurry, subtitled exchange to the whacked out dance party during the credits. I think INLAND EMPIRE is a display of David Lynch's creativity given completely free rein, and the result is a devastating portrait of fame and image, intimacy and isolation. Admittedly, it is also very abstract and its logic is twisted to the point of contradiction at times. Seeing it in the theater, I saw an amusingly high percentage of the audience get up and leave in apparent disgust over the course of the three-hour running time.
Beware the nay-sayers (and the fanboys, too), and judge this one for yourself. Even if you don't dig the overall presentation, the scene-by-scene writing is fantastic and entertaining, and Laura Dern's performance is worth three hours of your time on its own.
Another Great Lynch Movie.......2007-09-13
Up until about 2 years ago - I had never even heard of David Lynch. A co-worker told me about Eraserhead and after watching that movie, I was hooked. No matter what Lynch movie I watch, I know I am in for a twisted, brain warped, multi dementional adventure. The special features on this DVD are just as odd as the movie itself. Can't wait to see what he comes up w/next!
Bizarre.......2007-09-13
David Lynch has always had a flare for the bizarre, but this movie is over the top. For hard core David Lynch fans, this movie is a must - for others, it's not critical to have in your library.
No "There" There.......2007-09-13
I love David Lynch movies, and I'm a very patient movie watcher. I don't have to understand a film to enjoy it, and figured out long ago the best way to enjoy a David Lynch film-- savor the creepy atmosphere, dark humor, and great set pieces. Unfortunately with Inland Empire, this time around, there's just no "there" there. When I saw Inland Empire in a theater, I was ready to leave after an hour and a half but toughed it out to completion because I knew I would never make it that far again. Intellectualize it all you want, make all the excuses you need, work up a rationale that makes you feel better about it, but this is just three hours of David playing with a digital camera. Nothing interesting happens, there are very few if any of those great Lynchian moments to savor as in his other films, and the actors seem to be pretty much as baffled as we are as to their motivations and actions. Kudos to Laura Dern for giving it a great effort. Here's hoping the next film is less self-indulgent and more fulfilling. I'm giving it two stars only because I can't bear to give anything less to one of the greatest filmmakers of our time.
Lynch at his best. Bizarre and Beautiful.......2007-09-13
At three hours long, the wait is over. Lynch at his best. It was worth the wait. True lynch fans will enjoy this mind-bend. Watch it again and again and more is revealed. the soundtrack is great with lynch vocals on one of the tracks. Laura Dern and Cast give amazing performance's
Trust and Enjoy the ride.

Great Movie, Great Quality.......2007-09-14
Having been a huge fan of this movie since I first saw it on DVD I was delighted to get a chance to see it in HiDef Blu-ray. I had read an earlier release of The Fifth Element on Blu-ray was lackluster at best, not having seen it myself I can't personally comment. However, this Remastered release on Blu-ray is incredible. The action is certainly not missing in this Bruce Willis flick, but just as much there's the comedy. Chris Tucker plays his character (Ruby Rhod) spot-on. Luc Besson does a phenomenal job putting so many "elements" together in this movie. This movie is not one-dimensional like most Action or Comedy movies. Well worth the time and money.
Excelente!!!.......2007-09-13
Qualidade de imagem e áudio espetaculares! Realmente um Blu-ray autêntico e remasterizado, conduzindo à melhor alta definição disponível no mercado. Parabéns à Sony pela correção do re-lançamento desta versão!
Total let-down.......2007-09-10
The video quality is horrible. The Super Bit release on standard DVD was superior. Sad, as it is one of my favorite movies for picture quality and testing out a new system.
Splendid film, highly recommend.......2007-09-10
Uncompressed audio track is clear, dynamic and and natural. Picture is not the best I've seen in Blu-ray but good nonetheless. The movie is of course one of the best scifi movies ever made. Humor is cracking, main characters deep and the traditional story of all triumphant love is well put out.
WOW.......2007-08-23
They really did work on it! All i can say is AMAZING!!! Love the movie!

The third season of the popular shonen (boy's) show Dragon Ball Z continues the adventures of Goku and Gohan on Namek, Piccolo's home planet. Goku, who has been in a regeneration tank since the end of season 2, recovers just in time to challenge the sniggering Frieza, one of the most grating villains in anime history. Having defeated Gohan, Krillin, Vegeta, and Piccolo, Frieza takes on Goku in a protracted duel. When he begins to doubt his ability to overcome Goku, Frieza destroys the core of Namek, ensuring it will explode in a matter of minutes. Enraged by the death of Krillin and so many others, Goku transforms into the one thing Frieza fears: a Super Saiyan, a legendary warrior who appears once every 1,000 years. As the seconds tick away, the two most powerful individuals in the universe duke it out. While they're beating the soba out of each other, King Kai hatches a plan to use the Dragon Balls of Earth and Namek to ensure a happy ending. As the battle between Goku and Frieza intensifies, the kicks and punches fly, producing titanic explosions. But the duel goes on for more than 20 episodes: With only a limited budget and crude special-effects techniques at their disposal, the filmmakers have to recycle footage endlessly. Dragon Ball Z: Season 3 is more entertaining when the viewer allows a few days to elapse between episodes, rather than indulging in a Super Saiyan marathon. (Rated TV PG. suitable for ages 8 and older: violence, brief nudity, tobacco use, ethnic stereotypes) --Charles Solomon

shut up you cry babies.......2007-09-15
Oh my God, what is up with all these people that are crying about how they cropped the picture in the new boxed sets. I mean, have you ever tried buying the series in the individual dvds with the starter boxes. I spent tons of money doing it. Now that they have these cheap, un-cut versions out, who cares if I don't see one inch of krillins bald head. Most of the action that occurs on DBZ happens horizontally so the top and bottom little section that was removed isn't all that missed. In fact, I didn't even notice it until I started reading reviews.
I also want to know, what nerdy, no-sex having, english speaking person wastes thier time watching the show in japanese with english subtitles just to see if the voice overs are precise and accurate. They aren't 100% accurate because if they said everything word for word with the litteral translation, the mouths wouldn't match up, you would get board hearing five thousand words that aren't needed. They do a translation that is accurate enough to keep the story the same yet palitable for the viewers so that it is a smooth, easy to watch movie.
Needless to say, the high-def remastering is awsome, the picture has never looked better, especially on a high-def tv. I have loved this series ever since dragon ball. Thank God that it is being released this way because, with tv being high-def and the demand for cheaper prices, who could ask for anything more?!
loved it .......2007-09-10
The cartoon was excellent. i truly liked the graphics and cannot wait till the other series comes out.
Finally.......2007-09-09
Finally there is a cheap way for fans to buy DBZ. I remember watching DBZ as a kid on cartoon network. I have been looking since then for a way to get all of the episodes on DVD. They have finally arrived.
I don't care what anyone says by way of criticism about these box sets. If you are a true fan of DBZ, then you will love these sets.
DBZ for Me.......2007-09-08
I am glad that they are releasing Dragon Ball Z as seasons because I was one of those guy's that was buying the tapes when funimation was releasing them for 18-22 dollars a pop for 3 to 5 episodes. These dvd's are the best thing they thought of. GOOD JOB
Fahk yeah!.......2007-09-04
I love this chunk of the show, what with krillin riding a horn through his guts like a rodeo bull and eventually (many episodes later) popping like a grape as piccolo get his chest swiss cheesed by a finger beam. Oh yeah. It's that kinda program. And now its available cheap but cropped. Im used to it now, and having it in perfect japanese format is worth it. I will have episodes 13 of original dragon ball (why they havent gotten through to kidmark and bought back the rights to those first twelve episodes, we may never know) through the end of the show in uncut bliss after I buy this and the android/trunks set. That accounts for almost ten years of collecting tapes and later dubtitled first copy dvds and then when funimation got its 5h1t together and decided to do it right, they split up the cell dvds and skipped to boo. I waited through 2002/2004 and then they finished cell, and then GT, then finally the movies over the past couple of years and milked this cow dry. Now with the redos, they are sorta making up for it, but the widescreen thing was of course sand in our faces, and we may buy the definitive boxed set on blue ray or some other funky format in the future that is considered by hardcores as perfectly perfect. So what. If that thing is like 30 bucks a pop, I may pick that one up too.

Filmmaker Robert Zemeckis topped his breakaway hit Romancing the Stone with Back to the Future, a joyous comedy with a dazzling hook: what would it be like to meet your parents in their youth? Billed as a special-effects comedy, the imaginative film (the top box-office smash of 1985) has staying power because of the heart behind Zemeckis and Bob Gale's script. High schooler Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox, during the height of his TV success) is catapulted back to the '50s where he sees his parents in their teens, and accidentally changes the history of how Mom and Dad met. Filled with the humorous ideology of the '50s, filtered through the knowledge of the '80s (actor Ronald Reagan is president, ha!), the film comes off as a Twilight Zone episode written by Preston Sturges. Filled with memorable effects and two wonderfully off-key, perfectly cast performances: Christopher Lloyd as the crazy scientist who builds the time machine (a DeLorean luxury car) and Crispin Glover as Marty's geeky dad. --Doug Thomas
Critics and audiences didn't seem too happy with Back to the Future, Part II, the inventive, perhaps too clever sequel. Director Zemeckis and cast bent over backwards to add layers of time-travel complication, and while it surely exercises the brain it isn't necessarily funny in the same way that its predecessor was. It's well worth a visit, though, just to appreciate the imagination that went into it, particularly in a finale that has Marty watching his own actions from the first film. --Tom Keogh
Shot back-to-back with the second chapter in the trilogy, Back to the Future, Part III is less hectic than that film and has the same sweet spirit of the first, albeit in a whole new setting. This time, Marty ends up in the Old West of 1885, trying to prevent the death of mad scientist Christopher Lloyd at the hands of gunman Buford "Mad Dog" Tannen (Thomas F. Wilson, who had a recurring role as the bully Biff). Director Zemeckis successfully blends exciting special effects with the traditions of a Western and comes up with something original and fun. --Tom Keogh

A very nice Package of Back to the Future Trilogy.......2007-09-10
I am very satisfied with my purchase of this trilogy. It has hours and hours of behind the scenes and bloopers and How they made the movies, which is very interesting. The movies come nicely packaged in a very nice dvd holder that opens like a book. Someday I expect that these movies will be known as Classics. Amazon had the cheapest price of the Trilogy of any store or online store I shopped at. An all around great value for sure.
Great Movie, but more bad language than I remembered!.......2007-09-10
I bought this three movie package because my girls (6 and 8) were singing the Jonas Bros. song Year 3000, which mentions this movie. I remember loving this movie when I was a teen! However, I did NOT remember how many cuss words where used in this movie, so beware if you are purchasing this for your children to enjoy today!
A Must Have For All Fans.......2007-09-04
After years of waiting, Back to the Future is finally released to DVD. The three movies that nearly single-handedly made Michael J. Fox into a star are here for purchase.
These three DVD contain an amazement of extras, including commentary on all three features, deleted scenes for the movies, the interviews, featurettes, documetaries, an assortment of others. A definite must have for film fans of all ages.
One of the most universally loved movies to ever grace the cinema. The movies look flawless. The prints are amazing, everything looks amazing. It's just an amazing experience. Presented in 1:85:1 anamorphic widescreen, it's a beauty to the eyes, and the 5.1 soundtrack is a beauty ot the ears as well.
This is a definite must have. Good family fun for everyone, and if you've seen the movies a hundred times over, check out the discs for the boatload of extras. You won't be disappointed.
very funny.......2007-09-03
Highly creative and entertaining stories. I wish they had gone a little easier on the sexual innuendo, especially making "mom" out to be such a tramp as a teen. The language is also really rough, especially in part two.
Good trilogy.......2007-09-03
Back to the future, a super classic, and this remasterized version make this even better, if you're looking for something that send you back to the past once again, you got to see Back to the future to remember the beginning of the science fiction movies. Oh my loved 80's, Bye

Customer Reviews:
An interesting movie, but not Mansfield Park........2007-09-06
This would have been an interesting movie if the film makers had titled it something other than "Mansfield Park." However, since they chose to present it as a rendition of the Jane Austen novel, I think they took far too many liberties with the story.
The biggest difference was in the character of Fanny Price. No matter how badly we in the twenty-first century want to believe it, she was *not* a modern, outspoken, independent woman. She was deeply conservative. If the film makers disliked that aspect, why choose this book to film at all?
No film can completely capture the spirit of a novel. But when I watch an adaptation I want to feel that it was created with a fundamental level of understanding of the book, and appreciation for it. This film fails.
I think this is one of the best Austen movies (so shoot me.).......2007-08-31
So often Austen movies are mis-cast and the characters you loved become just annoying. I think this movie was cast great. I realize that some liberties were taken, but I thought the tone was great. It moves fast, and Fanny Price is given more life than the book did. It makes her out to be a little bit more like Austen herself would be in my immagination. When so many of the other movies have blown it (by casting too old, too stupid, too mean etc,) this movie got a lot of things right. It made me want to read the book again which was probably a good goal for them.
An improvement over the book.......2007-08-30
I greatly enjoyed this movie. While the characters are different from the book, the plot is essentially the same. The literary Fanny is, to put it bluntly, a "drip" and the literary Edmund is a sanctimonious prig. The Fanny in the film is bright, sardonic, and literary-minded, much like the young Jane Austen, while still being high-minded and loving. This Edmund, while still being serious and with a vocation for the church, is more capable of having fun. One can see why they're together. In the book, I couldn't.
Rent this. Don't buy........2007-07-27
I'm glad I chose to rent this before I bought. I own many Austen romances in movie form, but I won't bother buying this one. I didn't care for the interpretation at all. The cast had decent potential, but no one really stood out. This really wasn't romantically protrayed. I also didn't appreciate the raunchy undertones that were added. Not necessary and not appropriate for a wide audience.
Fascinatingly brilliant, romantic, and dark at the same time.......2007-07-14
This is one of my favorite movies and the best film version of Mansfield Park that has been made. Frances O'Connor does a wonderful job of capturing Fanny's emotions and letting us see into her mind. What's more, the romance between Fanny and Edmund is full of the tension and yet sweet, innocent, and deep love that Jane Austen portrayed in the book. All in all, a wonderful a film, one you have to see if you loved the book!

Based on Patrick Suskind's novel about a serial killer who hunts victims with his superhuman sense of smell, Perfume: Story of a Murderer is a florid, grisly portrayal of this historical drama set in 18th century France. Jean-Baptiste Grunuis (Ben Whishaw) is born under his mother's table at the fish market, onto a pile of muddy fish guts, establishing from the beginning his repulsion for putrid scents. A childhood of neglect and, later, a job at a tannery, encourage Jean-Baptiste to develop his olfactory sense rather than his verbal skills, so that an opportunity to prove his worth to Parisian perfumist, Giuseppe Baldini (Dustin Hoffman), results in his immediate hire into a promising new career. His successes in perfume mixing are negated by a blinding obsession for capturing the sublime beauty of human soul, which in his twisted logic requires the killing of young women to reduce their body fats to essential oils for the ultimate, cannibalized eau de parfum. An omniscient narrator tells the story with much sympathy for Jean-Baptiste's perverted psychology, making it, often, too obvious that his need for love justifies his murderous desire to capture misguided sexual attractions in a vile. Continuous close-ups of Grunius's nose, countered by close-ups of the places and objects he smells, enhance the viewer's understanding of his sensitivity. Repeated comparisons are made between the killer and dogs who aid, then expose his sick experimentation. The settings are fascinating, especially Baldini's perfumery and some later scenes in enflorage factories outside Provence. Whishaw's and Hoffman's performances are both grand. But Perfume unnecessarily spells out Jean-Baptiste's psychosis, squelching any chance for metaphor. This is unfortunate, considering the story's paradoxical nature. As this crude hunter navigates his way through a world of utmost delicacy, one craves ambiguity rather than explanation. --Trinie Dalton

Good movie with an unexpected ending.......2007-09-14
the ending was really unexpected! i thought it was really clever and i liked it!
i was really surprised with the scenario of the movie, very realistic, i never saw something like that in other movies...
really cool movie
Great at first, then spiraled downward.......2007-09-11
At first I thought this movie was so original and imaginative. It is filmed beautifully. The clothing and scenery. The colors. The music. I enjoyed the narration. But you keep waiting for Ben Wishaw's character Jean-Baptiste to get interesting. He is emotionless. As another reviewer said you almost don't care what happens to any of the characters. (Although I thought Alan Rickman and Dustin Hoffman did a fine job with their smaller roles). Especially Jean-Baptiste. But he's so irritating with his lack of personality or emotion that I really disliked him. Stop reading here is you don't want to read a spoiler. The main plot twist is that Jean-Baptiste wants to get his hands on the beautiful Laura and so since he is the villian of the story you hope that he will, of course, not kill her like all the other girls. And even when he gets into her room you hope, somehow she will escape. You hope that finally one of the girls will be able to defend themselves... but no, that would have actually given the movie a little suspense. He killed any chance of that when he killed her. But I kept thinking that the movie might improve with an interesting twist of an ending. There is a fine line between interesting and just ridiculous. Some people loved this entire movie including the ending. I felt the ending became so bizarre and strange that it was unpleasant to watch. It was so unfufilling and stupid that I have to give this movie 1 star, despite it's promising beginning. Maybe, as another reviewer said, the book is great. I haven't read the book. But I hated this movie. Unless you enjoy period movies, enjoy great costumes or really, really bizarre movies I recommend renting this movie - like if you have Netflix and you won't be wasting $5 to watch it. If you want to see a good movie with interesting characters, suspense and mystery see the Illusionist instead.
If you loved the book, skip the film!.......2007-09-09
The book was fabulous. The film adaptation is horrid. Where to begin? Dustin Hoffman is a fine actor, but nothing of his ability and screen power come thru in this film. Ben Whishaw? Forget it. His performance is bland and boring, his performance lacking any emotion or inspiration. You simply don't care about him as a character. In fact, that is the primary fault of the entire film. Character development is so poor that you simply don't care what happens to anyone in the film.
Alan Rickman, as usual, delivers a strong screen presence, but his role is so small that he cannot possibly save the film. John Hurt with his characteristic voice also does a fine job of narrating the film.
Perfume is an excellent novel - a unique, well-developed story. Definitely read the book! But the film is a real stinker (pun intended).
Ridiculous movie.......2007-09-08
And again, everyone loves the emperor's clothes and how pretty all the colors are. Dustin Hoffman's career is circling down the drain much in the same manner that Robert De Niro's is, by showing up in films like this that are so utterly undeserving of his talent. If this is esteemed as a work of vision and depth, then the fix is truly in and the moviegoing public has been broken on the wheel of mediocrity- happily ingesting any substandard, contemptible feed Hollywood wishes to slop into the entertainment trough. Just because someone can recreate the streets of Paris or can CGI color a few fruits and hairdos to convey beauty and richness of experience doesn't mean that we should all clap and be awestruck. This movie is meaningless and unbelievable, a mockery of the period piece, the detective thriller, the psychosexual drama, the tortured genius expose, or any other genre it unintentionally parodies.
In politics, some say we get the government we deserve. By heaping praise on hollow window dressing like "Perfume", it looks like we will all continue to get the movies we deserve. Giving further life to this box office bomb via rentals or DVD sales is simply irresponsible. I bet the author of the book had to be restrained from going into the lot when this was filming, hoping he could find the screenwriter and sock him(and I say 'him' because I'm having trouble with the idea that an intelligent woman would countenance abetting the creation of such mindless exploitation of the fairer sex) in the jaw.
Original And, Despite The Ending, I Found It Fascinating.......2007-09-05
Wow, this is really a bizarre story with an ending that probably will turn off 98 percent of viewers who stick with this two hours, 147-minute film. I'm not sure what to make of it, other than totally understanding if people are left unsatisfied after watching this movie. As I said, I'm not sure how to interpret it as I just finished it minutes ago. It leaves you almost stunned.
Rather than judging that finale or divulging it, let me just comment on the first two hours of the film, which I found utterly fascinating. If I wasn't such an admirer of photography, art and special-effects, I doubt I would have found the movie so appealing because the story is "not for everyone." However, thanks to stunning French city and countryside scenery, 18th century period and beautiful women it enhanced the story to me. Yet, regardless of the visual treats, the story was so unusual it still would have held my attention.
Ben Wishaw, who plays the lead character "Jean-Baptist Grenouille, has a face that is perfect for this role. His emaciated body, which survived a brutal childhood existence from the moment he was born also makes his character all the more credible. The looks of shock and awe on this man's face throughout the picture also add to his believability. He was mesmerizing with his haunting expressions. Dustin Hoffman and Alan Rickman provide "name" actors the film but it's Wishaw's movie, all the way.
I can only recommend this movie to those who share similar interests in cinematography and who like a "different" story but there are so many things in here - especially the ending - that could offend so many people, I would be hesitant to recommend this to the general viewer.

A love letter to movies (and the French new wave of the 1960s in particular), Bernardo Bertolucci's The Dreamers starts with a 1968 riot outside of a Parisian movie palace then burrows into an insular love triangle. Matthew (Michael Pitt, Hedwig and the Angry Inch), an expatriate American student, bonds with a twin brother and sister, Isabelle (Eva Green) and Theo (Louis Garrel), over their mutual love of film--they not only quote lines of dialogue, they act out small bits and challenge each other to name the cinematic source. Matthew suspects the twins of incest, but that doesn't stop him from falling into his own intimacies with Isabelle. As the threesome becomes threatened, Paris succumbs to student riots. The Dreamers aspires to be kinky, but the results are more decorative than decadent; nonetheless, the movie's lively energy recalls the careless and vital exuberance of Godard and Truffaut. --Bret Fetzer
Description
From Academy Award®-winning director Bernardo Bertolucci (The Last Emperor, 1987), comes an erotic tale of three young film lovers brought together by their passion for movies -- and each other. When Isabelle and Theo (Eva Green, Louis Garrel) invite Matthew (Michael Pitt) to stay with them, what begins as a casual friendship ripens into a sensual voyage of discovery and desire in which nothing is off limits and anything is possible. Featuring an engaging, seductive cast, The Dreamers is a ?spellbinding, provocative feast!" (Ebert & Roeper)
Customer Reviews:
I'll say this: it is pretty........2007-09-13
This is a very pretty film. Paris is as rich and gorgeous as ever, and the main trio of actors are beautiful (and you get to see plenty of them!) But the film suffers from a seeming need to make the characters "quirky" that winds up coming across as some cross between pretentious and weird. We got the film because it was supposed to be erotic, but...um?
I guess the bottom line is, I just didn't believe in these characters or their relationship -- it felt contrived, calculated for effect (the "shocking" relationship between the siblings, etc. And hasn't the "American falls in with decadent Europeans" thing been done to death by now?)
I'm sure if you're a fan of one or more of the actors, that's probably enough to carry you through. As I said, they are pretty, but that wasn't enough for me.
Beautiful........2007-08-24
This movie is utterly beautiful. Its beyond words as to how amazing this film actually is. Utterly disturbing yet it puts you into some sort of artsy trance. *full frontal from Michael Pitt* You so cannot go wrong with this film!!! XoXoX
The Dreamers or The Kinky?.......2007-08-24
I loved this movie! It is so packed with forbidden eroticism that it goes beyond taboo! But, it is not a bad kind of taboo.
The story centers around a young American film student studying in France. He doesn't have many friends, until one day he meets a beautiful girl at a rally and her off-standish brother. The siblings take the young American under their wing and eventually he moves in with them. It is during this time that he sees how "different" the siblings are.
During a late night bathroom run, he catches a glimpse of the brother and sister lying in the same bed nude. If you are schocked by this first erotic scene then you should definitley not watch the rest of the movie because it definitley doesn't get any milder. Although the plot is less than developed, the viewer is completely sucked in to the lives of the three major characters.
Though the siblings are weird and do things that normal brothers and sisters would never DREAM of doing, there is something extremeley natural and normal about it. As if seeing each other nude and during sexual acts is as normal as sharing a meal at the family dinner table. They portray the classic taboo of incest in a classy manner, if that is even possible.
I find myself unable to articulate just how good I thought this movie was. It shocked me from beginning to end, with behavior that I would normally find disgusting, but somehow found endearing in this movie. You just have to watch this movie for yourself!
Eva Green.......2007-08-14
The only reason to get this movie is for Eva Green. This woman has a body out of this world. She is the only reason I recommend this movie.
an extraordinary film although not for everyone.......2007-07-23
this is by far one of my favorite movies ever. i, however, tend to like movies that are very matter of fact as many french movies are, and movies that deal with sex and sexual issues. the very direct addressing of adolescent sexual awakening and confusion might be too much for people with with sex issue hang ups. but for people who are comfortable with very honest story telling this movie is a triumph.

Description
Five cities. Five taxicabs. A multitude of strangers in the night. Jim Jarmusch assembled an extraordinary international cast of actors (including Gena Rowlands, Winona Ryder, Armin Mueller-Stahl, Béatrice Dalle, and Roberto Benigni) for this hilarious quintet of tales of urban displacement and existential angst, spanning time zones, continents, and languages. Jarmusch's lovingly askew view of humanity from the passenger seat makes for one his most charming and beloved films.
Customer Reviews:
Take a cab ride with Jim Jarmusch..........2007-09-10
Jim Jarmusch began the 1990s with Night on Earth and would go on to produce some of his strongest work with Dead Man and Ghost Dog. However, these two films don't quite have the warmth and the humanity abundant in Night on Earth. While he does avoid major Hollywood studios, Jarmusch has no problem collaborating with well known actors. His first experiment was with this film, which featured famous movie stars, Winona Ryder, Gena Rowlands, and Rosie Perez. Jarmusch returned to the structure he used so well in Mystery Train, but expanded its scope. Night on Earth is broken up into five stories that all occur at the same time but in different cities all over the world with the action restricted to taxi cab rides. Jarmusch uses these encounters as springboards for interesting, often hilarious, sometimes tragic discussions ranging from acting in movies to circus clowns to inappropriate acts with farm animals.
After Night on Earth, Jarmusch's methodically paced, dry-witted comedies were no longer en vogue, only to be replaced by a louder, flashier wave of new filmmakers with overt pop culture sensibilities. This film manages to avoid the hackneyed cliché of the world weary cabbie to present touching insights into the human condition with situations that run the entire emotional spectrum.
"Q&A with Jim" features Jarmusch answering questions submitted by fans from all over the world (this was also done on the Down By Law DVD). Among the highlights include him telling an anecdote about a scary moment during the filming in Helsinki. Jarmusch talks about his movie-watching habits and about how he works with actors.
"Alice: Magazine Europeen" is a brief interview with Jarmusch on Belgian television in 1992. The interview mostly takes place in the back of a moving car as the filmmaker talks about the origins of his film.
Finally, there is an audio commentary by the film's director of photography Frederick Elmes and sound mixer Drew Kunin. The two men talk about the challenge of moving from city to city and how they had to train a new crew in every place. Elmes and Kunin recount many filming anecdotes, like how no actual cabs would stop for Giancarlo Esposito in the NY segment. They provide fascinating insight into making an independent film all over the world.
Jarmusch Masterpiece on DVD for the First Time!!!.......2007-08-07
So it only took 16 years for it's first USA release on DVD, but I think it will be worth the wait. I only recently parted with my VHS copy of this film when Criterion announced it's release. While obviously I've not seen the release, there is no reason Criterion will disappoint. For those who haven't seen the film (and I've met dozens of people who still haven't) I believe it to be Jarmusch's best for many reasons.
With five stories (five cabs, five drivers, five cities in the world), all occurring simultaneously, it examines Jarmusch's fascination with the crossing and meeting of cultures and classes. The film is jammed packed with humor, pathos, sadness, thought provoking stories of people that you actually care about after only 20 minutes and so much more. Tom Waits (a regular contributor to the work of Jarmusch) does not appear in the film, but wrote the soundtrack instead (so in some ways is in the entire film!). I would have loved to have seen a 6th story with Waits as the cabbie!!
Every actor is awesome, some giving a career highlight performance, including Winona Ryder, Gena Rowlands, Armin Mueller-Stahl, Giancarlo Esposito, Rosie Perez, Roberto Benigni (who was mostly unknown at the time), and several European actors that I've never seen elsewhere, but have never forgotten all these years later.
It's hard for me to pick a favorite story, because like a great short story collection, my favorite keeps changing. The Italian story (with Benigni) is the slightest story with none of the serious subtext the other stories have, but it is also the funniest, so it's hard not to love it. Benigni, for me, has never been better.
The final story is almost "too" sad, with almost no humor, but the silence, the snow, the heartbreaking story that the cab driver tells, seems to transcend the sadness that shrouds the scene (I could definitely see Bergman doing this story).
The first story is great, with our notions of these two great actresses (Rowlands and Ryder) turned upside down. Who is vulnerable? Who is charge of their life? Who is truly happy? I'm not sure Jarumsch has ever been called a "feminist", but these two women are strong, smart, funny and I can't think of a female writer/director that has written two better characters? I might have to pick this as my favorite on most of my dozen viewings, but each story has something unique to offer.
For those who have seen Jarmusch's latest films (Broken Flowers and Coffee & Cigarettes), this one is closer to the latter film, but far surpasses it. While the five stories are diverse (of location, language, style), they are held together with Waits slippery and mysterious music, the passing landscapes outside the taxi cab's windows, and Jarmusch's themes of alienation, existentialism and the basic goodness of people trying to relate to each other even when the odds are against it.
For those who haven't seen this film the wait is, thankfully, almost over. Thank you Criterion!
Outrageous-Irreverent.......2007-08-06
This movie is a strange melange of several stories that take place in a taxi cab over the course of 24 hours
around the world. The first is with Gena Rowlands and Winona Ryder... a bit uncomfortable as the previous reviewer said.. but appropriate to the subject. Each story has a bit of pathos as with Paris & Helsinki, or a bit of over the top humor as with the stories in New York and Italy. If you are a Jim Jarmusch, or Roberto Begnini fan.. you will enjoy this. If you go for more "conservative" types of movies steer clear.. this is a cavalcade of black humor mixed in with some very touching moments. Particularly Helsinki.... a quiet but thoughful ending to this Fellini-esque romp across the globe. If you have a soft spot for the rude and ridiculous bordering on the incomprehensible this is the one for you. I've been waiting for this movie to come out on DVD since I first saw it in the 1990s. It's one I will enjoy seeing over and over. Foul language may repel some viewers, but for those who are not squeemish... this is a masterpiece that wacks you across the head then waits for you to laugh.
Five Taxis. Five Cities. One Night. .......2007-07-13
Jarmusch went for a series of shorts like he did in Mystery Train, only this time he decided to stetch his vision out to include LA, New York, Paris, Rome and Helsinki, with a cavalcade of stars including Winona Ryder and Gena Rowlands. The movie has its appeal, especially the foul-mouthed Roberto Benigni divulging more than the priest he takes for a ride through the streets of Rome would like to hear. The stories all revolve around taxi rides during the course of a single night, more or less trying to capture the spirit of the cities in which they take place. Somehow the taxi ride in Helsinki rang the most true, but then maybe that's because I know nothing about Helsinki. The short stories are choppy and uneven with nothing to hold them together, unlike Mystery Train, which was set entirely in Memphis. The scenarios provide fine comic ground for actors like Benigni, Rosie Perez and Giancarlo Esposito, but other actors seem to struggle with their roles, notably Ryder as the cab driver, Corky. Jarmusch purportedly wrote the script in a week and it shows. After such independent hits as Stranger than Paradise and Down By Law, Night on Earth was a bit of a disappointment, but worth watching just the same.

Fans of Oliver Stone's J.F.K. will recognize the opening moments of writer-director Eugene Jarecki's Why We Fight, in which outgoing President Dwight Eisenhower warns of the pernicious and growing influence of what he called the "military-industrial complex." But Stone's movie, which uses the same footage, was a work of fiction. While those who disagree with the decidedly leftist point of view in this documentary will probably consider it the product of paranoid liberal fantasy as well, there's enough credible material, much of it supplied by the targets of Jarecki's criticisms, to make Eisenhower look like a prophet and everyone else uneasy about the dark confluence of politics, money, and war that controls the country's fortunes. The message here is that while there may be some who sincerely believe that America's various military engagements (in Iraq, Vietnam, Grenada, Panama, and elsewhere) since World War II are the product of our God-given duty to spread freedom and halt the influence of evil ideologies around the world, the real reason we fight is that war is good business. This is hardly a bulletin; anyone who is surprised by allegations that politicians pander to defense contractors, or that Vice President Dick Cheney helped secure huge deals for Halliburton, the company he formerly headed, simply hasn't been paying attention (Politicians lie? How shocking!). In fact, the principal drawback to Jarecki's film is simply that there's nothing particularly revelatory or compelling about it. Only when he takes a personal approach does he go beyond the obvious; the story of a retired New York policeman and former Vietnam veteran whose son died in the World Trade Center, who wanted revenge, but who became seriously disillusioned when Bush admitted that the war in Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11, adds some much needed human interest. Still, Why We Fight, which includes a director's audio commentary track and a few other bonus features, serves as a grim reminder that the world's most powerful nation has strayed far from the principles of our founding fathers, a development that does not bode well for America's future. --Sam Graham
Description
Why We Fight is the provocative new documentary from acclaimed filmmaker Eugene Jarecki (The Trials of Henry Kissinger) and winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival.
Named after the series of short films by legendary director Frank Capra that explored America's reasons for entering World War II, Why We Fight surveys a half-century of military conflicts, asking how - and answering why - a nation of, by and for the people has become the savings-and-loan of a government system whose survival depends on an Orwellian state of constant war.
The Why We Fight DVD features interviews and observations by a "who's who" of military and Washington insiders including Senator John McCain, Gore Vidal, and Dan Rather. Beginning with President Dwight D. Eisenhower's prescient 1961 speech warning of the rise of the "military industrial complex," Why We Fight moves far beyond the headlines of various American military operations to the deeper questions of why America seemingly is always at war. What are the forces - political, economic, and ideological - that drive us to clash against an ever-changing enemy? Just why does America fight? Unforgettable, powerful and at times disturbing, Why We Fight on DVD will challenge viewers long after the last fade-out.

why america fights ..........2007-09-02
very informative movie ... shows all the wars that the USA has been involved with to protect our freedom ... viewpoints of different individuals ... you decide if we did the right thing ... there is a price to pay for our way of life ... interesting ... thank you for offering it on your website ...
A must see!.......2007-08-23
This is an understated documentary, not a polemic. I am buying copies for friends, and encouraging them to show it to everyone they know. A remarkable, UNBIASED, look at the US military industrial complex. Tells how it works, what it does, and why it prospers. The only down side is that it could leave you despairing about how and where this is all going to end.
I Have Four Sons.......2007-08-23
I have four sons and have purchased a copy of this incredibly courageous documentary for each of them. I love my country and am heart broken to have to warn my boys against throwing away their lives for this insane war, or the next one that they dream up. A wonderful film. Pray that we can change before it is too late...
Please Watch It.......2007-08-20
I found the main point of the movie, about the military-industrial complex and its influences, a bit exaggerated. No doubt they play a part in decisions to go to war, but the sole or even the primary reason ... is a bit exaggerated. However, a lot of the subterfuge I found particularly good. Chalmers Johnson's discussion of "blowback" in this movie led me to read his book. Also, there was a colonel taking about the Pentagon's Center For Strategic Plans, that was created to bypass the CIA and DIA with fabricated reasons for war, etc. These things, that were secondary issues, haven't appeared as well anywhere else. It's in these things that I found the most satisfying from the movie.
It's definitely worth the watch, but the arms industry is exaggerated. I recommend that viewers also read Iraq: The Logic of Withdrawal for a better understanding of why we invaded Iraq.
An Important Film.......2007-08-16
I watched this film for the first time this evening and am very glad I did so. Prior to watching this film, I had come to similar conclusion such as wondering why the military-industrial complex was running around without a leash and pondering why more Americans weren't concerned about our government officials pandering increasingly to corporations in recent years. But it's ingrained in us to be patient and to maintain in our government and the people.
This film helps to expose what's really been going on behind the scenes and how the American people have done little to stop it. It helps us to connect the dots to finally accept the fact that we were taken for a ride. A ride paid for with our own tax dollars used to pad corporate pockets.
I definitely recommend this film!

For earthbound humans, Winged Migration is as close as any of us will get to sharing the sky with our fine feathered friends. It's as if French director Jacques Perrin and his international crew of dedicated filmmakers had been given a full-access pass by Mother Nature herself, with the complete "cooperation" of countless species of migrating birds, all answering to eons of migratory instinct. The film is utterly simple in purpose, with minimal narration and on-screen titles to identify the wondrous varieties of flying wildlife, but its visceral effect is humbling, awesome and magnificently profound. Technically, Perrin surpasses the achievement of his earlier film Microcosmos (which did for insects what this film does for birds), and apart from a few digital skyscapes for poetic effect, this astonishing film uses no special effects whatsoever, with soaring, seemingly miraculous camera work that blesses the viewer with, quite literally, a bird's-eye view. A brief but important hunting scene may upset sensitive viewers and children, but doesn't stop Winged Migration from being essential all-ages viewing. --Jeff Shannon
Description
Rolling Stone raved that Winged Migration, the critically acclaimed, awe-inspiring documentary, is"A movie miracle! It soars! You feel privileged!" Witness as five film crews follow a rich variety of bird migrations through 40 countries and each of the seven continents. With teams totalling more than 450 people, 17 pilots and 14 cinematographers used planes, gliders, helicopters and balloons to fly alongside, above, below and in front of their subjects. The result is a film of staggering beauty that Entertainment Weekly hailed as "Mesmerizing!" and the Los Angeles Times applauded as "Breathtaking! As lofty as it is exhilarating!" Open your eyes to the wonders of the natural world as you fly along with the world's most gorgeous birds through areas.

Beautifully done.......2007-09-05
Watching the movie, I felt like I was flying with the birds. And I know so much more about them now. Hopefully any bird hunter who watched it will stop hunting.
Winged Migration.......2007-09-05
FABULOUS! This is absolutely the most amazing nature filming/cinematography I have ever seen. The opening sequence alone had my jaw dropping, you were flying up in the sky right next to the birds, YOU are flying. And it is not just about birds, the scenery is breathtaking. I have bought it for many gifts, it works for all ages.
Awesome.......2007-08-28
To escape from personal problems, the depressing national and international ills, returning to nature is the best cure and there is none better than "Winged Migration" to remind us of the marvels and mysteries of our universe. I can think of no better experience than this incredible film..for young and old alike and definitely for at least annual viewing.
