Should have been titled "Stupidity and Violence".......2007-03-18
The oddest thing about this film is probably its name. The stupidity and violence depicted in it were so typical and so general in nature that it seems apparent the title and the propaganda around it were generated by someone other than those who created the film itself. If I had named the film, it would have been something more like "Stupidity and Violence" (perhaps "American Gun" sounds more provocative.)
The greatest stupidity is that people have been educated--particularly in compulsory government institutions--to ignore the reality that people must be held responsible for their own actions. An extension of that is that if people cannot accept responsibility for their own actions, they have difficulty, without some guilt, holding others responsible for their mistakes and aggression. In come firearms, and the responsibility that comes with owning and operating them. Because people have a hard time dealing with the reality of individual responsibility, they choose to hold inanimate objects such as weapons responsible for the actions of foolish and aggressive people.
This can account for the absurd term "gun violence." No gun ever did violence to anyone. Foolish or unthinking people do, and they do it with and without weapons, and if with a weapon, only sometimes is a firearm involved. The film itself depicts this by showing a number of senseless acts, committed with and without weapons--sometimes knives. What's more, it shows individuals who could benefit from personal protection, but being denied it by laws which are supposedly written to protect us. Every day, far more people defend themselves with firearms than hurt others with them, and because those instances are not reported in media, the violence they stop or avoid altogether is unseen. The economist John Lott explored this effect in "More Guns, Less Crime" where he demonstrates that, counter-intuitively, communities with fewer gun laws are safer and less violent (crime goes down after firearms laws are loosened.) This is because aggressive firearms legislation virtually guarantees that the "bad guys" are well armed, and that responsible individuals are deprived their natural right of effective self defense.
One could more easily site the stupidity of government run schools (around which much of the violence seems centered--ironically, "gun free zones") or ineffective and improperly tasked law enforcement, as to site firearms as the problem. Thus we see the difference in viewpoint illustrated. If you're a leftist, you blame guns. If you're a right-wing zealot, you blame lawlessness. If you're libertarian, you blame stupidity, a lack of individual responsibility, and a society that inhibits choice and independence--from government schools and a bleating media, radiating outward.
If one views the "making of" one sees that many of the participants "get it," so there's hope. What's more, the intelligent viewer sees the difference between the message on the box and the message on in the medium. They know that the story was about people's choices, not a tool that is occasionally abused by some and routinely used by many others to maintain peace and discourage violence. In fact, one actress comments on the difference between the two cultures and the way they view and respect (or disrespect) firearms.
I would have given the film about 3 stars for the overall quality of the message and the performance (there were some disturbing camera effects which I attribute to artistic choice, and they detracted from the viewing experience, and I found some of the characterization and dialog weak, though the story was fairly good), but I was so disgusted by the title and the attempt to preprogram the audience with the overt messages on the cover that I thought it better merited two. If you decide to view or purchase this film, please keep the aforementioned thoughts in mind.
Nice effort from writer-director Aric Avelino.......2007-01-25
"American Gun", is an attempt to do what so many filmmakers wish: to speak out on an issue, changing minds or informing, shedding light on dark areas. It is a shame that "American Gun" is not more successful, as it generally comes across as directionless, failing to convey its tagline message that firing a gun shatters more than silence.
In the style of movies like "Crash", or "Magnolia", "American Gun" follows several separate story threads that intertwine- though, it must be said, to a lesser extent than those films. Marcia Gay Haden plays the mother of a boy who took part in a Columbine-style assault on his school who now has to deal not only with the hostility of parents around her but also her other son, now marked by the shadow of his brother's actions. Forest Whitaker's character is the principal of an inner-city school who has become so consumed by protecting his school and his students that his relationship with his wife (Garcelle Beauvais) and son is suffering. The daily struggle to keep his campus safe hasn't prevented one of his better students, who lives in a dangerous neighborhood, from acquiring a gun to protect himself- especially during the night job he has taken on to support his family. Linda Cardellini is a college student working in a gun shop owned by her grandfather (Donald Sutherland) who is struggling to find her place in life, and Tony Goldwyn is a police officer forced to confront his feelings as one of the officers criticized for not doing more to prevent the school shooting tragedy.
The major problem with the movie is that a synopsis fills you in on almost everything you need you know about the content of the film. There are few compelling scenes, whether we focus on action or emotion, and the characters are so one-dimensional that their names barely matter- within the confines of the film, they matter only insofar as their thoughts about firearms exist. To a certain degree, this is the point- Avelino clearly wishes to portray a series of stories that speak for themselves. However, the film ultimately feels impersonal, as if too much has been contrived in order to make a point. By and large, the actors perform adequately, and Whitaker's performance is excellent- although this might be the result of receiving a role with far more substance to it than many of the other capable actors in the film. His character comes off as noble, but human- someone with the best of intentions who is inevitably worn down by the magnitude of the task in front of him. Nobody could walk away from the task of keeping children safe, and yet it is too much of a burden for him to shoulder.
By and large, the other characters are not that persuasive. Their stories, or settings, are interesting enough, but barring one or two moments of genuine pathos, very little happens that is worth the setup. "American Gun" is not a bad film. It simply isn't very good. The slow pace and lack of direction lessen the impact of its serious themes, and the detached feeling lessens emotional connection and sympathy towards the main characters. It's a film one can watch, but not, perhaps, a film worth watching.
A great film about one of America's most taboo subjects.......2006-11-25
I got the chance to view this film on IFC onDemand, and may I say I happy I saw it. It was even better than I expected, although it ended too soon.
"American Gun" stars an ensemble cast of Marcia Gay Harden, Forest Whitaker, Donald Sutherland, Nikki Reed, Linda Cardellini, Chris Marquette, Amanda Seyfried, and Garcelle Beauvais, just to name a few.
Harden is a single mother struggling with the aftermath of her older son's school shooting (in which he was a culprit) and his suicide. She is almost forced out of the neighborhood because of the crime that she is blamed for.
Whitaker is a caring principal in an inner city high school, who's morals are tested when his students begin bringing guns to school to protect themselves. You get the impression he cares more for his students than his wife (Beauvais, more beautiful and talented than ever) and his young son, whom he gives a girl's backpack to instead of buying a new one.
Sutherland is a gun shop owner who employs his college age granddaughter (Cardellini). At first, she is reluctant, but thinks again when her friend is almost raped.
"American Gun" is a character study of an action that is too close to any of us to take lightly. It does not exploit, but informs. Informs us that one move can change your life and others with it.
"American Gun" reminds that this is what filmmaking is about, even though it should have gotten a wider release.
For a good Indie film, I recommend not to rent it, but buy it.
Five stars
Too close for comfort.......2006-11-07
This movie is very painful to watch. Real people are the subject, real people who are contradictory, foolish, unwise, passionate, disturbed. In other words, very human. It is a very sad movie.
I find it very hard to see this as entertainment or as art. Its is right in the middle of truth. Unbearable.
Some great acting. Whitaker, Harden, Sutherland, and more.
One of the Best Films of 2006.......2006-10-01
"American Gun" is a film that came out and just kind of came and went. It recieved generally good review, but it hasn't received much notice or recognition. Having seen Ebert & Roeper praise it (and the whole premise sounded interesting), I have to say that this is one of the best films that I've seen in 2006. It, like last years 'Crash', takes a group of unrelated stories and tells them. The difference is, they never intertwine with each other. Just 4 (main) stories that all revolve around guns basically. Oscar winner Marcia Gay Harden plays Janet, a single mother trying desperately to raise her young son (Chris Marquette) despite endless scrutiny from her neighbors. Janet's son was 1/2 of the assailants in a school shooting three years ago that still has an effect on everyone involved. Miles away, Carter (Forest Whitaker, in one of his best performances) plays a high school principal trying to make a difference in his young students lives; Despite the seemingly endless amount of violence that occurs in the school setting. Frank (Tony Goldwyn) is a cop who still feels guilty that he didn't do more to save lives during the aforementioned school shooting. In Virginia, a young woman named Maryanne (Linda Cardellini, 'Brokeback Mountain') works for her Grandpa (Donald Sutherland) at his gun shop. And finally, Marcus (Chris Marren Jr.)
gets caught at Carter's school with a gun that he's in posession of for protection while at work. Most of the characters are developed well enough, except Maryanne who leaves something to be wanted. The movie has a great cast, that includes Nikki Reed ('Thirteen') and Schuyler Fisk ('Orange County'); I think this is one of the most powerful, gritty, well-acted films of the year. The only complaints are the lack of development on Maryanne (and don't get me wrong, it's there...It's just not fully developed) and the abrupt ending. Whitaker gives the best performance in the film as Carter, whom you can see really wants to help his students while he neglects his family. If nothing else, see this film for Whitaker's performance.

Eager rookie J.J. Johnson (Michael Boatman) is the only black officer in a Los Angeles sheriffs' substation. He soon comes up against ingrained racism, corruption, and violence on the force as he tries to fit in. A young black man (Ice Cube) is pulled in as a murder suspect after a wealthy man's wife is shot in a botched armed robbery. Boatman and Deputy Fields (Lori Petty) soon realize that the facts in the case don't add up and dig a bit deeper. They soon find a maze of deceit that extends upward from the sheriffs to L.A. city government. Though slow and rather convoluted, this film has an absorbing story worthy of Joseph Wambaugh and an interesting cast to hold viewers' attention. Blaxploitation vet Bernie Casey excels as Ice Cube's defense attorney, and Boatman is fine as the wide-eyed Johnson. Director Charles Burnett infuses a sense of dread and foreboding into sunny Los Angeles locations and well-lit convenience stores that turns the rules of dimly lit thrillers upside down. He also does a fair job of capturing the macho-cowboy mentality of the all-white sheriffs, complete with styled hair and heavy mustaches. Considering the timely subject matter, this film could have easily become heavy-handed cop opera, but the character development and performances are strong enough to lift it above the level of invective. After all, it's a scenario that's all too believable in light of late-1990s events. --Jerry Renshaw
Description
The Miramax Collector's Series proudly presents the release of the powerful action thriller applauded by critics and moviegoers alike ... written and directed by Charles Burnett. An ambitious rookie cop and his station's only female deputy (Lori Petty -- A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN) uncover widespread corruption and conspiracy when they realize that an innocent man (Ice Cube -- XXX: STATE OF THE UNION) has been jailed for a shocking murder. Suddenly, these two outsiders are forced to make an impossible choice: fit into an unjust system by breaking the law they're sworn to uphold ... or break the unwritten code of silence that could be their only protection.
Customer Reviews:
A deserving special edition for this movie.......2005-09-16
Charles Burnett is one of America's most underrated filmmakers working today. Unlike his African-American contemporary, Spike Lee, he is not an outspoken personality in his own right, preferring to let the work speak for itself. In many respects, his films are self-aware in terms of social conscience as John Sayles' own work. As a result, Burnett also finds it hard to get his movies widely distributed. The Glass Shield was his attempt to reach a wider audience by having Miramax distribute it. Sadly, like Jim Jarmusch's Dead Man, it was subjected to the same lackluster release by Miramax head honcho, Harvey Weinstein and promptly disappeared.
Stylistically, Burnett is not as in-your-face as Spike Lee, preferring to let the content and the characters deliver his message. That's not to say his films don't have their own style-The Glass Shield is a well-shot movie (adopting a colour scheme that reflects Johnson's comic book fantasies)-it just doesn't cause unnecessary attention to itself.
There is an audio commentary by writer/director Charles Burnett and composer Stephen James Taylor. Burnett points out that the cops are conditioned not to trust anyone before they are sent out on patrol and this often explains their hostile behaviour on the streets. This is an intelligent, conversational track with lots of excellent observations by both men with some good stories told by Burnett.
"A Conversation with Charles Burnett" is a featurette that alternates between clips from the movie and Burnett talking.
"Film Scoring with Stephen James Taylor" explores this composer's creative process. He drew from all kinds of musical genres with Negro spiritual melodies as the score's heart. He also talks about the origins of key musical cues from the movie.
Finally, there is a theatrical trailer.
A cop movie anyone could love.......2005-07-28
One of the most acurate portrayals of american police departments in the good ole USA. A good story told from a real perspective. Intense drama, lying racist cops, and brilliant African-American & Latino lawyers. The story follows two naive young rookie cops, a black male and a white female, who learn a hard lesson about trying to join an all white male police department they really don't belong in. The only other accurate potrayal of dirty cops on film, that I know of is "Dark Blue" with Kurt Russell. Check it out.
Great Little Gem.......2004-03-07
I liked this modest budget cop thriller movie very much. A great ensemble cast was assembled with well known and recognizable actors (including Ice Cube, Lori Petty, Michael Boatman, Michael Ironside, M. Emmett Walsh, Elliot Gould) for reportedly very little money. The production values are also top notch for a low budget film. The Director, Charles Burnett, a MacArthur "Genius" Grant award winner and the writer-director of the acclaimed "To Sleep With Anger", apparently attracted top talent and key crew people for this film.
Although there are no big, expensive stunts, there is plenty of suspense and drama. The film is supposed to be based upon true events and stories, making it more realistic and compelling.
I highly recommend this film.
Highly Recommended........2001-11-25
This movie was pretty good. I started watchin this movie with my friends and they said it was a LA CONFIDENTIAL ripoff. I think that it wasn't and i think it was awesome.
Oldsmobile91, "The Glass Shield".......1999-11-02
This movie was done very well, Michael Boatman, Lori Petty, Ice Cube all acted the way they should for there parts. But then you have mean Michael Ironside, who wants to put everyone through hell in the sheriff's department. I thought that Elliott Gould was the only wimp in this movie, he's the one who did not act real well in this film. But timely look at racism and corruption in the sheriff's department as seen through the eyes of African American rookie J.J. Johnson (Boatman). He realizes his own department is framing a black man (Ice Cube) for a murder he did not commit. Lori Petty who becomes Johnson's only ally on the force. "THIS IS A MUST SEE FILM"

actually not a cannibal movie.......2003-05-14
i've seen many of those cannibal movies, and this movie hasn't got any cannibalism in it. tribes and gory scenes though.
i think the artwork shown here is terrible, my release is from Italian Shock and it has the original retro artwork. go for that release instead.
the movie is beautiful, with a wonderful soundtrack, and though it contains a lot of violence it is a very touching flake. if we shall call this a cannibal-movie, this is maybe the most serious movie of them all - next to cannibal holocaust.
this movie does not contain the awful mass of authentic animal killing scenes, that for example that scum Umberto Lenzi used to use in his films (cannibal ferox, eaten alive, man from the deep river). this is a low bugdet, high quality motion picture.
if you ask me, a like this movie most among those "cannibal"-movies. second comes "emanuelle and the last cannibals" and third comes "cannibal holocaust".
Fine Cannibal Film.......2003-01-03
I have almost all of the cannibal movies ever made and this is one of the most original. A girl takes a boat voyage with her parents, aunt and uncle. Her parents are killed with blowguns. A tribe of natives takes the girl captive and a warrior takes a particular liking to her, but it is said he killed her parents. There's a twist ending that wraps it up, and shouldn't be too surprising unless you forgot some big continiuity at the beginning. The girl is modestly hot and topless through most of it. This is a must-see for fans of cannibals. I guess this version by Shock-O-Rama is an official release, as it's listed here on Amazon.com.
Hmmm?........2002-01-13
This movie is basicly too lousy too be watched at all. The plot is boring and the gore and sex that might make one forget about that is badly made and occurs too rarely.
Yawn.

COBURN'S FINAL SHOT.......2005-09-26
AMERICAN GUN offers the marvelous actor James Coburn in his last screen role. Director Alan Jacobs captures a surreaslistic atmosphere as he explores the trajectory of a gun that was used in the killing of Coburn's daughter (a pre-Sideways Virginia Madsen). Jacobs cleverly dispenses clues as to this gun's path, but the viewer is caught up in the tragic dilemma of Coburn, who wants to know how this gun reached the point of where it resulted in his daughter's death. Coburn is excellent in his performance, as is Masden in her understated delivery. Barbara Bain (Mission Impossible's Cinnamon Carter) adds some level headed credibility in the role of Coburn's wife, and Alexandra Holden is very good as Masden's wayward daughter.
I must admit I didn't see the ending coming, but if one thinks back to Jacobs' clever manipulation, you can see how it ends up this way.
At times depressing and fatalistic, there is a warmth and a lot of familial integrity shown in this well made indie.
American Gun is more than just a few plot twists...........2005-04-24
Just when I think I have seen all the films that could possibly leave me vulnerable, I find this under-rated and powerful DVD. I watched this on Showtime the other evening and it left me in that "wow" fog a good movie can leave behind.
If you start watching AMERICAN GUN and are tempted to stop because Virginia Madsen apparently leaves the storyline early, don't! Not only is her character crucial to the overall plot, James Coburn knocks you out cold with his caring, but angry-at-the-world-and-himself portrayal of a father who loses a family member to a fatal gunshot.
I hesitate to describe too much of the plot since there are unexpected turns and twists that shouldn't be revealed, but I can elaborate on the style and lovely quietness of AMERICAN GUN. Maybe "quiet" isn't the whole truth since various gunshots explode throughout the movie as James Coburn explores the history of one gun that has traveled through many different hands. The loudness is also there when he looks back at his own experiences with ammunition in war.
AMERICAN GUN hit me so hard because it is an emotional film more than anything else. At first it seems to be about how a husband and wife each handle grief differently or how one man is determined to find his daughter's killer. In a way, that could sum it up, but there's also a lot about closure and what we think we see versus what is actually there.
The reason this indie deserves more acclaim is because it takes you places you don't expect to go and you are able to experience that great mental process called "thinking." Watch this by yourself--or better yet, rent it with a group of friends who truly enjoy discussing (but not talking to death) a great work of art.
On a side note: The whole cast is just spectacular (a small role by Alexandra Holden will get you a bit teary-eyed), but Coburn and Madsen shine.
Moral Discussion With Plenty of Complexity.......2004-10-25
_American Gun_ seems to set people off in two distinct directions: either you love it's subtle anti-firearms message or you run screaming for the hills and feel like the movie falls apart in the last fifteen minutes. Regardless of my own political/moral views concerning guns, I was pulled into this film by two aspects. First, the story was a fresh one and did not (for most of the film) descend into a well-traveled plot. The idea of tracing a gun's history, letting the owner's lives and experiences tell the story of self-defense and homicide, is an original one that made the movie fresh and exciting. This device, the gun, also provided a source for constant change in the movie and kept the movie afloat on its current. The second thing that pulled me in is the powerful final performance of James Coburn, an actor who always succeeds at playing his parts with style, grace, and a deft control of the character. Coburn manages to communicate the pain of a man who loses his daughter to an act of gun violence. His ability to remain strong, shutting out those around him while privately grieving for his daughter, honestly connects up to my experiences of strong men of the old guard. James Coburn was a wonderful actor and _American Gun_ is a fine film to cap one's career.
As to the final section of the film, I do not agree with those who believe the film falls apart or becomes unravelled. I enjoyed the sudden twist of the final few moments (though I can't say it was completely unexpected) and thought that it gave the film a final powerful blow. Rather than depict the lives of saints who are completely sympathetic and understandable, director Alan Jacobs decided to portray real characters-complete with moral ambiguity and problems. If you enjoy smaller films and will not be completely chaffed by a subtle movie that explores the issues concerning the Second Amendment, you should check out _American Gun_ . While it may not be the best thing you've seen in years, it is a fresh film, with a fresh outlook, that guarantees to entertain.
good movie.......2004-07-04
This movie is about a man played by James Coburn, who is determined to find out the origins of the gun that killed his daughter. He tracks its history and finds out it has been all around the United States and has been used for both good and bad reasons. Very interesting twist at the end. Definitely a good movie.
Wow.......2004-06-08
James Coburn's very last movie and probably one of his best ever.
In the Christmas Eve, his daughter gets shot to death, and the only thing that consoles him in those difficult times is taking a journey to trace the owners of the gun who killed his lovely daughter.
It's one of the best thrillers I've ever seen but also one of the worst as the screen-writer made an enormous error that will leave you deceived when the movie is over.

"THIS IS A MUST SEE FILM"

good solid b-western.......2006-06-06
i remember this movie from when i was little and the 3:00 o'clock movie would come on, and i still find that i like it! a group of soldiers must keep the title gun away from indians as they protect a familt and try to get the gun to work. noyhing great here but a good solid b-western from the last days of the big screen western!
Average western with good cast.......2005-01-02
The Gatling Gun, aka King Gun, is a nice little western with a good cast of western regulars. The US Cavalry is stretched pretty thin all across the Southwest as the Apaches attack all over the territory. The government sends a Gatling Gun to each military post to help fend off the Indians. At one outpost, the gun is stolen so a troop must go out and bring it back. During the rescue effort, the troop comes across a family trying to make it to safety. The cavalry troop and the family must fight their way home as an Apache chief, Two Knifes, and over a hundred braves close in on them. There is nothing really special about this movie, but I enjoyed it. If you can find a copy for cheap, I recommend it.
Guy Stockwell plays Lt. Malcolm, the leader of the cavalry troop trying to recover a Gatling gun and survive countless Apache attacks. Robert Fuller plays Sneed, a greedy soldier who tries to dispose of the gun with Rev. Harper, John Carradine's character. Barbara Luna stars as Leona, the treacherous reverend's daughter who will do anything to survive. Woody Strode is Runner, the army scout leading the troop through Apache territory. The family travelling along with the troop includes Patrick Wayne as Jim, Pat Buttram as Tin Pot, Phil Harris as Boland, and Judy Jordan as Martha. The Apache chief Two Knives is played by Carlos Rivas. The VHS offers a decent looking copy with colors that fade in and out at certain points in the movie. For an enjoyable western with a good cast and an exciting climax, check out The Gatling Gun!
