Half its members may be dead and its leader may be keeping a low profile, but the Who remains enormously popular. Devotees who haven't availed themselves of Jeff Stein's thrilling, self-mocking 1979 documentary about the group shouldn't wait another minute now that the film has been painstakingly--perhaps heroically--restored to its theatrical-release length from original elements. The sound is clearer than on previous video releases, images are once more crisp and color-rich, and adjustments in tape speed make the Who sound like themselves again, particularly in vintage television performances and filmed club dates from as far back as the band's sonically thrilling, early R&B period. Special features are, shall we say, extensive: 100 or so minutes of multiple-angle footage, an insightful interview with Roger Daltrey, a featurette about the film's restoration, and a mesmerizing, isolated John Entwistle audio track. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars best rock documentary ever.......2007-08-31

This documentary excellently captures the powerful music of The who and all the insanity around them and is a must-see for anyone who wants to have a complete understanding of what made the band so great.

5 out of 5 stars I can not add more detail, but go on record when a company does good.......2007-07-06

It seems that every piece of film from the late 60's, early to mid 70's is
being dug up and being dumped right to DVD. The worst of them not even
bothering to re-mix the 16 track masters to 5.1 and use the original PCM
Stereo 2.0 or worse Mono x 2.

This is not that. This is a full restoration/quality
enhancement/clean-up??, and all out re-engineer of the audio tracks and
the outcome is wonderful, superb. This is a must for every Who fan and
IMHO if it were twice the price at $35, it is easily worth every penny. It
is indeed a true special edition.

If companies released enhanced, remastered versions of classics for DVD
media I would gladly pay twice the price for every one of them over the
normal price of a DVD. Or if every effort is made, but there are still
limitations, that is O.K., I can live with it. But can't stand the lazy
media change only. Arghh.

Enjoy this one! What a treat!

5 out of 5 stars THE TRUE MASTERS OF MOTEL/HOTEL & INSTRUMENT MASS DESTRUCTION........2007-06-10

I will be writing a review on the legendary historic classic Rock n' Roll movie entitled "THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT" starring the true masters of disaster and one of England's pride and joys, T-H-E W-H-O! THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT" was originally released in theaters in 1979 by THE WHO group limited and in this DVD Special Edition in 2003 by Pioneer Entertainment (USA) Inc. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary historic movie or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the overall best informative and most accurate review possible.

THE WHO will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for composing and recording some of Rock's most all-time sacred anthems ever. THE WHO will also forever be remembered for being the true masters of disasters by being the kings of motel/hotel & instrument mass destruction. THE WHO at one time were always known for destroying their instruments at the end of their concert performances. If that wasn't enough, Keith Moon would invent and perfect the art of destroying motel/hotel rooms. Moon would also drive cars into swimming pools not just at the motels/hotels, but at his own home. Moon was also known for throwing furniture as well as television sets either off the top roof or out of his room balcony. This whole Rock n' Roll documentary movie is the story of the real genuine original band THE WHO from the 1960's and the 1970's. THIS IS THE WHO AT THEIR VERY BEST people. There are many stories that were left out of the movie and for a very good reason. There were many Moonie stories that were so crazy and dangerous, that they could not be told on film.

The original WHO members comprising of lead singer and frontman Roger Daltrey, lead and rhythm guitarist Pete Townshend, the late great bassist John Entwistle and the late great mad drummer Keith (Moon The Loon) Moon is what made THE WHO the crazy lunatic legends they would forever always be known and remembered for. In my opinion, Keith (Moon The Loon) moon was not just one of the all-time greatest drummers in Rock n' Roll history, but he was one of the craziest lunatics that ever walked the face of the earth, let alone Rock n' Roll history. I have read three books on Keith Moon alone and let me tell you, its really a wonder that Keith Moon lived as long as he did. Keith Moon should have died in his childhood years and not in his thirties. Keith Moon was the most REAL Rock n' Roll star as they came who really truly lived the Rock n' Roll lifestyle like it was a religion.

Moon was extremely charismatic and had an natural sense of humor. Moon was an extremely funny person. Moon actually loved making people laugh and make them happy. However, Moon had the legendary comedian's disease of being extremely funny on the outside, but extremely unhappy in the inside. And that, my fellow Rock n' Roller's, is what would kill him in the end along with the aid of certain prescribed medications he would overdose on to help him kick his alcohol and drug habits.

In my opinion, when you think about it, its really a wonder that Pete Townshend is still alive and lived to tell about it. Pete Townshend was another Keith Moon until the day Moon died. When Keith Moon died in 1978, the Keith Moon that was instilled in Townshend as well as part of Pete Townshend and alot of THE WHO, would die with him forever. THE WHO would never be the same again after Keith Moon died. PLEASE DON'T GET ME WRONG, I AM NOT KNOCKING THE WHO IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM.

"THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT" is THE WHO and all their glory years. This legendary historic film includes blistering live versions of "My Generation," "I Can't Explain," "Young Man (Blues)," "Baba O' Riley," "A Quick One," "Pinball Wizard," "See Me, Feel Me" and "Won't Get Fooled Again." THE WHO would also deliver fine video performances such as "Happy Jack," "Magic Bus" and "Tommy, Can You Hear Me." THE WHO would also record excellent studio outtakes on the legendary song "Who Are You" from 1978.

Following Keith (Moon The Loon) Moon's untimely death in 1978, THE WHO would carry on magnificently and forever keep Moonie's legend alive and intact. The Who would carry on with former FACES drummer Kenney Jones for a little while but Jones WAS NO KEITH MOON. As a result, Jones would soon leave the band. There would be other drummers afterwards that would follow but they could never replace Keith Moon. In my opinion, THE WHO found the PERFECT drummer and the ONLY drummer that is capable of coming close to filling in Keith Moon's shoes. His name, Zak Starkey, son of Richard Starkey A.K.A. one Ringo Starr.

Zak Starkey has come from the bloodline of perhaps, the most famous drummer that ever lived that played in the greatest band that music ever produced, THE BEATLES. It was also Zak who would always call Keith Moon "Uncle Keith." Rock legend has it that Uncle Keith not only purchased Zak's first drum kit, but Uncle Keith as well as Zak's father Ringo taught young Zak quite a bit about drumming. Zak Starkey brought back the youth and the power of THE WHO one more time. With this in mind, THE WHO was performing at a level not seen or heard since Keith Moon was alive and was doing great until John Entwistle died in 2002 on the eve of beginning their tour in Las Vegas, Nevada. When Entwistle died, alot of what remained in the original WHO would also die with him.

In closing, with Daltrey and Townshend that is left of the original WHO and Zak Starkey behind the drumming helms, THE WHO still has proven to persevere and carry on up to this very day. I, for one, wish them all well and hope that they can carry on forever. I would sure love to see it, wouldn't you? Thanks for reading my review and I truly hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have truly enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also deeply hope that all of you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. THE WHO LIVES! R.I.P. Keith (Moon The Loon) Moon (1946-1978) and John Entwistle (1944-2002). Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever in Rock, John L.

A prime example of the American film noir style that flourished during the 1940s and '50s, The Big Combo is now highly regarded as a stylistic milestone for its innovative use of deep shadows and harsh, singular light sources to define its visual strategy. This look is largely credited to the rule-breaking brilliance of cinematographer John Alton, who turns a standard plot of the era into a richly atmospheric experiment in visual invention. Ignoring conventional approaches to lighting, Alton defines the screen in terms of blackness, often framing characters as silhouettes cast in ominous grays or thick, roiling fogs. Moving from clarity to abstraction with masterful grades in between, Alton's trend-setting style has been celebrated by cinematographers since the film's release in 1955.

The film's plot keeps brisk pace with the visuals, focusing on the obsessive efforts of a tenacious detective (Cornel Wilde) to destroy a sadistic mobster (Richard Conte) whose vicious influence has nearly ruined the life of the woman (Jean Wallace) he keeps under his dark wing. Lee Van Cleef and Earl Holliman are nicely cast as the villain's toady henchmen, and Brian Donlevy's usual limitations serve him well as the humbled, frustrated kingpin who's been stifled by Conte's ambition. Director Joseph H. Lewis previously demonstrated his raw, stylistic vigor with the earlier cult favorite Gun Crazy, and here he's in peak form with a perfect match of subject and sensibility. The result is hard-boiled entertainment that still packs a punch. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Big Combo.......2007-06-26

Lewis's ultra-hard-boiled noir is savage and unstinting in its view of two men, one squarely on the side of the law and the other seemingly above it, locked in a battle of wills that may eventually destroy them both. Conte is particularly repellent as the sadistic Mr. Brown, but he gets excellent support from Brian Donlevy as a stoic, humiliated underling whose hearing aids provide one of the movie's most gruesome plot points. Earl Holliman and Lee Van Cleef are also solid playing Brown's all-too-loyal thugs. Raw and beautifully stylized by John Alton's brilliant use of light, shadow, and slanted angles, "The Big Combo" makes for a bracing night at the movies.

3 out of 5 stars John Alton's cinematography is a classic noir example of what can be done with limited means.......2007-06-14

When the two most interesting scenes involve a hearing aid pulled from Brian Donlevy's ear, I think a good assumption would be that The Big Combo lacks a little something. The plot is simplicity itself. An obsessive cop is determined to bring down a crime boss, come what may. As the cop collects witnesses, the crime boss' two goons turn them into corpses. Eventually, the cop prevails...and maybe even makes a friend of the crime boss' innocent, blond and zaftig girlfriend. In fact, however, I think the Big Combo lacks two big somethings.

First, the movie has a giant, dull center because the two leads, Cornel Wilde and Jean Wallace, are two of the most limited actors Hollywood ever gave star roles to. While Wilde might generously be called a limited actor, Wallace, with her little girl voice and intonations, simply isn't an actor at all. For my money, almost all the actors lack any inherent interest. The implied relationship between the two killers, amusingly played by Lee Van Cleef and Earl Holiman, might have been an inside joke in the Fifties, but it now seems simply an excuse for excessive analysis on Turner Classic Movies. Donlevy, in fact, saddened me. It was disconcerting to see this actor, who had earned major stature in Hollywood in his prime, reduced to playing a broken-down, aging, useless crime boss in a movie of this quickie, low-budget quality.

Second, the dialogue is as flat and stale as yesterday's fried egg. It doesn't power the plot. It doesn't make us sit up because of cleverness or pungency. It's as lifeless as the delivery most of the actors give it, especially Wilde and Wallace. Richard Conte never quite made the A list in Hollywood, but he was always a dynamic and forceful actor, and a good one, too. He's the most animated of any of the actors. His role as the ruthless and smooth Mr. Big, always referred to and addressed as Mr. Brown, gives him more latitude to be interesting than the other players. Yet the silly device of having everyone refer to him only as Mr. Brown brings Conte perilously close to being nothing more than a screenwriter's idea of iconic menace.

What's to like about the movie? Well, the plot is hardly original, yet the idea of a Mr. Big eventually brought down by an obsessed cop while people fall by the wayside is usually satisfying. Most impressively, John Alton, the cinematographer, pulled out all the tricks in his bag to give The Big Combo a great noir look. From dramatic spotlights pinning the bad guy against a wall to the flashes of silent machine guns, from Lee Van Cleef's face looking stark and scary to the opening shots of a woman pursued by two killers through dark shadows and blinding lights, The Big Combo is a pleasure to look at. But if all you can say about a noir is that the lighting was great, that might be faint praise.

1 out of 5 stars Big Dumpo.......2007-05-13

What an utter waste of time. I love old black and white movies, especially film noir, but the lighting is amateurish, the acting is very stiff, the ideas are idiotic (they arrest a woman for murder because she attempts suicide), the makeup is incredibly poor (one man's gray hair looks like it was applied with house paint), the music is suddenly loud for no reason, but the writing should get a special award for stupidity. There is a wandering, nonsensical, and boring plot line that could not be saved with the greatest of actors, and they certainly are not that. Having seen it all the way through, I have no idea what a "Big Combo" is or why anyone wanted to make this movie. It is so bad I will hesitate to order a Big Combo the next time I want fries with my hamburger. I'm actually sorry that I have to give it one star. Stinko!

5 out of 5 stars Great movie, great price!.......2007-04-28

I don't have to repeat everything that others have written-- this is a great movie! I already had the Image DVD when I decided to buy the Geneon PD release for just over a dollar from an Amazon seller to send to a friend. I expected the inexpensive public domain release to be barely watchable. I've had that experience with most of the Alpha DVD's I've purchased. But, THIS Geneon is quite good. Before looking for an out of print Image DVD, check this one out! With shipping, my total cost was under 4 dollars! Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Well-Balanced Biographical Sketch of Barry Goldwater's Political Life.......2007-08-10

I thought the film was very well done. It presented a wide assortment of political and media personalities that were at the forefront of the political scene during the 60s when Goldwater made his bid for the presidency and was overwhelmingly defeated by Lyndon Baines Johnson in November 1964.

Goldwater is best remembered for his failure to vote for the 1964 Civil Rights Act. In fact, he was the only Senator that did not vote for the act.

Goldwater's wife, Peggy, and his children and grandchilderen, including producer C C Goldwater are all my cousins (on my mom's side). I myself was a civil rights leader in my home state of Missouri during my high school years in the 1950s. I was a recognized leader in the civil rights movement from the onset and stuck my neck out time and again for the rights of Negro Americans, as well as for the rights of Latin Americans and Native Americans. I lost a managerial position with the Santa Monica Evening Outlook for standing up for the rights of Negro Americans, Latin Americans and Native Americans. Yet, not one Negro, Latino or Native American stood up for me after I was fired for standing up for what was right and just, for upholding the law. The personnel manager was a Negro woman!

My older brother, an Army veteran, died homeless five years ago at the age of 64. He suffered from the same brain disorder that our cousin Peggy Goldwater suffered from -- which affected his hearing and his balance nerve. Our $2 million Blaise family trusts were left to the First Church of Christ Scientists and the Theosophical Society.

Barry Jr. appeared (on the DVD) to be sniveling over the fact that his own dad didn't seem to ever give him enough time.

When I attempted to contact Barry Jr. at his office in 1972, to discuss my rights and issues as a disabled American veteran, instead of scheduling an appointment, he instead sent the Secret Service to my home to invade my privacy, to intimidate me, to discredit me AND to inform me to never again attempt to contact either him or his dad! He then authored "The Privacy Act" to prevent people like himself from being victimized by the same dirty tricks he played on others. He was such a hypocrite.

America later learned, via the FBI, that Barry Goldwater Jr. was using cocaine while serving in U. S. Congress. He sister and nephew have admitted they smoke marijuana. The Goldwaters are, of course, above the law. They are the chosen people.

By the way, Senator Goldwater admits in his autobiography that he was arrested at the age of 21 for assaulting a Mexican police officer -- by splashing beer in his face. He also admits he forged a check in the name of a certain Mr. Bayless, one of his Army buddies for his $25 bail. Bayless, who later came to own one of Arizona's largest grocery chains, did not bring criminal charges against Goldwater for forgery. He instead framed the forged check and hung it over his desk for the world to see the true character of Barry Goldwater.

As I said, it's a well-edited DVD. Be sure and buy it. C C Goldwater reportedly spent a lot of money [around $800,000] to produce it.

4 out of 5 stars An Old School Conservative.......2007-07-29

This is a surprising film. I did not know much about Barry Goldwater, I am ashamed to say, beyond his reputation as an ultra-conservative. He was, but in the sense of a true conservative.

Goldwater was for strong national defense and was an ardent anti-Communist. He was also Pro-Choice and definitley not a friend of the Religious Right. Goldwater's main political guiding logic was that government should not meddle in people's lives any more than is necessary.

Barry was against the Civil Rights Act of 1964. He thought it amounted to too much government intrusion. He criticised the Religious Right on numerous occassions and said religion had not place in politics, and that crossing that line resulted, again, in too much government intrusion.

Goldwater also was close friends with JFK. They were often opponents, on opposite sides of political issues. But they still admired each other greatly and socialized often.

Seeing this film left me with a great admiration for Barry Goldwater. In these days of polarized partisan politics and wedge issues, I wish we had someone in DC with Barry Goldwater's strength of character to focus on the real issues and the courage to reach across the aisle for true and meaningful dialogue.

Dark, unsettling, and intriguing, Paranoia Agent confirms Satoshi Kon's position as one of the most interesting directors currently working in Japan. A baseball bat-wielding adolescent randomly attacks five people in Tokyo, each of whom is grappling with a serious problem. Toy designer Tsukiko endures tremendous pressure to repeat her previous success; bottom-feeding journalist Kawazu desperately needs money. Popular sixth grader Yuuichi feels threatened by the new kid in his class, the dumpy nerd Usshi. Yuuichi's tutor Harumi is a compassionate scholar by day; at night, she becomes Maria, a sleazy hooker. The seemingly purposeless violence of Lil' Slugger (originally Shounen Bat, literally "Bat Boy"), also disrupts the lives of police detectives Maniwa and Karino, and their corrupt boss Hirukawa. As he did in Perfect Blue, Kon deliberately blurs the boundaries between reality and fantasy: Does Tsukikio's stuffed toy really talk to her? Which is Harumi's true personality? A noteworthy series from an important artist. This set includes all four volumes of the series. (Rated 16 and older: violence, sexual situations, brief nudity, alcohol and tobacco use) --Charles Solomon

Description

"When the darkness overcomes the heart, Little Slugger appears...." After the first victim's story, the police felt the overly stressed woman was having a breakdown and lied to cover-up for some crime. However, after the third and fourth attacks upon unrelated victims led to the same description of a young attacker with a golden baseball bat and in-line skates, the police had to wonder- is the "Lil' Slugger" real or a sinister phantom? Box Set contains all four volumes in series.

4 out of 5 stars Prepare your brain for some twisting........2007-09-10

This series basically chronicles a descent into madness, so deep that it seeps out into the real world.

Each episode is very different from the last, all done in different styles, and with different kinds of stories, but they all tie in together remarkably. It is well produced, well animated, and well directed.

It can be confusing as you watch it, but that just makes it more engaging.

Original. Sometimes frightening. Sometimes funny. High quality. It's a wonderful series.

The price is a smidge high for what is really one season of episodes, but it's originality makes me feel like I've gotten my money's worth.

4 out of 5 stars One of the best psycological thrillers I seen........2007-09-03

Finally something else deserving of much needed hype. Paranoia Agent is a very dark piece of art that trys several elements and for the most part its all hit. I was never confused the entire time watching this. I was just mesmerized by the story being told. Especially the first 7 episodes. This anime to me examined the human mind in a way most anime rarely touch. The only one that comes close or even surpasses this to me is Boogie Pop Phantom.

I'm going to try my best not to include spoilers. This is something people should watch with an open mind and have very little knowledge of the overall story being told.

Paranoia Agent is based on a boy called Lil' Slugger who attacks certain people with a bent up baseball bat on roller blades. The police of course get involved to try and capture this criminal. After several more random attacks and interviewing victims as well as eyewitnesses. The detectives come to somewhat of a truth about the person's identity.

This anime focuses on several dark themes. Such as a boy with a very bad "all eyes on me" type of complex. To include a woman who lives a double life. The stories are pretty deep. There's also one episode when a a group of women are sharing their stories and stories by word of mouth on Lil Slugger. This episode is one of my favorites and is just funny to me. Because this type of attitude is exactly like real life. In fact what I like about this even more is that I actually know people like this. Just yesterday I was listening in on a conversation and the women talking sounded exactly like this group of women in the show. Another standout episode for me was when the ex detective's wife confronted Lil Slugger. The way this episode carried through was just brilliant. Lil Slugger's reactions to her story. He wanted to kill her so bad but he couldn't touch her due to her very strong will to live(at least thats the way it appeared to me). When she gave in for just a second he was able to graze her with his bat. I apologize for giving away this much info.

There really wasn't too much not to like about this series. I do have some gripes. I really didn't like the 8th episode. And I believe its episode 10, I wasn't crazy about simply because it was narrated several times by that little pink dog with a very annoying voice to include the cute little song that kept coming up. I also didn't care for the soundtrack. I also didn't care for some of the events leading up to the end or the ending itself. Alot of people loved it but some don't. Even though with these negatives(to most they won't be negatives at all) its still an almost perfect series.

This is not an anime everybody can enjoy. If your overall taste is lots of blood, action, and gore. Then this might not be for you. I also won't say if your a fan of DBZ then you'll hate this. Thats just stupid to say because I love DBZ and I enjoyed this. If your a fan of Satoshi Kon's work, then check this out. It's the best I've seen.

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC........2007-05-21

TO MAKE THE LONG STORY SHORT, BUY THIS BOX SET AND BELIEVE ME YOU WON'T REGRET IT. PLEASE UNDERSTAND THAT THIS SHOW IS VERY COMPLICATED AND INTRICATE. WATCH IT TWICE TO COMPREHEND THIS BEAUTY.

3 out of 5 stars seen better.......2007-03-25

there are quite a few things i like about this title. good ideas, things that crack me up and social truths that come out in this.
all in all it gets pretty boring though. after a few episodes the excitement over the angle of this show fades and it just kind of drags on with the occasional perk here and there.

5 out of 5 stars paranoia agent.......2007-01-19

I found this box set by accident when I was looking for some anime. Having now watched it I'm glad I did find it. In it's entiraty it's like 4 seperate anime's which have been interlinked. I would recommend this to fans of any anime. Also invest in the american version.

5 out of 5 stars A Tight Little Story.......2006-11-06

It's Hitchcock like in it's presentation that admits you into a very short segment of our hero's life, but one momentous enough to change his life forever. I also like being fooled by the story teller into reaching for the wrong conclusions before all is finally made known to me. A good yarn, as Mark Twain might say. William Bendix does a great job of sustaining the suspense throughout the film.

5 out of 5 stars My Kind of movie!!!.......2006-03-14

I really enjoyed this flick. Had me guessing all the way. This film is very enjoyable...with just enough suspense and twists to keep you enthralled, while giving you a wonderful picture of 1940 small town America...complete with old homes, good manners and old fashioned Christmas tress. If you love good old movies that you can really enjoy and that leave you with a good feeling when they're through...buy this movie and you won't be sorry?

3 out of 5 stars Not Film Noir.......2006-01-18

You may be disappointed with this film if you are expecting classic American film noir. It's more of a 1940s version of Matlock or Murder, She Wrote. As others have pointed ot, the cover has nothing to do with this film. The cover scene leads one to believe it's film noir (the title certainly suggests the genre) and my guess is that it was done on purpose to mislead for sales purposes. Considering the cost, I felt that I had my money's worth. The picture is clear (though not a restored print) and the film itself is entertaining. William Bendix is never bad performance wise. To me, he's one of the most likeable character actors the American cinema ever produced. If you see this film, I'm sure you'll be entertained. If you don't see it, you'll not have missed anything in my view.

4 out of 5 stars A Sweet-Natured, Friendly Murder Mystery In A Small Town.......2006-01-13

Can a murder mystery be sweet-natured? Yes, when it's Cover-Up, a well-crafted B movie programer put together by experienced pros.

Insurance investigator Sam Donovan (Dennis O'Keefe, who co-wrote the script) arrives in a small town a few days before Christmas to look into the apparent suicide of an intensely disliked resident. The man has left a $20,000 insurance policy with a double indemnity clause. Sam points out to Sheriff Larry Best (William Bendix) that if murder happened the policy will pay $40,000. The sheriff is friendly but unhelpful. "Look, Sam," he says, "take my advice. Don't be so all fired anxious to pay double indemnity on this case. Why don't you forget about it? Go on home."

The sheriff says it was suicide, but there was no gun by the corpse, no powder burns and, at first, he denies a bullet was even found. Sam starts poking around, but everyone says it had to be suicide even though any number of the townspeople had motive. The dead man, the sheriff says, "was a blight on the whole community." Sam meets Anita Weatherby (Barbara Britton), the daughter of the town's banker. They start to get serious, but she wants him to stop looking, especially when her father might be involved. Sam, however, doesn't like murder and keeps pushing the case. He finally sets a clever trap, figures out the identity of the murderer...and has to make a tough decision. Let's just say the movie takes place over Christmas and Sam makes the right decision.

This is a well-crafted look at a friendly small town. Main Street has two-story brick shops with the bus depot on the corner. The houses have wide porches and picket fences in front. People don't lock their front doors. The big event will soon be the lighting of the community Christmas tree in the town square, with everyone bundled up in scarves and coats and there'll be presents for all the kids. Don't fool yourself, though. There are plenty of suspects.

The actors, especially William Bendix and Dennis O'Keefe, do fine jobs. Bendix gives Sheriff Best just enough complexity that you're never sure what his game is, or whether he's just being friendly or something more sinister. O'Keefe plays the big city investigator with a nice mixture of toughness and puzzlement. He wants to catch the murderer, but he's come to like many of the people, including the banker's daughter, and he's increasingly reluctant to hurt anyone. Dora Merande, one of Hollywood's great character actresses, does a memorable job as the Weatherby's astringent but caring maid.

And as to that last decision Sam must make when he's discovered the murderer? He has to take a moment or two to think about things. "Like the sheriff is so fond of saying," he finally tells those with him in the murderer's living room, "I'm not much of a detective."

To avoid confusion, remember that the photo on the DVD cover has no connection to the movie. For some reason, someone pulled a scene from a completely different film to use. The DVD is bare bones. While there are chapter stops, there is no menu and no extras. The picture and audio are better than I would have expected. The movie is easy to watch if you're not a perfectionist.

5 out of 5 stars I WAS IMPRESSED.......2005-12-30

If you liked "T-Men" or "Raw Deal" I think you'll like this movie. Granted, the insurance sub plot is odd and not explanined very well, but Dennis O'Keefe really shines. William Bendix is suprisingly good.

The image and sound quality is great Geneon [Pioneer] ver.

Keith Carradine and Annette O'Toole star in this historical family drama adapted from the Newbery Honor novel, The Sign of the Beaver, by Elizabeth George Speare. It's 1768, and a colonial family is seeking a new life in the wilderness of Maine. The father must reluctantly leave 13-year-old Matt alone in the wilderness to hold the land claim until he can return with the rest of the family. When the family is detained for months by a deadly epidemic, Matt's chances of survival become slimmer and slimmer. He is saved by the Penobscot Indians, who teach him survival skills and lessons of trust and friendship. An excellent cast, fine script, and gripping story make this an ideal film for the whole family. It can also spark discussions about the values of loyalty, life in colonial times, and the Indians' forced evacuation of their lands. Alternate video title: The Sign of the Beaver. --Elisabeth Keating

Description

Keith Carradine and Annette O'Toole star in this powerful family drama adapted from the best-selling novel "The Sign Of The Beaver" by Elizabeth George Speare that's become required reading in schools throughout the country. But their hopes, dreams, and very survival as a family are severely tested when the father reluctantly leaves his 13-year-old son, Matt, alone in the wilderness to protect their claim until he can return with the rest of the family and their belongings. Weeks of waiting turn into months, and months into seasons, as his family struggles against a deadly epidemic and other hardships in their journey to rejoin their boy. Young Matt's ability to survive his lonely and dangerous vigil becomes more questionable with each passing day...until he's befriended by a band of Penobscot Indians. The experience transforms Matt as his Indian benefactors teach him life's most important lessons about survival, trust, loyalty and hope. First seen on the CBS Television Network as a Clorox Diamond Presentation. Keeping the Promise is a movie based on the children's novel, Sign of the Beaver, by Elizabeth George Speare. I'm a teacher, so I have my students read the book, then we watch the movie and compare the two. It is a good family movie with a positive message. My students enjoy watching it every year!

What I loved about this book is that there are so many details so you know what you are reading. You can really visualize the story and have so many adventures reading this exciting new book.

4 out of 5 stars A DIFFERENT KIND OF MOVIE.......2007-05-10

THIS IS REALLY A WEIRD MOVIE!IT CERTAINLY IS DIFFERENT.IT'S NOTHING AT ALL WHAT YOU EXPECT IT TO BE LIKE.YOU'LL BE SURPRISED.YOU CAN'T HELP BUT KEEP WATCHING IT BECAUSE IT'S SO STRANGE-YOU WANT TO KNOW WATS GOING TO HAPPEN NEXT.

2 out of 5 stars maybe baby.......2007-01-13

as a strange curio this film works rather well. it plays like a tv movie even though it was supposedly a feature film release. a good cast of actresses come togather for this tale. anjanette comer, ruth roman, marianne hill. the movie has an eerie feel to it, leaving you a little uncomfortable at times. dont want to give any of the plot away except to say the baby.....isn't. some good suspense. not a horror movie. so for good old b movie fun the baby will get you rattled.

5 out of 5 stars Baby.A classic........2006-11-03

I saw this film years ago and it left so many memories in my head.I tried for years to track it down. What didnt help my search was the misguided belief that Joan Crawford was the mother of Baby.A chance stumble upon the name of Ruth Roman Threw this baby(pardon the pun)to light. It is a bizarre and truly original movie.I prize my dvd collection and have over 2,000 titles, all original, with so many cinema classics from Blade runner to The Godfather to the Big Lebowski....but I can confirm that this movie, for its sheer originality and Ruth Roman, will sit proudly alongside them.
The dvd itself has no menu..it just starts straight into the opening credits. But the image quality is good as is the sound.Get the movie and enjoy it with friends or by yourself and it certainly will leave its mark. Its a coup getting it.Rock on Baby.

2 out of 5 stars Goo goo.......2006-07-15

A very strange film about a seemingly (physcially) normal adult male who has the mentality of a baby - he's looked after by his mother and two sisters who treat him as a baby.

Then a social worker takes an interest in the case. She has certain 'designs' on him, but not like one of his sisters who casually gets in his cot one evening for a bit of a quickie - obviously he's all adult physically - but this scene is not very explicit and rather quick.

4 out of 5 stars Tenjho Tenge Round Eight.......2007-03-09

The movie was awesome. Though it does seem that it ended rather early. I say this because as soon as there was a break through and after all the back ground you would think it would involve much more twist to the end or a deeper plot but it basically ends good guy wins bad guy loses. I believe if the story continued a little longer exploring the new developments and the extent of it that it would have been better, a lot better. However, the story came to a close as soon as it really got interesting. Sorry if it's not too helpfull I'm not into spoilers.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-02-14

Alright.... I love the series but Im begging for more. It just wasn't the greatest thing being left open like that at the end with a feeling of there could be more... Although the series ends with an unfinished note it still a great peice of work and should definately be looked into.

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-02-07

I love the whole collection, but i wish they kept going. At least a second season... But it was worth it... Love it ..... Wait until it's cheaper then you should get it....

I recommend it..

5 out of 5 stars A Classic Fan-Service Anime.......2007-05-14

Many attractive girls bouncing around in skimpy clothing, that's what Girl's Bravo is all about. And if that's all you're expecting, then you will fully enjoy Girl's Bravo. In addition to the fan-service there is some good drama, many funny circumstances, and a great cast of characters.

If you are a lover of fan-service anime then Girls Bravo absolutely must be a part of your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Good but not great.......2007-04-22

This series is a pretty good Anime, it has nonstop comedy and a ton of fanservice. It may be a harem Anime, but it also is quite good. Yes the main character is a loser and yes he is allergic to girls. But you notice that he ignores it cause he really wants to be with Miharu. This show actually has some Mud Wrestling in Episode 14, though its quick. It will leave you wanting more, it has a decent ending. I must say that it is better than the other review says.

2 out of 5 stars fan service without a story.......2007-04-06

This series is just painful. The story is cookiecutter Harem anime without much originality. THe main character is a loser as usual but has an allergy to girls and guess what? he gets surrounded by girls. Then there are the annoying rivals who are just over the top to the point of irritation. This series really doesn't have much of a story other than to provide a lot of fan service ad when i say a lot, i mean a lot. There is way too much sexual innuendo going on (as seen with the main girl eating a banana.) This fan service goes on so much that it takes its price by taking away from character development and depth.

Again you have episodes that can be found in all of this genre and you have similar humor. What is worse, there is a story put in but it doesn't show up until the last disc and creates one of the worst endings in anime. It is so bad that you will feel insulted and be glad to be done with the series instead of left wanting more.

I give it 2 stars because some of the stories are fairly funny but those moments are few and far between. I would recommend skipping this series and finding soemething better

Based on the manga Shin Read or Die by Hideyuki Kurata and Ran Ayanaga, the broadcast series R.O.D. (2003) offers a storyline so convoluted and bizarre, it makes Evangelion look like a reality show. Novelist Nenene Sumiregawa hasn't written anything in four years--since her friend Yomiko Readman (the heroine of the 2001 OVA) disappeared. When terrorists attack Nenene in Hong Kong, her publisher hires sisters Michele, Maggie, and Anita as bodyguards. Like Yomiko, they're "paper masters," with the magical ability to forge powerful weapons out ordinary foolscap. Once Nenene appears safe, they undertake perilous missions for the mysterious Dokusensha organization. Their sorties lead them into a grandiose plot for world domination organized by the British Library that involves cloning, human genetic experiments, resurrection, mass brain washing, time-shifting, and paranormal abilities.

Hideyuki Karata's muddled screenplay defeats director Koji Masunari's attempts to present a coherent story visually. Episode 14 is basically one long, static Morris-the-Explainer scene, in which a character outlines the weird backstory. There's so much plot to get through and it takes so many weird turns, the characters remain underdeveloped, a problem their tendency to withdraw into brooding silences exacerbates. The heroines' ability to meld paper into weapons, vehicles, and animal-like automatons offers some imaginative visuals, but they get lost in a welter of more ordinary CG effects. R.O.D. has its fans, but it's a series that requires considerable patience and determination to get through. (Rated 13 and older: violence, violence against women, toilet humor, nudity, ethnic stereotypes, alcohol and tobacco use) --Charles Solomon

5 out of 5 stars most inventive use of paper ever!.......2007-09-09

I have nothing bad to say about this show. the concept is orginal and great. Who could have know that control over paper could be so useful. You think How bad can a paper cut be, but then you see someone cuts off the wings to an Jet liner with paper...

5 out of 5 stars Quite Interesting and Original.......2007-03-21

I agree very much with the previous reviewer A. Schneider insofar as I too believe this to be well animated for a Japanese TV series, very good character development and high quality artistry. Each episode is generally a stand alone story and these vary from moderately interesting to extremely well written. While there are the usual adolescent nods in the production (magic, self possessed sub or early teens), there is are also quite deep psychological insights and values that slip from the screen writers' pens that make these episodes more than the original idea. I highly recommend this series for the serious collector.

5 out of 5 stars Fun, touching, and beautifully done.......2006-08-13

An anime with a strong story arc for adults. The very odd title doesn't represent it, the artsy geisha nudes don't quite fit with the personality of the screenplay. What you get are four girl action super-heros that seem like real people, vulnerable and often silly until a crisis hits and then they are serious business.

The three Paper Sisters are Michelle (oldest, bubbly, blonde, very feminine), then Maggie (taciturn, stoic, strong, and tall), and then 13-year-old Anita (tomboy, combative, smart). They have powers over paper, turning it into shields, weapons, and familiars.

The story is about their odd jobs that they use to support themselves, the chief of which is to act as bodyguard for the an unwilling Japanese author by the name of Nenene.

For whatever flaws it has, it generates in most episodes truly memorable moments. If you liked Buffy the Vampire Slayer (TV) you will like this just as much. Those that complain about the pacing and the "wandering" of the plot either just missing the point, or missing the kind of anime that has a money-shot of something blowing up or getting whacked every 90 seconds.

The action when it happens is great, but not what is best about ROD. Very few animes are worth five stars, and this is one of them.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Brilliant. A must-see, and a definite buy!.......2006-04-05

I was totally shocked to have recieved my order so early! 3-4 days earlier than the actual "Delivery Estimate"! I have no regrets buying from digital_image. And I got the "Perfect Collection" DVD set (R.O.D - The TV Series - The Complete Set) for $100 less than the actual price. Even though it didn't come in the "box" cover thing, it didn't bother me.

The series in general is just absolutely amazing. So creative, and imaginative. I love it. And expect all the DVD's to be in English. Because for some reason I thought I would have to be reading English subtitles throughout all 26 shows.

Basically: I love it!

Jay.
