Some called it a snooze-fest, while others tearfully clutched their Kleenex. In any case, Clint Eastwood was an unusual and (as it turned out) perceptive choice to direct and costar in this lush adaptation of Robert James Waller's phenomenally bestselling novel. Meryl Streep costars as Francesca, the lonely Iowa farmer's wife who is instantly attracted to Robert (Eastwood), the photographer from National Geographic who is in the area to photograph the bridges along Iowa's rural roadways. The two fall in love while Francesca's husband and children are away at a county fair, but the story's passion and lasting appeal derive from their decision to part forever after just a few brief days of intimate connection. Superbly acted with an emphasis on quiet, graceful moments of tender revelation, the film builds to a crescendo of powerful and conflicting emotions. Like David Lean's Brief Encounter (to which it bears marked similarities), The Bridges of Madison County is destined to become one of the classic movie love stories. --Jeff Shannon

Wonderful love story.......2007-09-09
When I went to see this movie in the theatre years ago, I was so sure that I wasn't going to like this film. There was a loud rumbling in the romance community about this story being written by a man. At the time there were a lot of them. This one, Message in a Bottle and a Walk to Remember shortly after. So there I was in all my huffy glory, glaring at the screen. But all that nonesense was forgotten as this wonderful story started to unfold. Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep had me smiling and melting in this forbidden love story in no time flat. By the time we reach the scene where Eastwood is standing in the middle of the street during a rain down pour, I was begging her to get out the car. Run, girl. Run to your true soul mate! Ah, amour. So despite my prejudices I fell helplessly in love with this story--and you will too. Highly recommended.
BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY.......2007-08-28
I own all of Eastwood movies.Including..Rawhide series. All his motion pictures are widescreen...all! What about'.....Madison County?Who in the world didn't stop to think..this too should be in widescreen..to get the whole pictureSCOPE of this great Romatic future classic.I do have it also on Laser Disc.& it's in widescreen.I just run a print to a blank dvd for now.
Come on you people who sell these movies..if nothing else...put both versions on dvd. They do that you know?
Loved This Movie ,Made Me Cry.......2007-08-25
I wasn't sure I would like this movie since I had already read the book and fell in love with this story.
I'll have to admit Clint Eastwood & Merle Streep did a beautiful job. There were parts that were left out of course but all in all a very good movie, still the book was much better and left me wanting more.
Too bad there cannot be a sequel since both characters are now deceased.
The only part I did not like was the beginning where her children found the story of her love story. I hated the actions of the son or maybe it was the actor.
Crud story, glorifying adultery - disgusting trash.......2007-08-15
This movie makes me sick. Basically it's a movie about a woman who betrays her marriage vows, betrays her husband, betrays her children. It's a movie about a man that commits sin by persuing a sexual relationship with a married woman. The first time I watched this movie (and the last) I found myself hoping the husband would come home and catch the two in the act. He would have been justified in kicking the snot out the filthy no good womanizer. There's no repentance for sin in this movie, no confession of guilt. Heck, for all we know the wicked man gave the married woman a mean case of the herps and then moved on to the next town where he did it all over again (that's the way these people are) How many marriages have been wrecked by this type of thing? And they throw it up on the big screen and package it as a love story? No, it's not a love story. It's a story of human depravity at its worst. If this movie had been advertised as such, I would give it 5 stars for it displays wickedness of unrepentant human hearts in grand fashion. But since this movie tries to pass itself off as a romantic interlude between two lonely adults.. uh uh. It's just horrible, new age agenda laden, anti-christian schlock. Avoid it unless you enjoy throwing up in disgust.
It only takes one love to complete the journey ..........2007-07-22
This review is dedicated to the boy who once slugged his subject line "To the girl who wisely wouldn't date me in the `60s." A road less traveled out of fear for the unknown can seem like your downfall. But, harbor no regrets. In fact there are paths we take to help fill the void. As trite as this may sound, one of those paths can be a great movie. "The Bridges of Madison County" has become both a life-saving tool (a bit dramatic) and an obsession for me. The DVD places its two main characters, brilliantly acted out by Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep, into a state of infinite thoughts that transcend all boundaries. In his novel, Robert James Waller poignantly describes the fuse used to shape a lifetime of bliss in just four days, scenes the DVD expertly portrays and brings to life. Directed by Clint Eastwood, this epic tale is a much-needed time warp to a better place through the eyes of Francesca Johnson and Robert Kincaid, who share a passion for common ground that only comes along once.

Waking Life is a film that never settles down. Or maybe it never wakes up. Regardless, Richard Linklater's animated meditation seems to strike a perfect balance between the plotless meanderings of Slacker and the unquenchable knowledge-seeking of Hermann Hesse's Siddhartha. Any way you look at it, this is a weird, original movie.
As he attempts to figure out what separates dreams from reality, the protagonist (Dazed and Confused's Wiley Wiggins) hears an earful from everyone he stumbles upon. Ramblings range from the scholarly (Linklater's former college professor Robert C. Solomon gives a monologue) to the banal (of which there are plenty). Ethan Hawke, Julie Delpy, Steven Soderbergh, and Adam Goldberg all get animated cameos, basically playing themselves. The dream-centered dialogues eventually grow mind-numbing, but that's OK; the animation steals the show. Each frame of the movie, which was first shot with live actors, was painted over, and the process renders a distorted and trippy collage of sights and sounds. Linklater's film is ultimately quite poignant, but, as with any good journey, you'll need to sit through some fairly tedious moments before reaching the destination. --Jason Verlinde
Description
From the director of Slacker and Dazed and Confused comes one of the most imaginative animated features ever made. This funny, ingenious film, which Rolling Stone Magazine calls "nothing short of amazing," explores the fascinating question: "Are we sleep-walking through our waking state or wake- walking through our dreams"? Join Wiley Wiggins as he searches for answers to lifes most important questions in a world that may or may not be reality in the "most visually alive movie of the year." (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun Times)

Eye-opening. Wake up and watch........2007-09-09
Now, here's something you don't see every day. Waking Life is a movie that isn't afraid to be smart, but it manages to be sexy at the same time. And the painstakingly crafted visuals are guaranteed to keep you watching long enough to - gasp! - actually have an original thought or two by the time you're all done.
Imagine you're dreaming, and you know you're dreaming, but you can't seem to wake up. What would you do? In the world of Waking Life, you'd free your mind, that's what. The twenty or so teachers you'll encounter here each have a unique message to share. You'll meditate on death, contemplate the future of human evolution, and reject your plateau. And if you do get around to waking up, things may never be the same.
If you're into movies where the person who changes the most at the end is you and not the protagonist, you won't wanna miss Waking Life.
It's a series of holy moments, if you're looking closely.
Interesting times with Waking Life.......2007-08-23
This movie was originaly recommended to me by a college friend while discussing mild-altering experiences. After seeing it, I now understand why. This movie is an exercise in expanding your mind. It's pretty much one long trip through different "conversations" the main character is pressumably having regarding how we view our world and what that means. We're never sure exactly how these conversations are taking place and why the main character moves from person to person, but each one tells us something about how we understand our waking/dreaming time. Again, as this movie was recommended during conversations about shrooms and pot, I wasn't sure what to expect but now I have to thank my friend. If you've ever wondered about reality and dreams, this movie shows you you're not alone. It also puts forth some pretty convincing arguments in between interesting stories about life's little quirks.
Something like a daydream.......2007-07-22
If you enjoy hearing folks wax philosophical and don't mind spacey visuals, you may enjoy this film. Here is a sample from Robert Solomon:
"The reason why I refuse to take existentialism as just another French fashion or historical curiosity is that I think it has something very important to offer us for the new century. I'm afraid we're losing the real virtues of living life passionately, in the sense of taking responsibility for who you are, the ability to make something of yourself, and feeling good about life. Existentialism is often discussed as if it's a philosophy of despair. But I think the truth is just the opposite. Sartre, once interviewed, said he never really felt a day of despair in his life. But one thing that comes out from reading these guys is not a sense of anguish about life so much as a real kind of exuberance, of feeling on top of it. Its like: your life is yours to create.
"I've read the postmodernists with some interest, even admiration. But when I read them I always have this awful nagging feeling that something absolutely essential is getting left out. The more that you talk about a person as a social construction or as a confluence of forces or as fragmented or marginalized, what you do is you open up a whole new world of excuses. And when Sartre talks about responsibility he's not talking about something abstract. He's not talking about the kind of self or soul that theologians would argue about. It's something very concrete. It's you and me talking, making decisions, doing things, and taking the consequences.
"It might be true that there are six billion people in the world and counting, nevertheless, what you do makes a difference. It makes a difference first of all in material terms. It makes a difference to other people. And it sets an example. And in short I think the message here is that we should never simply write ourselves off and see ourselves as the victim of various forces. It's always _our_ decision who we are."
Merily merily merily merily, life is but a dream... ok, great, we get it........2007-07-21
Robert Solomon has a very small part in this film and it wasn't enough to save the movie. Check out any of his books or teachings in The Teaching Company (TTC) series. He is one of the greatest teachers of existentialism. But this movie is based around one question... What is reality? Instead of leaving me with questions of What is it to exist? I was left with the questions, "why did I watch this movie" "did I expect it to get better?" "how did it get worse", and "how did anyone get anything deeper out of this movie than "Space Balls?"
This movie is a high school philosophy project based off of the movie "Open Your Eyes," or the americanized version (just as good) "Vanilla Sky." (except I don't remember if you get to see Penelope Cruz naked in Vanilla Sky;)
Honestly... if you want to watch a movie about philosophy or that will at least leave you with existential or profound questions/answers, please check out the following: What the Bleep, Big Fish, Adaptation, Fight Club, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (which is drenched with Sartre) Dark City, or as I just suggested, Open Your Eyes. As far as other philosophies... Moralism/Responsibility, check out: The Cider House Rules or Babel. For Futurism/Postmodernity: Brazil, 12 Monkeys or Children of Men.
There are a lot of great movies out there... don't waste your time on this one. It sucks beyond all understanding... it's one philosophical accomplishment.
Typical of Linklater....talky, uneven, occasionally insightful, occasionally banal and tiresome..........2007-06-16
I like Richard Linklater more as a person than a filmmaker. Here is a good example of his work. The ideas put forth are interesting and necessary, but the film overall is very ponderous, talky (almost all of Linklater's films are talky), pseudo-intellectual (like his generation, Gen X), and kind of boring in spots. The conversations veer from passable to banal, and the rotoscoping, while interesting, isn't really groundbreaking. Rotoscoping has been done for quite some time, but it looks better than it used to, because of digital technology. The film is average. I like Linklater's intelligence and ambition, and he's very personable in interviews, but his work is usually disappointing. It's not terrible, but it's not as good as it can be.

Featuring a blowzy, winningly inept size-12 heroine, Bridget Jones's Diary is a fetching adaptation of Helen Fielding's runaway bestseller, grittier than Ally McBeal but sweeter than Sex and the City. The normally sylphlike Renée Zellweger (Nurse Betty, Me, Myself and Irene) wolfed pasta to gain poundage to play "singleton" Bridget, a London-based publicist who divides her free time between binge eating in front of the TV, downing Chardonnay with her friends, and updating the diary in which she records her negligible weight fluctuations and romantic misadventures of the year. Things start off badly at Christmas when her mother tries to set her up with seemingly standoffish lawyer Mark Darcy (Colin Firth), whom Bridget accidentally overhears dissing her. Instead she embarks on a disastrous liaison with her raffish boss, Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant, infinitely more likeable when he's playing a baddie instead of his patented tongue-tied fops). Eventually, Bridget comes to wonder if she's let her pride prejudice her against the surprisingly attractive Mr. Darcy.
If the plot sounds familiar, that's because Fielding's novel was itself a retelling of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, whose romantic male lead is also named Mr. Darcy. An extra ironic poke in the ribs is added by the casting of Firth, who played Austen's haughty hero in the acclaimed BBC adaptation of Austen's novel. First-time director Sharon Maguire directs with confident comic zest, while Zellweger twinkles charmingly, fearlessly baring her cellulite and pulling off a spot-on English accent. Like Four Weddings and a Funeral and Notting Hill (both of which were written by this film's coscreenwriter, Richard Curtis), Bridget Jones's stock-in-trade is a very English self-deprecating sense of humor, a mild suspicion of Americans (especially if they're thin and successful), and a subtly expressed analysis of thirtysomething fears about growing up and becoming a "smug married." The whole is, as Bridget would say, v. good. --Leslie Felperin
Description
Academy Award(R) winner Renée Zellweger (Best Supporting Actress, COLD MOUNTAIN, 2003; CHICAGO) and Hugh Grant (LOVE ACTUALLY, TWO WEEKS NOTICE) star in a delightful comedy about the ups and downs of modern romance. Bridget (Zellweger), a busy career woman, decides to turn over a new page in her life by channeling her thoughts, opinions and insecurities into a journal that becomes a hilarious chronicle of her adventures. Soon she becomes the center of attention between a guy who's too good to be true (Grant) and another who's so wrong for her, he could be just right (Colin Firth -- LOVE ACTUALLY)! Based on the best-selling book, BRIDGET JONES'S DIARY is another acclaimed crowd-pleaser from the hit makers of FOUR WEDDING AND A FUNERAL and NOTTING HILL.
Customer Reviews:
There is hope for the chick flick genre after all.......2007-07-18
Many were irked when Rene Zellwiger was chosen to play Bridget Jones, her being an American (let alone a native Texan) when Bridget is an English heroine. Still, she puts forth a good performance, as so many things are universal.
Bridget Jones is a thirtysomething single woman living in London, struggling with the trials and tribulations a la Woody Allen crossed with Cathy from the comics. She has to loose that weight, stop drinking so much, quit smoking, and find that intangible Mr. Right. As opposed to all the shallow, self serving female characters in most chick flicks, we related to Bridget best. She is sweet, trying her hardest and making efforts, and her bumbling antics make us laugh as much as they make us cry, knowing we have all been there at one point or another.
In a classic Jane Austinesque situation (and one of the male leads just happens to be named Darcy on top of that), Bridget finds herself torn between two men. On Christmas Day at her mother's annual party, she meets a vain, arrogant, rude man named Mark Darcy who her mother is pushing her into being friendly with. When she overhears one of his insults, she is bent into thinking what a terrible man she is and is naturally, as Miss Austin would be proud of (no pun intended), prejudiced against him. At work, she is hot for her boss, a slick, charming skirt played very well by Hugh Grant (when he is usually the lovable good guy in all his roles). In a moment of weakness, Bridget gets played. (Who hasn't been there?) She soon finds out that Hugh Grant is not just a player, but contrary to what she had been lead to believe, he was caught mid coitus with Mark's wife and not vice versa. In a great scene that we women can only dream about, the two get into a fist fight on the streets over her.
And Mr. Darcy ... He's the perfect man after all. Even when he finds her diary with all its stabs and slams against him, he goes out and buys her a new one. He knows he's not perfect and loves Bridget just the way she is. Isn't that what we all want? And he even likes those nasty granny panties she wore.
I love this.......2007-06-11
I love this movie! First of all I adore Hugh Grant, and his wit hits a homerun in this movie. But, I am a huger Zellweger and Firth fan as well.
Who does not love the way Bridget seems to always mock, and humiliate herself, yet win people over in an instant. She's a true underdog, but a loveable character looking for love...and bullocks....trouble, and moritifying moments always seem to find her. I can watch this movie any day of the week and laugh. Plus, it has a great soundtrack.
This movie is a classic .......2007-06-08
You don't have to be into chick flicks to appreciate this movie. I personally am not into the serious romance movies. This one made me laugh, tugged at my heart strings, and made me sigh. I believe this is one of Renee Zellweger's best performances. I never had a crush on Colin Firth until I saw this movie. His performance was outstanding along side with Hugh Grant's whose wit had me in stiches. The sequel was also a fabulous movie that I have yet to purchase. I also like the deleted scenes and take outs at the main menu. A DVD you must add to your collection. You will never tire of seeing it.
Laugh out loud funny for the dating disfunctional.......2007-05-07
Briget Jones Diary is a amusing look at the ins and outs of the dating world for the 30 something generation. A romatic comedy which will having you laughing to the point of tears. Bridget (as brought to life by Renée Zellweger) is a 30 something gal living in London and on the hunt for love, but sometimes willing to settle for sex, and forever psychoanalyzing (and second-guessing) herself we follow her as she tries to figure out what it is she really wants.
"It all began on New Year's Day in my 32nd year of being single," she says sardonically in what is to become the running internal monologue that ties the events in the movie to the entries in her journal.
The story largely concerns Bridget suddenly going from miserably manless (in a hilarious early scene she gets drunk alone at home and sings along to Jamie O'Neal's "All By Myself") to having two suitors Mark Darcy (Colin Firth)and Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant)-- a situation she simply doesn't know what to do with.
I find this movie is a must see whenever im having dating issue. Its almost as if it helps to know that im not the only one who isnt in a perfect relationship package.
One of my favorite romantic comedies.......2007-04-23
I love this movie. I've traveled to England several times and this comedy epitomizes British humor. Bridget is such an easy character to relate to, a real woman with real problems. We need more characters like her out there, women who have weight issues and can't speak in public. I thoroughly enjoyed the fight scene between Mark and Daniel, it was something that you might see real men who are wimps really doing. This movie is fantastic and I highly recommend it to all women.

The opening and closing moments of Robert (Forrest Gump) Zemeckis's Contact astonish viewers with the sort of breathtaking conceptual imagery one hardly ever sees in movies these day--each is an expression of the heroine's lifelong quest (both spiritual and scientific) to explore the meaning of human existence through contact with extraterrestrial life. The movie begins by soaring far out into space, then returns dizzyingly to earth until all the stars in the heavens condense into the sparkle in one little girl's eye. It ends with that same girl as an adult (Jodie Foster)--her search having taken her to places beyond her imagination--turning her gaze inward and seeing the universe in a handful of sand. Contact traces the journey between those two visual epiphanies. Based on Carl Sagan's novel, Contact is exceptionally thoughtful and provocative for a big-budget Hollywood science fiction picture, with elements that recall everything from 2001 to The Right Stuff. Foster's solid performance (and some really incredible alien hardware) keep viewers interested, even when the story skips and meanders, or when the halo around the golden locks of rising-star-of-a-different-kind Matthew McConaughey (as the pure-Hollywood-hokum love interest) reaches Milky Way-level wattage. Ambitious, ambiguous, pretentious, unpredictable--Contact is all of these things and more. Much of it remains open to speculation and interpretation, but whatever conclusions one eventually draws, Contact deserves recognition as a rare piece of big-budget studio filmmaking on a personal scale. --Jim Emerson

Science and reason over myth.......2007-09-15
In the movie Contact, the brave radio astronomer with SETI, struggles
with her scientifically driven personality, while wondering if there
is anyone else in our cosmos. I identified with Sparks, in that she did
not really believe in god. I came to that same conclusion, while view-
ing this movie. Sometimes people want so badly for something of faith
to be true, that we "mentally invent" such things from within us, while,
in truth, have no "objective reality". For thousands of years, men, and
civilization have been held back by religion and superstition ( magick),
and now we must be courageous enough to break free of the chains of gross
ignorance and step forth into a New Age. If it may be true that man came
from the stars, perhaps, it will one day be our collective destiny to
return to them. Enjoy the movie! May it liberate you as much as it did me.
Not what I was expecting.......2007-09-14
I was really disappointed in this movie. Absolutely gutted. I just didn't 'get' it. It had some good points, but they were far outweighed by the bad points.
I did really like Jodie Foster in Contact, she played the part really well, but Matthew McConaughey was just a waste of screen time. What was his part in this exactly? He could have been lost completely from the movie, and it wouldn't have made a difference. David Morse was seriously underused (I loved him in Green Mile), as was Jena Malone, as she's a really great actress. Another cast member who was underused was the great William Fichtner, playing a blind scientist. I still think he looks like the gorgeous Peter Greene. (That's the second time I've confused the two.)
I think the reason why I didn't get this movie, was I've never been interested in science, or religion. I'm not saying that to offend anyone out there, my Dad had previously read the book, and he watched it with me, and he's interested in science. The ending seemed to me, in my opinion, a major let down, a big cop out, but then it's simply cos it seemed like a big lead up, and then it fell flat. But this is just my opinion. Maybe it was because they blew the budget on the wormhole sequence (not ruining it for anyone?), that they couldn't show any actual aliens. It was also dragged out way too much.
I think I was expecting to see aliens, to see an alien world, which essentially (without ruining it for others) you do, but just not the way I expected. I was thinking it would be this, that, and the next thing, but I didn't get that. But then if every film is what we expect from a glance at the cover/blurb, then it would be pretty rubbish wouldn't it? Would we have wanted to see little green men, with funny eyes, who make beeping noises? I think the answer there is no, and the director did put a really unexpected twist on this, but this film just wasn't for me. I apologise to everyone who loves this movie, but just not for me I'm afraid.
Hey I like the little green men.
A Very Well Made Film.......2007-08-26
This is a very well made film. It is one of my favorites of all time!
A tragically overlooked and underrated classic.......2007-08-16
Occasionally in sci-fi movie magazines, you'll see articles like "Top 10 Women In Science Fiction," and it's always the predictable fan-fave list of hot babes kicking the butts of vampires, zombies, robots, etc. You never see Jodie Foster in "Contact" on such lists, and that's a shame. Why? Because that would involve an actual WOMAN (an intelligent, mature woman of integrity and subtance, as opposed to a kung-fu sex object on steroids) in an actual SCIENCE FICTION movie (an intelligent, thought-provoking premise, as opposed to yet another action movie in space).
Robert Zemeckis made "Contact" as a follow-up to his record-breaking, critically acclaimed "Forrest Gump," and the two make an oddly matched pair. Both are epic stories centered around a single point-of-view character, one the simple man who takes us on a tour of our past, the other a complex woman who leads us into the future. Foster's performance is easily the equal of Tom Hanks' Oscar-winning turn, but sadly this gem of a film didn't get quite the attention it should. (Possibly because, like "The Abyss," another classic, it was swallowed up in the midst of too many summer blockbusters.)
"Contact" follows in the footsteps (and the high quality) of both "2001: A Space Odyssey" and "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," treating its subject of alien intelligence with serious thought: the most plausible aliens ever put on film are the ones we can't quite see. This leaves us free to use our imaginations -- which far exceed Hollywood's abilities in any event -- but also keeps the focus on the story's most truly important aspect, ourselves and our reactions to the prospect that we are not alone in the universe.
Although the story may sound dry on paper -- there are no ray guns, bug-eyed monsters or flesh-eating mutants in this movie -- the pace is never dull, and there's plenty to keep audiences engrossed, including a large amount of sideshow silliness from the world media, some devious government politicking, a chillingly plausible subplot about religious extremists (with Jake Busey, a dead ringer for his dad Gary), and an exasperatingly funny convention of every UFO-loving nutjob in the western hemisphere.
The cast is uniformly impressive, with charismatic actors like Angela Bassett, David Morse, Tom Skerritt, and the always enjoyable James Woods. Stealing the show (and giving us the pleasure of having 2 "Alien" veterans in the cast) is John Hurt as a manipulative Howard-Hughes-ish recluse whose scenes are few but played with "Silence of the Lambs" intensity and power. Personally, I'm not a big Matthew McConaughey fan, but he serves well as the pseudo-love-interest who quietly challenges the beliefs of Foster's character and makes her (and us) reexamine her deepest motives.
Jodie Foster, however, carries the film's emotional center with aplomb, making herself both admirably resourceful and empathetically flawed in equal amounts. Her emotionally wounded character is driven to delve into the heart of the universe through strictly scientific methods, yet resists any suggestion of religious faith, realizing only at the end that both are flipsides of the same coin. Foster allows this conflict within herself to drive the story as much as the global events occurring around her. (Note, incidentally, the recurring characteristic trait of curling into a protective fetal position while perched on the very edge of something -- a chair, a bed, a porch, a canyon -- and gazing upward and outward even while retreating inward. Nice touch, Ms. Foster!)
The plot is well-developed, with a particularly wicked double-twist ending, and there is some insightful social and philosophical commentary in this movie. But, for sheer thrills, it also boasts the most exciting climactic sequence I saw that entire year, as Foster's character makes the last walk to embark on the journey to end all journeys. And frankly, for the summer of '97, that's saying something!
(P.S.: Can't let this review go by without a nod to author of the book, Carl Sagan. Rest In Peace, Carl, and thanks for the great story!)
Good Flick W Flaws.......2007-08-15
but doesn't track the novel well. It tries to be less intellectual than Sagan's masterpiece but ironically still falls short in the visceral realm. Jodie Foster's performance is believable yet annoying, 'I did go ...I really did go' she exclaims in the next to final scene and I'm embarrassed for her cause she sounds like an 8 year old. On her last ditch desperate plea for funding to Hadden Industries she has a 'Tom Cruise' moment when she ends her pitch with 'In the history ...of history !' The novel holds more answers and far less gratuitous drama. The movie raises mostly questions. The little power plays reveled in by James Woods(Kits) and Tom Skerritt(Drumland) who in the novel is a definite 'good guy' are written over the top to appeal to a young audience but adults may find them unbelievable to comical. Having pointed out some flaws, I loved the special effects,(as scarce as they were). The huge alien machine was believable and Jodie's little wormhole trip was impressive. The movie also makes you feel something which is a positive. The surreal Pensicola scene with Elie's beloved dad is the best scene in the movie; although it probably won't make you cry unless you can 'crawl inside' Dr. Arroway(Jodie Foster) which I couldn't do.

The weirdness of actor Nicolas Cage and the weirdness of science-fiction author Philip K. Dick seem like a natural fit. The premise, taken from a short story by Dick, is a good one: A mediocre Las Vegas magician named Chris Johnson (Cage) can see into the future--but only about two minutes at the most. Just enough to pull off his act and to make some money at the gambling tables, so long as he's discreet. Unfortunately, he hasn't been discreet enough; a government agent (Julianne Moore) has sussed out his precognitive talent and wants to use him to track down terrorists. But all Johnson cares about is a beautiful young woman (Jessica Biel, The Illusionist) that he can see in his future--much further in his future than he's ever seen before. Next has flashes that point to a much, much better movie than it turned out to be. A sequence in which Johnson, clairvoyantly explores all the different permutations of how he might approach his mystery woman is both funny and thought-provoking, and when Johnson avoids pursuers by knowing just the right moment to turn a corner or duck his head, it's smart and suspenseful. Unfortunately, the terrorist part of the plot is utterly perfunctory and precognition is reduced to an action movie gimmick. Somewhere in there is the kernel of a romantic comedy about precognition that's just waiting to be made. Cage gives a solid if unsurprising performance, Moore is basically earning a paycheck, but Biel is unexpectedly good (and her part is considerably better-written than your usual romantic interest); her performance suggests a better future than anyone might have predicted. --Bret Fetzer

In 1994, director Richard Linklater (Dazed and Confused, Waking Life) made Before Sunrise, a gorgeous poem of a movie about two strangers (played by Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy) wandering around Vienna, talking, and falling in love. Ten years later, Linklater, Hawke, and Delpy have returned with Before Sunset, which reunites the same characters after Hawke has written a book about that night. Delpy appears at the final book reading of his European tour; they have less than two hours before Hawke has to catch a flight to New York...and in that time, they walk around Paris, talk, and fall in love all over again. It sounds simple, perhaps dull, but it's written with such skill and care and acted with such richness that it's a miracle of filmmaking. On its own, Before Sunset is moving and wonderful; seen right after Before Sunrise, it will break your heart. --Bret Fetzer
Customer Reviews:
Before Sunset.......2007-08-01
I enjoyed this laid back, walk through Paris, movie. It would not have been quite so meaningful if I had not seen "Before Sunrise" first. That should be a must for all viewers. It gives "Before Sunset" the needed depth.
Walk me up when it's over, will you?.......2007-07-15
I didn't care for the first one and could barely stand this one. I like movies with some excitement and fantasy in them. Where is the entertainment in this movie? If I want to see two people blabbing on and on, I could like see them in this movie. Maybe that's the point of this stupid movie. Sorry, I take the "stupid" part back. It's just a dumb movie. I am sure it works for people who might have failed in relationships, people who are lonely, or people can't communicate. The world is full of folks who actually find meanings in a movie -- any movie -- even this one.
It grew with me.......2007-06-08
I loved this movie. I remember watching the first one when I was a teenager and I loved it then. All the conversations where real and intimate. I hate movies where the two people fall in love and you can't really tell why because they hardly ever talked to each other. In Before Sunset you see how their words really effected the other person. I love the way they captured the realistic discomfort and timidness of meeting a lost love and through time seeing the longing of what could have been. Very realistic in its conversations and feelings. I loved it.
Beautiful Sequel Extends the Realism and Genuine Feelings From the First Film.......2007-05-16
I was a huge fan of Before Sunrise when it came out. I loved the simplicity and realism of two young people, who just met, walking around a beautiful European city like Vienna, and getting to know each other.
You might wonder what they have left to talk about in this film since they tackled so many subjects in the previous one. Believe me, they have plenty to talk about, and you wish that this film would never end.
The story takes place nine years after the previous film. Jesse is now a successful author who is doing a book tour throughout Europe. Paris is his last stop. He's sitting in a small book shop, answering questions from some readers, when he looks over his shoulder and sees Celine standing there. The film takes off from there as Jesse and Celine spend a few precious hours together before Jesse must be at the airport to make his flight.
Ethan Hawke (Jesse) and Julie Delpy (Celine) both co-wrote this screenplay along with the director. It's obvious that these two actors know their characters so well, that I'm sure that even they had spent those "nine years" wondering how it would end. Does Jesse come back for that six-month-later reunion? Does Celine? Do people, who really live so far away able to keep, what seems to be an unlikely promise?
I'm not going to relate anything else about the story here for those who have not seen the movie yet. This is a film where the thrill is in the journey, not the goal. Each step that Jesse and Celine make as they walk around Paris, is another step in that journey.
I recall telling friends about the first film and what it was about. They couldn't understand how a movie about two people walking around could be so good. But just like that first film, their conversations are so real and enthralling. I think part of the reason that it's so compelling is that when these two characters are together, they are themselves. There is no fakery or need to put on another face in order to impress the other. Perhaps because they are in a time crunch, they figure that there's no need to be anything other than genuine because they don't feel that they'll ever see each other again. There is a powerful scene in this film that is a recognition and a tribute to that "genuiness" and why they feel more comfortable with each other than with anyone else they've ever been with.
I've always said that sometimes the best stories are the simple ones. And this one is simple, yet again. These two simple, yet real characters, captivate the audience again with their genuine conversation that holds nothing back, and invites the audience to try and do the same.
Definition of Yummy, anyone?.......2007-05-08
This movie is a phenomenal collection to your movie library. It stars Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy who make the perfect match on screen. The movie is not meant to be fancy pants, but laid back and conversational.
It takes place on the streets of Paris, and Jesse and Celine meet by chance again after a nine year hiatus. They converse on topics broad and small. The denouement of the previous film, Before Sunrise, is worth the wait for the this sequel. I won't spill anything, but this is definitely a delightful, funny, and intellectual watch.

The sunny streets of Brooklyn, just after World War II. A young would-be writer named Stingo (Peter MacNicol) shares a boarding house with beautiful Polish immigrant Sophie (Meryl Streep) and her tempestuous lover, Nathan (Kevin Kline); their friendship changes his life. This adaptation of the bestselling novel by William Styron is faithful to the point of being reverential, which is not always the right way to make a film come to life. But director Alan J. Pakula (All the President's Men) provides a steady, intelligent path into the harrowing story of Sophie, whose flashback memories of the horrors of a Nazi concentration camp form the backbone of the movie. Streep's exceptional performance--flawless Polish accent and all--won her an Oscar, and effectively raised the standard for American actresses of her generation. No less impressive is Kevin Kline, in his movie debut, capturing the mercurial moods of the dangerously attractive Nathan. The two worlds of Sophie's Choice, nostalgic Brooklyn and monstrous Europe, are beautifully captured by the gifted cinematographer Néstor Almendros, whose work was Oscar-nominated but didn't win. It should have. --Robert Horton

We Are So Fortunate.......2007-07-30
I don't think anyone who has actually felt this movie in their hearts would ever be able to pass judgement upon any of the characters. I can not imagine the personal struggle that Sophie felt, not only with her newfound friends, but more impotantly, her family she left behind. How do you make that choice? Sophie did what she had to do to survive. I hope and pray that I will never have to choose between my children, because I would most likely..... choose to end my life.
We are so fortunate that we live in a free country, free from tyrannical, biblical, economic, oh, wait who am I kidding????? I am still proud to be an American, where at least I know I'm free!!!!
Sophie's Choice wih Mertl Streep.......2007-07-25
I decided to buy this movie, as it has been in my Best Ten Movies List for
a number of years. Ms Streep is an amazing actress, and does the best foreign
accents I've heard. I would give this movie six stars. M. MacLeod, MD
Great central performance, but not a great film.......2007-06-30
I was drawn to watch this film because it has recently been nominated into the American Film Institute's Top 100 U.S. films. Bearing in mind the effusive reviews for the film already posted on Amazon.Com, I will probably get slated for only giving this film 3/5. Oh well.
The main good thing about this film is primarily Meryl Streep's amazing performance as the title character. Her performance is simply perfect. The emotional resonance of her performance is fantastic, her Polish accent is flawless, she even speaks Polish and German convincingly in the flashback scenes. It ranks alongside Falconetti's performance in Drayer's "Passion Of Joan Of Arc" as one of the greatest in cinema.
However, one performance does not a great film make. What else is great about this film? Keven Kline overcooks his role as Sophie's crazed lover: all charm and wild eyes, charisma turned on at will as if it comes from a tap. Peter MacNichol struggles to bring life to what is basically a dull character: he does his best with what is given to him in the role of the wide-eyed Southern boy.
Nestor Almendros's photography was fantastic in Mallick's "Days Of Heaven". In "Sophie's Choice" he approximates the former film's Autumnal sunlit ambience when the characters (occasionally) move outside: otherwise the camerawork is dull and uninvolving. The washed-out look of the Concentration Camp sequences is well done: approximating the muted colours in many Nazi films, it certainly works in its grimy, unappealing way.
Perhaps the key problem with the film is that it key moment of dramatic tension, the moment that gives the film its title and is the underlying cause of Sophie's toments is held back to the end of the film. Moreover, it is the kind of dramatic moment, having happened in the past, which offers no hope of salvation for either Sophie or the audience. It is sadly reduced to "just one of those" things which happens to people. The dramatic crux of the film is therefore fatally undermined.
The film is not that bad. It's just not an AFI Top 100 film. As a performance, Streep's is top-notch. It is just the film is too long, unfocused and finally unrewarding as either entertainment or dramatic lesson.
Flawless performance by Streep........2007-05-07
I watched Sophie's Choice for the first time last night, and despite having watched numerous Holocaust movies, this one truly touched me. Meryl Streep truly shines as the tragic Sophie, who lives with harrowing memories of her wartime experiences, whilst dealing with the complications of a tumultuous relationship with her live-in mad lover, played convincingly by Kevin Kline. Also of noteworthy performance is McNichol as Stingo, the aspiring writer who also narrates the story...his infatuation and later love for Sophie is true, even after realising Sophie's dark past. The most painful scenes were the flashbacks to Sophie's retelling of her wartime experiences. The "choice" that is the movie's title is rendered in an amazingly heartbreaking performance by Streep, one of cinema's most gut-wrenching scenes ever, and something I will never forget. Truly memorable!
Streep's best performance.......2007-03-07
there is always that one performance in a actors career thats defined as there best and for the great Meryl Streep, her role as Holocaust survivor Sophie brilliantly conveys a person of heartbreak, riddled with guilt, and just so volnerable. pulling of a flawless polish accent, Streep plays Sophie, a polish immagrent who is haunted by her horrible past in WWII during the Holocaust and her stay at a concentration camp. Kevin Kline plays her temptatious lover Nathan and Peter MacNicol is Stingo, the man who Sophie and Nathan befriend. as Stingo becomes more involved in there life, he learns of Sophie's past and the horrible decision she had to make. Kline and MacNicole both provide excellent buffers as to not be outshined by Meryl Streep. the other great thing about this film is the cinamatography, it shifts very nicley from the comforts of Broklyn to the horrors of Europe. there are many great Holocaust films but Sophie's choice is definently at the top three along with Schindler's List and The Pianist. if you want to see a truley powerful film that will leave you heartbroken at the end then Sophie's Choice is the film

Based on the bestseller by Mitch Albom (Tuesdays With Morrie), The Five People You Meet in Heaven takes up where It's A Wonderful Life left off. In the Capra classic, George Bailey gets a vision of life without him. In this Hallmark Hall of Fame production, Eddie (Jon Voight), an amusement park maintenance man and war veteran, ends up in Heaven after an accident takes his life. There he meets five people from his past: the Blue Man (Jeff Richards), the Captain (Michael Imperioli), Marguerite (Dagmara Dominczyk), Ruby (Ellen Burstyn), and Tala (Nicaela and Shelbie Weigel). Each shows him how he impacted their life or they his--and not always for the better. (In these flashbacks, Callahan Brebner and Steven Grayhm play the young Eddie.) The point may seem simplistic--everyone is connected--but The Five People You Meet in Heaven finds a unique and engaging way to make it. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

A Cinematic Achievement.......2007-09-12
Most movies these days are an appalling waste of time, and I never thought I would like one enough to review it or share my thoughts about it--until now. Far from being a treatise about death, it details the reexamination of life in a way that should comfort anyone facing his or a loved one's mortality.
Jon Voight, who never disappoints, is superbly understated in this thought-provoking, touching film. Sans the normal amount of gratuitous violence and offensive sexual content, this movie nevertheless conveys a love story as well as the journey of a man facing his flaws and failures while coming to terms with his role and purpose in life.
All of the performances are stellar, including that of the talented Jeff Daniels, whose initial appearance in blue skin and carnival garb render him nearly unrecognizable.
The greatest achievement of this film lies in successfully conveying imagery and concepts that are usually very difficult to depict in a screen adaptation.
I found the conclusion satisfying, wept tears of consolation for an hour after the movie ended, and contacted people who had recently lost loved ones to consider it a must-have. This is the way moviemaking could and should be.
ONE OF THE BEST MOVIES I'VE EVER WATCHED.......2007-09-12
This was a great movie, one of the best I've ever seen. Only after I read the book did I purchase the movie.
Having lost my sister, my grandmother and my mother, all in the span of a year, I felt compelled to read this book hoping to gain some insight as to whether I'd ever see them again in heaven. Of course, the book didn't answer that question, but seemed to give me a sense of calmness in dealing with the situation.

I wasn't satisfied with the ending of this movie.
Although I think Jon Voight did an excellent job of acting
Nice Movie.......2007-08-30
Its a good movie that teaches about life & death.
A good buy! But like most movies taken from the book, it can't beat the book.
The Five People You Meet in Heaven.......2007-08-12
Very good movie. Entertaining and thought provoking. There are not enough movies that do not contain trashy scenes and filthy language. Thank "Heaven" for Hallmark. I really enjoyed this movie.

Customer Reviews:
It's what you know but Roizen gives the scientific facts.......2007-03-05
Come on. You know you shouldn't smoke, eat refined flour and sugar, and need to exercise. Too many of us are in denial and Dr. Roizen gives the straight scoop. If you need to know the whys, then this is a great book. There's no substitute for healthy habits and this may be the kick in the pants you need. Who wants a heart attack in their 40's.
Practical Tips for Improving Health.......2007-02-02
Dr. Roizen offers easy, practical tips for improving health and well being through diet and exercise. His suggestions apply to the 50- or 60-something as easily as it does the 30-something. It's a great place to start if you're looking to take better care of yourself.
Grow Younger - Control How You Age.......2007-02-01
Dr. Roizen presents his ideas on how you can not only feel healthier, he explains how simple lifestyle changes can produce dramatic results, actually causing your body to feel younger. What is your Real Age? Can you really grow younger?
If you do absolutely nothing, you will continue to age. If you take simple steps like walking 30 minutes a day Dr. Roizen believes you can dramatically alter the course of aging. He talks about taking aspirin, the importance of sleep and why using olive oil is an excellent choice. I was surprised by his advice on coffee and you may want to read up on how caffeine affects aging.
Some of the main features of this short program include discussions about bone mass, muscle mass, blood pressure, exercise, dangers of saturated fat, breathing techniques to reduce stress, life-long learning and the biggest stressors to deal with first.
I learned a few helpful things while watching this DVD, especially the information on Vitamin D, which I think everyone has to worry about. This was very easy to solve with fortified orange juice - Calcium and Vitamin D. I was happy to find out that the orange juice my husband has been buying does have Vitamin D! One less thing to worry about!
While this DVD is interesting, I think I'll also buy the book to read more detailed information on all the topics addressed in the lecture.

The Real Age Makeover: Book and DVD.......2007-01-04
Very important information contained in the pages of this book. I also bought the DVD. I watch Drs. Roizen and Oz on the Oprah Show whenever possible. I wish she would produce a weekly show called "You, the Owner's Manual." Learning about our bodies and how they work is the most important education of all.
How great was it?.......2007-01-04
It was so great that I gave them as stocking stuffers to my brothers, principal, and a good friend. We're all 50+ and looking for sensible ways to stay healthy. This DVD does just that, while explaining Why! We love it.
