As upscale sitcoms go, Something's Gotta Give has more to offer than most romantic comedies. Obviously working through some semi-autobiographical issues regarding "women of a certain age," writer-director Nancy Meyers brings adequate credibility and above-average intelligence to what is essentially (but not exclusively) a fantasy premise, in which an aging lothario who's always dated younger women (Jack Nicholson, more or less playing himself) falls for a successful middle-aged playwright (Diane Keaton) who's convinced she's past the age of romance, much less sexual re-awakening. As long as old pals Nicholson and Keaton are on screen discussing their dilemma or discovering their mutual desire, Something's Gotta Give is terrific, proving (in case anyone had forgotten) that Hollywood can and should aim for an older demographic. Myers falls short with the sitcom device of a younger lover (Keanu Reeves) who wants Keaton as much as Nicholson does; it's believable but shallow and too easily dismissed. Myers also skimps on supporting roles for Frances McDormand, Amanda Peet, and Jon Favreau, but thankfully this is one romantic comedy that doesn't pander to youth. Mature viewers, rejoice! --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars A very enjoyable comedy.......2007-09-01

I caughted this one with my girlfriend one night and really enjoyed it. I was thinking it would be geared more towards the ladies but quickly realized that anyone could love this one. It was very funny and romantic at the same time. I definately recommend this film. It's a great movie for one of those nights you stay in.

4 out of 5 stars Cute and hilarious at times. Must see for 30-70 year olds........2007-08-15

Jack Nicholson is awesome in this film. So is Diane Keaton. Screen chemistry is perfect and they are both believable. It's cute, funny, hilarious at times and you really get the feeling that Nicholson and Keaton are not acting. The movie is a little bit long, but you don't really notice it. Something is always happening in the movie makes you care. Francis McDermond plays Keaton's sister and really fits the character. I think this movie is great and I would recommend it to anyone over 25 years old. I'm not sure anybody under 25 would actually get it... perhaps I'm not being fair to the x generation... sorry.

4 out of 5 stars No Surprises, But Still Enjoyable.......2007-08-03

To be sure, Something's Gotta Give is a formula movie populated with formula types. Nicholson, for example, plays the same sort of hate-to-love-him misfit who redeems himself before the credits that he played in the more original As Good As It Gets. Having said that, the quality of the acting and directing make this as good as formula gets; which is to say, quite enjoyable.

The characterizations, and the choices the characters make, are sure to ruffle the feathers of those with an ideological axe to grind. But ideological commitments are hardly the basis for a romance, or a successful relationship. Reeves is charming as the earnest, smart younger man who does everything right. The dilemma for Keaton's character is that he doesn't understand her the way that Nicholson's character does.

My biggest disappointment is not with the choice Keaton's character makes--the movie would work either way. What's disappointing is that a character who has been portrayed as an intelligent, mature adult ultimately has her choice made for her. In that sense, the ending of the movie is a cop-out.

5 out of 5 stars Laugh out Loud!.......2007-07-16

This is for all adults, no matter what decade you are currently surviving. It's laughable for those of us who are almost there and for others who can step into the shoes of and relate to the fabulous, soulful characters. No bad acting here!

5 out of 5 stars Some ONE's got to give...........2007-06-29

And the "someones" are Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton, who give wonderfully sweet and sassy performances in this story about Destiny almost thwarted.

Jack plays a quitessential playboy. It seems he has a new girlfriend every week. Only this time perhaps he's found "the one" in Amanda Peet. Enter Diane Keaton, Peet's mother. A successful playwrite, she is hardly looking for romance. Comfortable in her static, routine existence, surrounded by her characters, living her life vicariously through them at times, Keaton seems blissfully unaware of her own appeal. (Typical to any Keaton character, which is likely part of her basic charm.)

Keaton and Nicholson have a battle of wits, a battle of charms and an ultimate battle of hearts (notwithstanding Nicholson's heart attack about mid movie.)

In the closing minutes, the question is looming... will they or won't they? And I won't spoil it... you'll have to watch it to find out.

but I will say this... the movie is satisfying in its conclusion and is remarkable throughout. I LOVED it!

Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau are reunited in this popular 1993 comedy, in which the Odd Couple veterans play John and Max (respectively), a pair of elderly bachelors whose lifelong friendship is based on mutual aggravation and constant bickering. Their competitive natures kick into overdrive when the beautiful Ariel (Ann-Margret) moves into their otherwise snowbound Minnesota neighborhood. She takes a liking to John, but after a lover's spat she also gives Max a chance at romance, and the long-time buddies reach a peak of grumpy rivalry. It's a stretch to think that Ann-Margret's dating choices would be limited to a pair of grouchy codgers, but sarcastic attitude and snappy dialogue made this a surprise hit (followed by a 1995 sequel), and Burgess Meredith adds plenty of spice as Lemmon's amorous old father. Don't forget to watch the hilarious outtakes during the closing credits! --Jeff Shannon

Description

Two elderly, eccentric, next-door neighbors sustain a rancorous relationship that only a wise observer could recognize as a very special friendship. When a lonely, flamboyant, middle-aged widowmoves in across the street from them, the male rivalry begins.

I love this movie and all of the actors and actresses that played in this movie. It's my of overall favorites

5 out of 5 stars Great movie!.......2007-05-12

Ok, I love this movie. On the surface it is not one that would necessarily appeal to me right off the bat, but the combination of Lemmon and Matthau is hard to beat. They were brilliant in the "Odd Couple" and they are brilliant in this film. Their chemistry was undeniable and I love watching two incredible comedic actors that do not have to resort to cursing and overy bawdy humor. This film is a great example of not only their chemistry but their individual comic genius. Oh, and the outtakes of Burgess Meridith...well, you just have to watch!

5 out of 5 stars Training film.......2007-02-10

Do you think grumpy is natural? Think again. Learn from the experts, Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau. They really make an odd couple "Odd Couple, The" - Neil Simon (1968).

Neighbors John Gustafson (Jack Lemmon), and Max Goldman (Walter Matthau) have always been friendly rivals that play practical jokes on each other. Things really heat up with the arrival of a vivacious neighbor Ariel Truax (Ann-Margret).

5 out of 5 stars Loved them like crazy!.......2007-01-10

I always loved Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau. They're never die from my
heart. I loved to see them together in the film. Of course, I've got lots
of such films in my hand now and definitely only from this Amazon.com,
my DVD shopping heaven.

I loved you too, Amazon.com, for a really great service and keeping
them Alive!.

5 out of 5 stars Cute, clever and very funny :->.......2006-11-06

I really, really, really love this movie. I always loved Jack Lemmon and Walter Mathau and to see the two of them together was such a treat.
I love the witty rapid-fire banter between the two of them. They love to hate each other in the movie. They are neighbors and 'enemies' (although there are some touching moments toward the end of the film). They are both vying for the affections of their new female neighbor (Ann Margaret) and the results are hilarious.
This is such a cute movie and a feel good movie. It's set at the festive time of Christmas and the beautiful white sceenery is spectacular. Do yourself a favour and rent/buy this movie. It's funny and warm and touching in parts. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
PS. Look for some funny outtakes after the final scene and right before the full credits start rolling. It's excellent.

This 1954 musical remake of Four Daughters stars Doris Day as a well-bred New England woman who marries a chip-on-his-shoulder musician (Frank Sinatra). Lots of tears, yes, but this version of Fannie Hurst's novel is considerably cheered up from the 1938 tearjerker. Dorothy Malone and Elizabeth Fraser play Day's sisters (a fourth sister present in Four Daughters was written out), Robert Keith is the paterfamilias to a bunch of musical prodigies, and Gig Young is entertaining as the composer-boarder who tries deflecting the sisters' interest in him by bringing Sinatra home one day. Both Day and Sinatra really shine in this, and the songs include the Johnny Richards-Caroline Leigh title tune, which became part of Sinatra's standard repertoire. --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars Toward A Musical Noir.......2007-08-03

Throughout the 1930s and well into the 1940s musicals were inevitably lighthearted confections calculated to send the audience away filled with good cheer and humming a tune. In the late 1940s, however, a different type of musical emerged. The story was usually about a singer or a star or a musician, thus allowing plenty of room for the songs and production numbers the audiences expected--but far from being lighthearted, it was often a dark tale. It was, in a phrase, musical noir.

Many performers took a turn in this genre, but there is really only one who did so consistently: Doris Day. Given her extremely popular comedies of the late 1950s and early 1960s, it is easy to forget that she had some serious acting chops--but home studio Warner Brothers was quick to spot her potential in this area and showcase it in such non-musicals as STORM WARNING. And although the studio certainly put her through many "light hearted musical" hoops, it also gave her several musicals in which her role was more dramatic than comic: MY DREAM IS YOURS, YOUNG MAN WITH A HORN, I'LL SEE YOU IN MY DREAMS--and in 1954 YOUNG AT HEART.

The film is based on the 1938 FOUR DAUGHTERS and keeps much the same story. The Tuttles are a musical family: father Gregory (Robert Keith) and daughters Laurie (Doris Day), Fran (Dorothy Malone), and Amy (Elizabeth Fraser) are an instrumental quartet whose home lives are kept on even keel by non-musical Aunt Jessie (the legendary Ethel Barrymore.) When Laurie accepts a marriage proposal from handsome Alex Burke (Gig Young) it seems the most the family has to worry about is going from quartet to trio--a seemingly perfect set up for musical comedy. But Alex has a friend, and upon his arrival the story takes a dark turn indeed. The friend is Barney Sloan, a hard-knocks musician in poor health who soon has eyes for Laurie. And he is played by none other than Frank Sinatra.

Just as it is easy to forget Day's skill as a dramatic actress, so too is easy to forget Sinatra's abilities as a dramatic actor. Like Day, Sinatra first came to the screen in a cream-puff movie: HIGHER AND HIGHER. But Sinatra was at MGM, and at MGM cream-puff musicals were the unalterable order of the day; it was not until a decade later that he dropped critical jaws with FROM HERE TO ETERNITY. The pairing of Day and Sinatra is a stroke of genius, and it is their chemistry upon which the major appeal of the film rests: they spark and sizzle as the pretty and very good girl and the forlorn, been-there-done-that guy. The paring is all the more effective due to unexpectedly solid support. Ethel Barrymore was a legendary actress, and at the time of this film she was largely confined to a wheelchair--but you would never know it from her remarkably effective performance as the acidic, knowing, and yet kindly Aunt Jessie. Gig Young and Dorothy Malone also score in their roles enough to make you wish they had more screen time.

But the film has a flaw, and it is a major one. The film was originally intended as a very direct remake of FOUR DAUGHTERS--but Sinatra greatly disliked the original story's ending and insisted on a rewrite. The result is singularly unfortunate: the story builds toward a seemingly inevitable and very downbeat conclusion... only to suddenly shift into happy-ending-mode in a way that undercuts everything that has gone before. It's a tremendous pity; had it been otherwise, YOUNG AT HEART might well be considered one of the great films of its decade.

Both Day and Sinatra would go on to other dramatic roles; Day would hit a highwater mark with LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME and THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH while Sinatra would dazzle even his worst critics with THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN ARM. It's a great pity that they were never teamed again--but, and in spite of its unfortunate ending, YOUNG AT HEART not only gives us that teaming, it catches both of them on an upward curve surrounded by first rate talents. Recommended.

2 out of 5 stars Where did Warner Bros. go?.......2007-07-01

I have the Republic Pictures/Artisan dvd release of the 1954 Doris Day/Frank Sinatra film "Young at Heart" When released, this was a Warner Bros. picture. However, a great deal of effort has been made to completely erase that fact from this release. There is no Warner Bros. logo at the beginning. The original main title opening has been completely cut out. It opens with the credit "Doris Day and Frank Sinatra" and Sinatra singing the words "Fairy tales can come true ..." with no orchestral introdution. This credit remains on the screen for an uncomfortably long period of time - it couldn't have been like that in the original release. Then, at the end of the film, Sinatra and Day finish singing "You My Love", there's a little bit of dialouge between the family members, the song "Young at Heart" fades in (Sinatra singing), the camera pulls away from the scene and all of a sudden we ABRUPTLY cut to a blue screen that says "The End" as the song comes to and end and the end title music (which would normally have accompanied the Warner Bros. logo) plays. Is there anyone out there that can explain what is going on here?! It looks absolutely AWFUL. If the rights to the film have passed on to someone else, why couldn't they have just affixed their logo (if it's really necessary) prior to the beginning and efter the end of the original credits? Doris, Frank and Warner Bros. deserve better. The color and sound is quite good in this release but the whole thing is rendered second rate by this tacky handling of the credits.

5 out of 5 stars Young at Heart.......2007-06-27

Sinatra was paired opposite fellow crooner Day in Gordon Douglas's colorful "Young At Heart," a romantic melodrama (with music) based on 1938's "Four Daughters." It takes Sinatra forty minutes to show up, but it's worth the wait. Not only does he sing some fabulous songs (including the title tune), but his Barney is a complex, vulnerable character refreshingly different from the singer's swaggering sixties persona. Frank and Doris, who both started as big-band singers, share terrific chemistry under Douglas's direction, making you wish they'd collaborated more often.

5 out of 5 stars Day and Sinatra a Great Duo.......2007-04-11

This light hearted film was enjoyable with superb songs and fine acting as well. Wonderful cast headed by Doris Day, Frank Sinatra, Dorothy Malone, and Ethel Barrymore.

5 out of 5 stars Ahhhh Romance!!!!.......2007-09-12

If you are a fan of romance and romantic movies, this is a keeper. If you are a fan of Tim Matheson (major fan here) and Jaclyn Smith this is the movie for you. Basically it is the girl meets boy/boy meets girl and they don't get along. He can't stand her and thinks she is just some city reporter who has no clue of what life is like in a remote area. She thinks he is arrogant, conceited etc... Of course, one of the village women plays cupid and matchmaker and to see how it all comes together you have to watch the movie. It is a wonderful romance movie with a beautiful ending. There is much more in the middle, but I don't want to ruin it or give it all away. Watch it, you won't regret it.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent romance............2005-04-04

It's a pity that movies like these are not getting better treatment by the distributors. Case in fact, are the problems encountered by those people who first bought this dvd. But surprise, surprise!, same thing happened here in Australia when the movie was first shown on FOXTel cable last year.

The distributors or whoever did the ad/guide layout didn't even bother to mention the names of the two lead stars, namely Jaclyn Smith and Tim Matheson. Instead, they used the names of those two unknown supporting actors (!?). If you don't know anything about the film, you'll definetely missed it.

Anyway, I really like this film. It's so romantic, and so sweet and the performance are absolutely fabulous. Smith and Matheson are so beautiful together. They should actually make more romantic movies. The film is so affectionate plus the scenery --the beautiful outback of Canada and the fish (!) of course!

I'm just wondering why they changed the original title FISHING WITH JOHN? That suits better, I guess.

And my golly, Jaclyn Smith, did she really found the fountain of youth? She's absolutely gorgeous and so sexy....

5 out of 5 stars Problem Fixed, Excellent Movie!.......2004-10-02

This movie is so good! It is a fantastic love story, and Jaclyn Smith's performance is superb! I would highly recommend this movie. Especially those of you who love to watch romantic movies! AND you can't beat the price!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Navigating The Heart.......2004-07-11

THEY HAVE CORRECTED THE PROBLEM MENTIONED IN THE OTHER REVIEWS. I too got the movie labeled Navigating The Heart but it was actually Natural Enemy (twice). Amazon was great about replacing and refunding and they notified the distributor about the problem. I then waited about a week and ordered it again because I had seen it on TV and liked it. I finally got the RIGHT DVD. I love this movie and got interested in the author of "Fishing With John", whose life this movie was based on, and ordered the book. Of course the movie was changed, as they always are, but both the the book and the movie are very good in my opinion and I would recomend it to anyone that likes romance stories.

1 out of 5 stars Shame about the mix up........2004-05-30

I had exactly the same problem, and I would like to re-iterate what you said about Amazon. I was refunded the total amount for the DVD and postage very quickly, and I didn't even have to send the DVD back. It's a real shame there is a problem because I've never seen the movie and was really looking forward to watching it.

Ok, so this movie is not going to be on any great movie lists, but I still enjoyed it. Sometimes you just need a movie where you don't need to think, you just watch and have fun. I liked the plot, and all of the actors (Heather Graham, David Sutcliffe, Taye Diggs, Sandra Oh) did a great job with their roles. A great chick flick for movie night!

3 out of 5 stars Have your Cake and Eat it ,Too.......2006-07-04

Director Nisha Ganatra and writer Tassie Cameron seem to have most of their experience in TV movies so this little slice of the industry is a change for them. Would that it were wholly successful because it seems as though both had a fine idea for something to say but just didn't know how to make it work. And again, blame the PR folks for making a cover for the DVD that not only seems silly, it has little to do with the story inside.

Pippa McGee (Heather Graham) is a travel writer, a hedonist, and an independent woman who avoids relationships like the plague. The film starts with a goofus dash for a wedding in which she is once again a bridesmaid on the run. After the ceremony she jokes with her best friend Lulu (Sandra Oh) who is equally against long term relationships beyond a quick shag, and she also meets one Ian (David Sutcliffe - Under the Tuscan Sun, Testosterone, Happy Endings etc), a handsome if shy young man who though attracted to Pippa, sees her as dangerous territory.

Pippa soon discovers that her father Malcolm McGee (Bruce Gray), a wealthy successful owner of a magazine conglomerate, is ill, has a heart attack, and though the father and daughter have had a negligible relationship, Pippa offers her help. Of course, her assignment is to be editor of 'Wedding Bells' magazine her departed mother started, and Pippa takes on the epitome of everything she loathes about relationships and marriage and tries to make a go of it. She discovers that Ian is her father's vice president and thus in charge of her new and loathed assignment. Pippa partners with the handsome magazine photographer Hemingway Jones (Taye Diggs), has a fling, and becomes close friends and partners in an attempt to change the look of the wedding magazine. There are far too many subplots to discuss, but suffice it to say that changes occur in the personalities of everyone involved and the ending, while entirely predictable, has enough humor and warmth to make a good evening out of a shaky story.

Heather Graham handles her 'challengingly bad' role with great aplomb: she is a delight to watch. The remainder of the cast does their best with the lines they're given. This is a bit of fluff, aimed at the 'chick flick' devotees, but it has its moments. Grady Harp, July 06

3 out of 5 stars Good movie for "chick flick" lovers.......2006-07-01

I love "chick flicks"(as my husband calls them). This movie will not be winning any Oscars but I found it romantic, funny and entertaining. Heather Graham's character was likable and enjoyable to watch. I would recommend this movie.

Picture, if you will, a regulation old-time Western saloon, teeming with colorful frontier types and about to be knocked into kindling by a galoot with a fearsome toothache. At this moment, through the swinging doors appears a pilgrim from the East--Boston, to be precise--outfitted with top hat, frock coat, a courtly manner, and a medical bag filled with the miracles of modern (i.e., 1849) pharmacology. He will cure the ruffian's toothache. He is a druggist. He is also John Wayne.

In Old California qualifies as one of Duke's quirkier assignments during his indentured servitude at Republic Pictures, and he makes a game stab at the sort of arch light-comedy heroism more typically left to his Reap the Wild Wind costar Ray Milland. Unfortunately, he has to do so without discernible assistance from director William McGann. Moreover, the script, which is incoherent even by Republic standards, absentmindedly omits any prospect for menace till half the running time has elapsed. Saloon songstress Binnie Barnes may or may not be kept by her employer, the loutish empire builder Albert Dekker, who resents her attraction to Wayne almost as much as he wants to hog California for himself. Fortunately, the gold rush comes along to provide opportunity for civic hysteria, an outbreak of fever, several varieties of unlikely heroism, and a climactic shootout of surpassing silliness. Edgar Kennedy and Patsy Kelly handle the comic relief... but where does it begin? --Richard T. Jameson

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars The DUKE is great, but the rest are second-rate..........2001-06-16

In one of The DUKE's more off-beat roles, he plays a Gold Rush era
druggist in this picture. Turns out John Wayne's father was a
druggist, which is why DUKE wanted to play the role.

Although he
does engage in some gunplay, for the most part, DUKE is not the center
of action in this one. Rather, he's more or less a gentle man of
science who tries to bring much needed medicines to Sacremento. In the
process of following his dream, and the attentions of saloon girl
Lacey Miller, he incurs the wrath of local bad guy and town boss Britt
Dawson and his brother.

Eventually, DUKE has to choose between two
girls, clear his name of selling poisoned medicines, have it out with
the Dawsons, and save a gold mining camp from typhoid fever. All in a
day's work for The DUKE!

Unfortunately, this 1942 effort is not
exactly a classic DUKE movie. Rather, it plays more like some of the
non-descript "B" westerns DUKE made between 1930's "The
Big Trail", and 1939's "Stagecoach".

Most of the
cast is forgettable, save DUKE and Patsy Kelly. Kelly played comedic
roles similar to those played by Mary Wickes, and she stands out better
than the bland villains in the film. Her comedic love interest is
okay, though somewhat William Frawley-ish.

As for the DVD, the
transfer is fair at best. The print is pretty well-worn, and even
identifies itself as being a re-release print in the opening
credits!

While DUKE's part is pretty interesting, unless you are a
DUKE or Kelly completist, you could probably pass this one up.

Something a bit different from the team of Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung, Heart of Dragon has action scenes and comedy, but also tells the dramatic tale of two brothers who are torn between duty and dreams. Tat Fung (Chan) has recently left a S.W.A.T.-type agency for the local police force to take care of his mentally disabled older brother Do-do (Hung). Although Do-do is a full grown man, he has the mental capacity of a young child and is always getting into mischief. Tat has put away his dreams of marriage and traveling the world as a sailor to watch after Do-do. While playing cops and robbers with his kid friends, Do-do gets mixed up in a jewelry heist and is kidnapped by the bad guys. Tat momentarily puts aside his official law-enforcer status and takes matters into his own hands, which results in serious repercussions. The fight sequences in Heart of Dragon are closer to such American films as Die Hard; Tat and his S.W.A.T.-team buddies take on the bad guys in an unfinished building with zero comedy and lots of bloodshed. At a crucial impasse in the story Tat lashes out at Do-do, and this poignant scene perfectly illustrates the frustrations of a man who loves and hates his brother at the same time. It's a switch from the usual fare, and Heart of Dragon offers ample proof that Chan and Hung can handle dramatic material. --Shannon Gee

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Different Jackie Chan movie.......2007-07-27

Jackie Chan proves he is not only an action star in this movie. I loved it, but as a true Jackie Chan fan, it would be hard not to. For the first time Jackie and Sammo show a range of emotion that American audiences have never seen before. The intense scenes between the two of them leave a Jackie fan in tears. The two things I didn't like are the fact that Jackie doesn't dub his own voice and the dubber doesn't show the range of emotion that fits the scenes. Also the ending is a little vague, you're not really sure of the ending. Any way, for the true Jackie fan, a roller coaster ride and I enjoyed every minute of it!

5 out of 5 stars A Heart Breaker.......2007-05-13

Jackie is at his best in acting and action here. He has a brother to love and care for and does a very good job in protecting him.Check it out, you might like it.

4 out of 5 stars Popcorn movie.......2006-08-09

Jackie Chan is a cop who lives with his developmentally disabled brother. He is his caretaker and protector. Chan's character's dream since he was a child was to be a sailor and the chance arrives in the mail. A job offer. To do so, he must leave his brother in the care of questionable others. The brother gets in trouble often and before Chan leaves, he gets into a doozy of a jam.

Okay, it's a hokey B movie with cheesy music but it was fun to watch. Lots of Jackie Chan action and a decent plot. Relax, don't think too much, grab a pop and munchies and enjoy the show.

3 out of 5 stars A very touching story and some great action and stunts in this flick.......2006-07-15

So this movie is a Golden Harvest production where they pulled ALL the old school kung fu stars to star in a movie with not that much action. yeah, I don't get it either, but the movie is pretty good. It is about Jackie and his mentally retarded brother, Sammo. He pulls it off quite nicely and most of his scenes are evry funny. So whether you are a kugn fu fan or not, this is at least worth a peek.

But let me name you all the stars. Again they all don't fight, btu it is nice to see them. But then again, most of them do end up fighing in the 2 bonus fights on the disk, so it's all good. Here we go-Jackie, Samo, Lam Ching Ying(nice eyebrows), phillip ko(really nice mustache), hoi san lee(36th chamber), wah yuen and hoi meng(hellz windstaff) star and do the stunts, james tien, Hark on-fung(warriors two), Blacky Ko(boxer's adventure), Roy chiao(a touch of zen), corey yuen, Dick Wei(avenging eagle), Wu Ma, Kar lok chin(operation scoprpio), and conan lee's friend in Ninja in the dragon's den. I left some people out so play name that old school star while watching this, it is quite fun.

I only gave the movie a 3 becasue the movie was a bit cheesy, the haircuts were extra cheesy, and the music had me reaching for the remote a few times.

The fox/fortune star release is VERY well done with dual languages and you need the original langualge for this. In kung fu, dubbing is ok, but in a more serious movie like this, you can't listen to those same, stupid voices. It is presented in a widescreen format and the pictuer is pretty good. bonus feature is 2 extra fight scenes. Which reminds me, I forgot that Chi Ling Chu(kugn fu hustle, snake in eagle's shadow) fights in one of the stupidest fights ever. ALso check out Lee Hoi San's funky hair do.

4 out of 5 stars Fox Presents Fortune Star, Uncut.......2006-02-28

This is in response to the Feb. 5th review titled "ORIGINAL IS BETTER~!"

While I agree with the message, it was put the wrong place. While in most cases the R1 releases of Hong Kong films are heavily cut and dubbed, these releases by Fox, are actually done by the fantastic HK company Fortune Star, and only released under Fox. They contain the UNCUT film in the original Cantonese language (DTS too!), as well as the English dub. As usual the picture quality is more than fantastic. The only downpoints are the usual Fortune Star downpoints: Hardly-to-no extras, and slightly edited sound fx,(but in this case no original mono sound). Also the subtitles are actually dubtitles, but are not terrible. In all, this is still one of the better versions of this film on DVD, especially for under $10.

PS. As for the argument that "no other countries have their own cuts, like France," maybe you should look into Luc Besson's distribution of Asian (especially Thai) films.

3 out of 5 stars The Love Goddess in one of her early musicals.......2006-10-19

Rita Hayworth plays a classy gal named Patricia, a woman who is about to be married to Charles (Anal Mowbray), a very rich but much older man. When her cab collides with another cab, she and Bob (Tony Martin), the other rider, end up in the same cab. Patricia takes command of the destination telling Bob she's on the way to her wedding. She never lets him get in the fact that he must make the midnight boat leaving to deport him or end up in jail.
They both miss their destinations and fate steps in as two hearts become one in a whirlwind romance that includes some great musical numbers penned by Robert Wright and Chet Forrest and crooned by Martin. Ultimately, Patricia faces a hard decision, stay true to the man she's betrothed to and the one with the wealth, or listen to her heart and gamble on a man who might not be allowed to stay in the country.
Some very funny moments emerge from the cast, including George Tobias as a phony Russian aristocrat.
It's not brain science but the film is entertaining, thanks mostly to the talented Hayworth and charming Martin.

3 out of 5 stars "I COULD HAVE CATCHED THAT CAB IN HEELS".......2006-08-09

Ms. Fenn is wonderful to watch. The storyline was a complete original back then, at least to me. All through the movie I was not sure who would end up with who and thought it would be a cope out if Lynch's Lesbian Character ends up with Baldwin, they had good chemistry, unforunately nothing ends well but never give up on love.

4 out of 5 stars Sharing lives.......2001-07-13

Unexpecting: This movie relates the story of my life: two woman deeply in love, loving each other differently. One lives with the memory of a loss by watching movies recorded when they were living together. THe other loving her friend through her heart, but having an affair with her friends room mate, and in love with this guy. The ending is...

5 out of 5 stars One of The '90s Top Films.......2000-08-08

Very touching, very surprising. This is a strikingly original character study with stellar performances by Baldwin and Sherilyn Fenn, but the always intriguing Kelly Lynch steals the movie with her portrayal of a young gay woman with a brave heart of gold. Get two hankies, two buckets of popcorn and two good friends and you'll love it.

2 out of 5 stars Not for me.......2000-01-09

Based on Amazon's customer reviews I went out and rented this movie. I had to struggle to stay awake. While the performances were indeed good, the story felt forced and false. The best thing about this movie was Sherilyn Fenn's eyes.

5 out of 5 stars Lynch Is A Revelation.......2000-01-01

Performance by underappreciated Lynch is her best since "Drugstore Cowboy." This is one of the finest films of the '90s.

4 out of 5 stars Pleasant Family Comedy About a Family of Crooks .......2006-03-20

THE YOUNG IN HEART is an unusual comedy from the 1930's. Produced by the legendary David O. Selznick, it's a warm-hearted picture of a family of con-men who worm their way into the good graces of an lonely elderly woman living on an estate in hopes of becoming her heirs. The movie is charming but I actually didn't find it that funny, yet it is very enjoyable. Character actress Minnie Dupree steals the show in a gentle, non-hammy performance as the lonely senior - incredibly, this is one of only four films she made, the other three being rather minor efforts.

Janet Gaynor and Douglas Fairbanks Jr. are the nominal stars of the picture as the children of Roland Young and Billie Burke, all of them experts in swindling. Gaynor and Fairbanks' scenes are so unusually playful one suspects their being siblings is just another con (it's not). Young and Burke are in fine form as the prententious father and dizzy mother ("Oh, my little girl has a birthday this year, too!"). Fairbanks is quite believable as a non-malicious cad but while I love Janet Gaynor and she's by far my favorite star of the cast, she is not very credibly cast as a professional crook, her natural sweetness and good nature just gets in the way although she does give a fine performance. I was most impressed with Richard Carlson (film debut) playing Janet's beau, the young American star speaks in a most credible Scottish brogue. This was also one of Paulette Goddard's first films - cast as Fairbanks' girl - she is third-billed but doesn't appear in the first 40 minutes of this 91 minute movie. This was Janet's last film as a star - she retired after it's release and returned to the screen only once in 1957 in a secondary role in a Pat Boone musical.

The movie is a bit on the cute side with puppies, penguins, and sweet old ladies but what's wrong with that? The print quality is excellent on this DVD. Also want to note Amazon shows the DVD cover as picturing Fairbanks and Paulette Goddard. Maybe somebody at MGM DVD didn't realize it wasn't Janet - this has apparently been corrected in later copies - my copy shows a picture of Janet in place of Paulette while Douglas remains where he was.

5 out of 5 stars A Delightful Charmer.......2005-08-22

This warm and delightful charmer might just be the best classic film you've probably never seen. Richard Wallace helmed this hilarious film based on the story "The Gay Banditti" by I.A.R. Wylie about a "family" of shallow scoundrels who find that pretending to be decent isn't really all that difficult. A sharp and funny screenplay by Paul Osborne and a playful score from Franz Waxman make this one of David O. Selznick's best productions. A 1930's cast that dreams are made of includes Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Janet Gaynor, Paulette Goddard, Richard Carlson, Roland Young, Billie Burke, Henry Stephenson, and Minnie Dupree as Miss Fortune.

Our group of rascals are on the French Riviera about to get rich when they are politely asked to get out of town by the police. Rick (Douglass Fairbanks Jr.) was about to marry rich and put the family in the black for life. His "sister" George-Anne (Janet Gaynor) had just discovered too late that her mark, Duncan Macrae (Richard Carlson), wasn't wealthy at all. He did give her a ring that has been held in his family for years, but she can't understand why thinking about him makes her cry. Rick is wide-eyed at her musings about people who actually marry for love, and in an hilarious moment in which she is trying to understand her melancholy, she tells Rick: "How can I be in love with him? He hasn't any money!"

Roland Young is the father, Sahib, who poses as a former Bengal Lancer, and Billie Burke is the mother, "Marmy." She can barely keep up with her husband's yarns of India, and at one point in the film tells a group that Rick and George-Anne were born there but she's never been, but would like to go one day!

Given train tickets to London just to get them off the Riviera, George-Anne is shocked to discover that Duncan, despite having been made aware of what they were doing, has followed her. He thinks she's not like the rest of her family and can be "cured" and she tries to convince him for the rest of the film that she's just as worthless as they are! Trying to lose him, George-Anne meets a kind, sweethearted but lonely old lady named, appropriately enough, Miss Fortune. She is looking for a family to love and when they discover she is wealthy, they warm up to her in a big hurry.

George-Anne and Rick save her life when the train wrecks and soon they are all staying in her huge home, "working" her until she changes her will and they are set for life. George-Anne has gone a bit soft though, and as the others take--gulp--jobs, so they can pretend to be normal people, they slowly discover that they really want to be what the kind Miss Fortune (Minnie Dupree) thinks they are.

Duncan, still trying to win over George-Anne, gets Sahib a job selling cars. He tries to refuse it in a very funny scene but George-Anne forces him to accept the offer. Since it's pretty much the same thing as a con, he is so successful at it he becomes the head of the London branch! The very fast car he sells is called The Flying Wombat!

Rick, meanwhile, discovers the pretty Leslie Saunders (Paulette Goddard) and charms her into giving him a job as a mail sorter. She begins to wear on him and he starts reading about engineering. When he is honest with her about what he and his family are doing, she is disturbed by his seeming lack of regret for how they are using Miss Fortune. Leslie isn't quite sure it's all an act, however, and she may be right.

Miss Fortune has grown on all of them and Rick begins to wonder if they've actually become decent people and are no longer just pretending. When Miss Fortune has a serious spell and it is discovered she may not have her wealth anymore, the truth might just come out.

Fairbanks and Gaynor are wonderful here, and would stand out even more were it not for the equally endearing performances from the rest of the cast. This is a fabulous classic with a very special mood. It is sweet, hilarious, sentimental, and full to the brim with charm. I can't recommend this film any higher or I would. This is not a rental. This is a sparkling diamond every film buff must own, so it will be close at hand to watch over and over.

4 out of 5 stars YOUNG IN HEART PRETTY SPIFFY LOOKING ON DVD!.......2004-10-21

In "Young in Heart" Miss Ellen Fortune (Minnie Dupree) is a painfully lonely elderly woman, traveling on a European train. She meets the rather roguish, wholly unusual Carlton family; George-Anne (Janet Gaynor), Richard (Douglas Fairbanks Jr.), Leslie (Paulette Goddard), Col. Anthony (Roland Young) and Marmy (Billie Burke); a rambunctious pack of congenial connivers. Recently deposed from their perch on the Riviera, the Carlton's decide that Ellen is just such a wealthy fop, ripe for their picking. Ellen, however, is not as easily cajoled out of her savings. Forced to regroup their efforts, the con-artists are delivered into unfamiliar territory before getting their way; they're going to have to work for it! Richard Wallace's direction allows for just the right amount of is sensitivity and humor to prevail in a film that provides heart-warming results. After an unfavorable preview, "Young at Heart" had its downtrodden ending revamped: the result; two Academy Award nominations and a fun-loving frolic for all time.

MGM's DVD is rather impressive. The B&W picture exhibits a very nicely balanced gray scale with smooth, solid blacks and very clean whites. Age related artifacts are present throughout but do not distract. Some minor edge enhancement crops up but pixelization is kept to a minimum. Overall the picture will surely not disappoint. The audio is mono but more than adequate for a film of this vintage. There are no extras.

4 out of 5 stars A THIRTIES DELIGHT........2002-08-31

A wonderfully told story has Dupree (as Miss Fortune!) playing an elderly woman who is painfully lonely. While traveling on a European train, she meets a rather unusual family of charming connivers. They've just been kicked out of the Riviera, and see this rich, lonely old woman as their next meal ticket...Dupree, however, isn't the easy pushover the con artists were hoping for, and they learn about a little thing called w-o-r-k. The story is told with sensitivity and the right amount of humour: the results are charming & heart-warming. The original ending had Miss Fortune dying, but this proved unfavourable to preview audiences, so the cast was called back to film a more upbeat, happier ending. The photography and music are both excellent and garnered AA nominations.

4 out of 5 stars A con artist family learns a lesson in kindness.......2001-04-07

Roland Young, Billie Burke, Douglas Fairbanks Jr. and Janet Gaynor are a family of con artists out to fleece Miss Fortune (misfortune?), a rich old lady, of her money. However, they soon find that her kindness to them causes a change of heart and they decide to reform. Great unknown David O. Selznick comedy also features Paulette Goddard and Richard Carlson as the romantic others for the brother and sister con artists. Well worth a look!
