A minor classic from Disney, this 1973 all-animal, all-animated musical version of the familiar story is more charming than one might expect. Perhaps it's the warm, chummy take on key relationships within the legend--the way Robin Hood (Brian Bedford) gets twitterpated whenever the subject of Maid Marian (Monica Evans) comes up or the way best pal Little John (Phil Harris voicing a variation on his own Baloo from The Jungle Book) admonishes the Sherwood Forest hero, "Aw, Rob, why dontcha just marry the girl?" (Then, of course, there's the canny "casting" of the romantic leads as foxes: Robin the sly one and Marian the, well, foxy one.) The rest of the vocal cast is lively and eclectic: Peter Ustinov, Andy Devine, Terry-Thomas, George Lindsey. Roger Miller provides the songs and voice for the minstrel character Allan-A-Dale. The film is ably directed by Wolfgang Reitherman, whose decades of work in Disney's animation division helped create the studio's rich legacy. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Brought back childhood memories!.......2007-09-12

I grew up watching this movie with childhood friends from church. When I got the dvd in the mail, I emailed all my friends and told them that we need to get together for a Robin Hood reunion. (Note that this review was written in 2007 and all of my friends and I are now age 24-30.) Anyway, it was surprising how all of us sang along to songs we hadn't heard on over 15-20 years. Great movie! It brought back a lot of good childhood memories.

Robin hood is Disney at its best in the classic animation style. The voices for the characters are perfect. Great story line, and wonderfully done.

Starting with 1971's Bananas, Woody Allen's second film as director, this set of eight movies includes all of Allen's work as a director up to 1980, when he wrestled with his own popularity in the Fellini-esque Stardust Memories, showcasing the distinctive arc of a filmmaker who moved from lighthearted movies to more serious fare that still remains breathtaking after 20 years. In between those two movies, there are wonderful trips of comedy, tragedy and romance to be had. Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex but Were Afraid to Ask is a hilarious set of vignettes based on the popular instructional manual, the most notable a segment featuring Gene Wilder's infatuation with a female sheep. The futuristic Sleeper and the underrated Love and Death showcase Allen at his funniest, especially the latter, which tackles the weighty subjects of Russian novels and Bergman films with adroit parody.

Allen's Oscar-winning Annie Hall is one of the most joyous (and melancholy) romances ever made, with a star-making turn by Diane Keaton and a witty screenplay (cowritten with Marshall Brickman) that remains one of Allen's best. Allen did a 180 with the Bergman-esque Interiors, a sometimes stilted drama that nonetheless presaged the dysfunctional-family drama of films like Ordinary People and featured outstanding performances by Geraldine Page and Mary Beth Hurt, as well as unparalleled cinematography by Gordon Willis. The last two films in the set--the romantic Manhattan and the acidic Stardust Memories--are both gorgeously shot in black and white and represent Allen at the peak of his creative powers, as he wrestles with the meaning of life in terms of both love and art, albeit from different perspectives. Indispensable to any film fan, this boxed set represents nothing less than a landmark of American cinema. --Mark Englehart

4 out of 5 stars Prelude to the Later Masterpieces.......2007-09-16

I've seen these films over the the years numerous times, never really loved them, but recognize them now as the necessary practice of a developing talent, who has grown enormously over the years. Yes, "Annie Hall" is a kick, but compared to "Crimes and Misdemeanors," "Hannah and Her Sisters," and "Deconstructing Harry," it must be seen as a young work, well-conceived, but lacking the depth of his more mature work. Others disagree, of course, and why not? There are numerous bright spots in these films. Certainly "Manhattan" is a unique love-poem to the city. Woody's preoccupation with Dostoevsky is shown to great affect in "Love and Death," but all in all I prefer his late work, and believe that Mia Farrow played a crucial role in inspiring his mature phase. Woody himself has expressed reservations for his work overall. There are indeed limitations, and it is doubtful that he will ever be compared to the greats. But he is certainly great enough for me. He remains the most exciting director of our generation.

5 out of 5 stars It doesn't get much better than this..........2005-06-18

No one will doubt that Woody Allen is the only director who has consistently mastered the art of writing and directing intelligent, funny, unforgettable stories. These films are great examples of that. Fromk Annie Hall to Sleeper [I haven't viewed Stardust Memories yet], you will be completely satisfied with your purchase. Here's an overview of the films:

Annie Hall: Allem's best film, hands down. The story of a couple who meets in a New York tennis club. Allen plays Alvy Singer, a carbon copy of Allen's stereotypical self [neurotic, clumsy, "suave"], while Keaton, who gives a stunning performance, plays Annie Hall, a country girl from Wisconsin trying to find a life in New York. A great story about relationships. The last paragraph that Allen narrates is fabulous. Don't watch this film first, or you may not appreciate Allen's other work as much!

Bananas: On the sillier side, this film is about Fielding Mellish, another character based on himself. Mellish works for a large corporation. Testing products. If you are at all familiar with Allen, you already know that there is a witty scene coming up. Mellish travels to the small Latin American country of San Marcos to find something to do. He ends up becoming the communist dictator there, and that is all I will say.

Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex* *But were afraid to ask: A great satire on the popular book. This is a series of seven small sex stories, varying from Gene Wilder's affair with a sheep to a giant, deadly mammary. Watch for Allen's coolest role as Fabrizio, the Italian.

Interiors: A stunning film [very serious] about a wealthy Long Island family that steers away from the mother. This film is beautifully shot, and it really pays a lot of attention to showing every aspect of every character. Tension builds quickly, and it stays until the end.

Love and Death: One of my personal top five Allen films. This one is about Napoleon trying to take over Russia. Allen plays Boris Grushenko, a Russian Catholic, who falls in love with his distant cousin, Sonja [Keaton]. This one is nonstop laughs, but only if you are familiar with the war and the works of Russian writers. It is still very funny otherwise, but not as deeply funny.

Manhattan: Similar to Annie Hall, but a little different. Allen plays Isaac Davis, who falls in love with a seventeen year old [Mariel Hemingway], and also with Mary [Keaton], an overly pretentious New Yorker at the same time. This story is again about relationship, but this one is extreme. Shot in black and white, and accompanied by a George Gershwin soundtrack, many Allen fans consider this film his love letter to New York City. It is also considered his best by many people. I think he has made better, but this is a stunning film.

Sleeper: Sleeper is 'Love and Death' set in the future. A great film about Allen, who is frozen in 1973, and defrosted 200 years later. Great jokes, chase scenes, and more. In one scene, Diane Keaton and a leader of a revolutionist underground organization re-create scenes from his childhood. Another joke about the NRA. Sleeper is probably the best film to see if one wants a good introduction to Allen's style.

All in all, this collection is a must-own. Also, at less than ten dollars per DVD, no fan should pass this up. Separately, they cost more. Buy this today and you will be granted a good taste in motion pictures!

5 out of 5 stars Steve McQueen.......2007-09-10

Steve McQueen's star started to shine with this fun series about an 1800's western bounty hunter. I became a big fan of his and he never has diminished as the prototype of an upbeat action hero. He was successful in motion pictures after this series and in my opinion earned his stripes in "The Great Escape", "The Magnificent Seven" and Bullett with his rugged portrayals of a "different" but very admirable and upbeat hero.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic TV Western.......2007-08-23

Wanted Dead or Alive is one of the best Western shows created during the golden era of TV Westerns in the late 50s and early 60s. In my opinion, Season 2 of Wanted Dead or Alive is the better of than Season 1. I have not seen Season 3 yet so I cannot comment on it. The main reason I prefer Season 2 is due to the change in demeanor and personality of the main character, Josh Randall. In this season, Josh Randall undergoes a major overhaul. In Season 1 he was a pretty normal and straight guy who didn't have much personality. In Season 2, Steve McQueen does a 180 degree turn and makes the Randall character a truly fascinating and somewhat humorous person. His dry sense of humor and perfect delivery of one-liners make the Randall character one of the most memorable and entertaining in TV Westerns history. I suspect this is one of the main reasons why the First Season finished at number 16 in the TV ratings while Season 2 finished at number 9. The plots are extremely well thought out and very suspenseful. If it's possible to put a human face on a bounty hunter, Wanted Dead or Alive does it. Randall's philosophy throughout each episode is basically this: If I bring you in, at least you'll get a fair trial. If someone else finds you, they'll simply kill you and collect and reward money. This makes Randall the bounty hunter seem like a compassionate and caring rescuer in comparison to the other bounty hunters. One strange thing about Season 2 is that near the end of the series, a side kick named Jason is introduced to help Randall track down wanted men. I prefer the show when Randall works alone. Giving screen time to Jason means less screen time for Randall resulting in a decrease of entertainment. Season 2 is well worth the investment. In my opinion, the only western show that surpasses Wanted Dead or Alive in quality is Gunsmoke.

4 out of 5 stars Wanted:Dead or Alive season 2.......2007-08-10

I just wanted to say im glad season 2 was finally released.I was a big fan and havnt saw the show in a long time.McQueen was at his best in this series, they dont make em like it any more.I thought the quality of the set was great, the only thing i would have like to have seen was some colorized episodes like was in season 1.But over all I was very pleased, hope to see season 3 coming out soon.
Thanks Leo

5 out of 5 stars Improved packaging, but almost no extras........2007-07-30

Apparently someone other than consumers reads these reviews, because the packaging people hated from the first season is gone. Instead of a light cardboard wrapper around 4 hard plastic DVD holders kept in place by tape, the new season has the 4 DVDs in flexible plastic, ultra-thin boxes. The DVDs are held securely, but can be easily removed without bending or cracking either the DVD or case.

I'm also happier with single-sided DVDs in this season, instead of the double-sided ones from the first season. Unfortunately, where the first season had 8 DVD sides to work with and numerous extras, this season had only 4 DVD sides of episodes and almost no extras. In fact, there seems to be no subtitles or closed captions, although there is audio in both English and French. While I'm amused by the French language track, I'd prefer subtitles or captions. I would've been happier with an additional DVD or so to allow for extras. Then again, there were so many extras on the first set, maybe they used up all they had.

Contrary to what Amazon's description says, this set is B&W, not colorized. I'm grateful they were wrong.

4 out of 5 stars Episodes great; getting to them a bit tricky.......2007-07-26

Truth to be told, the wait for these episodes would make almost any trouble negligible!! However, it's possible the DVDs I got were somewhat defective. The last disc would not let me access the second screen of the individual episodes. I had to resort to playing all the episodes and fast-forwarding through the prior episodes to reach those I hadn't watched. The access is tricky, if you simply "page down," you end up back at the main menu. However, if you use the right-hand directional button, you can reach the second screen and the other four episodes. At least this worked on the first three discs.

    Description

"Wanted: Dead or Alive", the hit television series that launched the career of Steve McQueen ("Bullitt", "The Getaway, "The Thomas Crown Affair") in 1958 as gentleman bounty hunter Josh Randall. The character, originally introduced in an episode of the television Western Trackdown, was so popular that the production company created "Wanted: Dead or Alive" so that McQueen could reprise the role of Randall. Josh Randall was not a typical rough-hewn bounty hunter of the Old West; he was a consummate gentleman who always gave half - or even all - of his reward money to charity. He was a man of few words, and, unlike most bounty hunters, he carried neither a shotgun nor a rifle but rather an 1892 Winchester lever action pistol, which he wore on his belt and fondly called his "Mare's leg." Josh Randall's catch phrase, "Let's go," launched him into unforgettable, classic Western adventures. A collection of vignettes, loosely based on the book by Dr. David Rueben, written and directed by Woody Allen, Everything contains some very funny moments. It's easy to forget that the cerebral Allen excelled at the type of broad, Catskill, dirty jokes and visual gags that run amok here. It's also remarkable how dirty this 1972 movie really was--bestiality, exposure, perversion, and S&M get their moments to shine. The Woody Allen here, who appears in many of the sketches, is a portent of the seedy old Allen of Deconstructing Harry. Although the final bit, which takes place inside a man's body during a very hot date, is hilarious, most of Everything feels like the screen adaptation of a '70s bathroom joke book. Still, a must for Allen fans. --Keith Simanton

    Description

Woody Allen pushes the frontiers of comedy by consolidating his madcap sensibility and wickedly funny irreverence with his developing penchant for visually arresting humor. Giving complete indulgenceto the zany eccentricity of his medium, Allen reveals himself as a filmmaker of "wit, sophistication, and comic insight" (Cue). Allen rises to the occasion with several hysterical vignettes that probe sexuality's stickiest issues! Aphrodisiacs prove effective for a court jester (Allen) who finds the key to the Queen's (Lynn Redgrave) heartbut learns that the key to her chastitybelt might be more useful. Unnatural acts get wild and wooly when a good doctor (Gene Wilder) fallsfor a fickle sheep. Jack Barry gives fetishism 20 questions on a wacky TV show called "What's My Perversion?" Sex-research goes under the microscope when a mad scientist (John Carradine) unleashes a monstrous, marauding breast. And the absurdity comes to a frenzied climax with Tony Randall, Burt Reynolds and Allen as sperm having second thoughts about ejaculation!

3 out of 5 stars An uneven collection of sketches mixing superb comedy with a dated feel.......2007-09-11

In the late 1960s one Dr David Reuben released a book entitled EVERYTHING YOU WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT SEX *BUT WERE AFRAID TO ASK. Woody Allen's 1972 "movie adaptation" uses the questions of Dr Reuben's question-and-answer format as the titles for 7 comedic sketches all on sexual themes. This was Allen's third conventional film, and his growing importance in Hollywood is evident from the film's all-star cast.

The opening "Do Aphrodisiacs Work?", set in medieval times, has Woody Allen as a court jester who seeks to seduce the queen. Most of the humour here consists of anachronism: the jester's jokes are too bad for even a borscht belt comedian, and the dialogue consists of Elizabethian stylings mixed with sexual terminology and crude slang from the present.

The following sketch, "What is Sodomy?", is for many viewers the very best. A New York City general practitioner (Gene Wilder) is visited by an Armenian shepherd () who begs the doctor to restore the magic to relationship of him and a cherished sheep. What ensues, with the doctor descending ever deeper into madness, is made hilarious by Wilder's committed performance and the dialogue is immensely quotable. Another high point of the film is "Why Do Some Women Have Trouble Reaching an Orgasm?". Shot in black and white and with an Italian dialogue, the segment is Allen's hommage to the cool ambience of Antonioni and Fellini. Allen plays a suave, sunglasses-wearing film director who cannot manage to satisfy his wife, played by Louise Lasser, until they begin having risky sex in public places. The fun comes not only in the challenges the man must face in making his wife happy, but also in Allen's ridiculous accent while speaking Italian.

In "Are Transvestites Homosexuals?", Lou Jacobi plays a man who sneaks upstairs while at a dinner party in order to wear his hostess' clothes, and subsequently gets himself deeper and deeper in trouble. It's humorous enough, but one wonders if this segment were stronger when the film was first released. Judging from its high frequency in big Hollywood films of the 1960s and early 1970s, crossdressing must have once been a much funnier concept in that era. The following "What Are Sex Perverts?" is a parody of the game show What's My Line? where a panel of minor celebrities try to guess the perversion of a contestant, who wins $5 for every wrong guess. This is quite funny, but far too brief, as the concept could have been stretched out a bit more.

"Are the Findings of Doctors and Clinics Who Do Sexual Research and Experiments Accurate?" is a Frankenstein parody where Allen and Heather MacRae play recently acquainted sex researchers who meet a great sexologist (John Carradine), only to discover that he's a diabolical madman. The first half of this segment is pretty funny, as Allen and MacRae make their way through the doctor's castle of horrors. But the second half, when the pair seeks to defeat a giant breast ravaging the countryside, is some of the lamest humour I've seen in some time.

The characters of the last segment, "What Happens During Ejaculation?", are personifications of the organs as a man goes on a date with a woman. The brain is depicted as a NASA mission control, with Tony Randall and Burt Reynolds struggling to coordinate bodily functions. They call down to the stomach (men carting off a newly-arrived load of fettucini), and the genitals (blue-collar joes working an enormous pump), as well as other places. Much here will make you chuckle, such as the captured "saboteur" of the man's sexual ambitions, his conscience, depicted as a priest in a Roman collar, and Allen's performance as a sperm cell terrified of making the leap into the unknown. All in all, however, I find this quite dated as well.

While my overall impressions is that EVERYTHING YOU WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT SEX is quite dated, it's funny enough, and the portions with Allen as an Italian lover and Wilder as a befuddled doctor make it worth seeing at least once.

5 out of 5 stars One of Woody Allen's Funniest Films..........2006-12-28

Before "Annie Hall," Woody Allen's comedy was very different. Rather than the mature quips that any Woody Allen fan is used to post-Annie Hall, most of the movies made before that are wacky, hilarious, and out-there bits that show (nowadays) Woody Allen's comedic range. "Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex*But Were Afraid to Ask" is a series of vignettes with Allen "answering" (supposedly) real questions. Usually in an unconventional, yet hilarious, way. Here is a brief synopsis of each:

    1. Do Aphrodisiacs Work-Starring Allen and Lynn Redgrave, this story takes place near the Renaissance Period. Allen plays The Fool, the king's comedian who fails to impress anybody with his humor. The reason for this is, likely, because The Fool is written as a modern man placed in ancient times. Desperately wanting to have relations with The Queen (Redgrave), he gets a potion from a sorcerer before meeting his untimely end.

    2. What is Sodomy-Gene Wilder plays a doctor who is shocked to learn that an Armenian shepherd has had sex with one of his sheep. When the man brings the sheep in, the doctor finds himself falling in love and conducting an affair with a sheep. Sounds morbid, but is just used as a (slightly insane) metaphor.

    3. Why Do Some Women Have Trouble Reaching an Orgasm-This vignette is in Italian (I think) and stars Allen as a Marcello Mastroianni-like Italian man who has recently married. Problem is, he can't give his wife an orgasm...Except in a public place.

    4. Are Transvestites Gay-In this one, a man goes to his daughter's fiancées parents house for dinner with his wife. Once there, he goes to the bathroom but finds himself in the room of the parents trying on the mothers clothing. Everything is fine, until he is forced to flee out a window and finds his purse snatched outside.

    5. What Are Sex Perverts-In black & white, this vignette is about a gameshow in which people come on and reveal their perversions. Watch for a young Regis Philbin (looking very different, but with the same unmistakable voice) as himself.

    6. Are the Findings of Doctors, Who Do Sexual Research, Accurate-This stars Allen as a man traveling to see a world-famous sexual research doctor. Picking up a pretty blonde reporter along the way, he finds the man to be insane and attempting to use them for his experiments. Pretty soon, a giant killer breast is on the loose.

    7. What Happens During Ejaculation-This stars Burt Reynolds and Woody Allen as some workers in a man's body, controlling what he does. Allen plays a sperm that is scared about being "sent out" into the world.

The film contains lots of metaphors, lots of double-entendres, and lots of hilarity. Despite it's subject matter, it's not graphic. There's no nudity or anything. The movie has a large cast and is easily one of the funniest films Woody Allen has ever done. Every vignette is good and none of them overstay their welcome (the film is only 88 minutes). The movie is so different from other Woody Allen material that it's possible that people who DON'T like Woody Allen might enjoy this movie. It's one of his finest.
    GRADE: A-

3 out of 5 stars Singular Hiccup in an Otherwise Great Series of Comedies.......2006-07-03

From 1969's Take the Money & Run to well into the 80's, Allen created a series of comedies that established him as one of the preeminant writer/director/actor one-man-bands in the history of moviemaking. An argument can be made that Allen didn't really run out of gas until the mid nineties and the Soon-Yi & Mia Farrow public relations debacle trashed his image forever. The danger of filming a series of skits is, inevitably, some skits are going to be stronger than others. Thus, EYAWKASBWAA is a mixed bag with generally blah results. Allen starts the movie in fool's motley and ends dressed as a sperm. In between is some really funny stuff and some really tedious stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Silly Allen is good Allen.......2006-04-17

`Everything You Always To Know About Sex' is probably the last time Woody Allen really fooled about and made an ass of himself with minimal artistic pretences, and given the mediocre quality of recent disposable duds like `Melinda & Melinda' and `Anything Else', it's quite refreshing. True, this 1972 collection of extremely lewd skits isn't quite as impressive and thought-provoking as some of Allen's best works, like `Annie Hall', `Manhattan' or for that matter even the follow-up `Sleeper'; yet there's an energy to `Everything You Always Wanted To Know' that Allen has not shown for at least a decade, and in that light it's still entirely classic.

If anything, the film is closest in its spirit to early Allen films like `Bananas' and `Sleeper', but it actually feels more like a British comedy, and is clearly influenced by shows like `Monty Python's Flying Circus' and `The Benny Hill Show', in it's chaotic and rude humor. Still, Allen's mark is all over the skits, even when he isn't in them. One of the best of the bunch, in fact, is the skit titled `What Is Sodomy', which stars Gene Wilder. Influences of both Monty Python and Mel Brooks can be felt in it, but it's entirely Allen; and still, it's Wilder that makes it perfect. Even more Pythonish is the fabricated game-show `What's Your Perversion'.

The best and most memorable is the last skit, entitled `What Happens During Ejaculation', in which Allen does a wonderful portrayal of a sperm, and we catch a glimpse of the action in the control room of a man's body during sexual intercourse. The skit is brilliantly satirical and ranks with Allen's best moments, nearly overshadowing the rest of the film. Still, it's not without it's unforgettable moments; other than Wilder, also worthy of special praise is John Carradine who is wonderful as the ultimate parody of a mad scientist, and let's not forget Woody Allen as a fool in the Middle Ages misquoting Hamlet and getting his hand stuck up the Queen's chastity belt, and his wonderful performance as an Italian Casanova.

So no, it's not quite one of Allen's best films, but it's close. The humor is dirty, yes, but not childish; Allen's intelligence is there, but it's much lighter than `Annie Hall' or other classics, and like a Monty Python or a Mel Brooks it bears multiple viewings. A movie that's funny as hell, essential for Allen fans, and recommended for all.

5 out of 5 stars "My gynecologist told me to avoid excitement!".......2006-01-20

Every bit of Woody Allen's film is funny, but Lou Jacobi's performance in "What Is A Transvestite?" has to be one of the most hilarious performances in cinema history! For that alone, you must buy this DVD for your collection.

BUT...it would be NICE if Amazon would consider adjusting the product information to reflect what they're selling, and not, apparently, the Rutger Hauer movie of the same name. It's a little difficult for someone who may not be highly familiar with this classic television series to buy it, when EVERYTHING in the product listing was apparently lifted from the other item (probably the vhs form of the movie, no less) rather than someone taking the time to give the correct information for the actual product - a classic television series that deserves far better treatment. C'mon, Amazon...FIX IT! Steve McQueen should at least be getting credit where credit is due!

5 out of 5 stars GOOD GUYS - BAD GUYS .......2007-06-15

The mystery and intrigue sets an excellent pace to figuring who to root for.
Nick Randall, bounty hunter - the hunted deserved everything they got.
Don't mess with his friend or his girl. Or there will be hell to pay.

Malak Al Rahim - made one huge mistake - he messed with both.

Randall was smart enough to make the stake-out and his FBI friend made him. The stake-out was stupid enough to walk into his end.

Really like the loft living area that Randall had and kept his friend's bike there. Ah well, the blonde wig done him in.

Rutger Hauer can not top "Ladyhawk"'s Navarre for a romantic image but his Randall character [and others] "Blind Fury" and "Split Secong" - just prove his acting ability - oh yes, "Bladerunner" [gross] to mention a few.

DEFINITELY RECOMMENDED - great collection for viewing.

4 out of 5 stars Pointless 80's Action Hero Drivel - But Fun To Watch!.......2007-05-11

Wanted Dead Or Alive was one of those out-of-control lone wolf cop movies that came out in droves in the mid-to-late 80s. All these movies (Cobra, Runaway, Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, etc....) aspired to be Dirty Harry. Some succeeded, most did not. Wanted Dead or Alive was Rutger Hauer's turn at playing the vigilante cop living on the edge. Watching it now, this movie is hilarious. Since his role as the terrorist in Night Hawks (Sylvester Stallone & Bily Dee Willams) and his role as the psycho in The Hitcher, Hauer seemed to be lapsing in the tough-as nails roles. Wanted Dead Or Alve does nothing to bring him back. Rutger Hauer is one of those actors that just play a better villian. As a villian, Hauer is creepy, vile, ruthless and cold. As the good guy, just not as believable. The saving grace of this predictable action cop movie is Gene Simmons (KISS) as the evil terrorist. He must have taken notes from Hauer, because he is ruthless and cold. He shoots without flinching. Great role for him. Overall, Wanted Dead or Alive is a fun watch mostly for the nostalgic 80s feel and for Gene Simmons'turn as a psycho killer.

Randolph Scott's movie-star reputation was redeemed late in the day by Budd Boetticher's remarkable "Ranown" films in the late '50s and Sam Peckinpah's sublime Ride the High Country, Scott's swan song, in 1962. Ten Wanted Men typifies the pictures his career needed redeeming from--formula oaters that are workmanlike at best and suitable for recommending only to confirmed fans of the genre.

Scott plays a well-to-do rancher who sends for his lawyer brother (Lester Matthews) to help civilize his corner of the Southwest. That's enough to tick off Scott's chief rival and former protégé, Richard Boone, who gets even more irritated when Scott's nephew charms the local señorita Boone has been wooing in his heavy-handed way. His reaction is to import a passel of gunslinging plug-uglies and start making life miserable for everybody.

Boone would prove a superb adversary to Scott in The Tall T two years later, but here he just flails. Scott's character is possibly the most irritatingly self-righteous he ever played, so he scarcely bothers to play it at all. Bruce Humberstone's lax direction leaves no doubt when a stunt double has stepped in for Scott, and if a gunshot happens to fill the frame with smoke, you can count on the air being clear as a bell in the next camera angle. The only mildly interesting thing to wonder about in Ten Wanted Men (apart from exactly which 10 the title refers to) is how elements of Billy the Kid and the Lincoln County War came to be grafted onto the otherwise nondescript plot. --Richard T. Jameson

    Description

Randolph Scott rides tall in the saddle as a powerful cattle rancher in this action-packed western. Scott, who made a noteworthy contribution to this genre in the late 50's as a lean, mean cowboy, stars as John Stewart, an Arizona rancher determined to rule his vast empire with strong willed integrity. Stewart meets with opposition, however, from local landowner Wick Campbell (Richard Boone) who prefers the persuasive power of the pistol to the letter of the law. Suddenly Stewart is forced to defend himself and the woman he loves, Jocelyn Brando) against Campbell's renegades who are determined to ransack the town. Now Stewart must take a life-and-death stand in a rugged confrontation that pits one man of justice against the overwhelming odds of TEN WANTED MEN.

Columbia Pictures presents "TEN WANTED MEN" (1955) (80 mins/Color) (Dolby digitally remastered) --- Starring Randolph Scott, Richard Boone, Jocelyn Brando, Leo Gordon, Lee Van Cleef & Skip Homeier --- Directed by H. Bruce Humberstone and released in February 1, 1955, our story line and film, A powerful rancher John Stewart, attempts to establish law and order on his vast Arizona spread without resorting to violence ... Less peacefully inclined is Stewart's chief rival Wick Campbell, who believes that might is right. To this end, Campbell recruits the services of hired gun Frank Scavo and eight other henchmen to drive all competition out of the territory ... Complicating matters is a dispute between Stewart & Campbell over a Mexican girl that Stewart's been sheltering ... Caught up in all this is Stewart's newly arrived brother Adam and his nephew Howie who falls in love with the Mexican girl, much to Campbell's chargrin --- Richard Boone in a strong supporting role --- Some wonderful character actors from the early B-Westerns days Terry Frost, Leo Gordon, Reed Howes, Francis McDonald, Jack Perrin and Denver Pyle, even Dennis Weaver and Lee Van Cleef join in the fun --- And Mr. Scott was secure enough in his stardom that he gave good lines and depth to the younger actors in the film.

Under H. Bruce Humberstone (Director), Harry Joe Brown (Producer), Harriet Frank, Jr. (Short Story Author), Kenneth Gamet (Screenwriter), Irving Ravetch (Short Story Author),Wilfrid M. Cline (Cinematographer), Paul Sawtell (Composer (Music Score), Gene Havlick (Editor) - - - - the cast includes Randolph Scott (John Stewart), Jocelyn Brando (Corinne Michaels), Richard Boone (Wick Campbell), Alfonso Bedoya (Hermando), Skip Homeier (Howie Stewart), Leo Gordon (Frank Scavo), Lee Van Cleef (Al Drucker), Denver Pyle (Dave Weed), Donna Martell (Maria Segura), Clem Bevans (Tod Grinnel), Minor Watson (Jason Carr), Lester Matthews (Adam Stewart), Tom Powers (Green), Dennis Weaver (Sheriff Clyde Gibbons), Louis Jean Heydt (Tom Baines), Kathleen Crowley (Marva Gibbons), Boyd "Red" Morgan (Red Dawes), Francis McDonald (Warner), George Pat Collins (Bartender), Jack Perrin, Reed Howes, Terry Frost - - - - Randy Scott had a quiet gentleman nature about him which is not seen in the films of today ... Randy took his job and his responsibility to his audience very seriously --- would not settle for anything less than his best ... same was true in his personal life.

(1943) and "Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm" (1938); but he was especially famous for his numerous Westerns including "Virginia City" (1940) with Errol Flynn and Humphrey Bogart, "Western Union" (1941) with Robert Young and "Ride the High Country" (1962) with Joel McCrea (a coin was flipped to see whether Scott or McCrea would receive top billing, and Scott won despite having a slightly smaller role) ... his long fistfight with John Wayne in "The Spoilers" (1942) was frequently cited by critics and the press as the most thrilling ever filmed; they were fighting over Marlene Dietrich ... another smash hit film together that same year called "Pittsburgh" (1942) once again with Dietrich, Scott and Wayne --- Daniel Webster defines "Legend", as being a notable person, or the stories told about that person exploits --- well by the time Randolph Scott made his best films he had long established himself as a legend in the film industry --- they say practice makes perfect, if that is true by 1958 at 60 years of age he was the master with these oaters from the 50s ... "The Cariboo Trail" (1950), "The Nevadan" (1950), "Colt .45" (1950), "Santa Fe" (1951), "Sugarfoot" (1951), "Fort Worth" (1951), "Man in the Saddle" (1951), "Carson City" (1952), "The Man Behind the Gun" (1952), "Hangman's Knot" (1952), "Thunder over the Plains" (1953), "The Stranger Wore a Gun" (1953), "Ten Wanted Men" (1954), "Riding Shotgun" (1954), "The Bounty Hunter" (1954), "Rage at Dawn" (1955), "Tall Man Riding" (1955), "A Lawless Street" (1955), "Seven Men from Now" (1956), "Seventh Cavalry" (1956), "Decision at Sundown: (1957), "Shoot-Out at Medicine Bend" (1957), "The Tall T" (1957), "Buchanan Rides Alone" (1958), "Ride Lonesome" (1959), "Westbound" (1959), "Comanche Station" (1960) --- Scott's age seemed to matter little, they only came to see another Randolph Scott film and always got their money's worth --- Scott's films were good and getting better becoming classics --- so if you wonder "What Ever Happened To Randolph Scott", just rent or purchase one of his films and you'll see he's never left us.

    5 out of 5 stars Underrated Gem.......2006-05-23

i don't know why anyone gives this film less than five star rating and on top of it praise the budd boetichher westerns. though boeticher films are great, i find the pre-boetciher-scott westerns the best as there are more traditional and less talky and grim than the boeticher westerns. Ten wanted men is no exception; it is fast paced, well-plotted and has plenty of intense action to keep your eyes peeled. definately one of scott's best. sometimes i find that in the scott-boeticher westerns, there's too much talking and walking around with some pretentious talk that can drag the film down.

4 out of 5 stars Ten Wanted Men 1954.......2006-04-11

Randolph Scott (1898-1987) rides tall in the saddle as a powerful cattle rancher in this action-packed Western , Scott how made a noteworthy contribution to this genre in the late 1950s as lean , mean cowboy , stars as John Stewart , an Arizona Rancher determined to rule his vast empire with strong-willed integrity . Stewart meets with appostions , however from local landowner Wick Campbell (Richard Boone 1917-1981) who preferes the persuasive power of the pistol to the letter of the law . Suddenly Stewart is Forced to Defend himself and the Women he Loves (Jocelyn Brando 1919-2005 , older sister of Marlon Brandon 1924-2004) against Campbell?s renegates who are determined to ransack the town .Now Stewart must take a life-and-death stand in rugged controntation that pits aone man of justice against the Owerwhelming odds of TEN WANTED MAN .This is a superb plot and great movie . High Quality digital transfer . Recommended

3 out of 5 stars Good, middlin' Scott Western.......2005-08-14

While Columbia studios' TEN WANTED MEN is not a top drawer Western like COMANCHE STATION or RIDE LONESOME of a few years later, it is never less than entertaining---the kind of "super B" feature that enthralled sagebrush-addicts back in the 1950s. Certainly this is no Budd Boetticher directed product, and it lacks his stunning, distinctive touches, but there is enough action to keep any fan glued to his TV set. Richard Boone, who appeared in a number of Randy Scott's 1950s Westerns (most notably in THE TALL T), stands out as a superbly drawn villain. And Scott is always excellent.

2 out of 5 stars Fair To Middling Scott Western.......2005-07-22

Ten Wanted Men, as many of Randolph Scott's other fifties Westerns, suffers in comparison to the Budd Boetticher-directed Westerns featuring Scott. Once again, as with some of the non-Boetticher Scott films, this movie has a great cast, interesting plot features, and lots of potential, but the payoff is not as great as it should be.

Scott plays a rancher who takes in a young Mexican woman who is being relentlessly pursued by Richard Boone, who is a rancher coveting Scott's vast land holdings. Scott's generosity toward the woman gives Boone the perfect excuse to start trouble, and he hires a gang of thugs, including Leo Gordon and Lee Van Cleef, to terrorize and try to kill Scott, Scott's brother, and Scott's nephew.

Boone, who is one of the alltime great Western actors, seems out of place as a desperate cad who has to hire other men to do his dirty work. Also, this film contains many elements of Scott's other movies, and rather than seeming fond and comfortable, they seem tired and warmed over.

Scott is Scott, and that says a lot. He was often criticized for his perceived lack of acting ability, but there was a humanity and honesty about his characters that drew audiences to him then, and still works today, making him one of the most appealing American actors. But Ten Wanted Men would have been better served by Boetticher, Raoul Walsh, or another capable Western director.

Malibu's Most Wanted stars Jamie Kennedy (Scream) as a white boy named Brad (or, as he prefers it, B-Rad) from the beach community north of L.A. who thinks he's a hip-hop star on the verge of discovery. His wannabe rap star persona is an embarrassment to his father's political campaign, so his father's handlers hire two actors (Anthony Anderson and Taye Diggs) to pretend to be ghetto gangsters, kidnap B-Rad, and "scare the black out of him." The movie's main source of comedy is that these prissy actors are no more street than B-Rad, so they're posing even more than he is. Malibu's Most Wanted isn't the Scary Movie-style lampoon you might expect; it's actually a surprisingly earnest character comedy about the cultural behaviors people use to identify themselves. This approach may get in the way of some potential laughs, but it also gives the movie some heart. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars funny and crazy.......2007-05-01

I enjoyed this movie very much a guy name Jamie Kennedy that is known as B-Rad as Brad been acting like he is a gangsta... not a bad movie... most of the parts I laughed but it worth my time enjoy watching comedy movies like this one... also I know an actor who played small part in this movie his name was Terry Crews known as 8 Ball he played in White Chicks

    4 out of 5 stars Fun, light-hearted comedy.......2007-03-14

When young B-Rad's dad, a local politician is trying to boost his career the last thing he wants is his son, wannabe rapper B-Rad showing up and ruining his pep rally with his rap lyrics and funky friends. When B-Rad's antics nearly cost him the election, a close advisor suggests staging a fake kidnap to scare him into embracing his own culture. He hires two black actors (humorously portrayed by Anthony Anderson and Taye Diggs)who pose as thugs and kidnap B-Rad with unexpected consequences.

This was a really funny film. I thought Jamie Kennedy did an excellent job with his portrayal of young Brad, and I thought the scenes with the Psychiatrist and the Korean store clerks were funny. 4 stars!

    3 out of 5 stars Great Comedy.......2007-01-11

This is a great movie to, watch, lots of hilarious scenes as well. Dont forget the directors commentary as well.

The movie is on double sided DVD so u have to be extra careful when handling.

    2 out of 5 stars A ghetto movie about A feminem wannabe. 2/5 stars.......2006-12-10

I hate these stupid movies with white idiots who think their black and try to act like a tough gangter even as mallcore. Jamie kennedy plays a slim shady moron who thinks he's black and calls himself B-rad which I think is so pathetic and even offensive to try and act black which he's really not. So I don't believe that B-rad is a true bad a** gangster rapper I think he's a huge moron who can't act his own age and race. The reason I gave it 2 stars is because of that one scene at the club where B-rad trys to do his own rap battle attack (which he really sucks at) against the real tough rappers who they all despised B-rad. That was the most funniest scene in this movie that cracked me up til I cried. But still I hate this movie and I hate hip hop.

    4 out of 5 stars "Let's start droppin' bodies!".......2006-07-06

I don't know if I can truly explain how funny `Malibu's Most Wanted' is. This is a film that speaks for itself so I just recommend you watch it. Jaime Kennedy plays B-Rad (Brad is his slave name), a young rich white boy whose father is running for mayor of Malibu. B-Rad's father pays two gay black actors (Taye Diggs & Anthony Anderson) to stage a kidnapping and un-ghetto his son. They enroll the help of Taye's sister (Regina Hall) to help them out. From there on out the film is hilarious, from Jaime's wigger antics to the fact that he's `blacker' than both Diggs and Anderson combined. There are plenty of laughs and that's the important part. The film pokes fun at the `ghetto' mentality and at stereotypes we all embellish, but for the most part it's good clean fun and a riot from start to finish. For me to say there's an underlying moral message here about acceptance and the willingness to be who you are despite what anyone says would be pointless for no one's going to watch this movie for a message, but for me to say that you'll laugh your @$$ off would be appropriate for this is the whole reason to watch. We support the bit*h's and ho's!
