4 out of 5 stars Good message of the story, dark, and manipulative directing of the movie........2007-09-10

The message I got from the movie is that no one is greater or any less than anyone else. The message, about the equality, is exactly the way God views people. God does not favor one over the other.

There were many other things that were said in the movie that were Biblical. For example, letting go of sins, pleasures of this world, as well as the most important, a lying spirit (in the movie portrayed as evil self)...

I liked the title and bought the DVD, but I had to be patient. And so will yo. The movie is a bit slow in the beginning and kind of creepy. I expected it to be more beautiful, more colorful, peaceful may be?... But it wasn't, at least not until curtain climaxes. I'd say it's pretty dark for the most part and pretty uplifting in other.

Also, the message although good, is mixed with tons of Biblical teachings as I've said before, but Buddah is mentioned rather in a respective way in the movie and Jesus is mentioned in a form of guys cursing at each other, like "well, Jesus man, blah, blah...". I donno about the book, but it was clear to me that the directors of it tried to give a new age impression of the movie to the viewer. Which they failed, because the message taken from the book pierced through and spoke to a heart that hears. Even the writer of the book admitted that the producers tried to do their own thing with the movie, which resulted with having lots of flaws, but he says that the main message cut through the flaws and will only motivate the viewer to actually buy the book after watching the movie because they'll want to learn more. So I recommend to watch it, but read the book regardless! Hope that was helpful.

All the best,

God bless,

Nick

This movie had a powerful message--still something was missing and I cannot put my finger on it!
A good story for anyone confused about their place in life.
Maybe the book is better.

5 out of 5 stars Happiness Surely Is In The Journey!.......2007-09-04

The inspirational unfolding of a young man, who at such a young college age, realizes there's more to life than beer, fun, sex and girls. How refreshing to sit back and watch this movie!

Anyone with an ounce of purpose or passion can relate to this fabulous story. Who doesn't have a dream?

I was given this DVD by a friend of mine. It sat on the bookshelf for about a month until just last night when I was bored and decided to watch a movie. So, I popped 'Peaceful Warrior' into the DVD player. Not knowing what to expect (I had never heard of Dan Millman), I must say I was intriqued from the beginning. I was also elated to read that it was inspired by true events. I watched it a second time within 24 hours.

Yes, one must empty the trash they've accumulated over the years from parents, education, and society. Discovering who we really are and what we can accomplish comes from separating ourselves from the collected garbage into a KNOWING.

Dan had a fascination for mystique when Socrates was introduced in the movie. The mind is inquisitive about things it doesn't understand. Thankfully, in his case, as in the lives of many others, the drawing unto us what we need, when we need it, does not go unfulfilled - even in the midst of the seeming ignorance surrounding us. The time has come when more and more people are realizing their higher capacity of intelligence, wisdom, and purpose.

As a child, I was in an auto accident. Like Dan, I had crushed bones. And, like Dan, I recovered miraculously to perfection in a short time despite warnings and dire predictions from the medical profession. Nothing is impossible (to God). My experience was over 50 years ago, and just last year my old school principle (now in his eighty's) told me he never forgot it. Like Dan's classmates, my friends also wanted to know about the 'magic'. But like Dan said, "It ISN'T magic". (And, as we all know, magic is an illusion, anyway!)

What time is it, Dan? It's NOW (as he realized). That's the only time we have. Use it to perfection.

If this movie does nothing more than make someone THINK about endless possibilities, it has done its good. If it makes someone ACT to achieve those endless possibilities, it has done even more good. Kudos!

5 out of 5 stars Peaceful Warrior is awesome.......2007-09-01

I have read the two books in this series an I think this movie did a pretty good job of putting the core messages from the book accross. Although it didn't follow the book's details or the fact that Socrates exit wasn't near the same, it was still a good movie with a great set of learning tools for life. if you have seen the movie and not read the book I would recommend reading the book. I definitely recommend the movie too.

5 out of 5 stars TIME WELL SPENT.......2007-08-23

This movie is magical - inspired by a book that reflected the spirit of the 70s: the search for meaning. Although the message of Peaceful Warrior is the movie's strong point, it is matched by the superb acting, direction, and cinematography. This is the kind of movie that, depending on your personal evolution, may have a profound impact on how you approach the rest of your life.

Oh my goodness this is a MUST SEE MOVIE! It was a great thriller, story line, keep you on edge of your seat. It was very well done, had great plot. You will be glued to the screen!

1 out of 5 stars Crap...............what more can I say................2007-09-08

This movie was crap, crap and more crap. Oh, and did I mention it was crap. I would give this movie zero stars if I could.
From Halle Berry's over-acting, numerous close-ups, to Bruce Willis' stoic face. This movie should never have left the editing room except in the trash can.
Berry's performance in Catwoman was worth an Oscar compared to her portrayal in this forgetable farce.
It's like the writers got together and said who is the person you least expect to have committed the murder? Well, of course, the person you have investigating it.......lets make them the killer.
Just plain dumb.

3 out of 5 stars Not perfect by far, but better than you've heard.......2007-09-08

I'd heard this movie was a waste
Badly done and in poor taste
I bought it with indecent haste
(Along with staples, mints and paste)

It started oh, so very well
With people playing kiss and tell
But then something began to smell
Before the final curtain fell

Seems everybody has inside
Something that they'd rather hide
And if this movie is a guide
Be careful in whom you confide

While chatting on the internet
There's something you should not forget
Strangers are a constant threat
So don't do things you might regret

Halle Berry sifts the lies
That lead to an old friend's demise
There are some things you can't disguise
If you look deep into her eyes

I found that it was rather gripping
Though by the end the plot was slipping
I'm glad I didn't opt for skipping
But happy that I paid no shipping

1 out of 5 stars Wha-Huh?.......2007-09-07

Well, holy crap. This film was perfectly decent and kept its suspense and intrigue going...right up until the last ten minutes, where an ending from a completely different movie seems to be tacked on as a "twist ending" meant to surprise. It does succeed in surprising, but that's only because it makes absolutely no sense. The ending single-handedly destroys anything this film had going for it, which wasn't a whole lot to begin with, regardless of the performances. This is honestly a decent, well-acted movie to watch...only if you stop the film at the hour and a half mark and then make up your own ending yourself. Trust me, it'll be ten times better than what transpires here.

Kid safety is an important, yet often difficult topic of discussion between parents and children. The Safe Side's "Safe Side Super-Chick" is a decidedly zany host who successfully combines slapstick humor with serious, practical safety tips for kids. "Safe Side Super-Chick" breaks the population down into three quickly discernable categories: "Safe Side Adults" that kids know well and can always trust to keep them safe, "Don't Knows" like the mail carrier or the lady at the park and "Sorta Knows" like a coach or a schoolmate's parent. As "Safe Side Super-Chick" interacts with "Don't Knows" and "Sorta Knows", she offers seven specific safety tips to keep kids safe and, with the help of real kids, details simple, concrete actions and phrases that empower kids in a variety of potentially dangerous situations. Best of all, the presentation is never scary, but always extremely funny--that means that kids ages 2 to 10 will actually enjoy learning about safety. Kudos to Julie Clark (creator of Baby Einstein) and John Walsh (host of America's Most Wanted) for creating a safety video that's highly entertaining, informative, and practical. --Tami Horiuchi

Description

A message from John Walsh: I'm the host of a television show that I wish wasn't needed. But it is. Thankfully, 38 missing children have been recovered by our work at "America's Most Wanted." In 1981, the lives of my wife Reve and I were changed forever. Our beautiful son Adam was abducted from a mall in a nice area of South Florida. Sadly, two weeks into the biggest search for a child ever in Florida, our son was found murdered. In my quest to find justice and fight back for victims, I lobbied Congress to change the laws and to change how police search for missing children. I'm proud to say that the movement I started is still going strong. There's a national organization dedicated to helping children (National Center for Missing and Exploited Children) and now this country and its media are beginning to understand that our children need to be informed about how to stay safe. In 1981 not much was known about child abduction and exploitation. Parents knew very little and, tragically, children knew even less. Today we're proud of the awareness that children have about the dangers that face them. Children see images everywhere of kidnappings and exploitation. We only need to think about what we've seen in the past year--pedophiles in the clergy, Internet predators, and others who are in positions to take advantage of children's trust in them--to know that kids are still being victimized at an alarming rate. I hope that's about to change. As a crime fighter and host of a popular TV program that has saved lives, I'm proud to be teaming up with a woman who knows how to teach children. Kids want to know what to do, and parents need to be prepared. Like me, Julie Clark is a parent who cares. She has a proven track record of teaching kids. Her passion and experience make this series of safety videos for children something that parents and kids will want to watch. Now parents and kids will do what I've been doing for more than 23 years--they'll fight back.

5 out of 5 stars Safety Smart DVD for your kids.......2007-09-02

This is a great DVD to order for your kids. I did and it was especially helpful in explaining danger and strangers to my 4 year old. My 8 year old already knew a lot of this but it was a good reinforcement for her as well. It is well written and it doesnt come off as scary to children.

5 out of 5 stars great learning tool.......2007-08-31

This is a wonderful learning tool for young ones. Its focus is not on "strangers" which may be a scary word to them, but on "don't knows". My daughter of 4 responded so well to this video. It is well done and makes learning about safety fun.

4 out of 5 stars Fast paced.......2007-08-31

After watching the advert on TV my son wanted me to purchase this DVD and I thought it was a good idea too. The amazon price was a bit higher than what was on the manufacturer's website. But amazon was giving free shipping on this item which is why I bought it.
It is a very fast paced show, my son found it funny and it seemed nicely planned, at first. But as a parent, I think it would have been better if the producers paid more attention to getting the message across rather than being funny. I suppose the intention was not to make it scary for the kids or too serious, but sometimes, they could have toned down the funny parts a bit to emphasize to kids that it is NOT funny when it comes to dealing with strangers/people who can hurt them. Some important scenes, like when the strangers are trying to talk to the kids or take them away, were paused and interjected with little reminders and questions by the safe side chick, which breaks the child's attention and distracts them from the main scene. Several times, I had to draw my son's attention to what was happening BEFORE the safe side chick interrupted because things happen so quickly, he can't seem to keep pace.
This DVD might be too aggressive or upbeat for some kids, who don't like all the background noises, too much fast music and loud/too much fast talking. But it is well worth sitting with the child and watching it if you can, as it is a very helpful DVD and the kids are going to learn from it one way or the other. The concept is excellent for this DVD and I do hope they have a newer version in time to come. I have no regrets with this purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Even older children need reminders.......2007-08-30

This is a wonderful video to explain Stranger Safety to your children. My older daughter is 8 but is so outgoing and friendly that she has no unwariness towards any stranger at all - she is more than happy to talk to anyone about herself. I got this video to try and help explain stranger safety without scaring her. It is very a informational movie - but the approach is taken in a goofy-humorous kind of way - something that my daughter definately related to better than my constant questioning if she knew what a stranger was and to always watch her surroundings. I plan on showing it to her every once in awhile as a reminder (she is just way too friendly sometimes) and will be showing it to my younger daughter once I feel she is old enough to understand the message. I have also shared this video with friends who have children ages 4-7.

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT message for your kids !!! .......2007-08-28

We watched this video with our very outgoing 5 year old. Although none of us want to snuff out his naturally friendly personality, we do want him to start recognizing that there are strangers out there and we should exercise some ground rules when our "safe adults" arent right there with us. He really liked the video and has asked to watch it several times . I would recommend watching it with your kids and pausing it here and there to bring up scenarios they would relate to to really send the message!
it is GREAT . Share it with your friends! its IMPORTANT!!!

Much was written about Will Ferrell's first "dramatic role" as Harold Crick, an IRS auditor who begins hearing a voice narrating his life. But Stranger Than Fiction is hardly a drama. However, what Ferrell does--like Jim Carrey before him in The Truman Show--is handle a toned-down character with genuineness and affection: you believe he is this guy. Crick leads a lonely life filled with numbers and routines. While at first he considers the voice a nuisance, Crick decides more action is needed when it speaks of "his demise." Enter Professor Jules Hilbert (Dustin Hoffman), who takes on the absurd notion with revelry, trying to find out what kind of book Crick's life is leading. It turns out that the voice Crick is hearing belongs to Kay Eiffel (Emma Thompson), a very real--and troubled--author who is writing a book in which Crick is a fictional character. As usual with these things, the stuffed shirt learns to live a better life--Crick even falls for one of his audits, a brash baker named Ana (Maggie Gyllenhaal). Marc Foster (Monster's Ball, Finding Neverland) has the right tone for the film, using great urban scenes (the unnamed city is Chicago) with interesting visualizations of Crick's world of numbers. He also directs Ferrell, Hoffman, and Gyllenhaal to their most charming performances (plus Linda Hunt and Tom Hulce pop up in two funny scenes). Ferrell succeeds in being a romantic lead you can root for; a scene where he eats Ana's freshly baked cookies is totally delightful without a hint of sarcasm. Screenwriter Zach Helm has two personal traits with his story: like Crick he followed his heart (he stopped rewriting scripts and only worked on his own) and like Eiffel, the final results are not a masterpiece, but good, and entertaining enough. Britt Daniel of the band Spoon worked on the dynamite soundtrack.--Doug Thomas

4 out of 5 stars Great Low-Key Performance By Ferrell.......2007-09-17

Most times, I find it interesting to watch a comedian pay a dramatic role. Here, will Ferrell plays an extremely straight, low-key character: an IRS agent who is part of a verystrange story. Yes, the title to this movie is 100 percent accurate: "Stranger Than Fiction really describes this bizarre tale.

Since there are over 200 reviews of this, it would useless going into a description of the story. Suffice to say Ferrell, Emma Thompson, Maggie Gyllenhall and Dustin Hoffman are all good in this human-interest story which could have many interpretations.

If you are looking for something different, and something to get your brain working a little bit, this is recommended. For those expecting the normal Will Ferrell wackiness, stay away: it's hardly that. I hate to use the cliché phrase "thought-provoking," but I think it applies here.

5 out of 5 stars interestingly different.......2007-09-13

Stranger than Fiction was really good. I ended up having to buy it for 14.99$ because you can't rent it on here but ah well it was good so I don't care even though I am jobless I enjoyed my purchase. I have wanted to see this for awhile because Will Farrell is in it and I had the idea it was a comedy from the reviews and it was at times but just really really good and the ending is good too:):):):) I liked the premise of it, one I've never heard and it took me until Emma was in that interview in the Professors office to really be sure that she was a real person....I was confused, very confused about her "reality" Was she a real person???? I had no clue.....very good....I don't want to give it away.....anything because I'm not sure how people approach reviews....read them before or after so I will leave that be....but buy it......its worth it......

4 out of 5 stars Will Ferrell breaks from "Old School" and "Ricky Bobby" in solid performance.......2007-09-10

Many beloved "Saturday Night Live" comic actors have tried to break out from pure comedy into more dramatic roles. Dan Aykroyd ("Driving Miss Daisy"), Bill Murray ("Lost in Translation," "Rushmore"), and even John Belushi ("Continental Divide") have proven that it can be done. But it is undeniably a risk.

Therefore it is with kudos that we greet Will Ferrell's performance as Harold Crick, seriously unfunny IRS auditor, in Marc Forster's "Stranger than Fiction." Harold is obsessed with numbers, brushing each tooth an equal number of times every day, counting the number of steps it takes to make it to the same bus, etc. Harold takes no vacation, and has no real friends. His life is maddeningly static, and empty. When Harold dies, his tombstone will have nothing more than his name and the only two significant dates of his life - birth and death.

And then one day, Harold starts hearing a voice in his head, narrating his life. This is worrisome, but becomes downright frightening when the voice refers to Harold's impending demise. The voice is of author Karen Eiffel (Emmma Thompson), a nerve-wracked, chain-smoking recluse, a gifted writer suffering through writer's block as she tries to figure out how to kill Harold. The metaphysics of Karen writing a novel about a man who actually exists are never explained, but the set-up works regardless.

Harold, faced with impending doom, first seeks help from a shrink. The shrink, stumped by Harold's delusions but grasping on to Harold's description of the voice "narrating" his story, tells him to seek out an expert in literary theory. Enter Dustin Hoffman as Professor Jules Hibbert, who dismisses Harold until Harold says that the narrating voice uses the phrase, "little did he know." Jules is fascinated - "I've taught whole seminars on 'little did he know.'"

The story then turns to how Harold deals with his impending demise and learns to live his life again. Enter Ana Pascal (Maggie Gyllenhaal), a heavily-tattooed baker who is the subject of one of Harold's audits. Harold is charmed by her, but has not the first clue how to go about pursuing this beauty. The scenes with Ferrell and Gyllenhaal are not realistic (a tax-protesting free-spirit baker would never fall for this auditor, especially when his opening line is "I want you"), but the two actors handle their scenes with such care and tenderness that disbelief is suspended. Their most charming scene involves Ana introducing Harold to his first home-baked cookies, and Ferrell is quite surprising.

"Stranger than Fiction" could have been played as broad slapstick, and indeed that is what I had expected. But there is nothing along the lines of the "Baby Jesus" speech in "Talladega Nights" for madcap comedy here. What comedy there is in this movie is quiet, calm, and heart-felt. Strong performances fill out what could have been a mere trifle of a film, and Thompson and Ferrell particularly shine.

"Stranger than Fiction" is far from a laugh-out-loud comedy, but it has its comic moments. It is an unconventional story about conventional people, and if its ultimate conclusions about living life to the fullest are pure vanilla, that doesn't mean that it isn't a delicious vanilla. Just like a well-baked cookie.

5 out of 5 stars Will Ferrell really suprised me, he has a lot more range than.......2007-09-10

I would have given him credit. Very well done, with quiet hilarity and lots of irony. Dustin looks good, so does Queen. Dosen't really deserve 5 stars but I was so taken aback at how good it was compared to all the dreck that's out in theaters, I thought it was fair. Enjoy!

3 out of 5 stars Uhm..........2007-09-09

I was planning this to be a funny movie, because the main actor is only in comedy movies. I would suggest this to be rented but it wasn't good enough for me to buy and watch over and over again... There was a good plot, but I expected better.

Rootless Hungarian émigré Willie (John Lurie), his pal Eddie (Richard Edson), and visiting sixteen-year-old cousin Eva (Eszter Balint) always manage to make the least of any situation, whether aimlessly traversing the drab interiors and environs of New York City, Cleveland, or an anonymous Florida suburb. With its delicate humor and dramatic nonchalance, Jim Jarmusch's one-of-a-kind minimalist masterpiece, Stranger Than Paradise, forever transformed the landscape of American independent cinema. Also included in this special-edition release is Jarmusch's legendary debut feature, Permanent Vacation, a time capsule of late-seventies Manhattan, on DVD for the first time in the United States

5 out of 5 stars The Honeymooners by way of Ozu.......2007-09-07

Stranger Than Paradise not only announced the arrival of an original filmmaker with Jim Jarmusch, but also signaled the arrival of a new wave of American independent cinema along with the Coen brothers' Blood Simple and Spike Lee's She's Gotta Have It. Jarmusch's film came as a response to the impersonal commercial filmmaking of the Hollywood studios. His film was originally nothing more than a 30-minute short film shot from 40 minutes of extraneous film stock donated by German filmmaker Wim Wenders. Eventually, Jarmusch came into a small sum of money -- $120,000 worth -- and was able to complete the film.

Described by Jarmusch as The Honeymooners by way of Ozu, Stranger introduced his trademark style: minimal sets and long, uninterrupted takes with very little camera movement that are punctuated by the occasional fade to black. It is a funky mix of deadpanned American humour and a European visual sensibility. Stranger was made during the dawn of MTV and its success seems rather odd considering that it was the antithesis of most films being made in America at the time. The rather slow, meandering pace of Stranger did not conform to the quick cut, music video style that was fashionable at the time. His characters also lacked any sort of real ambition which was a world apart from most mainstream films. His approach seems downright revolutionary now as people's collective attention spans have gotten considerably shorter.

Stranger Than Paradise won the Camera d'or at the 1984 Cannes Film Festival and was soon heralded by many critics as a watershed film in American independent cinema. Much has been written about the film's outsider view of America and to be fair, the sparse visuals and down-on-their-luck hipsters that populate this film certainly flies in the face of the materialism of the 1980s, making it just as unique and significant today as it was back then.

Fans of this film can finally toss the crappy, bare bones MGM DVD as Criterion has given Jarmusch's film their deluxe treatment.

Perhaps the most substantial extra is the inclusion of Jarmusch's feature film debut, Permanent Vacation (1980). It's about the story of Ally Parker (Chris Parker), the prototypical Jarmusch protagonist - an alienated outsider. Jarmusch's stylistic approach is intact but with an even more non-sensical narrative that seems avant garde in nature.

"Kino '84: Jim Jarmusch" was produced for German television in 1984 and features interviews with some of the cast and crew from Permanent Vacation and Stranger Than Paradise. They all look so young and were just starting out. It's a nice snapshot of the times with the normally media-shy Sara Driver (Jarmusch's significant other) recounting filming anecdotes.

"Some Days in January 1984" is a 14-minute, Super 8 behind-the-scenes silent film shot by Tom Jarmusch. It looks like home movies as we see cast and crew freezing in Cleveland.

"Location Scouting" is a collection of black and white photographs taken while Jarmusch was checking out locations to use in the film. Sadly, they don't say where in Florida they were but these stills do look excellent.

Finally, there are U.S. and Japanese trailers for the film.

5 out of 5 stars What indy filmmaking is all about!.......2007-08-27

Jarmusch's first and perhaps finest film, a wonderful tale of misplaced identities on a road less traveled. Stranger than Paradise is shot like a travelogue as we follow John Lurie and friends from New York to Cleveland, Ohio, to somewhere in Florida. Lurie's character, Willie, is ostensibly helping out a wayward Hungarian cousin, Eva, but seems to be having a hard time coping with his emigree status as well. Richard Edson offers a wonderful comic foil in Eddie. The film is more held together by Lurie's musical score than it is the sparse dialog. Jarmusch prefers to capture the brooding nature of his characters as they struggle to relate to each other, resulting in a bitter exchange when they find themselves trapped in a non-descript Florida motel. At this point, the film takes a wonderful comic turn as Eva is mistaken for a contact and is given a briefcase full of cash, opening up new horizons. To reveal anymore is to spoil the fun. Stranger than Paradise is what indy filmmaking is all about!

1 out of 5 stars Is This the Best That Jesus Can Do?.......2007-09-14

I've noticed the large group of five star reviews for this film and, included among them are exuberant comments about the lack of doctrinal teaching in the film and how excited some were to find that this movie inspired them to see that truth is not about religion. Does that bother you? It should.

It is personally disheartening to me that so many people think this movie, and others like it, is so useful for evangelism when it leaves so many doubtful reviewers confirmed in their unbelief and even some Christians reviewers ashamed. Are you listening to them? Do they or what they say matter to you when they explain that they find this Jesus laughably (or sadly) simplistic? How many who say they loved this film have really had a serious conversation with an unbelieving lawyer? Did you find them to be the pushover this film suggests?

Do we really think we'll reach the lost or that they will trust us when we portray them in a way that insults their intelligence? Only a person who has very little experience witnessing to intelligent unbelievers could find this movie inspiring.

My husband called me in when it was on one of the channels on TV. We loved it and I had to buy it and I lend it to dear friends that share my love of Christ! It is the message and meat of this movie that is sure to move you. It is one of those movies that makes you want to be a better person and just love.

These 2 movies are definitely 2 must sees. I rate them Xlnt, for anyone. Buy them and let your friends see them, it surely could not hurt anything, but only do good.

Excellent!

If you don't wear them out first, why not donate both DVDs to your local church library? (The Perfect Stranger and Another Perfect Stranger.) What better way to share your blessings, than with this exceptional Mother/Daughter series.

The young adult version shares the typical and sometimes sudden rebellion to the acceptance of Mom and Dad's religion.

2 out of 5 stars RICK SHAQ GOLDSTEIN SAYS: "I WISH I STAYED A STRANGER TO THIS UNPERFECT STORY!".......2007-09-17

The advertisements for this flick, try to pull you in based on Halle Berry's looks and Bruce Willis's name recognition. Those are the last two semi-intelligent things the producers of this movie attempt. The acting is wooden and any attempt at any true human emotion is plastic and insincere at best. Halle's acting is phony and Willis seems to be sleep walking through his role simply for a paycheck. The ending is so contrived, that it is an affront to any viewer with a semblance of intelligence. When they give the myriad of "last-minute" scenario's, they are all from so far out in left field, that the producer could just as easily put you and me in a final scene and have it be more plausible.

1 out of 5 stars I don't know what to say ;-l.......2007-09-14

I have a theory that you can tell how bad a movie is going to be, based on the trailers that come before it. When I saw some bad trailers at the beginning of this dvd, I knew I was in for a bad movie and I was right. To be honest, it's hard for me to write this review because I don't get what the movie was about at all. Not only could I not follow it, I wasn't actually interested in following it even if I could. I normally love Bruce Willis and Halle Berry and when I knew that Gary Dourdan was in it too, I really wanted to watch this, but none of these actors could change the fact that this is a weak plotted movie that doesn't thrill or excite. In hindsight, I wish I hadn't bought this. I wouldn't even tell my friends to watch it on free to air tv.
I'm sorry to say that I thought this movie sucks. Right from the start and even to the 'thrilling and twisting' end, I couldn't have disliked a movie more.

3 out of 5 stars Slow build, but what a turn in the ending.......2007-08-23

This movie follows halle berry, an undercover reporter for a large new york newspaper who gets squelched one to many times, and quits her job. Then out of nowhere, one of her old town friends from philidelphia shows up and gives her a big story. However, this story is deeper than you could ever know. The movie is not much of a thriller, almost a snorfest for the first 90 minutes, I almost quit watching, then it all winds up in a big mess, leaving you wondering where it all came from. The pieces are there, just that they went together like this, entertaining. View once, and do it with a group, so they don't spend too much renting this one.

2 out of 5 stars The surprise ending can't save a bad movie.......2007-08-15

Halle Berry and Bruce Willis can't save this boring thriller in which a investigative reporter(Halle) tries to catch the supposed killer(Bruce) of her friend with the help of a computer spec(Giovanni Ribisi).
I won't get into details because I don't want to spoil the pleasure for those who will see the movie.
No thrill, no suspense,a weak plot, too many computer details, worth seeing only for Giovanni Ribisi(in case you're not a fan of Halle).
Better to leave it a "Perfect Stranger".

3 out of 5 stars Not the Best But Worth the Watch.......2007-08-29

In my opinion not the worst film I've seen this year but not the best from Halle Berry or Bruce Willis.
A few unexpected twists the acting can be a bit wooden at times but worth the watch.
The Blu Ray transfer is not too bad but there are better films to show case the hi def experience.

1 out of 5 stars Do you have any idea what the words awful filmmaking mean?!.......2007-08-20

Perfect Stranger is quite possibly the worst movie of 2007. It is so terrible that it makes Bratz look like an Oscar winner. One could barely classify the acting in this film as acting. Halle Berry proves once again that, outside of her Oscar performance, she is as talented as a paper towel. Bruce Willis also provides some laughable delivery of lines; mostly, he looks like he wants to rape someone or punch them in the face. What a joke. The twist ending is so unbelivably lame, too. Hell, this movie is such tripe I barely feel like devoting time to this review anymore. Just take my advice and don't bother. Although, it IS on Blu-ray and might look rather decent in 1080p. But I'm sure there are much better reference disks out there without bad hairpieces and lame acting.

5 out of 5 stars pretty good movie.......2007-08-18

If you like crazy twists and turns, then you will love this movie. I was in suspense almost the whole movie. Overall a pretty good movie, but it might not be the kind of movie you watch more than once or twice.

Amazon.com essential video

The legendary story that hovers over Orson Welles's The Stranger is that he wanted Agnes Moorehead to star as the dogged Nazi hunter who trails a war criminal to a sleepy New England town. The part went to E.G. Robinson, who is marvelous, but it points out how many compromises Welles made on the film in an attempt to show Hollywood he could make a film on time, on budget, and on their own terms. He accomplished all three, turning out a stylish if unambitious film noir thriller, his only Hollywood film to turn a profit on its original release. Welles stars as unreformed fascist Franz Kindler, hiding as a schoolteacher in a New England prep school for boys and newly married to the headmaster's lovely if naive daughter (Loretta Young). Welles the director is in fine form for the opening sequences, casting a moody tension as agents shadow a twitchy low-level Nazi official skulking through South American ports and building up to dramatic crescendo as Kindler murders this little man, the lovely woods becoming a maelstrom of swirling leaves that expose the body he furiously tries to bury. The rest of film is a well-designed but conventional cat-and-mouse game featuring an eye-rolling performance by Welles and a thrilling conclusion played out in the dark clock tower that looms over the little village. --Sean Axmaker

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Better than usually given credit for...........2007-09-05

While no means comparable to Welles' masterpieces "Citizen Kane" or "The Trial," "The Stranger" shines not because it offers anything spectacular as far as the cinema is concerned. Where it does succeed, despite itc conventional storyline is in characterization in the leads. Robinson is superb as the uncompromising Nazi-hunter bent on finding and bringing ex-Nazi Franz Kindler to justice for war crimes; Loretta Young as Kindler's pretty but naive wife is a bit trite but because of the strong performances by Robinson and Welles can be overlooked.

Welles himself, is convincing as ever as the ex-Nazi masquerading as Mr. Rankin, the favorite teacher at boys' prep school giddy at the irony that he will be married to Supreme Court Justice Longstreet's (Young) daughter. Even Richard Long, before he would become familiar to television audiences as Jarod Barkley of "The Big Valley," delivers a notable performance as Noah Longstreet, brother to Young, who is the first to really suspect the man his sister married is not who he claims to be.

It all works here and manages to entertain throughout. I love how Welles uses the theme of time and linked Kindler and Robinson's character together through their passion for clocks and their methodical attention to detail---Robinson with his notepad trying to establish a timeline for Rankin/Kindler's murder of a fellow Nazi co-patriot in the shadowy woods not far from the town. Welles, uses light and shadow quite liberally here and to great effect establishing an unmistakable atmosphere of menace and evil. We, the audience, quickly identify with Young's and Robinson's character--we want Rankin/Kindler caught--especially after what he does to Red--Noah's dog for attempting to uncover Kindler's murder.

For those who admire Welles' work will enjoy this film; if you are an Eddie G fan--you will love it and recognize some of the gifts this actor has to offer. Other than a storyline that engages the viewer, Welles' conclusion, although somewhat melodramatic and expected, manages to keep the viewer's riveted to the screen throughout the duration of the film.

4 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-08-08

I have waited many years to get a DVD copy of this after many viewings from my worn out vhs copy. This is great teaming between Welles and Robinson. The subject is good too. Viewers may also like Hitchcock's Notorius.

5 out of 5 stars AT LAST.......2007-07-30

This is one of my favourite film noirs, a great movie in which Welles showed the world he could do a classic Hollywood movie without going over the budget an still produce a genuine and personal masterpiece. I own two more previously released transfers of this public domain film, none of which did justice to the movie. They look like worn out VHS tapes. They are that bad. Finally, though without any extras and at a relatively high price, MGM has released what seems to be a transfer from a very good original 35 mm print, if not the original negative. The picture looks very clean and sharp, with deep blacks, and at last I can enjoy the film as Welles intended. Buy it.

4 out of 5 stars Although without extras this is the version of "The Stranger" to get for Welles fans.......2007-07-15

**Please note: This review is for the MGM/Film Noir Series release of "The Stranger" NOT any of the public domain releases**

"The Stranger" proves that Orson Welles could deliver a film on time and within budget. "The Stranger" almost seems like an answer to Hitchcock's "Shadow of a Doubt" in that it tackles many of the same themes from a different perspective. While Hitchcock's film "The Stranger" creates a complex villian in Franz Kindler/Charles Rankin. The MGM version is the one to get since it goes back to the RKO Vault (RKO which is a bit of irony considering that Welles made "Citizen Kane" for the studio and had his film "The Magnificent Ambersons" butchered by the studio while he was in South America partying and working on "It's All True"). Welles' original version can 115 minutes while the final version was recut by producers Sam Spiegel (the producer of "Lawrence of Arabia" working under the name S. E. Eagel) and Bill Goetz (who helped finace the project). If any of the footage cut still exists it is probably lost which is a pity as according to comments/notes that Welles made over the years the film had a much longer prologue.

MGM delivers one of the better looking versions on DVD that I've seen. There are public domain DVD that are floating around but most of them I've seen have been from inferior 16mm or faded prints that don't do the moody cinematography justice. We do get alternate language tracks in French and Spanish for the film but no commentary track which is disappointing given that this is a Welles film. I'm sure that Simon Callow (who wrote the two excellent Welles biographies ORSON WELLES: THE ROAD TO XANADU and ORSON WELLES: HELLO AMERICANS) could have provided an excellent commentary based on his observations on the film in his second volume of his Welles' biographies. We don't even get a vintage trailer for the film. A featurette on the film's production (it was one of Welles' most profitable films which is important in and of itself), changes that Spiegel made to the film and Welles' own comments which have been videotaped/recorded over the years would have been valuable. Regardless, this is a fine film which finally looks excellent (with some minor flaws due to age and damage)that should have been treated better by MGM.

**SPOILER ALERT**

Welles plays Charles Rankin a man with a mysterious past . He's a history professor teaching and living in a small town marrying the daughter of a Supreme Court Justice Mary (Loretta Young). Just before the wedding Rankin's past comes calling with a visit by a man named Meinike (Konstantin Shayne). A former Nazi, Meinike has been released by a government agent named Wilson(Edward G. Robinson) in a game of cat and mouse. Wilson hopes that Meinike will lead him to an Franz Kindler a Nazi at large. He does just that but before Wilson can act Rankin murders Meinike to close off his past. Suddenly Rankin's carefully cultivated identity (and Mary's world)becomes unraveled as Wilson doggedly closes in on him.

**END OF SPOILER ALERT**

Welles had a troubled history for all of his films which often meant that the films were compromised. Nevertheless, "The Stranger" plays as a strong suspense thriller although the often shrill and over-the-top music score doesn't quite work for the film. This is another example where Bernard Herrmann would have added signficantly to the film if he had been hired to do the score. Film noir fans will enjoy this flawed Welles classic which has a number of dazzling set pieces particularly the stunning and unique conclusion at the clock tower.

While this edition which is part of MGM's "Film Noir" series lacks any special features(the film could have used a commentary track from any one of Welles' fine biographers particularly Simon Callow), the film looks pretty good overall. It hasn't been restored and has some minor print damage but overall looks quite nice. 4 stars for the presentation 0 stars for the extras. Perhaps MGM will reconsider their decision to release this without extras when Warner releases "The Magnificient Ambersons" on DVD late this year (2007) or early next (2008--depends upon how quickly they can assemble the material now that they've found a good source print).

Although a bare bones release, this is definitely the version to get for film fans. It's a pity though that MGM decided to treat the film with so little care given that it is a Welles film with a strong cast. Other Welles films worth getting:

Touch of Evil (Restored to Orson Welles' Vision)The Lady from Shanghai

Orson Welles' THE STRANGER(1946) has finally seen an official release from original vault elements. Is is perfect? No, there are a few negative blemishes here and there. Is it better than any public domain version on the market? YES! If you're a fan of this film, the MGM version is the one to have. She joined a cult, battled anorexia, beat sexual harassers at their own game, got fake-married, and so much more. Ever since the Comedy Central series Strangers with Candy first aired, Jerri Blank has seemed fated for humiliation, disease, and a boxed set--here, her ultimate destiny is finally fulfilled.

In creating Jerri, the 46-year-old high school freshman, Amy Sedaris and her co-stars/co-writers Paul Dinello and Stephen Colbert imagined a person who is both startlingly crass and strangely innocent. One minute Jerri is uttering the immortal line "I like the pole and the hole"--the next she's only interested in "pizza, pizza, pizza," and joining the cheerleading squad. Her world view is completely unaffected by her 32 years as a "junkie whore." It won't take a rabid SWC fan--just a lover of wicked satire--to appreciate this trapper-keeper-shaped package and the After School Special-based stories inside. Some of the bonus features, including an interview with the stars at the Museum of Television & Radio, will be familiar to folks who have previous, single-season DVDs. However, certain new additions, such as "The Trip Back" PSA, which stars a real-life Jerri clone, make this set a worth-owning item. Other highlights include deleted scenes--one of which features an inspirational meeting between Jerri and Buddha Stalin, Flatpoint's most controversial rock star. A clever film strip by closeted lovers Chuck Noblet and Geoffrey Jellineck on their "research trip" to Mexico also draws chuckles. Over 30 episodes, the jokes do become a touch repetitive, but the series never loses its energy or sharp wit. If you're looking for a show that will teach you how to do the wrong things the right way, the Strangers with Candy boxed set has the lesson plan for you. --Leah Weathersby

Product description

Set in suburban Flatpoint, USA, Strangers with Candy twisted the conventions of the After-School Special to create a completely original comedy series. Each half hour follows the misadventures of Jerri Blank, a 46 year old high school dropout who has spent the last 32 years in and out of prison - a self described "boozer, user and loser." Strangers with Candy commences as Jerri decides to pick up her life exactly where she left it: living at home and starting ninth grade. Faced with classic high school dilemmas every week, Jerri's old habits - as well as the misguided advice of her self-centered teachers - cause her to resolve each crisis by learning the wrong lesson from every scenario.

3 out of 5 stars Good and Bad.........2007-06-25

These seasons are much better than the movie imho.. Copy quality is fair to below average, noisy, a bit over compressed. Half the disks are defective causing freeze and digital noise. I tested on other dvd players to verify.

4 out of 5 stars A laugh riot.......2007-06-13

Amy Sedaris should be a household name. Maybe she is in some circles. She is one funny woman. This show is bizarre and tacky. Politically incorrect to the extreme.

Somehow the main character, Jerri Blank--played by Sedaris--is sympathetic, even though she is shallow with no conscience. The premise is that this aging loser returns to high school to do things right this time. The storylines and dialog parody high school angst. Although the mean kids treat Jerri as a loser, and nerd, and even a "slut," they never notice that she's 46 years old. Jerri talks about her desire to be popular when she's not slipping into prison lingo.

Its a shock to see how adorable Sedaris is, while the character Jerri is not only older but very spent looking.

At first the racist remarks and sexual references are funny because they are so blatant and out of place. I have to say that I found them annoying after awhile.

When I'd finally watched the last show of the series, I was sad. I wish the show were still on. I have watched the movie Strangers with Candy which is hilarious as well.

5 out of 5 stars I Like the Pole and the Hole.......2007-05-16

Perfect for any fan of the Strangers With Candy Tv series. When the movie came out, I was soo excited. I waited and waited for it to come to a movie theatre in town and low and behold, it did not. So when it came out on video I quickly ran to the video rental store and picked it up. But to my astonishment, it wasn't at all what I had come to expect from such a funny ensemble. The jokes were repeats of the show and weren't even put into the right context. I was upset at the outcome of this "come-back". So I decided to buy the complete series to fill the need I still greatly had for the show. And I must say, I was very satisfied with this decision. Some of the episodes I had not seen and I then understood some of the not so funny jokes of the movie that made perfect sense in the context of the show. Personally, my favorite episode of all time is the very last one, but it's like the last bite of a suculent hamburger, it can't be enjoyed completely unless the entire thing has been devoured first.
