Blessed by casual charm and sophisticated wit, Kissing Jessica Stein does for same-sex romance what Annie Hall did for straight neurotics. The influence of Woody Allen is keenly felt on this resourceful New York comedy (expanded from an off-Broadway play), especially when cowriter and costar Jennifer Westfeldt channels Diane Keaton's "la-di-da" nervousness as Jessica Stein, a romantically frustrated heterosexual copyeditor who impulsively answers a personal ad from a bisexual woman. Helen (cowriter Heather Juergensen) is as relaxed about lesbian love as Jessica is anxious, but they click as lovers, and so does the movie's delightful exploration of their budding relationship, which is further complicated by Jessica's yenta-like mother (Tovah Feldshuh) and a former boyfriend (Scott Cohen) who's now Jessica's boss. While acknowledging the serious repercussions of Jessica's bisexual flirtation, Kissing Jessica Stein takes its characters on a smart, compassionate journey of self-discovery that's as truthfully observant as it is gently entertaining. --Jeff Shannon

Description

Sex and the single girl gets a fresh new spin in this "very funny movie"! (Joel Siegel, Good morning America) Fed up with her fruitless search for "Mr. Right" and tired of blind dates from hell, attractive journalist Jessica Stein whimsically responds to a classified ad - from Helen! Making and breaking new rules of dating as they go, the two women muddle through an earnest but hilarious courtship that blurs the lines between friendship and romantic love in this "smashing romantic comedy" (Rolling Stone)

4 out of 5 stars A very delightful, and unortodox, romantic conedy.......2007-08-21

This is an absolutely terrific movie. I had never heard of this movie when I first bought it. I saw a recommendation for it, than read the description and decided to buy this movie. And I've loved it since.

Jessica answers a personal ad from Helen and their lives are turned upside down from that moment on. This is one of my favorite romantic comedies of all time. It's just a delight considering some of the more, high priced boring romantic comedies that come along on a yearly basis.

The DVD contains 2 commentaries, one from the stars and one from the crew. Plenty of deleted scenes, including the original ending, and a behind the scenes featurette and trailer.

One of the deleted scenes features a kiss between two unlikely people.

Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars The best romantic comedy of '02.......2007-05-26

"Kissing Jessica Stein" features no major (or even minor) stars, a low budget (about $1 million), and a taboo topic. But the film, which never would have been made without the perseverance of screenwriters and co-stars Heather Juergensen and Jennifer Westfeldt, is a refreshing mix of quirky indie spirit and classic romantic-comedy sentiment.

Westfeldt plays Jessica Stein, a neurotic New York copy editor who's fed up with the dating game. If having her overprotective Jewish mother set her up with undesirable suitors wasn't bad enough, she also has to deal with one bad date after another, not to mention working for her ex-boyfriend (a solid Scott Cohen).

The movie gets off to a somewhat rocky star, with the humor coming across as forced and the scenarios boasting a been-there-seen-that feel.

Fortunately, when Jessica decides to answer a personal ad in the "Women Seeking Women" section, the film takes off. The first date between Jessica and Helen Cooper (Heather Juergensen), a downtown hipster with bisexual preferences, is beautifully written and acted. Jessica's gradual transition from feeling awkward to being intrigued is completely believable.

From then on out, with the exception of a few minor lapses, "Kissing Jessica Stein" is a fresh and funny romantic comedy that explores the ups and downs of the blossoming relationship between Jessica and Helen. Juergensen and Westfeldt, aided by a solid supporting cast, deliver plenty of laughs. Case in point: a highly amusing scene in which Jessica and Helen prod two unknowing, would-be male suitors into telling them why two women together are so sexy.

But "Kissing Jessica Stein" isn't all light laughs. With the help of director Charles Herman-Wurmfeld, Juergensen and Westfeldt dig into some highly effective dramatic scenes that round out the characters and give the film a little more depth. A nicely shot scene in which the two quarrel about Jessica's unwillingness to tell her family and friends about their lesbian relationship packs a powerful emotional wallop. Ditto a heartfelt exchange between Jessica and her mom late in the film.

While director Herman-Wurmfeld does a fine job of making this low-budget pic look like its budget is much larger, he wisely leaves the focus on the actors and the film's excellent script. Westfeldt, who brings to mind an indie Lisa Kudrow, digs beyond sitcom superficiality to find the longing beneath Jessica's perfectionist leanings. The charismatic Juergensen, tough yet vulnerable, is superb as Helen -- keep your eye on this promising actress.

It's a kick to see two talented young women sticking it to the male-dominated movie scene and creating a top-notch film through their perseverance and talent. Anyone who enjoys a good romantic comedy and understands how rarely they come along won't want to miss "Kissing Jessica Stein."

5 out of 5 stars Great movie!.......2007-05-18

It's about a very conservative/neurotic woman who's fed up with men, and on a whim decides to try dating a woman instead. An all around good movie. It made me laugh, almost made me cry... I think they could've done a little more with the ending, but I thought it was still pretty good. It's even a good movie to have your boyfriend/husband watch with you(not super-girly). I would recommend this movie to just about anyone.

5 out of 5 stars love it.......2007-03-22

i think i am being a bit bias, but i love this movie. the seller sent it out relatively quickly as well.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Love Story.......2007-01-14

A lesbian love story, Kissing Jessica Stein is cute and sweet. Jessica is fed up of crappy dates with crappy men, so she takes a chance on a personal ad and begins dating Helen. Jessica finds everything she ever wanted in Helen, but keeps the relationship a secret because Jessica's not a lesbian. The relationship eventually deteriorates, but the experience gives Jessica a new outlook on life.

Peter Gabriel: Growing Up Live presents the complete 2003 Milan concert from Peter Gabriel's tour based around the album Up, featuring 17 tracks across 134 minutes. Literally central to a memorable show is a revolving stage that sees Gabriel going for a cycle ride in an exuberant "Solsbury Hill," performing "Growing Up" inside a Zorb ball, and delivering a gravity-defying sky walk in "Downside Up" with daughter Melanie. Accompanied by regular sidemen David Rhodes (guitar) and Tony Levin (bass), Gabriel is joined by the legendary Blind Boys of Alabama for the spine-tingling "Sky Blue," throughout mixing recent tracks like the abrasive "Darkness" and "The Barry Williams Show" with established crowd pleasers such as "Red Rain," "In Your Eyes," and "Sledgehammer."

Gabriel may be less wired than before, but he commands the arena with effortless charm and charismatic presence, his voice retaining all its paradoxically fragile power. Presented in an understated blue light and shot in an unobtrusive, gimmick-free style, the concert begins and ends in virtual darkness with Gabriel alone at a keyboard; from the opening "Here Comes the Flood" to the final "Father, Son," Growing Up is rock theater of rare intimacy, emotion, and intelligence.

The DVD is presented with a flawless 16:9 anamorphically enhanced picture and three soundtracks: rich and clear stereo, excellent Dolby Digital 5.1 and even more precise and detailed DTS. The Story of Growing Up is polished nine-minute documentary in which Gabriel talks about his ideas for the tour and the presentation of some of the songs. Tony Levin's View (five minutes) sets the song "More Than This" to photos taken by the bass player. --Gary S. Dalkin

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2007-04-12

After watching Still Growing Up and Secret World I think this is the best of the three in terms of the song list, production and performance. It is simply a joy to hear and watch. I've never seen PG live in person, but this DVD is a good way to experience it, especially if it's on a good surround system & screen.

5 out of 5 stars I enjoyed it........2007-02-20

This disc is not a "reference" quality disc by any means... the images are some what soft and although the music tracks are clean, perhaps it leans a tad too sanitized during post-production... However if you can overlook the technical aspirations of the dvd, you have yourself a very immersive show with great artistry and interesting visuals. Peter Gabriel is quite a thoughtful and engaging artist and it is readily apparent in this concert. I sat through the disc with the wife and we enjoyed it very much. If you like Peter, it is a disc worth acquiring for the collection.

1 out of 5 stars waste of time.......2007-01-24

Obviously the other reviewers have never been to a concert before. I have always been a fan of Peter Gabriel and i like his music but here he is in my opinion a pale glimmer of his former self. There was no energy and everybody looked like they were just going through the motions. Maybe all who wrote a review were captivated by the strange looking bald bass player
but i really am mystified as to the high marks on this one. This one just did'nt have the energy i've become acustomed to in a concert but was more like a tv studio production.

1 out of 5 stars Incorrect Region Code.......2007-01-10

I'm disappointed as this DVD is of Region Code 1, whereas my player (as logical in Finland!) can play only Region Code 2 DVDs. Region Codes are not mentioned at your web-site and when making the order/purchase.

Your return policy is also unclear. I see it unfair that I should pay for a postal charge, or any other compensation, when you send a product that I can not use with my DVD player.

5 out of 5 stars Blind Fury.......2007-08-23

Rutger Hauer is great. It's a pretty simple story line but he
is so believeable in any role. And he's very amusing with just
a lift of an eyebrow. It's worth watching anything with him
in it.

4 out of 5 stars An American Zatoichi - the blind swordsman.......2006-11-20

This film takes the character from the original japanese television series "Zatoichi - the Blind Swordsman" starring Shintaro Katsu complete with a hidden cane sword. Rutger Hauer takes the role and puts the American twist in it. Shô Kosugi, a japanese actor who plays ninja in a lot of Japanese movie and television flicks, stars as an assassin who fights Hauer's character. They should make a sequel or a remake this time with a more serious plot...

5 out of 5 stars Great movie.......2006-09-14

A blind swordman, The fight scenes where great! This man has a sixth sence. The story was also great. A must see!

3 out of 5 stars A different kind of hero.......2006-07-16

If you liked the old "Kung Fu" TV series, you'll like this movie. Soft spoken and easy going Nick Parker (Rutger Hauer), like Kwai Chang Caine, roams the civilized world in search of ... peace and tranquility? And, like our Kung Fu hero of the Old West, he is ready to come out of his mild mannered shell to defend the weak and fight evil. How he acquired such fighting skills is even stranger than how Kwai Chang Caine became a Kung Fu Master. Especially considering he is blind.

So what sets this movie apart from other action movies? Rutger Hauer.

Rutger Hauer is a really good actor when he applies himself, which he does not always do in his films. But he is at his pinnacle here, making you believe that what you see is what you get. He will make you believe a blind man can develop a six sense (with a little help from a mysterious tribe somewhere.)

I took a half star off because of a lame attempt at humor. I like a laugh as much as the next guy and there was some decent humor interlaced in the story but, a blind man driving around in heavy traffic, going up one-way streets, is something I expect to see in a three stooge's movie. It was out of place here. Still, this is a good action movie. 3 1/2 stars.

Description

Zatoichi 1: The Tale of Zatoichi This is the movie that introduced the legend of Zatoichi and its star, Shintaro Katsu, ushering in a new era of the Japanese samurai film. Practicing his trade as a masseur in a small province, Zatoichi finds himself caught in a turf war between rival yakuza gangs. Aware of Zatoichi's reputation as an undefeatable swordsman, yakuza leader Sukejoro tries to hire him - unsuccessfully - as a mercenary. But it's too late. The other gang leader, Shigezo, hires a warrior with an equally fierce reputation to challenge Zatoichi. Thus the legend begins with intensely choreographed battle scenes and an expertly crafted story. Zatoichi 2: The Tale of Zatoichi Continues Nonstop action, a deadly love triangle, and a mysterious one-armed samurai round out the second installment in the legendary series. When Zatoichi discovers the lord who has hired him suffers from a madness that, if made public, would bring ruin to his empire and the livelihood of the samurai warriors he employs, the blind masseur becomes a wanted man for the secret he now possesses. Attacked at every turn by the crazed lord's samurais and hired yakuza thugs, Zatoichi manages to escape relatively unscathed. But in a final duel, masseur Ichi must face his old foe, the infamous one-armed samurai (played by Tomisaburo Wakayama, the brother of star Shintaro Katsu). Zatoichi 3: New Tale of Zatoichi With more killer swordsmanship, romance, and action packed drama, the blind masseur is back in the first color episode of the Zatoichi series. Ichi returns to his home village to discover that the teacher who trained him has been hiring out his skills with the sword to a ruthless gang of kidnappers. Meanwhile the mentor's sister offers herself in marriage to our hero, who must decline on account of his many enemies and the danger that would bring to any woman he was known to love. Zatoichi 4: The Fugitive Zatoichi meets a superior swordsman in episode four. Arriving in the village of Shimonita, Ichi learns that a local gang has placed a bounty on his head. A powerful hired ronin attacks Ichi and nearly claims his life. However, once a defenseless woman is slain by the assassin, Ichi can no longer control his rage. After laying waste to the entire gang, Ichi's final duel becomes a deadly meeting of the samurai's superior swordsmanship and the blind masseur's unbridled rage.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!!!.......2007-09-10

Every Saturday for the past few years I've arose on Saturday morning to watch a Samurai movie on International Film Channel. Since watching my first Zatoichi film I became a rabid fan of the series. My 4-volume set arrived this past Friday and I have already watched all four movies. Its a good thing I also ordered the 7-volume set.

The Blind Swordsmen movies are captivating in the way they are filmed. When it would have been easy to churn out a low budget action film, the producers of these movies took the high road and turned out films that are high quality in every way. Sure, there's the obligatory "blind swordsman wipes out two dozen samurai" stuff in it. But its all done in a believable way.

Zatoichi is a true antihero. Picture him as the Japanese version of the Lone Ranger, Marshall Dillon, Josie Wales, and John Wayne all rolled into one man. And Shintaro Katsu brings him to life in such a way that I cannot imagine anyone else playing Zatoichi. In fact, I was surprised to find out that Shintaro Katsu wasn't blind himself. He makes the part that believable.

Even if you've never seen a Zatoichi movie but you like samurai movies, I can promise you that you will not be disappointed in any of the Blind Swordsman movies.

5 out of 5 stars The Blind Swordsman.......2007-08-23

Great examples of this cult classic. I have all 26 DVD's and find these to be the best of the bunch.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!!.......2007-07-09

I was living in Japan in the the earil to mid sixties--what a wonderful memory!! I watched this on Japanese TV all thoes years ago and never thought I would see it again. But thanks to Janus films I can relive my childhood. Seeing these episodes again is like being reunited with a dear-long lost friend. I highly recommend this set to anyone..don't pass it up!

5 out of 5 stars A treasury of zen, honor, and samurai.......2007-04-22

I came to the Zatoichi franchise in college when AMC or TCM had a saturday morning Samurai movie special every week. They pulled heavily from the Zatoichi films and I was instantly sold on their humor, sometimes through wordplay, but alternately in the form of slapstick.

The sword fights also resonated with me as being very different from what I was used to. They were compact and final. Enemies fell after a single blow and a the hero rarely started fights; always attempted to talk his way out of them not from fear, but rather because killing was not something he relished.

This collection is a tremendous value with high quality examples of this storied franchise. The packaging looks great, very colorful with dynamic images on each case. It looks fabulous on a shelf and looks even better on a screen.

5 out of 5 stars A handfull of Zatoichi...wonderful!.......2007-04-11

I have been looking for this set to show up at Amazon. If you don't have the first four Ichi films, buy it. Watch all four in order and you will be in for a real treat. The set of twenty six Zatoichi films and the first six volumes of the TV series are a treasure to be viewed over and over for the rest of your life. Watch them in a quiet setting and breathe the atmosphere of life in feudal Japan. Love, hate, violence, peace, honor, pathos..it's all here..in spades. I have never seen anything like it in film. And so much of it. I have a dozen of the films and the first six volumes of the series and have been enthralled with every one. I'll continue until I have them all. Then I'll start all over from the beginning. If you get hooked, you will too.

Amazon.com essential video

With its title inspired by the notorious Black Dahlia murder case, The Blue Gardenia throws a twist into the story by making the mystery woman not the victim but the suspect in a lurid murder case. Anne Baxter, playing a virginal blonde with almost breathless innocence, impulsively accepts a blind date after receiving a "Dear Jane" letter from her boyfriend in Korea. Raymond Burr oozes slime as the lothario who plots his seduction with cynical calculation ("For drinks, Polynesian Pearl Divers, and don't spare the rum!") and the naive Baxter is easy prey, until she fights back against his advances with a fireplace poker and stumbles home. Waking up the next morning with the past evening a veritable blank, she discovers herself the prime suspect in a murder case trumpeted into a sensationalistic headline story by calculating columnist Richard Conte. Fritz Lang transforms the rather conventional low-budget thriller into a paranoid nightmare, his cheap sets and flat backdrops creating a tawdry world peopled by cynics and opportunists preying on the guileless, and Baxter makes every guilt-ridden moment palpable. Like in many film noir thrillers, the pat conclusion seems wholly arbitrary, the product of the Hollywood happy-ending machine. However, Lang's film isn't about the mystery, but the experience of an innocent whose single, desperate transgression turns her world upside down. --Sean Axmaker

Description

Fritz Lang's scathing critique of fifties America's hunger for bloodshed and scandal. Classic Hollywood film noir with a feminine twist, "The Blue Gardenia" stars Anne Baxter (All About Eve) as Norah Larkin, a working girl who wakes up a murderess after passing out in the apartment of brutish playboy Harry Prebble (Raymond Burr). Branded "The Blue Gardenia" by a sensational columnist (Richard Conte), Norah dodges dragnets, informants and the cruel hand of fate as she struggles to conceal her involvement with Prebble and to remember the details of her ill fated night. As her hopes for justice fade, she decides to gamble her future on the journalist who transformed her into such a notorious public figure. Enhancing the melancholy mood of the film is the haunting theme song arranged by Nelson Riddle and performed to perfection by Nat "King" Cole.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars ANNE BAXTER IS PERFECTION.......2007-07-15

Of all the films Anne Baxter made during the 1950's, besides The 10 Commandments, this is my favorite. So 50's looking from the cars to the clothes to the apartment Anne shared with Ann Sothern and Jeff Donnell.
Anne gives an intense, yet sympathetic performance. Richard Conte I found a bit annoying, and I couldn't believe, with all the street smarts his character had, he couldn't figure out that Anne was The Blue Gardenia. The Nat King Cole title song is wonderful and the assortment of character actors is equally wonderful, Ruth Storey, Frank Ferguson, Almira Sessions etc.
Ann Sothern nearly steels the film with her acid tongued one liner wise cracks. A great film noir any Anne Baxter fan should enjoy!

I thought this was a fairly good film. The surpise ending was a treat. i particularly enjoyed the performances of Anne Baxter and Anne Sothern

5 out of 5 stars A Bargain.......2006-07-01

This is a minor film noir but has a great performance from Raymond Burr (pre-Perry Mason) as a louse. The rest of the cast put on a good show and is well worth the reduced price from Amazon.

4 out of 5 stars Good Mystery , if Not Great Noir........2006-04-03

"The Blue Gardenia" opens with a plausible plotline: A nice, slightly naïve, working girl (Ann Baxter) goes on a date with a sleazebag (Raymond Burr). In early 50s Hollywood, that's how Burr was cast. This was before the "Perry Mason" series made him so respectable. The jerk gets Baxter drunk on exotic drinks and tries to put the moves on her. To ward him off, she hits RB on the head with a poker-and passes out. The next day, Burr is dead and guess who the main suspect is? Director Fritz Lang uses an old ploy: The audience suspects Baxter is innocent but Anne blacked out and doesn't know what she did! The L.A. cops are looking only for a female murderess known as "The Blue Gardenia", named for the night club Burr took her. An enterprising, oily reporter (Richard Conte) gets involved, looking only for a good headline and to sell papers. He claims to be helping Baxter/the Gardenia but winds up getting her arrested! And then? And then Conte discovers a "certain clue", proving the good girl cannot be the Gardenia! BG winds down to an inevitable 1950s "happy ending". That is the film's major weak point. A second is the rushed resolution. It appears that Warner Brothers was determined to achieve a strict 90 minute run time. Yet a few more minutes at the end might have added some needed spice and tension. Silver and Ward's "Film Noir" opined that BG was shot in 50s b& w Television style, not the standard "noir" format. Other amazon reviewers made the same observation, but this aspect is not fatal. Though it is not truly a noir release, BG is a perfectly decent murder mystery. It has an engaging and offbeat cast! Those who can live with the small amount of aforementioned baggage should still enjoy watching BG.

4 out of 5 stars Film noir with a touch of femininity and hits of MacCarthyism.......2006-02-26

I'm probably biased regarding this film as I love film noir and I love Fritz Lang. I have not yet been disappointed by any of his films! I do recommend this film to those of you who may have the same interests as me or for those who just want to see a well-made thriller of the 1950s.

Fritz Lang is probably best known for his "German Expressionist" films like Metropolis. It must not be forgotten, however, that he had a long and accomplished Hollywood career. The Blue Gardenia came at a time when Fritz Lang had already directed some great film noirs like Scarlet Street, Women in the Window and The Secret Beyond the Door and he was yet to make The Big Heat.

What makes The Blue Gardenia different from other film noirs, is perhaps the weight of the female characters. Although many film noirs have great female portrayals, like the phenomenal Norma Desmond in Billy Wilder's Sunset Boulevard, few make the women the lead characters and men only secondary characters. This is, however the case in The Blue Gardenia where we follow closely Norah's sufferings and her two housemates (also female). This adds a notion of feminism as we are horrified by Norah's destiny in the film and the accusations brought against her.

Of course, this film was made in 1953 at the end of the age of MacCarthyism. Fritz Lang himself suffered from suspicions of being communist friendly, but he was never charged or presented before HUAC. Instead he could not find work in Hollywood for a couple of years. In the film, we can catch the atmosphere or suspicion, untrustworthiness, hesitation and slander that was so clearly a part of the witch hunting in Hollywood and in the rest of the US. Can Norah really have committed murder? Who can she trust? Her friends? The journalist Casey Mayo? And is it alright to make accusations and create slanders publicly in a newspaper? These are just some of the questions one could ask once one has seen the film...

It may not be Fritz Lang's best film or the best Film Noir, but it's still worth seeing!

Bruce Willis's first starring vehicle was this 1987 comedy by Blake Edwards (Victor/Victoria), in which the actor plays a yuppie set up on a blind date with a beautiful blonde (Kim Basinger). Everything goes swimmingly until Willis does what he was warned not to do: give the lady alcohol, which causes her to get entirely out of control. The one-note joke basically turns the film into a succession of set pieces in which Willis has to keep up with Basinger, bail her out of trouble, or get out of the way of her hotheaded former boyfriend (John Larroquette). Willis is fine, Basinger is impressively unhinged, Larroquette is hilarious, and Phil Hartman has a nice role as the friend who set up Willis's evening from hell. The slapstick shtick is classic Edwards, but the film is not Edwards at his most inspired. Consider Blind Date the work of a good filmmaker in a holding pattern. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars HIGHLY underrated comedy! it is hillarious!.......2007-07-10

just b/c it's '80's and looks cheesy doesn't mean it sucks. this movie is so funny! kim basinger is awesome and hillarious as drunken Nadia! everytime i watch it i'm bowled over with laughter. i highly recommend watching this movie!

3 out of 5 stars WHOA!.......2007-06-25

The sight of Bruce Willis slipping on golf balls brings a tear to my eye every time. I love Blake Edwards, always have, always will. He has made some bombs (any Pink Panther movie after Peter Sellers died, for example), yet Blind Date, as far as it is from being as funny as Sellers' Pink Panther movies, The Party (also with Sellers), Breakfast at Tiffany's, and so on, is an entertaining movie and has many clever moments.
The plot, anyway, concerns workaholic Walter (Bruce Willis, pre-DIE HARD and very funny), who is bucking for a promotion and soon finds he needs a date for a dinner with his boss and a Japanese client they are representing. His brother-in-law (the always reliable late Phil Hartman)recommends Nadia (Kim Basinger), who is a sweet girl, until you get her drunk. Pish posh, says Walter, and down the hatch goes the champagne. Soon she is wrecking the dinner party, getting Walter fired, getting his car destroyed, and ultimately getting him arrested, mostly thanks to her psychotic ex-bpyfriend David (John Larroquette, basically reprising his STRIPES character and doing a fine job at it). From there Walter has to crash David and Nadia's wedding (long story), but not before some sneaking around David's parents' mansion (which Edwards can direct like no one else).
So slapstick? Check. Romance? Check. Bad '80s music? ...Sigh, check. Yeah, you'd think combining the two things he does best (pratfalls and romance) would make a masterpiece, but his fine eye for what's funny and Dale Launer's (also behind My Cousin Vinny, Ruthless People, and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, three admittedly better movies) witty script make a funny movie to watch on a boring night. Just watch out for that music. Poor Henry Mancini can't even write good '80s music.

1 out of 5 stars Moronic.......2006-07-21

The so-called humor in this embarrassingly awful and unfunny movie is so uncreative and moronic. It is apparently for a demographic of viewers with an extremely childish sense of humor. A three year old will laugh at anything. Every turn of the plot is stupid. This is in the running for the worst movie ever made. I don't trust the taste of anyone who actually was impressed by this horse manure. I hope that Bruce Willis would have the class to turn down a role like this if he was offered it now. I think he is a very good actor. It's a shame what kind of garbage he had to be in, to get his career going.

5 out of 5 stars Ever feel that you are in a Dave Barry skit?.......2006-05-29

If you are familiar with Dave Barry "DAVE BARRY'S COMPLETE GUIDE TO GUYS", you will recognize his formula of starting out with some innocuous statement about a neutral subject and it builds up slowly and logically to make you thing that something totally ridicules is plausible.

Walter Davis (Bruce Willis) is required to bring a date to a company function. A relative (Phil Hartman) know for finding weird blind dates seems to have located the perfect date Nadia Gates (Kim Basinger;) the only caveat is that she is unstable when liberated. Walter was warned.

Naturally the warning must be an exaggeration as we all get a little tipsy. Nope it was right on the money. Nadia who also gives warning goes from polite to helpful to very helpful. To top this off she is being doggedly followed by a psychotic cop ex-boyfriend (John Larroquette.) This is just for starters.

"Do you recognize me? I used to be a respectable citizen. I had a good job and a promising future. I made only one mistake - I went on a blind date. ...Anyone got $10,000 for bail?"

5 out of 5 stars A COMEDY WORTH SEEING!!!.......2006-04-20

It has been awhile since I have seen this movie. The first time was in the theatre when it came out with my family. Since then I had seen it at Blockbuster and picked it up for the heck of it. I forgot how funny this movie was. And the most overlooked performance has to be by the late Phil Hartman (Ted Davis). What a comic he was! He had joined SNL in 1986 so I'm guessing this was one of his first movies after joining the show. Bruce Willis (Walter Davis) & Kim Basinger (Nadia Gates) do an equally good job of acting like a couple who are smitten with each other (when they aren't drunk, that is.) Adding to the laughs is Stephanie Faracy (The Great Outdoors) as Susie Davis, Walter's sister-in-law, John Larroquette (of Night Court) as Nadia's ex-crazed boyfriend David Bedford, and William Daniels (Boy Meets World) as Judge Harold Bedford, David's father. This is a great movie for a Friday night. It was just as much fun pointing out the cameos from Billy Vera & Stanley Jordan. Hope you enjoy this as much as I did!

An interview with Traudl Junge, one of Adolf Hitler's private secretaries from 1942 through the collapse of the Nazi regime, in which she tells it all. 2003 National Theatrical Release.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Blind Spot.......2007-07-18

With so many excellent films concerning Nazi Germany and the Holocaust, few have transfixed me as much as "Blind Spot." This feature needs no graphic wartime footage to deliver its impact. Instead, the camera stays focused on Ms. Junge, who, in her early twenties as the war raged, was completely naive in her political outlook (or so she claims). This film is made more poignant in that Ms. Junge died shortly after production was completed, giving us the feeling that in these interviews, she is working to expiate a lifetime of guilt, one born of ignorance, or perhaps more accurately, a suppression of horrific reality. This makes a perfect double feature with the outstanding narrative film "Downfall", in which her character is featured prominently.

5 out of 5 stars excellent, but too short.......2007-07-03

An amazing piece of history, but it needs to be longer. Also, the dissolves are an annoying distraction, but it was difficult to complain when one realizes the pricelessness of it all.

5 out of 5 stars A unusual perspective that not often presented........2007-04-01

Extremely poignant.
A unusual perspective that is not often presented.
This is a powerful look into the inside private life of Adolph Hitler, not the man he presented to the public eye.
It is also the story of a woman who found her self unexpectedly in his employ and shelter from the reality of the rest of the world, her enlightenment to his atrocities and her survival and coming to terms with what weighed heavily on her, believing that while she was at the time unaware of his innate evil, she had contributed to his crimes too. VERY eye opening.
I have watched this at least 5 times and learn something new every-time.

3 out of 5 stars Making Evil Work - Otherwise Good People Become Obtuse.......2007-02-05

Traudl Junge appears pleasant, well-adjusted, and thoughtful in her old age. Dying on the day that the film won awards in Europe this movie is her final statement. But, the interviewers where horrible. They never asked the key questions, rather they just allowed her to remember events and talk for almost an hour about the final days in the Berlin Bunker.

As a historical record, it's invaluable. But, as an insight into the human workings of Nazism, there is unfortunately nothing new here. Nazism and fascism in general can only function on such a large scale as it did in Germany when otherwise thoughtful people like Ms. Junge choose to create a "blind spot" so that the truth won't get through.

Traudl Junge was Hitler's secretary from 42-45. It is hard to fathom that she knew nothing about anything, acknowledging only one moment when DER JUDEN were discussed with Hitler. Imagine the scene: Frau Von Schirach comes to the Berghof and tells Hitler to his face that what is being done to the Jews is horrible. She is of course dismissed. Traudl Junge's assertion that she was unaware of the horrors that her boss and her colleagues were perpetrating is difficult to accept, just as Albert Speer's similar assetions are difficult to believe (especially since armaments production and concentration camps that supported such production fell under his authority as armaments minister). It seems that more than being embarrassed for being such a thoughtless automaton and servant of the modern devil and the greatest force of evil in the world in the last one hundred years, Junge seems embarrassed that she had created such a hole of fakery and self-deception around herself.

I've not read her book, and am not certain that I will. But it is a failure on the part of the interviewers to not ask her more questions. I heard only one or two questions, the rest of the entire film was Traudl talking about her experiences. More of a reminiscence than an insightful examination of her past, this movie is an addition to the historical record.

The insights that Junge must have had as a human being working so closely with Hitler and his cronies and sycophants were mainly lost in the movie. One almost feels badly for Ms. Junge, but not quite.
Recommended with reservations.

5 out of 5 stars clearing her conscience.......2007-01-25

When Traudl Junge was twenty-two she was chosen, she recalls, "by complete coincidence and chance" from a typing competition to become Hitler's secretary from 1942-1945. Later in life, she became deeply disturbed about how she could have participated in the Nazi horror at such close quarters and remained so apolitical. In a brutal catharsis of self-analysis, she describes her "blind spot" as remaining so oblivious to the obvious. Clearly wanting to unburden herself and to speak publically for the first time, she gave ten hours of interviews at the age of 81, just months before she died. This film has almost no cinematic style or technique. Junge sits in her modest Munich apartment, a camera is put on her, and she delivers a ninety-minute, somewhat rambling soliloquy on what it was like to be Hitler's secretary. There is little ethical or war time insight; the fascinating part, in fact, is how banal she describes Hitler --his dog, his diet, his kindly paternalism, daily lunches and dinners with him, etc. More than half of her remarks cover Hitler's last few days in his Berlin bunker, where he eventually committed suicide and his body was burned. This fascinating film could have been so much better if a savvy interviewer had plied her with questions. In German with English subtitles.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Great Deal--Highly Recommended.......2007-02-27

As others have noted, the Zatoichi movie series is a classic--outstanding and immensely enjoyable. This collection is a good value. The DVD reproduction seems to be first-rate (each movie looks better than I remember seeing it decades ago), and the subtitles are very well done: Not only are the translations good, but they appear below the wide-screen picture rather than on top of the scene. Occasionally there's even a little note displayed above the picture defining a term, such as "palanquin" ('kago' in Japanese).

I have one small complaint. Each of the 7 movies is individually shrinkwrapped with 3 of those incredibly annoying antitheft stickers. I paid good money for the collection, so why am I treated like a potential thief and made to waste time every time I open one? That's just plain rude. I could have used Zatoichi's help getting the DVDs open for the first time, and had he decided to pay a call on the packagers, I wouldn't have tried to stop him.

Warning: This collection is a hook. Once you see all 7 movies, you'll want to see the other 19, and individually they'll set you back a good deal more. Oh, well!

5 out of 5 stars Zatoichi box set.......2007-02-09

I'm hooked on Zatoichi now! I'm going to have to look for the rest of the collection, these movies were that much fun :)

5 out of 5 stars A Zatoichi starter set.......2006-09-20

Zatoichi is an institution in Japanese film, almost like James Bond or Star Trek films, but with the difference that the same actor has played the main character since the series inception, and with an amazing consistency of quality from the original film in 1962 through the final installment, #26, in 1989. Shintaro Katsu played many roles in his life, but in the minds of hearts of everyone who loves samurai films he will always be Zatoichi.

This boxset contains seven DVDs, all from the tail end of the Zatoichi series when Katsu had taken over the production duties on the series. They are all quality films, with "The Festival of Fire" and "Zatoichi meets Yojimbo" being among the best of the entire run. Its a great price for seven DVDs as well, which would cost much more if bought individually.

For those starting out with Zatoichi, the films are diverse enough to give a good feel for the flavor of the series. Funny films and serious films, they all have the charm and appeal that only Shintaro Katsu could bring to the table in a samurai action film. And this is some seriously cool samurai action. Katsu was a great actor, and a great swordsman as well.

The films in this collection are:

Zatoichi #16 - the Outlaw - A complicated story with a vast cast of characters. Directed by Satsuo Yamamoto, who also made the 1968 ghost story "Botan Doro."

Zatoichi #20 - Meets Yojimbo - A highly anticipated showdown between Zatoichi and Toshiro Mifune playing his famous Yojimbo character. Directed by acclaimed samurai film master Kihachi Okamoto, best known for "Sworld of Doom" and "Kill!"

Zatoichi #21 - The Festival of Fire - Considered one of the best entries in the series, directed by the original Zatoichi director Kenji Misumi.

Zatoichi #22 - Meets the One-Armed Swordsman - Zatoichi meets his Chinese counterpart, Wang. Directed by Kimiyoshi Yasuda, who also made the original "100 Monsters: Great Yokai War"

Zatoichi #23 - At Large - A more humorous flick, Zatoichi delivers a baby! Directed by Kazuo Mori, who also made "The Return of Daimajin."

Zatoichi #24 - In Desperation - Directed by Shintarô Katsu, Zatoichi himself, this is a darker, more disturbing entry.

Zatoichi #25 - Conspiracy - Zatoichi meets his long-lost sister. A guest appearance by Takashi Shimura of "Seven Samurai." Also directed by Kimiyoshi Yasuda.

5 out of 5 stars Shintaro Katsu: 1000 Oscars would not suffice........2006-08-18

This guy's acting is beyond this world. The stories and landscapes are incredible. Maybe the film-making technique is a little rusty some times, but in the whole it is effective.

3 out of 5 stars If you must have all of the Zatoichi films.......2005-09-21

A well priced collection of the less wonderful story lines. Zatoichi is always the great blind swordsman but there is less atmosphere and character development in the films included in this collection.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not the best acting, BUT..........2007-02-12

...the scenes with Kate Capshaw and Elle Macpherson are SIZZLING!! Stockard Channing is always wonderful, and has obviously waited it out to "come of age" and into the roles of her career. Cameryn Manheim and and a few of the other actresses were really fun to see outside of the familiar roles we are used to. I'd recommend "Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Her" if you like this "vignette" format...it's a little better.

3 out of 5 stars VERY TALENTED GROUP OF WOMEN.......2005-12-03

SOME OF THE CHARACTERS WERE JUST NOT ALIVE BUT KATE KAPSHAW WAS CONVINCING AS THE BI-SEXUAL LOVER OF ELLE MACPHEARSON.IT WAS GOOD TO SEE KATE AGAIN I THINK SHE'S UNDERRATED IT'S JUST TOUGH WHEN YOU'RE MRS.STEVEN SPIELBERG TO BE ANYTHING BUT MRS.SPIELBERG.I HAVE TO AGREE THAT THE LOVE SCENE PROBABLY WAS WRITTEN BY STRAIGHT MEN AND NOT LESBIAN WOMEN JONIE MITCHELL'S SONG WAS GREAT FOR THE LOVE SCENE, BUT I MUST ADMIT IT WAS THE SONG PLAYING IN THE CLUB THEY DANCED TO THAT MADE THIS MOVIE WORTH SEEING IT WAS A VERY GOOD SONG ONE OF CHAKA KHANS BEST SONGS, I PURCHASED THAT CD THE SONG IS CALLED STRONGER THAN BEFORE IF ANYONE IS INTERESTED.I KNOW ELLE TOOK IT ON THE CHIN ALOT FOR HER ACTING SHE WAS CLUMSY AT TIMES WITH HER LINES AND I LITTLE TO LETHARGIC BUT SHE'LL PROBALY IMPROVE WITH WORK, AND BOO-HOO WHEN U LOOK LIKE THAT WHO REALLY CARES ANYWAY, I THINK SHE WILL IMPROVE OVER TIME MOST MODELS HAVE.SHE JUST SEEMED LIKE SHE WASN'T PLAYING A CHARACTER,EVEN THOUGH HER ISSUES AND HER FEELINGS WERE REALISTIC FOR HER SITUATION. IT SEEMED LIKE SHE WAS ELLE MACPHEARSON NOT BEING COMFORTABLE WITH KATE CAPSHAW.THE THREE SISTERS WAS OK THE THING ABOUT IT IS IF YOU'RE NOT A DISFUNCTIONAL FAMILY OR KNOW OF ANY THEN IT REALLY SEEMS OVER THE TOP, THE THIRD STORY I THINK WAS THE WEAKEST STORY, I MEAN MIA FARROW LOVE HER, LINDA HAMILTON VERY CAPABLE AND LYNN WHITFIELD OFTEN UNDERRATED GAVE THEIR ALL,BUT IT REALLY DIDN'T HAVE A STRONG EFFECT WITH THE AUDIENCE, AND THE LAST STORY WITH CAMRYN MANHEIM DID DRAG A BIT AND I EXPECTED A BETTER BANG FOR THE ENDING,BUT STOCKARD CHANNING AS ALWAYS IMPRESSED ME EVEN THOUGH U KNOW NOTHING ABOUT HER.IT WAS HARD CONNECTING WITH THE CHARACTERS THEY WERE A LITTLE UNDER WRITTEN WITH STRONGER WRITING YOU ROOT FOR THEM AND YOU CARE ABOUT THEM, WOMENS RELATIONSHIPS CAN BE VERY COMPLEX AND WOMEN HAVE GOOD STORIES TO TELL HOPEFULLY WE'LL SEE MORE MOVIES LIKE THIS IN THE FUTURE BECAUSE STORIES ABOUT WOMEN ARE NOT VALUED OR PRODUCED AND THEY SHOULD BE.KUDOS FOR THE EFFORT.

3 out of 5 stars A Girl Thing review.......2005-08-09

I like A GirlThing. It has four mini storys about love and life and family. Don't worry each story is about 50 minutes, so you get real complete storys. I always feel a movie is good as long as it has a good story line and gives it enough time to tell the story. It's worth wathing.

1 out of 5 stars A Girl thing.......2005-07-07

If you love well written stories, great plots and captivating acting then this movie IS NOT for you.

I don't know how the producer managed to swindle precious investor dollars to get this tripe made into a movie, however there it is!

It was SO BORING and so badly done that after the first 1 hour and 45 minutes I had to turn it off. I don't even want to know how it ended.

The cast line up was great! That's the only 'positive' comment I can make with regards to this movie.

DO NOT watch it. DO NOT hire it. DO NOT believe anybody who thinks it is good.

The two lesbians who made love even did that scene poorly; get this, it was done in the missionary position!

Avoid this movie!

1 out of 5 stars A Girl Thing gone terribly wrong.......2004-09-16

When a friend and I read the back of the DVD at Blockbuster, we were intrigued by the plot, not to mention the incredible cast. We checked it out with anticipation of a great flick. I wouldnt even consider what we were feeling as dissapointment; I would describe what we felt as pure regret! The acting on the part of Elle McPherson was awful! The character development in this movie was null and void. I dont understand how other reviewers can say that this was a fabulous movie depicting real life situations about women...I dont know about you but I dont have internal conflict with everyday lesbian experiences, my mother never tricked me in to thinking I was adopted so that I'd get along with my siblings. I dont know what happened in the other two 'chapters' because we turned this atrocity of a movie off after 2 hours of pure hell. If you want to make a movie about womens issues, make a movie about our rights, our health issues, being a mother, etc. This was just a poorly written script with a good cast who couldnt even save it from the depths of the hideousness that is called A Girl Thing!
