Dalton sustains believability as the frustrated king while accommodating the period costumes and props. Golino is captivating as the heroine, whose only mistake is to have loved her husband in a time and place where the affection had almost nothing to do with marriage. - Axel Corti directed this historical drama starring Timothy Dalton as King Vittorio Amadeo, a 17th-century Italian monarch who becomes obsessed with the wife of one of his courtiers (Valeria Golino).
