I found this very fasinating and it left me with the desire to learn more.

5 out of 5 stars Don't listen to the racists reviewing Spencer Wells' research!.......2007-06-13

After more than three years of watching and rewatching Spencer Wells' careful production, discussing it in graduate classes and with friends and relatives both qualified and unqualified, I was shocked to read racist reviews of Journey of Man in Amazon. We are all so closely related that any African child can grow up to be a typical American if brought here, and any American child can learn the skills needed to become a competent African citizen in the same amount of time. Spencer Wells has shown that we are all very much alike and separated from one another by less than 50,000 years, and of that fact we should be not only confident but proud. No racist can take that away from any of us.

1 out of 5 stars race and genetics.......2007-04-21

I found the presentation overly simplistic of the scientific principles and overly dismissive of the religious principles involved.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating, inspiring........2007-03-26

Spencer Wells is an engaging and charming host for this fascinating perusal of the history of our species that is written in our DNA. He touches on many topics of great significance during the course of the documentary, including the nature of race and the roles of myth and science in human cultures. In spite of this, the documentary is entertaining and never difficult. The companion book is worth buying for more insight into the scientific and historical context in which the search for human prehistory has occurred.

The cinematography is beautiful, there is real humanity in the interviews and Wells' easygoing, self-deprecating style belies the intellectual firepower he must be packing in order to have worked with such giants as Lewontin and Cavalli-Sforza.

5 out of 5 stars Journey of Man, Spencer Wells.......2007-01-10

I saw this on PBS and was so impressed with this documentary that I immediately ordered it. I've shared this with family members, and we've all examined our views about "self" and our place in the Family of Man. I especially appreciated that not only did he include genetic information, but geography and archeology and sociology in his study about the Journey of Man. A superior work. I think it should be shown in schools. Maybe it would allow children to see us all as one family and stop violence against each other.

Description

The feature-length widescreen Director's Cut of the Discovery Channel special - executive produced by James Cameron. In 1980, a bulldozer accidentally uncovered a first-century tomb in Jerusalem. Of the ten ossuaries (stone coffins) found inside, six bore inscriptions: Jesus son of Joseph, Maria, Mariamene (the name by which Mary Magdalene was known), Joseph, Matthew, and Judah son of Jesus. Dismissed by archaeologists as coincidence, the ossuaries were warehoused and forgotten. Twenty-five years later, filmmaker Simcha Jacobovici and his team took a fresh look at this astounding cluster of New Testament names. Granted unparalleled access, they went in search of the ossuaries…and the lost tomb. What they found may well be the most controversial archaeological discovery of all time.

Features 80 minutes of exclusive bonus materials including:
Interviews with executive producer James Cameron and director Simcha Jacobovici

5 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2007-09-10

Let me start this review with a recap of what we know from the DVD. We found the tomb of a person named Jesus who had a father named Joseph. We have a Maria, a Miriamne, a Jose and a Matthew. So, having stated that, have we found the tomb of the Historical Jesus? We feel we know what happened to the Biblical Jesus based on the Gospels. Based on this, is it possible to find a Jesus tomb? Granted, it does not say "Jesus, son of Joesph, from Nazereth" on the ossuary. As one of the experts comments in the show (paraphrased) "...If we find the bones of Jesus of Nazereth, does that destroy faith in Christianity? It does not destroy MY faith. I leave what happens to bodies after they die to God." That is also my take on this. If we can prove that this is the Historical Jesus' body, it does not ruin my faith. It just offers a little more faith that this person who has numerous texts actually set foot on earth and said all these wonderful things. As far as those who may say, "well if there is a body then he could not have resurrected", why not? We all go under the assumption he physically rose from the dead and went human body and all to heaven. He could have done that, why not? He's the Son of God after all. It could also have been a strictly spiritual resurrection. Again, he's the Son of God, if his spirit body went to heaven and He wanted to show himself to his disciples to prove he "resurrected", he could do that as well and even let the disciples touch him.
Of course it is also possible that Jesus lived and died, said and did most of these wonderful things the Gospels attribute to him, then when they committed story to paper, they embellished it to make him a God-like being.
In the end, I don't know whether this is the tomb of the Historical Jesus or not. And this is not totally set out to prove one way or the other. What Simcha is trying to do, from my opinion, is set the evidence in front of the viewer and let the viewer decide if we found the tomb of Jesus of Nazereth or if we just found the biggest coincidence in recorded history. Either way, it is a great show.

4 out of 5 stars interesting, informative, and convincing.......2007-08-25

I love well made documentaries, and this one definitely fits the bill. The information it conveyed was quite convincing that perhaps this tomb that was found was the tomb of Jesus and his family, but who really knows. However, the plot of the film was easy to get into, and the director's personality really pulled you along on this journey of discovery. I remain somewhat agnostic on the issue of if it's really Jesus' tomb, but this film provided some great material to think about.

5 out of 5 stars The last hope for Jesus?.......2007-07-21

The Lost Tomb of Jesus is a striking documental work. I am a christian, but I cannot deny the relevance of this archeological work and it's implications. Any man, specially the christian, should know that beliefs have to be permanently confronted with culture, science and reflexion. Only time will say how far go the consequencies of this discovery. For me, the strongest supporting evidence for the thesis of this film lies in the laws of probability. I am perplexed... The Lost tomb of Jesus invites you to a profound meditation about the basis and meaning of christinanity.

3 out of 5 stars Lacking Hard Evidence - Too Hollywood.......2007-07-18

Very good production value. Seemingly solid evidence, but highly debated conclusions. Also, several of the 'key evidences' provided by the experts in this documentary were recanted by the very experts who made them. Most significantly the mathematical probability for this being THE tomb of the biblical Jesus was watered down significantly following the airing of this production (see rebuttal to this in the comments section by one of the experts).

Also, having now watched several episodes of 'The Naked Archaeologist' which follow the archaeological exploits of Simcha Jacobovici (same individual who leads the expedition on the Talpoit tomb), I must say that I am not at all impressed by his 'fly by the seat of his pants' methods for diliniating archaeological data. He appears to have very little respect for the location of the digs and sites he visits -- a bit like a bull in a china shop.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-07-17

Well, from reading many of the comments about the DVD, I must say this DVD has sparked much debate and one that is a welcome relief to me to witness the human race opening up to express their spiritual beliefs over this DVD . I love seeing all the comments and what we believe is so and maybe well founded. Where is all this information coming from that we speak with a THIS IS THE WAY IT IS ATTITUDE? IS it coming from how we have been raised or what we have read in the past? Just sit back and enjoy this DVD. It is very well put together and I find very interesting and thought provoking. I will leave it up to GOD to place in my heart his truth and to keep me on my path to him constantly.

The work of geneticists who have labored for years to map human DNA is the subject of this offbeat yet highly informative documentary from the PBS series Nova. Host Robert Krulwich, a correspondent for ABC Nightline, visits with scientists who explain, in terms understandable to laymen, the enormous challenges faced and overcome by scientists working on the Human Genome Project. The value of the research effort is underscored with visits to families affected by inherited diseases that could someday be eradicated, and even legal matters such as research patents and potential privacy issues are also covered intelligently. The race between government researchers and private biotech firms is detailed, and at appropriate times host Krulwich is able to inject some good-natured humor into this excellent documentary. --Robert J. McNamara

Description

Does it amaze you that yeast is your very close relative? That you possess roughly the same number of genes as a mouse? That you are 99.9% genetically identical to every other human? ABC Nightline correspondent Robert Krulwich lends a lighthearted touch to genetic science in this provocative two-hour NOVA special that takes you inside the amazing, complex and contentious race to decode the human genome.

The Human Genome Project was born in 1990, when an international consortium of labs set out to sequence all 3 billion letters of our DNA, predicting they'd finish by 2005. Halfway through their schedule, controversial scientist and entrepreneur J. Craig Venter threw the genome world into turmoil, when he announced his for-profit company Celera could finish the job in just two years. Francis Collins, leader of the publicly-funded effort, and MIT's Eric Lander were among the scientists who answered Venter's challenge. The result made history and laid the foundation for a remarkable future.

Armed with this powerful information, medical pioneers are in the midst of astonishing breakthroughs that will change medicine as we know it. Will you get cancer, arthritis, or Alzheimer's? The answer lies in your genetic code—but the question is: Do you want to know? And will these new discoveries eventually lead to cures?

This is an exceptional documentary about the mapping of the human genome and its implications for humanity. Well structured and presented in laymens terms, helps to make Cracking the Code of Life an important addition to understanding Evolution.

5 out of 5 stars Great movie.......2007-02-07

I am a high school Biology teacher and every year I show this film to my students as an introduction to our study on Genetics and Heredity. This is a great film that illustrates how the Human Genome Project began and examines the potential ethical dilemmas as well as potential benefits the completion of this project may have for society. Rarely can I show a "science" film and have so many students afterwards agree that it really was fascinating. In fact given its 2 hour length we can't finish it in one sitting and they beg me each day "Can we finish that movie today?" This movie stimulates some fascinating conversations in my classroom, and as a teacher, who could ask for more?

2 out of 5 stars Very simple.......2007-01-05

Very simple. I expected a better contribution in the field of science per se; and i found that is oriented to ethics. Regards, Madya Ayala

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant dialogue and setting!.......2007-09-04

Having watched the movie several times, Sally Hemmins is a great eye opener for those who are not familiar with US history especially during the slavery era. The events and story line were pretty consistent. The other version of Sally Hemmins filmed by Nick Nolte wasn't impressive. But the casting, dialogue, costumes, scenery and most of all the depiction/irony of Southern Slavery of 'Sally Hemmins: Ana American Scandal' is/was brilliant. I'll give definitely give it 5 STARS.

3 out of 5 stars Aside from the dramatic interracial implications..........2007-08-20

of President Jefferson and his concubine/slave Sally Hemings, there remains a rather usual story of a widower who transfers his well-known affection for his young deceased wife to her equally beautiful sister. Sally Hemings and Martha Jefferson were half-sisters and it was said that they looked rather alike. Sally came to Monticello with the marriage of Martha to Thomas Jefferson.

It is easy to point up the hypocrisy of Thomas Jefferson, the author who wrote so eloquently of freedom in the Declaration of Independence while denying to others, but initially Jefferson did seek the end of slavery in the 13 colonies. During the days of the Continental Congress he urged the abolition of slavery as part and parcel of the newly created United States, but was persuaded to drop the cause when the southern states threatened to bolt and withdraw their much needed support in the inevitable clash with the the crown. Following the Revolution Jefferson no longer persued abolitionist ideology

As a person ages, they often become more conservative and careful in their beliefs. This was true of Jefferson. He also held a strong belief in NOT concentrating or centralizing the powers of the government but rather to give the greater authority to each State to govern itself in the newly formed confederation. Although Jefferson's ideas would give way to Madison and the Federalization of the states; many still cling to the idea of decentralized government; the south in particular used this dictum again and again during the civil rights era in order to maintain their segregationist laws.

What can never be known is the true nature of the relationship between Sally Hemings and Jefferson. Sally Hemings was Jefferson's property and with no personal freedom or rights. We know that Jefferson instructed Martha Jefferson Randolph, his daughter by Martha Jefferson, to free Sally & her children upon his death. Many speculate that this was based on his love and affection for this steadfast woman with whom he shared much of his life and by whom he had a number of children.

4 out of 5 stars A STORY THAT ROCKED THE NATION.......2007-07-01

As a genealogist, I collect period movies. This is one of the first movies I ordered. This story is only one of many stories that occurred during the slavery peiod in this country. Because it was Thomas Jefferson - that made it big history. There were several slave owners who not only bed their slaves, some fell in love with them. The acting is excellent and the movie is very relevant. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Just Unbelievably Awesome!!!!!!!!.......2007-03-20

I ordered this movie and it came within a just a week. I love it. I culd watch it over and over again becuz i've been searching everywhere 4 this movie dying 2 c it again; I remember the movie from when it came on CBS back in '99 or 'oo. Tina Andrews did her research well and I love the way Sally Hemings was protrayed in the film. She's beautiful (thanks to Carmen Ejogo) and intelligent as well as feirce and kind at the same time. She's quite confident of herself. I also liked the way Jefferson was portrayed. It's almost completely believable to me-it's nice 2 hav an imagination. The other acters like, Diahann C., Mario V.P., Mare W., Amelia H., and Klea S. are great as well. I wish it culd hav gone into detail about her mother's, Betty, life and her Sally's two youngest sons, Eston and Madison. If you're interested in good entertainment of or the scandal of the U.s. 3rd president, you shuld seriously consider viewing this movie. I really like it and I am sooo glad I own it.

5 out of 5 stars Sally Hemings: Excellent Story Told of Love, Betrayal and Oppression.......2007-03-08

This movie was excellent. It was much better than the version that came out in the early '90's. If you love period films than you will definitely love this historical piece. This is the perfect example of people caught between privilege and oppression. Excellent!!!

Eddie Murphy's remake of The Nutty Professor used the good professor's alter ego, Buddy Love, in much the same way that Jerry Lewis did in his brilliant original: a representation of the id out of control that plays like an admission of the actor's off-screen sins. In the sequel, Murphy expands on his Klump family from the first film and makes them major characters. Consequently, his dark side has plenty more places to express itself, particularly through the oversexed grandmother, Sherman's aggressively impotent father, and his just plain surly uncle, as well as Buddy Love (all played by Murphy).

The movie opens with professor Sherman Klump barely holding onto his sanity as his internal Buddy Love makes him say inappropriate things. He decides to extract his mutant Buddy Love gene (a sort of genetic version of electroshock therapy), but afterward is unable to maintain his original personality and intelligence. Sherman is the most bland character of the bunch, and the audience gets stuck with his boring romance with fellow professor Janet Jackson, his struggle to be nice, and generic intrigue surrounding a Fountain of Youth formula he developed. When it's not trying too hard to be nice--heck, one character is anally raped by a giant hamster--the movie works. The moral of the story is that Sherman needs to reconnect with their inner Buddy Love. That goes for Murphy, too. --Andy Spletzer

EDDIE IS SO HILARIOUS. HE IS THE ENTIRE FAMILY OF THE KLUMPS. SHERMAN FINDS TRUE LOVE WITH THE BADDEST CHIC. HIS ALTER EGO BUDDY LOVES SIMPLY TRIES TO SET HIM

5 out of 5 stars Talk about Alter Ego!.......2006-12-13

Eddie Murphy is back and strong! Not only does Eddie Murphy carry the multi-personality aspect well, he also adds a strange yet hilariously familiar warm-fuzzy to the film! Awe inspiring Richard Prior is another comedian that made the transition to film making rather smoothly. I've yet to view a Murphy film I didn't like and hope he makes many-many more.

5 out of 5 stars The last greatness of Eddie Murphy.......2006-08-13

I enjoyed both of the films and even though in a way it makes fun of fat people, It's a great movie. I actually liked this better than the first one for some reason. And wo doesn't like the part when grampa Klump farts and lights a curtain on fire (I think that was him anyway). After this film, Murphy's movie career was going downhill (and I mean way down there to a point that you don't slide, you just fall.) I'm sorry to say this but it is just true.

3 out of 5 stars A SHOWCASE FOR EDDIE MURPHY.......2005-12-31

THE NUTTY PROFESSOR II is basically a showcase for the considerable talents of Eddie Murphy. Murphy plays the entire Klump family and he's hilarious in the different characterizations, especially his doting mother and his rather vulgar grandmother. The makeup is astounding in hiding the real Murphy and he has a field day with all of them. As one reviewer noted, Sherman is the most boring of all the characters, and his romantic tryst with Janet Jackson (who is surprisingly good) tends to get in the way of the script's flow. While much of the humor is crude (e.g., the hamster's sexual assault on Dean Larry Miller), one can't help but laugh. There are sexual jokes, flatulence galore, and some hilarious sight gags. Certainly not a classic movie, but admittedly entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars We don't care: we love these movies. Nutty Professor 2: The Klumps........2005-12-15

In your face: Nutty Professor 2 The Klumps RULES!!!!!! and Eddie Murphy is the best actor out since Redd Foxx. of Sanford and Son. While the Farscape crew barely maintains civility in the best of times, nothing in the series prepares the viewer for the devious and ruthless response they show when the DNA mad scientist offers them a way home in exchange for a sample of their DNA... and one of Pilot's arms. They warm up by hacking off Pilot's appendage in a savage amputation and then turn on each other when it becomes apparent that Moya can only get to one of their worlds.

"They've Got a Secret" is a rather misleading title, for the secret belongs to the living ship Moya, and the crew spends the entire episode trying to find out what it is. D'Argo yanks the wrong nerve in Moya's network and shoots through the ship's bowels like a kid on a water slide. He awakens in a delusion that has him reliving his tragic past and building up to a murderous rage directed squarely at Crichton yet again. --Sean Axmaker

Description

"DNA Mad Scientist": When a mysterious DNA researcher, Namtar, holds high the promise of helping Zhaan, D'Argo, and Rygel return to their home worlds, they will let nothing stand in their way. Caught up in their excitement, they begin to turn against each other, with no price seeming too great for the opportunity to go home. But how selfish will their sacrifices be…?

"They've Got a Secret": Trying to clear the ship of all Peacekeeper devices, D'Argo inadvertently causes an extremely strange reaction within Moya, at the same time driving himself into an inexplicable delirium. As D'Argo relives the painful events that led to him becoming a prisoner of the Peacekeepers, Moya's life support systems begin to shut down. Pilot falls unconscious, cutting off all hope of communication with Moya. The DRDs transform from mechanical servants to deadly protectors, attacking the crew with chilling resolve. As they race against time to correct the problem, the crew is in for a shocking surprise….

4 out of 5 stars Problematic characterization mars otherwise excellent ep.......2004-12-05

One of the best things about "Farscape" that sets it apart from most SF programs is that there is genuine conflict among the main characters, who do not all necessarily share the same agenda. Even so, the viciousness and back-stabbing that they display in "DNA Mad Scientist" is way over the top. When the mad scientist of the title demands that the crew give him one of Pilot's arms in exchange for his help, they immediately comply, hacking the desired appendage off while Pilot screams and struggles. They then fall to plotting against each other. I understand the time constraints of a television program, but it simply doesn't ring true for our heroes to be at each other's throats within the first few minutes of the episode without suitable build-up. It's not that I don't think D'Argo (Anthony Simcoe), Zhaan (Virginia Hey), and Rygel incapable of such behavior, it that it was too abrupt. Especially when they are positively tender with each other in the next episode, the far superior "Secret." This pivotal episode sets in motion certain events that will have enormous consequences in episodes to come...

2 out of 5 stars It's No Secret, One of these episodes is really bad........2004-06-19

As you can tell from my title, one of these episodes does not impress me at all.

"DNA Mad Scientist" features one of the best Henson creations of the series with Namtar, who is the title character of this episode. Basically, he is a fully realized alien species complete with backward knees (like the rear legs of dogs or horses).

The storyline is pretty straightforward. Namtar is collecting DNA from a variety of species and offeres the Moya crew a complete map of the galaxy in exchange for one of Pilot's arms. D'Argo, Rygel, & Zhaan go behind Aeryn & John's back to collect the arm (with Pilot screaming in agony, this is one of the most shocking scenes in Farscape history). With the DNA collected from the arm, Namtar then infects Aeryn and she begins to transform.

Although you can probably guess how it will turn out, there is an interesting surprise that's revealed at the end of the show about the origins of Namtar. The special effects are once again top notch, especially the scene with the map of the planets floating in Namtar's office. Overall, this is a fine episode and one of the better ones from the pre-Chiana days.

"They've Got A Secret" is simply the most boring episode of Farscape ever produced. Unfortunately, this episode cannot be ignored because it began two of the most important running plots in the series. The first one deals with D'Argo as he was accidentally cast out of Moya during the teaser. He is recovered, but his mind is drifting and we get to know something important about his past. His "secret" does manage to produce a tender scene with Zhaan, but that's about it.

Moya also has a "secret" and while it's revelation is somewhat interesting, the time it takes to get there may have you fast forwarding the DVD to get to that point. Basically, we have a twenty minute show stretched into fifty minutes with one long, pointless scene after another with the crew guessing as to what is wrong with D'Argo & Moya. I swear to the Lord above that one scene alone with John & Aeryn conversing about "what is going on", time itself comes to a stop.

I know that many 'scapers will disagree with me about my review of this episode. And all I can say is that I call 'em like I see 'em. This could've easily been a thirty minute show with room to spare and we wouldn't have missed a thing.

4 out of 5 stars The bad side and the good side of the Farscape crew.......2003-02-01

Volume 5 of Season 1 of "Farscape" offers up an interesting counterpoint between two episodes that show the characters at their worst and at their best as crewmates. In "DNA Mad Scientist" D'Argo, Zhaan and Rygel barely blink before they cut off one of Pilot's arms in order to trade it for a crystal that will show them how to get home and avoid the Peacekeepers. At that point they turn on each other in the great tradition of "Treasure of the Sierra Madre." Meanwhile, the titular mad scientist turns Aeryn into an intergalactic guinea pig in one of those plotlines I hate where playing with DNA has characters evolving/devolving with the greatest of ease, leaving it to Crichton to restore sanity and order to our dysfunctional little family.

"They've Got a Secret" keeps us guessing as to who exactly they turns out to be in this episode, which has long-range implications for the series. In a previous episode we had been teased with the idea that D'Argo has not revealed the true reason that he was imprisoned by the Peacekeeper. Yes, we find out what his deep dark secret is in this episode--it proves to be very deep and very dark--and, no, you never would have seen this one coming. Certainly we see a different side of D'Argo in this episode, turning the blustering warrior into a much more sympathetic figure.

I am not surprised but Crichton, the only human character on "Farscape," turns out to be the least interesting one of the bunch. Part of the reason for this is that he is so busy saving the day in episode after episode that his character development consists of nothing more than making pop culture references and missing Earth. In this particular volume it is D'Argo who clearly grows the most as a character. Having lauded these DVDs for the tag-team commentary on the first three discs, I would add my voice to the chorus of those who are bitterly disappointed that the practice does not extend to the entire series. This DVD series started off setting the standards for being fan-friendly and now it is fairly pedestrian. Now we have the irony that just as the episodes were getting a lot better, we lose the commentary and insights from the cast and crew.

3 out of 5 stars Two Great Eps, but No Substance :(.......2002-03-07

As a latecomer to FARSCAPE, I was pleased to see that ADV was releasing the episode of the series on DVD, and the first season is working its way along on these 2 eps per disc DVDs. While the first three DVDs had some neat extras on them, the last two (including this one) don't. And that's sad, given the price on these DVDs.

One of the things that FARSCAPE excels at is the story driven by character, and these two episodes have it. The disc begins with with "DNA Mad Scientist," one of my favourite episodes from the first season. With the possibility of finding a way home based on the help of scientist Nam'Tar, Moya's crew are willing to sacrifice a little bit of DNA from their eyes in what is obviously a highly unpleasant procedure. But when the demands for the starchart information the crew wants means one of Pilot's arms...well, let's just say the ruthlessness of some of the crew surprises the viewer. Things take on a more dangerous slant, when Nam'Tar injects some of Pilot's DNA into Aeryn Sun, and only John Crichton can make things right as the rest of Moya's crew are preoccupied by their own agendas and greed. A terrific story, with lots of really good character development, a few shocking bits along the way, some cool special effects, and a set of extra footage that makes the episode come more sharply into focus.

The second episode is "They've Got A Secret", in which apparent malfunctions on Moya and diversion of the ship's nutrients and energy flow threaten both Pilot and Moya's crew...but leads to a surprising development which will play a major part in the rest of the first season story arc, and leads into a morass of ramifications for the second season to deal with. Strong in characterisation and the element of suspense, this episode's extra footage provides some illumination on a couple of the characters and adds immeasurably to the story being told here. One of the best episodes of its kind in television science fiction, with a truly unique surprise that is not all that telegraphed.

As noted, there are no extras on this DVD, other than the extra footage per episode and the Profile on Rygel (and some of the folks behind-the-scenes on this annoying little Hynerian). I still get ticked off at the fact that ADV insists on putting their commercial advertising for other ADV products at the *beginning* of the DVDs, rather than as a menu feature, and that the last couple of FARSCAPE DVDs have had no real special features on them. On the other hand, the quality of the DVD and its two episodes with the extra footage doesn't quite make up for the lack of any additional features. The Rygel feature is entertaining in its own right, but there's nothing on the DVD besides the two episodes that makes it worth the price. The only reason I've given this episode three stars is for the quality of the episodes themselves and the fact that the extra footage in each one adds something to the shows in question.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful episodes, wish this DVD had commentaries.......2001-08-13

"DNA Mad Scientist" is one of the best of the early Farscape episodes. "They've got a Secret" is also good, and gives information about one of the characters that is important for later episodes in the series. This is a wonderful scifi series, much better than Star Trek, which has gotten tired and boring in its latest incarnations. Farscape mixes humor, drama, romance, action, great stories and characters into a very satisfying whole, and takes on some of the great human themes and problems that go beyond genre, as the best scifi does. My only real complaint is that I loved the commentaries on the first three DVDs in this series, and I wish we could have them back on future DVDs--please! Or maybe an extra of outtakes and bloopers.

If Species 3 lacks the star power of its previous incarnations - mostly notably Natasha Henstridge, whose participation here is relegated to a cameo - the movie succeeds in delivering lean, mean B-movie thrills by paring down the franchise's premise to its most exploitable elements - copious nudity and gore. Henstridge's voracious alien/human hybrid Eve dies gruesomely in the film's opening moments, but not before giving birth to an infant, who is rescued by a college professor (Robert Knepper) and grows into the pulchritudinous form of Sunny Mabrey. Unfortunately, she proves to be her mother's daughter in every way by setting out to mate with--and kill--any male unlucky enough to cross her path. While a definite step down in terms of plot and performance quality, Species 3 has glimpses of atmosphere and suspense in addition to the blood and skin shows, and makes good use of H.R. Giger's unsettlingly sensuous creature design, which should please franchise fans, gore hounds, and omnivorous sci-fi viewers. --Paul Gaita

3 out of 5 stars it was OK, nothing all that special.......2007-08-13

Despite some of the =other= reviews i've read on this movie, i wasn't all that "thrilled" with this movie. Esp because of it being the "unrated" edition, for those of us seeking a cheap thrill, it was far more of a tease than anything particularly hot or erotic in terms of what it delivered, IMO. It could have been done SO MUCH BETTER than the final result. O well...you pays your money, you takes your chances.

4 out of 5 stars best one yet........2007-06-25

species 3 is the best in the series. sexy and exciting and with a great story. cant wait for number 4.

4 out of 5 stars Best of the series.......2006-09-08

This is the best of the trilogy. I believe this is a straight to video release but it is better than the usual of its ilk. The main reason being Ameilia Cooke's gas station scene.....

2 out of 5 stars Just not very interesting.......2006-05-20

So this time we've got a new alien, played by Sunny Mabrey. She's being raised by a college professor who spirited her away from the government just after the end of the last movie. But there are also half-breed aliens, and they want to mate with her because their genes are all screwed up and they're dying from a whole host of diseases. When one of them shows up at the college professor's office and dies, he calls in help from a brilliant grad student. Soon, the alien starts to have "feelings" for this student, and the half-breed aliens attack.

This just wasn't terribly interesting, even for a direct-to-video movie. The story didn't have much forward momentum to it and the conclusion was fairly unsatisfying. The inclusion of the half-breed aliens didn't really serve any purpose except to put a stumbling block in front of the professor and his little science project. As far as the characters, the hot babe alien didn't have any emotions, so that pretty much wrote her out of the story. The professor and his student were just not very well developed and din't have any sort of personality traits that separated them from any other generic movie character. The whole thing left me uninterested. The worst part was there didn't seem to be any point to the story - what was the professor trying to do with the alien? This was never made clear, so when it wasn't successful, well, who cares?

Considering all the attention given to this being "unrated", it really didn't have any more gore or nudity than an average R rated movie.

3 out of 5 stars Let's Try It Again.......2005-11-29

First there was Sil. Then we had her duplicate Eve. Now we have Eve's daughter Sara. Sara is closer to alien than her predecessors and is the charge of a university professor. He is trying to analyze her DNA and create and even more perfect creation. We also have a number of Hybrids (although Sil, Eve and Sara are also hybrids) who have agendas of their own.

As Sara matures her need to breed kicks in but she is unique and needs another with her level of alieness. The professor takes on a student researcher to assist in his plans. Although it is easy to learn from past mistakes, it is not easy to predict new ones and things begin to get out of hand. Soon there are bodies to be hidden and aliens to deal with as well as the government once they manage to find out what is going on.

This one lacks the feeling and menace of the earlier films and is far more upbeat. It is a different story from the first two and there is no explanation for the proliferation of the hybrids. All in all it is not what one would look for if you wanted more of the same. While different in many ways there is still good alien action and plenty of nudity like the original. But if you want a development and not just a continuation, then you might really enjoy this one. With a young protagonist this one should appeal to a different audience.

For an innocent man exonerated by newly found DNA evidence, release from prison is only the beginning. Shattered lives aren't so quickly pieced back together with a wave of a judge's gavel. After Innocence, a moving and unforgettable documentary, follows the lives of several "exonerees" freed after years--sometimes decades--of wrongful imprisonment for rape or sexual assault. Some of the men have used the opportunity to truly start over--get degrees, forge a new career, rebuild family ties. Others remain broken and bewildered by a judicial system that let them down. And, as one of the exonerees notes, there's nothing in place to assist people wrongly convicted, while there are a host of benefits available to convicts who are out on parole. There are many touching moments in the film, especially showing how the exonerees have banded together in a loose support group; while nothing will ever be the same for any of these men, their recognition for what each other has been though is sometimes enough for them to feel that they can face another day. --A.T. Hurley

Description

After Innocence tells the dramatic and compelling story of the exonerated - innocent men wrongfully imprisoned for decades and then released after DNA evidence proved their innocence. Focusing on the gripping stories of seven men, including a police officer, an army sergeant and a young father that were sent to prison for decades - in some cases death row - for crimes they did not commit, After Innocence explores the emotional journeys these men face when thrust back into society with little or no support from the system that put them behind bars. While the public views exonerations as success stories - wrongs that have been righted - After Innocence shows that the human toll of wrongful imprisonment can last far longer than the sentences served, raising basic questions about human rights and society's moral obligation to the exonerated by placing a spotlight on the flaws in our criminal justice system that lead to wrongful conviction of the innocent.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Lopsided Documentary With Significant Information.......2007-02-22

A telling documentary about the failings of criminal investigative law in the U.S., AFTER INNOCENCE is a poignant, if somewhat stilted, telling of the lives of men who've been wrongfully imprisoned for years and years (sometimes decades and decades) only to be released after advances in DNA evidence free them.

The documentary follows only men through this process, most of them having been identified during their trial by a person who is wrong about them. Not really a surprise, as eyewitness identification is now being proven to be one of the least accurate ways in which to prosecute someone.

The film begins and ends with its focus on Wilton Dedge in Brevard County, Florida. Sentenced to life in prison for sexual battery and burglary, Dedge has steadfastly commented on his innocence since his imprisonment some 22 years earlier. Never having given up, Dedge has the physical evidence collected from his crime sent to a forensic lab for DNA study. By the end of the film, we learn that none of it matches Dedge and he is sure to be released. But the prosecutors from the District Attorney's office are reluctant to let him go. Why?

That's the biggest stickler in the entire film. Even when faced with overwhelming evidence of innocence, our supposed community service men and women are unwilling to admit their errors. That's very frustrating and shown quite well.

The problem with the documentary, though, is that it never really shows the "other side." In other words, the D.A.'s perspective. Perhaps the D.A.'s didn't want to be filmed. But we're never told either way. Only once do we ever see a prosecutor discussing DNA cases, and that is very short indeed. Thus, this gives the After Innocence a very lopsided/one-sided viewpoint. If the D.A.'s didn't want to be filmed, I would've liked to have seen the film-makers attempting to get in to see them only to be rebuked and booted out. Again, we don't know if this happened or if the film-makers ever tried to get the other side.

The other notable portion to the film is that prison affects these men very differently. Vincent Moto seems to have lost his willingness to better himself, while Herman Atkins now has a Ph.D in psychology. Dennis Maher and Nick Yarris seem to have mental health problems thanks to their long and wrongful imprisonment, each appearing either lackluster about life or having an inflated ego about their own importance rather than the importance of the situation itself.

Regardless, After Innocence is informative in its own, one-sided way. Just make sure you check out both sides before deciding on its entire significance.

5 out of 5 stars simply incredible.......2007-02-22

to put it simply, this film is a STUNNING jaw-dropper. it is by far one of the best films i have seen in decades, not because of great film-making techniques, but simply because of its incredibly powerful content. highly worth your time to see the how and why our (U.S.) justice system so consistently malfunctions and to see the wide swath of lives it ravages in the process.

but this is a truly hopeful film, as it shows many exonerees who, after being freed, have risen above the horrors of being imprisoned for 10, 20 years for committing no crime at all; and it shows many of those in the innocence project who make enormous sacrifices of time, effort, and money to save innocent people from the hell of unjust imprisonment and death.

5 out of 5 stars After Innocence, the Machinery that Manufactures Wrongful Convictions Still Operates.......2007-02-11

I saw this movie in a theater, when it debuted in Los Angeles. I estimate there were between 100 and 150 people in the audience. It would hardly be fair to say the event was a movie debut, without pointing out that the movie debut also appeared to be an event actively showcasing the cause of the wrongly convicted. The movie, in my opinion, was excellent and showed the lives of a number of men who had been wrongly convicted of crimes, most involving charges of rape. The men talked about:

# their lives before their convictions,

# what circumstances led to their convictions,

# what their lives were like in jail,

# their struggle to be freed by DNA evidence,

# what their lives were like after exoneration.

Many of the exonerated were struggling to receive compensation for their unjust treatment, and most were struggling to pick up the pieces of their lives after being devastated by the inhumanity of America's legal system. The callousness of the system appeared frequently, while apologies for errors were few and far between. It was difficult to sit through the movie without feeling anger toward the cruelty and injustice America's legal system brought into the lives of these men. It was apparent from the reactions of others in the audience I was not alone in my feelings.

The movie was edited so that it also included the struggles of Barry Scheck, Peter Neufeld and others in the Innocence Project as they worked to free the wrongly convicted. At one point in the movie a volunteer showed bundle after bundle of letters (from prisoners), in filing cabinets that staff had not even had the resources to open yet. It was an appalling site, considering the perilous existence of some DNA evidence in "official" storage.

After the movie, the writer/director Jessica Sanders conducted a Q & A with the audience. Along with her, were about half a dozen of the wrongly convicted men, some of whom were in the movie. An attorney who had assisted in the project was also on stage. In response to an audience question, the attorney stated that it was his guess that between 1% and 5% of the current prison population was wrongly convicted. He went on to say, "That doesn't sound like much, but given that our present prison population is 2,000,000, that works out to between 20,000 and 100,000 human beings." Although it was never mentioned in the Q & A, or the movie, 93% of those incarcerated are male.

On the way out of the theater, we passed by tables that sold baseball caps, t-shirts, books, and CD's. The book that was on sale was entitled "Surviving Justice," and is also available through Amazon.com.

I paused momentarily at one of the tables, while my friend asked questions. In several subsequent discussions with audience members, and people at tables, I mentioned that I was a member of the National Coalition of Free Men Los Angeles, and said, "We encounter a lot of men who are 'falsely accused.' You know, the preliminary step leading to wrongful convictions."

In the lobby, my friend asked one of the attorneys in the group what culpability the government had for those wrongly convicted. He was told, "Unless it can be shown that the government was malicious, there is none." Perhaps the government hasn't learned yet that the American public is very angry about all the "witch hunting" of innocent men going on, but there is a growing effort underway to "educate" them of that fact.

I highly recommend the movie After Innocence for one and all. The stories of wrongly convicted men, who have regained their freedom, is a heroic effort worth knowing. The stories of wrongly convicted men, struggling to regain the shattered pieces of their lives, is an American tragedy worthy of every citizen's help and support to make right.

2 out of 5 stars Predator ripoff.......2006-07-22

This movie doesn't start out too bad, a mad scientist creates some creature out of DNA yadda yadda yadda he starts killing everyone. But the second half - good grief! We're talking Predator ripoff right down to a scene-by-scene basis. There's also this "heartfelt" funeral for a character that we couldn't possibly care less about that's about enough to make you barf. Then more scenes stolen directly from Predator.

Poor Jurgen Prochnow. He's a really good actor. If I were him, I'd kill my agent with a very slow acting poison, just like he did to Jurgen's career.

2 out of 5 stars An Alien/Predator rip-off.......2006-07-21

But it's good cheesy fun. It's a low-budget "epic" filmed in the Philippines.Too bad MST3K didn't tackle this one.

The hero is a likeable, misunderstood guy;of course,he has to engage in an ancient shamanic ritual consisting of body paint (???) to fight the evil creature.

The heroine is the Usual Damsel in Distress. She gets to run around&be rescued a lot.

Then there's the Ubiquitous Annoying Boy.He whines so much you end up wishing the alien had him as an appetizer.

Jurgen Prochnow gets to overact as the Eeeevil Mad Scientist. He's mastered the cliche.Yay!

As for the alien,it looks like it came out of 'Alien.' HR Giger didn't waste his money suing the director.

If you want to have a Bad Movie Night, this is perfect!

3 out of 5 stars PREDATOR CLONE.......2004-11-25

D.N.A. is a low budget, but effective, clone of the two PREDATOR movies in a lot of ways, particularly in the way the alien creature appears and reappears.
Mark Dascascos (usually in martial arts films) plays a sincere young doctor whose genetic breakthrough is stolen by nasty scientist Jurgen Prochnow. Prochnow has genetically reproduced an alien creature with deadly powers and plans to sell it as a war weapon to the highest bidder. Dascascos is joined by Robin McKee as a CIA doctor/operative to find this creature and destroy it. A cute if somewhat irritating little boy leads them into the jungle where the creature has been killing the natives. Most of the special effects are adequate, but there is one glaring bad one involving the crashing of an enemy helicopter. The performances are okay, but Prochnow overdoes it a little, but that's expected with mad scientists I guess.
Certainly not a classic, but for scifi and creature fans, it is passably entertaining.
