No one uses color like Chinese director Zhang Yimou--movies like Raise the Red Lantern or Hero, though different in tone and subject matter, are drenched in rich, luscious shades of red, blue, yellow, and green. House of Flying Daggers is no exception; if they weren't choreographed with such vigorous imagination, the spectacular action sequences would seem little more than an excuse for vivid hues rippling across the screen. Government officers Leo and Jin (Asian superstars Andy Lau and Takeshi Kaneshiro) set out to destroy an underground rebellion called the House of Flying Daggers (named for their weapon of choice, a curved blade that swoops through the air like a boomerang). Their only chance to find the rebels is a blind women named Mei (Ziyi Zhang, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) who has some lethal kung fu moves of her own. In the guise of an aspiring rebel, Jin escorts Mei through gorgeous forests and fields that become bloody battlegrounds as soldiers try to kill them both. While arrows and spears of bamboo fly through the air, Mei, Jin, and Leo turn against each other in surprising ways, driven by passion and honor. Zhang's previous action/art film, Hero, sometimes sacrificed momentum for sheer visual beauty; House of Flying Daggers finds a more muscular balance of aesthetic splendor and dazzling swordplay. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous cast, beautiful production.......2007-09-15

Decades of fine Chinese film-making seemed to have reached a peak when "Crouching Tiger" was embraced so completely by the American film-going public. (The Chinese thought it was mediocre and couldn't understand the fuss.) Director Zhang Yimou has made fine films for years, and 2 of them, "Hero" and "House of Flying Daggers" reached American shores in 2003. "House" made more top 10 lists, but "Hero" was the official Chinese entry for the Oscars. "House of Flying Daggers" is a wonderful action piece beautifully embracing a terrific love story. Yimou's trademark use of gorgeous color schemes is again awesome, and the casting of Takeshi Kaneshiro, Andy Lau & Ziyi Zhang has to be the most pretty trio of actors put in any one film. Ms. Zhang is indeed luminous. Mr. Yimou's later "Curse of the Golden Flower" was disappointing, though still pretty to look at. The Tang Dynasty seems to appeal to Mr. Yimou, allowing him to create his image of that most opulent period.I was highly entertained.

3 out of 5 stars almost romantic. .......2007-08-28

On the surface, this thing is awesome eyecandy. lush scenery, beautiful costume, fantastic action sequences, blah, blah, blah, blah. Yes, it looks exquisite in all its widescreen delight and the sound is incredible. But... just beneath the thin, oh so slick veneer, is the over the top melodrama, the very one dimensional bad guy, the doomed romance, and all the cookie cutter disposable solidiers. This was a whole lot of fun to watch, and very moving at times, but on closer review it starts to resemble something like bamboo. Solid to a point, but hollow on the inside, and very likely to split apart when over used. Visually superb at times? of course. Entertaining? sure. Satisfying as a story? well...almost.

5 out of 5 stars Unrealistic.......2007-08-27

First of all, let me explain. Yes, I know this is a fantasy tale that where we are supposed to suspend belief in order to enjoy the film, but I think these Chinese films take things a bit too far. For example, even in Spiderman where we are given a superhuman man with spider powers BUT his movements, his actions, his jumps seem to be what a person with his stregnth and abilities might be able to do. Ultimately the laws of physics are loosely followed. I understand it's a Chinese martial arts movie and the characters will do some incredible things, which is great but they do things that are completely and utterly impossible. Um... float for no reason. Prop themselelves between two bamboo stems even though in reality the pressure would push the bamboo sticks away from each other. Stuff like that just makes it hard for me to enjoy the movie.
Beyond this, the characters are cold and we are never really given a reason to care about them. Yes, the movie is beautiful at times and perhaps this is the only thing that saves it. Even the story isn't that bad but it needed to be developed and the characters needed to be fleshed out.
If you want to see a really good Chinese movie then I suggest you see "Together" by Hong Chen. Enjoy.

2 out of 5 stars The House of Flying Chaos..............2007-08-12

I was a great fan of CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON, so, when I heard that another wuxia film was being brought to the United States, I flocked to the movie theater to see this one. Director Zhang Yimou (HERO) sets the scene for us with broad use of color and drama. I can't argue that the opening dance sequence with the blind courtesan (Ziyi Zhang) isn't pretty eyepopping. However, the convoluted plot left MUCH to be desired. Granted, I am up for an intriguing plot centered on a battle of wits anyday (I loved HERO), this film was, for me, one melodrama after another. Without giving away too much of the plot, I will say that I was particularly offended by one depiction of rape and abuse that then blossoms into a relationship between victim and victimizer. Also, there were some scenes intended to be highly dramatic in tone, and I recall several members of the audience giggling over the absurdity of the thoroughly unbelievable acting and the stylized violence (a familiar sequence in Chinese wuxia cinema is that where you see blood dripping from the slain/maimed individual's mouth). There aren't really heros here--just different degrees of villainhood, and, for the most part, it's a battle based on manipulation, and it all stems from the society of the House of Flying Daggers and interrogating those possibly affiliated with the organization. I would advise you to skip this one. It's just a little too much......I can't imagine how it transfers to the small screen, as a DVD, but I would imagine it just looks absurd on a smaller scale.

3 out of 5 stars Beautifully styled film that makes up for what it lacks in breathtaking visuals..........2007-08-09

`House of Flying Daggers' is truly no `Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon'. That's in no way to say it's not visually stunning and engrossing, it just lacks a little of that flare and a lot of that plot that made `Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' so brilliant. Director Zhang Yimou keeps his film heavy on the action but very light on substance. It still delivers, don't get me wrong, and I was not entirely disappointed while it's credits began to roll but I will say that when you've been spoiled with something like Ang Lee's `Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' you begin to wish that every Asian film could be that wonderful.

The film centers around a group of rebels referring to themselves as the House of Flying Daggers, or more specifically around one of their members, a blind woman named Mei posing as a showgirl. This rebel group is in direct conflict with the government and so two officials, Leo and Jin devise a plan to infiltrate the rebel's lair. Jin disguises himself as a lone rebel himself, rescues her from the hands of government officials and offers to escort her back to her group. Along the way though, they are met with adversity. The governor, unknowing of Leo and Jin's plan, has sent out his best soldiers to track down and kill Mei and Jin. The fight sequences that follow are brilliantly choreographed and directed. In fact, I'd be tempted to say they rival or maybe even transcend those in Lee's lauded film, but I haven't seen `Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' in a few years and so I'm not the best judge at the moment. The fight within the trees alone though is breathtaking.

As has been mentioned, the use of color within this film really takes it to another level. The fight sequences are even more spectacular thanks to the wide range of reds and greens, whites and yellows all wrapped up within the natural backdrop to the scenes. It's beautiful to look at, elegant and effortlessly put together. The actor's movements are so well calculated, so controlled, and they perfectly complement the mood each scene intends to portray.

`House of Flyer Daggers' fails in the one aspect of plot, for everything else is truly splendid. The above plot in itself would have sufficed, and it does have more twists and turns than an episode of `The Sopranos' but it tries a little too hard to transfer into a love story and it's there that it falls flat. I don't want to give away too much of those `twists and turns' but I will say that it loses it's focus towards the end, and instead of delivering a final battle between rebel's and government (a battle I was salivating over in expectation of) it gives us a battle between star-crossed lovers that delivers in beauty but fails to deliver in emotional depth and thus becomes just another fight.

The acting is decent all the way around, but Ziyi Zhang is truly the standout. Her performance is so tempered, so controlled it transcends the performances of her cast mates and becomes award worthy, Oscar nomination worthy even. She's the only actor in the cast that is able to really connect with the audience, in such a deep way that even though I found the love story aspect a little phony and unbelievable I believed her character, I believed her side of that love and that in itself was a major accomplishment for Zhang. Ziyi has got quite the resume going for herself, and she has all the potential in the world to be an Oscar winning actress. Once the academy learns to embrace her stylized performances over her more Americanized (say `Memoirs of a Geisha') then they will see the beauty and grace that we all see.

The film, while far from perfect, still offers quite a bit for the far on this form of martial arts film. The direction is top notch and the scenery just as breathtaking as the choreography. I surely enjoyed myself and would watch this film again. So sit back and enjoy, just don't expect anything too deep emotionally, just some beautiful, graceful and in the end brutal battles that more than make up for what this film lacks.

While women shed more than a few tears over Love Story back in 1970, men had their equivalent with Brian's Song on TV. This biopic about the Chicago Bears' Brian Piccolo and Gale Sayers is no mere sports film. It's one of those transcendent stories that struck a rare cultural nerve, a sensitive film about love, friendship, cancer, racial harmony, and football that came along at just the right time. James Caan is at his free-spirited best as Piccolo, and Billy Dee Williams is very charming as the quiet Sayers destined for superstardom. Roommates and rivals, these two rookies soon become best friends because of their competitive natures and complementary personalities. When Piccolo becomes stricken with cancer, his relentless will to live inspires the talented Sayers to reach his athletic potential. Jack Warden, as the masterful coach George Halas, superbly manipulates the ying and yang relationship for all it's worth. Michel Legrand's melancholy theme still lingers in the mind as one of the all-time greats. --Bill Desowitz

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2007-08-25

This movie is well done by Caan and Williams. It was based on the true story of football player Brian Piccolo. The actors made it look true to life. I have both the 71 version and 01 version. Both are good because the newer version had the same feel, just different actors who played the roles of Piccolo and Sayers, who, by the way, were just as good. Well worth the money I spent on it.

5 out of 5 stars Brian's Song.......2007-07-03

Based on Gale Sayers's autobiography, this indelible made-for-TV movie tells the true story of a friendship born through football that ends tragically. Coming off his success in "The Godfather," Caan is terrific as the spirited Piccolo, whose gutsy yet graceful attitude inspires Sayers (played with quiet, rookie confidence by Williams) to achieve his full potential. The craggy, always reliable Jack Warden co-stars as Bears Coach George Halas, and Shelly Fabares (from TV's "Donna Reed Show") is also solid as Brian's steadfast wife, Joy. This poignant, inspirational tale unfolds over just 75 minutes, but keep the Kleenex handy, as few remain unmoved by the end.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic for the Ages.......2007-05-20

I have watched Brian's Song many, many times over the years and with every viewing, I am warmed by this story of friendship, courage and hope. It is based on the true story of Brian Piccolo and Gale Sayers, two Chicago Bears football players who played back in the 1960's.

Like many movies based on life, certain aspects of the story are fictionalized. For example, Brian did not have cancer in his right lung as the movie attests, but embryonal cell carcinoma in his chest cavity that eventually metastasized to his left breast and left lung, heart and liver--and even into his jaw. He did not die as easily or look nearly as healthy as Cann does; his illness and death are really sanitized and "Hollywood-ized". Also, although Brian and Gale were good friends in real life, they were not best friends. However, Caan and Williams do a brilliant job portraying their characters and it is easy to believe from their performances that these two characters do indeed care for one another.

There are several moving moments in this movie. The locker room scene is particularly touching because many of the players featured in this scene had heard the *real* Gale Sayers tell them that "Pic is sick. . .real sick" only a year and a half before, so we can assume the tears welling up in the players' eyes are genuine. Ed O'Bradovich and Dick Butkus, both of whom were friends of Piccolo's (and were pallbearers at his funeral), make appearances in the film.

Another great touch is the archival footage of Sayers and Piccolo running the ball and making touchdowns. Not only does the footage remind us of what an amazing player Sayers was and the dogged determination to succeed that Brian possessed, it reminds us that these people were real, that they did indeed exist. These "real life" touches adds a lot of poignancy to the story. Most of the footage of the real Brian comes from a game the Bears played against the Pittsburgh Steelers on November 9, 1969--the only game the Bears won that season. Although he did not know it, Brian was already very sick with cancer during this game, yet he played his heart out and even scored a touchdown--which is captured in the movie. This was the second to the last game he ever played. He was diagnosed with cancer only a week and a half later.

A final touch that really "makes" the movie is the musical score by Michal Legrand. The Brian's Song theme is a perfect blend of hope and sadness and is enough to make you cry all by itself. Interestingly, the real Brian's wife, Joy, said that Legrand was one of his favorite composers.

The DVD contains a few "extras" including a so-so audio commentary by Billy Dee Williams and James Caan. The commentary is witty in some spots, but it does not provide much insight into the movie's "behind the scenes" elements. Caan reminds us that the movie was made only about a year after Brian Piccolo's death and several times he mentions that he felt the "weight" of playing the role of a person that the entire Chicago Bears team dearly loved.

If you enjoy this movie, I highly recommend that you read Jeannie Morris' biography of Brian Piccolo entitled Brian Piccolo: A Short Season. It tells the whole story of Brian's life both on and off the field and goes into great detail about his illness and the tremendous courage and humor with which he faced it.

5 out of 5 stars Great classic ... .......2007-05-07

I remember seeing this film with my girlfriends a long time ago. Haven't seen it ever since. That's why I bought it, I was so impressed with it at that time and still am. It's a great classic, I recommend it to everyone. Btw it teaches you a lot about true friendship.

5 out of 5 stars Great when you need a good cry!.......2007-03-10

I first saw Brian's Song when I was about 13 years old. It made me laugh and cry. My sisters and I would wait anxiously for it to be re-run. This is a great sports movie about relationships and like "Remember the Titans" it is based on a true story which makes it even more poignant.

It is a 30 year old made for TV movie, so the production values are not great, but the story and the performances by Billy Dee Williams and James Caan are amazing.

I recommend this to anyone looking for a funny, sad and touching movie

Rodgers and Hammerstein made BIG musicals--sweeping song and dance numbers, elaborate stagings, sweet heroines, and love struck but confused heroes. Flower Drum Song has all these elements, so why is it so little known? Perhaps because it had the misfortune to be released the same year (1961) as West Side Story, or maybe because at 133 minutes it's overlong, or did the audience have trouble accepting an all-Asian cast in an Asian-themed musical? Whatever the reasons, it's time to recognize Flower Drum Song for the gem it is.

Picture bride Mei Li (Miyoshi Umeki) and her father arrive in San Francisco, having smuggled themselves into the country so Mei Li can marry nightclub owner Sammy Fong (whose mother arranged the whole deal). Mei Li is fascinated by the city and immediately charms its denizens with a delicate rendition of "One Hundred Million Miracles." Fong (Jack Soo), who is having an affair with his star singer, the sexy and scheming Linda Low (Nancy Kwan), pawns Mei Li off on the Wang family, whose eldest son, Ta (James Shigeta), needs a wife (at least that's what his father has decided). Old Chinese culture and new American ideals clash at every turn, with the elders struggling to understand their Americanized children and the children struggling to accept and honor their heritage. Though the movie is dated in some respects, the theme of assimilation vs. separation holds up remarkably well and rings true. "The Other Generation" beautifully illustrates the generation gap.

As this is a romantic musical, you know from the beginning which couples will end up together. The most famous song is "I Enjoy Being a Girl," sung by Linda Low as she dresses to seduce Wang Ta. Though too many triangulations and misunderstandings prolong the inevitable conclusion, Flower Drum Song is a very enjoyable and often funny ride. --Dana Van Nest

I liked the film very much, but you must read the book. I mean, watch the film first and then read the book. Read it out loud to an appreciative someone such as a child. Use rPaul Harvey (dramatic) voice when you read. I love the poetry... You don't get the poetry in the film.

I thought the costuming left a little to be desired. All the beadwork was done in pony (large) beads. Hallmark family rated.

A misfit drama in the grand Southern (by way of Hollywood) tradition, A Love Song for Bobby Long takes its cue from Carson McCullers's The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter. Re-establishing his indie-cred, John Travolta adds Bobby Long to his gallery of colorful characters. Hobbled by an infected toe, the 50-something Bobby is a white-haired, unshaven, vodka-soaked mess. But he's also a former English professor, and the piles of books in his ramshackle house, and the authors he drunkenly quotes give him a wounded dignity. Just how wounded will be revealed over the course of this atmospheric tale of redemption and penance. Bobby lives with Lawson Pines (Gabriel Macht), his former teaching assistant who is writing a book about his mentor, a project deferred by drinking, sitting around with the locals, or engaging in quotation oneupsmanship. Scarlett Johansson (Lost in Translation, Ghost World) holds her own against Travolta ("You are such a shameless ham," she chastises the loquacious Bobby) as Pursy, the estranged daughter of Lorraine, a recently deceased singer-songwriter in whose house Bobby and Lawson reside. A battle of wills between the two men and the headstrong young girl gives way to the formation of a tentative family unit. Pursy agrees to return to high school if Bobby and Lawson quit drinking. There will be the expected revelations, recriminations, and dramatic confrontations, but what makes this Love Songresonate are the performances by a cast that rarely hits a false note. --Donald Liebenson

4 out of 5 stars The beauty of balmy nights and dirty windows.......2007-09-10

This film is awesome, using the original meaning of the word which is awe- inspiring. I've always been a John Travolta fan and anyone that is I think would agree with me when I say he brings to mind eternal youth. So to see him playing a jaded and bitter character with white hair is a tribute to the true natural talent of the man. I think he's one of the bravest actors we have to take parts that are physically unflattering but unexplainably beautiful because of the amount of spirit and pure joy that went into becoming 'unflattering.' Even Hairspray it looked like he was having a ball and I know he must have been thinking "the reporters will start back up with the 'he's gay' bit, as if saying someone's gay enough times will turn them gay. John Travolta is wonderful in everything he's done because when you wake up every morning and say "I can't wait to get to work!" it shows. He's like Southern comfort food, something that you grew up with and you know will always be around.

5 out of 5 stars A Love Song for Bobby Brown.......2007-08-23

John Travolta has never been better. This is his best work. I'm not even a huge fan of his but, good golly miss molly, this is a stand up and cheer performance. Scarlett Johansson is always a sure fire hit in my book and this movie continues to support my admiration for an exceptional performance. Do yourself a favor and buy this DVD. It is utterly amazing.

4 out of 5 stars Quite a Love Song for Bobby Long.......2007-03-30

I loved this film! Some critics knock the movie for using some clichés and there are some aspects of New Orleans in particular that are romanticized. Romanticism aside, the cinematography is beautiful and the film features many of New Orleans great attractions such as the Café du Monde, the old mansions of the garden district, and the dreamy Audubon Park. Of course, what is New Orleans without music? The soundtrack is a wonderful mix of jazz and twangy southern blues that is nicely incorporated into the plot. If that doesn't do it the acting alone makes the film worth seeing. The script is well-written, and the actors do a good job of making it seem spontaneous and real. I never felt like they were reading from a script. John Travolta's performance as the washed-up Bobby Long, an alcoholic former English professor who reminisces about his glory days is magnificent and one of his better performances. Gabriel Macht, plays Lawson Pines, the brilliant, guilt-ridden writer who can't seem to write anything good. Macht, best known for independent films, is one of the better kept secrets of the film world. His allegiance to Bobby is touching and also leaves you wondering, "Why?" His performance is very well done. Scarlett Johansson who plays Pursy Will completes the package and is the powerhouse of the film, but does so without overshadowing the other cast members. Her portrayal of a lonely, strong-willed young woman who reminds her two has-been roommates that they are still alive and capable of much more than drunken lechery is superb and believable. Overall, I think the film is very well done and entertaining. It is a story that highlights many human frailties and struggles and it demonstrates that redemption can be found through friendship and family in the most unlikely places.

4 out of 5 stars SLOW AND STEADY .......2007-03-28

I do love exciting cliff-hanger types of movies, but I also love character studies and marvelous acting. That's what A Love Song For Bobby Long is all about!

If you're an adrenilin junkie, you probably should pass. But if you like a solid cast and a quirky but solid story, try this movie!

3 out of 5 stars Better than you've heard.......2007-03-26

Damaged characters in NOLA. Before Katrina. Makes it even more interesting than anticipated. Travolta works well. Worth a look.

Harvey Fierstein had a smash hit on Broadway with the stage version of this story about a drag queen, but whatever the magic there was doesn't show up in this film adaptation. (Fierstein allegedly couldn't line up an A-list or even B-list director in 1988 to tackle the gay story line, so he agreed to work with Paul Bogart, a ubiquitous television director but an undistinguished feature filmmaker.) Fierstein's performance is fine, but likely a shadow of his live work, while Anne Bancroft is very strong in the role of his character's mother. Matthew Broderick went against the tide of fear shared by most Hollywood actors at the time about playing gay characters. The times have certainly changed since then. --Tom Keogh

Description

An on-screen adaptation of the Tony- award-winning play about a Jewish homosexual who, except for a different sexual preference, goes through the same struggles of love, jealousy and self-doubt that affect us all.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Harvey Fierstein - Genius .......2007-06-09

Ever since seeing him accept the Tony for his adaptation of "La Cage" I have had a tremendous admiration for the sheer creative genius of Harvey Fierstein. But "Torch song Trilogy" has got to be the icing on the cake; the cream on the top of Mt. Everest; the spark that set off Guy Fawlks Day on the 5th of November in London!

And as if the tale wasn't enough, that fantastic narration by Mr. Fierstein at the end of the film was just by far and away the best "special feature" I have ever had the pleasure of hearing! (Normally I avoid listening to a narrative over a movie I have only just watched!!)

And although I think the late and great Anne Bankroft was superb as the mother, I confess I would like to have seen Estelle Getty in the performance extolled by the author.

As a totally "square" viewer of this performance, I would hazzard a guess that in another 50 years or so "Torch Song" will have reached the level of film classics. The death scene of Matthew Broderick in the story was simply devastating!

For sheer entertainment and creative competence, my vote would have to go to Mr. Fierstein.

5 out of 5 stars Come out with a shout.......2007-03-09

A quadruple all star cast topped off by Anne Bancroft and harvey fierstein. The story about a gay guy, whose Mom loves him, but wishes he wasn't. Harvey Fierstein's performance as gay Arnold gives a performance of a lifetime. He has never been better and will never be better.Being a gay female impersonator in New York confronts him with daily challenges, crisis', brief moments of happiness and loads of grief. This is a down to earth flick that tells the story, I'm a person and I deserve to live too. Once a Broadway play and now a film too good to miss

5 out of 5 stars I loved this movie..........2007-01-10

Suffice to say that this movie shows how each of us needs to have connections with others that are supportive and loving, regardless of sexual orientation, age, gender, or sex.

"TORCH SONG TRILOGY"
Like Aged Wine

Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride

Some of may have noticed that I have departed from my regimen of reviewing new film to go back into the past and relook at more of the memorable films that cleared the path and help us make our way to where we are. Interestingly enough, some of the early "gay" films were made by major Hollywood studios; some of the very same studios that forced their actors to stay in the closet and in some cases would never touch a film with a gay subplot today. One of these films is the heroic "Torch Song Trilogy", the film adaptation of Harvey Fierstein's award winning stage play. Made in 1988, the movie was a major move for Hollywood and for us. The movie follows ten years in the life of Arnold Beckoff, a gay male as he moves through life. Arnold is a female impersonator who dreams of finding Mr. Right, marrying him and raising a child. If you like to laugh and cry in movies then this is f=definitely for you, The director, Paul Bogart, manages to draw out the entire range of emotions in this film and as Arnold mumbles his mantra, "There's nothing I need from anyone except love and respect". We want to cheer him on. To cheer him is to cheer ourselves and that is what this movie is all about--finding out where we fit in the scheme of things.
Arnold Beckoff is the main character and it is the study of his character upon what the film focuses. This is a wonderful movie but it could have been even more wonderful. The gay characters are mostly stereotypical and are portrayed as very promiscuous. Time also moves through the movie very quickly. But many instances in the movie do ring true mainly because of the performance of Fierstein.
Here is a movie that is packed with good intentions and has a great deal going for it especially due to the brilliant portrayal of Arnold by Fierstein. As" Virginia Hamm", the drag persona, he is brilliant. We see how Virginia/Arnold has dealt with and deal with the obstacles of life. Giving a wonderful performance as Arnold's mother is the late Anne Bancroft and in cameo roles are some of the most famous gay models around.
This is a solid movie and will keep you laughing you watch Fierstein's "Doris Day with a dick".

4 out of 5 stars Poignant and moving story. It's also a comedy. Really fine film........2006-10-25

Writen by and starring Harvey Fierstein, this 1988 film was adapted from the stage play. It's set in the New York world of gays in the 1970s, before AIDS. But even then, life was certainly not bliss for Harvey Fierstein. From early childhood Harvey knew he was different. As an adult, he works as a feminine impersonator and has accepted himself, but every day he has to confront his gayness. He uses humor to cover up his hurts and that's why this film can be considered a comedy as well as a drama. But even though I laughed out loud at certain points, it is still a poignant and moving story of an individual's search for love and respect.

There are two men in Harvey's life. One is Ed, a bisexual who can't quite come to terms with living as a gay man. He actually gets married and Harvey and the new "love of his life", Alan, played by Mathew Broderick are invited for a visit. Naturally there are complications. But the two men resolve them, move to a new apartment and make plans to adopt a 15-year old gay boy. It's then that tragedy strikes and Alan is viciously murdered.

The most important relationship, however, is Harvey's relationship with his mother, played by Ann Brancroft. She's supposed to be Jewish with all the Jewish stereotypical expressions. Sorry, but I didn't get it. She comes across as a caricature rather than a real person. And, had she played the role better, I might even have had a small amount of sympathy for her. This didn't happen. All I did was be amused as she tried to act Jewish. It's a good role. It just needed a better actress.

With the exception of Ann Bankcroft's acting, I really liked this film. Harvey Fierstein is outstanding and it clear that the role comes straight from his heart. The rest of the cast did a good job and the cinematography was good. As a side note, part of this movie was filmed across the street from where I live. I even remember when they were filming it. It depicts the neighborhood as a dangerous one. That is not true at all. But, after all, this is the movies.

I definitely recommend Torch Song Trilogy and give it a high recommendation. It depicts a time and a place in the world of gay men that has unfortunately ended when AIDS came on the scene. I just wish that the casting would have been better for the mother's role.

5 out of 5 stars Good Clean Fun.......2007-06-02

My toddler and I are enjoying this DVD immensely! So much that's available to watch includes excitement or lessons about life but not good clean fun and happiness. This DVD is a reminder to me of the more carefree attitude I had as a child and which seems to be lacking in most children older than seven years of age today. We also love Heigh Ho! Sing-Along Songs and Disneyland Fun. The old Disney songs and movies encouraged healthy imagination, and all of these reflect that in the songs.

5 out of 5 stars Ella still singing great.......2007-08-23

A wonderful CD of unreleased Ella material from the 70's and 80's that has been remastered with the London Symphony. Splendid arrangements wrapped around beautiful singing by the one and only Ella. I highly recommend this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Ella would be proud.......2007-08-04

Surprising that only one person so far has reviewed We Love Ella! This is not your usual boring tribute to a sublime talent. There was not a false note. The arrangements were superb. One might complain that there could have been more performance footage of Ella, but some of the numbers might have been cut and that would have been too bad. Except for Nancy Wilson -- who wisely modified her performance to Ella's simpler style -- We Love Ella! featured mostly young performers with great pipes really making things swing! Biggest surprise of the night: Wynonna Judd's sexy, show-stopping rendition of "Ain't Misbehavin'" And Liz Wright was surely channeling Ella direct from the Pearly Gates!

4 out of 5 stars Nice Concert.......2007-08-01

I saw this on PBS and liked it much more than I thought I would. Singers I've always found hopelessly boring such as Patti Austin and Monica Mancini were good and held my attention. I especially liked Natalie Cole's vocal riffs in her duet on Mr. Paganini with Austin. The highlight, besides the Ella clips, was Nancy Wilson singing Someone To Watch Over Me. She put her mannerisms in check and gave a disciplined, moving performance and truly deserved the standing ovation she received. She looked gorgeous too. I would have preferred seeing some of Ella Fitzgerald's stylistic descendents such as Roberta Gambarini, Dianne Reeves or Dee Dee Bridgewater rather than Ledisi, Ruben Studdard and Lizz Wright but these younger performers were entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars Andre Rieu - Love Songs.......2007-09-10

Andre Rieu had been a member of the Dutch Symphony Orchestra mainly playing classical music on his Stradivari violin. He also was the Concert Master. Eventually he got tired of it, and thought of a way to bring more entertainment to a larger group of people, notjust classical music lovers.
He started out with Johann Strauss music, hired women violin and other musical instrument players. Andre Rieu asked the women to dress up in nice fancy clothes and swing along with the beautiful music of Strauss. It is a very professional group that offers charming musical entertainment. Andrej Rieu and his group travel all over the world,. They also have performed in the U.S. Highly recommend any Andre Rieu performance.

This Program has a variety of Rieus Songs, that from other dvds are on. It takes some of the most beautiful and romantic Songs of him and puts them on to one convenient dvd. Everyone who is a fan should buy.

As mentioned in the other review, this DVD is a real ripoff! 5 of the 14 songs are from "Andre rieu in tuscany" and the rest are music videos of andre walking around the european country side. Andre is an amazing conductor and musician, but he is at his best when playing live in front of a huge crowd. I would strongly recommend against buying this particular DVD and would suggest that you buy his live concert ones.
