It's hard to ignore the sad and conspicuous absence of the late John Belushi, but this long-delayed sequel to 1980's The Blues Brothers still has Dan Aykroyd--as Chicago bad boy and blues rocker Elwood Blues--to keep the music alive. Once again, Elwood's trying to reunite the original Blues Brothers Band, and this time he's got a strip-joint bartender (John Goodman) and a 10-year-old orphan named Buster (J. Evan Bonifant) joining him at center stage. Believing that Elwood has kidnapped the kid, the cops are hot on his trail as the reunited band hits the road for the Battle of the Bands in Louisiana and the All-Star Blues Jam that ends the movie in a rockin' blaze of glory. It's a shameless clone of the first film, and nobody--especially not Aykroyd or director John Landis--seems to care that the story's not nearly as fun as the music that's used to stretch it out. Of course there's a seemingly endless parade of stunts, including a nonstop pileup of police cars that's hilariously absurd, but what really matters here--indeed, the movie's only saving grace--is the great lineup of legendary blues musicians. Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Junior Wells, Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Jonny Lang, Eddie Floyd, and Blues Traveler are among the many special guests assembled for the film, and their stellar presence makes you wonder if the revived Blues Brothers shouldn't remain an obscure opening act. The collector's edition DVD includes production photos, the theatrical trailers, and a behind-the-scenes featurette about the making of the film including interviews with the principal cast. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars It's for the music.......2007-07-17

If you're looking for a film that Gene Siskel or Pauline Kael would approve of, then don't go near this. Just don't. The plot's been done a hundred times, including the first Blues Brothers movie.

What makes the thing worthwhile is the music. How hard do you think it was to get all these people together? The last scene alone is worth the $10 the DVD will cost you. B.B. King, Dr. John, and Clapton on the same stage? James Brown and Blues Travelers in the same movie?

Think of the film as a compilation album with lots of car crashes.

3 out of 5 stars "What kind of a man wears sunglasses in a room full of naked women?".......2007-07-12

"Blues Brothers 2000" is a disappointing sequel, and yet for some reason I preferred it to the other disappointing sequel from the World of Aykroyd: "Ghostbusters II". Maybe it's because the greater amount of time that passed between films makes BB2K feel more nostalgic. Or maybe it's because, to the extent that BB2K is a retread of the original "Blues Brothers", the repetition feels more natural and logical than in GB2.

When Elwood is released from prison and discovers that Jake has passed on, what exactly do viewers expect him to do other than attempt to reunite the band? What else would he do to rediscover meaning and purpose in his life? Therefore it makes perfect sense that the first two-thirds of BB2K echoes plot elements from the previous film. Where BB2K falls down is in the third act -- the Battle of the Bands at Queen Mousette's -- which is a spectacular musical climax but leaves much to be desired in comedy-action terms.

I was surprised by how moved I was to see the character of Elwood in another movie, in particular when he plays his harmonica for the first time. But the most remarkable scene in BB2K is probably "Ghost Riders in the Sky", which combines American popular music, a supernatural manifestation, and the Bluesmobile doing something amazing. It's the perfect cinematic summation of Dan Aykroyd's interests and career.

3 out of 5 stars Blues Brothers 2000.......2007-04-08

Not as good as the first movie, of course, but worth a look.

4 out of 5 stars music is life.......2007-03-27

I have The Blues Brothers DVD and CD soundtrack
along with the VHS BB 2000 and CD-Gimme Some Lovin'

I prefer the sequal to the original but I wouldn't have one without the other. The original I just had to have in my inventory because of John Belushi.

At first I didn't think I'd like BB 2000 much but John Goodman's performance was tops; the best replacement for Belushi.

The music was fantastic [Cab Calloway-Minnie the Moocher/Aretha Franklin, Think and the song Sweet Home Chicago]

The stunts with the cars had me laughing [I've a quirky sense of humor] I am from Illinois and laugh at certain types of authoritarian stupidity.

If you're a blues fan musically, you just might enjoy this production. It's not the greatest story ever told but it does represent a moment in time. If all you want to do is enjoy watching without being a critic, this just might be as enjoyable to you as it is for me. I love it.

If Dan Aykroyd decides to make a 3rd movie for the Blues Brothers, I'll buy it. Some of the great artists have passed: it's a treat to see them as though they were still with us, providing the great music of their life.

3 out of 5 stars not all bad.......2007-02-19

If nothing else, you gotta love the music. You just can't have the Blues Brothers without John Belushi.

Director John Singleton (Boyz N the Hood, Rosewood) made an earnest effort in this, his second, film to say a great deal that is true and relevant about living and loving in a violent, difficult time in American history. Janet Jackson plays a beautician and poet who withdraws into herself after her boyfriend is murdered by gangsters. The late Tupac Shakur plays a postman who tries to get through to her, and the two travel on a course through urban America, connecting with family and community. Singleton has so much on his mind that the film comes out a terrible muddle, but there is a certain integrity peeking through the fog. Shakur makes a startlingly good impression in his film debut, and Jackson strips away her star veneer to play something like a real person--and entirely succeeds. Maya Angelou wrote the poems that pass as those penned by Jackson's character, and she also appears in the film. --Tom Keogh

2 out of 5 stars Not Singleton's Finest Moment, But Still Worth Watching.......2007-07-11

It's clear what Singleton attempted to do with this one, and I'd say it was a noble effort. Of course the script could've been tighter and the climax stronger and more rewarding, thus resulting in a more worthwhile film. However, in the film's defense, the charismatic Tupac shines while convincingly helming the sole well-conceived role. He's the best reason -- perhaps the only reason -- viewers should join in on the film's road trip to Oakland. He's subtle but confident, forceful but not heavy-handed, complex but genuine -- all the things that have also made him a legendary (and sorely missed) rapper. On the other hand, regarding Ms. Jackson... Well, I'll attempt to simply and kindly take the high road and say she probably shouldn't attempt to act again (unless she takes some drama classes). Janet simply doesn't get it. She doesn't understand the craft. She "acts" throughout the entire movie, something a skilled and experienced performer would never be caught doing. Perhaps Singleton was just too smitten with her to inform her that performing requires more than just emoting and script recitation. I understand that fans of Janet's music will invariably take issue with my comments, but if they'd simply separate her on-screen skills from her (heavily studio-enhanced) musical skills, I believe they'd have to agree with me. And it doesn't help that Janet's character (Justice) isn't a well-written, fully-developed and focused role; that's Singleton's fault -- not Janet's. Also, in the movie, fans of Maya Angelou will enjoy her cameo and the verses she wrote for Janet's character, a poet. And the fan(s) of Regina King will appreciate the challenging, range-revealing character stretch she takes on: she portrays a sassy, shallow, one-dimensional young lady with an attitude (that's something we've never seen her play before). Overall, Poetic Justice isn't one of Sigleton's finest moments, but again, revisiting Tupac's performance makes it entertaining and somewhat worthwhile.

5 out of 5 stars Realler than most.......2007-05-03

This is a great movie. Shows real life, the difficulties trying to communicate to the opposite sex. and growing up with the struggles of everyday life.

Someone wrote terrible movie and Lucky acts like a dog. . .but if you watch the whole thing and understand it. Here is a guy stuck with a girl he is into, already uneasy from earlier. and the only way to get her attention is to call her names. The frustration should of been apparent.
I would say this is one of Tupac's best works on film. His skill only got better as he matured. But since he was so young. He did a good job. And unlike what was said before, he was acting. He wasnt playing himself. Only someone who listen to the media and news reports to make that judgment, would say that. Then to turn around and praise Janet, for her acting cause of her life experiences? that just dont make sense. She did a good job. I think the Poem was too mature for her character. Maybe it would of been better served if she was older and reminiscing on the trip. But it was a little too much for her.

THe rest of the cast is good. Joe Torry, Regina King and Tone Loc are all great. Showing the everday life, and the struggles trying to survive day to day, and connect with someone.

Better than a Hood Movie, its a great Coming of age/ love story. Its more realistic than most.

5 out of 5 stars Janet Jackson at her best!!!!.......2007-02-14

The film Poetic Justice to me is a great one. The first time I saw this film, I fell in love with it, especially the characters. Janet's character, Justice, struck a chord in me. She went through a lot, but she also gained strength. Tupac's character, Lucky, I fell in love with him. Chicago, what an idiot, and Regina King's character, Iesha, interesting. This film is a good one, and I loved it. One of my favorite films of all time!!!

4 out of 5 stars Great Movie - Bad DVD Release........2006-09-24

I want to start by saying that I didn't see this film when it was first released. I saw it when it came on t.v. one night in '98 or '99. Anyways, I enjoyed the film and I believe it parallels what life is like for many people. Althought I intially saw the the t.v. edit, my feeling about the film only deepened when I bought the tape, and later the DVD. (I do have the original artwork on my DVD cover BTW.)

While I buy Janet's portrayl as Justice, in my opinion, it is Tupac who steals the show. Whether or not he is playing himself, it works. I also buy Regina Kings' performance. She is the ignorant and careless friend That I have tried to save from herself.

While the film does go in many directions and leave me with many unanswered questions, for me real-life isn't much different. There's something in this film that I relate to and whenever I want to escape from my own life for a while, this is one of the films I turn to.

I gave it 4 stars because the DVD itself is lacking. I would have given it 3 stars, but it has Directors' Commentary, which is something I enjoy. :o) I also apreciate the addition of the subtitles, but I would have really loved to see a small documentary or even reflections on the film from Miss Jackson, Regina King - Anyone! And I can't believe there's not even one deleted scene. Pitiful. . .

4 out of 5 stars Shot out to Dennis and Michael...two idiots. .......2006-08-08

1. to Michael: Lucky blames Justice because he was late to Oakland because of the time them two spent on the beach (then he realizes that he was just mad at the time and apologizes to her...

to Dennis (who said "at least Tupac is dead"): may Tupac Amaru Shakur rest in peace..God bless his soul. Some people who just don't understand..but the acting was great...you probably just think it's exaggerated cuz you are ignorant and you haven't seen this type of hood drama. It was actually a very real and accurate account of problems that these type of communities face..and how people actually act (fights in relationships, disrespect between men and women. Lucky was treating Justice in a disrespectful manner..but that is just an accurate portrayal of how men in the hood don't know how to come at a woman that he's interested in..so they just trip.

To all of those good-hearted people who would not bless the death of no-one...and who understand or are open-minded to learn about what life really is like for some people..and the emotioins and pain and joy that they feel ....check out this great movie.

Thank you John Singleton for brightening a day in my life..the day that I chose to rent this movie. Thank you for your honesty in portraying what life is like.

Peace-

5 out of 5 stars Accept It For What It Is.......2007-06-02

It's a Hollywood movie starring world class surfers. Watch it for the waves, not the acting. I give the boys credit for reaching outside their 'comfort zone' and trying to act. It was probably a BLAAAAAST to film!

3 out of 5 stars Old classic surf movie.......2007-05-08

This movie is one by boyfriend loved when he was younger. He still likes to watch it but it is a little strange at times. Shows some classic surfing though-good to try!

3 out of 5 stars In God's Hands.......2006-05-31

Hard to say, really. I liked this movie it was an interesting insight into surfing through a story. I have watched a few surfing movies as I enjoy snowboarding and used to skateboard and if someone is looking for a surf movie they won't find it here this is a B-Movie, with characters and a plot.

It has been critisized for trying to hard to philosophize and agrandize a sport in an inorganic way. This is sort of true, but the movie is still worth it. I like surfing but I don't want a movie full of tastless antics and sessions that leave going I don't really appreciate it. So it works for me the characters are'nt that bad they are not developed as much as I might of liked.

Hey its a good movie maybe not great but good. The soundtrack is great however it has a number of songs that are really really good. Little things like that make the film worth the cost.

5 out of 5 stars great flick.......2006-03-25

This was a gift for my boyfriend, he is from Hawaii and loves to surf. This has been his favorite movie for ages, and I finally found it on DVD. It's a great movie, very spiritual and moving.

WOW.... a must own...... the atmosphere that is present will radiates room wide.... A movie that is felt and seen, a inner call will be welled up inside of your core.... the call for something more, something bigger..it will make your life seems blank and grueling..... grab your deck and run to the farthest remote island, a location were you can't even pronounce the name, paddle out and experience the feel of "in God's hand".

Description

From the producer of "Anne of Green Gables":

"Family programming filled with warmth and charm...." - LOS ANGELES TIMES

This 4-Disc DVD Boxset is the complete third season of "Road to Avonlea" / "Avonlea" (as shown on the Disney channel). Olivia's (Mag Ruffman) simple wedding plans get out of hand as Hetty (Jackie Burroughs) takes over and manages to alienate everyone in the family including Sara (Sarah Polley). Felix's (Zachary Bennett) humorous attempt at making money turns tragic as his horse, Blackie, dies in an accident. Avonlea hires an effervescent and charming new schoolteacher (Christopher Lloyd), whose unorthodox approach to teaching, inspires the children, but leaves the parents suspicious. Sara trades places with Jo Pitts, a street-smart waif who passes as Sara's double. However, as Sara leaves PEI for adventure, she only finds danger and mystery alongside Gus Pike (Michael Mahonen); while Felicity (Gema Zamprogna) lies about her family background in order to gain admission into a prestigious ladies college. On a sad note, this volume ends with the death of one of Avonlea's most beloved townsfolk, Marilla Cuthbert (Colleen Dewhurst); tying this episode into "Anne of Green Gables - The Sequel" and "Anne of Green Gables - The Continuing Story."

5 out of 5 stars ROAD TO AVONLEA THE 3 SEASON.......2007-05-15

GREAT MOVIE YOU JUST WANT TO CONTINUE SEE THE SERIE

5 out of 5 stars Charming........2007-04-06

Charming children and adults get into fun predicaments. If you liked "Little House on the Prairie" or "Anne of Green Gables"; you should like this. Seasons 1-6 are excellent.

Beautiful scenery, farm, horses, period costumes, with women in pretty dresses, period sets, realistic characters, likeable characters, lively pace, and inviting activities, take you to a nicer place.

Christopher Reeve, from the movie "Superman", guest-stars in a melodrama, mysterious but lively episode "A Dark and Stormy Night" (Writer-Hart Hanson). Another good episode is where Sarah and Felicity babysit their little nephew who is a little terror; the "Friends & Relations" episode. Usually an episode is able to focus on just a few of the characters with depth; but in this unique episode, many of the characters interact, at a lively pace. Very creative that the writer (Heather Conkie) was able to involve everyone with depth (and I wonder if it was planned or just happened with the plot). The episode "Vows of Silence" has a scene that is very funny, and another quietly funny/charming scene (Writer-Hart Hanson).

Disney spared no expense to create warm and humorous escapades.

This series has been my best money value; dividing the 13-episodes by the cost: $51÷13 episodes = $3.92 per 46-minute episode. Sells new in Canada for $80.

5 out of 5 stars great season for a great show!.......2004-05-05

Road to Avonlea is my all-time favourite television show, and I'm so pleased that it's becoming available on DVD. Season 3 is an excellent season, and in my opinion, one of the best. There is great character development as the children (especially Felicity) begin to grow up. We also get to see another side of Aunt Janet (other than as Alec's wife), as well as more episodes with Gus Pike. The focus is becoming less on Sara Stanley (although she is still a main character) and more on the rest of the King family.
My only complaint with this DVD is the lack of bonus features. I hope the next RtA DVD includes features such as cast interviews, behind-the-scenes, and bonus footage.

episodes on this DVD (I put a * next to my favourites):

*The Ties that Bind - Olivia and Jasper's wedding! very funny, and very touching

Felix and Blackie - Felix starts a delivery service with his horse, Blackie.

*Another Point of View - Aunt Hetty resigns from teaching Avonlea School, and she is replaced by Professor Dimple, who introduces the students to modern ways of learning.

When she was bad...she was horrid (2 parts) - Sara gets fed up with Aunt Hetty controlling her life, so she runs away and leaves a double (Jo Pitts) in her place.

Aunt Janet Rebels - Aunt Janet campaigns for women's rights to vote.

A Dark and Stormy Night - Gus gets a job at the White Sands hotel and falls for a mysterious guest.

*Friends and Relations - the ladies are off to an auction while the men go ice fishing. Sara and Felicity must mind their mischievous cousin "Lucky".

Vows of Silence - Felicity "borrows" her mother's valuable family heirloom and loses it. She is afraid to confess the truth until she fears it will be too late.

After the Honeymoon - Jasper entertains a (female) scientist Sidney Carver, who is researching bats. Olivia tries to support Jasper, even though she finds the work horrifying.

*The Calamitous Courting of Hetty King - Aunt Hetty is wooed by a dynamic skate salesman, Wally Higgins.

*High Society - Felicity is offered a chance at a scholarship at the prestigious Kingsport Ladies College.

Old Friends, Old Wounds - The town loses a beloved citizen.

Thompson) await the birth of their first baby. Meanwhile, Hetty (Jackie Burroughs) resigns from teaching to pursue a writing career and develops a secret friendship with the new schoolteacher, Clive Pettibone (David Fox). Sara (Sarah Polley) experiences her first adolescent heartache, when she falls for an aging Wild West show cowboy, played by Treat Williams; while Felicity's (Gema Zamprogna) friendship with Gus Pike (Michael Mahonen) turns serious. Looking for places to invest her money, Hetty becomes a not-so-silent partner in the White Sands Hotel and proceeds to make Simon Tremayne's (Ian D. Clark) life a living hell. I have been sent two sets of Road to Avonlea season 4. You sent me a replacement after I reported that dics 3 & 4 contained the same episodes. However the replacement set had the same problem. I sent back the first set you sent me and have kept for now the second one in hopes that the problem can be remedied and you will be able to send the intact set at which time I will return the second defective set.

EXCELLENT MOVIE THAT IS FOR ALL THE FAMILIY, THAT IS FREAT I LOVED

2 out of 5 stars Picture quality dark........2007-05-07

We love the Avonlea series and were willing to pay for a good quality DVD.
Season 3 and 4 are both dark in all scenes that are not outside. Plus, there are 2 identical discs in Season 4 so we are missing one entire disc that has 4 episodes on it. It makes me wonder if these aren't a poorly duplicated product made cheaply and quickly for pure profit.

5 out of 5 stars Charming!.......2006-08-19

Charming children and adults get into various fun predicaments.

If you liked "Little House on the Prairie" or "Anne of Green Gables", you should like this. Seasons 1-6 are excellent (have not seen season season-7).

Beautiful scenery, farm, horses, period costumes and sets, pretty dresses, realistic characters, likeable characters, lively pace, some humor, and inviting activities, take you to a nicer place.

The episode, "The Lady and the Blade" (writer: Deborah Nathan) introduces interesting new characters: the new school teacher, Colonel Clive Pettibone, and his stand-at-attention children. Clive and Hetty are aspiring daring-adventure & dramatic-romance novelists.

The episode "Hearts and Flowers" (writer Hart Hanson) has Chef Pierre La Pierre's truly French niece coming to visit from her convent school and becoming infatuated with a completely innocent (Goose Pike) Gus, to the jealously of Felicity.

This season has my favorite episode, "The Dinner", the romance of Gus and Felicity. Felicity desires to be courted by Gus, without the teasing of the other children. If they can only talk alone. The very end is so subtle, yet so funny, a brilliant ending; (written by Heather Conkie).

Disney spared no expense to create a variety of warm and humorous escapades.

This series has been my best money value; dividing the 13-episodes by the cost: $51÷13 episodes = $3.92 per 46-minute episode. Sells new in Canada for $80.

4 out of 5 stars Too expensive!.......2007-04-23

I loved this series when it was on. I watched it while I was in college and back then the Disney Channel was a premium station so I paid extra for it just so I could watch this show. These sets are just too expensive. I guess not enough people buy them to make it possible for the producer to offer them at the lower price you see for other TV series but I think a lot more people would buy them if they were priced lower. I know I would!

5 out of 5 stars The magical, wonderful world of Avonlea!.......2007-04-15

Watching this series truly brings to mind my own childhood where I used to have many happy adventures with my friends in our small town. In this second season, young Sarah Stanley & her friends find more adventures, with the introduction of some new characters.
The episodes in this season are:
Sarah's Homecoming : Sarah returns to Avonlea after a family tragedy. A sad episode.
How Kissing was Discovered : the blossoming Felicity King pines for love, and suffers a crush... also we are introduced to a new character, a young man who has a sad past.
Aunt Hetty's ordeal : Hetty King is visited by her old rival, Ms Stacey [the very same Ms Stacey, Anne's mentor in Anne of Green Gables]
Of Corsets, and Secrets, and True, True Love: Rachel Lynde, and an old flame? Marilla takes in two orphaned relatives, much to Rachel's chagrin, and the ensuing pandemonium is hilarious.
Old Quarrels, Old Love: Hetty King and her old beau are reunited. A sad episode.
May the Best Man win: Olivia King is wooed by two men, the reliable Jasper Dale, and the pompous ex-beau who abandoned her once before.
Family Rivalry: The other King sibling returns for a brief visit, but things are not all rosy with the King clan.
The Sea Ghost : Michael York plays an old seaman here.Gus Pike's past returns to haunt him.
All that Glitters : the possibility of hidden treasure on the island proves too hard to resist for Sarah, Gus and friends.
Dreamer of Dreams : focuses on Jasper Dale
It's Just a Stage: Sarah's aunt, a famous stage actress comes to visit, with unsettling consequences.
A Mother's Love: does one have to have experienced childbirth to be a 'real' mother? Avonlea is abuzz with the essay competition for Mother's Day.
Misfits & Miracles: Ms Stacey brings a directive that the Avonlea school is to field a hockey team, and Sarah tries to learn how to skate. Also, the theme of development in the town is highlighted here.

The second season is as good or even better than the first. The storylines flow smoothly, and the acting is excellent. We also notice the development of some of the characters, such as Gus Pike, whose story is developed this season. Olivia and Jasper are edging closer to being more than friends, and Sarah is truly at home in Avonlea. This is one of my favorite television series, and reminds me of a much more innocent time, when children truly lived their childhoods, and where good values were treasured and honored.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-01-10

I love this series, so when rating Season 2 as a whole I would give it 5 stars, if this series was purchased for me. I gave it a 1 star for the following reason. It was advertised as subtitled. I purchased this set for my deaf daughter who absolutely loves the series. I had to return this set because she couldn't watch it. Amazon, though, did cheerfully and quickly refund my money. I really hope that this problem is fixed in the future as I would like to purchase it for my daughter.

Charming children and adults get into fun predicaments.

If you liked "Little House on the Prairie" or "Anne of Green Gables"; you should like this. Seasons 1-6 are excellent.

Beautiful scenery, period costumes and sets, pretty dresses, farm, horses, a little humor, realistic characters, likeable characters, lively pace, and inviting activities, carry you to a nicer place.

This season has some interesting episodes:
~Michael York guest-stars in two episodes as a mysterious, sea captain in search of buried treasure ("All That Glitters").
~"Old Quarrels, Old Love", about the rivalry and friendship of Rachel Lynde and Hetty King has an excellent ending that is subtle and touching; without words, yet moving.
~Sarah's cousin comes to visit; famous stage actress, Miss Pigeon Plumtree; a melodramatic episode.
~There's lots of humor in the episode, "A Mother's Love" (writer: Suzette Couture) where Sarah leads Felicity to believe she was switched at birth with a girl of a poor family.

Disney spared no expense to create warm and humorous escapades.

This series has been my best money value; dividing the 13-episodes by the cost: $51÷13 episodes = $3.92 per 46-minute episode. Sells new in Canada for $80.

4 out of 5 stars Not Quite the best, but still better than most shows.......2007-08-26

Season 6 of "Avonlea" as we always knew it by in the US is not quite as excellent as its pervious seasons, but is still worth the purchase none the less. The season begins with one of the best episodes of the series, "The Return of Gus Pike." This episode finally resovles the story arc between Gus Pike, Captain Crane, Abe Pike, and Gus's Mother. In this episode we finally find out why exactly Gus ended up a orphan without a family, and what really happened to his mother Eliza. Janet-Laine Green does a amazing job of portraying Gus's mother and even somewhat resembles him.

The other episodes in this season are kind all over the place. Focusing on many of the different characters. Sara appears in only one episode, and it is basically the big goodbye for Sarah Polley who had, had her fill of the series. In this episode Sara must decide rather she is going to follow her own dreams or those of her Aunt Hetty or Nanny Louisa. The episode also brings back Arthur Pettibone who returns. Definately one of my favorite episodes of the series.

In this season the character of Cecily is replaced by actress Molly Atkinson. Atkinson brings new life and depth to the character that the previous actress was not able to. I'm not saying the prior actress was bad or anything, but Atkinson brings Cecily more in to adulthood. The third episode in the season is called "Christmas in June," and is probably one of the best stand alone stories of the series.

Also during this season, the character of Rachel Lynde suffers two seperate strokes. She must leave her beloved Avonlea and Green Gables and that leaves Hetty King to raise Davey and Dora Keith. It almost seems at this point that the writers were just trying to find something for the very talented Jackie Burroughs to do.

There are several good episodes and several ones that a individual could probably do without. We see less of Sara (again only in one episode), Felicity, and Gus(also only in one), but more of Felix, Hetty, Davey, Dora, Izzy, and Green Gables alum Miss Stacey. Definately a enjoyable season at the very least!

5 out of 5 stars ROAD TO AVONLEA THE COMPLETE SIX SEASON.......2007-05-15

THAT IS A GRAT MOVIE YOU JUST WANT TO SEE ALL OF IT.

5 out of 5 stars Pleasant........2007-04-06

Season-six weakens in episode consistency compared to earlier seasons. Out of 13-espisodes, 8 are pleasant, 2 break believability without the real Cecily, 2 are good, and 1 is excellent. The pleasant stories of Avonlea do continue. The episode, "A Fox Tale", where Felix and Izzy start a business, is excellent with bantering between Felicity and "that annoying boy" Nat Lester.

Sarah appears in one episode.

A different actress plays Cecily, appearing and starring in two episodes. The original actress, in spite of the small part, created a likeable and memorable Cecily with a distinct personality; that she could not be replaced without notice. The two emotional Cecily episodes depend on the audience remembering and liking the original Cecily, but then switch someone else as Cecily. Who's idea was that? If they were unable to sign the original actress for another season after flowers and gifts, they would have done better to leave Cecily out entirely.

This season has less scenic outdoor photography that was so appealing.

The touted "Behind-the-scenes" is only a "preview" of this DVD that you have already bought, and the producer saying it is a nice season.

The writers of my favorite episodes of the early seasons, Heather Conkie, Suzette Couture, and Hart Hanson are missing this season.

These disappointments should be forgiven, in light of this wonderful series. It really is a great series.

You should start with the first season; as seasons 1-5 are best. Charming children and adults get into fun predicaments. If you liked "Little House on the Prairie" or "Anne of Green Gables"; you will like this. The realistic, likeable, characters are people that I would like to know. Avonlea is a place that I would like to visit, with beautiful countryside, farm, horses, period costumes and sets, women in pretty dresses, charm, some humor, interesting activities, and a lively pace.

Disney spared no expense creating fun escapades.

4 out of 5 stars 2 episodes = 1 movie.......2006-06-26

If you haven't seen the Road to Avonlea series this would be a good way to find out if you are going to like it. I liked it and am now buying the series.

Basically, the movie is episodes 1 and 6 cut and edited together to make a reasonably coherent movie. There is a bit of a continuity jump in the middle but that is to be expected.

Road to Avonlea is based on L M Montgomery ('Anne of Green Gables' Fame )stories about Sara Stanley a "poor little rich girl" sent to live with relatives on Prince Edward Island.

It has all the charm and grace of "Anne of Green Gables" and all the humour too. If you are looking for a family friendly movie then this has a lot going for it.

The disk has a small extras section giving some backgound to the series. If you want to know more about the series have a look at the reviews for seasons 1-7.

5 out of 5 stars ROAD TO AVONLEA THE 5 SEASON.......2007-05-15

I AM SO HAPPY THAT I HAD THE OPORTUNITY TO SEE ALL OF IT, EXCELLENT I LOVED AS MY FAMILY DO..

5 out of 5 stars Charming........2007-04-06

Charming children and adults get into fun predicaments.

If you liked "Anne of Green Gables" or "Little House on the Prairie"; then you should like this. Seasons 1-6 are excellent.

The realistic, likeable, characters are people that I would like to know. Avonlea is a place, I would like to visit. I like the beautiful, country-side, the farms, the horses, and the period style of dress, with the women in their pretty dresses, the period sets and homes, the humor, the warmth, the inviting activities, and the lively pace. Avonlea carries you to a nicer place.

Disney spared no expense to create fun and interesting escapades.

I especially liked the episode where Aunt Hetty, Jasper, and Aunt Olivia purchase the Lobster Canning Factory; because Jasper and Olivia are such charming characters in figuring out how to improve the factory.

This series has been my best money value; dividing the 13-episodes by the cost: $51÷13 episodes = $3.92 per 46-minute episode. Sells new in Canada for $80.

The creative team behind 1978's impressive animation feature based on J.R.R. Tolkien's Hobbit return with this entry drawn from Tolkien's famous Lord of the Rings trilogy. It's good work all around, and not at all the kind of feature-length cartoon that reduces good books to treacle. Orson Bean returns as the voice of Bilbo Baggins as well as that of the trilogy's hero, Frodo. John Huston is commanding again as the voice of the wizard Gandalf, and also in the vocal cast are William Conrad, Paul Frees, and Roddy McDowall. --Tom Keogh

1 out of 5 stars Do not buy it.......2007-07-06

I bought this "Lords of the Rings" (animated) DVD (and sold it again on eBay almost nothing).

The movie covered "The Fellowship of the Rings" and "The Two Towers". The Movie was actually well made and I bought "The Return of the King" blindly. I was very disappointed. Part III is not a Kids Book (it is not "The Hobbit" (This DVD was nice and appropriate)). "The Return Of The King" (Animated) is like a bad Disney Movie. I read the books a couple times and after 10 Minutes watching "The Return of the King".. I could not stand it no more and turned it off. I just can give you this advice: DON'T BUY IT! Take your kids to the cinema and watch a nice Disney movie instead.

5 out of 5 stars Grand adaption.......2007-06-25

I found this film to be absolutely wonderful. The many songs were great, and the odd animation was beautiful, especialy the backgrounds. The animation was highly stylized, unlike Ralph Bakshi's Lord of the rings cartoon. Bakshi and his use of rotoscoping was horrid at some points, such as the battle of helm's deep, while this movie is beautiful throuhougt. The design of the creatures and characters was great as well. Truly a superior adaption of one of the greatest works of literature ever written.

1 out of 5 stars good stuff.......2007-05-29

It was nice to see this animated version. I had seen The Hobbit when it came out, but don't think I had seen this. Lots of fun

1 out of 5 stars Garbage! Pure trash!.......2006-10-13

The only reason I gave this one star is because I don't have the option to give it '0'! What pile of stinking refuse this waste of time and money is. Someone here said that you need to keep in mind that this was a made-for-TV cartoon aimed at children, much like the Rankin-Bass version of the hobbit (which I love, by the way). THIS VERSION OF RETURN OF THE KING SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN MADE! The story is NOT a children's tale! It's just NOT! Too much of the manuscript needed to be changed and toned down in order to make it so. The entire screen adaptation is worthless. The only memorable scene is before the Black Gate with the Mouth of Sauron (which was decently done despite the rest of the 'movie'). There is one reason, and one reason alone to buy this foul, pitiful excuse for a DVD; you already have the The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings animated movies, and you want to have the full tale.

GARBAGE! I SAY! TRASH! YUK, YUK, YUK!

3 out of 5 stars "Beware, the power that was simple now has grown".......2006-07-05

Rankin-Bass' "Return of the King" is by far the most underrated of the six films that have been adapted from J.R.R. Tolkien's works. One has to bear in mind that it was an animated prime-time television special aimed at children, that it was intended to be at least halfway comprehensible to viewers whose only previous Middle-earth knowledge came from the Rankin-Bass "Hobbit", and that the filmmakers were apparently unable to use any material whatsoever from the previous two volumes of Tolkien's trilogy.

Given all those restrictions and obstacles, it's amazing how good the Rankin-Bass RotK is and how much of Tolkien's work it captures. Viewers get to see many elements of the book that were excluded from the Peter Jackson films, from little things like the all-white standard of the Stewards of Gondor to big moments like Sam feeling pity for Gollum on Mount Doom. I also think Rankin-Bass' ending is sadder, and closer to the spirit of Tolkien's ending, than that of Jackson's trilogy.

So I wholeheartedly recommend this film for younger viewers. And as for all you adult Tolkien aficionados who have heard nothing but bad things about this movie: Give it a try; you just might like it!
