From a mischievous monkey to children-turned-dinosaurs, bedtime proves a time of tiredness, tricks, and tirades in this collection of famous bedtime stories. The animated "Goodnight Gorilla" remains true to Peggy Rathman's irresistible artwork and features an adorable monkey who outsmarts the Zookeeper by unlocking all the animals cages and then following him home to bed. The addition of a jazzy "Variations on Brahms Lullaby" and understated narration by Anthony Edwards enhance an already terrific story. "How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight" takes a humorous look at the striking similarities between children's behavior when bedtime arrives and that of roaring dinosaurs and "Happy Birthday, Moon" is a sweet story about a little boy who wants to buy the moon a birthday present. "The Napping House" features still pictures of illustrator Don Wood and the repetitive verse of Audrey Wood depicting a pile-up of creatures on Grandma's bed that ends with the tiniest creature setting off a huge chain reaction. Bonus stories include "The Paperboy," a romantic vision of a day in the life of a Paperboy; "Patrick," a tribute to the restorative power of music; and "The Hat," an exploration of chance and good fortune. A read-along feature is available for all stories. The Scholastic Video Collection has once again succeeded in bringing classic children's literature to life on the television screen. Fantastic!!.......2007-08-09
I loved this story when my ten year old was a baby. Now, my one year old loves to watch this video before bed every night while I tell the story to him. It winds him down just enough to get him ready for bedtime. Great nightime tradition!!
Going ape for this video.......2007-07-22
Our daughter LOVES books and Goodnight Gorilla has been one of her favourites since she was 6 months old. The story is easy to follow and can become more complex as the child matures. My daughter and I found the Scholastic Goodnight Gorilla video at the local library. We watched it a few times and returned it to the library. However, my daughter would go looking for the video. She wanted to see Goodnight Gorilla along with the two other books on video: Happy Birthday Moon and How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight. I highly recommend this video over all others. It is not only pleasing to watch (over and over), but it introduced us to two other great authors: Frank Asch and Jane Yolen. I would always suggest to buy the books first and then buy the video to enhance the experience.
5 stars minus 1 for a single gripe.......2007-04-13
This collection of stories is absolutely wonderful, except for...'How do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight' is unnecessarily scary for little ones. The music is dark and menacing at times, and the dinosaurs are a bit too threatening. The 'demanding a piggyback ride' episode looks like the dinosaur is attacking the mother and she actually screams! My [...] still wants to watch it, but can only tolerate it while clinging to me for reassurance. I would have preferred more whimsical music and childlike dinosaur behavior, but older kids will probably like their dinosaurs with some teeth. That said, it is well done visually and the narration by Jane Yolen is excellent. It's a fun story.
Now that's done, and here are my thoughts on the many many other good things about this DVD:
My son loves every story and asks for each one repeatedly. I can and do watch them over and over again without getting sick of them, and I have my favorites as well (The Hat and Patrick).
Goodnight Gorilla: Actually works better as an animation than a book (just my opinion). Simply charming.
Happy Birthday Moon: Although I don't really love this one, my son really does and that's all that counts after all.
The Napping House: I didn't think my son would like this one, but he loves it. I love it too. Very soothing, simple and sweet.
The Paper Boy: Magical! The animation is beautiful and the musical score soars with grace and feeling. Forest Whittaker's narration is understated and brilliant.
Patrick: Just Music and animation, but a great story full of joy. The music is brilliant and the animation visually exciting. Love it!
The Hat: A wonderful story full of wit and humor. A magical hat, a good man down on his luck, heroic deeds rewarded, and a happy ending. My favorite!
Great video.......2007-04-12
My son really likes to watch this DVD and does get tired when watching the relaxing stories to put him to sleep. Highly recommend.
Favorite books come to life.......2007-02-26
This video is excellent for giving the stories more depth. Especially good for pairing with the literature itself and don't forget to look at the extra bonus stories. I'm a special ed teacher and I find them invaluable. The students ask for them over and over again.

Margaret Wise Brown and Clement Hurd's bestselling children's book headlines this winning 25-minute collection of sleepytime tales from HBO. Susan Sarandon narrates the simple story of a bunny readying for bed. Other top entertainers lend their voices to the tape: Tony Bennett sings the story of "Hit the Road to Dreamland"; Lauryn Hill brings rhythm to "Hush, Little Baby" (the best segment); Billy Crystal lends many voices to Mercer Mayer's "There's a Nightmare in My Closet"; and singers Natalie Cole, Aaron Neville, and Patti LeBelle sing other tales. A dandy video for the youngster, punctuated with "interviews" of real kids answering a host of bedtime questions. --Doug Thomas
Customer Reviews:
Lovely Good Night Moon Segment.......2007-09-13
I have grown to really appreciate this DVD. Initially, I was primarily drawn to Susan Sarandon's reading of Good Night Moon, which is lovely. But we (I, my spouse and our 19-month old) now enjoy -- Braham's Lullably, Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, Tar Beach, and a Nightmare in my Closet. I was concerned that our child would be frightened by the Mercer Nightmare story, but she finds the scene of the Nightmare character crying to be funny (so much for empathy). At this age, she is not interested in hearing the segments with children talking about dreams, so we skip tracks frequently. The kids are well-spoken and an interesting mix of voices but are very New York, as another reviewer commented.
Such a perfect savior when the child won't sleep!.......2007-09-05
This show has been on HBO and we Tivo'd it - our daughter gets to watch it only when she is unable to fall asleep. Works everytime. Very poignant messages, great talented voices throughout and just a nice family DVD - the only one we own!
It's not that good........2007-08-23
I bought this vedio for my toddler son. I do not think he is interested at all. There are too many talks from the kids that he would not even understand but not enough music and pictures to draw his interest.
Doesn't Work For Our House, Might Work For Yours.......2007-08-23
My one year old daughter LOVES the Classical Baby series and I purchased this DVD hoping for something along the same lines - a soothing bedtime type of show.
The stories are great but each segment is prefaced with little kids chattering away. I don't mind the chatter, but I imagine that it would start to grate with repeated viewings. I wish there was a way to just view the stories.
When my daughter sees the other children on TV, she is VERY interested in them. So interested that she sits straight up (almost like she's thinking, "Ooh! Big kids!") and we lose all of the progress we've made toward sleepytime. I'll give this DVD another shot when she's a little older.
All kids are different so maybe this DVD will work at your house!
Wonderful!!.......2007-08-09
I loved this story when my ten year old was a baby, and now I have a one year old that absolutely loves the video version before bed!! It is the perfect wind down from the day for a great bedtime tradition. We watch it every night, and change off every now and then with Goodnight Gorilla, another wonderful bedtime story. My son goes down without a peep after these videos!! Great investment! Great gift for baby showers too!!!

Songs on this DVD: "Dance Myself to Sleep, "Moonshine Song," "If Moon Was Cookie," "Snuffle Lullabye," "Everybody Sleeps," and "Imagination." Running Time approximately 30 minutes

I cannot imagine bedtime without Sleepytime Songs and Stories.......2007-05-30
Although my husband and I always said TV would not play a part in our 19 mos. old son's bedtime routine, we have both come to love this dvd. It's some of Sesame Street's best, including one of my favorites from my childhood, "Everybody Sleeps". We don't use this dvd every night, but it is a sure-fire soother for when our little guy is all wound-up. I cannot reccommend it highly enough, and I only wish we had bought it sooner.
GREAT Sesame Street DVD...Lots of Puppets and Cute Bedtime Scenes..........2007-01-09
My 2 and 3-year old sons love this DVD. Lots of puppets and cute scenes with catchy songs. Great for pre-bedtime. A really cute and calming DVD. We're very glad we purchased this one. You won't be disappointed.
Our favorite Sesame Street dvd.......2006-11-29
We first owned this on video back in about 1996, when our first child was just starting to watch videos. She wore out two or three copies of this video and then once our second child came along, I could no longer find it. Thankfully it came out on dvd in time for baby number three because this is the very best Sesame Street dvd we own. It is soothing and cozy and the stories and songs are classically wonderful. Our favorite is "If Moon Were Cookie" but the whole thing is just great. I love the story about the sun and moon. The dvd is hosted by Big Bird and he is trying to show the viewer ways to fall asleep if they are having trouble sleeping. We still watch this dvd all the time, and the oldest child, the one whose favorite it was ten years ago, still sneaks in now and gets it and sometimes watches it before bedtime, using her sister as an excuse. We love this. It is highly recommended.

Just alright.......2006-02-17
This one was just alright. I think I have seen this one on HBO. The scenes were pretty good. Was good quailty, picture and sound. Not real sure if it was worth the money. Overall it was alright.
Great stories. Well, not really, but the sex is great........2005-05-03
This appears to be a rerelease of the A side of the double feature "Bedtime Stories/Diary of Seduction" DVD. It sounds like it has the same content, so I can address that in this review.
"Bedtime Stories" was a late night cable TV series. This DVD contains three episodes: "Blind Fold", "First Love", and "The Rival". The stories all center around a brothel run by Kim Dawson. Women come to her to get help for problems with their sex life. It's almost identical to the types of stories contained in Mainline's "Secrets of the Kama Sutra" releases and is produced by the same people responsible for those stories. And like "Secrets", the stories aren't really that interesting, but deliver plenty of well done sex scenes.
There are a total of eleven sex scenes. Five are boy/girl. Two are boy/girl, with another girl watching and providing her own entertainment. One is boy/girl/girl. One is girl solo. Two are girl/girl. The women are beautiful and include several softcore A listers: Kim Dawson, Gabriella Hall, Flower, Taimie Hannum, and Samantha Phillips.
As I stated above, this is a rerelease, and a higher priced one at that. In addition, the original release wasn't just the "Bedtime Stories" episodes. There was also a movie (although not a very good one) on the B side. There may be some copies of the original release still available at the original, lower price.
However, even at the new price, I still recommend this one.

Can't believe my eyes!.......2007-08-22
If Kim Dawson is in it, how can it be anything but great I thought-WRONG! She is usually gorgeous, and passionate, but in this all the scenes are sterile, dispassionate, uninspiring and, well, borrrring! Don't waste the money. Kim, next time, make sure the director is up to your usual high standards. How anyone can make a film with the gorgeous Kim Dawson and make it boring is a rare and uncomely and dubious distinction. Bytheway, if the girl on the cover is in the film I missed her.
Good stuff! Three more bedtime stories episodes........2005-11-09
This is volume two of the Bedtime Stories erotic series. Kim Dawson runs a brothel that caters exclusively to fulfilling the erotic fantasies of women. Like volume one, this DVD contains three episodes. Another Woman: Nikki Fritz wants to see her husband have sex with another woman. Strangers: Susan Featherly wants to have sex with a complete stranger. No Names, Please: Monique Jeanette wants to have a relationship with a man that is just sex, nothing more. I didn't find any of the stories at all interesting, but the sex was great.
There are eleven sex scenes. All are boy/girl and all are very good. The women are attractive and hot. Both Nikki and Monique are Stacked, with a capital S. This was filmed when Nikki was still in top physical shape and all her scenes will leave your jaw hanging open. In addition to the women I've already mentioned, Tess Broussard is also in the cast.
Audio and video quality are good. This is very recommended.

Customer Reviews:
Care Bears!!!!.......2006-09-18
Care Bears was on the television when I was a little girl. *sigh* Such fond memories! Just to let you know this is made by DIC. They are know to have bad production shows and movies. The color and quality of the DVD isn't that good. The voices are just weird! It doesn't sound "cartoony" if you ask me. Still good none the less.
Great Value for Care Bears Watchers.......2005-10-29
These original episodes from the TV series are pretty much the same as I remembered them (I was a teen when they came out): juvenile, predictable, and badly animated (think Thundercats - The Old Man and the Lighthouse on this disc is actually even more poorly animated than the others). I bought this disc and The Last Laugh for my son when he was about 3 and he loved it. He would watch them over and over glued to the television, so they were a perfect baby sitter when necessary. His favorite episode on this disc was the Cloud Worm. Compared with the 3-episode discs that his grandma bought him (Tenderheart Tales & Land of Enchantment), the 7-episode discs are definitely a better value and overlap significantly (only one episode was different on the 3-episode DVDs). Compared with the original Care Bears movie, the animation is a little choppy. However, these original TV episodes were much better and got watched a lot more (the movie is pretty scary).
Old animation, terrible voice cast, but still cute.......2005-10-23
I was quite disappointed with this video. I didn't like the way it was produced. The "kids" in all episodes had weird grown-up voices, and a few of the Care Bears sounded very strange and annoying (like Bedtime Bear, Grumpy Bear, even Champ Bear. And oh, let's not forget Gentle Heart Lamb's shee-ee-ee-py voice!). Also, most scenes could have been improved with more and better background music.
We bought this video along with the 3 others from the Animation Station series, which are: "The Last Laugh," "Care Bears To The Rescue," and "Daydreams." Between the 4 of them, there is a total of 22 episodes. These episodes are also featured in the 3-episode DVDs produced by Sterling:
(In random order)
1. Forever Friends
2. Celebration
3. Dreamland
4. Land of Enchantment
5. Fun in the Sun
6. Starry Skies
7. Tenderheart Tales
DIC also came up with a DVD 3-pack which covers 20 of these episodes.
Instead of spending extra money on all 7 DVDs or the 3-pack set, we decided to get the VHS version...it was a lot cheaper (got all 4 videos brand new on ebay for only $12 plus shipping), and we still get to watch all 22 episodes produced by DIC/Sterling/UAV. The video quality seems okay...it's certainly sufficient for occasional viewings by a 4-year-old. My daughter doesn't seem to mind the awful voices (although she'd sometimes comment on how "weird" someone sounds).
As one would expect, yes, there are moral lessons on caring, sharing, being nice, etc... and the bad guys are tolerable enough... Overall, this is still a cute 80's cartoon series for all ages.
The voices are strange.......2005-03-08
I was a fan of the care bears "way back when" so it was interesting for me to watch this video with my 7 year old. He didn't seem very interested and I can understand why. The voices of the characters don't sound like I remember and in the case of a couple of the bears, slightly scary. I think this would be more for the pre-school set than school age children.
entertaining and nostalgic.......2004-05-04
Watching this really takes me back! The origional theme song! There is no beastly, noheart, or shrieky here, but the the bears are there.
Drab city is one of my favorites.
Customer Reviews:
Softcore romance.......2007-06-15
This was a pretty mild example of late-night, softcore porn with more involved stories. It has kind of a cute premise; Marilyn Chambers invites women over to try on lingerie. Naturally, the conversation turns to sexual conquests of the past, with flashbacks to those conquests. The sex is fairly tame, and the acting poor, but the women are attractive, albeit a bit older and softer than usual. Overall, some nice visuals, and the story elements might appeal more to women than most softcore stuff, but even so the stories are really kind of lame, and the character build-up nearly nonexistant. Another tribute to Marilyn Chambers isn't a bad thing, though, just as long as you know what you're getting into.

Lullaby & Goodnight portrays bedtime as it should be: a time of togetherness, soothing rituals, and song. A multiethnic group of mothers, Walter the radio (Tim Conway), Rosebud the talking flower (Caroline Rhea), and a host of animated friends create an ideal bedtime routine for several children. Songs like "This Is the Way We Wash" and "Pajamas" accompany footage of the children getting ready for bed. Animated segments include story time with "Winken, Blinken, and Nod" and favorite lullabies like "Toora, Loora, Loora" and "Brahms's Lullaby." Mommy and Me cofounder Dr. Cindy Nurik follows the presentation with advice about establishing bedtime routines. While this series will not put a child to sleep, it offers a nice selection of lullabies, poems, and stories appropriate for bedtime. (Intended for children ages birth to 5 years old and their parents.) --Tami Horiuchi

My Daughter Loves This.......2006-07-21
We tuck in with this every night! She loves it. I only hope they will make another one for nighttime so I can get some variety.
My 2-year-old really likes it. . . .......2006-06-13
He enjoys all the songs and images. We have him brush his teeth to the toothbrushing part, and he is learning to sing along with the lullabies. I wouldn't consider that this video is supposed to PUT HIM TO SLEEP, but it does put him in a bedtime frame of mind, and I use the lullabies ("Pretty Little Horses" is his favorite) when I do rock him to sleep after we watch.
I myself think it's sweet. Yeah, some parts are a bit over the top (e.g. Rosebud is quite annoying). The black mom and the curly haired mom aren't THAT over the top compared to what's seen in many other children's videos--I think they're both sweet and it's obvious they enjoy being with their kids. The other mom (older, short haired mom of 2) is a little strange--she is so sedate compared to the other two moms, and she LOOKS and SOUNDS like an exhausted mom of a relatively new baby, LOL! Don't know why they didn't let her sing her own lullaby as the other 2 moms did--when she gets to sing a few snatches she has quite a nice voice.
The only part I really don't like is the cartoon "snoring" sequence, LOL! And I would agree that if you're trying to get your child in a quiet mood, Rosebud yelling "Camptown Races" could DEFINITELY break the spell.
One strange thing--the song subtitles are triggered by the "ANGLE" feature on my DVD, not the "SUBTITLE" feature! I've never had that happen before!
Overall, my little one requests the "lullaby show" and he and I both like it! It creates a nice little bedtime routine--wash, toothbrush, story, lullabies--and shows nice, happy interactions between moms and their obviously loved little ones.
I never thought of "You Are So Beautiful to Me" as a lullaby or a love song to a child--but it is perfect and I sing it to my little one now.
Creepy and annoying!.......2003-06-06
My daughter, who just turned two, has never liked this DVD, and neither do I. It scares her-especially the creepy flower played by Caroline Rhea. The moms are annoying, the songs are unimaginative, and it just drags on and on. The worst part is that, everytime the DVD almost succeeds in putting a child to sleep, it screams them back to consciousness! It does this twice, after nice, quiet parts: my least favorite is after the singing of the lullabies, when Caroline Rhea suddenly starts screaming out "CAMPTOWN RACETRACK FIVE MILES LONG, DOO DAH, DOO DAH"!
Homestly, don't waste your money, especially if you're wanting to use it at bedtime. It's annoying, ineffective, and just downright "weird", for lack of a better word!
13 month old twins are learning to brush their teeth!.......2003-01-30
My boy/girl 13 month old toddlers find this show fascinating. They are learning to brush their teeth and wash their face before bed. They listen to the story and love the music. Best of all, they are ready for bed when we are through!
Don't waste your money............2002-12-03
Terrible DVD. Child has no interest. Wish I had not wasted my money....
