Hey Abbott!.......2007-09-02
Abbott and Costello are the best comedy duo, ever. This collection has some of their funnier movies as well as some of their "quieter" ones. Family fun for everyone. It's pure comedy and has non of that "blue" that's so popular with people today. If you want "funny", this is it! Enjoy!
Great Movies!!!.......2007-08-23
Great movies that my kids love. I had forgotten how funny Abbot & Costello are. Highly recommended.
Classic.......2007-08-11
Two DVD's, 8 films. Picture and film quality is as good as technology can make something this old. The balance between the films is uneven, but I guess every movie can't be a gem. A little pricey for what you get, actually. I remember watching these movies as a kid and being absolutely thrilled with them. Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein and Abbott and Costello Meet the Killer will have you laughing in the aisles. The other movies have their moments, but don't expect more than an occasional chuckle.
Great classic comedy!.......2007-06-27
I used to watch these guys every Sunday morning when I was a kid. When I seen they finally came onto DVD and especially 8 episodes per volume, you just can't go wrong for the price. In my opinion, they were the best comedy duo there ever was. Some of their best movies exist within this volume including my favorite, Abbott & Costello meet Frankenstein. I ordered via standard shipping and received them within a weeks time, packaged nicely, and in great condition. If you love classic, clean comedy, then this is for you.

This 1956 pop adaptation of Shakespeare's The Tempest is one of the best, most influential science fiction movies ever made. Its space explorers are the models for the crew of Star Trek's Enterprise, and the film's robot is clearly the prototype for Robby in Lost in Space. Walter Pidgeon is the Prospero figure, presiding over a paradisiacal world with his lovely young daughter and their servile droid. When the crew of a spaceship lands on the planet, they become aware of a sinister invisible force that threatens to destroy them. Great special effects and a bizarre electronic score help make this movie as fresh, imaginative, and fun as it was when first released. --Amazon.com
On the DVDs
The colorfully designed 2-disc 50th Anniversary Edition of Forbidden Planet (also available in a collector's box) comes in a slip-covered fold-out case accompanied by a pocket of 17 miniature lobby card reproductions (eight for Forbidden Planet, nine for the 1957 companion movie The Invisible Boy). On Disc 1, Forbidden Planet is presented with a new digital transfer from restored picture and audio elements, with soundtrack remastered in Dolby Digital 5.1, offering considerable improvement over the film's previous DVD release. A selection of deleted scenes were taken from a faded and scratchy 16-millimeter "work print" that had originally been viewed by composers Louis and Bebe Barron as they were creating the film's unique electronic score; they consist of full or partial scenes cut from the final film-- mostly for good reason, but collectors (and those who first saw this rare material on the original Criterion Collection laserdisc) will welcome their inclusion here. The "lost footage" is crude special-effects test footage, primarily of interest to sci-fi historians and aficionados. Given the fact that the original "Robby the Robot" cost over $100,000 to build in 1955, it's easy to see why MGM wanted to get their money's worth: An excerpt from the 1950s TV series "MGM Parade" shows Forbidden Planet star Walter Pigeon appearing briefly with Robby, and the popular robot gets even more attention as a guest star in "The Robot Client," an episode of the Thin Man TV series (starring Peter Lawford and Phyllis Kirk) that originally aired on Feb. 28, 1958. Disc 1 also includes a gallery of seven science-fiction movie trailers dating from 1953 (The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms) to 1960's The Time Machine.
Disc 2 begins with 1957's The Invisible Boy, a still-enjoyable B-movie that served as Robby's post-Forbidden Planet showcase. Here, filmdom's favorite automaton plays sidekick to a young boy (Richard Eyer) who turns invisible when he gets caught up in a super-computer's scheme of global domination. Also included are three documentaries, ranging from very good to excellent: In addition to reuniting the surviving cast members of the '56 classic (including Leslie Nielsen, Anne Francis, Richard Anderson, Warren Stevens, and Earl Holliman), "Amazing! Exploring the Far Reaches of Forbidden Planet" is an appreciative tribute to Forbidden Planet with some of Hollywood's foremost sci-fi fans including special effects masters Dennis Muren and Phil Tippett, SF movie expert Bill Warren, and others. "Robby the Robot: Engineering a Sci-Fi Icon" is a featurette about the robot's design, creation and pop-cultural history, featuring original "Robby" designer Robert Kinoshita, Bill Malone (current owner of the original Robby), and Fred "The Robot Man" Barton, a lifelong robot fanatic who now sells fully authorized, full-scale replicas of Robby for sci-fi fans with deep pockets. Closing out disc 2 is "Watch the Skies!: Science Fiction, the 1950s and Us," a 2005 documentary from Turner Classic Movies, written and directed by Time magazine critic Richard Schickel. It's a thoroughly comprehensive survey of '50s sci-fi and its influence on the next generation of film directors, including engaging interviews with George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, John Carpenter, Ridley Scott and James Cameron. --Jeff Shannon
Description
A dutiful robot named Robby speaks 188 languages. An underground lair offers evidence of an advanced civilization. But among Altair-4's many wonders, none is greater or more deadly than the human mind. Forbidden Planet is the granddaddy of tomorrow, a pioneering work whose ideas and style would be reverse-engineered into many cinematic space voyages to come. Leslie Nielsen plays the commander who brings his spacecruiser crew to the green-skied world that's home to Dr. Morbius (Walter Pidgeon), his daughter (Anne Francis)...and to a mysterious terror. Featuring sets of extraordinary scale and the first all-electronic musical soundscape in film history, Forbidden Planet is in a movie orbit all its own.

What can I say? Words just do not do HD DVD justice; the picture is stunning and brilliant. Just like the name says the look and sound of perfect. I am impressed.
Very Cool .......2007-08-23
Was an awesome purchase. I love the movie and the extras make it worth buying. It would have been better if it was $10 cheaper.
A Fifties Sci-Fi Classic.......2007-08-11
I love it: great cast, great sets, great colour, cod-Shakespeare story spin-off (the Tempest), invisible monsters, flying saucers, robots, unique soundtrack. This really is a must in any sci-fi collection. It's not erudite, or genre making, but just a great piece of entertainment and escapism.
When I bought mine, there was no European version (region 2) available, but the region 1 disc is nice (if you have a multi-region player) as it is double-sided with widescreen (16:9) on one side and academy ratio (TV 4:3) on the other.
A true Classic.......2007-07-30
I got this dc set for my husband's birthady as it is his favorite movie of all time. He loves having it in CD now and especially likes the special 2 disc edition.
Classic Pulp Sci-Fi.......2007-07-30
Forbidden planet is an old science fiction film about a spaceship crew with orders to investigate the disappearence of settlers from one of the colonies. Once on planet they meet a sinister genius who, along with his beautiful daughter is the sole survivor of the previous expedition.
This was an okay film with a fairly predictable plotline and an ending I found annoying. Fans of classic sci-fi will enjoy the old-fashioned special effects. I liked the cook character and the robot Robbie but found the captain to be a bit of a boor and Alta to be kinda creepy. She was just WAY too naive for my comfort level.
3 stars, worth a watch but nothing to shout about.

Marvel Comics' first family of superherodom, the Fantastic Four, hits the big screen in a light-hearted and funny adventure. It begins when down-on-his-luck genius Reed Richards (Ioan Gruffudd, Horatio Hornblower) has to enlist the financial and intellectual help from former schoolmate and rival Victor Von Doom (Julian McMahon, Nip/Tuck) in order to pursue outer-space research into human DNA. Also on the trip are Reed's best friend, Ben Grimm (Michael Chiklis, The Shield); his former lover, Sue Storm (Jessica Alba, Dark Angel, Sin City), who's now Doom's employee and love interest; and her hotshot-pilot brother, Johnny Storm (Chris Evans, Cellular). Things don't go as planned, of course, and the quartet becomes blessed--or is it cursed?--with superhuman powers: flexibility, brute strength, invisibility and projecting force fields, and bursting into flame. Meanwhile, Doom himself is undergoing a transformation.
Among the many entries in the comic-book-movie frenzy, Fantastic Four is refreshing because it doesn't take itself too seriously. Characterization isn't too deep, and the action is a bit sparse until the final reel (like most "first" superhero movies, it has to go through the "how did we get these powers and what we will do with them" churn). But it's a good-looking cast, and original comic-book cocreator Stan Lee makes his most significant Marvel-movie cameo yet, in a speaking role as the FF's steadfast postal carrier, Willie Lumpkin. Newcomers to superhero movies might find the idea of a family with flexibility, strength, invisibility, and force fields a retread of The Incredibles, but Pixar's animated film was very much a tribute to the FF and other heroes of the last 40 years. The irony is that while Fantastic Four is an enjoyable B-grade movie, it's the tribute, The Incredibles, that turned out to be a film for the ages. --David Horiuchi

After exposure to cosmic radiation, four astronauts become the most remarkable, if dysfunctional, superheroes of all time. Unfortunately, the mission's sponsor has also been transformed ? into the world's most lethal supervillain ? setting the stage for a confrontation of epic proportions. Packed with nonstop action, big laughs and awesome special effects, Fantastic 4 is "powerful fun" (The Baltimore Sun) from start to finish!
Customer Reviews:
awful.......2007-09-15
This movie highly disappointed me. The second one was a lot better. This movie had dumb jokes thrown in and a lot of stupid lines. The visual affects were pretty good which made me give this 2 stars. Worth a rent, that's all.
FANTASTIC FILM!.......2007-09-01
I'll admit that when I first watched this movie, I was rather sceptical and even somewhat cynical. I'd heard a lot of the rumblings that it wasn't "epic" enough and that they'd made too many changes, etc. However, when I sat down to watch this, it really won me over. Sure it's not the big action/effects blockbuster that it could have been, but that is really where it succeeds. If it had been made in that way, it would've been a lesser film. Allow me to explain. This film really captures the characters (their personalities, quirks and tensions) remarkably well. The emphasis IS on the characters. Not the effects or the action or the spectacle. THE CHARACTERS. The casting here is near-perfect. Jessica Alba probably isn't the right choice for the role, however, that said, she really does radiate a definite charm that won me over. Plus, Reed may not have noticed it (or at least he wasn't admitting it), she does look HOT in that outfit! Julian McMahon makes Doom his own, which more than makes up for the changes they made to his character. Michael Chiklis is perfect as Ben. But the real casting coup here, in my opinion, is Ioan Gruffudd. He is nothing short of perfect as Reed. Intelligent without being boring, confident enough to really convince as team leader. Tim Story really deserves way more credit than he received for making such a fine film. Pure entertainment from start to finish. And you can't ask for more than that.
And to all those who dismiss this DVD version of FF, both the JACK KIRBY: STORYTELLER and THE WORLD'S GREATEST COMIC MAGAZINE documentaries are worth it alone to buy this version. They are hands down some of the best documentaries I have seen regarding comics.
If you have any doubts whatsoever about whether it is worth the cost, please let me persuade you to buy it and buy it now! You won't be sorry!
A good example of poor editing.......2007-08-14
The Fantastic Four Extended Cut is a good example of how not to edit a movie. Many of the scenes put back in are either completely unnecessary, repetitive, or just plain silly (such as the Wolverine impersonation scene which is all three). As a result, the middle section of the movie now seriously drags. I think I prefer the original edit to this version, though there were several positive additions (sadly ruined but those that were not).
My recommendation would be that if you already have the original don't bother with this one. If you don't have the original, get this version because the original edit is on it too so you can have both versions, and if you enjoy special features there's a second disc full of them.
Lame.......2007-08-11
The story of 4 astronauts who get caught in a solar storm and survive, but with their DNA severely altered. They develop superpowers and become the Fantastic Four. I didn't read the comic books so I don't care how it stacks up to them. The movie taken by itself is pretty bad. There is very little set-up to explain who everyone is and what exactly they're doing in space. In fact, throughout the entire movie there is little character development. The only person who actually acts in the film is Michael Chiklis as The Thing. Everyone else give awful performances, especially Jessica Alba. They're not helped by the atrocious dialog they have to say. The script must have taken about 20 minutes to write. I gave it 2 stars because I've seen worse movies and there are a few good effects sequences, especially at the end.
MST3K Fans Rejoice -- Rifftrax . com Is Here!.......2007-08-09
Most film adaptations of comic books skimp on the amount of fantastic-ness, offering at best one or perhaps two units of fantastic-osity. Not Fantastic Four! It goes the extra mile by providing THREE (3) fantastic characters (plus a bonus character who's not so much fantastic as he is a fantastic irritant, in the spirit of battery acid on the skin or airplane glue in the eyes.) Plus, Fantastic Four gives you a villain who looks and acts as though he were carved out of large log of congealed tallow! And while other movies might cast Jessica Alba in a lead role and then task her with giving a performance, Fantastic Four plays to her strengths by avoiding any performance at all and instead merely parades her around in a tighter-than-skin Spandex suit.
Featuring eye-popping special effects and a collection of words written down and then spoken by the actors (it would be a wild exaggeration to refer to it as a "script"), Fantastic Four gets a fantastic four star rating* from Mike and expert riffer Kevin Murphy.
*Out of ten possible.

Rambo meets Alien in this terrific science-fiction thriller from 1987, directed by John McTiernan just a year before Die Hard made him Hollywood's most sought-after director of action-packed blockbusters. Arnold Schwarzenegger leads an elite squad of U.S. Army commandos to a remote region of South American jungle, where they've been assigned to search for South American officials who've been kidnapped by terrorists. Instead they find a bunch of skinned corpses hanging from the trees and realize that they're now facing a mysterious and much deadlier threat. As the squad is picked off one by one, Arnold finds himself pitted against a hideous alien creature that's heavily armed and wearing a spacesuit enabling the creature to render itself invisible. The title says it all in describing the relentless, escalating action that follows, maintained by McTiernan with an abundance of visual flair. The film's special effects are still impressive, and stunning locations in the Mexican jungles create a combined atmosphere of verdant beauty and imminent danger. The plot doesn't hold up to much scrutiny, but the movie's so exciting and tightly paced that its weaknesses seem irrelevant. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:
Classic.......2007-09-17
One of the most memorable aliens of the 80's, or for the past 3 decades for that matter, is the one in Predator. The reason is obvious. It's ugly and it hunts humans for fun in the jungle. Unique plot, superb fighting scenes, sheer brutality, and all the testorone one hopes to see in this type of flick.
There's only one man who can take on Predator: The Govonator.......2007-09-07
We, Sid the Elf, wanted a real nice B to kick the weekend off perfectly, so we picked up Predator. Well, Sid was stunned. Predator was a perfectly done action flick. Don't take us wrong, anytime Arnold is teamed with Jesse the body Ventura, Apollo Creed, and the immortal Chink Webber from Lockup the B will be flowing like wine. There was an ample ammount of explosions, totally awsome guns, and the toughest lines around.(We're not even going to mention anymore that anytime Arnold talks the possibility for hillarity is there) With that said, Predator was the perfect guy movie, the only thing that was missing was smokin hot chicks. Yeah awsome. But, we found ourselves saying no less than 10 times during the screening, "This movie is killer!" or something comperable.
So, Sid would have to say, if you're looking for a B action to laugh at stay away from Predator. However, if you want to get totally pumped and watch an all-time killer action flick, Predator is your Vehicle baby.
Just as good tweny years later........2007-09-05
After twenty years this is still one of the quintessential action movies. Better than it's sequel and far, far superior to AVP. I place it right next to Aliens as one of the best sci-fi movies ever. With few exceptions the FX are on par with those seen in today's films. The casting is nearly flawless, I not talking about great actors here, what I mean is they are perfectly cast in these roles. Carl Weathers, Jesse Ventura, and Sonny Landham really make you believe in these guys. Sure they're over the top and comic book like with bulging muscles but the way they are portrayed makes you actually give a damn about what happens to them. Even thought Arnold wins in the end it costs him his entire team to achieve victory, if you can call it that.
The DVD itself has a lot of great behind the scenes stuff. The transfer of the movie could have been better but it is twenty years old so I can't expect it to look perfect. Great film.
MST3K Fans Rejoice -- Rifftrax is Here!.......2007-08-24
Something lurks in the dense jungle. Something horrible and cruel, a creature from beyond our world. His name is Arnold Schwarzenegger. He lurks next to another unspeakable creature named Jesse Ventura. And another, goes by the handle Carl Weathers. Who himself lurks next to a monstrous slab of flesh known as Bill Duke. Together, they face down a creature who, quite understandably, hunts them for their skulls, hoping to fetch a fair price for them at the many Open Skull Markets that dot the galaxy. (If you haven't been to one, you must go. Take the kids, because the markets are very family friendly and they have these great Hawaiian Ice stands. And, of course, there's the skulls.)
Predator unseals a whole tin of whoop-bottom, trotting out cliches like so many, well, like so many boiled human skulls at the terrific Open Skull Market on Nespus VIII (honestly, I know I sound like I'm raving, but it really is just a great way to spend a Saturday, and it's fairly reasonable, too.)
Finally, a good use for your Predator DVD that isn't "propping up that one corner of the entertainment stand, the one whose castor you snapped off when you were moving out of that place on Spring Street because you just couldn't hack sharing a place with Beezer anymore, on account of his socks."
One of the Best Movies Ever Made!.......2007-08-20
Almost everyone has seen or herd of the movie Predator, and if you haven't then you must be living under a rock. This movie is assume, I watch like every time it is ever on TV! A must have for any Arnold Schwarzenegger fan! Get this two disc collectors edition!

First released in France, Luc Besson's Arthur and the Invisibles is a touching computer animated adventure that makes up in look and in character for what it lacks in narrative originality. As a direct hybrid of Excalibur and A Bug's Life, Arthur stars a heroic ten year-old, Arthur (Freddie Highmore), who draws a sword from a stone to fight a miniature battle in the garden before finding treasure valuable enough to save his grandfather's farm from purchase by developers. Arthur's grandfather, Archibald, having long ago discovered the miniscule world of Minimoys, garden gnome-like elves that lived in his yard, shrunk himself in order to hunt elusive rubies that were hidden in their evil Mecropolis, headed by Maltazard (David Bowie). Now Arthur must assist the benevolent Minimoy clan, ruled by The King (Robert De Niro) and Princess Selenia (Madonna), in challenging Maltazard for possession of the jewels. Shots taking the viewer down through grass blades into the microscopic, yet gigantic yard world readjust one's sense of size, as do scenes, for example, in which a small, elven Arthur fights mosquitoes with catapulted tomatoes. Meanwhile, live action scenes of Arthur's worried grandmother (Mia Farrow) provide respite from a completely computerized world. Bowie, as he did in Legend, steals the show, bringing to life his Darth Vader-like character who chose evil over good in a past adventure. Corny one-liners sometimes spoil the mood, but overall the film's thematic blend of fantasy and environmentalism, like Princess Mononoke, will delight children with its positive message. --Trinie Dalton

Kid safe, with surprising star power.......2007-08-31
"Arthur" is cute bit of fluffy adventure, not at all what I expected from the director of The Fifth Element (Remastered) [Blu-ray] and Angel-A. The plot is simple enough: Arthur has an amazing adventure in an enchanted place - he becomes a hero there, then returns to the everyday world and becomes a hero again. That much is great escapist fantasy.
The format is a little surprising, though. The movie starts with live actors, switches to some very good animation through the largest part of the movie, then ends with the live actors - but even there, Besson adds some fun fantasy elements.
There are lots of familiar pieces here: the curvy-but-chaste princess (this is a kids' movie after all) with an attitude, geeky sidekick, quest for treasure, a little safe romance, and even a sword in a stone. Despite that checklist of standard features, this avoids being completely formulaic. Most adults wouldn't sit through it on their own, but kids need movies too.

Surprisingly good, better than expected.......2007-08-08
I did not have anything to do... I went to the movies and decided to give a chance to Arthur and the Minimoys and surprise!!! the movie was really good!!! full of beautiful messages that are sent in a subtle way once in a while. The full Cast delivers a different gamma of good acting, but the ones that steal the show are Mia Farrow followed by the super star Freddie Highmore. The story is touchy and charming!!! Beautifully directed, you can't ask for more, it's a must see...
This is such a great movie!.......2007-08-08
I was very intrigued and impressed with this movie. It brings the best of both worlds to the big screen, animation and real life. The characters are so interesting.
great.......2007-08-03
I love the movie I ordered for my doughter and my husband and I ended up watching it, very cute story, I do recomend it
I liked it more then the books.......2007-07-20
Hi well to start this was a good movie! I loved it it was fast and fun and it didn't have as many things as the books but they were kinda slow. I like it a lot. Oh yeah it would be five stars but their lips didn't really match their words which annoyed me a little. But not much else to say hope this was helpful brooke

--David Horiuchi! I>

Description
A dutiful robot named Robby speaks 188 languages. An underground lair provides astonishing evidence of a populace a million years more advanced than Earthlings. There are many wonders on Altair-4, but none is greater or more deadly than the human mind. Forbidden Planet is the granddaddy of tomorrow, a pioneering work whose ideas and style would be reverse-engineered into many cinematic space voyages to come. Leslie Nielsen portrays the commander who brings his spacecruiser crew to the green-skied Altair-4 world that's home to Dr. Morbius (Walter Pidgeon), his daughter (Anne Francis), the remarkable Robby...and to a mysterious terror.

The heroes of 1899 are brought to life with the help of some expensive special effects in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. From the pages of Victorian literature come Captain Nemo, Dr. Jekyll (and his alter ego Mr. Hyde), Dorian Gray, Tom Sawyer, an Invisible Man, Mina Harker (from Dracula), and the hunter Allan Quatermain (Sean Connery), all brought together to combat an evil megalomaniac out to conquer the world. Hardly an original plot, but perhaps that's fitting for a movie sewn together like Frankenstein's monster. The movie rushes from one frenetic battle to another, replacing sense with spectacle--Nemo's submarine rising from the water, a warehouse full of zeppelins bursting into flame, Venice collapsing into its own canals; flashy, dumb, and completely incoherent. Fans of the original comic book will be disappointed. Also featuring Peta Wilson, Shane West, Stuart Townsend, Richard Roxburgh, and Jason Flemyng. --Bret Fetzer
Description
A hunter, a scientist, a vampire, an invisible man, an immortal, a spy, a beast...when a masked madman known as "The Fantom" threatens to launch global Armageddon, legendary adventurer Allan Quatermain (Sean Connery) commands a legion of superheroes, the likes of which mankind has never seen.
Now, despite fighting their own personal demons - and each other - they mush join forces to save the world. Sean Connery leads a stellar cast in this breathtaking, "thrill-a-minute" (Jeffrey Lyons, NBC-TV) extravaganza loaded with "eye-popping effects and amazing action!" (Bill Bregoli, Westwood One)
Customer Reviews:
A movie worth watching!.......2007-09-16
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen brings to the screen the story of an unlikely group of people that have banded together in order to put an end to a criminal mind's schemes bent on plunging the world in total war so that he may profit from increased arms sales.
The year is 1899 and the British government has called upon hunter Allan Quatermain to join a band of 19th century superheroes in preventing the Fantom from destroying the world. The Fantom, however, begs to differ...
There are hints of James Bond, Dracula, Van Helsing, and Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde among others so the movie falls into the action/adventure/horror type of category.
Sean Connery and the rest of the cast have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are outstanding to say the least! All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100% and it really shows (the chemistry is AMAZING)! Very well written and very well presented, the movie is without a doubt guaranteed to provide more than just a few thrills.
The setting, the plot, the special effects (!), the music, and the costumes are all good.
The only major setback was in relation to Tom Sawyer (?), who seemed totally out of place among the rest, and who probably was incorporated for the sake of including an American hero.
In short, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is a movie definitely worth watching and one to seriously consider adding to your movie collection.
BRING ON THE SEQUEL!
A double "O" stinker.......2007-09-09
This film has it all. A garbage storyline, trash special computer effects
and an ANCIENT 007 brought out of the crypt to play, of all people, a decrepit Allan Quartermain !! Then they have a Dracula type ( female ) to be a blood sucking VanHelsing !! Sorry folks, but, this shows how hard up Holyweed is for plots and talent. After seeing this I wish I had that 2 hours of my life back. Connery should have reired 30 years ago. I guess he needs the money. This pile of crap has to be in be top 3 of the worst films I ever saw. Really. Don't do it for your own sake.
Delightful Movie.......2007-09-05
This is a delight to watch, although nowhere near as good as expected. It features the likeness of a number of comic characters.
The DVD features two commentary tracks, one with the producers and actors, and a second with the visual effects team. It also includes a "Making Of" documentary, and number (12) of deleted scenes. A good movie despite my feeling that it could've been better.
It gets a solid recommendation.
Dull film, huge disappointment.......2007-08-27
I haven't read the well regarded comic book (er, sorry, graphic novel), but this movie is terribly dull. The idea of taking well known characters from the Victorian Era's popular literature (Allan Quartermain, Captain Nemo, Tom Sawyer, Dr. Jekyll, Dorian Gray, The Invisible Man from the novel by H.G. Wells, Mina Harker from Dracula) and rethink them as superheroes sounds odd but interesting. And if such endeavor would make some young people read the original books, one can certainly sympathize with that. But this film is dull. The action scenes are uninspired. And one wonders if the filmmakers even read the original material: here Dorian Gray has more lives than Terminator, Verne's Captain Nemo looks more like Sandokan, Jekyll is inspired more by the incredible Hulk than by the character of Robert Louis Stevenson's novel, Tom Saywer is a hothead cowboy rather than Mark Twain's country boy, etc. There are fine actors here (Sean Connery, for one) but they look embarrassed here, as well as they should be. Even the retro Victorian look seems uninspired. Overall, a huge disappointment.
Not extraordinary, but very good.......2007-08-01
I really like this movie! The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is a very fresh twist on fantasy with a superb cast and well done action sequences. The special effects are good enough, though not the film's strong point. This is a movie to be enjoyed for its entertainment value and not to be over-analyzed based on the graphic novel or other literature. A very good movie from start to finish.
