4 out of 5 stars Much better than Season 2.......2007-09-16

I have watched Desperate Housewives from the beginning. I have to say that I was hooked from the first episode of the first season. However, in Season 2, I felt as though the series got too dark and almost too campy to be watched. However, this season, Season 3, returned to the camp without the creepy. Although there were a few misses, like the pedophile on the street - for the most part, Season 3 was a wonderful season filled with lots of twists and turns but still never veering into the completely inane. I enjoyed this set of DVDs and would recommend them to anyone looking to while away a few hours while watching a beautifully produced show.

4 out of 5 stars Good guilty pleasure TV.......2007-09-13

Part of the show's success came from the fact that a lot of people can relate to a lot of the women on Wisteria Lane. From the mother struggling to make ends meet with maybe a bit too many kids to the one obsessed with image and perfectness to the misunderstand promiscuous neighbour, it seems kind of strange that men can find as much to like as the women do. Sure it helps the women are attractive and the season has enough intrigue, drama and humor to keep you coming back whether you're a guy or a girl.

On Susan's story, Mike has been put into a coma after being run over by Orson, Bree's new man. Susan meets Ian in the hospital and finds herself drawn into him while waiting for Mike to wake up. As for Bree, Orson's former wife Alma is missing and blame is put on Orson with Bree skeptical about who Orson really is. The divorce between Carlos and Gabby is nearly finalized and the 2 come to blows and trying to find other relationships including Edie for the former and a mayoral candidate for the latter. Meanwhile, Lynette deals with the new woman in her life, namely Nora who had a child with Tom before he met Lynette and Tom tries to get his dream, a pizzeria, off the ground.

Despite the fact it wasn't a nicely-praised season, I barely watched season 2. I kind of lost interest in the show or started to watch others so I just never watched. Season 3 has been seen as a return-to-form and while it doesn't really match the first season's brilliance, it still is a great watch. From the plot twists to cliffhangers to the comedic moments (Susan's overreaction to possible wedding cakes for one) are just as good as the first year. The show only slows down when Bree leaves on vacation - which was to tie into Marcia Cross' pregnancy - and the show just doesn't really intrigue anymore. Sure other storylines come to the forefront but you feel something's missing.

One of the show's strength was always its writing which always managed to blend the more outrageous comedic elements with character drama (the big one being the episode "Bang") and have it all fit together. From the playful narration of Mary Alice to the fights characters have with each other, it never manages to feel soap opera-ish even though a huge chunk of it tends to take its plays from the soap opera playbook like dead people who aren't dead to affairs and secrets upon secrets. My one complaint is that at times this season's arc felt a little disconnected from the 4 as a group. The first season had the women's lives rocked by the suicide of one of their friends which united them in their search for what happened and why she did while this season tends to have their own storylines separate from everyone elses with a meeting now and then.

Extras are slightly disappointing. We get moment favorites and a look behind the scenes but nary a single commentary is disappointing but still, it's the show that matters and thankfully this is just as guilty pleasure as the show can do.

5 out of 5 stars Another Excellent Season of the Best Show on Television!.......2007-09-12

***DON'T WORRY--SPOILER-FREE REVIEW***

When I first heard of Desperate Housewives, I wasn't interested. Coming off the heels of Sex and the City's series finale, I thought it was destined to be a cheesey, watered down "replacement" for HBO's iconic show. However, after seeing the very first episode, I realized I was wrong. Desperate Housewives is entirely in a class of its own, and distinguishes itself with its unique blend of dark comedy, mystery, and suspense. After the first episode, I was hooked, and have been ever since.

In my opinion, the first season of the show was perfect. Great story, characters, writing, and performances by everyone involved. While many viewers and critics found Season 2 bizarre and irrelevant, I feel it may have been overly-scrutinized and simply didn't live up to the hype that Season 1's overwhelming success had stirred. Yes, some of the sub-plots were uninteresting, and the main arching storyline involving the Applewhites wasn't as intriguing as Season 1's story, but it was still an incredibly fun season to watch.

While Season 2 took on a much darker tone (maybe too dark for the characters involved), Season 3 managed to find the perfect balance of comedy and suspense--a formula that made Season 1 so successful. In fact, Season 3 is probably the funniest season yet! By now, the characters are so well-defined, that the actors and writers have more freedom to take them to some very funny extremes, without having to explain everything along the way.

As funny as it is, Season 3 also weaves a great arching mystery and a number of juicy stories for every character throughout the season, consistently keeping viewers coming back to find out just what will happen next.

Highlight episodes of Season 3 include the season premier ("Listen to the Rain on the Roof"), the INCREDIBLE, FANTASTIC, AMAZING "Bang," "The Miracle Song," "I Remember That," "The Little Things You Do Together," "God, That's Good," "Into the Woods," "What Would We Do Without You?" and the shocking season finale, "Getting Married Today."

The DVDs set is great, but a few more extras like commentaries and maybe some past season promos would have been nice.

Overall, this was an excellent season for the residents of Wisteria Lane! I can't wait to see what Season 4 has in store for them!

4 out of 5 stars Rich and Dazzling : Almost Perfect.......2007-09-10

My Mom and I just finished watching a Marathon run of the entire DVD Set. We finished it in three days, which wasn't so bad really...

The Good:

1. Susan & Mike finally get married. This happens in the Season Finale. Through this season, Susan meets a British dude called Ian but thankfully he dumps her.

2. Bree gets married to Orson Hodge : Played by Kyle MacLachlan, this was my favorite new character this season. The role was very poorly written but the actor does a terrific job.

3. Andrew Van De Kamp comes home : The homeless gay son of Bree finally returns and becomes a series regular this season, though some elements here are a bit controversial (drug usage, gay prostitution, etc)

4. Edie and Carlos get together : A very unusual coupling, but it works. Edie attempts suicide in the season finale. You must watch!

5. Gabrielle Solis marries the Town Mayor : He only does it for the Latino vote, and Gabby finds this out only after she marries him. Oh woe.

The Bad:

1. Ridiculous Sub Plots
2. Teri Hatchers' over the top antics and dialogue
3. 45 year olds behaving like 15 year olds
4. Julie Meyer loses her virginity to Edie's nephew in the most boring and dull storyline ever
5. Bree's daughter gets pregnant and sent away - this wasn't very interesting
6. Lynette almost has an affair. Later, she gets lymphoma. Overall this wasn't a good year for her character.

All things considered, this season really came together. My favorite characters, namely Andrew Van De Kamp and Tom Scavo, all get a lot more screen time, and Felicity Huffman acts REALLY well this entire season.

If youre looking for a fictional fun soap-opera type series to lose yourself into, this is perfect. In fact, while watching it, I thought to myself that this is a worthy successor to Melrose Place in so many ways....

Four Stars.

5 out of 5 stars Wisteria Lane's superb drama.......2007-09-10

As many people have already noted, Season 2 was lacking in substance with the weak Applewhite storyline, although this is not a reason to give up on it. The show, in itself has so much potential for more storylines, secrets and drama. It has a great base plot, of the five housewives (Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman, Eva Longoria, Marcia Cross and Nicholette Sheridan). On top of this, Marc Cherry and his team of writers have built a superb twist of storylines that have devloped, or can and will be over the next few seasons.

Back to Season 3. I won't give the whole storyline away here, although the character of Orson Hodge plays the lead role in this season's secret. From the first few minutes of the first episode of this series, are suspicions are raised. Watch out for episodes 7 'Bang' where a supermarket hostage situation take's place, and episode 16 'My husband the Pig', where this season's main secret comes to an early climax.

Desperate Housewives is a comedy drama to be watched over and over again, its storylines captivating and intriguing, with a real sense of suspense. Season 3 is of equal value as Season 1, and provides a climatic ending, which will make you cry out for the 4th Season. Enjoy it, love it, get it!

The most successful invigoration of a cinematic franchise since Batman Begins, Casino Royale offers a new Bond identity. Based on the Ian Fleming novel that introduced Agent 007 into a Cold War world, Casino Royale is the most brutal and viscerally exciting James Bond film since Sean Connery left Her Majesty's Secret Service. Meet the new Bond; not the same as the old Bond. Daniel Craig gives a galvanizing performance as the freshly minted double-0 agent. Suave, yes, but also a "blunt instrument," reckless, and possessed with an ego that compromises his judgment during his first mission to root out the mastermind behind an operation that funds international terrorists. In classic Bond film tradition, his global itinerary takes him to far-flung locales, including Uganda, Madagascar, the Bahamas (that's more like it), and Montenegro, where he is pitted against his nemesis in a poker game, with hundreds of millions in the pot. The stakes get even higher when Bond lets down his "armor" and falls in love with Vesper (Eva Green), the ravishing banker's representative fronting him the money.

For longtime fans of the franchise, Casino Royale offers some retro kicks. Bond wins his iconic Astin-Martin at the gaming table, and when a bartender asks if he wants his martini "shaken or stirred," he disdainfully replies, "Do I look like I give a damn?" There's no Moneypenny or "Q," but Dame Judi Dench is back as the exasperated M, who one senses, admires Bond's "bloody cheek." A Bond film is only as good as its villain, and Mads Mikkelsen as Le Chiffre, who weeps blood, is a sinister dandy. From its punishing violence and virtuoso action sequences to its romance, Casino Royale is a Bond film that, in the words of one character, makes you feel it, particularly during an excruciating torture sequence. Double-0s, Bond observes early on, "have a short life expectancy." But with Craig, there is new life in the old franchise yet, as well as genuine anticipation for the next one when, at last, the signature James Bond theme kicks in following the best last line ever in any Bond film. To quote Goldie Hawn in Private Benjamin, now I know what I've been faking all these years. --Donald Liebenson

3 out of 5 stars This isn't my idea of Bond.......2007-09-12

When I got this blu-ray disk I had very high expectations. It delivered when it comes to special effects and the outstanding clarity that blu-ray delivers.

However, I was sorely disappointed by the new "Bond". Instead of the incredible charm displayed by previous Bond characters, this guy seems to be more of a cold-hearted killer. I found it hard to care much about what came of him. In my opinion, this is the worst Bond movie I have ever seen.

Perhaps I would have liked it better if the movie had been titled something like "Agent X" since that way I wouldn't have been trying to imagine this guy as being in the same role as the classics starring Sean Connery or Roger Moore.

In a nutshell, I found this to be heartless and generally lacking in class.

4 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-09-10

Great picture quality, and a good movie to boot. The movie has a bit of a dark cast, so still not the optimal test disc for a new system, but still quite good. People say "wow" when they see it.

5 out of 5 stars Bond on bluray!.......2007-09-07

Casino Royale is definitely one of the better Bond films. Part of the wow affect comes from it's awesome bluray video quality. A solid choice for all you Bond fans out there.

4 out of 5 stars Blu-ray is the way to watch this great film!.......2007-08-12

I first watched the 2006 release Casino Royale in the theater. I was very impressed. The movie was unlike any Bond film I had seen before. In fact, the movie is gritty in a way that resembles the very well made Bourne movies. I recently watched the movie again, and found that it was even more enjoyable the second time around. The changes, in my opinion are for the better. I was a fan of Pierce Brosnan in the role of James Bond. I thought that he had been the best Bond since Sean Connery. I thought Roger Moore was okay, while timothy Dalton did nothing for me. Craig made for a very compelling and very human Bond.

The visuals in this film are stunning. The usual opening scenes are - true to form - pretty spectacular. Bond shows little mercy when it comes to resorting to violence. He also gets hurt and bleeds on numerous occasions. He seems ill at ease in a tuxedo, but seems to adapt to the role. The primary setting for the movie is an incredibly picturesque Venice. The film features really stunning scenes with some excellent stunt work. The Blu-ray version is without a dount the version to watch. Clocking in at 144 minutes, the movie seems to fly by with its fast paced story. The only downside to the film is that the villain came across as pretty tame for the most part. There probably could have been a bit more done to make him really evil and dislikable.

Overall this is a strong 4 star movie that is well-worth the price of the movie.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-08-07

This is how you keep a movie franchise going. Great story, great acting and a fast paced movie that almost never slows down(except when James is with the ladies!!)

I have watched it several times now and the more I watch the more I like.

5 out of 5 stars a new bond.......2007-09-15

the latest in the bond series. this one is about the beginnings of 007. i didn't think Craig would be a good bond, but i was totally wrong. it's certainly the best bond since goldeneye. the story was great, the action was great...i hope to see craig in more bond films! the special features were nice too as they talk about the history of bond

4 out of 5 stars "Quite the body count you are stacking up".......2007-09-15

If you are going to introduce a new Bond, what better way to do it than go back to the beginning? This is exactly what Martin Cambell did in Daniel's Craig first movie as the beloved 007. We find a Bond at the start of his career, having recently attained the 00 status, and showing a personality that differs from what we are used to seeing from this character. I am not going to lie to you, Sean Connery still is, and probably will always be, my favorite Bond, but Craig comes pretty close to the Master. And he is undoubtedly better than the last couple of actors that attempted the feat of portraying one of the most charismatic secret agents ever.

This time around, the plot takes us from Madagascar to the Bahamas. In the process we find bankers stealing money from Freedom Fighters, bomb-makers with clear and important targets in mind, a fair amount of poker playing, and of course, attractive women. The most interesting aspect of the movie is the differences in Bond's personality compared to the other movies. Here we can see how his attitude towards women changed and the reasons behind this. Also, there are many details that if you have watched the previous Bond productions you will not see in this one. Even though one of these shows up towards the end, you will miss several Bond traits that are always present. It is fun to go through the movie spotting these absences.

The action scenes are exciting and even though they are unrealistic, as is usually the case with Bond movies, this aspect was toned down from the latest efforts. The high speed chase on foot in Madagascar is remarkable and very well filmed, and even though it runs for a fair amount of time, we do not get bored in the least. As I already mentioned, there is also quite a bit of poker playing. This is only natural, seeing the popularity this game has gained lately. The good news is that they managed to keep these scenes interesting and they fit well with the rest of the plot.

Just when I was ready to accept that there will never be a James Bond that will make me want to see these movies again, I was pleasantly surprised by Craig. I am looking forward to his next effort and hope that we get many more at this level.

4 out of 5 stars No a Cartoon but a good thriller.......2007-09-13

Casino gets back to the original roots of a Bond with a nearly psychotic rage who kills without compunction. It also explains more of how he becomes the detached spy and shuns real personal ties. The stunts are traditional stuntmen based ones, not computer graphic generated ones so it adds to the realism. There are enough cartoonish movies so it's good to see a real old fashioned thriller.

4 out of 5 stars Daniel Craig made a believer out of me!.......2007-09-11

I must first say that I was "extremely reluctant" to accept Daniel Craig into my heart as the infamous, sexy and dangerous 007. I was very upset when they decided that Pierce Brosnan would not be back. A little history....I was a BIG Sean Connery fan, and could not stand Roger Moore or the other Bonds until Brosnan. He had most of the qualities that I feel Sean Connery has......he is suave, charming, handsome and a little mysterious/dangerous...and James Bond use to be Remindton Steele. So, needless to say I didn't want another 007, just when I got use to this one. So imagine my attitude when I went to see this movie.......Daniel Craig was going to be critiqued harshly. Now with all that in mind, I must say I was pleasantly pleased. Although Daniel Craig's was 007, his spin on the character was completely different. And although he was not as suave as Sean Connery, he is just as romantic (Vesper love story crucial to the story), more so because he only tried to get with two women, versus a ton (each critical to the story). And more than anything, he was more believable than past Bonds. He would bleed, he got hurt, he was sensitive and completely human.

This movie was great....the plot is well written, you love to hate the bad guy, you feel sorry for the hero, and I found myself beginning to embrace him as 007. I no longer view 007 as a "single" person, while for some reason in the past it seemed like writers wanted us to think of Connery, Moore, and Brosnan, as the same person. But now, I have come to see the title of 007 as a classification, similar to the position of Inspector and Detective. And I really found myself appreciating the fact that this Bond was so human. Casino Royale is worth watching, and I would love to see Craig in the role again, in the near future.

5 out of 5 stars Sean, move over.......2007-09-10

I have been a James Bond fan for a long time. Though the original Sean Connery movies were before my time, and I was a kid when Roger Moore was making them, I have still enjoyed them. I always thought Sean would be the best. (I generally rated Sean as the best and Roger the worst with all others sorted variously in between.)

However, this is without a doubt the best bond and bond movie ever. I think this is the way the character was meant to be portrayed. I hope that this is the beginning of restarting the bond franchise. I would love to see more bond stories with this type of protrayal.

Once intended as a feature for Johnny Depp, the long-germinating feature film adaptation of Marvel Comics' cult title Ghost Rider stars Nicolas Cage as motorcyclist Johnny Blaze, who transforms into a skull-faced angel of vengeance to battle the forces of evil. Though perhaps a bit too mature for the role, Cage brings a degree of humor to the outrageous proceedings; he's well matched by the Easy Rider himself Peter Fonda, amusingly cast as Mephistopheles, the demon with whom Blaze strikes a bargain to save his father, and in turn, causes his transformation into Ghost Rider. Wes Bentley is also fine as Blackheart, the rebellious offspring of Mephistopheles, and Blazes' chief opponent in the film. They're joined by a solid supporting cast which includes Donal Logue, Eva Mendes, and Sam Elliott, but their participation and a relentless barrage of CGI effects can't hide the fact that the story itself, though largely faithful to its comic origins, is rife with clichéd characterizations and glum B-movie dialogue. Fans of the venerable title may cry foul over this adaptation (as they did over helmer Mark Steven Johnson's previous comic-to-movie feature, Daredevil), but less stringent viewers may enjoy the fiery visuals and Cage's typically quirky performance. --Paul Gaita

4 out of 5 stars Ghost Rider.......2007-09-17

This movie did not live up to my expectations. I was expecting funny but what I got was completely different. Still a good movie but another one I am glad I did not go to the theaters and see.

4 out of 5 stars Not to Cheesie.......2007-09-10

This was not as bad as I thought it was going to be. Special effects are not that bad, Mr Nic Cage does a great job with what it is.

5 out of 5 stars Ghost Rider, fast paced.......2007-09-09

Nicholas Cage (Gone in 60 Seconds) and Sam Elliott (Conagher), two giants and persaonal favorites. Make a pact with the devil and pay the price as did Johnny Blaze. Super adventure movie.

4 out of 5 stars Constantine meets the Prophecy trilogy.......2007-09-09

I have to say that I am not familiar with any Ghost Rider comics, games or had had any other contact with the character apart from this movie so I cannot compare the character to other sources, nor can I take part in discussing the technicalities and the specifics like other reviewers have. Therefore, coming from someone that did not "know" Johnny Blaze prior to the film I have to say that the movie was pretty good!
Ghost Rider brings to the screen the story of a young man who sells his soul to the devil in exchange for curing his father's cancer.
There are slight hints of the X-Files, and strong/obvious elements of the Ninth Gate (starring Johnny Depp), Constantine (starring Keanu Reeves), and the Prophecy trilogy (starring Christopher Walkin), so the movie falls into the action/adventure/mystery/thriller/horror type of category.
Nicolas Cage and most of the rest of the cast carry out their performances well (Blackheart and Mephistopheles could have been played much better).
The plot, the setting, the dialogues, the music, and the special effects, are all good.
Ghost Rider is a movie guaranteed to provide for an evening's entertainment.
In short, I would definitely line up to watch a sequel!

5 out of 5 stars Nicely done!.......2007-09-07

I grew up reading the comics of the Ghost Rider and loved it. So, when Nicolas Cage and Eva Mendes were cast in this, I was less than hopeful. Didn't even see it in the theatres since I was expecting something along the lines of Daredevil, ie. a horrible adaptation serving as nothing more than a vehicle for the actors in the movie. I gotta say, I was very surprised. It was faithful to the comic while giving the story it's own spin. The casting and the effects was great and they even tipped their hat to the original Ghost Rider comic which was a western. Nicely done!

Watching this in Blu-Ray was amazing!! The colors, clarity and sound sucked you right into the movie. I hope they make another and take full advantage of what a great character they have. Just make him a tad darker in the next one. I'd like to see the flaming skull head that laughs as he sears the souls of his enemies.

The ladies of Wisteria Lane returned for a second season of high anxiety, testy relationships, and a new mystery. Susan's (Teri Hatcher) angsty on-again off-again with Mike the plumber (James Denton) took an odd twist when her ex-husband (Richard Burgi) moved in with neighborhood seductress Edie (Nicollette Sheridan), then took an even odder one. Bree (Marcia Cross) resumed her widow's relationship with George the pharmacist (Roger Bart), then descended into personal addiction. Annette's (Felicity Huffman) return to the working world turned bizarre when her husband, Tom (Doug Savant), got tired of being a house-husband and returned to the workforce… at Annette's own firm. And Gabrielle (Eva Longoria) had to cope in her own unique way with Carlos (Ricardo Chavira) in prison.

With the first season's mystery surrounding Mary Alice Young (Brenda Strong, still around as the narrator) revealed--though repercussions were still flying--the show's intrigue came from a new character, Betty Applewhite (Alfre Woodard), and her son (Mehcad Brooks), who try, unsuccessfully, to fit into Wisteria Lane while harboring their own secret. While Woodard is a great actor, her storyline tended to drag down the action, the brilliant Cross was saddled with two dismal character developments, and the housewives spent far too little time together. There were laughs to be had, however. Huffman's interplay with Savant was a highlight, and Gabrielle's conflict with a perceived rival named Sister Mary Bernard (Melinda Page Hamilton) was the funniest of the season. No longer as fresh as it had been in its debut season, Desperate Housewives ended up taking a back seat to its Sunday-night running mate, Grey's Anatomy, and was shut out of the major Emmy awards, but its late-season resurgence was a positive sign going into the third season. With Lesley Anne Warren as Susan's mother, Sophie; Bob Newhart as Sophie's beau; Andrea Bowen as Susan's steadfast daughter, Julie; Jay Harrington as Susan's doctor; Mark Moses and Cody Kasch as Paul and Zach Young, who continue to be plagued by Felicia Tilman (Harriet Sansom Harris) about what happened with Mary Alice; Shawn Pyfrom as Bree's rebellious son; Carol Burnett as Bree's stepmother; and Kyle MacLachlan as an oddball dentist.

On the DVDs
Creator Marc Cherry dominates the DVD features. He has a conversation with his muse, his mother; he comments on 27 minutes of his favorite scenes; and he has optional commentary on both the deleted scenes (15 minutes) and on the two unaired story lines. The longer of the story lines (11 minutes) focuses on Susan and her novel, with some nice interplay with Bob Newhart. In the shorter one (4 minutes), Lynnette tries to sneak in a phone call aboard a plane. The five lead actresses do get a chance to talk about their "juiciest bits" (about two minutes of recapping the season's kisses, etc.), the making of an episode, costumes, and their characters compared to TV's past housewives (with contributions from actresses such as Happy Days' Marion Ross and The Partridge Family's Shirley Jones). --David Horiuchi

The series are very entertaining and when I had TV I was watching them regularly. Now my TV set is not working and it is a good possibility to watch all of the series I have missed. I would also reccomend the DVD for fans of the tv series who have a busy schedule.

4 out of 5 stars Current Prime Time Trash with a Kick.......2007-09-02

Acting, direction, dialogue and situations are enough to satisfy any prime time soap opera addict or enthusist. Several story lines going on at the same time without causing confusion. Bed and heart hopping are constant in this romp through Wisteria Street. Backstabbing, lying, rumors, lawlessness, controlling, and sex all seasoned with evil and vindictiveness.

5 out of 5 stars Great set.......2007-08-16

Season 2 was every bit as good as the first Season. Great behind the scenes footage and outtakes....can't wait for Season 3 to come out.

5 out of 5 stars Desperate Housewives - The Complete Second Season.......2007-07-17

EXCELLENT SEASON 2 OD DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES espacially with the hidden secret of the Applewhites !! I recommend it !!

5 out of 5 stars Another great season.......2007-07-12

Season 2 is awesome. Again, lots of unexpected, bizarre, romantic and funny moments. Actors play is really outstanding.

I liked the flashbacks giving life back to dead characters in a lovely way, especially the ones with Mary-Alice.
I agree, the plot with Caleb was not really absorbing - this is probably why the writers focused more on the main characters lives, and this is a good thing.

If you liked season 1 you'll love season 2. By the way, you better watch season 1 before season 2, or you'll miss a lot.

A love letter to movies (and the French new wave of the 1960s in particular), Bernardo Bertolucci's The Dreamers starts with a 1968 riot outside of a Parisian movie palace then burrows into an insular love triangle. Matthew (Michael Pitt, Hedwig and the Angry Inch), an expatriate American student, bonds with a twin brother and sister, Isabelle (Eva Green) and Theo (Louis Garrel), over their mutual love of film--they not only quote lines of dialogue, they act out small bits and challenge each other to name the cinematic source. Matthew suspects the twins of incest, but that doesn't stop him from falling into his own intimacies with Isabelle. As the threesome becomes threatened, Paris succumbs to student riots. The Dreamers aspires to be kinky, but the results are more decorative than decadent; nonetheless, the movie's lively energy recalls the careless and vital exuberance of Godard and Truffaut. --Bret Fetzer

Description

From Academy Award®-winning director Bernardo Bertolucci (The Last Emperor, 1987), comes an erotic tale of three young film lovers brought together by their passion for movies -- and each other. When Isabelle and Theo (Eva Green, Louis Garrel) invite Matthew (Michael Pitt) to stay with them, what begins as a casual friendship ripens into a sensual voyage of discovery and desire in which nothing is off limits and anything is possible. Featuring an engaging, seductive cast, The Dreamers is a ?spellbinding, provocative feast!" (Ebert & Roeper)

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars I'll say this: it is pretty........2007-09-13

This is a very pretty film. Paris is as rich and gorgeous as ever, and the main trio of actors are beautiful (and you get to see plenty of them!) But the film suffers from a seeming need to make the characters "quirky" that winds up coming across as some cross between pretentious and weird. We got the film because it was supposed to be erotic, but...um?

I guess the bottom line is, I just didn't believe in these characters or their relationship -- it felt contrived, calculated for effect (the "shocking" relationship between the siblings, etc. And hasn't the "American falls in with decadent Europeans" thing been done to death by now?)

I'm sure if you're a fan of one or more of the actors, that's probably enough to carry you through. As I said, they are pretty, but that wasn't enough for me.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful........2007-08-24

This movie is utterly beautiful. Its beyond words as to how amazing this film actually is. Utterly disturbing yet it puts you into some sort of artsy trance. *full frontal from Michael Pitt* You so cannot go wrong with this film!!! XoXoX

5 out of 5 stars The Dreamers or The Kinky?.......2007-08-24

I loved this movie! It is so packed with forbidden eroticism that it goes beyond taboo! But, it is not a bad kind of taboo.

The story centers around a young American film student studying in France. He doesn't have many friends, until one day he meets a beautiful girl at a rally and her off-standish brother. The siblings take the young American under their wing and eventually he moves in with them. It is during this time that he sees how "different" the siblings are.

During a late night bathroom run, he catches a glimpse of the brother and sister lying in the same bed nude. If you are schocked by this first erotic scene then you should definitley not watch the rest of the movie because it definitley doesn't get any milder. Although the plot is less than developed, the viewer is completely sucked in to the lives of the three major characters.

Though the siblings are weird and do things that normal brothers and sisters would never DREAM of doing, there is something extremeley natural and normal about it. As if seeing each other nude and during sexual acts is as normal as sharing a meal at the family dinner table. They portray the classic taboo of incest in a classy manner, if that is even possible.

I find myself unable to articulate just how good I thought this movie was. It shocked me from beginning to end, with behavior that I would normally find disgusting, but somehow found endearing in this movie. You just have to watch this movie for yourself!

5 out of 5 stars Eva Green.......2007-08-14

The only reason to get this movie is for Eva Green. This woman has a body out of this world. She is the only reason I recommend this movie.

5 out of 5 stars an extraordinary film although not for everyone.......2007-07-23

this is by far one of my favorite movies ever. i, however, tend to like movies that are very matter of fact as many french movies are, and movies that deal with sex and sexual issues. the very direct addressing of adolescent sexual awakening and confusion might be too much for people with with sex issue hang ups. but for people who are comfortable with very honest story telling this movie is a triumph.

Audiences were captivated by the women of Wisteria Lane in the first season of Desperate Housewives, the breakout hit from ABC that almost single-handedly lifted the network from its ratings doldrums and brought back the classic TV soap, remixed now with satire, comedy, and mystery. An affectionate yet darkly tinged send-up of suburbia that skirted Twin Peaks territory as much as that of Knots Landing, Desperate Housewives opened with a bang--literally--as perfect-seeming housewife Mary Alice Young (Brenda Strong) went through her picture-perfect day before putting a handgun to her temple and pulling the trigger. Mary Alice's sudden suicide leaves her four closest friends, all housewives of a sort, with a surfeit of grief, a re-examination of their own lives, and a mystery to solve. It also proves to be a catalyst for a seamy study of what goes on inside the finely appointed homes of Wisteria Lane--the tales of which Mary Alice narrates from beyond the grave with a sardonic tone dipped in both honey and arsenic.

There's Martha Stewart-perfect Bree (Marcia Cross), who rules her household with an iron fist in a tailor-made garden glove and seems to have it all, until she finds out her husband (Steven Culp) is cheating on her--and had a serious fetish habit to boot. Sultry Gaby (Eva Longoria), the youngest of the set, is a bored trophy wife whose predilection for shopping and clothes are the perfect decoy for her affair with the hunky teenage gardener (Jesse Metcalfe). Former career woman Lynette (Felicity Huffman) is the most stereotypical housewife, raising four (or was it five?) kids and frustrated at using her cutthroat business skills for suburban politics. And daffy Susan (Teri Hatcher), the divorcee looking for love, sees her prospects brighten with the arrival of hunky plumber Mike (James Denton), who has some desperate secrets of his own. And did we mention the neighborhood hussy (Nicollette Sheridan), the snotty busybody (Christine Estabrook), and Mary Alice's increasingly agitated son (Cody Kasch)?

It was a fast and wild mix of plot and characters that gave Desperate Housewives the zing that made it a number one hit, as it never got too bogged down in any dilemma before moving on to the next. And though it was neither as hard-hitting nor salacious as it was trumpeted to be, the show nevertheless breathed fresh, funny air into comedy television, for even though it hewed to the hour-long soap format, the content was far more dark comedy than sudsy drama. There were fun bright spots to be had, but the story behind Mary Alice's death--which included drugs, murder, blackmail, secret identities, and vengeance in equal amounts--hovered over all the characters, tingeing the farce with the specter of danger. The show's other source of strength is in its peerless ensemble cast, headed by four perfect leading ladies, all Emmy-worthy. Hatcher received the (deserved) lion's share of praise (and a Golden Globe), but her co-stars--especially the underrated Longoria--matched her scene for scene. And though the mystery of Mary Alice's death was ultimately solved (no Twin Peaks teasing here), it was just the beginning of the troubles on Wisteria Lane, where no life went unexamined for too long. --Mark Englehart

    5 out of 5 stars Desperate Housewives.......2007-05-31

Don't miss out on this superb show. "Desperate Housewives" is a fun, sassy, innovative TV phenomenon that mixtures drama, comedy and mystery to create what is perhaps the best TV show of the last decade. It is already regarded as pioneering a new genre and will probably go down in history as one of the most popular shows of our time. In case you've been living under a rock for the past 3 years: the show revolves around 5 seemingly normal housewives who one day learn that one of their friends took her own life following a mysterious secret that haunted her and that we would only learn of at the end of the season. Every housewife goes through her own turmoil (Hatcher falls for a sexy plumber; Cross struggles marital problems and the discovery that her son is gay; Huffman gives up her business career to be a full-time doting mommy to a bunch of hyperactive children; adulterous Longoria sleeps with her gardener and almost loses her home; and Sheridan as the supporting act is always there to make quip remarks). You'll find yourself laughing quite often, thanks to the witty script and the talent of these 4 veteran TV stars (excluding Longoria). Highly recommanded.

5 out of 5 stars Really THE BEST.......2007-05-06

I absolutely love this show. I watched it like a million times! will never sell my set of DVDs :).

    5 out of 5 stars A cultural phenomenon!.......2007-05-03

When I first heard that a series about housewives was being put together, I couldn't help but laugh. When the show was named "Desperate Housewives," I was in disbelief, to say the least. And when everybody started praising it and calling it the finest show on TV, I thought the entire TV population should take a holiday to a deserted island, where there's no cable. Boy, was I wrong - not only is this show the best and most original project on TV, it was also funny, touching and, above all else, incredibly smart.

"Desperate Housewives" invites the audience to the seemingly glamorous lives of women of suburbia and their families. The squeaky-clean surface of the upper-middle class seems heavenly, but that is only its surface. Through our beautiful, perfectly cast leading ladies, we are about to see what life can bring even to the most privileged ones. Susan Mayer (played by Teri Hatcher) is a single mother desperately trying to find the right man. Lynette Scavo (the brilliant Felicity Huffman) is a mother of four, desperately trying to handle her syper children. Gabrielle Solis (Eva Longoria) is a spoiled ex-model who is desperately trying to keep her affair with her teenage gardener a secret from her husband. And finally, there is Bree Van De Kamp (played by the superb Marcia Cross), a perfectionist of a housewife, desperately keeping her house and relationship with her loved ones sterile-clean, in order to escape the obvious problems. Add a bunch of oblivious husbands, one attractive plumber (James Denton), one creepy family with a dark secret and at least one lady of loose morals (Edie Britt, played by Nicollette Sheridan), and you've got yourself a hot TV show.

The reason this show works so well is that all elements were obviously thought out carefully and put together without a problem. The actors are all excellent, and they impersonate their roles so well, you never feel they might actually have a life in the real world, as somebody's wives or girlfriends. Although the focus of the show is primarily on Hatcher, she is outshined by Cross and Huffman. Cross brings fantastic, complex performances to bring the complex character of Bree to life, she is the real star of the show. Huffman, on the other hand, approaches her under-written and un-glamorous role with wit and reality, making Lynette a character that is always closest to our hearts because she is the most humane one. Hatcher and Huffman have their moments (the infamous scene where Susan locks herself out of her house in her birthday suit, or the even more popular car-washing by Edie), but they mostly provide comic relief. Finally, Longoria seems to be on the show mostly for her looks (she was appropriately titled the most beautiful woman on television), but it's not until the second half of season one that she gets to show off her talents, as her character gets more dimension.

You simply cannot go wrong with buying this six-disk set. The residents of suburbia will keep you amused whether it's because of mistery, deceit, control, love or hate. Don't simply expect entertainment - expect an experience that will stick with you long after you're done with an episode. "Desperate Housewives" are not at all silly - it is a marvelous insight into human nature and the values of modern-day America. If you become a fan, you might want to check out Welcome to Wisteria Lane: On America's Favorite Desperate Housewives (Smart Pop series) for a collection of essays that are academic in style and approach the show in a scholarly manner, offering sociological explanation on why the "Housewives" have become a phenomenon.

Writer/director Ol Parker's debut takes its title from "Happy Together" by the Turtles ("Imagine me and you / and you and me") and its inspiration from the romantic comedies of Richard Curtis (Love Actually). There's a twist. Flower shop owner Luce (Lena Headey, The Brothers Grimm) is gay. Newlywed Rachel (a convincingly UK-accented Piper Perabo, Lost and Delirious) is straight. The two meet at Rachel's wedding--Luce designed the floral arrangements--and feel an instant connection. Rachel brushes it off. After all, the charming Heck (Matthew Goode, Match Point) was her best friend long before he became her husband. Shortly after the ceremony, however, she begins to feel as if something is missing. She starts making excuses to see Luce. First it's to thank her for the flowers, then it's to invite her to dinner with Heck and their on-the-make pal Cooper (a hilarious Darren Boyd)...who's crushed when he discovers that Luce prefers women. Rachel, meanwhile, finds married life pleasant enough, but only really feels alive when she's with Luce. It's tricky, because she loves Heck and doesn't want to hurt his feelings, so she and Luce decide to stop seeing each other. But the bond between the two is too powerful for either to resist. What it may lack in originality, Imagine Me & You makes up for in an enchanting soundtrack and sensitive performances from its three likable leads. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

    Description

Piper Perabo lights up the screen as Rachel, a blushing bride whose perfect nuptials take a surprising turn at the altar. An innocent glance between Rachel and an unexpected wedding guest is all it takes to spark a 'love at first sight' romance with a surprising twist -- the object of Rachel's affection is a smart and sensuous... woman! Their shocking romance causes quite a stir amongst her family and friends as Rachel is forced to choose between her husband and the girl of her dreams. Say 'I do' to the wonderfully witty film that Cosmopolitan calls "a refreshing romantic comedy."

    5 out of 5 stars Imagine - A Great Movie.......2007-09-04

I really could watch this film over and over. That is why I purchased it. It is my second favorite movie of this genre. It is sweet and beautiful.

4 out of 5 stars Sensitive and Humorous Film about a Controversial Subject.......2007-09-02

"Imagine Me and You" is a fine film about a controversial subject (i.e. lesbianism) with gentle and humorous performances by the entire cast of performers.
The lead actresses (Piper Perabo and Lena Heady) gave credible and sensitive performances without becoming advocates for a particular position in the debate about human sexuality.
The story relates that true love can happen between two individuals of the same gender without sensationalizing the experience.
Truly, a touching and humanizing film that I recommend for ages 17 and over.

    4 out of 5 stars Very Cute.......2007-09-01

Thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Mind you, it's not terribly taxing on the brain, but I felt it was pretty well done and covered a topic that is more common than thought. If only life ended the way this movie does! Definitely recommend it for the gay/lesbian collection in your home. Then again, one of my favorite movies is "It's In the Water" so....

2 out of 5 stars Best thing about this film is Matthew Goode.......2007-08-26

I loved "kissing jessica stein" and so i figured i'd give this a go. Well, no! Piper Perabo just isn't a good actress. I mean she tries and you can tell, but she just stinks! She pouts the entire way through the film and is put in obsurd situations, the only time she doesn't pout to convey the point 'she's truly found herself' is at the very end! Save your money and time and rent "Kissing Jessica Stein" or "Lost and Delirious" which she did when she was 12 and was to young for us to see how rubbish she really is!

    5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-08-16

This was a nice British comedy with a few out of the normal twist and turns.

A strong candidate for the most sheerly entertaining and enjoyable movie ever made by a Hollywood studio (with Citizen Kane, Only Angels Have Wings and Trouble in Paradise running neck and neck). Positioned between the much heavier and more profoundly disturbing Vertigo (1958) and the stark horror of Psycho (1960), North by Northwest (1959) is Alfred Hitchcock at his most effervescent in a romantic comedy-thriller that also features one of the definitive Cary Grant performances. Which is not to say that this is just "Hitchcock Lite"; seminal Hitchcock critic Robin Wood (in his book Hitchcock's Films Revisited) makes an airtight case for this glossy MGM production as one of The Master's "unbroken series of masterpieces from Vertigo to Marnie." It's a classic Hitchcock Wrong Man scenario: Grant is Roger O. Thornhill (initials ROT), an advertising executive who is mistaken by enemy spies for a U.S. undercover agent named George Kaplan. Convinced these sinister fellows (James Mason as the boss, and Martin Landau as his henchman) are trying to kill him, Roger flees and meets a sexy Stranger on a Train (Eva Marie Saint), with whom he engages in one of the longest, most convolutedly choreographed kisses in screen history. And, of course, there are the famous set pieces: the stabbing at the United Nations, the crop-duster plane attack in the cornfield (where a pedestrian has no place to hide), and the cliffhanger finale atop the stone faces of Mount Rushmore. Plus a sparkling Ernest Lehman script and that pulse-quickening Bernard Herrmann score. What more could a moviegoer possibly desire? --Jim Emerson

5 out of 5 stars The elegant thriller, as invented by Hitchcock.......2007-09-14

When I first saw this movie, I wasn't worldly enough to appreciated the final shot (train plunging into tunnel). After all, I was only 12 years old. I wandered into a neighborhood theatre one afternoon and saw this picture, probably lured by the poster showing Cary Grant being chased by a biplane. This was when neighborhood movie houses showed big-screen movies on a big screen. It was real moviegoing then. The screens have gotten smaller and so have the movies.

I was enthralled from start to finished. I resolved to be suave & debonaire like Grant when I grew up. I missed the mark, by just a little. I thought Eva Marie Saint was the most beautiful creature I had ever laid eyes on. The scene where they meet in the dining car is amazing. Any fan of movie romance shouldn't miss it.

I think Sean Connery studied this movie when he got the James Bond part.

    5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece .......2007-07-24

One of the great movies of all time. One of Hitchcock's best. rather than go for the boxed set - which includes a few of his lesser lights - decided to cherry pick a gem. North By Northwest is a classic. AFI Top 100. Anyone who's a fan of Hitchcock - or just suspense in general - or great movies specifically - you cannot miss with this one.

    5 out of 5 stars Colorized classic.......2007-07-04

An unfortunate aspect of growing up in America is that the turnover in culture is so fast that many older classics are almost unknown to the modern generation. This is especially so with old movies, which, outside of holiday fare like the Ten Commandments or The Sound of Music, do not make comebacks once a decade or so, unlike clothing fashions. This is why so many young people have never seen an Alfred Hitchcock movie. For the longest time, I was one of the ignorant masses, until my mother told me about this great movie-maker. I picked this up at the local library and watched it, and was amazed. This is probably one of the best movies I have ever seen. Part thriller, part romance, part suspense and part action, this movie presaged modern Hollywood fare such as The Fugitive, National Security, and Enemy of the State for example. There is gunfights, chase scenes, set-ups, cliffhangers (literally), and of course the famous cover shot of Cary Grant getting chased by an airplane in an open field. And like many modern action movies, this one has the climax right at the very end, followed immediately by a cut to the closing kiss of hero and heroine.

This DVD restoration is great. The film and audio quality is flawless. The special effects are also top-notch and comparable to anything seen on network TV today. And most importantly, a great storyline. I highly recommend this movie.

The video quality of this DVD is excellent. Though the package doesn't say that it has been remastered, it is better than my previous DVD version. To me, it was worth the cost to upgrade.
