Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars not the best of the 4 part series.......2007-06-20

BEST OF THE BEST 3
4 STARS - STILL GOING STRONG

Although Best of the Best 3 is far different than the first 2 films, and its only returning character is Tommy Lee (Philip Rhee), the movie does a great job with a good plot, characters, and lots of well-done action scenes. The movie deals on the issues of hatred in a small community, and fortunately isn't really ever cheesy. For a B-grade movie, this is definetly one of the finer jobs. Even the acting overall isn't bad.

As mentioned, the action is great. There are lots of martial art fights, gun fights, and explosions galore. Philip Rhee does excellent choreography making the fights look very real. The last fight between him and the main villain is about 3 minutes long and looks pretty good.

Best of the Best 3 turned out to be much better than I thought originally. The story and action is above par for a B-grade movie. If you are a fan of Philip Rhee or enjoyed the first 2 Best of the Best films, you will have no problem enjoying the 3rd movie as well.

BEST OF THE BEST 4
3 STARS - WORST OF THE SERIES

Best of the Best parts 1 & 2 were easily some of the best made B-martial arts movies ever created. Part 3 took it down a few notches, but still was excellent. Without Warning - the 4th and final entry in the series - is average at best, and comes up short in many ways compared to it predacessors.

Again, like in No Turning Back, Philip Rhee as "Tommy Lee" is the only returning charcater from the first Best of The Best films. Also, like in #3, there is no tournament or gambling fight action but a fairly life-like scenario taking place in the real world. The story is about a couple of guys led by Lukasz Slava (Tobin Bell from the "Saw" series) and his handy #2, Yurik Slava (Thure Riefenstein) who go in the counterfeit money making businees. With vital information on a disc that a girl takes for evidence, she slips it into Tommy's pocket as the bad guys come after her. Unaware at first, he soon realizes the hard way that the guys have discovered he has the disk and kidnaps his daughter eventually in order to get it back.

While the story is just average, it is told the same way too. I never found any aspects that really excited me. Although it was pleasant to see Tobin Bell play the boss, both he and his #2 never amazed me. As for action, I was expecting to see more, but it seems each movie in the series contains less and less. The only worthy scene was Tommy taking care of a gym full of guys. Its really the only scene where he gets to fully show off his martial arts skills. The final fight between him and Yurik was so dissapointing. It takes place on an airport runway at night, but contains very little martial arts and is about a 2-1/2 minute scene. When you factor in the other scenes that are occuring and being switched back and forth too during these 2-1/2 minutes, I bet the fight itself is less than a minute.

Combined on one disc, these 2 movies are still a bargain. Not the worst movies ever made, but its diffcult to find many films featuring Philip Rhee, and the Best of The Best series is what he is most famous for.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as the first Best of the Best, but not a total loss.......2007-03-19

BEST OF THE BEST 3: NO TURNING BACK- Tommy Lee (Phillip Rhee) comes to visit his sister and finds that the town is being overrun with members of the Arian brotherhood. These Arian brothers certainly weren't expecting a Taekwondo expert to show up. Tommy and his sister's husband played by Christopher Mcdonald team up to stop the racism.

The action is decent and the story isn't too bad. I haven't seen part 2 yet, but this is not even close to being as good as part 1. The directing job is not bad and the cheesiness is at a bare minumum, but the movie just isn't that interesting. There is 1 very funny clown fight scene. The finale is pretty intense with some good vehicle stunts and a bunch of shootouts. The final fight is a bit above average for an American movie, but you probably won't be blown away it. 2.5/5

BEST OF THE BEST 4: WITHOUT WARNING- Tommy Lee gets gets a tape planted on him with a hidden disc in it that has information the bad guys don't want the police to see. Russian mobsters now look to get the tape back.

Not only does this have more action then part 3, the violence is cranked up about 100 notches. It's much darker, but there is a touching story with Tommy Lee trying to protect himself and just get home to his daughter. Not a great movie, but a great direct to TV kind of movie. 3/5

'Best of the Best 1' has one of the greatest endings I have ever seen. I cannot even try to describe it, but I liked how both parts 3 and 4 also have upbeat endings.

Both movies are full screen, but don't suffer from it. Picture quality is good and sound is fine.

5 out of 5 stars best of the best 3 and 4.......2007-01-06

wow 2 great movies on one disk. they just dont make movies like these anymore!

4 out of 5 stars Best of the Best 3 and 4.......2006-03-18

The whole series deals with the same main principle, honor. These men showed that they could over come obsticles and achieve their goals. Things are not always as we'd like for them to be, but with honor and perservarence, you can acheive much. Especially with friends, and family by your side.

5 out of 5 stars Five for both .......2005-12-20

Phillip Rhee continues the BEST OF THE BEST legacy with the third film, NO TURNING BACK, and the fourth, WITHOU WARNING, and not only reprises his role of Tommy Lee in both movies, but also directs both as well. It goes without saying that a martial artist as talented as Phillip Rhee could direct these movies well too.

Review of BEST OF THE BEST 3: NO TURNING BACK

Korean-American martial arts expert/champion/instructor Tommy Lee (Phillip Rhee) goes to visit his sister, Karen (Cristina Lawson) brother-in-law Jack Banning (Christopher McDonald), whose also sherrif, and nephew Justin (Kitao Sakurai) in Liberty, USA. He is appalled to discover his hometown has become a hive of racism. The Church of the Aryan Crusade, led by Donnie Hanson (Mark Rolston), seeks to do what the Nazi's and KKK have failed to, destroy all non-WASP's. They've already murdered the town's Baptist minister Reverend Phelps (Andra Ward), apparently disgusted at his sermons of a God who doesn't judge people by race or creed. It's up to Tommy, with a little help from Sherrif Jack and schoolteacher Margo Preston (Gina Gershon) to drive these neo-Nazi's out of Liberty once and for all!!!

Review of BEST OF THE BEST: WITHOUT WARNING

Martial arts insructor Tommy Lee lives in L.A. with his daughter Stephanie (Jessica Huang), now as a single father. He has recently began training the LAPD in his techniques of Tae Kwon Do and Hapkido. While in a local grocery store just trying to get a cake for Stephanie's birthday, Mickey (Jill Ritchie) comes in screaming, being pursued by Russian mafiosos after the disc she has containing evidence of their organizations counterfeit money crimes. The thugs kill Mickey, but Tommey kicks the stuffing out of them, and escapes unharmed, not knowing that Mickey has slipped the disc into his pocket. The Russian thugs blast into Tommy's house looking for the disc, but Tommy fights them off and drops Stephanie at the local church while he seeks help from the cops. All he encounters is a crooked cop who Tommy is forced to kill in self-defense. The L.A.P.D., led by grouchy Detective Gresko (Ernie Hudson), belieing Tommy to be a cop-killer are hot on his trail, as are the Russian mafiosos, putting Tommy in one hell of a pickle.

I'll start by declaring my one and only disappointment with both films, and that is that after Phillip faced off against massive former Mr. Universe Ralph Moeller in BEST OF THE BEST 2, he really has no single formidable opponent in either NO TURNING BACK or WITHOUT WARNING. Fights in both movies where Tommy faces off with only one opponent routinely become instantly achieved victories on his part, save for a thrilling knife fight with Donnie Hanson at the end of NO TURNING BACK. But this was probably to be expected anyway. As a result, Phillip routninely takes on two, three and more opponents in the majority of both film's battles. Of course, that's what martial arts guys do. Phillip Rhee certainly provess both his well known martial arts skills and directing ability in both NO TURNING BACK and WITHOUT WARNING. It's an absolute mystery to me why he has been doing these movies ever since.

And the end-credits sequence of WITHOUT WARNING, showing Tommy displaying a wide array of self-defense techniques on his students (with him flowing like water, just as Bruce himself insisted martial arts are about) is another gem of beautiful, slow-motion martial arts action.

5 out of 5 stars Best series I've ever watched !!!!.......2006-11-24

In this volume, the fights are smarter. I really enjoyed this volume because you can see how good Yujiro Hanma (Baki's father), compare to the other fighters. He just beats anyone in his path. I can't wait to see volume 11 cause Baki will fight someone who will be able to stand toe to toe against him.

5 out of 5 stars A truly inspiring and thought provoking film.......2005-06-11

How gratifying was to see a film that is not just highly entertaining but also socially relevant with a powerful message about the need of letting go of our judgements if in fact we all want to live harmoniously in a world as diverse as ours.
This is independent cinema at its best!

5 out of 5 stars THIS MOVIE IS INCREDIBLE! DON'T MISS IT!!!!.......2004-04-27

One of the best films I've seen this year! With the market being so over saturated with typical 'good guy, bad guy' Hollywood movies, it's a refreshing change to run into a movie that so beautifully captures humanity. Thank you to the director for taking on such a tough subject and not forcing you to feel a certain way about the subject matter but allowing you to experience all sides of the conflict. The acting is wonderful on so many levels. The Jesus Nebot as the father and Susan Haskell as the victim's mother specifically give knockout performances. The story will keep you on the edge of your seat. The added benefit being that it'll touch your heart on a deep level. It's no wonder this film has won so many awards. If you're not convinced, go check out the film's website at www.noturningback.com for the trailer.

even as it races towards its inevitable and forgone conclusion. This movie reached me in a place I didn't even know I had. Jesus Nebot's acting and directing ability should make him an international star. To me the two main characters in this drama are Pablo and Mrs. Knight, the bereaved mother (played by JAG's Susan Haskell in a gut-wrenching performance), forever connected to each other by an accidental tragedy with a cosmic resolution. This movie will stay with you.

The 13-part Banner of the Stars (2000, a.k.a. Celestial Banner) is the sequel to Crest of the Stars (1999); both of them are based on the science fiction novels of Hiroyuki Morioka. Banner picks up the story three years after the conclusion of the first series. Human noble Jinto Lin continues to declare he will always remain at the side of Abh princess Lafiel, although she generally treats him with scorn. The war between the Abh and humanity is heating up again, and Lafiel is now Deca-Commander of the spaceship Basroil; as supply officer, Jinto follows her into their first battle. Banner of the Stars suffers from the same weaknesses as Crest: the filmmakers spent too much time inventing weird Abh words and runes, and far too little developing the characters and choreographing what should be dramatic battle sequences. (Rated 13 and older: violence, alcohol use) --Charles Solomon

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Space Adventure continues the "Crest of" three years later........2004-03-28

Jinto and Lafiel are still the pivotal characters in this sequel to Crest of the Stars. I have to disagree with those saying that characterization is lacking, it is in fact very well done. A few things may be assumed from the Crest series for the leads, but besides that's it's still one of the series strengths.

This time the series focuses more on the Space War with the United Humans, than in the original. I gave it a slightly lower rating because of that. It was a little more difficult to contrast the two leads as shipmates. I preferred the changing locations, and the dynamics of the original series.

Battle strategy, and space warfare were done very well, plus once again had a very realistic feel to it. As in the first series, the animation, and visuals are all done first rate. The series tries hard to create its own culture. As the world of Star Trek, and the world of Star Wars, are structured to have an independent notion of the future. So does the world of the Abhs and Humans.

One question I do have for series of this kind is why the political structure for such an intelligent race. They use what seems to amount to a Monarchy. Basically, this is just a unified Feudal system, an ages old government with many flaws. One of those flaws being that the Royals are those who ultimately command. As history has shown us, there are wide differences between the intelligence, and ruling capabilities of Kings and Emperors!

5 out of 5 stars banner of the stars Dvd box set release date?.......2004-02-29

Banner of the stars is overall an excellent series that blends the genre of science fiction with fantasy, It has elves in outer space! It is a grand space opera on the level of star wars, star trek, Space battleship Yamato (starblazers) with a bit of tolkien thrown in. I wish the studio would release a box set for Banner of the stars and banner of the stars II. I bought the crest of the stars set to economize, and loved the conflict and love story of the show. It reminded me why I love Mythology, science fiction and fantasy literature. Like the Lensman Books Of "Doc" smith and Empire and foundation novels of asimov. It also reminded me of my love for the works of edgar rice burroughs, mainly a princess of mars, and tolkiens middle earth saga comprised of the silmarillion, the hobbit and the lord of the rings.

5 out of 5 stars Comment on the Editorial Review.......2004-01-21

In the Amazon.com Editorial Review, the reviewer claims that the producers of this series (as well as Crest of the Stars) spends too much time inventing words and runes and not enough time with character development and space battles. What if it does? Didn't Tolkien do the same thing with The Lord of the Rings? (Not the movies.) But they didn't: Crest and Banner are strong on character development, with Jinto's (and sometimes Lafiel's) internal monologues scattered throughout the series--which were kept from the original books, I assume. Also remember that this series is not about humanity, really. It's about the Abhs, which are human, but very different than your average human. There aren't going to be all that many traditional anime relationship/character building moments, because they sometimes don't work on the Abhs. In exchange you get some fresh ideas that you (and the planet-born humans in the show) maybe surprised at.

The space battles are gorgeous and there aren't very many of them, but if you're looking only for space battles you shouldn't be watching this series. This series deals much more within the bridges of ships and the characters and the planning of the overall war--sort of like a happy War and Peace for space operas. The entire concept of Plane Space (their faster than light travel method) makes large battles easier to comprehend for the viewers, while keeping the complexity of space battles and the need for good strategy, de-emphasizing the pretty graphics and large explosions and putting the focus on what is really the most important stuff.

4 out of 5 stars The continuing adventures of Lafiel and Jinto.......2003-12-15

For those who enjoyed Crest of the Stars, picking up Banner of the Stars should be pretty much a given.

It takes place three years after the events of Crest of the Stars. Lafiel, having finished training, is now the commander of her own ship. She has quickly snatched up Jinto as her supply officer, and we meet the rest of her senior officers as they are brought up to speed on their first mission.

They are being assigned under one Admiral Atosuryua as part of a fleet with orders to create an Abh corridor through a solid United Mankind territory. The entire fleet is abuzz with the news that ultimate responsibility for the mission will lie with Admiral Nereis Bebaus and his twin and Chief of Staff Nefee, who belong to a family nicknamed "Spectacular Insanity" for it's reputation of creating geniuses and madmen in equal measure. Not exactly comfort inspiring.

Oh yes - and Atosuryua is the sister of Baron Febdash. Yep - THAT Baron Febdash - the one who Lafiel had to kill back in the middle of Crest. Disturbingly, she wants Lafiel and Jinto, the only people available who knew her brother, to join her for a memorial dinner to remember him.

Will the Bebaus twins remain sane through the whole mission? Is Atosuryua painfully aware of what her brother was and grateful that Lafiel rescued her father from his imprisonment, or is she out for revenge? Will Lafiel get her crew through the mission in one piece? Tune in to the next two volumes to find out.

Banner successfully expands the Stars universe, mixing old characters and new. The oh-so-bored Spoor, who rescued Lafiel and Jinto at the end of Crest, and her hapless Chief of Staff are back. The intriguing Dusanyu, who made a cameo in Stars as the Abh representative to whom Jinto's father officially surrendered, plays a major role. And it's hard not to laugh, though it may be nervous laughter, as the Bebaus brothers routinely question eachother to determine if they both retain their faculties. It's genuinely funny, but you sympathize with their fear and shame and wonder if things are going to end well for them when all is said and done. Finally, while their relationship is intact and dominant, it's nice to see Lafiel and Jinto's social circle expanding as they chat with the crew.

The Stars franchise remains space opera at it's finest.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely original, daring, and beautiful.......2003-07-18

Although this anime may be categorized as sci-fi it's truly in a class of it's own. The characters are original. The friendship between Lafiel and Jinto is also unique. You won't find the typical story here! You have to try this out! One of my most favorite series ever.....!!

I'm as old as GT's career and I've been listening to them since I was born (and that's no lie).
I had the DVD on hold for me for three months before they stopped pushing the release date back and finally sent it. While first I expected more to it, I did fall in love with it.
The videos are fairly exceptional for the time (remember, this was the 80's) and the commentary is halarious at times. The bonus footage is often very funny and worth seeing.
I had no idea these guys were so outgoing, but they're actually really fun to watch, over and over and over.

With the exception of the drummer, Michael Hanson, you'll get a charge out of Sam (the keyboardist who's always smiling), Al (the guitarist who is quieter but still likes to laugh), Alan (the incredibly energetic frontman), and Wayne (the goof of the group).

Some of the videos are nothing special (according to Alan, "what were we thinking, what was anybody thinking?!" and "we would NEVER do this today"), while others are very memorable and unique such as "I Will Be There" filmed on Table Top Mountain, "Thin Red Line" involving Kilts, and "Animal Heart" where the lust of the song seems to be responded through Alan's explicit expressions. I'll bet no one will even understand what the video is implying so I'll come out an say it: the girl is the tiger, Alan is the eagle. How many of you figured that out?

I really hope these guys can keep recording because they're one of few groups that didn't part ways on bad terms and are still in to it for the music.

Way to go guys!
