In reducing the rules of romance to a 10-day plan for repairing a breakup, Two Can Play That Game tickles a few funny bones while "keepin' it real" about heartbreak and human behavior. Our hostess through this marathon of head games is 28-year-old Shanté (Vivica A. Fox--emphasis on the fox), who speaks to the camera so much that critic Roger Ebert nicknamed this movie "Waiting to Inhale." In a film packed with positive stereotypes (no crack-smoking gangstas here, thank you), she's a successful marketing executive, and her straying boyfriend is a high-profile attorney (Morris Chestnut). Their turbulent romance survives Shanté's 10-day power play, but not all viewers will be so lucky, since this movie is alternately charming and aggravating, and there's precious little romance while the lovers are plotting their moves. Still, it's a safe bet that many people will appreciate this movie's endearing lesson--namely, that sincere groveling can save you lots of time and heartache. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars One of my favorites.......2007-06-27

Yes, it's campy and Vivica Fox's weaves are distracting. But overall, whenever I catch this film, I still laugh. Anthony Anderson was truely halarious and honestly I haven't seen him anything quite as funny since. Overall, this is a fun movie about the games men and women place. Highly recommended.

Great Movie! I am glad to have it as part of my collection.

4 out of 5 stars Morris needs lessons from Anthony?... As If!!.......2007-04-29

I loved this movie. It reminded me alot of relationships I'd had in high school, lol. The only thing that really aggravated me about the film is sexy fine man Morris Chestnut seeking and needing advice from dumpy funny jokeman Anthony Anderson. I mean, come on now! If that's the case the roles should have been reversed with Morris giving advice to Anthony, that would have been more believable. The other thing that irritated me is watching Monique in yet another role where she is desperately seeking laughs as the fat woman hanging with skinny B?%ches as she likes to call them on stage and I'm sure off. Other than that this movie was great. Vivica never fails to please, Morris is as fine as ever, Tamala Jones is especially funny and gorgeous. Thumbs up!

This seller was very pleasent to work with. The products came in the shape that was listed, but they did show up a bit later than expected.

5 out of 5 stars Funny, Sexy - Great Movie.......2007-01-29

I always pull out this movie knowing I am going to laugh and have a good time. It's about an attractive successful black woman who thinks she can control her man with "Rules". It's a really fun movie, that you probably shouldn't watch with your man because he will learn all of your tricks. Vivica and Morris do an excellent job showcasing their talent and Anthony is just as funny as ever. They just let Anthony be himself in this film and he let it all out. Great movie! Definitely worth buying and watching.

Neve Campbell is an arresting enigma in When Will I Be Loved, one of writer-director James Toback's most mysterious and successful minimalist dramas about sex, deception, and mutable identities in New York City. Campbell plays twentysomething beauty Vera, whose nude shower scene during the film's opening credits looks more like mythic preparation for a soon-to-be-fateful day than brazen exploitation. Ensconced in a fantastic loft paid for by her parents (Barry Primus, Karen Allen), the unemployed Vera embarks on an odyssey that begins with a mutually deceitful job interview with a college professor (Toback), leads to misadventures in questionable perception in Central Park, and climaxes with Vera's successful manipulation of two powerful men, one a craven lover (Fred Weller) and the other an Italian billionaire (Dominic Chianese) trying to get her in bed for a lot of money. Provocative as a good urban legend, the film sticks with one for a long time. --Tom Keogh

Description

Neve Campbell, Dominic Chianese and Fred Weller star in this smoldering erotic thriller about a femme fatale exploring the frightening reach of her sexual power - and the red-hot fusion of money, power and desire. Directed by James Toback, When Will I Be Loved is an "illumination of sexual and identity politics" (Slant Magazine) that sizzles and seduces.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Loud & Obnoxious.......2007-09-05

I only made it through the first ten minutes. It was like watching the world's worst and loudest music video. Only worse.

3 out of 5 stars Nice flick to pass the time away........2007-06-23

Neve Cambell is six years older than she was in "Wild Things" She has never looked more beautiful or sexier than in this movie. The opening scene proves that. All in all, the characters are well developed & believable. There is a element of "Indecent Proposal" (1993) but not a ripoff. Nice flick to watch while sipping wine in front of the fireplace with you main squeeze. Nothing to get excited about, except, Neve's awesome bod.

As Vera, Campbell plays a free spirited bisexual with a girlfriend. An eccentric European Count sees her & offers 100 grand if she will sleep with him. Vera ups the ante to a million dollars in cash. He agrees to do! However, Vera already rich & she does not like the thought of men trying buy her. She plots a scheme to con the count.

2 out of 5 stars Not that great of a film.......2007-01-09

Story is very weak and the acting is robotic. I suggest missing this flick.

1 out of 5 stars WHY?.......2006-12-07

After reading many of the earlier reviews I can only conclude that the reviewers were watched one movie and wrote about another. The movie seemed to be a series of isolated conversations that made no real sense.

The back of the DVD case leads you to believe this is a 'smoldering erotic thriller'. I guess the movie is so short (only 81 minuts) because all the eroticism ended up on the cutting room floor. When Will I Be Loved is almost as erotic as a Kermit the Frog cartoon.

I recomand this DVD only to people that are planing a lawn party and nave a need for miniature frisbies.

One star only because I can not award a lower number.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting yet somewhat strange character study is worth a look .......2006-12-01

Typical James Toback fare here: a leisurely story laced with edgy sex in stylish New York living spaces that are just as alluring and sexy as the beautiful bodies. Plusses: a courageously-on-display Neve Campbell, some good exchanges between Ms. Campbell and Dominic Chianese, and a short running time. Minuses mainly consist of several head-scratching moments, including a needless Mike Tyson cameo and a weird tryst in the park. When it's all over, you've gotten enough of a portrait of the Campbell character for the story to work as a character study, though enough of the director's intent remains mysterious enough that the movie ultimately feels like an art-film exercise. So, if you don't have a lot of patience for films with an ambiguous art-house feel, you might want to stay away from this. The DVD extras are somewhat illuminating and interesting.

4 out of 5 stars Sensual Repression via the 80s.......2006-06-10

This is a nostalgic bit of filmmaking from the 80s. The sights and sounds are inimitably 80s. However, this is sort of an enigmatic film. As much as it is part of the 80s it seemed to lack the chic timeliness of those days. I don't know why but David Caruso was the one actor who I remember being indelibly connected to it. Every time I think of this film all I can remember is Caruso's screen presence even though he is a minor yet disquieting character. Steven Bauer is very good and gives a heartfelt performance. Barbara Williams seemed rather detached and added to the obscure feeling this film has along with John Getz's performance as well. Bauer, Williams and Getz remain no more than shadowy figures upon recollection, while the production design, cinematography and story remain imbedded in the psyche. The story is interesting and disturbing at the same time and I wonder who really is the thief of hearts in this tale giving the film's ultimate conclusion. I think Douglas Day Stewart's directed only one other motion picture and he is primarily a screenwriter. The film's ambiguous style seems to bolsters that fact. The film is a very provocative mix of sensuality, sexual repression and seems to represents an era when introverted self gratification and glossy lifestyles replace traditional intimate values between otherwise loved ones. Interestingly, this film seems to have a strange allure about it leaving an indelible impression once viewed.

5 out of 5 stars Thief of Hearts.......2006-01-30

The movie is great but its not for young viewers under 13 is really pushing it.. the movie has some sexual content and wouldn't even let my 13 year old watch it. Some violence but it has a lesson in the movie also. Crime doesn't pay, and love is blind. Steven Bauer was a hotty, back then ...

3 out of 5 stars Thief.......2005-07-28

True 80's love story! Brought back memories of styles, habits, and music of the pass...The me generation!

4 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Escapist Chick Flick!.......2005-03-24

The premise - how does it feel to be able to meet and then fall head over heels in love with your dream guy who willingly reinvents himself for you and loves you unconditionally?

I first watched "Thief of Hearts" back in 1985 when I was still a teenager and was very moved by the poignancy of it all. It has been 17 years since, but I feel no differently as I re-watched it on DVD. (Why did they not at least include a director's commentary in the bonus materials, amongst other things of producing a watered down verison of the original movie)?

The ending sequence was particularly heart-wrenching as Steven Bauer's character, albeit nothing more than a common burglar, broke into tears when he realised the fantasy world he had created for himself was over, but nonetheless defended the love of his life despite it all when it came to the crunch. Unlike many American movies where script-writers / directors inadvertently feel hard-pressed to provide a positively schmaltzy ending to love stories or the like, kudos to the restrain applied to "Thief of Heart"'s finale, ending the movie on the only credible, but no less cathartic, note to a doomed love affair.

2 out of 5 stars NOT the Original Version.......2004-08-12

This has already been expressed here in the reviews, but just as a reminder one more time..... this DVD is NOT the original version. The original version has more material and is much better. Hopefully someday they'll release an Unrated Version the way it was on VHS at one time.

5 out of 5 stars Artistic, Erotic, Poetic and Tragic.......2007-06-12

I prefer this movie to the original Dangerous Liaisons for its brilliant colors and seamless flow of the plot. Though simple to the contemporary eyes, it is very refreshing to watch the "old-fashioned" but effective tricks men used 200 years ago to chase women. Compared to the original DL movie, the young actors portray innocence in a much more convincing way, which amplifies their ill fates even more tragically. The dialog is concise and poetic. It accurately reflects the elegance of the aristocrats with the simple humbleness and reservation unique to the Asian culture. I've watched this movie in both English and Chinese subtitles and feel that the Chinese translation depicts the essence slightly better, perhaps because of the closeness of the cultures.

    5 out of 5 stars sensual.......2006-06-13

every scene is as exciting as the next, the flirtation and sexual scene are done very tasteful, full of pasion i envy the women in this film.

5 out of 5 stars A must, especially for those who appreciate Asian culture!.......2006-04-22

I'm a young adult, not an artsy-fartsy kind of guy, and most foreign films are just bizzare... but this movie was very good. If you've seen Dangerous Liasons, you will like this Korean version of the story. Heck, if you're any part Korean like me, you'll enjoy it even more! Most people overlook how Korean society was, since China and Japan overshadow them in history. The way the characters interact with each other, and the cool clothing and atmosphere make for a movie that is both mentally and intellectually stimulating! It has all sorts of elements, mostly drama of course, and will evoke many emotions from amusement to sadness. I feel that most people will find at least one character in this movie with whom they can empathize and become attached to their destiny in the film. Give it a chance!

    5 out of 5 stars WoW ! :-P Cruel Liaisons.......2005-11-01

As good as or better than:

5 out of 5 stars Stunning imagery & great acting.......2005-07-09

This movie is incredibly stunning both in acting and imagery. The actors, especially Lee Mi-suk & Bae Yong Joon, give believable & deliciously wicked performances. Not to mention the scenery, full of rich vibrant colors that will take your breath away. It is definitely worth watching. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Learn Game from the man who invented it.......2006-08-25

I bought the 5 DVD Set after I read the Venusian Arts Handbook and it was money well spent. It was difficult to pull the trigger without knowing what to expect, but there is a ton of material and info packed into these DVDs.

There is no other person I would want to learn this stuff from other than Mystery. In these DVDs he explains the entire Mystery Method and gives a lot of examples of material to use next time you go out.

Production quality could have been better, but I bought these for the content which is without question top notch.

5 out of 5 stars Top quality content, with a price tag that fits.......2006-08-25

I read the game in march, then I read the venusian arts handbook, and was dating 3 girls within a month. I thought I was good, but when I checked out the DVD set, I was quite frankly blown away.

the graphics are a bit amateur, and some of the titles aren't very well labeled or formatted, but in terms of content, you will not find a better resource for the (albeit expensive) price. just look around, and you will see plenty of guys who want to part you from your money. Im kinda sad to see that financially motivated other users have posted reviews in the past to slander these guys, despite the fact that the material on these DVDs is awesome, and it works, with practice.

If you're looking for a magic pill, this product is not for you. But if you're willing to put in the time to get good with this stuff, then this is the best resource to expand your repertoire, as it allows you to analyze DELIVERY of material (e.g. body language, intonation, facial movements, etc.), in addition to the material itself.

5 out of 5 stars New Depths of Expression.......2007-04-17

My eyes were glued to the screen while watching this beautiful and exceptionally acted film. This film really is a work of art in itself. The plot is confusing at times to follow, but that is part of it's appeal. I suppose. I had to watch it twice to understand the movies themes and it's subtle messages, but it was well worth it. Sadly, too many reviewers trash this film's ratings because it was too hard to understand. Don't let that stop you from watching Silence Becomes You. Just don't expect a huge sign to appear at the end of the film explaining everything to you. There are some fantastic ideas and themes explored in this movie, some great, visually enticing scenes and the movie score is superb.

1 out of 5 stars Worst Movie ever made.......2006-11-29

This has got to be the worst movie ever made in the history of humankind. The script writer lacks all the atributes that a good writer needs to have, even if you go to her website, her art is aweful and tasteless. I can't beleive any movie company would ever agree to make such a bad movie. It was a waste of my whole one dollar I paid for it in the clearance section.

3 out of 5 stars hit and miss.......2006-03-15

The movie is definately visually appealing.
If you want this movie to make sense you're going to have to work to for it because the movie doesn't give any easy answers. This movie says a lot, about people, life, development, art....I could go on.
I was expecting some weird movie with maybe a few good sleazy scenes...I got that, and way more than I expected.
Overall I liked it, just don't watch it with any expectations.

2 out of 5 stars The Other gone wrong......way wrong!.......2006-02-26

Don't you wish you were in Joe Anderson place? Come on, all guys do. Still can that save this movie from total boredom? Probably not. You have 2 ladies trying to have some fun but from watching this....you get the sense that they were little daddy's girls. Trying to have fun yet do not want to disappoint their daddy, whom i assume past away. Alicia tries to be sexy and it shows but the plot is ho hum...boring!

I can see some people might like stuff like this but it's not for me. Watch it if your a Clueless fan cuz that is what you will get by watching this....get it?

1 out of 5 stars Beautifully shot film is a boring dud.......2006-02-23

I wanted to like this film. I was rooting for it. I love artsy sepia-toned horror films like LOST SOULS and THE RING and GOTHIKA -- but SILENCE BECOMES YOU is none of that.

It's not a horror film. It's hard to say what it is. I kept waiting for something to gel; a story, a theme, a point ... something! But NOTHING!

The events (it's hard to call this a story) concern two young women living alone in a mansion. Their father was an alchemist. They allude to a "plan," which seems to involve finding a young man to mate with so they can have a baby.

Well, one of the sisters picks up a drifter in a bar and takes him home. Then ... nothing much. Lots of talk and flashbacks and superimposed images. I mean LOTS of superimposed images, all throughout the film, but to no clear purpose.

We see images of the young women as children, superimposed all over the place. At one point, the man is asleep, then he's woken by one of the women as a child. But it means nothing. Is it a dream? A flashback? An imagining? Alchemical magic? Does it occur in the future? The past? Another dimension?

"Who is beside you?" the man asks without moving his lips.

"No one is beside me," the child answers.

"You're just a child," the man says.

"I am eternally a child," the child replies.

    Uhm, okay.

These images (of the women, their parents, the young man) are constantly superimposed, with sounds too. LOTS of magical-poetic gibberish, with no clear rhyme or reason.

The film seems to borrow a bit from D.H. Lawrence's THE FOX in that these two women become jealous over the man.

All in all, a confusing mish-mash. Beautiful sets, photography, sepia colors, but so BORING as it's all for naught. Just gibberish, and superimposed images, and wandering in the snow, and just sheer nothing.

Yes, there's an ending. Or rather, the film ends. Don't ask me to explain it. There's a fire. Or was there? It seemed a big fire, but then the house seems unaffected. The man seems to have died, but later we see him superimposed beside one of the women. One seems to have lost her baby in childbirth (or did she?) while the other woman is pregnant. Was it all a dream? A magical alter-reality? Who knows!

I'm sure some people will be bowled over with stupefied admiration, but I like a story to go with all that pretty photography.

An artsy-fartsy, none-horror, sorta Jane Austin type Gothic suspense thriller (the women watch an Austin movie on TV), but really, WHAT IS IT?

Seven travelers stranded in the Italian countryside accept the hospitality of a kindly castle lord, but what horror awaits them: the family has a curse on it that dooms the eldest daughter of each generation to become an agent of the devil, and guess who's coming home. After a striking opening scene (involving a Nazi officer in 1944 overseeing the birth of his child, which turns out to be... an accursed daughter!), this horror tale drags along at a glacial pace until the visitors settle in enough to take a little time out for sex, which serves as an appetizer to sadistic murders. The guests, ostensibly representative of the Seven Deadly Sins, die in appropriately thematic twists at first, though after gluttony, greed, and lust the point gets stretched. This low-budget example of horrotica has its entertaining moments, an appropriately lurid style (courtesy of Belgian director Jean Brismee), and even an appearance by former French matinee idol Jean Servais (Beauty and the Beast). Included are trailers for this and three other Italian exploitation films and an extended introduction by British horror hostess Eileen Daly (which was actually recorded for a different film!), a black-leather Elvira with a whip and a penchant for kink that may not be to the tastes of all audiences. -Sean Axmaker

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating and Chilling European Gothic Masterpiece from 1971.......2007-09-02

THE DEVIL'S NIGHTMARE (aka THE DEVIL WALKS AT MIDNIGHT)

      YEAR: 1971
      RUNTIME: 93 minutes
      COUNTRY: Belgium/Italy

THE PLOT: Seven people are forced to spend the night in some eerie castle in Europe. The devil sends a succubus to kill each one that indulges in one or more of the seven deadly sins (lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath [i.e. hatred, unrighteous anger & grumbling], envy/jealousy and pride).

COMMENTARY: Wow, this is a real hidden gem of gothic horror. It has a great cast and story and was filmed in a real castle. The people and the sins they indulge in are as follows:

      (1.) Bus driver: gluttony.

(2.) Angry wife: greed, jealousy (although her husband gives her good reason to be jealous), envy (of the beauty of the other women) and anger (I don't think she smiles once, except when she's swimming in gold).

      (3.) Husband: lust -- adultery.

      (4.) Brunette: Lust -- lesbianism & adultery.

(5.) Blond: Sloth, lust -- lesbianism.

(6.) Old man: wrath -- excessive grumbling & negativity.

(7.) Priest-in-training: Although he flirts with pride (listen to him during the chess match) and lust (for the redhead) he evidently never commits a mortal sin (or, if he does, he humbly & quickly repents rather than revel in it like the others).

[MINOR SPOILER ALERT] Note that the minister willing sacrifices himself to perdition to prevent the other six from being damned. This is an example of agape love and displays a true Christ-like heart. Paul the apostle had the same spirit as evidenced in Romans 9:3. [END SPOILER].

HIGHLIGHTS: The film features three incredibly gorgeous women -- a blond, brunette and redhead, no less. The succubus is the redhead, played by Erika Blanc. All three are voluptuous; each possessing a very distinctive beauty. NOTE TO MEN: It goes without saying that if you struggle with lust you might want to skip this one, especially in light of a fairly overt lesbian scene (which they end up dying for, so no can argue that the film advocates the practice, no more than it advocates any other sin depicted, like gluttony, adultery, greed and grumbling).

Another highlight is Erika Blanc's subtle make-up as the succubus combined with her amazing ability to contort her face from stunningly sharp to utterly hideous. Seriously, I NEVER get frightened by horror films, but when Erika morphs into the succubus and hideously contorts her face, it's absolutely CHILLING.

TECHNICAL INFO: Some versions of the film have a tasteless porno-horror "intro" tacked on. This "intro" is not part of the original picture and simply has no business being there; in fact, it horribly mars it. No doubt is was tacked on by some latter-day producer in order to excite pre-pubescent boys ("Oooh, that's cooooool!"). The version featured with "Messiah of Evil" doesn't have this silly intro, but the sound quality isn't very good. I saw another version that has the intro but the sound quality was fine.

FYI: The original title translated to English is "The Long Night of the Devil" or "The Devil's Longest Night." I feel the title "The Devil's Nightmare" is weak and much prefer another alternative title "The Devil Walks at Midnight."

FINAL ANALYSIS: Since this is a European picture from the early 70s, it's understandably dated, dubbed and slow-paced. The viewer must keep this in mind to appreciate it. Many themes are touched upon: Does God exist? What about the devil and his demonic servants? Can he be trusted to 'make a deal' with? (Yeah, right). Is there such a thing as sin? And, if so, what are its consequences? Another fascinating theme touched upon is human nature and the continual conflict between spiritual and carnal qualities that we can all relate to. The film also powerfully addresses the incredible self-sacrificial nature of agape love -- love in it's highest and purest form.

Make no mistake, this is a powerful piece of gothic-horror cinema, perhaps even a masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best 70's Eurohorrors.......2007-06-06

It has been some time since I've taken interest in horror. Last year I delved into Asian horror and was quite enamoured with it, but it's become stale and repetitive. I'm also not fond of American horror or most mainstream horror films. My best bet? Euro-horror, of course, but not in the mold I have been used to (Argento, Soavi, Rollin, Bava, and so forth). Instead, I've been picking up obscure little titles that sell for $5.00 as part of a "multi-pack" of movies. The one film from these bargain bin films that stands out as being effective would be "The Devil's Nightmare." The title alone may remind you of a certain film that came out by Rob Zombie recently, but it really has nothing to do with it, and rightfully so. "The Devil's Nightmare" is a real stand-out film, and mostly because of the actors Erika Blanc who plays the succubus who plys her dark arts for the devil, and a man with the most creepy yet enigmatic visage I've ever seen (I think it may be Daniel Emilfork; I think he also played a villain in "City of Lost Children") who plays The Devil. The film does have a surreal quality to it, but not in the tight, technical way of early Argento or Soavi, it has a more haunting quality, even in daylight scenes. The music also helps to convey a sense of the sinister, with all the aplomb of 70's soundtrack nostalgia.

      5 out of 5 stars OK...it's not perfect.......2007-03-25

It really isn't. But I should start by stating that I love "odd" films. I have a taste for D-horror films. And this one is truely a D-horror film!!! It's got a gothic mood. Some fun music and some interesting deaths. It's not the most exciting of films...but I'm personally ok with that 'cuz it's the kinda film I like. This film will not be for everyone. I've seen some reviews for this film that are not good...and those people are right. It's isn't a great film. But if you are in for a film with character...this is the one!

2 out of 5 stars Prepare yourself for pure EVIL.......2007-01-21

A busload of morally ambiguous tourists are rerouted to the spooky castle of a former Nazi baron (formerly a Nazi, still a baron) in order to save the rest of the travel for the following day. Coincidentally, the baron's daughter, a succubus, shows up to condemn the tourists to varying circles of Hell, using the 'Seven Deadly Sins' as the guidebook.

Apparently, the Seven Deadly Sins consist of the following:

      (1) Sin: Lust. Punishment= Cheating husband and insatiable brunette strumpet are killed by medieval torture devices.

      (2) Sin: Greed. Punishment= Ugly frigid wife suffocates on gold glitter.

      (3) Sin: Gluttony. Punishment= Gruesome slob is invited to a gigantic feast and then, after gorging himself and making any perspective viewer (such as myself) nauseous, chokes to death on a glass of wine.

      (4) Sin: Guilty Of Being A Hot Bisexual Blonde Who Lounges Seductively In A Bed. Punishment= Death by python!!!!!

      (5) Sin: Complaining Too Much. Punishment= Old creep kept awake all night and then thrown from a tower window.

So anyway, there you have it, all 5 of the Seven Deadly Sins and the corresponding Dante-style punishments. Additionally, this movie boasts the worst Satan of all time. Looks sort of like a convenience store clerk who doubles as the human pretzel at a carnival freakshow.

2 out of 5 stars Not very thrilling.......2006-09-04

"Devil's Nightmare" has an intriguing cult reputation, and some bizarre stills of the film's star Erika Blanc that are taken from it promise it to be quite a lurid thriller...sadly it isn't.

Seven tourists stay overnight at a large castle, and are regaled with gruesome history tales by the ghoulish butler. The host tells them the family is cursed by a succubus, whereupon an eighth guest suddenly arrives in the shape of the stunning Ms Blanc. No prizes for guessing what she is then! After bewitching the other guests with her sultry demeanor and revealing gowns, she gradually works her way through the lot of them, managing to lure them to various inventive deaths one after another, all of which are themed around each of the characters various sinful leanings (greed, lust, etc). Only a priest seems able to resisit the charms of the mystery woman...will he be able to break the terrible curse?

Yes I know that plot sounds like it could have been somehow worked into a stylish and shocking gothic horror, but something vital is really missing from this effort. I think it's down to a general lack of polish and care, and attention to laying down any sort of atmosphere. The castle where all the main action takes place is a stunning building on the oustide, but the interior is not nearly as impressive - especially the bedrooms that the guests are shown to, they are kitted out in the most appalling over-fussy floral decor, each one more hideous than the last. There's little sense of art direction, especially in hilariously bad scenes when the characters are supposed to be creeping around looking for a way out of the castle in nothing but candlelight, whereas in fact all these scens are visibly and harshly over-lit with industrial arc-lighting! The continuation and photography is also very poor with a great deal of obvious inconsistencies in the brightness of the sky outside. The English dubbing is also very, very bad. It makes a mockery of all the acting, although even good dubbing would not save the actor playing the priest, who gives the blandest, most wooden performance I have ever seen, almost single-handedly dragging what little tension there is towards the film's climax into the gutter.

On the plus side, Erika Blanc makes for a pretty dashing succubus, with her appearance altering to a pale, skeletal fright-face every time she is about her killing business. She also manages to pull off some very weird and wonderful contortions which verge on the pantomime, but luckily fall on just the right side of creepy. But the death scenes are all very cheaply handled and laughably unlikely. The behaviour of the guests is never anything less than totally vapid, even when faced with obvious danger. And to my total non-surprise (this being a European horror film from the 1970's), there's also a totally gratuitous lesbian sex scene that goes completely nowhere plot-wise...oh well, at least all the women in this film are very attractive so for those that want to see topless beauties doing the business, there's a small helping of that just for you. For anyone who is interested in plot, gothic atmosphere or just plain horror, this films serves up such thin helpings of each of those that it's really not worth the effort.

I'm sorry to be negative, and I was disappointed myself, but aside from Erica Blanc in what is probably her most memorable horror appearance, there's barely anything memorable in this.
