Tough but moving, Thunderheart is an unusual story about an arrogant FBI agent (Val Kilmer) who participates in a federal investigation of a murder on an Oglala Sioux reservation. Kilmer's character is part Sioux himself, a detail that leaves him cold as he sets about pushing his way through the community to find facts on the case. In time, however, he begins to feel an ethnic tug and grows increasingly sympathetic to the locals and hostile toward his fellow G-men, much to the dismay of his agency mentor (Sam Shepard). The script is based on real events that occurred on the Pine Ridge Reservation in 1975 in South Dakota (involving an armed standoff between Indian activists and the FBI, an event that prompted Thunderheart director Michael Apted to make a companion documentary, Incident at Oglala). The conclusion of Thunderheart feels like politically charged whimsy, but the real strength of the film is Kilmer's outstanding performance as a man in transformation. Apted's clear-eyed depiction of the Sioux's spiritual and cultural continuity with the past has none of the cloying romanticism of other films about Indians. Produced by Robert De Niro. --Tom Keogh

Val Kilmer did an excellent job in this movie. It kept my attention throughout. Graham Green was great as always as he was in the movie Dances With Wolves. It had drama, action and fulfillment. As I am part Native American I have always been saddened at the way the American Indian has been portrayed through the years. This movie shows how many of them live and how they were and are taken advantage of by not only the white man but by their own people. I liked the ending though. Grandpa knew what was up and did a number on the FBI agents. I loved it. As Thunderheart (Val Kilmer) sat in his car at the crossroad, you wonder what will he do, now that he has reached back to his roots? All in all, I loved the movie and would highly recommend it to any that loves a good drama.

Best Tony Hillerman Ever Filmed!?!.......2007-04-14

Although not actually a story by Hillerman Thunder Heart is the perfect marriage of Mystery and Mysticism that has yet to fully translate to either the Silver or Small screen for an actual Hillerman Novel. Why is this? The bottom line I believe is Val Kilmer. Kilmer's cultural transformation is compelling from this initial arrival to his Last Stand.

Real life drama.......2007-03-09

This movie is a great movie. Val Kilmer plays his part excellently. I watch this movie over and over again. Definately a favorite of mine. A must see!

This is the best family-type film dealing with the sometimes controversial subject of bullfighting. The photography, score and story are all first class even though some parts seem dated from a 2006 perspective. Well worth having in your video library.

The Brave One was beautifully crafted in 1957 by blacklisted author Robert Rich and immediately established itself as a superb classic. The tale is of a small Mexican boy and his enduring love for his courageous pet bull. Set in Mexico, a boy discovers a cow has been killed after delivering and orphaning a male offspring. Naming the calf Gitano, The boy becomes it's friend and caretaker. Realizing the boy's loneliness, the parents encourage the bond, but fail to emphasis the eventual fate of the animal. Throughout the Calf's life the boy's love inexorably grows unaware of his parent's financial responsibility to the bull's true owner. By the time the animal has grown to market size and becomes a cash commodity, the boy's parents are torn between their son's love and their duty to the Patrone. Using subterfuge, the parents separate the two. Returning from a fool's errand, the boy discovers his best friend and lifetime companion has been sold for the purpose of bull fighting and its eventual destruction. Despite the frantic warnings of his parents that it's too late to save the animal, the small boy adroitly played by Michel Rey, sets off to save his courageous friend from certain death. The boy visits everyone from the Patrone to the Governnor of Mexico in a vain attempt to alter the fate of his pet. The film culminates with the boy's magnificent bravery before an arena filled with spectators. True loyalty to any animal has never had a more poignant test of love and courage. Earnest, Disney-like film about a boy who tries to save his bull from the matador's ring in Mexico City. The ride atop an old farm truck into Mexico City is a beautiful scene suggesting a "Wizard of Oz" affection and the only drawback is the kid's unremarkable ability to show expressions of joy, sadness, excitement, etc., as the camera focuses in on his face. The bull makes for a unique, likeable hero. The film won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay of 1956.

This film is spectacular. Howard and Foster are great throughout, and there is never a dull moment. This is not just some revenge film, it actually has a great deal of substance and intelligent dialogue within. I do believe critics are biased because many of them come from New York. Just like the Yankees in baseball, if it comes from New York, it is untouchable in their eyes. New York has its share of problems, like anywhere else in the world. And if the critics don't want to acknowledge the presence of crime everywhere and the police's lack of ability to control it due to all the lawyers out there (it is the lawyers who are destroying our country, not Bush, not Hillary, not politicians), it is just plain blindness. Anyone who has ever had a crime committed against them will love the revenge part, but this film is much deeper than that. And Howard and Foster act so well that it makes up for any shortcomings in the credibility department anyway.

i really liked this, i feel her best movies were nell, silance of the lambs and this, i liked others but i feel those were top 3. i dotn knwoif this be movi of year but if they had a top 10 atress i'd put her up there. parts, not all but parts of this reminded me of charlese therems "MONster" 2005. there were a few seens people though she was hooker and like monster she was and she kileljust about every man that approched her,, and again parts not all bu parts mad e me think of that a little bit but i felt it was pretty good plot. i liked this more than kevn bacons death sentance i didn't dis like his but felt this was better or even kevin costers mr brooks theya ll 3 involved killing or such i liked this the bet so far

The Stranger Within Comes Out.......2007-09-14

Prior to seeing The Brave One, I saw a lot of preconceived opinions that the movie would be Deathwish 2007...a la Jodie Foster. And that's not too far off plotwise.

We all know what happened in 1974's Deathwish, right? In Death Wish some hoodlums put the hurt on Charles Bronson's family and Bronson goes Medieval on New York City's bad guys with a roll of quarters in a sock and a gun.

Well Death Wish didn't win any big awards, but it was certainly a cult classic that holds up to this day. On the other hand, I wouldn't be surprised to see Jodie Foster nab a nomination (from the MTV Movie Awards at minimum) for her role as Paul Kersey...er...um...I mean Erica "Pain" Bain.

Foster really is a great actress and she makes you feel the agony that she is going through after the loss of a loved one. She also does an A-list job of taking a personality from Princess Leia to The Dark Side of the Force.

Terrence Howard (who's in more movies in 2007 & 2008 than anyone I think) plays a cool, enjoyable to watch detective with his own mini side-story. But the key is that all of the side stories--and there really aren't that many--take a back seat to the primary script. The script that drew so many to the simple concept of Death Wish. The vigilante on the loose.

The story is well-told and focuses on Foster's acts of retribution as much as the moral dilemma of being brutally violated, then taking severe action against the violating crowd, but questioning yourself and being questioned by the public for your response to the original attack committed against you (Hey, remind you any current events?).

Director Neil Jordan keeps the action real enough in The Brave One so as to make you think you've got a window into something-that-is-really-happening. There are a couple of over the top sequences...especially in the last 15 or so minutes...but otherwise, the emotion, suspense and tense situations will keep you in your seat and thoroughly entertained for its full 2 hour runtime.

The Brave One was definitely worth the trip off the couch and out to the theater. It will be for you too.

Death Wish Meets Taxi Driver.......2007-09-16

I enjoyed The Brave One more than I thought I would. The plot is familiar, but the acting really elevates it above the average film it is. Jodie Foster turns in her best performance in quite some time and Terrence Howards is very good as well. It took me a while to get into the film, but once it got a hold of me it didn't let go. You will feel as abused as Jodie Foster's character by the time the credits role. A worthy DVD rental for sure, but you may want to pass seeing it in theaters.

"The Brave One" is great! The cast led by Jodie Foster (as Erica Bain) and Terrence Howard (as Detective Mercer) is excellent! The directing by Neil Jordan (who also directed "The End Of The Affair" (1999), "In Dreams" (1999), "Michael Collins" (1996), "Interview With The Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles" (1994), & "The Crying Game" (1992) is excellent! The story by Roderick Taylor & Bruce A. Taylor and the screenplay by both Taylors & Cynthia Mort is excellent! The music by Dario Marianelli (who also did the music to the upcoming "Atonement" (2007) is excellent! The cinematography by Philippe Rousselot (who also did the cinematography to the upcoming "Lions For Lambs" (2007) & "Interview With The Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles") is excellent! The film editing by Tony Lawson (who also been working with Jordan since "Michael Collins") is great. The casting by Laura Rosenthal (who also did the casting to the upcoming "I'm Not There" (2007) is excellent! The production design by Kristi Zea (who also did the production design to "The Departed" (2006) & "The Silence Of The Lambs" (1991), which also starred Foster) is excellent! The art direction by Robert Guerra (who also did the art direction to "The Good Shepherd" (2006) is excellent! The set decoration by Lydia Marks (who also doing the upcoming "Sex And The City" movie (2008) is excellent! The costume design by Catherine Marie Thomas (who also did the costume design to "Kill Bill Volume 1" (2003) & "Vol. 2" (2004) is excellent! This is an intense suspense-thriller that will keep you thinking and keep you on the edge of your seat.

i feel her top 3 movies are silance of lambs, the brave one, nell. part of this, not all, but parts reminded me of charlese therem in moster boht of them wer on a killing srpee when it started out a self difene or in this case she watned justic one the one who kiled her man but she was on killing sree like charlese therem was, iliked this more than kevin bacons death sentance, i didnt dis like that just i liked this one better. i liked kevin costners mr brooks but still liked this better. not movie of year but i fele she shold of been at least nomited for acting or something

The Bored One...........2007-09-15

Thats what I was when I saw this. Zzzzzzzz is all I can say. I saw this with my friends earlier this evening and we could barely sit through this mess. Terrence Howard's acting was mediocre and Jodie Foster's performance was as if she was in some kind of coma. Naveen Andrew's (Lost) role was just irrelevant and I could not see the point. And to top it all off, Jodie Foster's hair stylist should be locked up for giving her that horrendous haircut. She looked like Alex P. Keaton from Family Ties with those atrocious choppy locks. Can anyone say Fantastic Sam's? Tired acting, predictable plot, and horrid lighting make this film into a snoozer. Skip this one and save your $8.00 bucks for a lovely T-shirt.

Wonderful movie, not what you expect.......2007-09-15

I am not always a Jodie Foster fan, but like many of her latest movies including The Panic Room, Flight Plan, and Brave One. This is among my favorite movies of 2007 and we go to the movies quite often. We saw Live Free, Die Hard twice and will probably see this one again next week as well. The previews for this movie show quite a bit of what happens, but out of sequence. As a result, the movie is not quite what you expect, but much better. I absolutely loved the ending which had a great twist and I loved that dog. Can't say more without giving away the ending, but if you've ever been a victim of violence, this movie will touch you. It rings very true to exactly how victims of violence feel when their life is never the same again.

If you know someone who is a victim of violence and are trying to help them cope, this is an excellent primer for what they're going through. Nowadays, too many reality shows make everyone "fake" actually being victims. This is the real deal. I hope she gets an Oscar nod. She certainly deserves it.

I have one last thing to say and it surprises me even that I'm saying it. I had low expectations for Terence Howard and yet he impressed our whole family by acting almost as good as Foster. I loved his eyes as well and wondered if they were naturally blue or if he was wearing contact lenses. He could certainly give Denzel Washington a run for his money. I hope he is cast in many more films.

MANTIS FISTS ALONE IS WORTH THE PURCHASE!.......2005-04-12

Let me just say that Mantis Fists Tiger Claws is a brilliant
movie! I love how they mix slasher horror films with a typical
revenge kung fu movie! This movie took me off guard cuz I
thought this was gonna be a typical kung fu movie but after
seeing the final fight between this guy and a human praying
mantis, I was thrilled! Mantis Fists is original with a ton of
rape scenes (particulary on this one chick, poor girl) and with
some pretty good kung fu and alot of weird weapons! Oh and the movie is subtitled in French!

Duel of the Brave Ones is a typical modern day kung fu movie!
need I say more! I really don't like modern day kung fu films
cuz it just seems uninteresting to me! But this movie has nudity
so that will make you happy!

In the end: WORTH IT FOR MANTIS FISTS ALONE! It's a rare find
and well worth the $10. Stupid Mantis Fist guy you're no student
of mantis fist so you can go and die!

Two of the worst movies I've ever seen.......2002-05-25

Being a student of praying mantis kung fu, I HAD to buy this movie. I mean, how bad could it be? No matter what the quality, there would definitely be some good kung fu practitioners in this somewhat esoteric style, right? WRONG. The fighting is bad, sound is bad, filming is bad, quality of the DVD and its source (looks like a 10th generation video copy) is bad, the story is impossible to follow. There are two unnecessarily explicit partial-nudity rape scenes, and gratuitous gore throughout. I give it at least 1 star, because it's so bad it's hilarious at times. If you can stay awake. At the end, the horrible and super-deadly mysterious predator is revealed--someone hopping around in a furry green mantis suit with big scary mantis claws for hands. Unless you're a fan of campy, trashy kung fu and/or horror movies, don't bother. I took mine back for a refund. I can't review "Duel of the Brave Ones" because it was so bad I couldn't even watch it. Basically a cheesy 70's Honk Kong gangster streetfighting flick. In a genre known for its bad acting, writing, directing and filming, these 2 are the bottom of the barrel.

Super rare films in one package!.......2002-04-07

First off,the quality of the ultra rare Mantis Fists and Tiger Claws is not very good.It apparently is the only existing print left of this film,so what can we do?I would complain but the price is so low,that it's well worth buying.The movie is wild to say the least.A woman gets raped by a mantis(!)and her daughter turns into a mantis kung fu monster.Need I say more?The second feature is with the same cast and has great action.Get a bag of snacks and enjoy!
