Halloween is as pure and undiluted as its title. In the small town of Haddonfield, Illinois, a teenage baby sitter tries to survive a Halloween night of relentless terror, during which a knife-wielding maniac goes after the town's hormonally charged youths. Director John Carpenter takes this simple situation and orchestrates a superbly mounted symphony of horrors. It's a movie much scarier for its dark spaces and ominous camera movements than for its explicit bloodletting (which is actually minimal). Composed by Carpenter himself, the movie's freaky music sets the tone; and his script (cowritten with Debra Hill) is laced with references to other horror pictures, especially Psycho. The baby sitter is played by Jamie Lee Curtis, the real-life daughter of Psycho victim Janet Leigh; and the obsessed policeman played by Donald Pleasence is named Sam Loomis, after John Gavin's character in Psycho. In the end, though, Halloween stands on its own as an uncannily frightening experience--it's one of those movies that had audiences literally jumping out of their seats and shouting at the screen. ("No! Don't drop that knife!") Produced on a low budget, the picture turned a monster profit, and spawned many sequels, none of which approached the 1978 original. Curtis returned for two more installments: 1981's dismal Halloween II, which picked up the story the day after the unfortunate events, and 1998's occasionally gripping Halloween H20, which proved the former baby sitter was still haunted after 20 years. --Robert Horton

5 out of 5 stars You can't kill damnation mister!.......2007-09-13

I have always been a fan of the Halloween movie series. The original was w/o a doubt a true classic and masterpiece!

I recently saw Rob Zombie's version and was pleasantly surprised that it was pretty good. The Halloween series is the only horror series that I believe had a good story line.

Was that the Boogeyman? As a matter fact it was.

5 out of 5 stars Who's the one that let Rob Zombie get his hands on THIS?! .......2007-09-09

Ah, that little Tommy Doyle. If only more people listened to him about the reality of the Boogeyman.

Who's the Boogeyman in this horror classic? Two words: Michael Myers. No, not the comedian. Someone better, someone more sick and sadistic.

Granted, this is a horror movie, with the occasional nudity. So what makes this stand out and become the building block of modern horror movies? The execution.

The story is well known. Myers kills his sister and is sent away to Smith Grove for fifteen years. Dr. Loomis has been treating him and is perplexed with Myers. "He hasn't said a word in fifteen years," Loomis professes. "...the devil's eyes."

Myers' is on a war path, taking out any pubescent and overly sexed up teen that is in his way. Why? To find his sister, Laurie Strode, played by the amazing Jamie Lee Curtis who can effortlessly command a stage.

What's great about this classic is that it doesn't rely on gore but the element of surprise. The fact that Myers is an enigma, with no actually reason to kill his prey. Is it for the hunt? Is it for the way he was treated as a child? We don't know, and quite frankly it is best we don't. Do we really want to sympathize with someone who just stabbed someone into a wall? No.

The movie is directed in a dim lighting as well, which adds more chills up and down the spine. The score is also timeless; a simple piano with each key the suspense picks up. A movie like Halloween is art in it's rarest form. It flows beautifully; the pace of the movie; the story; the suspense; and finally; the war between the two siblings.

It's not actually a "war." Just a slight slice around the arm, a coat hanger to an eye. But what's great is that it is left on a cliffhanger. Myers shot off a balcony only to be on the run for the sequel.

It was really a shame that Rob Zombie has ruined this classic. Turning his biological mother and father, who were decent human beings into a prostitute and a worthless couch potato was just insulting. Well, at least Myers has a new victim to kill...Zombie! And we have an awesome horror movie to cherish the moment in!

2 out of 5 stars Puts the Horror in HORRIABLE.......2007-09-07

"What??? He gave this classic masterpiece 2 stars?!?" Is that whats racing through your so called brain? This film has been heralded as great horror, but its nearly as stupid, boring, and insulting to one's intelligence as some of todays worse slasher movies. This original version of the movie, unlike the Excorcist, does not stand the test of time. And why is that? Well, i hear time and time again, that this movie is a such a great essential classic. Being essential and classic doesnt apparently mean its truly great, becouse the acting is very bad in this movie. The script is dumb and the characters arent interesting or likeable. Its not as annoying and insulting as something like Halloween:Ressurection. ( a zero star movie) but its certainly NOT the great film its touted to be. And we hear "CLASSIC MASTERPIECE" over and over again in the same sentence as the title. But i honestly feel the people caling it that are just stuck on the fact that its suppost to be this "great classic" and dont or refuse to see it for what it is...a B-movie. Maybe it got popular becouse of the fact that in the late 70s, a movie with a killer in a mask like that, killing kids and people with a butcher knife was kind of a fresh idea. But as a movie, you cant deny how poor it is. It might be a classic old horror movie that sparked lots of trends, but this is NOT deserving of the word " MASTERPIECE ". Thats a complete lie. But people and critics keep saying it and saying it, but their words dont have meaning becouse it doesnt match up with the movie. The genre of "HORROR/SLASHER" movies hasnt been the most respected or acclaimed genres out there, to say the least. And i suppose within the relm of the endless sea of stupid gore fest slasher films, this must be the Father of them all and so its reveared as such a 'great' thing. But if you see it as a film, its not very good, and you dont even have to be some purist film critic snob. Anyone can see that fact. The music, the resounding piano theme is memorable and is classic. The legend that has become Michael Myers through out the years has grown beyond the depiction found in the original film. Michael Myers is not very impressive at all in this movie. He sounds allmost like an ape, how he breathes through the mask. And he just seems like he is mentally handicapped more than he is psychotic. And the 'teens' in this movie all look like they are allmost 30, like they should be outta college or something. Not convincing AT ALL as highschool kids. But all that is just side complaints. The movie itself is just boring, and i had to force myself almost to watch it in its entirity and give it a proper chance before i made final judgment of it. The image of Michael Myers and his theme music is what is truly legendary and haunting to this day....Not this film. Despite the 'popular critics' view, the recently re-telling of the film, directed by Rob Zombie, titled "HALLOWEEN". is far more superior film, that brings actual weight and respect to that legendary killer...MICHAEL MYERS. Out of respect for John Carpenter and his original film, watch this original movie made in 1978. But FIRST, if you have a choice for which to see first, id say see the Rob Zombie re-telling of "HALLOWEEN", first, that is a deep, emotional, and truly horrific piece of work, that captures the sheer intensity of what became the legend of Michael Myers that rises above and beyond the original, while stil giving it much respect. Rob Zombie delivers something awesome that truly and finally lives up to such a haunting legend...something neither the orginal or ANY of the sequals have EVER done, nor could do. Im no fancy critic, but im giving this 2 and half stars...the half is for its originality at the time, with its theme and character.

5 out of 5 stars the REAL Halloween.......2007-09-02

I recently got back from the worst remake and probably movie ever made, Rob Zombie's Halloween. After about twenty minutes or so of that movie, I longed for this movie. Everything in this movie was perfect: The score, the actors and actresses, the setting seemed like a real home town, the gore was minuim but effective, and the story was good. There is no reason on Earth that anyone would hate this movie. If you prefer the other film over this classic, then you need to grow up.

halloween was and still is the movie everyone remembers and still talks about. enough said, john carpenter made you cringe and always look behind you with this one. he made babysitters all over the world lock their doors and keep a constant eye looking out the window. he made the boogyman real. this is a masterpiece. i'm hooked on this psychotic killer who just never dies. you can't kill evil, it just keeps on coming. and jaimie lee curtis, her breakout role, made a name for herself, great actress she has mad skills. this film is different from todays films but it still manages to scare you. you don't want to be alone, because he'll find you.

5 out of 5 stars Death has come to your little town..........2007-09-09

Once Halloween was Samhain, the one night of the year when the dead returned to cause trouble for the living.

Well, Michael Myers wasn't dead, but on "Halloween" he returned to cause trouble for the people of his hometown, with all its dark houses and teenage victims. And John Carpenter's masterpiece lives up to its reputation: creepy, eerie, harrowing, and full of solid acting from Donald Pleasance and Jamie Lee Curtis.

On Halloween, 1963, young Michael Myers lurked outside the house while his sister had sex with her boyfriend. After he left, Michael put on a mask, picked up a knife, and stabbed his sister to death.

Fifteen years later, Dr. Loomis (Donald Pleasence) is about to take Myers to a legal hearing, when Myers (Nick Castle) breaks open the psych hospital and escapes in Loomis' car. On Halloween, teenage Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) notices a silent, masked figure popping up and disappearing near her school, house, and neighborhood.

Despite this, she goes about her babysitting duties, even taking care of another girl's charge overnight. The only problem is, the girl is dead, and so is another pal and her boyfriend. Dr. Loomis is staking out Myers' old home, unaware that Myers is now prowling the house where Laurie is staying -- and there seems to be no way to avoid the knife-wielding "evil."

It sounds like a thousand knockoff movies made since then, but "Halloween" formed the original mold. And like any other groundbreaker, it is the most stripped-down, intense example of the genre -- little gore, little graphic violence, but the way it's handled is enough to make your hair stand on end, and make you go to bed with a gun under your pillow.

And Carpenter handles the spookiness beautifully -- initially, the story is pleasantly average -- teen gossip, small-town atmosphere, and chatter about boyfriends, dances and babysitting. It has the occasional spooky moment -- such as Myers popping out of a hedge to stare at Laurie -- but isn't really scary just yet. But as Myers starts bumping off teenagers, the plot darkens and twists.

Carpenter spins up a claustrophobic, trapped feeling, partly due to a shadowy old house full of windows and doors, any of which could be Myers' way in. You can't help but jump with every shadow. And Carpenter sprinkles the plot with unspeakably creepy moments -- Myers quietly slithering in a window above Laurie, or dressing as a ghost with only his heavy breathing to identify him.

Curtis was the original scream queen thanks to this movie, and she does an amazing job -- even when she's racing around pounding on doors and shrieking, she seems realistic. Pleasance is just as good as Loomis, who is determined and full of dread at what his patient is, but also has his moments of humour (like when he frightens some pranksters at the Myers house). And though we only see Myers' face a few times, his masked face, silent movements and heavy breathing are the stuff of nightmare.

"Halloween" was a more psychological, atmospheric kind of horror, and it did its job almost too well. The original slasher movie -- harrowing, eerie, and petrifying.

5 out of 5 stars Will this have the correct color timing...?!?!?!.......2007-08-26

The 1999 DVD release by Anchor Bay, (now Starz) had a Dean Cundey (cinematographer) supervised tranfer.
Halloween was shot in the summer in California where it hardly looks like fall in the midwest. Cundey had the film (and the 1999 DVD) color timed to look more "fall like" and to have creepy VERY blue light in the night scenes. The Divimax release from a few years back had a much sharper picture BUT the incorrect color timing. Suddenly, "Halloween" looked like summer in Cali. instead of fall in the midwest and much of the creepy blue light in the nightscenes was gone. MUCH less effective.

Question now, will this new BD have the correct color timing or will it just be the HD transfer they did for the Divimax DVD...?

Before Kevin Smith became a Hollywood darling with Chasing Amy, a film he wrote and directed, he made this $27,000 comedy about real-life experiences working for chump change at a New Jersey convenience store. A rude, foul-mouthed collection of anecdotes about the responsibilities that go with being on the wrong side of the till, the film is also a relationship story that takes some hilarious turns once the lovers start revealing their sexual histories to one another. In the best tradition of first-time, ultra-low budget independent films, Smith uses Clerks as an audition piece, demonstrating that he not only can handle two-character comedy but also has an eye for action--as proven in a smoothly handled rooftop hockey scene. Smith himself appears as a silent figure who hangs out on the fringes of the store's property. --Tom Keogh

If a single day in the life of a small convenience store clerk seems like a good idea for a movie, you need to watch clerks. if it doesnt, then you need to watch it anyway. Clerks was Kevin Smiths first movie, but it takes place second in the timeline of the "New Jersey Cronicles" just a few days after the events of Mallrats.

Clerks was filmed in black and white with a $27000 budget, but dont let that steer you away. the low budget adds some sense of charm to the movie i havent found in many others. the black and white adds a sense of artsiness to the cheap film style. its mostly a series of long conversations between the main character working at the quick stop randall next door at the video store. the conversations run everywhere from the contractors who built the Death Star to what they're going to do with the rest of their lives to a lot funny sex talk that has probably offended lots of people since its release.

Jay and Silent Bob made their first appearance in Clerks and have consequently been in every othet movie of the cronicles (mallrats, chasing amy, dogma, jay and silent bob strike back, clerks 2)

The Clerks X 3 disk DVD set is a great deal with TONS of bonus features. there is an hour and a half documentary of Kevin Smith's life leading up to the release of Clerks. There is a director's cut version of the film *SPOILER* where Dante actually gets shot and killed in the end. there's a lot of deleted scenes. there's 2 or 3 different commentaries for the movie. there's the original auditions from all the main characters.

this is a great movie in a great collection full of special features.

5 out of 5 stars 37?.......2007-08-16

For all of those that have seen this movie know exactly what I'm talking about. The introduction to the ViewAskewniverse. Kevin Smith brings us into his world with this clever comedy.

Expoloding on the scene the same year as Pulp Fiction many people may not realize just how much Clerks has added to pop culture. One of the best independent films to date.

And the DVD is wonderful. There's the very interesting commentary, the beavy of deleted scenes, an alternate ending, and even a music video which, ironically, is done in color.

This is a film to love, laugh, and just outright have a good time. It indeed gets my recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars For the penultimate Clerks / Kevin Smith fan.......2007-08-14

This cut of Kevin Smith's debut contains a handful of extra or extended scenes along with a different ending. All of it adding something to the released version from 1994. For me however the joy of this edition is the documentary about the making of Clerks. Clips of the casting sessions with the actors, stories about Kevin & longtime collaborative partner in crime Scott Mosier in the earliest days of being mates at film school, Bob Hawk talking about first seeing the film etc... this stuff was great.

Know that I'm a huge Smith fan and sort of lock-step buy anything with his name on it. Curse you showtime for not green lighting Man Child!

4 out of 5 stars MORE THAN JUST A COMEDY, IT'S A STATEMENT ABOUT LIFE!.......2007-07-25

This movie is so near and dear to my heart. It seems to capture the different elements of my life all wraped up in one.
As the movie starts, we see the main character DANTE roll out of bed to answer the phone. The owner of the QUICK STOP can't make it in to open, so he has called the ever reliable DANTE to open. We learn that DANTE is not very assertive, somewhat uptight, and high strung, but also an all around good guy. Once he opens the store, We are introduce to his girl, VERONICA. Through there conversation, we learn she cares alot about DANTE and wants him to do something with his life. After a lengthy conversation about a certain sex act, we are introduced to the movies comic relief, JAY AND SILENT BOB(BOB played by KEVIN SMITH). They are just a bunch of wild party animals who are just out to smoke some dope and have some fun. After an amusing scene with JAY, we are introduced to RANDALL, DANTE'S smartass co-worker who doesn't seem to care about anything or take anything seriously. Throughout the movie, uptight DANTE is trying to figure out what he wants to do with his life(and figure out if he wants a relationship with VERONICA or his old flame KATELYNN). RANDALL serves as the anchor, keeping it 'real' when DANTE'S diatribes about life get a little out of hand. All this while dealing with CRAZY and BIZZARE situations, and taking in a days worth of customers.
When this movie came out, I had recently turned 18 and was just starting to get used to the 'real' world. The reason I identify with this movie is when I ws a teenager, I was just like JAY, ALL ABOUT THE PARTY!! Once I turned 18, I became, like DANTE, the very serious(when it came to work) straight laced type. After a few years of working in the public service industry, I became somewhat burned out, like RANDALL, and developed an irreverant, smartass attitude to all the people I had to deal with.
This movie is about becoming an adult and not knowing what you want to do with your life, witch is something I, and I suspect many other people, know ALOT about.
The reason I gave it four stars is because although I LOVE this movie, It is very rough around the edges. You can tell by the camera work that KEVIN SMITH only had one or two cameras to work with. In addition, this movie is notorious for taking a joke well past its point(the asian design major, for example).
To sum it up: If your a fan of real-life comedy drama that has something to say, YOU WILL LOVE CLERKS!!!

4 out of 5 stars Such a great value........2007-06-15

If you love, like, or kinda dig kevin smith films, or just his style of film making, this edition of clerks is a great buy. They cover almost every aspect of the films making, even listing expenses at one point. talking about cast disagreements, and all with the kevin smith tongue in cheek style. I am glad I bought it.

This charming update of Pygmalion (by way of the John Hughes oeuvre, most notably Pretty in Pink) rode the crest of the late-'90s wave of immensely popular teen films (Varsity Blues, etc.), thanks primarily to the immense charisma of its two leads, Freddie Prinze Jr. and Rachael Leigh Cook. When school star Zach (Prinze)--who's a jock, smart, and popular--gets dumped by vacuous Taylor (Jodi Lyn O'Keefe) after spring break, he's left dateless for the all-important prom. With a little goading from his less-than-sensitive best friend (hunky Paul Walker), he bets that he can make any girl into prom queen a mere eight weeks before the dance. The object of their wager: misfit Laney (Cook), a gawky art student too busy with her paintings and taking care of her brother and dad to worry about school politics. However, after a couple looks from Zach, and a few dates that reveal him to be a hunk of substance, Laney's armor begins to melt--and her stock at school soars. Soon enough, she's the lone candidate for prom queen against the bitchy and relentless Taylor.

What elevates She's All That above the realm of standard teen fare is its mixture of good-natured fairy-tale romance and surprisingly clear-eyed view of high school social strata. The lines of class are demarcated as clearly as if in a Jane Austen novel, but the satire is equally deflating and affectionate. Sure, high school could be bad sometimes, but it was lots of fun too; this is a movie good-natured enough to take time out for an extended hip-hop dance number at the prom. Director Robert Iscove (who also helmed the Brandy-starring TV adaptation of Cinderella) has also assembled a great young cast, including a scene-stealing Anna Paquin as Zach's no-nonsense sister, Kieran Culkin as Laney's geeky brother, and a stupidly goofy Matthew Lillard as a Real World cast member whose arrival shakes things up a little too much. And amidst all the comedy and prom drama, you'd be hard-pressed to find two teen stars as talented, attractive, and appealing as Prinze and Cook. Prinze is an approachable and sensitive jock, though it's Cook who's the true star, investing Laney with confidence, humor, and heart. Like Zach, you'll be hard-pressed not to fall in love with her. By the story's end, both Cook and the film will have charmed the socks off of you. --Mark Englehart

3 out of 5 stars Post grunge My Fair Lady.......2007-06-19

I'd like to think that I am smarter than to watch teen movies, as I haven't been one in a long time. And yet, even the stiffest, most serious of intellectuals such as myself want a little trash now and then so we don't have to think too hard. This was not bad, not bad at all.

This modern day update of Pygmailion / My Fair Lady takes us to a California high school. It's almost the end of the year, and the senior class is getting ready for their end of the year, pre graduation antics. Among them is Laney, the Eliza Doolittle, off in her artistic corner sulking away while the popular kids are off doing things that popular kids do. Freddie Prince Jr, in one of his many leading man roles in teen movies, is the most popular guy in school who has been thrown a sudden curveball. His girlfriend, Taylor, suddenly drops him after going down to Florida for spring break and falling into a hopeless (and I do mean hopeless) affair with Matt Lillard, "star" of the latest season of The Real World on MTV. His friends comfort, but say that he can find another date for the prom just as quickly. They bet him that they can not only find him another woman, but based on his good looks, charm and popularity he can take a lost cause and make her just as A List as he is. They single out Laney, and the chase is on.

A few things put me off about this movie. Firstly, this wasn't a new story (it's Pygmalion / My Fair Lady, like I said). Secondly, it is possible that people really are mindless sheep enough to go along with something once a person in power says to do it, as eventually Laney will not be tarred and feathered once Zach starts bringing her to parties out of her area. Third, if Zach really was such a nice guy (which he seems to be), I have a hard time believing that someone like him would be with a shrew like Taylor to begin with. Looking back, I realize that a lot of the popular kids got their ways with people by making them look bad before others (like when Taylor pours her drink down Laney's dress), and Zach seems too good to do something like that to someone. And fourth, Laney was hot underneith all those ugly clothes and hostile attitude, you could tell through those overalls and thick glasses. Naturally if and when she got dolled up, she would be all she could be rather than look like an ogre in a dress.

It's nice, light entertainment. Have fun with it on a rainy afternoon.

5 out of 5 stars Very good lighted hearted film.......2006-11-12

I like films that are funny and cheerful nothing drab and sad. Something to make you smile and laugh.

4 out of 5 stars She's A Winner.......2006-09-19

I was expecting a predictable teen movie rife with cliche and populated with vapid, albeit good looking, young actors. Was I ever wrong! "She's All That" is a real charmer. It offers cogent insights into teen life and is not without it's tender moments. It's ultimate message, that true change is not cosmetic but comes from within, does not come off as forced or cynical. The cast is quite appealing. Special kudos go to Rachel Leigh Cook as Laney, the "ugly duckling". Cook makes Laney's transformation believable and subtle. Matthew Lillard also has a show-stopping turn as an obnoxious MTV reality show reject. Look quick for Sarah Michelle Gellar in a cafeteria scene.

1 out of 5 stars Soooooooooooo bad.......2006-08-29

Teens don't talk like that. I rip off of 16 candles and so utterly cliched that it felt like a parody.

2 out of 5 stars Laney Boggs was robbed..........2006-06-11

I first saw this movie in high school-I believe i was a senior-And I remember thinking, "High school is NOT like this at all!" Throughout the whole movie. Now, I do understand that this is a fictional movie and therefore it is set in a fictional world, where anything is possible (except Laney Boggs becoming Prom Queen of course), but I felt like this movie was so far out into la la land with it's premise and execution that it was hard to really relate or like any of the characters in the movie. First of all, why do movies always have to over-exagerate the bitchiness of a Prom Queen??? In my school, the Homecoming Court and Prom Court were chock full of nice, friendly kids, and the ones who took home the crowns were voted on because of there personalities, not because they were HOT like Taylor Vaugh or whatever her name was. I hate that stereotype because it doesn't relate to any school-at least any school in the midwest! Also, What was so terribly heinous about Rachel Lee Cook that they would pick her over ANY other girl in the school-So what if she wore ugly clothes and had big glasses-the girl has a killer face and a tiny little body...her only flaw was her love for being a loner. Freddy Prinze Jr. was at his peak in this movie though-he seems to have gone WAYYYYYYY downhill since this movie was released. The best part about this movie is the cheesy makeover sequence when Laney walks down the stairs to Sixpence None The Richer's song KISS ME. The BIGGEST let down of this movie to me though was that Taylor won Prom Queen over Laney. Seriously, that still pisses me off to this day. The ending was just a complete and utter bomb...I wanted that skank Taylor to lose and cry or get totally laughed at or at least have had SOME minor bad thing happen to her. She was just a horrible, snotty witch and nothing bad seemed to happen to her. Oh well, this movie is pretty lame...I will always remember it though because I saw it in the theater with three of my close friends our senior year. Cheesy movie...Laney Boggs was robbed!!!

5 out of 5 stars Step aside XANADU...move over GLITTER....Because YOU CAN'T STOP THE MUSIC!.......2007-09-03

Steve Guttenberg plays a composer who decides that if he can't make it in show biz, it's "back to dental school" (which is, in real life, where Guttenberg came from). Valerie Perrine, portraying "the Garbo of models," offers to wander around Manhattan to round up singers who can do justice to Guttenberg's songs, and starts her search by "going for a Baskin-Robbins rush" --- thus blaming sugar for her selection of the Village People as this movie's stars of tomorrow (the only other guilty party besides sugar might be producer Allan Carr).

This late '70s disco group made up of chorus boy types had only one gimmick: They decked themselves out in fantasy "macho" regalia --- one as a cop, another as a cowboy, plus a construction worker, a G.I., a leather-wrapped bad boy, and yes, an Indian. Model agency magnate Tammy Grimes puts it succinctly when she growls, "There's really no accounting for taste."

With a basso profundo voice that makes her sound like a drag queen, Grimes acts like one when she eyes Bruce Jenner: "Fruit-of-the-Loom is doing a big ad campaign, and something tells me you could really fit into a pair of jockey shorts." (He's soon stripped to his boxers, with both Perrine and Guttenberg on their knees in front of him --- you don't want to know why.)

How lads look in and out of their underwear is the movie's recurring motif, an obsession that swells to epic proportions in the production number "Y.M.C.A.": The Village People prance around a health club singing as male wrestlers pin each other to the mat in geometric patterns (like chorines in a Busby Berkeley musical), Speedo-clad boy bathing beauties dive into a pool (like chorines in an Esther Williams musical), and naked dudes lather up one another in the shower (like nothing you've ever seen before).

Answering the question "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?" Gypsy Rose Lee's kid sis, June Havoc, turns up to observe that the Village People are "just like Judy Garland at Carnegie Hall" (actually, they're just like Garland's audience) and to tell her son, Guttenberg, "It's your music that's bringing all these boys together --- they ought to get down on their knees!" Such double entendres run in the family, for when Perrine needs courage, Guttenberg assures her that "anybody who could swallow two Sno-Balls and a Ding-DOng shouldn't have any trouble with pride!"

It's Perrine who gets the most telling line of all: "This is the '80s! You're going to see a lot of things you've never seen before." Well, yes, but little did she realize that she, Jenner, the Village People, and Allan Carr musicals weren't going to be among them. Nobody saw this movie, which might have been more aptly titled "Can't Stand the Music."

Directed by Nancy Walker (any guesses why she never directed another feature?). Too bad --- A howl from start to finish, Just think what she could've done for all those "talented" Boy bands of the 90s.

"Can't Stop the Music"

Pure Camp

Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride

"Can't Stop the Music" is a pseudo-autobiography of The Village People. Jack Morell is a struggling composer who is desperate for fame. What he really needs is someone to sing them. Samantha, his roommate and Ron, a lawyer help him to form a group of six guys from Greenwich Village and the movie captures their rise to fame.
This is not a movie to be taken seriously by any means. There is not much plot, much characterization--not much of anything but the music of The Village People. You don't have to think or wonder or worry, you just have to sit back and have a good time. When the move came out in 1980 it was not considered as campy as it is today. The whole thing is silly but not offensive in any way.
In this film everyone smiles all of the time. I wonder if they were smiling because either they had nothing to say or that they realized what they had to say was so mundane. The movie is funny for many different reasons but not because it was meant to be so.
I have read reviews condemning the film and to those people I say, "Ease Up". This movie doesn't have a thing to say but to take us away from the rough side of life and given us an hour and a half of pure fun. So what if it doesn't have a message--it doesn't need to.

4 out of 5 stars Fond memories of a golden era.......2007-03-07

What do you remember about the 1970s? The end of the Vietnam War and the TV footage of the evacuation from Saigon? The Watergate Affair and the resignation of Richard Nixon? The Energy Crisis and the Arab oil embargo? Or do you remember hot sweaty nights on the disco floor and waking up with a different person each morning? For many of us it is the latter. The late 1970s were like a huge party which should have lasted forever. As we all know it didn't, brought to a shuddering halt by Reaganism and AIDS. Can't Stop the Music came out at the tail end of the disco craze and ushered in the 1980s - a campy, over-the-top monument to a golden era. The centerpiece of the film is undoubtedly the YMCA segment, a huge production number featuring attractive young men in the gym, wrestling, working out and performing acrobatics in the pool - a remarkable Busby Berkeley style masterpiece featuring flashes of full-frontal nudity and which was replayed over and over on prime time television in Australia. That was largely the reason why the film was a huge hit in Australia while it bombed spectacularly everywhere else. Most of the other production numbers are entertaining as well - Magic Night, Samantha, David Hodo's solo number I Love You To Death, The Ritchie Family's performance of Give Me A Break, Listen to the Sound of the City (played over the opening titles) and the title track which provides the climax and ends the film. The only poor segment is The Milk Shake featuring kids dressed as the Village People and a boring, almost tuneless song. Believe it or not this was actually used as a legitimate ad for milk on US and Canadian television. The plot of the film is weak, almost non-existent and provides a fictionalised account of the Village People story. The acting is terrible and is merely a method to link the production numbers. There are no (...) references and the film has a sanitised look about it apart from the YMCA segment. Some of the actors are good, others not so good. Olympic gold medallist and all-round hunk Bruce Jenner playing a straight accountant, the buxom Valerie Perrine playing the object d'esire, a young Steve Guttenberg (the only person to emerge from the film unscathed) who went on to have a successful film and TV career, and a rather seedy character who, it is implied, has a coke problem. The Village People themselves were dropped by their record company shortly after the film and moved to RCA where they attempted to change their image in line with the 'new romantic' craze. The album Renaissance was released and bombed badly, costing them their international following. Realising their mistake they told the media that the album was only intended to be a one-off experiment. But it was too late. The group retired to the cabaret circuit and played dinner dates at Hilton Hotels around the world. A word of warning about this DVD - it is in extreme wide screen and much of the action happens on the edge of the picture so zooming in to avoid the thick black bars on the top and bottom is not recommended. It is best viewed on a large plasma TV in a home theatre. The digital transfer is good and is worth buying for the 1970s look more than anything else - Bruce Jenner in a t-shirt cutoff showing his hairy torso must be seen to be believed. Every generation has its classic films - one generation had Gone With the Wind and The Wizard of Oz. Another generation had Star Wars. The disco generation has Can't Stop the Music. It remains an irresistable snapshot and a faithful testament to a golden era which we all hoped would last forever.

4 out of 5 stars Nostalgia .......2007-02-27

Had this on tape years ago - sure beats some of the shows out there on TV.
Just plain fun and a true history of the Village People who have always been different and diverse from all the others. Disco was an interesting craze and this should be saved as archival information. Especially the first song about New York City-super.

3 out of 5 stars Campy bit of disco fluff.......2007-02-09

This campy bit of disco fluff is widely considered to be the milkshake-lubed slippery slope that guided the Village People's 15.5 minutes of bizarro-world fame to a less-than-dignified crash landing. In the lead role is a miraculously flame-retardant Steve Guttenberg, whose film career survived this Discossault against all logic. The acting career of Bruce Jenner, whose ill-advised sashay through the village in shorty-shorts and a half-shirt will forever live in infamy? Not so much. Hindsight, as poor Bruce no-doubt laments to this day, is indeed a beyotch.

What is perhaps most remarkable about this film (aside from the blizzard of blow that had to have been trucked in for the shoot) is that first-and-last-time director Nancy Walker - yes, THAT Nancy Walker - manages to create what is arguably the gayest film ever made, without ever actually broaching the subject. Indeed, the mind-bogglingly homoerotic YMCA sequence alone has the power to elevate the legendary Walker to the loftiest of honorary homo heights. The sequence, which features all of the can't-even-act-it-away group trying to play it straight in a hot tub with a topless Valerie Perrine, is so queer that if one were to come across a crystalled pink leprechaun face down in a rainbow sling at a Montreal bathhouse, snorting poppers and greased halfway up his back in liquified Crisco, you *might* be in the neighborhood.

Rent, don't buy this DVD, and play with care around small animals, impressionable children, and bi-curious clergy. You can't say you weren't warned.

--Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars I'LL F_CK ANYTHING THAT MOVES! -Jay.......2007-09-12

4 out of 5 stars Good movie, but Zombie's is way better........2007-09-08

I know this movie has been released many times on DVD, and I can understand why so many people are complaining. However, I really can't complain because this is my first Halloween DVD, and there really is no point in buying other/further editions because I now have the MOVIE itself. I really don't care for special features. Now, I'm sure John Carpenter's Halloween became an instant classic in its time. It is a good movie and it can give you the chills. However, Rob Zombie's take on Halloween is way better, and it makes the original pretty boring. I'll give his movie five stars. I can't wait for it to come out on DVD. I don't know, I just found it to be far more intense, scary, loud, claustrophobic, and to the point. It really had me going in my seat, holding onto my boyfriend's arm for dear life. "Run, Laurie, run!" Oh, what am I doing praising Rob Zombie's fresh look on Halloween when I should be reviewing the original. I'll just stop. Ok, one last thing, Rob Zombie's Halloween is what the original should have been.

1 out of 5 stars WARNING!.......2007-08-15

This is the EXACT SAME DISC that was released in 1998! If you own that then you already have this disc! Do not be fooled by a fancy new slipcover! Anchor Bay is notorious for selling us all the exact same discs over and over with different covers, don't fall for it this time!

2 out of 5 stars The 1999 version...in a brand new cash-in slipcover!.......2007-08-14

I had already posted this below in the discussion area, but this quote taken from an early review of this "new" edition over at DVDActive pretty much says everything that needs to be said about this release. Hopefully it will save many of you some trouble:

"I've got to say this is a nice new slipcover. It features the original poster image, with a shiny rainbow hologram knife, title, and pumpkin face. The image itself is also raised. I wonder what's beneath this cardboard shell. Why, it's the original 1999 Anchor Bay release! Right down to the packaging! How about that? The video quality is identical to the original 1999 THX release because this is the EXACT SAME DISC. In 2005 Anchor Bay released a 25th anniversary version under their quickly defunct 'Divimax' series. The 2005 release was hated by some fans because of its colour correction, which was made without input from Dean Cundey. This release, the 1999 version, was supervised by Cundey, but is a lot dirtier, and somewhat darker. I personally can't decide which transfer I prefer, because I actually kind of like the bluish tint on the 2005 release. Halloween is also one of the few movies of the era that works when cleaned to modern crispness (sometimes too much digital cleansing actually hurts a gritty horror flick, but Halloween is slicker than most).
And because this is a re-release of the '99 release, people who hate movies can also watch Halloween is full-screen mode. In this mode the viewer can wonder with wild abandon as to why the music has suddenly become scary when they don't see Michael Myers enter stage right."

[...]

Bottom line: If you have the 1999 edition (still in print and available new through Amazon, might I add)--save your money on another shameless cash-in.

1 out of 5 stars Don't let Anchor Bay take advantage of you!.......2007-08-13

**This one-star review is based on the 2007 single disc release, not the movie itself.

How pathetic- with the coming of the unnecessary remake of the cult slasher classic comes yet another DVD release of the original- yet not often do we see a new re-release actually downgrade itself from its predecessor.
The 2-Disc edition, which was released several years ago, runs laps around this "new, restored" version, and I can't even imagine what Ancor Bay is epecting us to do here. I mean, how stupid do they think we are?

The 2-Disc version Halloween (Divimax 25th Anniversary Edition) is the DVD for you- not only does it contain the restored, widescreen presentation of Halloween, but it also contains an intruiging commentary track and several documentaries and featurettes.

The new release has the movie. And that's all. Besdies a distorted full-screen option.

To make a long story short: If you have the 2-Disc edition of Halloween, there is no need to buy this. If you don't have the 2-Disc edition, you should buy it.
Conclusuion: This product should make zero sales.

Took the body count film began by Mario Bava with Twitch of the Death Nerve and ran with it. Still the best slasher flick.
