Good For a Rainy Day.......2007-09-11
Mystery Woman is a nice series which proves you can have a crime series without people firing rounds of bullets, offensive language, and lewd behavior. It is a tribute to Kellie Martin, whi is known to play strong and wholesome charecters. She is the type of person you would want to bring home to meet the parents and the parents would like her.
"I think we need to hire a plumber...".......2007-04-24
Kellie Martin fans will love this warm and fun series of mystery films. "Snapshot" is a good entry with just the right balance of whimsy and murder. While they are a bit pedestrian, the look and setting of the series and a great cast make for an enjoyable time.
Samantha Kinsey (Kellie Martin) owns the Mystery Woman Book Store and seems to always get involved in some very real mayhem, much to the chagrin of Chief Connors (Casey Sander), who would rather not have her nosing around his cases. When her friend Barbara (Patty McCormick) claims to have been swindled out of half her brother's fortune upon his death, then is shot down while entering her home, Chief Connors thinks it was just a burglery gone bad.
Samantha, however, has other ideas, and with the help of her mysterious pal Philby (Clarance Williams III) sets out to discover why her friend was killed. A roll of film Barbara entrusted to Samantha with a picture of her brother's vintage Bently may hold the clue. Philby's mysterious past comes in handy, as does her other pal, Assistant D.A. Casandra (Nina Siemaszko).
Kellie Martin's abundant charm and a nice supporting cast drive this as much as the mystery itself. There is a fun side story and some amusing moments as Philby, for once out of his element, tries to fix some very old pipe problems in the store. George Stanford Brown, familiar to television fans as one of "The Rookies" way back when, directs this one quite nicely so that the most is made of what's here.
Created by Michael Sloan and written by Joyce Burditt, it's hard to go wrong with pretty Kellie Martin in the middle of it all. Mystery fans will find this a very pleasant distraction on a Saturday afternoon.
Great afternoon movie.......2007-01-24
I love these amature mystery sleuth movies. There's nothing complicated about this one in particular, which makes it perfect for a cold and rainy day (with lots of popcorn and butter!)
Great movie!
Solid Entry.......2006-06-21
MYSTERY WOMAN: SNAPSHOT details the murder of one of Samantha Kinsey's book club members. Barbara Sommers, one of the town's wealthy, has always been a conspiracy junkie, believing in UFOs and coverups. At the reading of her late brother's will, she finds out that she's left with none of the family company. Barbara insists that a conspiracy is in play, that she's being robbed of what's hers, and that her brother was murdered. After leaving a roll of film with Sam that Barbara tells her contains a clue to the murder, Barbara goes home and is murdered. Sam and Philby, the ex-CIA agent that was her father's friend and who shares her love of doing investigations that aren't quite legal, take up the chase for the murderer.
Kellie Martin (E.R.) stars as Samantha Kinsey. So far, A&E have made eight MYSTERY WOMAN movies, but not all of them have made it to DVD. The series was created by Michael Sloan, a staple in the mystery/adventure TV field. Georg Stanford Brown stars as Philby and even directs this one.
As a mystery, SNAPSHOT was so-so. There weren't enough suspects and the field narrowed pretty quickly once the initial murder kicked the play off. Still, Sam and her cronies are endearing characters and it was fun to watch them work.
Some of the usual confrontations with the local police was missing, and the stakes never truly rose above the solution of the murder. Philby even has his own little mystery to solve while he works on the pipes in the shop, but the solution comes out of left field and the viewer never had a chance at it.
MYSTERY WOMAN: SNAPSHOT is another great little mystery to watch in the casual comfort of home with a fellow sleuth. Perhaps the mystery will solve too quickly, with even the twists and turns telegraphed, but the characters are fun to watch and still worth the price of admission.

Enjoyable.......2004-11-02
I don't know what all the negative reviews were about, I found the film very enjoyable. Sweet and funny, well acted and filmed.
A lesson what not to do in making a film.......2004-09-09
Sometimes an excellent example of the bad is as useful as the opposite. Almost every aspect of this film was badly done. The basic idea could be OK, a recluse turned off by disappointments is found and brought back to life by a young naive kid who is open to everything and curious. This film shows how each aspect of production can be screwed up. The plot is unreal, untrue in every way to life and silly. Each step is telegraphed to the viewer as if they were a five year old with ADD. Dialogue is wooden and so expected that boredom is the result. By the way, Arab girls do not wander around by themselves and pick up young men. The production design person seemed to have a fascination for really bad wigs. Burt emotes from under a long gray mop. The super villian looks downright funny in his bright yellow obvious wig, and so on. The young version of Burt is so repulsive no one could possibly believe a young girl could kiss such a creature. He is supposed to be a "hippy" ( cliche version) and has another amazingly bad wig that looks like sea weed has been nailed to the top of his head. There is a wet tee shirt scene that is so obviously put in to grab the attention of teen age males, it is so out of place and put in by such a phony device that you wonder how could any director such as this live with themselves. There are two arty camera shots, both cliches, spot them if you can...I enjoyed this film and will treasure it, no matter how inexperienced you are , you can do better than this. The one truely happy moment for Burt is when he is cutting up a very bad book of poetry his character wrote. I'm sure he was thinking about the script or maybe the director.
Not so good.......2003-11-28
Film doesn't make you care about the characters. Old hippy in Amsterdam? Spoiled, immature brat finding herself? Feh.
Julie Christie was okay, but Burt Reynolds was indifferent and "Carmen Chaplin" was an absolute disgrace. A talentless person playing a shallow and silly character. Quite a combination. And if that's not enough, in spite of what the other characters in the movie say, Droopy ain't much to look at, either.
Rent if you must and be thankful it's only 90 minutes.
Warmth & Exotica.......2003-09-18
I have always loved Julie Christie, and have been cold towards Burt Reynolds. His white trash-stud-with-sense-of-humor has never appealed to me. But he has done a wonderful job of aging with dignity, at least on film. This latest DVD confirms that he makes a great character actor, who still exudes sex appeal. Christie...well, she is just as luminous as when she walked down the black and white English streets of Billy Liar. And her acting has reached a point that compares favorably with Meryl Streep, Katherine Hepburn, Vivien Leigh, and Garbo. She has aged with dignity, and honesty. I can't imagine Jane Fonda or Faye Dunaway showing their growth lines in close-up with such unconcern. A true Beauty never grows old, she matures and shines brighter.
sentimental.......2003-07-04
Every character in this movie was true and real, although the plot was a little off.
This movie involved an old bookseller in Amsterdam who couldn't forget the images of his old flame from some 20 years ago. A young girl who was searching for herself and ended up in Amsterdam, and the girl's mother.
The tale was quite simple and effective. I particularly enjoyed the view of Amsterdam in a fog, the streets in the night, the boats on the river and the crowds. The old bookstore looks very much like the old bookstores I visited before. Carmen Chaplin was very charming, she is the granddaughter of the great Charles Chaplin.
After viewing the movie, I felt warm and sentimental. If you believe in true love, happenstance and serendipity, then this is the movie for you.

Snapshot dvd star, Sigrid Thornton........2005-06-08
This edition is widescreen NOT full screen that I had thought. In comparing it to the "Night after Halloween" VHS version of this film. It does show all the top and bottom so it is not overmasked like other dvds are. However, there are parts on the vhs that show more on the "side" than the dvd! Especially durring the photo shoot. The dvd has her all the way to the left side of the screen cutting off part of her right side at times. The vhs has her centered, Much closer up and shows her entire right side. Very Strange, usually it is the vhs that has the side missing. Quality....Although the vhs is grainy at times, it has much more contrast and brightness. The dvd looks washed out and blurry in comparison. In short, not the greatest version of this movie. If you already have a vhs version, keep it and forget the dvd. mes.
