Grace Under Pressure.......2007-09-16
Every decade or so, a motion picture comes along that captures its subject's heroic essence so perfectly that the film becomes its subject. Such is the case with British director Michael Apted's superb biopic on abolitionist William Wilberforce, passionately portrayed by Welsh actor Ioan Gruffudd.
Though Wilberforce is largely unknown to Americans today, this movie is an excellent introduction to the great English parliamentarian who devoted twenty years of his life to eradicating the slave trade throughout the British Empire. (All slavery had been abolished in Great Britain itself by a judicial decision in 1772.) A devoutly religious though thoroughly skeptical man, Wilberforce figured prominently during both the Enlightenment and Britain's Evangelical Revival.
The movie opens as the eighteenth century draws to a close, with Wilberforce not at the beginning of his crusade to end the barbaric practice of slavery, but at what seems to be its most hopeless point. Once one of the youngest members of the House of Commons and a powerful orator, he's now gaunt and dejected, having nearly exhausted his fortune and health in service of his fight.
Riding in a carriage along the muddy road in the rain, he happens upon a driver whipping his fallen horse. Moved to the animal's defense (he was a founding member of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), Wilberforce uses simple logic to persuade the driver to cease his brutal flogging, explaining that the horse would more likely regain its strength if left to recover for an hour. This simple exchange, in which he achieves his ideals through practical persuasion, reveals his forceful personality and unyielding integrity, traits that would serve him so well throughout his career as a legislator.
Wilberforce is on his way to the resort town of Bath, There, he hopes, the famous mineral springs will heal his body from the ravages of colitis and addiction to laudanum, an opiate prescribed by his doctors. When he arrives, however, his friends, economist Henry Thornton (Nicholas Farrell) and his wife Marianne (Sylvestra Le Touzel), have a different sort of tonic in mind to cure what ails him. They slyly maneuver their friend into a "chance" meeting with a ravishingly beautiful young abolitionist and social reformer, Barbara Spooner (Romola Garai). Resenting his friends' manipulations, he at first rebuffs her. But the Thorntons are relentless and soon set him up again, bringing Barbara to dinner at Wilberforce's house.
This time their chemistry is too powerful to deny. Barbara and William launch a long conversation that extends into the wee hours. The subject turns to his tireless but fruitless efforts to stop the slave trade, a story told in flashbacks that constitute the bulk of the film.
Elected to Parliament at twenty-one in 1780, Wilberforce barrels into the House of Commons full of piss and vinegar, taking on all comers with his confrontational debating style and razor-sharp wit. One dewy morning, as he lolls about his lawn, transfixed at the intricacy of God's handiwork in a spider web, he experiences a spiritual epiphany.
After his conversion, Wilberforce's interest in the affairs of state evaporates and he ponders a life of religious contemplation. But to those around him--especially William Pitt the Younger (Benedict Cumberbatch), a friend in Parliament who's angling to become Britain's youngest Prime Minister--Wilberforce's divine spark would be better put to practical use. Pitt asks him, "Do you intend to use your beautiful voice to praise the Lord, or to change the world?"
Wilberforce isn't convinced until a group of Quaker abolitionists visit one evening. They bring along a liberated slave from the New World, Olaudah Equiano (Youssou N'Dour), whose memoirs about his horrific passage from Africa would soon spark public outrage against the peculiar institution. He is shocked by the brand on Equiano's chest ("to let you know you no longer belong to God, but to a man," the former slave explains) and by his iron shackles.
"We understand you're having problems choosing whether to do the work of God, or the work of a political activist," says radical abolitionist Thomas Clarkson (Rufus Sewell). Another guest (Georgie Glen) finishes the thought: "We humbly suggest that you can do both."
Taking up the battle, Wilberforce introduces a bill every year to abolish the slave trade--and every year the bill is defeated. Yet he perseveres. In a nation where slavery is largely out of sight and mind, he constantly contrives ways to force it into the faces of polite society. He launches petition drives and sponsors meetings where Equiano lectures and sells copies of his book. At a gathering of MPs and their wives aboard a tour boat, the captain weighs anchor alongside a slave ship just returned from a run between Africa and Jamaica. Wilberforce notes that only a third of the original six hundred passengers survived the journey, and exclaims, "That smell is the smell of death. Slow, painful death. . . .Breathe it deeply. Take those handkerchiefs away from your noses! There now, remember that smell."
Wilberforce ends his painful reminiscing, too taxed to go on. Barbara is clearly moved, finding inspiration in his struggle. The two passionately talk of their ideals, while the sexual tension silently builds between them. If Barbara's fiery red tresses, flawless peaches-and-cream complexion, and corseted, heaving cleavage weren't sufficient to bag the man, nothing would have stirred him. Without a word spoken of love (not to mention sex), romance blossoms instantly and inevitably.
As morning breaks, the two announce their engagement to their friends.
I like this little touch, coming as it did from out of left field. This is old-fashioned moviemaking at its best, with courtship scenes far more erotically charged than the crassly explicit sex in most movies nowadays.
Their marriage and Barbara's pregnancy become a beautifully simple metaphor for Wilberforce's own regeneration of health and will. He heads back to Parliament to fight the good fight once more. Political intrigue moves front and center as Tories Wilberforce and Pitt, along with the abolitionist Clarkson and Whig MP Charles Fox (Michael Gambon, best known as the Headmaster in the Harry Potter series), put their heads together to plot the end of the slave trade. What follows is the best depiction of political machinations that I've seen since Otto Preminger's political thriller Advise & Consent, based on Allen Drury's novel. Witnessing Wilberforce's ultimate triumph left me nearly breathless.
Costume dramas usually leave me yawning, but not this time. Production designer Charles Wood's painstakingly researched and designed sets lends the movie period authenticity, while Remi Adefarasin's factual cinematography downplays idiosyncratic camera angles and lets the actors and the settings predominate. Writer Steven Knight and director Apted's deft balance of gravitas and levity give the whole business a timeless feel befitting its hero's stature, but without clumsy signposting.
The only drawback, I felt, was that Albert Finney, in an otherwise bravura performance, seemed underused--especially considering his pivotal role as John Newton, the former slave-ship captain who later repented and penned the moving hymn for which the film is named. While the scenes depicting his influence on Wilberforce were succinct and heartrending, they also felt somewhat truncated.
Amazing Grace, whose release was timed to coincide with the 200th anniversary of Wilberforce's legislative victory, February 23, 1807, has been well received by faithful and secular, conservative and liberal. Still, it generated some criticism on the pages of the Wall Street Journal, where guest columnist Charlotte Allen found a "cover-up" of Wilberforce's evangelical Christianity. But the film was not about his religious motives per se; it was about his campaign to end slavery. I think she missed the forest for the trees: The slave-trade abolition was Wilberforce's apotheosis, and that is exactly what Apted put up on the screen.
In a recent interview, producer Patricia Heaton (herself an outspoken, religiously motivated opponent of abortion) described Amazing Grace as an inspiring biography of "the Abraham Lincoln of England" and as an antidote to our "age of such cynicism and despair, particularly about politics and religion."
I agree. William Wilberforce is historically significant for his courageous actions in stopping an inhuman evil. While religion played no small part in motivating those actions, I really doubt that so many talented people would have assembled such an unabashed labor of love as this movie had Wilberforce decided to spend his days contemplating God's grandeur, while ignoring his own potential for personal greatness.
EVERY man, woman, and child ought to see this movie!.......2007-09-15
This is a powerful, captivating story of how God used one ordinary man to change the course of an entire nation. THIS is an account that you won't find in a secular textbook, as there has been a complete attempt to write God out of HIS-STORY. But this movie is one of hundreds of thousands of true stories showing the power of God, the evil of sin (and a system like slavery), and the courage and fortitude of one man who was willing to lead his generation. (Did you know? The historically black college Wilberforce College was named after William Wilberforce. Also, anyone who has read Olaudah Equiano's slave narrative will find that the two men were contemporaries; Equiano is brilliantly portrayed in this movie, too.) In short, this movie left me sitting in tears in the theater, and I'm sure it will powerfully impact and transform me as I watch it at home yet again. I'm only a young adult, but this is a movie that I will watch again and again; in fact, I will definitely show this to my grandchildren one day. It's just that good!
IT'S WONDERFUL! I LOVED IT!.......2007-09-12
I saw this movie in the theater twice and can't wait to see it again and again. Besides being one of my favorite songs, "Amazing Grace" is now one of my very favorite movies of all time. The story is told very well, bringing the viewer into the scenes (at least I felt as though I were there--especially into the parliament debates). All the acting was superb. Albert Finney's portrayal of John Newton was wonderful. Although he was not as suave and good-looking in this one as he usually is, Rufus Sewell (a favorite of mine) did a great job. And Ioan Gruffudd just took my breath away! He WAS William Wilberforce. (He was new to me in this film, and to me he is the most handsome actor in movies today.) The true story illustrated that something very big can be accomplished with faith, prayer, patience, persistence, and dedicated help. In spite of many obstacles and much resistance, Wilberforce never gave up, and he made a very big difference.
Quality in every way!.......2007-09-10
This is a beautifully made film. The acting is superb and the story inspiring. It reminds us that one person can make a difference and that there are things in this world worth fighting for, no matter how long it takes.
5 Star- AWESOME.......2007-09-09
It watched this movie 3 times on a British Airlines flight from London to Entebee, Uganda. Absolutely outstanding. A must see. True story. God used this man to change the world.

Disgusting Movie.......2007-08-27
This is not the movie about William Wilburforce the Christian evangelist. This is a horrible movie about HIV and homosexuality.
OK drama.......2006-07-24
It's been some time since I watched this, but I remember it as a good experience. It tells the frustrating relationship between a somewhat aimless young gay guy and a depressed HIV+ older one who just came back from New York and is now his neighbour. Also we see the young guy's tense relations with his family.
The dvd image is fullscreen, soft but nice. The movie seems to be shot with those filters that give some aura to things, especially where light hits directly. The subtitles are not optional.
Product Description
What is Calvinism? Does this teaching make man a robot and God the author of sin? What about free will? If the church accepts Calvinism wont evangelism be stifled, perhaps extinguished? How can we balance Gods sovereignty and mans responsibility? What are the differences between historic Calvinism and hyper-Calvinism? Why did men like Augustine, Luther, Calvin, Spurgeon, Whitefield, Edwards and a host of evangelists deny the Arminian definition of free will and label it heresy? Why did the Roman Catholic Church condemn the Reformed teaching of predestination and election and embrace free will theology? And why do so many Protestants agree with Rome on this issue? Crammed full of vignettes, analogies and interviews from leading Biblical scholars, church Historians and pastors such as Dr. R.C. Sproul, Dr. D. James Kennedy, Dr. George Grant, Dr. Stephen Mansfield, Dr. Thomas Ascol, Dr. Thomas Nettles, Dr. Roger Schultz, Pastor Walt Chantry, Dr. Joe Morecraft, Dr. Ken Talbot, Pastor Walter Bowie and Dr. R.C. Sproul, Jr., this video will explain what the great Baptist preacher C.H. Spurgeon meant when he said to deny Calvinism is to deny the gospel of Jesus Christ. FREE 59 PAGE STUDY GUIDE WITH PURCHASE.
Customer Reviews:
"WOW" is all I can say about this DVD.......2007-09-11
I have been a Christian since my youth, and likewise, I was an Arminian and didn't even know it. I never thought that a study of church history would be so important and useful in exposing the heresies that have emerged throughout our Church's life, while at the same time pointing out and reaffirming the truths that great men of God have defended...truths that the Scriptures reinforce.
It's true what the DVD says, Arminianism is one step closer to the errors of the Roman Catholic (false) religion. Is salvation only "possible" for the believer, or was it ACCOMPLISHED IN FULL by Christ for the believer?
I strongly suggest this DVD to both Arminian (whether ignorantly or not), and Calvinist alike. If you are struggling with the word "predestination" after you've read Romans 8 and not quite sure how to take it in, then this DVD is for you.
The Bible tells us in Prv 22:28 "Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set."
Our church fathers in history have seen the erroneous doctrines that have arised, and stood against them, defending the Truth. Sadly, in our modern world, we have forgotten our father's landmarks and their experience in dealing with false doctrines.
We have slipped into the trap that is one step closer to universalism and a "works religion" that dilutes God's love for his elect, dilutes the power of Christ's work on the cross, and effectually causes us to commit idolatry by worshiping a false god, a god we have been taught by Arminian teachers and preachers, rather than the God of the Bible and His glorious and gracious plan of salvation.
Predestination is not a cause of concern for the believer, rather it should be a reason for joy and security in your salvation. Once God wraps His fingers around you, you are NEVER coming out of His hands. And it is all of grace!
The DVD has many wonderful insights from great theologians of our time, as well as a deep study of church history. You will see that this debate is not new in our Church, but rather it goes back as far as the reformation, and you could even say that as far back as the Apostle's Pauls writings - for he foresaw the questions and objections that would arise from such a controversial subject!
The DVD uses much scripture and does a good job of clearing up any misconceptions you might have, and fixes any erroneous translations you might have of certain Bible verses.
As C.H. Spurgeon said, "Calvinism is the Gospel". Therefore to depart from Calvinism is apostasy, and quite frankly, heresy.
Excellent Tool AGAINST the Calvinist Heresy.......2007-07-29
I regret having to give this a bad rating. I will say that anything Eric Holmberg produces demands your attention due to his artistic skill, and on artistic/production merit alone, this does not disappoint. However, the content drags the quality of the video into the gutter. The content does not give a just observation of Calvinism's valid criticism, putting the video into the realm of propaganda instead of a documentary. This is not the place to detail Calvinism's broad and extremely serious errors, but, I shall cite two issues Calvinists cannot overcome: 1) if "Total Depravity" is true, then Jesus Christ, as a Man (while also God), inherited this "original sin, and is, therefore, not "perfect," and hence, his Sacrifice failed, since a sinless life was required; and 2) God makes clear through His Word that He does not intend ANY person to die in their sins, and *invites* everyone to Christ - "He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance" - 2 Peter 3:9 - this cannot be explained away, and collapses utterly "Unconditional Election" and "Limited Atonement." Calvinism is founded upon three unadmitted principles: 1) sophistry, 2) semantic games, and 3) contextual isolation ("taking out of context" key verses). I don't believe that Eric Holmberg or most Calvinists are willfully wrong, and I believe most adherents of Calvinism are sincere and honestly think the errors are "scriptural." This video is valuable ONLY for a defense of the Bible AGAINST Calvinism, as it makes clear the utter weakness of their "case" and how word games, faulty logic, and "sound byte" theology are its foundation. Further, there is much reliance on "authorities" in the persons of "respected theologians," past and present. Well, if these "authorities" are to be respected, we might as well all go join the Roman church, since all the early theologian "authorities" were Catholic! (and Catholicism rejects Calvinism).
It doesn't get much better than this.......2007-07-23
This two dvd set on Calvinism is great! They take the great truth of Calvinism and just lay it bare for all to see and decide for themselves. It is presented in such a clear fashion that even if you don't agree, at least you will have a good understanding of what real Calvinism actually teaches. Get the dvds, open your bible and see for yourself.
Rendered 'unavailable' to many!.......2007-07-10
I really wanted to see this. With all the technology available today I do not understand why this is not Closed Captioned! Makes it impossible and unavailable to me and I'm sure to so many others!
Outstanding!.......2007-03-26
I had to watch it three or four times to completely absorb it. But, it was well worth the time. I shared it with several friends, who all agreed whole heartedly. It was just outstanding, and I would highly recommend it for anyone interested in learning more about this counter intuitive - but clearly Biblical topic.
With regard to the one negative feedback that I read here on Amazon, I would only comment that there is - in fact - no inconsistency between what is written in the Epistle of James and Doctrine of Predestination. Simply stated, we are saved by Grace unto Good Works. In other words, one is not saved by good works (i.e., one does not "earn" salvation), yet it is still true that "a tree is known by it's fruit". In other words, true believers will clearly and necessarily have to bear good fruit in obedience to their Lord & Savior.
In Mathew 22:34-40, Jesus makes it clear that Good Works (e.g., "Love your neighbor as yourself"), comes second - after the Greatest Commandment
(i.e., "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind."). Observing the Second Greatest Commandment without the first is ultimatly meaningless. But, if you do the first, then the second must follow. On the other hand, it is possible to do the second without the first - and that is crux of it.
Anyway, I thought it was a great DvD!

When she learns that her neighbor, mayoral candidate Welton (Moses Gunn), is nothin' more than a white man's pawn, she takes him under her wing and hits the street as his campaign manager! Nowthe blue-blood establishment has a no-nonsense, go-get-'em granny to deal with in a battle for the Baltimore vote!
Customer Reviews:
we are all Mom's children, just as she said we were..........2007-09-14
Amazing Grace was the last movie that starred the incomparable Moms Mabley; she died only eight months after the release of this film. Amazing Grace gives us plenty of laughs, snappy dialogue and many, many scenes that allow Moms Mabley to strut her stuff and entertain us as no other comedienne ever could!
The action starts just after Grace (Moms Mabley) returns to Baltimore after a family reunion. She quickly finds out that her next door neighbor, who she barely knows because he's new to the neighborhood, is running for Mayor of Baltimore! With her platonic buddy Forthwith Wilson (Slappy White) she spies on her new neighbors, Welton Waters (Moses Gunn) and his wife Creola (Rosalind Cash). When Moms find out that the city's corrupt political machine is buying the election of Waters to use him as a paid pawn, Grace vows to take action!
Grace boldly spies even on the current mayor and helps gather damaging information on him and his machine to help Welton Waters rid himself of the political machine and run a clean campaign. As other reviewers have noted, Grace's campaign speech near the end of the movie is truly stirring. Moms Mabley outperforms even herself with this heartfelt speech encouraging younger people to fight for a better future.
Of course, it may well seem that I gave it all away--but rest assured I didn't. There are cameo roles for Butterfly McQueen and Stepin Fetchit that help to make the movie truly special. Moreover, questions still remain. Will Waters be able to win running on a totally clean platform? Will the political establishment try to block Waters even after they are exposed as crooks--and, if so, how will they fight back at Welton Waters? What about Grace and her buddy Forthwith Wilson? Will they ever become more than just friends? Watch the movie and find out!
The cinematography could have been better in a couple of scenes; at one point Forthwith is dancing in Grace's living room and his head is partially cut off the top of the screen! The choreography works well, however, in crowd scenes including the scene in which Grace gives her speech encouraging younger people to make a better world.
Hey, this may have been a low budget film but I scarcely noticed and I really didn't care. People watch this film because they want so much to see the wonderful performances of Moms Mabley, Slappy White, James Karen as an aide to the corrupt white establishment, Butterfly McQueen--and Stepin Fetchit in a role that WASN'T demeaning to African Americans.
I highly recommend this film for fans of the stars in this movie; and if you want light hearted comedy with a touch of social commentary then this is the movie for you!
Great job, everyone! Thank you so much!
Moms Mabley Was Awesome.......2005-10-12
I have heard of Moms Mabley but never got a chance to see her comedy until I watched Amazing Grace. The DVD was excellent and Moms Mabley comedy was off the hook. I strongly recommend the DVD
I Love It!.......2004-11-24
I saw this movie on cable a while back and I just laughed myself to the ground. Let me explain this movie; A older lady(Ms Moms Mabley herself, who was a gem and is gone now, but if u was around back in the day, u know what I mean); just happens to live next door to this shady politician(Moses Gunn), who if elected, will take the money slated for that area and use for his own "uses". Somehow, Moms has this fella(Slappy White) who helps her out in her shenanigans by putting up elaborate spy systems so they can hear the politician's business. After his high faluting wife(Rosalind Cash, who was as much a gem and gone too)puts on airs with Moms and some of the neighborhood women, Moms give her something to cry for and she and her husband in time, see the light to turn things around. Folks, this is one good movie; a bit disjointed at times, but you can catch the message just the same; Look for bit parts by Debbie Morgan and some others who are prominent now.
A hidden treasure!.......2003-09-09
This movie is a true hidden gem. The footage justs takes you back and makes you feel as if you were back in '75. Definate feel good movie.
Amazing Grace.......2003-07-04
Fantastic! What a wonderful movie, blending the old south with the movement of the times. It influenced me to buy it and add it to my collection of American movies.

Dr. Schaeffer, who was one of the most influential Christian thinkers in the twentieth century, shows that secular humanism has displaced the Judeo-Christian consensus that once defined our nation's moral boundaries. Law, education, and medicine have all been reshaped for the worse as a consequence. America's dominant worldview changed, Schaeffer charges, when Christians weren't looking.
"Where have the Bible-believing Christians been in the last 40 years?" asks Schaeffer. "Where have we been as we have changed to this other consensus and all the horrors and stupidity of the present moment have come down on our culture?"
In this lecture, now on DVD, Schaeffer lists two reasons for evangelical indifference: a false concept of spirituality and fear. He calls on believers to stand against the tyranny and moral chaos that come when humanism reignsand warns that believers may, at some point, be forced to make the hard choice between obeying God or Caesar. A Christian Manifesto is a thought-provoking and bracing Christian analysis of American culture and the obligation Christians have to engage the culture with the claims of Christ.

A Wakeup Call.......2006-02-15
Dr. Francis Schaeffer calls on the Church to let go of our counterfeit theory of spirituality as well as our fear to stand against the despotism and moral chaos that has resulted from the cultural shift away from the historic foundations of Judeo-Christian thought. The modern and post-modernist are leading our country and our children's children into the abyss of secular humanism and meaninglessness. This DVD is a thought-provoking and refreshing analysis of American culture.
Description
For more than 200 years these treasured hymns have touched the lives of millions, for they are the most compelling music the world has ever known. These beloved songs were a product of a special union between the Spirit of God and the human heart. They were forged in the real life crucibles of tragedy, pain, and overwhelming joy. "Amazing Grace" was written by John Newton 25 years after he abandoned his life as an African slave trader. "It is Well with My Soul" poured from the broken heart of Horatio Spafford after his four daughters were killed in a tragic shipwreck. Joseph Scriven penned "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" after his fiancee drowned the day before their wedding. "Silent Night" and "How Great Thou Art" evolved from poems written by an Austrian parish priest and a Swedish pastor in praise and thanksgiving to their Creator. They are hymns that will endure forever. Each hymn is performed by soloists and choirs; "Silent Night" features the Vienna Boys Choir.

This product was falsely advertised........2007-05-12
Although the Vienna Boys Chior was predominantly mentioned on the label (see above), the CD did not actually contain more than one or two performances by the same. I was not satisfied with the product.

This is a wonderful DVD for several reasons. The scenery showing the wonders of God's creation is beautiful. And, the stories behind the writing of the hymns are uplifting. If we imperfect humans can produce sounds like this, one can only imagine what it must be like in Heaven!
Beautiful, Inspiring DVD.......2007-01-21
This precious dvd has lifted my spirits when they've been down. With great cinematography and sound, we can learn how the greatest hymns of the faith were sometimes born out of faith-testing trials and tragedies. This one is a real keeper. Makes an excellent gift for almost any occasion.
They sing like angels.......2007-01-17
Every time I hear the Vienna Boys Choir sing it takes me back when I was a young boy who sang in a choir, but I don't think I was ever as good as these boys are/were. With every selection they sing, you know that they have practiced it to the point of perfection, and this album is no exception. I'm sure that anyone who enjoys the treble voice of a boy and who also enjoys the Vienna Boys Choir, will enjoy this album.
