Description

Based on Alex Haley's best-selling novel about his African ancestors, Roots followed several generations in the lives of a slave family. The saga began with Kunta Kinte (LeVar Burton), a West African youth captured by slave raiders and shipped to America in the 1700s. The family's saga is depicted up until the Civil War where Kunte Kinte's grandson gained emancipation. Roots made its greatest impression on the ratings and widespread popularity it garnered. On average, 130 million - almost half the country at the time - saw all or part of the series.

This is a FANTASTIC movie! The DVD's are wonderful! Thank you for selling it!

5 out of 5 stars A must have for ANY DVD collection!!!.......2007-08-20

I recently rented this from Blockbuster and was TOTALLY BLOWN AWAY!!! Not only is it VERY true to the book (which I read several years ago), the acting is SUPERB from both sides (white and black). I esp. loved John Amos, Georg Stanford Brown and Lloyd Bridges; they were really "in the moment" when doing this. Queen is good too, but the acting caliber here probably WON'T be beat for a LONG TIME!!!

4 out of 5 stars New Light.......2007-08-14

I watched the roots series when it came on T.V. sometime ago. It was a pleasure watching it again. This time I saw things that I didn't see before. I will give this DVD to my grandchildren so they can see how really important family is.

5 out of 5 stars Roots-the best.......2007-08-12

I originally ordered the Roots dvd and the Roots chapter book for my African American history class since it was required study material at my college, and i was going to sell them to the next student for next quater BUT i have changed my mind. The Roots saga is a very heart touching story. It is very well made and the actors are just fabulous. I would definitely recommend this for everyone who wants to learn more about the history.

3 out of 5 stars Roots DVD.......2007-08-09

good movie, but the DVD has a small hesitation about every 30 minutes throughout the movie. Just a bit distracting.

Wolfgang Petersen (In the Line of Fire) made his first English-language film with this 1984 fantasy about a boy (Barret Oliver) visualizing the stories of a book he's reading. The imagined tale involves another boy, a warrior (Noah Hathaway), and his efforts to save the empire of Fantasia from a nemesis called the Nothing. Whether or not the scenario sticks in the memory, what does linger are the unique effects, which are not quite like anything else. Plenty of good fairy-tale characters and memorable scenes, and the film even encourages kids to read. --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars Imaginative story that keeps our child's interest.......2007-08-25

This movie is great for kids who have no problem with imagination and who like to READ. Our four-year old can get bored with some movies since they are not as good as a book (his words!) but this movie keeps his attention just fine. It does have some rather scary parts in it but nothing graphic or poor language and as long as you are watching TOGETHER and explain what is happening, there should be no problem with fright or nightmares. We bought the three-part movie series to our delight.

5 out of 5 stars Neverending Enjoyment.......2007-08-24

The Neverending Story has been a perfect childhood movie since it's induction into the greatest kids' movies of all time. I've watched this movie growing up and continue to share it with the younger friends and family.

5 out of 5 stars Love this movie, but where's the special treatment.......2007-08-17

This was a seminal movie for me in my childhood (along with The Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal, Goonies and others) and I love it to this day. The only thing I'm disgrunteled about is it's poor treatment on DVD. I want a special edition: with a making of documentary highlighting the whole process from the actual book to the script, character sketches and concepts, set design, creature design and building, and all the goodies real film enthusiasts love to watch. And interviews! I mean, even if there is no older footage of the process of making the film can't the people responsible put something together to honor this film. Atleast a director's commentary or something. I love this film and I will continue to watch it from time to time...I just wish that the DVD editions had just a lil' bit extra for all the fans and enthusiasts of this wonderful fantasy.

5 out of 5 stars Great movie.......2007-07-28

Great movie, one that you can watch over and over for many years. But if you want the full experience, you should read the book by Micheal Ende.

4 out of 5 stars They don't make movies like this anymore...........2007-07-06

Remember that moment at the end of Wizard of Oz when the Good Witch tells Dorothy she's had the power to go home all along? Remember the collective "What the (BLEEP)..." from everyone watching, regardless of their age?

I had a very similar reaction when I reached the end of this movie.

That's not to say I was disappointed. Quite the contrary. It was like a slap in the face of "why didn't I think of that?" Often times the best endings are so obvious you overlook them and this movie is a testament to that fact.

That having been said it's also one of the best fantasy rides you'll ever take in 2 hours. A turtle whose shell is an island. A talking wolf. A luck dragon. Two sets of sphinx like characters, both offering riddles. A horse whose own sadness nearly is is undoing... oh and a rock biter.

These are just a few of the fanciful elements that make this very under-celebrated movie worth high praise!

If you saw it as a child and you now have children, show it to your children. Make it something you share for generations. You'll be glad you did.

They don't make movies like this any more. The more we can teach our children to have imaginations, the more likely they are to dream big dreams... and the more likely they are to turn those dreams into reality.

David Lynch peeks behind the picket fences of small-town America to reveal a corrupt shadow world of malevolence, sadism, and madness. From the opening shots Lynch turns the Technicolor picture postcard images of middle class homes and tree-lined lanes into a dreamy vision on the edge of nightmare. After his father collapses in a preternaturally eerie sequence, college boy Kyle MacLachlan returns home and stumbles across a severed human ear in a vacant lot. With the help of sweetly innocent high school girl (Laura Dern), he turns junior detective and uncovers a frightening yet darkly compelling world of voyeurism and sex. Drawn deeper into the brutal world of drug dealer and blackmailer Frank, played with raving mania by an obscenity-shouting Dennis Hopper in a career-reviving performance, he loses his innocence and his moral bearings when confronted with pure, unexplainable evil. Isabella Rossellini is terrifyingly desperate as Hopper's sexual slave who becomes MacLachlan's illicit lover, and Dean Stockwell purrs through his role as Hopper's oh-so-suave buddy. Lynch strips his surreally mundane sets to a ghostly austerity, which composer Angelo Badalamenti encourages with the smooth, spooky strains of a lush score. Blue Velvet is a disturbing film that delves into the darkest reaches of psycho-sexual brutality and simply isn't for everyone. But for a viewer who wants to see the cinematic world rocked off its foundations, David Lynch delivers a nightmarish masterpiece. --Sean Axmaker

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Baby wants Blue Velvet!.......2007-07-21

The candy colored clown they call the sandman... This movie is a bit of a classic and a lot of people have already talked a lot about it. I think it has some great characters. Frank the villain is pretty original and totally out of his mind. It has the typical Lynch message that underneath it all man is evil and there's tons of horrible things going on. The film is pretty intense most of the way through, after you've watched it once though, it loses a lot of its power. Still a pretty shocking and original movie.

5 out of 5 stars Blue Velvet.......2007-07-06

This hallucinogenic mystery-thriller from cult director Lynch explores the twisted underside of small-town American life, fusing noirish elements of mood and atmosphere with a classic Hitchcockian whodunit. Lynch's imprint is everywhere, including MacLachlan's deliberately trancelike acting, Rossellini's melodramatic distress, and Hopper's over-the-top turn as the angry, liquid-ether-huffing sadist who has a strange and violently sexual hold on Dorothy. Even the music--the Bobby Vinton song and Angelo Badalamenti's eerie score--completes the director's disquieting effect. Filmed in gorgeous Technicolor, "Blue Velvet" is a lurid parable about innocence and evil film that mystery/noir fans will find irresistible. (Also check out Dean Stockwell's sublime, campy turn as one of Frank's odd-ball colleagues!)

5 out of 5 stars A classic........2007-06-30

Anyone who has ever lived in a small community where normality is assumed probably also suspects that beneath the surface of everyday life lurk malevolent happenings. Blue Velvet is about the moral rot underlying the seemingly hopeful and idealistic American Dream.

Blue Velvet explores the dark side of human relationships built upon power and perversion. This film, written and directed by one of my favourite directors, David Lynch (cutl classic Eraserhead, 2001's greatest Muholland Drive, masterful The Elphant Man and the dark and unsettling Lost Highway), is one of the most hallucinatory, interesting movies ever released in the history of cinema. It elicited a wildly divergent critical and commercial response upon its release ranging from laudatory praise to complete damnation. It is not a movie for everyone. Those who savor exotic experiences are sure to find it both frenzied and exhilarating. I found it the later, Blue Velvet is a visually stunning film, it has beautiful, haunting and unforgettable images, and dark nightmarish scenes, some of which, will propably never leave my mind, and a film that can manage to accomplish that certainly deserves my praise.

The performances are exceptional, and brutally honest, especially the ones that come from the leading man Kyle MacLachlan. All of the actors seemed to fit their characters perfectly, especially Dennis Hooper, who is terrifyingly abnormal and pure evil as one of the best cinema villains to grace the screen. Laura Dern and Isabella Rossellini are both among the top notch, exceptional cast.

What is so stunning about Blue Velvet is its visual appeal. Laced with arresting beautiful and horrfying images that range from realistic and surreal. The music on the soundtrack demonstrates the eerie effects of many songs (including Roy Orbison's "In Dreams", which is lip-synchs in a disturbing way), which can transport us and have great impact on us, into realms of nostalgia and fantasy. And what is so scary about this film is that despite its heavy dosages of surrealism and fantasy, the film is very real. This kind of underworld could exist absolutely anywhere, and was is evern more chilling is that it already does.

Despite its inferior imitations and stylistic features that have been borrowed, stolen and reused over and over again (Blue Velvet's visual feel can be seen in American Beauty, Lantana etc.), the film will remain the pinnacle of them all. Blue Velvet is a stunner. Daring, beautiful, horrifying, exhilarating, influential, bold and simply amazing, worthy of a ten out of ten.

3 out of 5 stars A technical masterpiece; abhorrent Lynch message........2007-06-18

On one hand, Blue Velvet is a brilliant channeling of Nicholas Ray, it displays a stunning use of Cinemascope and Dolby Stereo, and is the cresting wave of Lynch's technique that he developed with Eraserhead. But for all of its technical glory, it is also a disgusting concoction of a film that takes the Sam Fuller moral universe to its repulsive denoument.

Lynch creates some incredibly humiliating and violent scenes. He reveals human beings at their most horriffic, abusive, and vulnerable. For this alone, Blue Velvet is quite amazing and certainly unique in the annals of American film. But Lynch shows almost no ability to counteract this with any semblance of structure or decency. In fact, the only characters in the movie who might signify compassion are treated as dupes, turncoats, or ignorami.

I had the experience of seeing Blue Velvet many years ago at a screening where cinematographer Frederic Elmes spoke. I was about 16 at the time and I could not believe that during the entire film a group of hipster kids were laughing hysterically. I mean, laughing at a brutalized, raped woman standing on a lawn, delusioned into thinking she has found a kindred spirit from her nightmarish life. It was simply awful -- because here was a film that I had been so mesmerized with, found it so powerful, only to have it mocked by these obnoxious jerks. I wound up getting into an argument with them at the screening -- Elmes was there, it was bad.

But there are simply laughably awful things in Blue Velvet. Like the bird. The last shot with Dorothy. It has to be a mockery of Judeo-Christian middle-American values. Or is it?

The more I watch Blue Velvet, particularly in light of Lynch's subsequent films, the more it becomes apparent that he is frequently inept at conveying any meaningful message. After the monomaniacal, relatively simplistic tour-de-force of The Elephant Man, he has lapsed into the worst kind of cornball sentimentalizing (The Straight Story). Does Lynch want his characters to be laughed at hysterically for being stripped naked, raped brutally? Maybe he doesn't care, it's hard to tell. Blue Velvet is extremely confused about what it wants to say. That would be one thing if it were simply an art film, but this film depicts such shocking inhumanity, I find the lack of focus disturbing. Frank is nothing short of a homicidal maniac -- these people really exist in the world. Lynch gets the visceral cinematic payoffs of violence, but he does nothing to countermand them. If that isn't exploitative I don't know what is.

5 out of 5 stars if you havent seen this yet, give yourself a gift........2007-04-30

i can say various things about why i love this movie, but most importantly i think is the hitchcock-esque atmoshpere and the dark alien underworld alongside the innocent down to earth relationship between kyle's and laura's characters play a lot on how a person will view the film. lets say this...if you enjoy movies like pulp fiction, big lebowski, and rear window, lynch is really a treat..especially here. i mean, i personally felt like i was in the character, Jeffrey's shoes the whole time.

i dont know how some folks dislike this film, but im not going to argue since that is their opinion...just give it a viewing iif you never saw it. at least once.

4 out of 5 stars A More Complete Picture.......2007-08-15

This DVD has THE NEVERENDING STORY on one side and the other side of the disc has THE NEVERENDING STORY II.

In THE NEVERENDING STORY, Bastian Bux (Barret Oliver) is an average student who finds himself repeatedly being abused by bullies who like to steal his money and throw him into dumpsters. Bastian's mother is dead and both he and his father are still trying to cope with the loss. However, Bastian's father is a realist and thinks that Bastian spends too much time drawing pictures, reading books, and daydreaming. He wants his son to buckle down and get serious about school and life. He means well, but his advice doesn't do much to improve Bastian's condition. Eventually Bastian ends up meeting a strange bookstore owner that leaves a book, "The Neverending Story", where Bastian is able to borrow it. Bastian sneaks away to the attic of his school, locks himself in, and begins reading. The story is a fascinating tale about a place called Fantasia, a seeming endless world filled with countless creatures of every shape and size. Fantasia is under attack by an unknown force known as the Nothing that destroys everything in its path. The Childlike Empress (Tami Stronach) selects the mighty warrior from the plains people, Atreyu (Noah Hathaway) to go on a journey and find the one person who can save Fantasia from total annihilation. Atreyu sets forth on a long, difficult journey, traveling all over Fantasia, but no one seems capable of helping him. As Atreyu journeys, Bastian secretly accompanies him and shares in all of his adventures. The book reads like none other that Bastian has ever read and it seems that he is a part of the story. As the Nothing grows stronger, Bastian has to decide if he will give into reality of what he sees around him or allow his imagination take control.

In THE NEVERENDING STORY II Bastian (Jonathan Brandis) is once again transported to Fantasia. Bastian is no longer threatened by bullies, but is instead taunted by his classmates when he joins the dive team. His father (John Wesley Shipp) misguidedly prods Bastian into overcoming his fears. Frustrated, Bastian returns to Mr. Koreander's bookstore and though he is warned that the story in "The Neverending Story" doesn't remain the same, Bastian borrows the book and ends up returning to Fantasia. Upon entering Fantasia, Bastian finds that he has the symbol of the childlike Empress, Auryn, around his neck. He is informed by the giant bird Nimbly (Martin Umbach) that anytime he makes a wish, the power in Auryn will make the wish come true. However, there is a dark secret to Auryn. To save Fantasia, Bastian must find out Auryn's secret, defeat the evil witch Xayide, and stop the Emptiness from consuming Fantasia.

Of the two movies, THE NEVERENDING STORY is a far superior film that its sequel.

The DVD doesn't offer many extras. On THE NEVERENDING STORY side of the disc, there are some notes about the book and characters and a trailer for the film. THE NEVERENDING STORY II side has a trailer, cast & crew list, and a word scramble game called "Bastian's Challenge." Also, both movies are shown in full screen and not widescreen.

1 out of 5 stars FOOLSCREEN - Obscene Hack Job of a Double Feature.......2007-08-06

Yes, I have to agree with the reviewers above, FOOLSCREEN is better overall if YOU ARE RETARDED! They REALLY need to throw away their 10inch B&W televisions and step into the present. Widescreen HDTV in Hi Def. We dont need to hack the art to make it fit the frame folks, you CAN buy a frame to match the size of the art :) Do yourselves a favor and go out and purchase both of these films seperately and watch them in glorious widescreen, as the Director's made them. When you watch FOOLSCREEN videos, you are missing the sides and top and bottom of the picture!

Jeez, you'd think reviews on Amazon were from WalMart customers!

4 out of 5 stars The First was Great the Second was Okay.......2007-06-01

The first movie was fantastic!!! Something that I like to see over and over again. It is about a boy who gets this weird book from the library, starts reading it and that's where the story begins.
The second and third aren't really enjoyable but... they are okay.

4 out of 5 stars NeverEnding Story.......2007-05-23

Every kid should watch this movie. It's good fantasy fun. I really liked this movie as a child.

Part of growing up is discovering something that inspires a true passion within and allowing that passion to guide one's actions and choices. The process of self-discovery isn't easy, and when 15-year-old Patrick McCardle (High School Musical's Zac Efron) realizes that playing baseball is more his father's dream than his own, it's an unlikely friendship with old man Houston Jones (Bill Cobbs), a recluse and horse trainer, that inspires Patrick's newfound passion for the exciting world of horse jumping. Patrick and his father (William R. Moses) clash over Patrick's decision to give up baseball and spend time training for the Derby Cup race with Houston, but eventually Patrick and his father come to a mutual understanding and gain a whole new sense of respect for one another as they begin to really talk about and listen to each other's dreams and desires. The road to becoming a derby rider is difficult, but as Houston and Patrick work together, the two share dreams and disappointments and become incredibly close. In the end, Houston, a most unlikely role model, winds up having a profoundly positive impact on Patrick's life both on and off the racetrack. (Ages 5 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

4 out of 5 stars Pleasant family film.......2007-08-10

15-year old Patrick (Zac Efron) is new in town and has problems: He can't seem to please his jock father (William R. Moses) and he runs afoul of Randy, the town bully, when both boys are attracted to the same pretty girl. Patrick's only friend is one-time horse trainer and long-time alcoholic, Houston Jones (Bill Cobbs), who sees something special in the boy. Houston gives him a horse and trains him to ride in the State Steeplechase Cup race, but Randy, the reigning champ, decides to make Patrick's life miserable.

This low-budget but pleasant 2005 film was never shown in theatres, but has been released on DVD following Zac Efron's mega-successes in High School Musical (Encore Edition) and Hairspray. There's no denying Efron's Tiger Beat-cuteness, and he does a fine job in an undemanding role, but if you want to see a real actor, take a look at Bill Cobbs. He's been playing small character parts in TV and movies for years, but this time he's the star and absolutely owns the screen. His craggy face and gravelly voice masterfully express the only real emotion in the film and he's a pleasure to watch.

The story plays like an After School Special; all obstacles are easily overcome - the kid goes from non-rider to race winner, bonds with his father, and gets the girl - all in a matter of weeks. Adults may find it predictable and a bit bland, but the wholesome message about finding your passion and working hard for it makes "The Derby Stallion" just right for family viewing.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Movie.......2007-07-12

Our granddaughter is 6 years old, and loves anything to do with horses. She has watched this movie many, many times. Its a great story for the family also.

4 out of 5 stars Great Family Film!.......2007-06-29

I was encouraged to purchase this DVD by my fifteen-year-old sister, she's been a big fan of Zac Efron's from "High School Musical". She was not disappointed - we both loved it (plus Zac is really cute)! It's a sweet story and has a lot of positive messages. What a pleasure to sit down and see a nice family film again... it's a rarity. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Wins Our Derby.......2007-06-25

With all the junk out there, it's nice to watch a movie with such positive values and one which can be shared with the whole family. Zac Efron is endearing -- it's not surprising he has soared to stardom in "High School Musical." And Bill Cobbs as the wise old horseman is great. I loved the mentor chemistry between them. There is a lot to like in this movie and I recommend it heartily.

3 out of 5 stars Not what I was hoping for..........2007-06-24

The Derby Stallion could have been done alot better. It appeared to be a very low budget film. Its about this boy who decides he wants to ride steeplechase and convinces his parents to allow him to. The riding was very sloppy and some of the sences of him first riding were un realistic and alot of it was put into slow motion, like when he was first learning to jump. The two horses that played in the movie were also two completley different colors. The movie idea was good, but they could have spent more time on teaching the actor to ride and handle horses instead of what appeared to be a very rushed movie. Not a good choice for people who know a thing or two about horses.

Now and forever a favorite among kids, this 1990 comedy written by John Hughes (The Breakfast Club) and directed by Chris Columbus (Mrs. Doubtfire) ushered Macaulay Culkin onto the screen as a troubled 8-year-old who doesn't comfortably mesh with his large family. He's forced to grow a little after being accidentally left behind when his folks and siblings fly off to Paris. A good-looking boy, Culkin lights up the screen during several funny sequences, the most famous of which finds him screaming for joy when he realizes he's unsupervised in his own house. A bit wooden with dialogue, the then-little star's voice could grate on the nerves (especially in long, wise-child passages of pure bromide), but he unquestionably carries the film. Billie Bird and John Candy show up as two of the interesting strangers Culkin's character meets. Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern are entertainingly cartoonish as thieves, but the ensuing violence once the little hero decides to keep them out of his house is over-the-top. --Tom Keogh

Accidentally left behind when his family rushes off on a Christmas vacation, Kevin gets busy decorating the house for the holidays. But he's not decking the halls with tinsel and holly. Two bumbling burglars are trying to break in, and Kevin's rigging a bewildering battery of booby traps to welcome them!

4 out of 5 stars Great Christmas film!.......2007-08-05

The Home Alone movie series is probably the most entertaining, comedic series that both kids and adults will enjoy. The jokes, actors, and tricks are sure to provide a couple of hours of good family fun!

So what's this movie about? Basically, a boy named Kevin is seperated from his family when they accidentally leave him at home during the rush to get to the airport to go on their vacation to Paris. Kevin believes that he made his family disappear and he must fend for himself. Kevin eventually comes in contact with two robbers who are planning to rob Kevin's house. He comes up with boobytraps in order to stop them. Will the boobytraps stop the robbers? Will Kevin ever see his family again? These questions are answered at the end of this film.

So what's to like about this movie? First, I must point out that the acting is rather good for a family film. Of course we have Macaulay Culkin (who plays Kevin) and Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern (who play the robbers). All three do an amazing job playing their characters and even the rest of Kevin's family add a touch of extra personality to the film. Second, when it comes to movies that remind me of Christmas, Home Alone is one of them. I remember watching this movie when I was younger and being really excited about Christmas. This movie always comes out at Christmastime and my family loves watching it. Lastly, my absolute favorite part of the movie is the boobytrap scenes. Lots of laughs and even some twists.

And what's not to like? Look, this movie is not Oscar-worthy in my opinion. It is only meant to cause some chuckles and provide a couple of hours of entertainment. Don't go into this movie expecting too much.

The bottom line is this: If you're looking for a good family-oriented movie, check out Home Alone.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Hilarious Exploits of an Eight-year Old Boy.......2007-06-12

This comedy is loaded with ironies. The boy wishes that his family would disappear. For a time, he gets his wish. The boy, Kevin, considered to be incompetent, does exploits far beyond his age. Left alone by a big family who goes to Paris for Christmas, he takes care of the big house, does grocery shopping, and stymies two burglars. The burglars think that they will have an easy time with the boy, but instead get the hassle of their lives. A neighbor man, supposedly a murderer who used his snow shovel to kill his relatives, actually lost his relatives to an old, long-unresolved argument. As a further irony, he uses his snow shovel on the burglars. The mother, thinking that she is a bad parent for having forgotten her own son, learns from the Polka troupe (that is driving her home) that many of its members hardly ever see their children in the first place. Finally, the family, divided by spiteful comments, is brought together in their frantic efforts to return home to Kevin.

5 out of 5 stars Grestest Film! Decent Special Features!.......2007-05-22

This is one of the greatest films of all time. It will be around forever! I was hoping this edition of the DVD would have special features with more shots and footage from the set from back in 1990. However, I'm sure that since it was 17 years ago most of the behind the scenes footage from the filming was lost. Most of the special features are just interviews with the people who put the film together, talking about what they did for the film. Be sure to listen to the DVD commentary with Macaulay Culkin and Chris Columbus. It's interesting to watch deleted footage that didn't make the film as well. Overall, I wish the special features were more elaborate and more on-set showing the actual shooting of the film, but since it was so long ago, I don't blame them for not having it on file anymore.

5 out of 5 stars A Holiday Classic Has Been Saved.......2007-03-29

The first edition of this dvd was ok but lacked in the special features area and dvd quality. Thankfully the Family Fun edition has been released and the quality is excellent. This new edition has 5.1 sound and the picture quality is so much more crisper. This dvd is loaded with special features. It's hard to believe that Home Alone came out more than 16 years ago and has stood the test of time and is destined to be a holiday classic. Great fun movie...

Platoon put writer-turned-director Oliver Stone on the Hollywood map; it is still his most acclaimed and effective film, probably because it is based on Stone's firsthand experience as an American soldier in Vietnam. Chris (Charlie Sheen) is an infantryman whose loyalty is tested by two superior officers: Sergeant Elias (Willem Dafoe), a former hippie humanist who really cares about his men (this was a few years before he played Jesus in Martin Scorsese's The Last Temptation of Christ), and Sergeant Barnes (Tom Berenger), a moody, macho soldier who may have gone over to the dark side. The personalities of the two sergeants correspond to their combat drugs of choice--pot for Elias and booze for Barnes. Stone has become known for his sledgehammer visual style, but in this film it seems perfectly appropriate. His violent and disorienting images have a terrifying immediacy, a you-are-there quality that gives you a sense of how things may have felt to an infantryman in the jungles of Vietnam. Platoon won Oscars for best picture and director. --Jim Emerson

Description

Winner* of 4 Academy AwardsÂ(r), including Best Picture, and based on the first-hand experience of OscarÂ(r)-winning** director Oliver Stone, Platoon is powerful, intense and starkly brutal. "Harrowingly realistic and completely convincing" (Leonard Maltin), it is "a dark, unforgettable memorial" (The Washington Post) to every soldier whose innocence was lost in the war-torn jungles of Vietnam. Chris Taylor (Charlie Sheen) is a young, naive American who, upon his arrival in Vietnam, quickly discovers that he must do battle not only with the Viet Cong, but also with the gnawing fear, physical exhaustion and intense anger growing within him. While his two commanding officers (OscarÂ(r)-nominated*** Tom Berenger and Willem Dafoe) draw a fine line between the war they wage against the enemy and the one they fight with each other, the conflict, chaos and hatred permeate Taylor, suffocating his realities and numbing his feelings to man's highest value life.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Real or not?.......2007-08-02

I was born during the Vietnam war years, and have no idea if what Stone depicts in this movie is realistic or not; however, it is my favorite. There is so much more to this movie than many realize. The dynamics of the relationships between characters, especially Sgt. Elias and Sgt. Barnes are like taughtly pulled violin strings ready to snap. In fact, they do snap in an extremely dramatic and lethal manner. The scene where Sgt. Elias is literally running for his life is made even more heart wrenching when coupled with Barber's Adagio for Strings. This particular piece of music is haunting in it's self; but with the death scene of Sgt. Elias it is emotionally devestating. This particular piece of music portrays the despair, sorrow, and isolation felt by Chris Taylor (Charlie Sheen's character), and probably many men who were truly there.

I will admit, not having been there, not learning much about Vietnam in school (it was a topic quickly glossed over), and having an older brother who was in Vietnam not talk about it, does lend itself to misinformation/misimpressions gathered from films such as this one. Having said that, what I take away from the movie is the Hell too many men experienced, and how the Vietnam war affected all of us in ways we don't even realize. Is it real? I believe many parts of it are not, as a whole, but did those things happen? Unfortunaley they probably did to some extent.

I watch this movie to remind myself of the atrocities done to man by man, and to remind myself why I honor our service men and women. With every watching I am humbled and awed by the sacrifices so many men gave. That is the value of Platoon.

1 out of 5 stars A Movie That Anti-War Media Loved!.......2007-06-04

First off, this film is fiction and what happened in the movie is not totally square with the facts of this war nor does it protray Vietnam veterans as they really were. It is a liberal attempt to justify their anti-war stance and to show America and the world that all of us Vietnam veterans were out murdering people and burning villages. The plot of this movie does not fly - and yet so may people think this is one of the best war films ever made. It shows what people think of that war and what they wish to keep believing about the men who fought it.

This film helps feed the media's image of crazzy veterans. I was offended by the movie but even more so by the huge reception it has gotten as a "realistic movie" about the war. They could have filmed this at Berkeley and cast the actors from the Cal student body.

I know it is just a movie but it serves no veteran - and is not healing for this nation. It is a very popular film, there is no doubt about it - and the acting is done well. The action is realistic in the battle scenes - but it is plot and the message of the film that gets in the way of me viewing this as nothing more than another attempt to make veterans look bad. I am not against anti-war films - I am just against films that demean the images of veterans.

I served my tour of duty in Nam from October 1966- October 1967 - I was wounded and saw my fair share of combat as a crew-chief/ door-gunner on a Huey. I have been helping my fellow veterans now for 3 decades trying to adjust from that war and our poor welcome back home - this film hurts that effort and is an insult!

Do us all a favor and do not buy this film and enrich those who made this propaganda. Reach out and help those veterans coming home from this war on terrorism - they are in need of your support! Let us not do to them what this country did to us Nam veterans!

5 out of 5 stars POLITICS IN JUNGLE BOOTS - A VIETNAM WAR DEPICTION THROUGH MOVIES.......2007-06-01

BY: Fernando de Mello Pimentel

The world we see today, thrusted by a globalized set of integrated political and commercial trading practices, is arguably very dissimilar from the bi-polarized and ideologically lugubrious background of the 20th Century's post World War II years, also known as the "Cold War". At a time when an imaginary line divided the globe in two geopolitical blocks -the capitalist and socialist -, the United States and the former U.S.S.R where the two major players at the chessboard in charge of the strategy for the rest of the World's fate. Both sides designated what was known at the time as their "Spheres of Influence", which in practical terms meant that strategic alliances with other ideologically close countries were drawn with the sole purpose of achieving world-wide domination. Such concept was clearly materialized with the construction of the Berlin Wall (1961-1989), also known as "Iron Curtain", which literarally divided the world into zones of capitalist and communist ideologies.

America's role at the time was to secure the deployment of capitalist economical aid, political influence and military support to other areas of the world in detriment of Soviet communist regime expansion, and vice-versa. The Cuban Missile Crisis (1962), the wars of Korea (1950-1953), Vietnam (1959-1975) and the Soviet-Afghan (1979-1989) and the constant and widespread fear of nuclear annihilation - at the verge of a massive arms race - were all under the spotlight of world foreign affair policies promoted by both parties. The Vietnam War was perhaps one of the most intriguing outcomes of this conflicted era. It has been increasingly depicted in countless hollywood productions and television series ever since the mid 70's.

Debuting in 1978, in this sphere of cinematographic story telling, is Michael Cimino's epic "The Deer Hunter", which describes the friendship of 3 Pennsylvania steel workers of Rusyn ancestry. As strong and realistic as this tale is, perhaps no other film is as psychological and nerve-wrecking as Francis Ford Coppola's "Apocalypse Now", with its intense narrative about an american special forces elite soldier having gone totally insane in the jungles of south asia and having decided to take matters by his own hands and methods. This 1979 motion picture has stirred up audiences around the globe by portraying the horrors of war and its tormenting effects on both civilians and military personnel. Embracing all of this chaotic nature is the fictional Nung River, which metaphorically stands for Colonel Kurtz's gradual but irreversible psychological navigation towards a derranging stream of consciousness which undeniably led him to cross over to the dark side of mental sanity.

While "The Deer Hunter" was a film about friendship ties dilacerated by mental breakdown caused by imprisonment in Vietnamese P.O.W camps and the unbearable hardships of coming home, and "Apocalypse Now" was a harshly psychological metaphor for military desertion and misconduction of War, Oliver Stone's 1986 auto-biographical "Platoon" is the definite account on the sheer loss of innocence every young enlisted man underwent during his tour of duty. In the movie, Stone explores the 25th Infantry Division's Bravo Company Platoon as a microcosm which emblematizes the Pentagon's controversial and misleading military policy to restrain communist expansion in southeast asia.

Political and ideological clashes erupt between the outfit's two main leaders - Staff Sergeant Barnes and Sergeant Elias - triggering a polarizing conflict within the platoon which precipitates the decay of morale. The inoperative Lieutenant Wolfe is incapable of controlling the ongoing joust within his group. His total lack of authority over the platoon is accurately portrayed throughout the movie and is somehow Stone's testimony on America's incompetence in directing the war.

Politics is a recurring theme in "Platoon" which uncompromisingly displays the military's unquenchable thirst for power. While Sergeant Barnes is the personification of the ambitious quest for unlimited power, Sergeant O'Neil represents a submissive class of `boot-licking" scoundrels who will give unconditional support to their superior officers in exchange of personal benefits. On the extreme opposite end lies Sergeant Elias, a hippie humanist who cares for his fellow men as if they were his own blood. Elias is an authentic crusader who has been in country long enough - at least three complete tours - to become completely acquainted to the devastating sub-products of war and thus form a solid contrary opinion about it - traces of pacifism can actually be inferred by his non-violent behaviour and clear pursuit of escapism. His natural leadership skills spontaneously blossom as he constantly finds himself supporting and coaching rookies who have just been freshly shipped into the combat zone. On the other hand, Sergeant Barnes gains similar respect from his men by casting terror among both foes and friendlies - which pretty much builds his reputation on being feared. Although morally distinct in character, both leaders are equally sharp on combat skills and military tactics.

In addition to the testimonial nature of the film, "Platoon" is also renowned for its scenes of graphic and verbal violence which have been warmly captured by Stone while in duty. "Platoon" is arguably one of the most authentic and visceral movies to depict the tragedies and misfortunes of an entire generation of Americans living during the cold-war era. It also realistically depicts the crude "Politics in Jungle Boots" of a nation struggling to find its role in a Post-World War II nazi-fascist free world.

***** - A CINEMATOGRAPHIC MASTERPIECE!!!

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Vietnam movie of all time!.......2007-05-26

I'm a huge fan of war movies, especially vietnam era ones. Probably because I've been in war and I like to see it depicted on film. This movie does a wonderful job of showing what the vietnam war was like through one particular army platoon. Now I read several reviews that discredited this movie becuase it didn't depict the various men serving in vietnam in a good military manner and I will say that Stone does highlight the drugs and insubordination alot but that stuff did go, a good bit from what I've read and heard from vets. lets face it, people want to see action and drama, not boring robot, do what your told all the time, every time. No matter what people might say, I still think this is an awesome movie and a must see for ANYONE.

5 out of 5 stars The Nightmare of War.......2007-05-24

I have watched Platoon more than any other war movie. So much so that I've had to give it a rest over the last few years.
Why is it so good?
Perhaps because it is the most realistic (certainly Vietnam) war movie ever made. Its based on Oliver Stones own experiences in Vietnam. Now I doubt whether there were actually two so clearly good and bad characters, as represented by Willem Dafoe and Tom Beringer in the film, but it is the spark between these two that creates much of the films atmosphere.
There are quite a few scenes in this film, such as when the Charlie Sheen character wakes up in the middle of the night (in the jungle), that are wonderfully done. You really get an idea of just how scary being a soldier might be.
I'm also sure that the film would not not have been as successful as it was, without its marvellous soundtrack. Most noteably Samuel Barbers 'Adagio for Strings'. This piece of music alone adds an extra dimension to the scenes it is used in. A very haunting and sad piece of music.
The ending of the film is perhaps the only weak point, but it is a minor quibble about a very powerful and moving film.

A grandly entertaining, old-fashioned adventure based on the Rudyard Kipling short story, The Man Who Would Be King is the kind of rousing epic about which people said, even in 1975, "Wow! They don't make 'em like that anymore!" When director John Huston (The Maltese Falcon, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, The African Queen) first started trying to make the film, with Gable and Bogart, the project was derailed by the latter's death. It was a few decades before Huston was able to finally realize his dream movie--and with an unimprovable cast. Sean Connery and Michael Caine are, respectively, Daniel Dravot and Peachy Carnahan, a pair of lovably roguish British soldiers who set out to make their fortunes by conning the priests of remote Kafiristan into making them kings. It's a rollicking tale, an epic satire of imperialism, and the good-natured repartee shared by Caine and Connery is pure gold. In today's screen adventures, humor is usually imposed on the material by a writer or director trying to make some kind of cleverly self-aware comment ("Hey, we know it's a movie!"), but that sort of jokiness can create so much ironic distance that it pushes the audience right out of the picture. Huston lets the humor emerge naturally from the characters, for whom we wind up caring more deeply than we ever expected. The digital video disc includes a wonderful documentary on the making of the film. --Jim Emerson

4 out of 5 stars I had to own this classic.......2007-08-30

I love this movie and owned it in VHS. I purchased the DVD as an upgrade.

3 out of 5 stars Great movie, poor DVD.......2007-07-23

I love this movie but found the DVD very disappointing. The (mono) sound quality is particularly bad. Maybe that's the fault of the original, but I doubt it was quite this bad - this was not a low budget movie, and many other movies of the same age and much older sound far superior.

5 out of 5 stars The Man Who Would Be King.......2007-07-05

Director Huston had wanted to do this project for years (originally with Gable and Bogart), but only got the chance in the mid-seventies. It's hard to think of better casting for the two rogue adventurers than Connery and Caine, whose real-life friendship helped spark a genuine, often amusing on-screen chemistry. A deft combination of humor and suspense, the film's climax is unforgettable. Plummer lends solid support as author Kipling. A later Huston treasure-trove.

5 out of 5 stars ITS A CLASSIC!!!.......2007-06-27

Sean Connery? Good! Micheal Caine? Good! and with a Gurkha! My Dad summed it up one school night in my youth. "Your staying up for this one son, its a classic!" Two retired British Army NCO's, Mason's, Alexander the Great, Khafiristan, Martini rifles, and did I mention the Gurkha? This movie brought a fine Rudyard Kipling tale to life with all the action and adventure, gain and loss that you can ask for. "Let's go find safety in battle." is in my top ten of best movie lines. I recommend this movie for anyone who stares off in the distance from time to time wondering if there are any adventures left out there.

5 out of 5 stars Top boys own yarn.......2007-06-06

This great film based on the Book by Kipling is a superbly made ripping yarn. Two rogue British ex-soldiers decide they would like to take over a country. This of course isn't as simple as it seems, even some 100+ years ago.

How they go about this is portrayed brilliantly by Caine and Connery. Made a few years after his last Bond film, Connery dominates the screen the whole time, but Michael Caine pushes him close and produces an at times marvellous comedic performance. I am sure Caine was influenced indirectly and directly by John Huston in this regard.

The other reason for this films greatness is of course John Huston. The direction is a lesson to all modern directors on how to grip an audiences attention whithout the need for CGI or an explosion every five minutes. Full credit to however was responsible for the sound as this makes a huge contribution towards the end.

Somehow I had missed this movie until this year. Now I've seen it I want to see it again and again. Strongly recommended.

The controversial, Reagan-era invasion of Grenada by U.S. troops is, oddly enough, at the center of this initially interesting story of a seasoned Marine sergeant (Clint Eastwood) routinely insulted by younger officers for being a symbol of the war that America "lost" in Vietnam. Looking for both a victory and a little redemption, Eastwood's character trains a squadron of scrappy pups and turns them into fighting grunts, just in time to follow White House orders and take the little island. Marsha Mason plays Eastwood's love interest, and Mario Van Peebles is funny as an undisciplined con artist who joins Clint's men and finally catches the spirit after getting his butt kicked a few times. --Tom Keogh

Description

After serving in the Korean and Vietnam Wars, Gunnery Sergeant Tom Highway finds himself with a collection of medals and no war to fight. Training a new group of Marines that are more green than mean, Highway complicates matters by attempting to reconcile with his former wife, Aggie. Rekindling the spark in his failed marriage won't be easy with a crisis brewing in Grenada and his pathetic platoon far from ready.

My product arrive as advertised by the seller in excellent condition. And the price was very reasonable.

5 out of 5 stars Heartbreak Ridge.......2007-08-01

Being a military person myself, I must admit I've ran into a few people whom actually live like this... it's all they live for and most go overboard with it - so to see Gunny show some care for his troops was good. I love this movie for many reasons, Mario Van whatever is not one of them.

5 out of 5 stars Clint Deserved a Promotion.......2007-07-20

Clint Eastwood's "Heartbreak Ridge" is an outstanding movie that was actually ahead of its time in giving us insight into how much one has to sacrifice when completing a career in the military. The movie is set in 1983, and Eastwood plays a grizzled gunnery sergeant in the USMC. He's been in just about every conflict since the battle on the frozen hill of Korea, from which the title is taken. It's a pretty typical military movie, with veteran Clint taking a bunch of low performing gyrines and whipping them into a top-notch unit. The characters are well cast, espeically the commanding officer, who gets his just desserts in a one-on-one faceoff with Eastwood. The subplot, detailing Eastwood's failed marriage to gorgeous Marsha Mason is perfectly handled as well. You can't help rooting for Clint and her to get back together, but the relationship is handled in very adult manner, leaving that question unanswered untilthe final sequence. The climax, set against the backdrop of the Granada invasion, reminds us all of the high risks our soldiers take to every day keep us all free. It also marks the transitionary phase toward increased professionalism our military was going through during the years of neglect after the fall of Saigon. As a vet who served during that time, I felt especially vindicated when I first saw this movie back when it was released in the theaters. Although I suspect it never got its due from the critics, it's a classic and can be enjoyed over and over. Great job, Clint.

5 out of 5 stars Clint Eastwood & the old breed of Marines.......2007-05-13

This is a wonderful movie...showing the difference between the "old breed" and "new breed" of marines. I have seen this MANY times. I know some of the quotes by heart, and started using one of them from time to time.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Movie.......2007-01-15

I bought this for my brother because he wanted it. We ended up watching it and I was really pulled into this movie. This is not your typical war movie, but more about how Clint transforms a bunch of poor soldiers into fighting men. A fine movie!
