My grandson likes it-not quite as much as "The Best of Elmo", but watches most of it.

Elmo's World is a really cute DVD. My little brother and sister love it! I have heard the songs so many times I sing them in my head when I'm not even watching it. If you have little kids you must buy Elmo's World! If your kids are a little older like me the craft DVD called Crafty Fun will be great for them.

Description

If you want to learn Hip Hop, Kelly Peters will Make It Happen for you! Kelly's "One Step at a Time" teaching method introduces new production techniques that make it easy to learn even the hardest moves. It's simple to follow because he reverses the picture, so it's just like looking at a dance studio mirror. As a result, when Kelly says "Go right", he moves to your right! He also takes time to break the movements down, very slow, so you don't have to keep rewinding and he uses lots of close ups, slow motion, and split screen so you really get the details of the moves. Kelly teaches the building blocks of true Hip Hop which you can use to make your own combinations. He also explains the elements and history of Hip Hop culture. Kelly is joined by his crew of real kids who help demonstrate dances like The Freak, The Prep and the Bus Stop. The DVD includes special features and three bonus moves: The Harlem Shake, The Wave and The Baby Freeze.

3 out of 5 stars Your Wedding Reception Video Is Better... Trust Me.......2007-07-08

My godson and his brother partied to this DVD for about a week then grew tired with the corny music and hum-drum routines. Some of the dance moves are mature and suggestive but most children will have no idea about the steps they'll just innocently follow along. I'm not certain whether or not this is a good thing. If I'd had the opportunity to preview this DVD I definitely would not have purchased it however, since I did buy it I can say that it was worth the money for the few days of rest it afforded my friend and her husband. The more I think about it they might have simply played the video of their wedding reception for free and gotten a better response from the boys.

3 out of 5 stars Reality Vs Impressions.......2007-07-03

This video was decent at best. The dance instruction was very well done; however, the dance moves themselves were somewhat bland and basic. The dance moves seemed more fit for young teens or children and would probably be considered embarassing if an adult ever performed these moves in public. The video is more basic than I imagined, and it stays basic throughout the entire video. The bonus moves at the end were cool though.

5 out of 5 stars Great for the Dance Impaired.......2007-05-13

I really loved the 'split screen with front and rear camera angles' technique. My only beef was that the 45 degree rear angle sometimes obscured the instructor's arm/leg movements. But I was usually able to switch my attention to the "mirror image" whenever this happened. Very nicely paced for the those of us who need to see several repetitions of a movement, and, even though I couldn't always keep up with the background dancers in the 'put it all together' part of each segment, I had fun trying.

4 out of 5 stars too basic .. good for kids ..........2007-05-13

I partially agree with one of the reviewers who gave this product a one star. This DVD is not for you if you are already into Hip Hop. It just "educates" you about hiphop and as the product description says, it teaches you the most basic building blocks of hip hop like The Freak, The Prep, the Bus Stop and a few other steps. Go for it if you haven't danced before.

I think the cover photo is misguiding because it makes it look more advanced. Read the product description well before buying it. Do not conclude anything just from the reviews and the DVD cover or title. I take out one star for the misleading cover and title.

5 out of 5 stars all you really need .......2007-05-12

Some say this video only gives you the basics, but unless you wants to be a really showy dancer, you'll get an excellent repertoire moves. You can modify most of them even by changing angles. My ab muscles are really liking it too!

Awesome video- I highly recommend it!

The linguistic ballet of the crossword puzzle and the obsessive minds that wrestle with them are a source of delight in the charming documentary Wordplay. Though there's no story, the movie has a definite hero: Will Shortz, the editor of the New York Times crossword puzzle, universally acknowledged as the pinnacle of crosswords. Shortz comes across as clever but modest; though he's at the top of his particular world, he retains a bemused perspective on that world's limitations. Though speckled with celebrities from former President Bill Clinton to the Indigo Girls, the most engaging interviews are with puzzle creator Merl Reagle (who gives a fascinating on-screen demonstration of how he starts making a puzzle) and the witty and garrulous commentary by the former public editor for the Times, Daniel Okrent. Like many recent documentaries, Wordplay is built around a competition: The American Crossword Puzzle Tournament, an annual event started by Shortz and embraced by people who have devoted an alarming amount of their brain space to filling squares with letters. Though the movie is not as emotionally involving as Spellbound--still the ne plus ultra of nerdy documentaries--Wordplay's window into its particular subculture will be enjoyable to non-crossword fans as well as committed puzzleheads.--Bret Fetzer

Description

Witness the inner workings of Will Shortz, NY Times Editor and NPR Puzzle Master, and his brilliant, entertaining and often hilarious contributors as well as surprising celebrity fans. Wordplay takes us through the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament where almost five hundred competitors battled it out for the title "Crossword Champ" and showed their true colors along the way.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Entertainment.......2007-09-13

This movie about serious crossword creators and solvers informs, entertains, and builds to an appropriate climax, the annual Crossword Championships in a cookie cutter hotel in Stamford, CT. Everyone involved -- including President Bill Clinton, his erstwhile opponent Bob Dole, and Jon Stewart -- fits nicely into the mosaic of the story. (The puzzle on the day of the Clinton-Dole election is, in its own small-corner-of-the-universe way, a masterpiece of the art form.) Sure, the players have this little obsession about racing the clock to solve really hard crosswords, but they are also genuinely likeable people and this viewer, at least, came away impressed with their abilities, their sense of humor about their off-beat passion, and, not least, their articulate intelligence. As one who can barely scrape through the Times's Monday and Tuesday puzzles on occasion, I salute them. Wordplay honors them too and does so very, very well. It's a must-see for anyone who's ever puzzled.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting but more so if you love crossword puzzles.......2007-07-10

Like Spellbound or Trekkies, this documentary tries to elevate a rather nerdy hobby to the level of high art by exploring the people involved and the obsessive nature of their hobby. As with those two documentaries, you are probably more inclined to enjoy the movie if you share the obsession. Unlike those two documentaries, you may not find this terribly compelling otherwise.

While it has many interesting things about it (the history of the "rules" of Crossword puzzles, the competitions, the crossword puzzle that managed to make BobDole and Clinton equally viable in 1996 for instance) ultimately it's a documentary about people who sit down and write words on square boxes. Jon Stewart, Bill Clinton and the Indigo Girls (Blue state bias?) are normally entertaining personalities, but even they can't make the act of writing words on a piece of paper interesting. You have to give the director credit for trying though. Jon Stewart's mini-freakout is amusing. The shot of the clue and the letters hitting the blank page in computer animation are fun. However, ultimately it feels a lot like those movies where they are "hacking into the system" and trying to make the act of sitting at a computer typing exciting. It's not. Sorry. It's just not.

However, the competition that takes up the last third of the movie is well worth the price. The people involved aren't just obsessed but they are warm and friendly. Sure, trash talking Crossword puzzle fanatics would be funnier, but the fact of the matter is, is that these people like each other; they share an obsession and they genuinely wish each other well - even when losing to each other in these competitions. That amount of camraderie involved in the competition is a rare thing, no matter how many "sportsmanship" lectures get imbibed. To see it as a natural byproduct of the competition is rather sweet.

Still, this is a movie that only Crossword fanatics can love. Those of us who find our joy elsewhere can buy bargain DVDs and watch it in small doses. All of it is good, but none of it is terribly compelling.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful..............2007-07-05

Since I was very young, I have had a love affair with language. Words are such a powerful form of expression [in writing and verbal communication]. Words are a reflection of our times, as well as our culture. Few people know this as well as puzzlemaster for the New York Times, Will Shortz. He is the man behind the weekly crossword puzzle that appears in the publication and also is heard nationally on NPR, every weekend, with his puzzle quiz. Not only are crossword puzzles great for the mind, but they have a huge following that transcends generations and socio/economic backgrounds. For the first time, we see a more intimate side of Mr. Shortz, his formative years, as well as an annual puzzle competition that I would best describe as the Crossword Olympics. It truly is a competitive sport. There are also great, humorous moments in this film with banter from comedian Jon Stewart, former United States President Bill Clinton, the Indigo Girls and a slew of other fans of Will Shortz and his puzzle.

This film was so well done, and, it will [no doubt] draw comparisons to SPELLBOUND, which follows the National Spelling Bee and the young contestants who intensively study the English language by reading the dictionary, practicing with flash cards and devoting their lives to mastering spelling. WORDPLAY is different in that the first half of the film, I would say, is more focused on Will Shortz, his following of crossword puzzle fans and how the puzzles are created. We even learn about the formula that they must use, as a template to derive the correct number of letters across, as well as down. The puzzles are also reflective of current events, developments in pop culture, policy and politics. They really are a sign of the times. The second half of the film shifts its focus to the contestants pursuing the Crossword Puzzle Championship. It'll have you biting your nails, too. The director really captured the tension and suspense that intensifies as each contestant aspires to be the champion. This is definitely a great film worth watching. You'll walk away feeling that you learned something and also had a good time in the process!

4 out of 5 stars This Movie Won't Let You Down - Or Leave You Cross.......2007-06-12

First we had a movie about Scrabble competitions, now here comes a movie about the ultimate crossword competition - organized by Will Short, master crossword puzzle creator.

This film doesn't quite let us get to know its competitors in the same way the Scrabble documentary let us get to know its enthusiasts. But this film shows a lot more besides the mere competition. It shows who designs many of "The New York Times" crossword puzzles and how the designers attack the problem. You'll learn a lot about crossword puzzle-design you probably didn't know. For example - computer programs generally aren't used. Short and others still do all the work out of their own brains. And did you know every puzzle must be symmetrical?

Then we see several celebrities at work solving a daily puzzle. Bill Clinton might have been more popular as President if he had run the Country as judiciously as he solves a crossword puzzle. He philosophizes as he goes along, saying that a puzzle should be approached in the same way you approach a problem of State - you scan for what you know first - then you slowly work your way out from there.

Jon Stewart attacks a problem as if he were in a hockey game - slapping, cursing, jabbing at the page. At first I thought he was putting on a show of aggression for the camera - but no, that's really his all-out way of doing the daily crossword.

The documentary briefly discusses the origins of the crossword puzzle in the U.S. I would have liked to hear a lot more about the history of the puzzle and how the character of clues might have changed over the decades. And I was disappointed to find no discussion at all of the British tradition of crossword puzzles. How and why did the Brits develop their puzzles along such a different path? In the U.S., despite some punning around the theme of each puzzle, most of the clues call for straightforward synonyms. But in England, almost all the clues involve elaborate combinations of anagrams, puns, rebuses, homonyms, the works. What does this say, if anything, about the difference between British and American culture? And what about crosswords in other cultures, other languages? I wanted more! Maybe as DVD bonus material!

Still, this film provides an interesting look into crosswording a la "The New York Times." You can't be down or cross when you have a fresh puzzle facing you in the morning - or after you've finished watching this film.

5 out of 5 stars word nerds, unite!.......2007-06-09

"The excitement is palpable!" gushed NPR's Neal Conan. He was right; I would not let my wife interrupt while I watched. It was the championship round of the 28th Crossword Puzzle Tournament at the Marriott in Stamford, Connecticut. Wow! This whimsical documentary introduces you to the world of word nerds who are addicted to the NY Times crossword puzzle, people like Bill Clinton and Bob Dole, the Indigo Girls and pitcher Mike Mussina of the New York Yankees. But the best takes are those about ordinary people-- there are 50 million puzzleheads out there-- who compete every year in Stamford, and also the "crossword constructors" who create the puzzles with their dastardly clues (the Times uses about 110 puzzle constructors in a year). Will Shortz, the crossword puzzle editor for the NYT, looms large throughout the film; thirty years ago at Indiana University where you could create your own major he specialized in "enigmatology." If you want to compete at Stamford, sharpen your pencil; it takes only 3-4 minutes for the champion puzzlers to solve that bugger in your morning paper.

Product Description

A bellydance drum solo is actually a duet: Together, a dancer and a drummer create a unique piece of performance art. For the dancer, the drum solo is a uniquely exciting experience demanding a profound understanding of rhythmic patterns and a wide vocabulary of bellydance moves and accents, all necessary to enable her to interact at will with the music created by the drummer.

RHYTHM WORKSHOP: Raquy breaks apart eight popular bellydance rhythms: baladi, saiidi, maksoum, masmoudi, ciftetelli, malfouf, ayub, & semai. Acclaimed as a percussion performer, instructor and composer, Raquy teaches us how to recognize each rhythm. Then Jenna, a star dancer, instructor and choreographer, demonstrates effective dance combinations for each of the 8 rhythms. Accompanied by Raquy and Carmine, Jenna then also demonstrates the unique art of drum solo improvisation including the above rhythms.

CHOREOGRAPHY WORKSHOP: Jenna takes you step-by-step through THREE bellydance drum solo choreographies; beginner, intermediate, and advanced. Each instructional session takes place before the mirror, enabling you to follow Jenna as if you were right behind her in the studio. On screen, a beat counter accompanies choreographic demostrations. Choreography breakdown sections separate each dance into numbered combinations, and provide titles naming each move. The "Learn and Practice" section offers a step by-step breakdown of each combination and a presentation of the choreography "from the top" with practice repetitions inserted, so you can follow Jenna and learn the steps in real time.

The DVD also contains a warmup sequence recommended before learning or practicing, and Jenna's famous Shimmy Drills: the Shimmy Layering Drill, and her 3/4 Shimmy Drill. The drills are fun mini-exercise routines to help you learn and build on the art of the shimmy, one of the most colorful and vibrant bellydance moves.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars easy learning.......2007-09-13

Very well performed, easy to follow each move. all three routines fun and very graceful.would like to purchase the drum solo music to go with it.

4 out of 5 stars very good...but poor video quality and editing........2007-09-06

This is my first dvd on belly dancing, so its a bit hard to say just how good it really is...but i was pretty satisfied. Jenna does a good job in explaining certain moves, now its a matter of practice on my side to perfection the shimmy. I liked the warm up alot , it loosened up my hips and shoulders in preparation for other practices. I found the section that teaches drum rythms to be very insightful. I was pleasently surprised that i began to sweat in the section of shimmy drills.!!! Wow...its not easy. But i had a real problem with the quality of the video and in some parts the editing is poorly done. I dont know much about belly dancing but i feel this dvd probably doesnt cover enough...so ill have to buy several others and see if there are other moves or techniques to learn. I've realized though, with drum solos, its not easy to try and do a choreography that jenna teaches. because i tend to move to the drum in my own ways so...that is a bit challenging.

5 out of 5 stars Drum Solo Rhythmes.......2007-05-23

For explaining the different rhythmes: baladi, saïdi, maksoum, masmoudi, ciftetelli, malfouf, ayub and semaï, this DVD gets 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Great DVD!!.......2007-03-25

This was a great learning tool in understanding the different rhythms. Jenna's drum solos were awesome!

5 out of 5 stars Heartbeat of Bellydance.......2007-03-08

5 out of 5 stars BUY THIS MOVIE.......2007-09-06

This is not a goofball subject. Air guitar is one of the unspoken truths associated with American culture since the early stages of rock. Most of the people you see at one point in time indulged themselves in the apparitional past time. This movie comes at a time when wielding the symbolic guitar is now approaching reality. I was struck early on by the feeling of magical metal tempo surrounding me as I contorted and muttered the groans of approval on my stage I could take wherever I went. My fingers on my hand danced seemingly close to the speed of light with the stage light eclipsed by the musings of others.

As a child, I took air guitar, we called it shredding, quite seriously, even more so after a horrible accident in a closet with my brother. Inspired by some fresh Winger riffs our star studded dream took us into a whirlwind of uncontrollable fits until it all stopped after colliding our heads into each other. I was unconscious for hours until I awoke and my parents explained that my brother had passed away. To this day, I shred air guitar to his honor as he was probably the best air guitarist their ever was. I honestly have no idea what happened in that closet dewd, but every time I watch this, you will be by my side.

5 out of 5 stars So Awesome!.......2007-08-31

I saw this at the SXSW film festival in 2006 mainly because it was the only thing showing at the time where were at. Oh man! Am I glad I saw it! No expectations at all...and it was one of the coolest things I've seen in a theater!! So freaking funny! The whole audience was going nuts pretty much the whole time. These real live "characters" are so hilarioius and so charismatic...they really make the fillm go. Such a crazy and goofy topic, but it was an awesome experience. If you appreciate good comedy and rock music, it's a must see.

This movie was one of the best I saw in the last year - a great documentary of really funny, unusual people. I especially liked the overall tone of the movie in its generosity and lightheartedness. This is the kind of thing that makes me feel hopeful about our current world.

5 out of 5 stars Very easy to follow!.......2007-08-08

This DVD is very easy to follow and gives several good tips on the basics of salsa dancing. I've practiced with several beginers who were able to grasp the basics right away. The intstructor is very encouraging though a little cheesy. It's a great way to improve your confidence before going out dancing.

4 out of 5 stars Maybe its just me.......2007-07-20

I bought it because of all the great reviews. It is good but for a total beginner I feel there are some problms. On some parts I started "getting it" once I turned the volume down and jsut watched. It seemed that some parts contrdicted (instruction didn't match the movements) what the actor was saying (counting, putting feet "together" and the bouncing); plus, while some parts are at the right pace, the important basic parts they zoom right through asssuming you got it. The dude wears black so it would be better if he were in light clothes against the dark backdrop.

It could be that i am just completely uncoordinated but I think it's geared toward those who have some dance knowledge; those people will know the basics so it'll be easier.

4 out of 5 stars SALSA ANYONE?.......2007-06-08

This is the BEST at home tape I have seen. I bought it originally for my husband so he could practice in the comfort of our home so we could go out and dance. He didn't feel comfortable going to a class and we have a small child. I really love it and plan on expanding our knowledge of dancing. The only thing I was not to crazy about is the dark area where it is being recorded at. But we love it.

5 out of 5 stars Great intro to Salsa.......2007-05-20

I really liked the way this video started with the absolute basics and then works its way up into doing some actual moves. It's not intimidating, is easy to follow, and has some great tips on how to look good and look sexy on the dance floor. If you want a great intro to Salsa, this is it.

5 out of 5 stars great dance instruction dvd.......2007-05-15

It's easy to follow and they both give good tips both for the man and the women. Can watch over and over and practice right along with the instructors.

If Buffy the Vampire Slayer represents the lighter side of high school as a macabre experience, here's a movie that asks the burning question, "What happens when angst-ridden teenagers develop supernatural powers?" More to the point, how do four outcast teenaged witches handle their ability to cast wicked spells on the taunting classmates who've nicknamed them "The Bitches of Eastwick"? The answer, of course, is "don't get mad, get even." That's about all there is to this terminally silly movie, which makes up for its ludicrous plot by letting its young female cast have a field day as they indulge their dark fantasies. Fairuza Balk is enjoyable as the most wicked of the witches, and is therefore the focus of the film's most dazzling special effects. But it's Neve Campbell from television's Party of Five who made this film a modest box-office hit, just before she became her generation's fright-movie favorite in Scream and its popular sequel. --Jeff Shannon

2 out of 5 stars Come in for a Spell ..........2007-06-13

This movie was alright, it's one of those USA network type movies that you watch on a Sunday afternoon when there's nothing else on but football, and of course, it's for women and girls. Pre Buffy and Charmed, this rose a year or two before. It's an old story, updated with Generation X / goth rocker imagry for the 90s.

Earth, Air, Fire and Water, the four elements, come together at a Catholic school in southern California. Sarah has moved from the north to start over, makes some new friends at her new school, and all seems well. Soon the three new friends reveil that they are witches, looking for the fourth to complete their coven circle, and they believe Sarah is the match. Sure enough, the four come together and create just that.

This movie is about the abuse of power. Neve Campbell wishes that her scars would be removed when all medical treatments have failed, and, like magic, they vanish and she gets hot. Another wishes that the mean girl would get what's coming to her. And, sure enough, after a spell, the evil blonde popular girl (why are the mean girls always blonde in the movies and real life?) is knocked down a few pegs when her hair starts falling out. And the head witch, Fairuza Baulk, wants all the powers of the universe. And gets it. They become as vain and self centered as the ones they were looking to get even with, fall off their pillars, and eat some humble pie.

It's not an original story by any means, it's just dressed up with special effects to make it witchy and supernatural. Just some light entertainment, have fun with it.

4 out of 5 stars Overall it's good........2007-05-13

Came fast, and in good condition. I haven't seen it since i was young so i bought it. Good movies about witches or witchcraft are hard to come buy. It's set for a more young adult to teen audience.

4 out of 5 stars Witchy Good Movie.......2007-01-14

I think every young woman in Generation X has seen "The Craft." Sarah moves to Los Angeles from San Francisco and meets three friends who teach her about the world of witchcraft. In a story somewhat similar to "Mean Girls," her three new friends end up turning on her. Mean witches can be bitches. Sarah discovers that her mother was a powerful white witch and that she has the gift of witchcraft herself. While this is a lite horror movie, it has a good message of not messing with black magic.

5 out of 5 stars The Craft Rules.......2007-01-11

The craft is a new classic for me, it was cool when I watch in high school and now my little sister (too little to get interested at the time) is hardcore fan, so I bought it for her a b-day present, she loves it, it a great movie, full of fun and special effects (some of them not very good) and special features, you will definitely wont regret to add this to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars 5of5 for good reasons.......2006-11-13

I gave it 5 stars for several reasons. Real Wiccans that view this usually down it. But I have read interviews to why there are inaccuracies in it. If they actually performed the ritual correctly, it could have been devastating. So, with technical help from the Golden Dawn, it was "modified" for safety. Fairuza Balk is a Wiccan herself. I call her Ru for short.... She has captured hearts everywhere in this movie. It has lead many people to the teachings of Wicca, unfotunately in a fantasy way. I wsh they had posted a notice before or after the movie that teh Witchcraft used was modified from the real teachings to protect the actors and actresses from harming themselves or others.
I would love to see Ru do another Witchcraft movie in which she can be a part of the direction. This movie is an instant classic and will never fade away. I wish they would make a sequal.

Product Description

East Coast Tribal bellydance blends sensual, fluid movement with sharp percussive accents evoking the flair of urban modernity. It resonates with exotic echoes of the world's ancient dances and bears a touch of the dark cyber-age mystique.

The East Coast Tribal Bellydance instructional and muscle-conditioning program is designed by Sera, an acclaimed performer of Tribal fusion bellydance, and sought-after instructor with a superb systematic and effective teaching method. Sera's primary form of creative expression is through Tribal styles of belly dance. Her movements are rooted in Tribal Fusion Bellydance, drawing from ballet, modern, jazz, hip-hop, and ATS (American Tribal Style) to make the blend she calls East Coast Tribal.

Sera's Warmup and Drills programs combine fluid movements and percussive hipwork of bellydance in a way that promotes muscle strength, tone and elongation - the basis for a beautiful body line and effortless grace, both in dance and in everyday life. These sections will take you though series of upper and lower body isolations, help you ingrain in your muscle memory the precision of bellydance technique, and develop muscle control that will convert into a mesmerizing fluid dance as you are learning the East Coast Tribal combinations.

The step-by-step instructional section breaks down essential bellydance movements and assembles them into 6 combinations. The combinations can be practiced and performed individually or as a whole. They come together into a seamless choreographed sequence with a wonderful flow of energy and an amazing expressivity.

3 out of 5 stars Good bellydance workout.......2007-09-12

This bellydance video offers a good, fun, workout. It is not a good instructional video for traditional bellydance moves. It would be a good companion to a traditional bellydance dvd.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent teaching, and a versatile video........2007-08-01

I finally worked through this video after owning it for a while, and I was stunned at how excellent it is. There are a few flaws (which I'll get to later), but those aside, it's a superb video.

First things first. This is not a beginner's DVD. Sera neither gives the kind of explanations of basic movements a beginner would want, nor does she present all the basics of bellydance. No way. It is, however, a great DVD for intermediate dancers. Sera goes over some basic movements (especially in the warmup), but in such a way as to help you increase your flexibility and power.

The 20-minute warmup and the 10-minute drill section get you doing some basic stretches, focusing on your isolations, and quite importantly, working on powering moves from particular muscles. The dancers mirror your movements (so when she calls "left," they actually move to their right) which I prefer. Sera is extremely thorough about calling out which muscle to use for a move, and always managed to remind me as soon as I forgot. I *was* worried about the neck stretch, since she moves the head all the way back, and some moves also seemed quite hard on the knees, so I modified them. In the choreography Sera is careful to point out which sections are knee-unfriendly, and sometimes offers a modification, but this is not the case in the workout. She does, however, tell you when certain moves are difficult for beginners, so you don't get discouraged.

I would say that, considering how cheap the DVD is, the warmup is worth the price alone. I know I'm going to use this (with some extra stretching) as an introduction to other bellydance videos.

Next comes a demonstration of the combinations to be learned, and then very detailed instructions for each of six movement combinations. I had watched the video before, but only by doing it could I see what a brilliant teacher Sera is. She has that uncanny ability to know *just* when you're relaxing a certain muscle, or doing a movement lazily, or forgetting about your posture, and to give a perfectly-timed reminder.

On the other hand, the combos themselves are challenging and, to my eye, beautiful. It's not hard to get the basics of each, but to do them right, with the correct arm movements, good timing, and perfect form, is hard. This is a major strength of the DVD: you can grow into it a little. Both the warmup and the dance instruction are basically doable for an advanced beginner/intermediate, but they have enough layering and little details that you have a reason to go back and do the video again.

As you can probably tell by the length of this review, I am impressed! I do want to say though that it's not the right DVD for you if you just want to pop something in the player and shake your hips around. Some of the muscular movements can be quite strenuous. You need to pay attention to the instructions, you need to listen to your body to avoid injury, and you may even need to pause it and practice a movement slowly and carefully on your own. And you need to stretch thoroughly at the end. But this is what makes it so good.

5 out of 5 stars You won't notice the time passing. This is elegant and fun........2007-07-04

I am writing this because I hope some of you reading it will recognize yourself: I have either studied, taught or competed in about five different sports or disciplines. (Ballet, competitive swimming, Pilates, yoga, White Crane kung fu, and Cha Yon Ru.) My biggest problem with exercise is finding workouts that don't bore me, but that won't aggravate old injuries.

I had avoided bellydance, because it is one of those things my hippie mother did. (Sorry Mom.)

I did this for the first time today, and I thought maybe fifteen minutes had gone by--nope, I had done the whole tape. Wow. I can't remember the last time that happened. And, nothing hurts in a bad way. I think this is my new obsession. Wow.

4 out of 5 stars it was fun.......2007-07-03

I have a few bellydance DVDs at home. I have to admit that this is on of my favorites. Even though I think the warm-up is too long (20 minutes), I have to admit that it is effective. If you don't even have time to do the whole video, the warm-up would be enough for you. There was a 10-minute segment on hip work, which is also pretty good. I think it would have been better if they included more moves than just hip slides, hip locks, and shimmies. There is a demonstration of the routine which is about 5 minutes long (the routine is only about 2 1/2 minutes, but they repeat it automatically), which I love. Afterwards, the routine is broken up into 6 combinations and Sera teaches you how to do them. What I like the most is that the instructor is actually talking instead of using a voice-over.

2 out of 5 stars Too Gothic.......2007-06-08

This is not what I would consider an authentic belly dance DVD. It tends to be too Gothic and there is not enough instruction to even consider this DVD for a beginner.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Put up yer Dukes...!.......2007-05-17

Nice, direct approach to the genre of teaching video, Duke's vulnerability in from of the camera is a perfect foil for her strength of character at the poker table. Concise, witty and fun, the video is full of gems that I believe will help me relieve the donkeys of their hard-earned money..!

4 out of 5 stars Good tips, Good Value.......2007-05-10

"Advanced" can mean different things to different people. Let me start by telling you what it means here. It means you already know how to play the cards. This DVD will not tell you when to raise with pocket 7s or how to play when you flop a straight. This DVD is about what you need to know after you already know that. This is not about the "advanced" secrets of playing your hand. If you are looking for advice on how to play your two cards, this is not your DVD.

So what does it cover? The main claim to fame is the section on Tells. Annie covers techniques that the FBI uses to know when someone is lying for example. She emphasizes that you need to watch your opponents before you end up in a hand with them to get a baseline. For example, rapid blinking can be a sign of lying (bluffing), but if you haven't noticed the player before now, how do you know if he is blinking a lot? Some people just blink more than others. Also included are sections on playing against certain types of players (the maniac for one) as well as things like figuring pot odds and so on.

Yes the production values are minimal. Yes, Annie sits at the same table the entire DVD, but the advice is good and there is nothing to distract you from getting it.

If you already are confortable with playing your two cards then this DVD is a good way to help you move to the next level where what happens above your cards is just as important on what is on them.

2 out of 5 stars Informative but difficult to watch.......2007-04-25

I purchased both of Annie Duke's DVDs. The information is valuable but as a No Limit player, I found the discussion of both Limit and No Limit distracting.
My BIGGEST COMPLAINT is that the setting is identical to a funeral home, including the crimson velvet curtains framing an urn. Ms. Duke wears the same ugly shirt throughout both videos.
I would really enjoy these DVD's if they were produced in a visually appealing setting, and if Ms. Duke changed her peasant blouse. It is unfortunate that so much good information is wasted by poor production.

3 out of 5 stars good but too short.......2007-03-17

great advice on tells, but it is way too short. She spends a lot of time explaining why this dvd is only for advanced players but doesn'tgo through many topics that an advanced player thinks about. What she is good at are seeking "tells", and pretty much thats all she delves into.

5 out of 5 stars A Very Good DVD for Intermediate Players Looking to Improve.......2007-02-02

Let me first start by saying that I have been playing hold'em poker for 3 1/2 years, the last 1/2 year of which has been for a living. I would recommend this DVD to anyone who, like me, is a visual learner. I personally get a lot more out of watching a lesson than by reading about one. But, that's just me. Anyhow, Annie (who happens to be one of my favorite players), does a fine job of covering all the major topics that an intermediate player needs to learn in order to move up the limits or simply to improve their profits at their current table limits.

No, this DVD won't make you the next World Champion, but it will teach you some very solid higher-level poker fundamentals if you are in the intermediate stage of your poker career, and it will be a great refresher course for experienced players who want to quickly brush up their skill set.

I especially like the way that this DVD is arranged into cogent chapters which you can easily jump to through the main menu. If you want a quick lesson on how to play position, for example, you go right to that chapter on the DVD. If you want tips on reading people's tells, based on FBI interrogator research, you can quickly get a nice lesson on that...and so on. It is not a video that has its information strewn about randomly throughout. In short, this DVD is very well laid out, and that is one of the things I really enjoy about it. I still go back and review sections every now and then to reinforce certain skills.

In closing, this is a good DVD and Annie Duke does a good job. Though it's only shot with her sitting at the table in a studio, she is charismatic and fun to watch. Will you learn the deepest, darkest secrets of world-class Texas Hold'em -- of course not. Would KFC ever publish their secret blend of 11 herbs and spices for anyone to buy? Same logic here, but I bet you will gain from this DVD.

That's my small blind (2 cents). Thanks for reading my review.

5 out of 5 stars New Favorite.......2007-06-02

This was a perfect introduction into this type of music and dance. We loved it. It will remain a favorite.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!!!.......2007-05-25

I didn't want to leave the theater when I originally saw this film. Any musician, especially music teachers, will appreciate the multiculturalism that "Pulse" displays. (My students beg to watch this movie when I have a substitute.) "Pulse" is a great way to expose yourself and others to the vast variety of music that exists in our world. It is moving and absolutely breathtaking -- Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Teachers.......2007-05-20

Pulse is an excellent video for the classroom. Students from elementary through high school will enjoy watching this video.

4 out of 5 stars Finally!.......2007-03-21

I've waited a long time for this IMAX film to be put on DVD so I could share it with my music students. I'm so excited that it's finally available!

Everything is there, plus some cool extras.

However, my excitement is tempered by the following:

The only reason I give it four stars instead of five is that the film was simply compressed from IMAX down to a letterbox.

Everyone looks a bit squished - noticeably wider and shorter than they did in the film. This is unfortunate because in the extras, everyone is proportioned correctly, obviously filmed with regular film instead of IMAX film.

5 out of 5 stars This DVD has been a long time coming.......2007-02-03

Pulse: A Stomp Odyssey works along the premise that music--and more accurately, rhythm--is the global language. To that end, the Stomp team has done a fantastic job of collecting and filming cultural rhythms from around the globe. For those expecting something along the lines of Stomp's live performances such as the ones showcased in Stomp Out Loud, prepare to be disappointed. But for those looking for a creative and fantastic journey of discovery, Pulse delivers in spades.
