In his most effective thriller since Enemy of the State, Tony Scott makes time travel seem plausible. It helps that his New Orleans hero, ATF agent Doug Carlin (Denzel Washington in his third go-round with the director), spends more time in the present than the past. In order to catch a terrorist, FBI Agent Pryzwarra (Val Kilmer) invites Carlin to join forces. They have the technology to see the past. He has the expertise to interpret the data. Unfortunately, the bomb has already gone off and hundreds of ferry passengers have died. Then there's the body of a beautiful woman, Claire Kuchever (Paula Patton, Idlewild), that turns up in the vicinity of the blast. Evidence indicates she was killed beforehand. Since the FBI enables him to observe Claire prior to her murder, Carlin gets to know what she was like and finds himself falling in love. He becomes convinced that the only way to solve the case--and prove her innocence--is to travel to the past. But as Pryzwarra's colleague, Denny (Adam Goldberg), argues, "You cannot go back in time. It's physically impossible." Or so he says. Déjà Vu is constructed around a clever script and executed by a top-notch cast, notably Washington, Patton, and an eerie Jim Caviezel (miles away from Passion of the Christ). In shedding the excesses of recent years--the sadism of Man on Fire and weirdness of Tarantino favorite Domino--Scott re-affirms his rep as one of the action movie's finest practitioners. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Not bad for a time travel movie.......2007-09-10
The first point is the acting. It had too small of part for Kilmer, but all the acting is top notched. Denzel plays a guy who is good at his job and is morally upright, who uses his charm to speed up the bureaucratic process. Caviezel was intense and good. The plot was good. The trouble with the plot was that once Denzel goes back in time, he should not have been able to change the past. For example, the Twelve Monkeys did this well. However, since it was Denzel Washington, the past had to change. What happens to Denzel once he went back in time was pretty obvious to this viewer.
There was a previous reviewer who said the science made perfect sense and was straight-forward. Funny. The movie was about time travel and worm holes. Give me a break. People watch NOVA a few times and think they understand space and time. I have a physics degree, I did not understand their mumblings, and I thought it was silly. They explained the massive energy requirements by having the lights of the city dim when the time machine was in operation (stolen from Weird Science?).
The movie for a while reminded me of "Laura" in which a detective falls in love with a portrait of the supposedly dead victim. Who wouldn't fall in love with Gene Tierney or Paula Patton? I thought they should have kept working with that idea instead of the time travel, but the problem was that this victim was very dead indeed.
The movie had some very interesting ideas. The car chase scene was very good. How well they tied in the future and the past was very good. The problem was that once you figure out what is going to happen to Denzel and Paula, the movie lost its edge and excitement for me.
He killed her four days ago! You were at the funeral, what's wrong with you?.......2007-09-08
An ATF agent, Doug Carlin, is called in to investigate a ferry explosion.
During his investigation he stumbles upon the body of a murdered girl. He knows she is somehow connected to the bombing. With the help of some very high-tech, Einstein inspired, government equipment, he is able to watch the last four days of her life.
As he watches her last moments, he cannot stop himself from falling in love with her and becomes determined to recover her life. Carlin needs to travel back in time, save the girl and stop the terrorist, but has to be quick for the clock is ticking....
A Tony Scott/Denzel Washington collaboration is always worth watching as they usually deliver a movie with an intricate plot, thrilling action sequences, and characters that are driven by their emotions. These are rare qualities in action movies to-day. Déjà vu is no exception for it has all these qualities and more. The supporting cast is fantastic, a sublime Adam Goldberg makes a great super intelligent and witty side kick to Washington and Jim Caviezel is unnerving as the psychopath who believes his actions are for a greater good. Be warned; if you are a Val Kilmer fan, you will be a little bit disappointed as he seems to be a bystander in most events and not a participant. I have the impression that most of his scenes ended up on the cutting room floor.
Like all time travel stories it will leave you with questions e.g. if this event did not take place how come Carlin knew to go back and stop it happening. Unfortunately as with all time travel tales I don't think this can be avoided but don't get too hung up about it; just let it wash over you and enjoy the film. The ending is slightly weak and leans towards the saccharin but you can forgive Déjà Vu these few flaws. This is the thinking person's action movie and after you have watched it you will probably be compelled to watch it all over again.
Deja Vu DVD.......2007-08-30
Denzel Washington seems to know how to choose the right scripts. This movie is so intense--and convoluted--it really makes you think in order to keep up. Together with a great cast, he puts this one over and makes it believable. It meets our criteria of "clean entertainment" and is a great addition to our home collection. We got it from Amazon fast and in super condition--as usual.
Since when did voyeurism become a virtue?.......2007-08-28
The premise of this movie is an interesting one. Denzel Washington is an ATF agent who while investigating a ferry explosion is recruited by a group of government funded techno nerds who have a device which can see backwards in time.
Somehow their mission mostly involves observing the leading actress in the shower and also walking around her apt in her underwear. Denzel is suddenly smitten and decides he has to go back in time to save not 300 victims in a ferry explosion but one woman he has seen in her underwear. This is Hollywood at its most insipid and this would have been a pretty decent movie if it wasn't for this adolescent spin.
What If You Could Change The Past..........2007-08-24
So, what does it take for a movie to get my attention? It's an assortment of factors, some of them would be the following: a story that appears intriguing, a director attached that has a solid record of hits, a star or group of stars that I'm a fan of, or merely be a sequel to a movie that I enjoyed. Many times it only takes one of those items to get me interested in a movie, but sometimes it helps to have more than one factor working to a movie's advantage. This is the case of the action-packed thrill ride "Deja Vu" that stars Denzel Washington (one of my favorite actors), is directed by Tony Scott (director of "Man on Fire"), and is produced by uber-producer Jerry Bruckheimer (whose movies I thoroughly enjoy 9 times out of 10). With all of those factors together in one movie, this was definitely one film that I wanted to see from the moment I saw the first trailer.
"Deja Vu" focuses on federal agent Doug Carlin (Denzel Washington) being called in to recover evidence from a deadly ferry explosion that rocked New Orleans. While working the case, Doug is pulled aside to aide in a top-secret government experiment dealing with time-shifting surveillance, basically they can watch events of the past as if it were in the present. The team behind the experiment is hoping that this revolutionary technology will allow them to see the crime before it happened in hopes of catching the person(s) responsible for the heinous act. But can this technology assist in changing the past or merely watching it from the sidelines?
Here is a movie that caught me completely by surprise. I was fairly confident that I was going to be in for an enjoyable action-packed thrill ride, based solely on the facts that Jerry Bruckheimer was producing (a man known for delivering the best action movies in Hollywood) and Tony Scott was directing (whose use of quick cuts and groundbreaking camera work has created some of the most thrilling sequences put to film). Sure this movie delivered explosive action and intensity, but what I didn't expect was the use of so much science fiction with the concept of bending time and even some time travel. Surprisingly, the sci-fi aspect actually worked for the film, which couldn't have been easy to execute due to time-themed science fiction being rather difficult to pull off in a way that makes sense, and doesn't create plot holes within the story. But the writers of this movie managed to craft a story that was filled with plenty of action, intriguing drama, and some sci-fi thrown in to mix things up a little bit without allowing the story to become bloated and clunky. Another aspect of this movie that surprised me was Tony Scott's seemingly more reserved direction. After filming both "Man on Fire" and "Domino" with such frantic camera work, extremely fast cuts and stylistic color manipulation, it was somewhat relaxing to watch a much more straightforward approach to movie making from this talented director.
Denzel Washington was superb as always in his role as federal agent Doug Carlin. He handles the action and drama with great ease, and even the science fiction aspect seemed like second nature to him, which is a genre he's had very little experience with (his last foray into sci-fi was the lackluster film "Virtuosity"). The main supporting cast comprised of Val Kilmer and Jim Caviezel provided interesting, three-dimensional characters from a script that seemed to have them painted very thinly, based on their roles and screen time, but these two talented actors made the most of what they were given. It was nice to see Val Kilmer back on the big screen, he's a gifted actor that it seems like we don't see much from anymore (though that may have something to do with his apparent weight gain, a career ender for some in Hollywood). The remainder of the cast were all solid, but weremade up of fairly run-of-the-mill filler characters that were used mostly for exposition.
"Deja Vu" is a surprisingly original, entertaining thril-ride that grabs you from the opening sequence and never lets go. This is a movie that is a definite must-see, and one that is fun to watch time and again.
"Deja Vu" is rated PG-13 for violence, language, and brief nudity/sensuality.

Getting THE Science Fiction Right.......2007-09-13
*Déjà Vu* is the perfect blend of science fiction and action film for the average movie watcher as well as the science fiction fan. At its core, it is a thrilling, well paced action adventure story about an ATF agent, Doug Carlin, investigating a terrorist bombing on a ferry full of US Navy sailors in New Orleans. 540 people are killed in the massive explosion, but one young woman's body washes up and doesn't seem to fit with the other victims; though it looks like a victim of the explosion, the body was discovered 8 minutes before the bomb went off. Other pieces of evidence regarding this victim quickly lead Carlin to roughly piece together where she fits in the puzzle; unfortunately, none of it is enough to provide leads to the perpetrator.
When Carlin presents his information to the FBI agents in charge, they are quickly impressed by his keen ability to size up a crime scene and filter out the noise from the pertinent details. They invite him to join a new test project that uses the latest technology to analyze a crime scene. Though the FBI and scientists involved try to hide the true nature of the technology, it doesn't take agent Carlin long to realize that there is more to it than advanced surveillance camera processing. This is where the science fiction weaves itself into the crime action drama film. While testing a new high-powered telescope technology, a way to bend the fabric of space/time is discovered, allowing the ability to watch the past in "real time" exactly 4+ days before.
What makes this film work so well is that the action mostly takes place in the present, but the technology leads to some very good storytelling and the most interesting car chase ever conceived. I had read in some positive reviews that as good as it was it didn't fully make sense...well they are wrong - it complete sense - just pay attention to the details along the way and the story comes together nicely. Yes, there are a few inconsistencies - whose explanations probably were left on the cutting room floor to keep the film well paced - but they are small. If you have a basic understanding of the physics and space/time you can piece them together yourselves; if you are not, don't worry and ignore them because they don't take away from this very film.
DeJavu.......2007-09-01
The story line was interesting , different and exhilarating. Unique movie allowing one to see the possibilities of things to happen with computer technology, and get one to wonder if it is possible to change happenings with cutting edge technology of computers. The sound and picture quality is excellent with the Blu-ray format.
Deja Vu all over again.......2007-08-21
Déjà Vu (DVD)
Déjà Vu starring Denzel Washington is an outstanding movie. Of course I don't know if Denzel was ever in a bad movie. Anyhow, the movie has a slight Science Fiction aura, its basic premise is a machine that can look back in time for approximately 96 hours, no more, no less. A ferry is blown up and this machine is used to solve the crime. The movie is set in the city of New Orleans, BTW.

This Rocks !!!.......2007-08-16
I have to say was entertaining. The premise was silly and Denzel Washington has played this role before in alot of his movies. There is no escaping the fact that the movie looks and sound excellent on blu-ray. You would be stupid if didn't add this movie to you collection. It's one of the best Blu-ray title on the market. You won't be disappointed.
Great movie!!!.......2007-08-14
Great action movie that really keeps your attention until the end. Denzel Washington has an outstanding performance that again does not disappoint. Worth the money to have on blu-ray if you ask me.

So romantic and haunting is Déja Vu's premise, it cries out for a director with more magic than Henry Jaglom can muster. Just before a long-engaged woman (Victoria Foyt, Jaglom's collaborator and second wife) slips into a serviceable marriage with a nice, if rather dull, guy (Michael Brandon), a chance encounter with an older Frenchwoman--a ghost?--derails her. After confiding memories of a dead-ended World War II love affair, the mysterious lady disappears, leaving behind a ruby pin that signifies one should never settle for less than the love of one's life. Drawn into the woman's past, Foyt travels from Paris to the White Cliffs of Dover--the WWII song, promising happy endings, is reprised at every turn--where she discovers the (married) love of her life (Stephen Dillane). Should they ruthlessly follow the dictates of their hearts? Or reject serendipitous passion in favor of familiar, safe lives? The star-crossed couple's dilemma comes into dramatic focus during a house party, when the guests (especially the charismatic Vanessa Redgrave) share tales about defining emotional moments, seized or allowed to pass. Director Jaglom likes to let a movie "happen" during such get-togethers, with family or friends improvising on often intimate themes (e.g., Babyfever's shower, 1994; Eating's birthday celebration, 1990). Such cinéma vérité can pay off in the freshest kinds of insights about the human condition--or it can be like getting cornered at a cocktail party by a pack of garrulous solipsists. Look for some of both in Déja Vu. --Kathleen Murphy
Description
Dana (Victoria Foyt) and Sean (Stephen Dillane) are strangers, yet they have a strong sense of belonging together. They also have no interest in upending their lives and long-term romances, so they part instead of following their hearts. But love may not be so easily denied.

1998 DEJA VU asks all the puzzling questions in the Universe...haven't we met before?...don't I know you....What do we do???.......2007-04-28
Film director Henry Jaglom has been hailed by critics as "the definitive Hollywood filmmaker".Jaglom and his real-life actress/wife ,Victoria Foyt, once again team up to bring a startling and originally scripted and crafted screenplay to the screen.Anyone familiar with the Jaglom/Foyt team (LAST SUMMER IN THE HAMPTONS) will again recognize the earmarks of their work which always tend towards multiple characters intertwined in almost "reality-like" situations and conversations making the viewer one with the characters as an invisible third party to the entire scene-cinema verite at it's best.
This DEJA VU,filmed in 1998,and not to be confused with three other films bearing the same title,is romantic, magical, mysterious and down right philosophical bordering on the existential! The term DEJA VU simply means "the feeling that one has experienced something or someone before exactly as it is being presently experienced".When deja vu is experienced it can startle, baffle and even "creep you out",but the fact that it is a phenonenon that is worldwide is undeniable.
Jaglom and Foyt's tale of "deja vu" takes a far more indepth and more philosophical road than the other films on this phenomenon as it asks the question, "If two people experience the undeniable 'pulling together' that cause them both feel that they are indelibly linked somehow/someway, then do they act upon it in spite of life choices already made?" This deliberately paced,well-acted and very intense dialogue-heavy script is a real find for lovers of the "intimate" film. This is a film, not so much of action, but of words skillfully set and spoken.Victoria Foyt and Stephen Dillane play the "haven't we met before" woman and man,Dana and Sean. The acting is so natural and engaging that the viewer is simply carried along in a very natural drift. The supporting characters played by Vanessa Redgrave,Rachel Kempson (Redgrave's real-life mother),Anna Massey (brilliant!),Noel Harrison and others make for a real two hour treat!.
The music choices of Franz Schubert's SERENADE and the nostalgic WW2 love song WHITE CLIFFS OF DOVER are constantly interlaced throughout this film which was shot in Paris,London,Los Angeles and Jerusalem.
I absolutely refuse to give any plot away, because to do so would destroy the impact and the surprise that each subtle scene contains.(I hope this entices you!)This film will probably not interest people who want "action/entertainment".This is a character study of one of the highest degrees that may well interest patrons of "live" theatre. The film poses alot of questions and asks alot of the viewer to think about the choices that we make, have made or maybe should have made. As a person, myself ,who has experienced and acted upon an undeniable "deja vu" several years back, I can only say that for me it only confirmed the truth of what Jaglom and Foyt postulate...and I am happy..very happy for having made that decision. Perhaps you will too!?
What was Dillane thinking when he took this role?.......2007-04-20
This viewer came away from this movie with the idea that Victoria Foyt and her husband must have been very generous with the cash to purchase such great actors for such a silly little movie. A check of Victoria Foyt's "acting" credits at IMDb shows that she hasn't been in any "real" movies, only those that she puts on herself. Foyt can't act her way out of a wet paper bag, and repetition and loud lines don't compensate for a lack of talent when supposedly working extemporaneously. I love Dillane's work, and to give him credit, he did his best to stay professional in this odd story. His best scene, though, was the one with the doorway, when he could just act, and not have to (one imagines) suppress winces at how awful it must have been to work with Foyt.
I do like that Vanessa Redgrave and her mother Rachel Kempson together, but they didn't have anything to sink their teeth into. Anna Massey is wonderful wherever she is. But she was wasted here.
Destiny, love and fellings.......2007-03-08
About the destiny, the love and the feelings. This movie is a wonderfull production with very good actors.
the scenery was nice.......2006-12-13
This movie is 99% dialogue, and most of that dialogue is improvised. Luckily, the actors are good at it, but the improvisation shows. The other one percent is travelogue, and the scenes of Jerusalem, Paris and Dover add to the movie.
A number of movies have tackled the love-of-one's-life phenomenon, but the others used some kind of story to try to get the feeling across. This movie merely talks about it.
The lead actress was actively off-putting. I didn't find her whiney, just not particularly likeable, and certainly not attractive. In any love story, the audience (or at least half of it) has to fall in love with the female lead. The other half has to go for the male lead. It was impossible to like, much less love, this female lead.
Bottom line: worth seeing once for the scenery, if you can get it for a VERY low price.
WHAT ABOUT THE SPECIAL COMMENTARY?.......2006-01-20
For many reasons, I liked "Deja Vu" and many of those appear in other reviews. But no one here seems to have mentioned and reviewed the special commentary by Henry Jaglom (Director)and Victoria Foyt (star actress) in the DVD. That is worth seeing because it is like having a second, complete film in itself.
Clearly, Jaglom and Foyt are very much in love, and to some extent "Deja Vu" is about them. At one point, Jaglom tells how he first met Foyt -- on the telephone -- and although each had other commitments and responsibilties, each of them realized the other to be the love of their lives. But most of the commentary was a lovingly executed version of artistic arguing about how the film was made and the concepts in it. I've been a serious film buff for years, yet learned a lot about acting and filmmaking from the commentary.
In the middle Henry asks Victoria does she think someone is watching the commentary before having seen the movie. Then he scolds the audience for this and insists they STOP immediately and see the the movie first.
Both the movie and commentary are fantastic, great entertainment (and even -- God forbid -- educational). The DVD goes beyond just the film "Deja Vu" and is worth buying just for the commentary.

Good movie.......2007-05-16
The end of the movie is something tricky, I would say forced; apart from this, a good movie.
Romantic Thriller............2005-04-04
This movie is one of the best I've seen in a while. For movie lovers of this genre, this one for us!
It's about an exploration of the mysteries of the past, the passion, jealousies, love and murder.
This is not your typical hollywood drama with a twist. Being directed by BAFTA award-winning cinematographer Anthony Richmond, you'll know you're up with something very British and fans of this genre won't be disappointed at all.
Beautifully directed, gorgeous scenery, costumes, haunting music and wonderful performances by the leads are among the big factors to consider when you buy this small gem on dvd.
Actors Nigel Terry (Excalibur) and Jaclyn Smith (The Bourne Identity) are excellent in this romantic/thriller based from the bestselling novel ALWAYS by Trevor Meldal-Johnsen.
Jaclyn Smith is, I must say, astoundingly beautiful in a dual role. I'll take her anytime as a "blonde" and the ending is one of the most satisfying Ive seen in so many years. It will haunt you down....waiting for more.
A must see in your dvd collection!
A Pleasant Surprise!!!.......2004-06-16
I rented this film based on its plot description, with moderate expectations, and I was pleasantly surprised by how enjoyable it was!
Nigel Terry is superb in his portrayal of a writer-going-mad and it is always wonderful to see Charlie's Angel Jaclyn Smith on the screen. Both actors play dual roles-- Smith is "Maggie", an actress in the present (the mid-1980's) and "Brooke", an acclaimed ballerina in the flashback sequences (the mid-1930's); Terry is "Greg", a writer in the present, and "Michael" a wealthy choreographer who works and falls in love with "Brooke". The two stories are joined by Greg's fascination with Maggie's uncanny resemblance to Brooke and the mysterious death of Michael and Brooke.
As soon as Greg begins researching the facts around the events that took place 50 years earlier, with the help of Shelly Winters as "Olga", a hypnotist and psychic, he soon discovers that he is Michael reincarnated, and that Maggie is... reincarnated herself! Does she possess the spirit of Brooke? Or someone entirely different? (You'll have to watch it to see!)
All of the actors give a fine performance, and the set and costume designers do a fantastic distinguishing between the two time periods of the film. All of which takes place in beautiful England. DEJA VU is a multi-genre film-- part love story and part mystery/suspense-- and it is executed in an almost Hitchcockian manner by giving the audience the right amount of information to intrigue them, without ever completely explaing every detail. If you're a viewer who doesn't like to make your own conclusions, then this may not be a film for you; but for those of you who appreciate this style of storytelling, then watch this today!

Fennessy
