A convenient retelling of historical facts.......2007-07-07

I can't say I support Bush on all his policies by any means... BUT... if you are going to criticize people at least be sure you do it based on actual facts and not just emotional or media-generated "bandwagon" frenzy.

The problem with this documentary is kind of like doing a research study but only revealing the test results that support your view and tossing away the other results that cast doubts on your research.

In this documentary, the producers try to keep hammering the message home that "Bush lied about the threat of Iraq. There were no Weapons of Mass Destruction, etc...."

The problem with this often use criticism, is it assumes the American public is either stupid or has no memory.

A quick review of video and news archives show Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, Al Gore and other leading Democrats giving speeches as far back as 1999 criticizing Bush Senior for not being more forceful on dealing with Iraq and how the administration must be faulted for not dealing with the "growing threat of Saddam Hussein and his nuclear weapons program".

In other words, it is clearly documented that virtually every politician on both sides was warning that the USA had to forcefully deal with Iraq long before Sept 2001.

Now in hindsight, when an American President does in fact take that action and it goes screwy because of too much political correctness and a lack of devotion to hit HARD, FAST and ALL-ENCOMPASSING in a warlike manner ............. all these same politicians are hoping a short-minded American public will forget their call to arms 8-9 years ago and allow them to distance themselves from the responsibility today.

Even sites like YOUTUBE for example, have some of the old news clips of Gore and Clinton banging their fists saying we need to stop Saddam growing threat of nuclear weapons and WMDs.
What hypocricy.

Now I am not defending Bush.... After his insane AMNESTY TO ILLEGALS ide this past month, he can fend for himself..............

In this DVD documentary, many current, former and retired military and intelligence officers some of whom were weapons inspectors and members of counter terrorism units contest President George W Bush's reasons for going to war against Iraq. Some of the other speakers include former ambassadors, scientists, Journalistic editor, a former white house counsel, and former assistant secretaries of defense and a congressman. Some who consider the title and content of this documentary might dismiss it, as the Bush administration has, as democrat partisan politics. But, actually some of the speakers are know republicans.

Their speaking out in this video expresses serious interest and concern for the United States and its international relations and international policies that come out of patriotism and many years spent in careers in service to the United States; not partisan politics.

Some of these speakers have suffered the unjust public humility of having their political alignment and even their patriotism questioned in the public media when they first spoke out in opposition to the Bush administration's claims about the existence and production of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and about links between Saddam Hussein's regime and al Qaeda terrorists, which were later proven to be groundless.

In this documentary we see former intelligence officers speaking out against the misuse of intelligence and the intelligence agencies of the United States by the Bush administration to produce faulty information in processes known as data mining to justify preemptive war against another nation in violation of laws legislated to safe guard against this type of abuse of power.

A former CIA analyst tells us of how he was brought into a meeting of intelligence agencies before the Bush administration in which the intelligence director of the Department of Energy ordered his subordinates to remain silent so as to offer no opinion or statements to contradict the President's case to go to war against Iraq. Members of the Bush administration were making statements designed to lead intelligence officers to align them in support of the administration's agenda to go to war against Iraq behind false reasons.

Counter terrorism team members tell us here about how there is no relation between Iraq and al Qaeda terrorism.

Many CIA officers were in opposition to Iraqi exile Achmad Chalabi as an intelligence information source because he had no credibility among the intelligence community. Achmad Chalabi was telling the Bush administration what it wanted to hear. The Bush administration wanted to believe that what it wanted to hear from Chalabi was true.

In a form of circular reasoning, the pentagon was supplying information to Achmad Chalabi's Iraqi National Congress to present as intelligence to support the case to go to war.

The Bush case for war in his state of the union address was full of bad information to deceive congress. Former White House attorney for Richard Nixon, John Dean reminds us that it's a felony to give false information to congress. This should lead to the conclusion that the Bush administration is impeachable for presenting false information as its reasons to go to war against Iraq to congress.

Information and evidence used to justify and rationalize the war on Iraq is examined along with a forged document which was supposed to show that Iraq attempted to buy yellow cake to make nuclear weapons. Everyone now recognizes that the document was a forgery. Condoleeza Rice is shown saying that no one in the Bush administration knew that the document is a forgery. Joseph Wilson of the United States Foreign Service is shown saying that he was in a position to know that the Bush administration did know that the document was a forgery prior to its use as evidence that Iraq attempted to buy nuclear materials from Niger. Joseph Wilson was sent to Niger to investigate whether or not Iraq had bought nuclear materials which could be used to manufacture nuclear weapons. His findings led him to conclude that Iraq had not bought nuclear materials from Niger. Joseph Wilson had publicly criticized the Bush administration's mobilization for war on Iraq based on discredited information. As a result the administration leaked information that Joseph Wilson's wife was a CIA officer as a reprisal for publicly criticizing the Bush administration Iraq war agenda. Careers of exposed CIA officers are ended by public exposure. Such exposure also has the real potential to jeopardize the officer's safety as well as the safety of their previous contacts. Such exposure also jeopardizes any projects or missions to which they have been assigned. Since this video has been released White House aid to Dick Cheney has been identified, tried and found guilty in a court of law for leaking Valerie Plame's identity as a CIA officer. Exposing the identity of CIA officers is illegal.

The documentary shows video coverage of then Secretary of State Colin Powell's presentation to the United Nations on February 5, 2003 to justify the Bush administration's mobilization for war against Iraq.

Former CIA officers pick apart the evidence and information being presented by Colin Powell and expose false evidence, discredited information and fallacious reasoning of the Bush administration behind Colin Powell's presentation to the United Nations.

The first time I watched this video, I rented it from the video store. I liked it. so, I bought it online. The DVD I bought online does not have all the information that was on the DVD that I had rented. It's missing a lot of the extra interviews that were in the "special features" option of the menu. But, it's a great video documentary that exposes many of the lies that the Bush administration has been hiding behind.

David Kay is one of the weapons inspectors who searched for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. He is one of those who came out and publicly said that there were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq in contradiction to what the Bush administration had been telling the public.

One point of reason that is also very compelling evidence that there were no weapons of mass destruction is that not one person in the United States military nor of the coalition forces who has been involved either in the invasion of Iraq or its occupation has been killed by weapons of mass destruction since the start of the invasion. It is unthinkable that they would not have used them by now if they had them.

Chas Freeman sums up the Bush administration's score in Iraq:

1. Weapons of mass destruction in Iraq as justification for invasion exposed as a lie. None have been found.

2. Links between Saddam's regime and al Qaeda in Iraq as justification for invasion of Iraq exposed as false. There is no information on the existence of any links between al Qaeda and any Iraqis prior to the United States invasion of Iraq. The continued political vacuum in Iraq that resulted from the United States military occupation of Iraq has created conditions in Iraq that have drawn al Qaeda members and al Qaeda member wannabees from everywhere into Iraq to turn it into a major recruitment and training center for al Qaeda. Where as there had been no members of al Qaeda in Iraq prior to the invasion, they are there now, drawn by the presence of our military and the absence of Saddam's ruthless security.

3. Regime change as an agenda item in Iraq by the Bush administration has become simply regime removal, resulting in a political vacuum. The current democracy set up by Paul Bremer probably will not survive whenever the United States leaves from Iraq.

4. Attempts to democratize Iraq has resulted in polarized desecularization of Iraq between extremist islamic factions of Shiite and Sunni muslims. Neither are likely ever to build a state friendly to the United States.

5. The Bush administration is attempting to install freedom in Iraq under United States military occupation and democracy in Iraq administered by the United States military. It is pointed out that this came after campaigns of bombing which was followed by invasion. The invasion of Iraq followed almost ten years of sanctions which were imposed upon Iraq and its people. It's not likely that they will learn to like us anytime soon after living through an experience and a history such as this.

And now, for the real story behind it all.......2007-05-07

To begin with, a nice approach by the producer was to introduce a long list of expert witnesses with decades of combined experience in intelligence, foreign service, and other fields that make up a bulk of testimony in the program. This really sets the tone for credibility when uncovering all the facts and shows that there is still integrity left in the world. As stated in the program at one point, part of being a patriot is not being afraid to tell the truth despite the consequences of doing so.

There is little speculation anymore about September 11, 2001 being the catalyst for war on Iraq and the war on terror. For getting us into Iraq, we have to lay the burden of proof (or guilt) on our government and their dubious methods of sending dire messages of danger that were never really there. It started out with WMD (Weapons of Mass Destruction) and gravitated toward terrorism at a later time. It is quite interesting to watch the video footage showing the government contradicting themselves before and after 9-11 using the evidence they fabricated, manipulated, and doctored to transfix a populace and justify an invasion. Using a National Intelligence Estimate employing questionable tactics such as `selective intelligence' and `data mining', these and other methods were used to help convince the bureaucracy that our presence in Iraq was absolutely necessary. Broken down into simple terms, there just wasn't any concrete evidence of chemical, nuclear, or biological weapons, the systems to deliver these weapons, and no facilities or materials to even construct these devices. There is basically no evidence anywhere that showed any serious attempts to question or investigate the spurious allegations of our government, defectors, or intelligence data during this time period.

Moving further along, it was the position of our government that terrorism played another vital role for reasons to occupy Iraq. First, it was for the part they played in the World Trade Center attacks (Iraq has subsequently been shown not to have been involved) and their link to Osama Bin Laden and his Al-Qaeda terrorist network (again, Iraq was not identified as having had any dealings at that time with him or them). Once again, it is demonstrated that our government is comfortable with being deceptive with the public and the 'official' facts and data proving these allegations are non-existent for all intents and purposes.

`Uncovered: The War on Iraq' is actually an updated version of an earlier documentary remade with about 30 minutes of new footage. I've only seen this latest version myself but it is more than enough to leave a lasting impact on me. I feel this program was well produced and presented and the messages contained within are very important and necessary. In addition to a few special features, there is an added segment of 35 minutes called Soldier's Pay. This is an enlightening series of interviews with several individuals regarding their antiwar issues. For those interested in this DVD, another excellent choice exploring similar issues is `On Native Soil'. I highly recommend both of these documentaries to everyone.

"The Bush administration made up its mind to go to war on September 11, 2001. From that time on, you were dealing with rationalization and justification for the war. You weren't dealing with real causes for the war or real reasons for the war. There was never a clear and present danger. There was never an imminent threat...So by the late 1990s, let alone 2003, it was clear that Iraq did not have a nuclear weapons program, but over and over again, President Bush, Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld, particularly Vice-President Cheney, but also [then] National Security Advisor [Condoleezza] Rice, drummed up the idea of a reconstituted nuclear capability."

The above was said by Mel Goodman, a former 20 year Senior CIA Analyst. This and many more comments are found in this riveting and fact-filled documentary that examines the actual arguments, speeches, and "spin" given by president Bush and his senior advisors before, during, and after the Iraq invasion.

There are no scene selections for this program but it is divided into segments. These are as follows:

(1) The Experts. (There are 25 that provide analysis throughout the program.)
(2) President Bush State of Union Address January 28, 2003 (and analysis)
(3) Secretary of State Powell's address to the United Nations (and analysis)
(4) War (declared on Iraq) March 19, 2003

(6) 16 words (in the State of the Union Address that were misleading)

As mentioned, there are experts that provide analysis throughout. All of them have twenty plus years of experience. Some of these experts include a former ambassador, weapons inspectors, a former director of the CIA, a former assistant director of defense, an anti-terrorism expert, former CIA analysts, and a former CIA operative.

Archival news footage and images abound in this film. There are also news headlines. The actual narration is this film is minimal. The archival footage comes from the following sources: (1) CSPAN (2) CNN (3) ABC (4) NBC and (5) CBS.

Finally, the DVD (the one released in 2004) is perfect in picture and sound quality. The extras (35 minutes in total) include extended interviews, behind the scenes interviews, and trailers.

In conclusion, this is a revealing, fact-filled documentary. A must-see for not only those who do not support the Iraq war but especially for those who do support it!!

Katharine Hepburn fans--and let's face it, who isn't one?--will be delighted by The Katharine Hepburn 100th Anniversary Collection. It showcases juicy, sometimes overlooked roles played by the winsome Hepburn both early and later in her career. The set includes 1933's Morning Glory, for which Hepburn won her first Best Actress Oscar, playing a determined young actress who just knows she's going to make a splash on the stage, and not fade like, well, a morning glory. The early screwball-era tempo is infectious, and young Kate, though insecure and--Lord help us all--skinny, beats the odds as she forges ahead in her career. Her rapid-fire delivery rivals that in another underrated Hepburn classic, Desk Set. Up next is Undercurrent, a gripping film noir that's slow in starting, but gets under the viewer's skin. Hepburn plays against type as an Ashley Judd-style gal-in-peril (or is she?), with a menacing husband (Robert Taylor) and a brother-in-law (Robert Mitchum) whom she may not be able to trust.

Sylvia Scarlett is a George Cukor-directed gem costarring Cary Grant, though Hepburn and Grant are most decidedly not in wacky Bringing Up Baby mode. The film wasn't well received when it was released in 1935, but it's a revelation now, for its daring homosexual subtexts--quite apparent to the modern viewer--and for Grant's against-type dark persona. Without Love, from 1945, is one of the first films to team Hepburn with Spencer Tracy, and yes, their onscreen chemistry is palpable. The conceit is one they would go on to use successfully time and again--plucky single woman resigned to living solo; rumpled, affable, slightly clueless bachelor who only needs to be shown just how much in love with our heroine he is. The supporting cast includes a terrifically cast Lucille Ball and Gloria Grahame.

Dragon Seed (1944) is an honorable misfire, an earnest period drama about the Japanese invasion of China. Through 21st-century eyes, Hepburn's impersonation of an Asian woman isn't great casting, and yet, Hepburn's honest, clear-eyed portrayal saves it from caricature. The Corn Is Green, a TV film from 1979, is an excellent counterbalance to all the brash, dewy-eyed roles in the rest of the set. Hepburn reteams with director Cukor for what is both a showcase for the diva's mighty talent, and yet also a completely even-handed ensemble piece, about a teacher's dedication in a small Welsh village.

Extras are plentiful on this already-packed disc, and include public-service and other shorts compiled by Warner Bros. that provide a window into mid-20th-century life. The short "Traffic with the Devil" (from the MGM Theatre of Life series) showcases the musings of a traffic cop, the real life Sgt. Chuck Reineke, who helps clueless, hapless drivers over what appear to be the wide-open spaces of L.A. highways. As a window to the truly more innocent times in Hollywood, the shorts are priceless. --A.T. Hurley

Nice collection.......2007-09-08

This is a nice collection of over-looked movies but available much cheaper from BJs, Sams, places like that.

What lousy film choices.......2007-08-29

Katharine Hepburn is a great actress, and she has made scores of first rate films. This collection is ludicrous as a first collection for her. "Morning Glory" is indeed good, and was her first Oscar. "Sylvia Scarlett" is weird and doesn't quite work, but it's definitely of interest - she passes as a man, which is intriguing; Cary Grant is charming and shows his music hall background. But it's also famous as the film Hepburn and director George Cukor APOLOGIZED for after it was made (to the producer). "Undercurrent" is faintly interesting, as Katharine worries if husband Robert Mitchum is dangeorus; but she's hardly at her best as a worried wife. "Without Love" is probably the dullest Tracy-Hepburn film, and Lucille Ball probably gives the best (supporting) performance in it. "Dragon Seed" is a famously bad film which even at the time was ridiculed for all these Caucasions pattering around playing Asians. (Once you get over the disconcerting casting, I admit Hepburn has good moments in it, as does Walter Huston.) I've never seen the tv version of "Corn is Green," maybe it's okay, I don't love that story, and don't love the Bette Davis version either.

But here are brilliant Hepburn films (and performances) that could or should be in a collection: Little Women, Alice Adams (fabulous performance, excellent film), Stage Door (great movie, and has the "callalilies" lines), Holiday, Bringing Up Baby (classic screwball comedy, one of the best), The Philadelphia Story, The African Queen (fabulous film, needs to be on a US dvd soon), all these OTHER Tracy-Hepburn ones: Woman of the Year, Adam's Rib, Pat and Mike, State of the Union, even Desk Set (charming), Keeper of the Flame (unusual story), Guess Who's Coming to Dinner. Summertime is great; Rainmaker is moving and good. She's great in Suddenly Last Summer, excellent in A Delicate Balance. Her performance in Long Day's Journey into Night is truly great, and psychologically complex. Of her tv movies, Love Amid in the Ruins is very good, and it has Laurence Olivier too. Oh, and Lion in Winter. Gosh, with this many great movies, how did they come up with this list??? (Maybe rights is a big part of the answer, but even so.) So better to buy your Hepburn films separately for now. Hope a more valuable, less obscure Hepburn collection comes out someday.

Excellent selection of Hepburn's performances.......2007-08-08

The movies in this collection are of different periods. They show Katharine Hepburn in a variety of parts: as a young girl (even a young boy!), a young woman, a mature adult, an old person - and even a Chinese peasant! They come from a variety of genres and highlight the versatility of this great actress. Technically the DVDs give no cause for reporach, the quality of the content of the movies varies - but Morning Glory, Sylvia Scarlett and The Corn Is Green are first rate and very watchable.

What a Pleasure!.......2007-07-03

What a pleasure to watch Kate! After buying this collection, I recently spent a day off from work with Katherine Hepburn (one from the 30's- "Slyvia Scarlett," one from the 40's- "Undercurrent" and one from the 50's- "The Rainmaker,"--not in this set.) She was fascinating in each of those decades.

Something must be said about "Dragonseed." I loved this film when I saw it as a teenager on TV years ago and have been waiting for it to come available on DVD. Much will be said about non-Chinese actors playing Chinese with the funny-looking make-up, etc. Points well made. But also points to be forgiven. If the viewer can get over these things (with this one and with "The Good Earth") and get into the characters and stories, this is wonderful story-telling and these are worthwhile stories to be told, both as the Pear S. Buck novels and as the MGM films, Caucasian actors notwithstanding.

I would collect "The Good Earth," "Dragonseed," and "The Inn of the Sixth Happiness," to get a sense of pre-WW2 China and the Japanese invasion.

An odd mix of films, with some great moments.......2007-06-18

2007 is the centenary of quite a few who touched the movies one way or another:
the poet W.H. Auden, novelists Robert A. Heinlein and Daphne Du Maurier, singers Gene Autry, Kate Smith, and Connee Boswell, bandleader Cab Calloway, film score composer Miklós Rózsa, director Fred Zinnemann, and the actors Dan Duryea, Cesar Romero, Buster Crabbe, Laurence Olivier, John Wayne, Barbara Stanwyck, Fay Wray, Burgess Meredith - and one Katharine Houghton Hepburn of Connecticut.

We have already seen tributes to Wayne, and no doubt Olivier and Stanwyck will also be acknowledged. In honor of Miss Hepburn, Warner has issued a rather odd and quite endearing six-disc boxed set of films not previously available on DVD. They range widely in both chronology and quality, and few would put these particular films at the very top of the Hepburn canon, even the one that won her her first Oscar. But as I watched this motley group of films - two from RKO in the 1930s, three from MGM in the 1940s, and one TV film from the late 1970s, I was reminded what a treasure she was and is. Even in the midst of misguided melodramas and not-quite-good-enough romantic comedies, she gives unique, memorable performances. In two cases, her acting may in fact be memorably off-key rather than memorably wonderful, but she makes all these worth seeing.

Morning Glory (1933) won Hepburn an Academy Award. She's excellent as a stage-struck young woman who is trying to make it as a Broadway actress. Her eccentric, fascinating performance can even be seen as a stylized self-portrait. The film itself, directed by Lowell Sherman, is dated in fascinating ways: the stilted storytelling, the 1920s/1930s view of Broadway as the ultimate place to become a dramatic star, the sexual mores. Although it's presented rather obliquely, the parts of the plot involving Hepburn ending up in bed with big producer Adolphe Menjou, falling instantly in love with him and being just as summarily dumped, may leave your jaw dropping both at the "adult" subject matter and the attitudes of another era. Of course, Hepburn eventually understudies for a star-making part, and gets her chance to shine. The bittersweet last scene is both wonderful and a bit ridiculous; this isn't just from an earlier time - it seems to be from another planet.

Without Love (1945) is often described as the worst of the pictures Hepburn made with Spencer Tracy. It's no classic, but if you set your expectations accordingly, it's very entertaining. Defense industry scientist Tracy and well-to-do young widow Hepburn decide to enter into a marriage "without love," based on mutual respect rather than, well, sex. This being Hollywood, you can guess how long that lasts (about ten minutes less than the running time). Lucille Ball and Keenan Wynn have amusing supporting roles - it's fun to see Ball playing a sexy sophisticate, leagues away from Lucy Ricardo. The competent but uninspired direction is by Harold S. Bucquet. His name was up until now unknown to me, but he co-directed another film in this very DVD set (see below), after doing mostly Dr. Kildare series movies before that. And although this is based on a play by Philip Barry, in which Hepburn starred on Broadway in 1942, it is a much less satisfying piece than Holiday or The Philadelphia Story, two earlier Barry-Hepburn collaborations. But she's very charming and perfectly cast.

Dragon Seed (1944) is the oddest of these six movies. It features a largely Caucasian cast playing poor Chinese farmers during the Japanese invasion of the 1930s. It's just about impossible for a 21st-century audience not to respond with appalled laughter at what seems now like a stunt. But the script, based on a Pearl S. Buck novel, is nothing if not sincere, and it has its effective moments. Still, seeing the inconsistent and almost entirely unconvincing ways the Hollywood makeup artists try to make Hepburn, Walter Huston, Agnes Moorehead and others look like Asians - well, this is entertainment in itself, after a fashion. But only for half an hour or so, and the film runs a stultifying 148 minutes. It was lavishly produced by MGM. The co-directors were Bucquet (of Without Love) and Jack Conway. Hepburn manages to project some real feeling through the silly makeup and the platitudinous dialogue.

Hepburn gives the nearest thing to a poor performance (in this set, I mean) in Vincente Minnelli's noirish melodrama Undercurrent (1946). Married to yet another war-era defense scientist (Robert Taylor), this one with a mysterious past, she's supposed to be meek and scared, and as we all know, that just ain't Hepburn. But the glossy production, along with Minnelli's gift for décor and movement, keep this one interesting, even, or especially, when it's ridiculous. Robert Mitchum plays a supporting role that many have called inappropriate for him, but I think he's just fine, as is Edmund Gwenn as Hepburn's father (he turns up again in this set, too).

Although it's flawed, George Cukor's Sylvia Scarlett (1936) is probably the best movie in the set. It features a fierce, sexy, and delightful performance by Cary Grant as a Cockney con man - a role quite different from most of his starring parts. Hepburn is on the run from the French police with her gambler father (Gwenn again), and to put them off the trail she cuts her hair and dresses as a boy - Sylvia becomes Sylvester. This leads to some startling and very entertaining scenes with a bit of bisexual innuendo: a woman kisses and tries to seduce "Sylvester," and both Grant and Brian Aherne find themselves strangely attracted to this young man. At one point, Grant and Sylvester are set to bunk together in close quarters. "It's a nippy night out," says Grant, "and you'll make a nice little hot water bottle." Sylvester flees in fright, even though Sylvia of course has a crush on Grant. The Grant and Aherne characters are both visibly relieved when Sylvester transforms back into Sylvia, but the audience may feel a letdown: Sylvester is a captivating, unusual presence, while Sylvia tends to mewl and whine too much. The later twists and turns in the comic-melodramatic plot are far from convincing, but it's all stylish and fun nonetheless.

I considered cheating a bit on this review and skipping the 1979 The Corn Is Green, also directed by Cukor. But although it is formulaic, it hooked me right away and I enjoyed it right through to the happy-teary climax. The story is a familiar one, a la Pygmalion and To Sir With Love, an 1890s period piece about a teacher, done up in the Hallmark Hall of Fame manner, and Hepburn is probably 25 years older than the part as written. (Bette Davis, born a year later than Hepburn, played this same role in a 1945 film when she was about 36; Hepburn was about 71! Still, Ethel Barrymore was over 60 when she played the part on Broadway in 1940.) There is beautiful Welsh scenery and a fine cast, and Cukor guides it home like the old pro he was by 1979.

Produced under the auspices of Turner Classic Movies, the discs all offer splendid picture and sound quality, and all include short subjects from their era, such as a Tex Avery "Wolf" cartoon and a fabulous Technicolor travelogue of Los Angeles in the forties. Maybe you only want to see the pedigreed Katharine Hepburn classics like Little Women and Adam's Rib and Summertime; if so, only Morning Glory and Sylvia Scarlett come close to that grade here. But the other, less familiar movies offer aspects of Hepburn you may not see elsewhere, and their Hollywood craftsmanship, as wrapped by Warner and Turner Classics in nice shiny packages, provides several hours of great entertainment.

What really annoys me about this video is that she gives detailed instruction on all the intricacies of the position but often never tells you what the position is. So you're left thinking - "what the heck is this?". This leads to a lot of confusion. As a beginner instruction what would be wrong with saying "this is xxxx pose" and then teaching it. Instead you are taken through all parts of the poses without knowing what is connected to what.
Also, the second DVD is really frustrating too. At first I thought it all would make more sense when she runs through it all on the second CD. (it shows her going through the poses to music & you can hear her breath.)
But again no direction as to names of poses - so you are trying to follow along, but how are you supposed to see the poses while you are in the positions?! If I'm doing downward facing dog how am I supposed to see the TV to know what she is doing next since there is no vocal direction! All I do is wind up hurting my neck. You hear her breath but thatncan't guide you since she doesn't always hold the pose for 1 breath.
This DVD is extremely frustrating. I wasted tons of time trying to understand it. It should have been called "Pretty Girl Makes You Wish You Knew Yoga"

I was looking for something to fill in the time after the birth of my daughter before I returned to the gym. My yoga instructor suggested Seane Corn, but this is not the DVD for me.

From my pov, this a very beginner DVD, an excellent beginner DVD, but as an advanced student I was frustrated. There is a lot of explanation and her theory (her attention to detail is excellent), and a verrrrry sloooow flow. Too slow for me and while I suppose I could breath slower, I'm looking to really warm up and give the body a work out, which this didn't do for me. Plus the lack of audio on the second disc is a huge negative. For me, once I know a routine, the audio is the most important part, cueing me to move from pose to pose. This forces you to constantly look at the screen to follow, which takes you out of alignment and out of the moment.

One-on-One Instruction.......2006-11-07

While no expert, I'm not a beginner with regards to yoga. This DVD, though perfect for beginners, was also very helpful to me. It was like taking a yoga class one-on-one with a very clear and talented instructor. It really focused my attention on where, exactly, your body should be in each individual pose and where your attention should be and where your breath should be. Also, though this is more of a superficial thing, her demeanor and voice were calm and upbeat and not annoying. (that frequently decides whether I will keep or give away a DVD) This would not be the only yoga DVD to practice with, but it would certainly be something to come back to to refocus on the basics. I did feel like it deepened my other practices as well. Highly recommended, excellent for beginners but also for people like me who do not get to go to yoga class very frequently. I will definitely be getting her second flow DVD.

I gave this start 3 stars. 5 starts for the instructional DVD. (This is a 2 DVD set) I think it's a fantastic place for beginners to start. Seane Corn gives you plenty of time to learn and feel the pose and lots of verbal cues . Some people don't, but I also appreciate the spiritual side which is left out in many DVD's focusing only on the "excerise" side of Yoga...
Okay for the 2nd Vinyasa flow DVD...only 1 star. With absolutely no verbal cueing, those of us who have a TV above 12" on the ground must constantly look up to see what the instructor is doing. (Ironically, the very first pose is done with your eye's closed)
I bought this DVD because I have number of instructional DVD's and wanted a pure flow DVD to follow....this one isn't it. Just a cue that the move is changing would have made a huge difference in my score.

The murder rate is as high as an elephant's eye in this flaccid adaptation of Stephen King's short story. While driving through Nebraska en route to a new job, medico Burt (Peter Horton) and his wife Vicky (a pre-Terminator Linda Hamilton) nearly run over a mutilated boy who staggers from the cornfields. Seeking help, they enter the town of Gatlin, whose under-20 residents have butchered their parents per the decree of junior-grade holy roller Isaac (John Franklin), who preaches the word of a being called "He Who Walks Behind the Rows." King's original story (from his 1978 collection Night Shift) was a lean and brutal mélange of Southern-gothic atmosphere and E.C. Comics-style gore, which scripter Greg Goldsmith effectively neutralizes by adding a youthful narrator (a grating Robbie Kiger) and putting an upbeat spin on the story's morbid conclusion. Fritz Kiersch's direction is TV-movie flat, with the sole inspired moment (hideous religious iconography glimpsed during a bloody "service") delivered as a throwaway. Aside from Horton and Courtney Gains (as Isaac's hatchet man Malachai), the performances are dreadful, and the depiction of the Lovecraftian monster-god as a sort of giant gopher inspires more laughter than terror. Amazingly, the film spawned six sequels; Franklin (Cousin Itt in the Addams Family films) later appeared in and wrote 1999's Children of the Corn 666. --Paul Gaita

Malachai is the frightening one here in this adaptation of Stephen Kings short story Children of the Corn.
This movie will give you the creeps during the scenes through the corn fields, the fact that the town has been rid of adults, and then there is the scene--an unexpected scene that involves a child and a car ...enough said. Watch the movie and feel the fright for yourself.

There are some cheesy parts in this movie due to low budget production, but all in all not so bad.

This is an OK movie. I've seen it three or four times and I decided to buy it. I didn't even bother watching all the others because movies that aren't that good usually don't have good sequals either. But this one is good enough to watch although not scary at all. Malachai is pretty cool.

Solid 80's horror from a Stephen King short story.......2007-01-29

Like the majority of adapted Stephen King stories, this 80's horror flick falls short of the source material, although it's pretty cool to actually see the source material on the screen. (Literally, a paperback copy of Night Shift is on the dashboard in front of Linda Hamilton in the opening driving sequence).

The original story is only 30 pages long and a little different from the movie, but again, like the majority of King's work, it just doesn't transfer directly to the screen. The story is slightly modified, but not terribly so. One day the children in a small town decide to rise up and kill all the adults in the town in order to worship HE WHO WALKS BEHIND THE ROWS. This plot-line goes back to one of King's semi-obsessions: the idea that there are small towns out there so remote that no one would even notice when an entire town is massacred and deserted... that is, until a pair of unsuspecting travelers happen upon it.

Rating this movie based on special-effects and film quality standards of today would hardly be fair, and I have a feeling that for the 80's this was a quality film, but obviously, today the climactic scenes, and some stuff leading up to that are pretty "corny"... I knew I'd have to say that.

I haven't seen any of the sequels, and I suspect they're not that great, but this film is worth the time to watch if you're into horror movies. The kids playing Isaac and Malakai are definitely creepy and poor special effects are forgivable if you have creepy kids backing it up.

When I saw this movie I was blown away.It was sad that ALL the adults died,but the weirdest thing is that the signs to gatlin are every where they confuse a couple that are lost on a trip across the country when they stumble onto these children that hail to a demon in the corn when the kids get to old they are sorry,can't tellyou have to see the movie.

I could not sit through this movie. The acting and screenplay are terrible. This film could be described as a bad made-for-tv movie at best.

I ended up fast-forwarding though the entire movie after the first 30 minutes and turned the player off before I reached the end. I couldn't take it anymore. This movie is one of the worst I've attempted to watch in a long time.

Not recommended.

I have been doing yoga for six years, and I have to say that I love this video. I have seen others complaining about the poses being too basic, but I love the attention she pays to alignment and breath. I think that at any level, you can take your practice as deep as you want, and her flow allows and encourages that. I use her videos and always feel amazing afterwards, and can not wait for the next one...

greatly disappointed.............2007-07-15

What a disappointment this was! I consider myself intermed. level in terms of yoga, although i have been dancing for 22 years and am very active in all exercise routines. I don't know a lot of yoga theory, but I like to do it for strength training, and flexibility and the challenge it provides physically as it relaxes me mentally. So far, i have found nothing that compares to Brian Kests'series, and Mark Blanckard trilogy and Yoga Radiance; Four Seasons of Renewal. I bought this DVD after a yoga teacher recommended it for her vinyasa yoga styl, and that Seane Corn was the big hype amongst the celebrities and such. I had high expectation that were sorely unmet. I was looking for something challenging, and refreshing and this was neither. All of her poses and transitions were entirely too basic, which she only had a few poses for the entire DVD-I kept asking myself - is that it? For example, through out the whole DVD she would only move into cobra and never graduated into up dog, her transition to down dog would always go from knees on the floor up to down dog. This is not my kinda style, especially if there is nothing to work towards for improvement.If you are a pre beginner, or have never had any flexibility, this DVD is perfect for you! otherwise, I would keep looking...Good luck!

I was very disappointed by this DVD. I found Seane's tone of voice and manner of speaking to be jarring and abrasive. Even though her lectures emphasize the spiritual elements of yoga, I feel that her practice is extremely focused on the physical. I found that even when I was in a flow of one breath per movement, she was still going too quickly for my taste. I felt like I had to take short, shallow breaths to keep up with her! She has a "yoga boot-camp" vibe that doesn't appeal to me. I much prefer Shiva Rea's Shakti DVD.

I'm relatively new to Yoga but Seane Corn's style and pace was very good for me. She's very knowledgeable, well-spoken, and her instruction was easy to follow.

Great instruction yoga dvd .......2006-08-15

In disk one, Seane Corn teaches in a simple stage alone with beautiful muted music. Some have complained she talks too much, but it's all about the pose, getting in/out, what to watch out for, how to place all body parts (I learned new info even after 4 years & 30 yoga dvds.) Her speaking while moving (not narrating) wasn't hurried or stressed in my opinion at all. I think with all her info it helped me to be more present & not let my mind wander to daily worries. I do like when the yoga teacher speaks since it reminds me to be aware of where my body is & what I am doing.
This DVD contained the usual sun salutations (plank, lunges, upward dog, cobra, downward dog) & triangle, side angle, warrior 1 & 2, child's pose, twisted triangle, butterfly, seated leg stretching just like her first DVD, but also twisted side angle pose, chair/powerful pose, locust, bridge, boat, lotus, alternate standing 1 leg to knee to really stretch the hamstrings, 1 legged stand, wide legged forward bends, twisted indian pose for back, twisted sage pose, bharadvaja's twist & lower back common stretches & ones I've never seen before that worked for me better then others since I'm very flexible, were great & a few I can't remember.

In disk 2 there are 2 sessions.
There is the short form of 40 min that includes most of these poses (sun salutations, lunges, triangle, side angle, lunges, bridge, wide-legged fwd bend, twisted sage pose, etc.) where she guides you WITH TALKING (not narrating overlay) like the first one ending with a 3 min corpse pose.
The second one is an hour & 15 min, but it just music & her slow, deep, perfect breathing.

I will definitely be using this in the future to make sure I keep my posture correct which I realize my form was already sloppy by using this disc.

Made in 1969 and 1970, respectively, these movies exemplify all that was good and bad about biker culture of that era. In Hell's Angels '69, two thrill seekers join the Hell's Angels with the plan to use them as cover for a daring robbery of Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas. The Losers is even more bizarre. Also called Nam's Angels, the film focuses on a group of bikers hired by the U.S. government to rescue a special agent in a Cambodian prison. The portrayal of the bikers is similar in both movies. They are hard-drinking people who love to get into fights, are loyal to each other, and hate cops/military police. Oh, and they're white supremacists. Both movies contain bikers wearing Nazi swastikas, and both movies have some racist banter used as throwaway lines. Despite that, the films are worth recommending as good examples of genre biker films. Hell's Angels '69 has some fascinating shots of Las Vegas before the Strip was fully engulfed in neon, and The Losers is just plain weird. Both movies are obviously influenced by Easy Rider, particularly with their endings, and capture a time in America when things were obviously not going right. --Andy Spletzer

If you are interested in seeing a lot of the real deal Hells Angels, this is the movie. Sonny Barger and Terry the Tramp are stars here, and you see a lot of the others as well. Lots of Bikes too. The plot was interesting, and the movie was good entertainment.

Defective DVD .......2007-02-11

I tried to watch this movie on 3 different dvd players. Would not play on any of them. I bought 2 of the dvd players new within the last 9 months. I even tried it on my computer that has a dvd burner and it just locked up the program. Be Warned!

Okay but not great....................2006-09-28

The Angels did better acting than the actors! They did their own Moto-X stunts,because they fell in the desert a few times and stuntmen would'nt have fallen.I think if the main characters would have stuck to DIRECTING/producing only and not acting/directing/producing, it would have been a lot better made. It was a little mellow and they party much harder than this depicts.It's about a C+ movie,rent it or borrow not really a keeper............The artwork on the cover is cool.

This rather lame tale of two thrill seeking rich boys out to prove they can rob a Las Vegas Casino, and use Hells Angels to do it, would barely merit mention were it not for the fact that the real Oakland Angels are stars in the film.
Sonny Barger, President, Terry the Tramp, Magoo and Cisco, all of the Oakland chapter, and familiar to anyone who has read any of the books about the history of the Angels, are featured heavily here with dialogue and close ups and everything. Terry being the stand out.
The motorcycles range from rather stock late sixties Harleys to a custom built chopper reportedly built by Sonny specially for the film. But these bikes are only featured in the first two thirds of the picture- the final chase scene through the desert has almost the entire cast riding dirt bikes.
Overall an interesting if not great film, just to see the famous Angels, the basis for so many of the genres offerings, in the flesh so to speak.

Let the Fuzz take you alive, the Hell's Angels aren't that particular........2005-11-14

Believe it or not, Hell's Angels 69, released at the tail end of the `biker' genre, was not the first film to feature the Angels (that credit goes to the 1967 film Hells Angels on Wheels), but, it was the first film where the boys actually got speaking parts. Co-written by Jeremy Slade (who also co-stars) and Tom Stern (who also co-stars and produced the movie), with the screenplay by Don Tait (Chrome and Hot Leather, The Apple Dumpling Gang, Herbie Goes Bananas), and directed by Lee Madden (Angel Unchained, The Manhandlers), the movie features Conny Van Dyke (W.W. and the Dixie Dancekings), who, along with appearing on numerous television game shows throughout the 70s was also Motown's first, white recording artist, G.D. Spradlin (The Godfather: Part II, Apocalypse Now, Ed Wood), along with a slew of real life Hell's Angels including Charles `Magoo' Tinsley, John `Terry the Tramp' Tracy, Tiny Walters, Clifford `Skip' Workman, and Ralph 'Sonny' Barger, also known as the Godfather of the Hells Angels and the most famous outlaw Biker in the world.

As the movie begins we're in Los Angeles, at a real swinging party, a happening shindig hosted by two seemingly well-to-do brothers Wes (Slate) and Chuck (Stern), in a groovy apartment complete with wall to wall pink shag carpeting...zowie! The boys talk briefly about some plan, and then cut out early arriving at a posh house in the hills. The next morning we see the two leaving, dressed as bikers, driving a pair of choppers (motorcycles). They ride out into the country and stake out the Hell's Angels (the Oakland chapter, to be specific), eventually weaseling their way into hanging out with the club. The pair participate in various club activities like drinking beer, riding around recklessly, drinking beer, terrorizing a small town, drinking beer, brawling with each other, drinking beer and so on...did I mention they drink beer? Also, Chuck buys Betsy (Van Dyke), a tag along bimbette of the club, for a pack of smokes (I wonder what he could've gotten for a carton). Anyway, after Wes and Chuck get a serious beat down from the bikers (I thought it was an initiation of sorts, but this wasn't the case), they hear the Angels are planning on a road trip, to which Wes and Chuck suggest Las Vegas as a destination, as that's where the action is...or, at least the action as far as their plans go. Turns out Wes and Chuck have designs on robbing one of the casinos, and are planning on using the Angels as part of a diversionary tactic. The group does go to Las Vegas, the brothers manage the heist and get subsequently get away, trading in their choppers for dirt bikes and fleeing across the desert. The Angels, learning of the ruse, are hot on the heels of the deceptive duo and it's not to congratulate them for their recent successes...

Okay, first off I want to mention that there is no huge Las Vegas riot scene in this film, despite the fact that on the front of the DVD case it states "This was the RUMBLE that ROCKED Las Vegas!". This was a little disappointing to me, I was really looking forward to some serious bone snapping, head cracking, blood spilling action as the cops and the bikers participated in an all out battle royale. There is a showdown of sorts, but it ends all rather amicably, and without much fuss. One of the most interesting aspects of the film for me was when the group was cruising the Las Vegas Strip, and seeing how relatively quaint the Las Vegas Strip was compared to today (Caesar's Palace was miniscule to its current form). As far as the acting goes, the `professional' performers did all right (none of them broke a sweat, but the material was very simplistic), while Sonny and his club members, while not professional actors, did well enough, and besides, these aren't the kind of guys I'd think would stand around while the director took take after take after take trying to get the shot right. As far as the story goes this wasn't the best biker movie I've ever saw, but it was far from the worst. At the very least it was kept relatively straightforward. Having real life Hell's Angels present certainly provided a sense of authenticity, and the film does feature a lot of what one expect in a flick like this in the four B's...bikes, boozing, brawling, broads (a bit skimpy on this last one, though). The whole subplot with Van Dyke's character realizing there's more to life than being the property of a biker club seemed awkward at times, and near the end it really dragged on the film as her newfound outlook on life leads to complications between Wes and Chuck, but other than that, the story moved along at a decent pace. The stunts were well done, and the fight scenes felt very real which made me wonder if any of it was staged, or if the guys were just cut loose to go at each other. The funniest scene in the film was when Chuck and Wes changed from their biker outfits into suits and really phony looking wigs, prior to robbing the casino. Had I been on the scene when this happened, and the police later questioned me as to if I saw anything strange or unusual, I would have responded, "What, besides the two guys with really bad crew cut wigs?" All in all an interesting film that plods along at times, and features an ending you might not expect, but one should keep in mind the Hell's Angels had a stipulation in that while they could be depicted as being fooled in the movie, they ultimately had to have the last word.

Media Blasters provides a good looking, fullscreen (1.33:1) picture on this DVD, and the Dolby Digital 2.0 audio comes through clean enough. There are a number of special features including a original trailer for the film, an intro by Joe Bob Briggs, a featurette titled `Conny Van Dyke: Message to Her Fans' (9:30), a Connie Van Dyke photo gallery, liner notes and movie info print on the DVD booklet insert, and a commentary track featuring Joe Bob Briggs. Also included are trailers for other Media Blaster DVD releases like Blood Shack (1971), Hell High (1989), Samurai Cop (1989), and The Hollywood Strangler (1979). The movie itself rates three stars, while Joe Bob Brigg's commentary track earns this release an extra star. That man sure knows his cinematic crud.

If I learned anything from this film it's not to cross the Hell's Angels...they seem reluctant to forgive and forget...and a pack of cigarettes goes far in biker clubs.

Cheesy yet enjoyable..........2006-11-03

I first saw this movie on the Sci-Fi Channel when they were showing 'marathon' of movies featuring dragons. The subject of review says it all 'Cheesy yet enjoyable'. There are parts that are unintentionally funny: Silas' groomed hair, Princess' attire (lingerie and black pants), Girl who yells "Fire!" when operating the catapult (even though she is the one pulling the device). The movie does has its own charm and it is enjoyable (if you can take it for what it's worth -- Sci-Fi Weekend Movie).

I liked the movie so much that I bought from Amazon. Recommended if you like these kind of movies. =)

... Now how do you start a review of this kind of movie. Was it a movie? When all of a DOZEN towns people at the gate are waving farewell and sending the would be heros into battle against the (wonderfully computer rendered)dragons doesn't that just somehow seem sad. We six Heros will die so that the dragons won't eat the rest of you! Thats right all 11 of...oh Im sorry didn't see you there, ALL TWELVE of you. I especially like how in this town of twelve+heros there happens to be a traveling deadly martial arts guy, a beautiful girl with a huge crossbow on wheels,(talk about envy) and the robin hood guy, except he's actually from outside the town. So I'm going to stop now before I cry... Yes it was that bad. But as always watch it for the Heck of it and try not to be upset about time lost in a vigilant attempt to make sense out of the dragon storm movie thing..experience thing.

Well-Done Fun!.......2006-01-17

This movie is just a bit of fun! The acting, directing and production values are very good. Maxwell Caulfield makes an excellent reluctant hero and John Rhys Davies injects humor into his villanous role. The medieval setting is more convincing and less glamorous than in many movies I've seen. The script is pretty good, as dragon eggs land like comets on the earth, but we aren't sure at first (and neither are the characters) what they are. Even though the movie is not a bloodfest, it is too scary for children. The dragons do kill people, there is a fair amount of suspense, and the dragons are frightening.

Oh my, this movie was God-awful. It has the feel throughout of a group of first time actors playing medieval dress-up and dragons for the camera. The special effects consist of computer-generated dragons and an extreme overuse of people's backs getting set on fire... that's pretty much it. The plot is also very weak and so typical. The fighting scenes are horribly choreographed and the acting is so bad that it looks like first time efforts for every actor except for the two kings and Theldag. Picture Ben Stiller with a slight beard, medieval clothes, and a wig. That's the hero in this calamity of a movie. There's also the typical trite and very poor attempt at humor spattered throughout also. This is definitely a low budget title. It's also in 4:3 full screen only. I consider this movie purchase one of the worst I have ever made, but it was cheap. You get what you pay for.

Least entertaining COTC I've seen so far..........2007-07-18

I recently started rewatching the COTC movies in order, when I hit this one, I quit while I was ahead. Not much to say about this one really. This movie completely departs from the whole "He who walks behind the rows" story of the previous films, and gives us some plot about all the kids in town falling victim to some sickness that eventually renders them mindless followers of some sort of cult. About ten minutes before the movie is over, it is awkwardly explained that this happened because the evil spirit of some boy preacher has risen and wants revenge for something or other...that in itself is a testament to how interested this movie kept me.

I don't know why this is even a COTC movie because it doesn't even have anything to do with the corn, apart from the fact that the characters live near a cornfield. Death scenes are pretty well done, however not enough gore or scares in general to keep anybody interested...The only thing that does keep you interested is Naomi Watts because she is smokin' hot in this movie. That's really the only redeeming aspect of this film. Even if you love COTC, just skip this complete dud, you aren't missing anything.

Corn movie review.......2007-06-11

I think the movie lack nudes at excessive levels.
The movie needed more corn in it. There needs to be a part to this movie to tighten the true of its' existence. God know what I am talking about. Overall this movie goes in an area of wonder. I mean I and other people would wonder why didn't the first movie tell these people something. Who does not know that children should not play all kinds of grown up games and fantasies in the corn field or fields. God know what I am talking about!

I gotta tell ya, this series isn't rocketing down the drain with the sorta speed I woulda imagined. In fact, this one is actually better than 3 in a number of ways, though not enough better for it to actually be, ya know, good, so it's actually less entertaining. But hell, I didn't mind seeing it, and it was amusing enough for me to continue on with the series.

This one isn't directly related to any of the earlier films. It's more of a knockoff than a sequel, really. There's no reference to Gaitlin but it is still in Nebraska, in uh, some other town. Also, there is corn, but it ain't directly related to the action in any way. Still, ya have got a lotta evil children with Old testament style names, so it's got the same basic flavor. This one involves Grace, who came back to Nebraska to take care of her crazy, ailing mother. She's a med student and goes to work in the local doctor's office while she's there. A strange plague breaks out, affecting various children, but no one else. They all seem to recover spontaneously, but definitely aren't the same, anymore. I gotta tell ya, I kinda like this plot. The execution isn't very good, but it's got a decent base. I think they coulda made a decent script from this premise, and this isn't as laughable as the kinda ultra-cheap horror usually is.

Though this movie has got a fair bit of gore in it, it's actually trying to be more conventionally scary than the prior sequels seemed to be. It can't pull this off, but it is a bit less silly than some of the earlier stuff. Still, it has got some decent gore, and they use the scythe a whole lot. There wasn't nearly enough scythe action in the prior CotC films.

This movie gets some extra attention cause it stars Naomi Watts. Some people will tell you that her performance here is a lot better than you'd usually see in this kinda film, but ehh, I dunno. It's better, yeah, but not that much better, and still the stuff of B-movies. Karen Black is a lotta fun as her crazy mother, however. No one else makes much of an impression.

This movie has some pacing problems, as a bit too much of the gore is stuffed towards the beginning, and it fails to really build in anyway. It just kinda meanders along, arrives at the climax, and then ends.

Yeah, I guess I'm done. I sufficiently diverting little B-movie. Those who want to see this know who they are.
