Simple yet riveting, The Untold Story of Emmett Louis Till articulates the madness of racism in the South of the 1950s. Combining archival photos and footage with deeply felt interviews, this documentary tells the harrowing story of what happened when a mischievous 14 year old black boy from Chicago, visiting his relatives in Mississippi, whistled at a white woman in the street. The lynching that followed was so gruesome that a media circus surrounded the trial--and what stunned the nation was not only the crime, but the blithe unconcern the citizens of a small Mississippi town felt toward the brutal murder of a black teenager. The interviews suspensefully unveil the story, moving from the viewpoint of Till's mother to the perspective of his Southern cousins to actual film of Till's uncle, who had the astonishing courage to accuse the two killers in court. Till's mother, Mamie Till-Mobley, addressed the entire country in news footage, begging that something be done so that her son did not die in vain. The awkward, un-media-savvy quality of the 1950s interviews may seem to come from another world, but the harsh truth of what happened sprang all too clearly from America's still unresolved racial conflicts. A passionate, compelling documentary. --Bret Fetzer

Description

In August 1955, Mamie Till-Mobley of Chicago sent her only child, 14 year-old Emmett Louis Till, to visit relatives in the Mississippi Delta. Little did she know that only 8 days later, Emmett would be abducted from his Great-Uncle's home, brutally beaten and murdered by one of the oldest Southern taboos: whistling at a white woman in public. The murderers were soon arrested but later acquitted of murder by an all-white, all-male jury.

Keith Beauchamp's groundbreaking film is the result of a 10-year journey to uncover the truth behind the nightmarish murder of an innocent African-American teenager. Emmett's brutal murder - and his family's brave actions in the horrifying aftermath- served as a major impetus for America's civil rights movement and led to Rosa Parks and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to make decisions that changed the course of history.

Discover for yourself why the Chicago Tribune wrote, "If you don't believe film can change the world, you haven't seen The Untold Story of Emmett Louis Till."

5 out of 5 stars Great Documentary - A Must See For All People.......2007-08-09

Anybody that is interested in learning how the Civil Rights Movement started should watch this film. This is the true and untold story of Emmett Till's murder, told by his mother and other family members. When you watch it you will never forget it. This film should be shown to all teenagers and adults to remind them of the hatred and injustice that once was in this country. Keith Beauchamp reminds us that, "If we forget our past, history will repeat itself".

4 out of 5 stars An important piece of history.......2007-02-27

I recently had the opportunity to see Nikki Giovanni speak. She discussed her children's book about Rosa Parks giving up her seat, and briefly mentioned that she deliberately put Emmett Till's name in one of the newspapers a passenger was reading. I knew the name Emmett Till, but I never really knew the entire story. I'd heard about this documentary before, and I thought it would be worth a closer look.

Emmett was fourteen years old in 1955 when he visited his cousins in Mississippi, whistled at a white woman, and was killed three days later in what has to be one of the most brutal beatings in history. His death was arguably the biggest catalyst in the civil rights movement.

This film, made by Keith Beauchamp, is the result of eight years of research. He got the opportunity to interview several eyewitnesses, including Till's mother, who has since passed. He weaves this footage together with old news coverage, which paints a very clear picture of the events.

The most chilling part of the film is when Till's mother describes opening her son's coffin and looking at his body. As she describes his injuries, the screen cuts to a picture of Till's mangled face and doesn't change for almost fifteen seconds. As Al Sharpton comments, "It's hard to view a corpse and turn your head."

The only reason I gave the film four stars instead of five is that I found it to be a little self-congratulatory. It concludes with CNN footage announcing the reopening of the case fifty years after Till's death. Beauchamp made sure to select a clip in which the news anchor mentions the film and cites it as the reason the case was reopened. I'm not disputing that, but was it really necessary to include that, particularly as a way to conclude the film?

Other than that, though, I seriously suggest everyone watch this. It's an ugly but important part of our history. You also might want to pick up 4 Little Girls, the Spike Lee documentary about a 1963 church bombing in Birmingham.

5 out of 5 stars Life And Death In The Delta.......2007-02-23

This Documentary was well done, based on the 1955 brutal lynching of 14 year old Emmett Louis Till, an African American teenager just trying to have a good time with his family and friends. Until he whistled at a white woman, Carolyn, wife of Roy Bryant, Sister-n-Law of J. W. Milam. These 2 men were accused and aquitted of the heinous crimes that took Emmett Till's young life. This is true crime and is well worth the money, watching this film has made me cry for the family of Emmett, it was devastating to watch how the Mississippi court system back in 1955 let 2 animals go after admitting they kidnapped and murdered someone. How gruesome. Emmett Louis Till deserved what any other person deserved, to live and love, instead his life was cut short. This is very painful to watch. Emmett's Mother, Mrs. Mobley, was such an inspiration, her words touched me, she was a wonderful woman.
This is a must-see film, it is always a good idea to see history so we do not forget what "civilized" man is capable of. This unfortunate young man's death sparked the Civil Rights Movement. It hurts me to know what others can do to each other. See this film for yourself. Thank you.

4 out of 5 stars Gret, but see this before the "American Experience" DVD.......2006-10-08

This is a great documentary about the Till case, as director Keith Beauchamp clearly cares a lot about this subject and it shows. It does feature a few people who were not interviewed in previous Till books or documetnaries (some who appear only in shadows and under assumed names on camera) and one lady witness even reveals one of the biggest mysteries of the Till case-the name of the Black traitor who told Milam and Bryant about the alleged "wolf whistle." (This appears in the director's commentary). We also see some post-production footage of the Till case being reopened because of some of these interviews.

However, I would have to give the edge to the "American Experience" documentary DVD on this subject, as that one does a better job of getting the viewer to know who Emmett Till was as a person before the murder and as he grew up in Chicago.

Both are good, so I would recommend to those who want to know about the Till case to watch both of these DVDs.

5 out of 5 stars The Till Family .......2006-08-20

As a youth growing up in Chicago, this story was discussed around the table whenever "grown folks" started talking. I can remember that this particular incident held much weight due to the fact that Mamie Till-Mobley, a well respected member of the black community, was also known to be from the part of town where people were "well off". As I grew older, this story haunted me so I tried to find more information, but the history books at school were limited and pieces of information gradually surfaced more and more as the year went by. I am gratefully for this documentary. It is well put together and the truth is as palpable as the memories it conjures up. Till's story is an American Story. Unfortunately, remnants of those very issues still linger in our society and education is still the key to finding solutions.

4 out of 5 stars I Really Enjoyed Watching This.......2007-07-23

I really enjoyed watching this. It had rare footage that I hadn't seen since 1968. It reminded me why I supported him in 1968, even though I wasn't old enough to vote yet. It brought tears to my eyes.

5 out of 5 stars A great RFK documentary.......2007-07-10

Having read one biography already on Robert F. Kennedy and searching relentlessly on the internet for information regarding this man, I already had some good knowledge on RFK before watching this American Experience episode. I was very surprised, although the documentary did state some things I had known previously from reading, the DVD provides more insight into the strained relationship between LBJ and RFK. The archival footage of the Senate Rackets Committee and home movies from Hickory Hill added an authentic touch to the documentary, giving the life of RFK a new light. I was also pleased that they didn't spend too much time on his childhood, but just enough to highlight his traits that would carry with him throughout his life. Overall, American Experience: RFK is a great film for anyone who wants to know the basics of Bobby Kennedy and his ever-changing life. It mentions almost every major event in RFK's career and personal life, as well. From the Civil Rights Crisis to the death of his brother and to his own candidacy for the Presidency. A great film for anyone who wants to know more about Robert F. Kennedy.

5 out of 5 stars Watch this with your teenagers!.......2006-03-27

I got this for my kids to see. It is really good! The DVD is very heavily b&w and my 13 y.o was not really looking forward to watching it, but the PBS team does a good job of showing the human side of RFK, even in "old black and white". And of course as he gets older the clips turn to color film. I had forgotten what a rock star Bobby was in those days. He was like the Beatles, filling stadiums with people screaming for him. I guess America really wanted him to fill his brother's shoes. And the narrator is explaining all this and then, boom, you know what happens next. It was just shocking for my kids, who came to understand the 60s so much more after seeing this DVD with me. Get it and sit and watch it with your teens.

5 out of 5 stars A STORY OF HOPE AND POSSIBILITIES FOR US ALL!.......2005-11-30

This was one of the most inspiring documentaries about anyone that I have ever seen!

WHAT IT IS:

Real simple - We see Robert K. Kennedy evolve like we all wish we could. We see the raw materials, the obvious potential in him early on and his high moral standards, and then we watch him go through a very fast course in empirical human experience and wisdom - THE HARD WAY!

But somehow he comes through all the adversity a better human being. WOW! His sincerity is absolutely unmistakable in this compelling story of his life.

WHAT IT MEANS TO US:

You be the judge of what it means to you. To me, it shows what could be done, what should be done and most of all that people that are highly capable and competitive don't have to become ruthless and stay that way. RFK certainly proved that point and I find myself admiring him more now than ever. Seeing his life come full circle and grow to truly care about all people is heartwarming.

Unfortunately, after he won the California Primary and had given a speech about the goodness of us as a people, he was assassinated in front of many of his supporters and the world, via television.

ALL IN ALL:

RFK's life is one which can teach us much by example. Though obviously tragic, it is a story of hope and possibilities for us all.

DVD FEATURES:

2 Bonus featurettes: an interview with the film maker plus "If He Had Lived". These give an added frame of reference to an already clear picture of RFK's life and include interviews.

5 out of 5 stars There should be a 6 star rating........2005-11-08

There is nothing else to be said about this DVD. Get it and watch in awe. Well put together, very nicely done chronilogically, most topics discussed well (you really can't expect to have everything in a documentary like this), cripes man this is a video eulogy. Watch it, enjoy it like a fine wine.

This is utterly amazing that a situation of this magnitude even took place. My students were astounded by this DVD, and had many questions. Truly, a very good show of racism in America. We need to begin teaching true history and not glossed over African and African-American history.

4 out of 5 stars The More Things Change...........2006-04-02

In 1995, Susan Smith drowned her own sons and blamed it on a Black man. In the 1990s, about a dozen Black men were on death row in Illinois, and none of them had actually committed the crime. Some may think the oppression of Black men in the American criminal justice system is new or sporadic, but it has a long history. Few outside of African-American studies enthusiasts remember the Scottsboro case. Luckily, this program has been made to remind the masses of injustice in this country. Because character Michael Evans was right in asserting that "Boy is a white, racist term!", I cringed hearing these accused being called "boys." However, each of the accused were between the ages of 13 and 19 when a white woman of questionable morals framed them during the Great Depression.

This tragedy will remind many of the O.J. Simpson case of the last decade: the dynamics were much larger than the individuals involved. Just as Emmett Till's murderers went free, here a Southern court and its players made incorrect decisions just to maintain the status quo and tell Northerners, "Leave us alone!" There are elements of anti-Semitism here as well as racism.

I don't care for André Braugher as an actor, but he did a good job of narrating this work. Actors re-interpreted the court dialogue, but photos were the visuals, instead of modern background actors being recorded. People who love Court TV will love seeing this, besides the serious issues here, this is basically a court drama, a genre that many Americans love.

I continue to applaud the "American Experience" series for including the low points of American history and not just the high points. I also thank them for including people of color, and how we've been wronged.

Hands down, the BEST documentary out there about New Orleans. For the first time ever, a documentary that's been produced by someone not from New Orleans that actually "gets" our city. It really has the voice of the people and demonstrates to the rest of the world why New Orleans is so unique and why it's so important for us to preserve this great American city. It even talks about tourists that come to New Orleans and only experience the 5 blocks of Bourbon Street then leave, never seeing the true beauty of this place. It explores the full history of the city, from its birth to the current situation and why the city was the way it was when Katrina struck. It also talks about different facets of the culture that makes it so distinct. Did I mention that it's the BEST New Orleans documentary out there? What are you waiting for? Buy it already!

5 out of 5 stars My first review .......2007-03-30

This is the best thing out there on New Orleans. If you have any interest in New Orleans - why we cook like we do, dance like we do, play music like we do - this gives it to you. This is from the PBS series "American Experience" and PBS did it well. This is not a "Katrina" piece. Although Katrina factors in at the end, it is not the focus. Here the story starts with the folks that founded the City and moves through to Katrina. Along the way, it pulls no punches and includes the lowlights with the highlights. Even if you know New Orleans, there is plenty here that you will enjoy. I'm getting extras for gifts.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous story of behind scenes activities in the OJ trial.......2001-09-23

This is a tape of the made for television movie about the behind the scenes activities of the defense in the OJ Simpson trial. This movie spares no one and paints a very unfavorable view of all the lawyers. The movie is based on Robert Cardasians (sp?) book. No one at the end of the trial has any doubt that OJ is the murderer or a violent person as evidenced by Johnny Cochrans comment to one of his colleagues after OJ becomes enraged with him "I was just glad I didn't have long blond hair". The defense often views Judge Ito as a dunce, laughing after he becomes outraged with their antics. The most interesting thing is the lawyers at one point realize OJ is in many ways smarter and more talented than all his lawyers at formulating strategy and getting a team to work together. However, OJ is portrayed as a very violent and dispicable individual.

    Description

Academy Award-nominated LEGACY is the unflinching chronicle of one family's triumphant journey out of povery and despair. Touchingly narrated by Nickcole Collins, a teenage girl wise beyond her years, the film follows the Collins family over five years as they slowly pull themselves out of a haze of poverty, drug addiction, and violence that plagues their public housing project in Chicago. Stereotype-busting and open-minded, LEGACY paints the American Dream in honest colors to rousing effect. Improbably, the senseless killing of 14-year-old Terrell, a straight-A student and role model for the neighborhood, spurs the family to seek a better life against impossible odds. Nickcole's mother, a high school dropout, moves in fits and starts to find a meaningful job. Aunt Wanda, mother of Terrell and longtime crack addict, enrolls herself in a drug treatment program. Nickcole catapults herself out of the inner-city trap to a college degree and a comfortable life. It's impossible not to cheer for these incredible real-life people as they cry and laugh, stumble and get back up again on their way to something better. In LEGACY, award-winning filmmaker Tod Lending does that rarest of things--he gives voice to the voiceless. The result is a stirring, must-see film that is "inspirational in the best sense of the term" (Variety). If you're looking for an unrepentantly flag-waving, pro-Bush depiction of the President's actions in the wake of 9/11, look no further--DC 9/11: Time of Crisis will have any fan of Michael Moore reaching for an airsickness bag. "Whoever did this isn't going to like me as president," intones Timothy Bottoms as George W. Bush, who never speaks with anything but firm resolve and terse machismo; this slick Showtime production even imagines heroic pillow talk between the President and the First Lady. Donald Rumsfield, Dick Cheney, and the rest of the administration are all portrayed as selfless and well-informed civil servants, and the movie subtly promotes the USA Patriot Act, increased military spending, and the policy of pre-emptive war. DC 9/11 also mixes documentary footage of the 9/11 attacks and rescue efforts with fictional accounts of the behind-closed-doors meetings, which will polarize any discussion of its subject matter. --Bret Fetzer

    Description

DC 9/11: Time of Crisis focuses on the difficult decisions and tasks faced by President Bush and his staff on September 11, 2001 and the days following the attacks. This dramatic film will be released shortly before the third anniversary of September 11th. Based on in-depth interviews and extensive research, the film recounts the tragic events from the moment Bush hears the news of the attacks to significant briefings with advisors. Chronicling national security meetings, which piece together evidence linking Osama bin Laden and the Al Caeda network, the film uncovers how Bush and his staff dealt with the volatile situation. In addition, DC 9/11: Time of Crisis illustrates the Administration's strategy for responding both to the terrorists and the American people. Eschewing their own feelings and healing process, the President and his team instead tended to the needs of a wounded country.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great movie! This is like being there!.......2007-07-24

I was very pleased to watch this movie; the casting is excellent! You feel you are watching history as it happened; the Timothy Bottoms is has such a resemblance to President Bush. All of the characters are perfect.
If you like a suspenseful drama well-made and of high quality, this is it. I would recommend it to all my friends as a keep-sake of that very important event in our lifetime. Everyone should appreciate the good work the producers have done to make this moment in time into a quality movie that we can keep for all of our purposes. I highly recommend it!

1 out of 5 stars Why can't you put zero stars?.......2007-03-04

Taking an event like 9/11 and using it to persuade the audience to see Dubya in a more favorable way is the most disgusting, below-the-belt act in politics. That is exactly what this movie is. The sole purpose of producing it was to increase Bush's polls. The attacks were emotional and devastating, and there is no excuse to try to play into one's emotions that way for an image. Will we ever be able to mourn without having this type of political propaganda shoved down our throats? I am in no way close-minded, and I can attempt to understand people actually liking this crap... But come on, it doesn't take a genius to see the message behind the so-called "facts" displayed in the movie: Bush is a great guy. A great president. A hero.... Whatever. Is it 2008 yet?

4 out of 5 stars Well done insightful drama.......2006-10-29

Some might say it puts a positive spin on the Bush administration's activities on 9/11 and the following days but I would challenge anyone to find anything portrayed which was not factual. Consider it a dramatization of historical events which changed our lives forever. You can be sure it will be shared with my children and grandchildren. There should be more of this genre produced based upon factual events. It is a shame the likes of Michael Moore get so much more publicity for pseudo-documentaries based on half-truth and out-right lies while this film, which factually portrays our leaders in a positive light, is pushed aside as propaganda due to political bias. "A Bright and Shining Lie", "We Were Soldiers" and "DC 9/11 A Time of Crisis" should all be presented in high school history classes. They display America at its best when the rest of the world is running the other direction. This movie is a rare opportunity to see what happens behind closed doors as historic decisions are made. It also gives the viewer great insight into the intricacies, variables, cause and affect of the decisions made by the Executive Branch of the U.S. Government during a true crisis.

2 out of 5 stars A funny piece of work........2006-10-11

This movie is funny. I'm not even considering my political view in this.

The actors look nothing like the people they try so desperately to portray. The actor does a better job on Comedy Central then here. But it's so comedic that I'm shocked they didn't sponser this. With the exception of the Con. Rice, the people don't act nothing like the real-life counterparts. When it's not funny, it's depressingly bad.

I cannot give it one star, as I laughed too much. But I feel three is too much. So two stars it is.

1 out of 5 stars Worse Than Just a Waste of Time............2006-10-02

Hmmmmm. No "0 star" rating, so "1 star" will have to do.

The summary says "Based on real life accounts," but this is so far removed from any "real life" events that it should have a content advisory label to warn viewers against excessive levels of historical distortion. Apparently there is only some small fraction of 1% of "docu" needed to sell a partison acid trip like this and call it a "docudrama."

I don't remember actually throwing away a DVD before, but "DC 9/11 Time of Crisis" was so bad that I actually destroyed the disc before putting it the trash ---I just had to be sure that there'd be no risk of it ever spinning up again.

If you want to see content that truly is "Based on real life accounts," treat yourself to Greenwald's "Uncovered - The War on Iraq." There's almost no commentary, just a steady flow of interviews, news footage, etc., and, without the benefit of screenplay propaganda, the Bush administration presents the "real life accounts" that show the true colors behind their leadership and management....
