Silent Wings DVD Review.......2007-08-06
A month ago a man in my late father's platoon set me the DVD "Silent Wings" the story of American glider pilots during World War II. Since this man, Bill Shorter and my Dad Charles Wilber were glider riders I found this nearly 2-hour documentary very informative and a pleasure to watch. Many Americans don't realize that the gliders were an important and dangerous part of the American airborne forces during that war. Using interviews with both German and American glider pilots along with great insite by reporters Walter Cronkite and Andy Rooney the DVD was excellant. It not only showed American glider action but also German glider assualts. I recommend this documentary for not only WWII buffs but anyone interested in history.

When my graduating grandson (heading for college) asked me about "gliders" in wartime for an essay on WWII, my interest in anything that flies answered some of his questions, and to reinforce it, I got him the copy of Silent Wings and that gave him a better documented story; bravery, heroism, victory and tragedy.
A Long Past Due Tribute.......2007-05-15
They all volunteered - to serve in a branch of the service that no longer exists. They knew they were to be pilots on a one-way mission. Fly them in and then grab a rifle and join the infantry. That was the lot of a Glider Pilot. The G on their wings surely stood for "Guts"
Watch this exciting tape and you will certainly want to tip your hat to the few living veterans of this extrodinary branch of the Army Air Corp.

I did not know the full history of the glider pilots. Now I do, and I am impressed and awed by their unselfishness and heroics. Everyone interested in WWII should see this documentary.

An amazing movie.......2004-10-04
I recently had the opportunity to view this film in its original IMAX format and it was quite an amazing experience. As someone who has recently taken a strong interest in the sport of skydiving, as well as BASE jumping (which I have yet to try), I found this movie as intriguing as any I have ever seen. Not only does this movie provide continuous outstanding shots of professional skydivers and BASE jumpers from around the globe, but it also takes you in great depth, into what goes on inside a person's head, and body, when they take life to the edge. Adrenaline Rush is a fun ride, and provides spectacular insight into what makes people push life to the extreme. I would recommend this DVD to anyone who as ever thrown themselves out of plane, off of a cliff, or anyone who has even the slightest bit of Adrenaline Junkie in them.

As far as Imax / bigscreen films go, this was only mediocre. The resolution is not up to par (not surprising, considering the weight of a true Imax camera). This is really more of a typical PBS show for the movies. It ends well, but the content is a little thin. The air shots, though, are very good and the skydivers are talented. Seeing the da Vinci parachute is obviously unique and worth the entry price for scientific historians or parachute / skydiver aficianados.

Joan Severance is back.......2007-07-12
Joan Severance is finally back. Joan plays a bored housewife (Lisa), who starts having an affair with a much younger, right out of high school guy. Corbin Bernsen plays the unknowing husband. the story is somewhat good and watchable. The photography is not that great. But lets get down to it, the only reason to watch it to begin with is because of Joan Severance.
Some of Joan's other works are a little better than this one, such as Payback, and Dangerous Indiscretions. But the movie over all was not bad, decent plot and good acting. Joan Definitely sizzled and was perfect to play the part. There was some great nudity in the unrated version. Joan Severance still has an amazing body. The Photography does show Joan's wonderful attributes several times, however, photography could have been much better with angles, lighting, and a little more time for Joan to astonish.
Sex and consequences is worth seeing if only for Joan Severance's captivating acting and great body. Good acting, plot, and nude scenes(although the nude scenes could have been longer with better photography). Joan Severance still has it, and hopefully will star in more films soon.

A married woman has an affair with a male high school graduate. This is a B-movie meant for those seeking titillation.
Wearing my feminist cap, it's good that older woman-younger man movies can be made and not just older man-younger woman ones. But that's where the good stuff stops. In typical, heteropatriarchal fashion, there is female nudity here, but no male nudity.
In the same way that "Juwanna Mann" asked all the given questions about a man posing as a female basketball player, this asks all the questions you'd expect. Will the husband find out? Why isn't the younger man seeking women his age? Will the younger man's parents find out? How long can this relationship last? It's funny that many American filmmakers and television producers are squeamish about teen sexuality, and yet the young lover here is constantly drinking alcohol though he's probably 18 and not 21.
The ending may surprise some, but it will be obvious to many.

This is supposed to be a DVD where girls strip in public places and hope that they don't get caught. That would be exciting.
Instead, in some scenes the girl isn't even outside. Stripping in a closed bar doesn't count as "nude in public". In other scenes, they are indeed outside, but usually in a secluded area, and they will even converse with the few people who are there. There's no effort to hide the fact that the girl is naked from the other people. So really, nobody "Risks it All", as the DVD promises. The whole thrill of being naked where others can see the girl is therefore lacking.
Also, if the girl is nude and facing the camera, the camera doesn't go below her waist. This DVD is supposed to market nudity... so why hide her lower half if she's just standing there? That's awfully tame for someone who's supposed to be doing something risky, don't you think?

Higher Education has NOT Declined in Quality.......2007-06-29
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Several people in my family, including me, have college degrees. I received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 2005 from an average state university. In addition, I was awarded an associate's degree in 2002 from a school that everyone says is the easiest junior college. Also, my father received his bachelor's degree in political science from UCLA around the year 1966. UCLA did not have the level of prestige that it has today, but it was still a well respected university. Likewise, my mother completed her first year of college at UCLA and then transferred to Boston University to complete the rest of her bachelor's degree. She received her degree in sociology around the year 1968.

In this video, John Merrow claims that higher education in America has declined in standards and quality over the past 25 years. However, based on what my parents have told me, I seriously doubt it. After they described their experiences, I have learned that the quality of higher education today is just as good if not better than it was 40 years ago.
First, higher education critics complain that the college students today receive less work compared to forty years ago, but my father telling me about his college years has made me believe otherwise. Today one can usually get by without doing any of the assigned readings, because usually the exams are mainly based on the class lectures. However, this was also true when my father went to UCLA. Furthermore, I had about the same amount of reading that he had even at the junior college. We both had about 30 pages of reading per week in each course.
Not only have I not received any less work than my parents, they told me that throughout my college career, I actually received more work than they did. At the junior college alone, I was given more writing assignments than they were. While I attended this junior college, I had a term paper in almost every class (excluding math courses) even though my father had a total of only about 3 papers throughout his entire time as an undergraduate. This is despite everyone saying that this school is easier than all the other junior colleges. In addition, at the four year university, I was required to do a major research project at the end of my senior year (called the senior thesis). I was supposed to write a 20 - 30 page paper on my research for this project. My father never had to do any project like that.
In addition to describing their college education, my father has concluded based on his experience teaching law school for the past 30 years that today's college graduates are just as educated as they were yesterday. During that period, he taught only first year students, all of whom had bachelor's degrees, and he has not noticed any change in the quality of his students over the years. This is despite the fact that college is supposed to prepare one for law school by teaching one how to think. For example, an undergraduate education is supposed to develop ones own critical thinking skills, analytical skills, etc. These skills are needed to succeed in law school. Given this and that he taught only first year students, if undergraduate education has really declined, my father would have noticed it. He has not.
Overall, this video does not seem to match up to reality. I have learned by talking to my mother and father that the quality of higher education in America today is at least as good as it was yesterday. Therefore, I know that the entire premise of this video is false. Don't waste your money buying it.
Good critique; small sample size; not much advice on how to fix our plight.......2007-02-11
What follows in this review are quotations and statistics copied almost verbatim from viewing this documentary. I include what I think are the most important historical, statistical, and insightful critiques of the state of current higher education from this DVD....
Every fall, more than 14 million freshman undergrads at 4200 colleges begin higher education. Drinking has always been a problem on campus but in 2005, 39% of students admit to binge drinking. In 2005, 68% of today's college students are working at least 15 hours per week 20 % are trying to hold down full-time jobs while taking a full-time academic work load. 44% of today's college faculties are part-time teachers. On average almost ½ of students at 4-year colleges leave before graduating. 60 years ago public, governmental support for higher education was stronger. FDR signed into law the GI Bill it was a "mass movement" towards higher education. Higher education became the "highway to the middle class." In 1972 the federal government opened to the poor giving low income students grants that did not have to be paid back, these were called Pell Grants. These Pell Grants had about 3 or 4 billion dollars in it and covered about 95 % of tuition at an average 4-year university. "All that began to change when the research indicated that having a college degree added a million dollars to your lifetime earnings." Richard Hersh, former president of Trinity College, adds, "In the last 25 to 30 years since that Reagan Administration, since the 80s, we've decided that it's a private good, that because you benefit from going to college economically your salaries go up." And so we've said well let the individual pay for it then. Kay McClenney of the University of Texas at Austin adds, "Instead of recognizing that higher education has major social benefits." Government funding moved away from grants to low interest loans. Pell Grants that used to pay about 95% of tuition costs only pays about ½ today. Nationally, Merit-based aid has nearly quadrupled in the last 10 years. In 2005 nearly 8.8 billion dollars are handed out to high achieving students because colleges want them. Kay McClenney says that "we're helping the people god already helped, and we're leaving behind people who truly cannot afford to participate in the system." Market forces are what driving the "quality" of competing educational institutions. One of the years that PBS covered Arizona State University, the basketball team brought in 13.5 million dollars in revenue. 4 million went back into the basketball program; 9.5 million helps fund 17 other varsity sports. Coach Lute Olson reportedly earns over a million dollars coaching Arizona which is double the income the president of the university earns. Frank Deford, a sportswriter, says, "Athletics are a goiter on the educational system." The University of Arizona's contract with Nike is worth about a million dollars per year, 350,000 of that goes to Coach Olson. Lara Couturier of Brown University says, "Athletics is one of the areas of higher education that's already gone to far."
Excellent, Trenchant, Fascinating.......2006-02-13
This two-hour analysis of contemporary American higher education articulates several critical issues in a coherent and trenchant manner.
Within a two-hour period, the producers very effectively manage to brush an integrated issue-centered portrait of higher education. The picture they paint presents viewers with a disconcerting sense that something is deeply and structurally flawed in the American academy.
Specific issues include:
1) The commercialization of higher education, especially in college sports;
2) the decline of teaching in favor of "research";
3) the increasing cost of higher education for students;
4) the lack of coherence and structure within public higher education entities;
5) the reality of "uneducated" college graduates; and
6) the suboptimal levels of dog-eat-dog competition among peer institutions for ever-higher (perhaps spurious) rankings.
These and other issues are given concrete expression in the several case studies of widely varying students over a one year period. The sometimes abstract issues are brought closer to home when we see what, for example, higher costs mean for folks who are not born into privilege.
Also very useful was the insertion of commentary by experts - I found the very articulate Lara Couturier's remarks particularly helpful and insightful. However, all the experts assembled by the producers were dead-on in their analyses (my bias!).
One criticism I have perhaps may reflect less on the substance of the documentary than on what was excluded from the work. Of particular relevance is the perennial issue of faculty work load. It is no secret that faculty, especially tenured faculty, have considerable amounts of....free time.
Research clearly shows over the last few decades there has been a declining number of hours spent teaching in the classroom among tenured faculty at large universities. If faculty are teaching less, and student enrollment is increasing, then the effective demand for instruction increases while the effective supply of instruction decreases. The result is the costs of instruction increase, and this increase is passed on students and state legislatures (taxpayers).
The faculty, after all, are the productive human capital producing educated & degreed individuals. Students "consume" the faculty's profession of knowledge!
To be fair, the documentary skirted the issue by noting a professor at Amherst makes $113,000 per year to teach four classes.

Very Good Insight on a lot of Issues in Higer Education.......2005-12-23
In response to the original reviewer: maybe you should have watched the movie before showing it to your students. It's teaching of this nature that this movie highlights. And perhaps teachers in higher education aren't that great lately is due to -- as this documentary highlights -- the fact that they're under paid, over worked, and poorly treated. I know, I'm a college instructor, too, and I coordinate a tutoring center, so I have a very clear idea of what the current state of affairs is. I think this movie brings up some very current important issues that a lot of people outside of academia -- and even some inside -- just don't even realize.
Tries to cover all, but misses some points by a mile and more.......2005-09-17
As a non-tenured college professor struggling between trying to maintain scholarly excellence, inspiring students to work, and appeasing increasingly unreasonable demands from administration, I thought I'd do myself AND students a service by, perhaps, showing them this film. It was not what I had hoped it would be. While the documentary starts strong, with some fun yet somewhat disturbing interviews with students who seem to find plenty of time to party, yet sleep in classes and end up having to drop out, it soons fizzles out into a boring, often disconnected narrative about the beurocratic system and its budget-based decisions.
What is most disconcerting is a manipulative "cheap-shot" at one especially inarticulate professor, who, when posed with the question, "One would say that it is because you are boring that students are not interested in studying" cannot seem to muster any better of a response than "I think you're playing devil's advocate. I don't think I am boring." In fact, an appropriate response would have been to pose this question: "Education has never been more entertaining than it is today; yet learning outcomes have steadily declined almost a la par with the rise in "entertaining" education." Or better yet, "Why does neuorsurgery or nuclear physics or even comp studies have to compete with PS2 and Ninja Turtles?" To reinforce the idea that it is professors who are boring and are to blame, the narrative switches to one astronomy professor endowed generously enough with technological equipment to make most liberal arts professor balk, and apparently endless time on his hands to make cute little overhead displays and multiple choice questions that, one presumes from the documentary set up, regular features of every lecture. Quick shots of students laughing give the impression that students are actually "engaged" when, as a veteran professor, I got the distinct impression that they were "entertained" -- a term which has no definitive connection to learning outcomes.
While the documentary talks about professors having the pressure to publish, it does not bother to remind the viewers what the reason for that pressure is: that a college professor needs to stay informed in her discipline in order to ensure quality of education. A professor who has fallen out of touch with her discipline/field, because, say, she didn't have time to attend conferences, read what others have published and/or contribute articles and research of her own, is of no use to the university or the students.
The discrepancy between state professors shown teaching 120 students and earning 65k in institutions of dubious prestige and private college professors teaching 18 students and earning 130K in highly prestigious private institutions is glossed over at supersonic speed in this otherwise slow and mostly drawn out drama of higher education.
THE POINT THAT THERE IS A DIRECT RATIO BETWEEN HOW MANY STUDENTS A PROFESSOR HAS TO TEACH AND THE OUTCOME OF THAT TEACHING IS NEVER EVEN TOUCHED UPON, even though this is perhaps the most trenchant culprit of declining education.
The rest rants on about the complex politics of college moneys - interesting only to those who understand the field or are in it (like professors and administrators) but, I suspect, largely boring for the general public and too complex to be understood in even these drawn out segments.
Overall this was a disappointment. Someone ought to do a better job.

When a kickboxing police inspector is murdered, his kickboxing twin brother infiltrates the Russian mob in order to see justice meted out--as painfully as possible. A slimmed-down Jean-Claude Van Damme is surprisingly effective as the lead(s), but the real star here is gritty Hong Kong director Ringo Lam (probably best known for City on Fire, the film that inspired Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs), who makes a lethal American debut with this hard-edged, convoluted film, which uses the identical-sibling gimmick to considerably darker effect than the goofball Double Impact. Some incredible stunt work and a terrifically ruthless final reel make this underrated action film a winner, although fans of Species may be somewhat disappointed that costar Natasha Henstridge never fully displays the assets that made her famous. --Andrew Wright

One of JCVD's best movies!!!.......2004-05-01
This was a great flick that had action from start to finsh! If you like a lot of shootouts, car crashes, and SUPER HOT women like Natasha Henstridge then you will love this movie. The director Ringo Lam (from Replicant) does a great job with all the camera angles. The best angles were when JCVD does his shooting and the stunts were amazing. This is plain and simply a great movie.

Anyone who thinks vaccines keep us safe need to watch this DVD!.......2007-01-10
Dr. Tenpenny's video was a very good piece of investigative work. It's highly informative and it's not overly scientific so that average parent could come away with a good understanding of the topic. However, I would have liked to see her go into the physiology beyond the incidence rate of infection. Things such as the fact that vaccines actually chronically over-stimulate the immune system which causes an abundance of free-radicals that can damage the body, especially the brain. If she had connected some of this supporting scientific physiology against vaccines with the CDC data showing that vaccines did not and do not keep us safe from these diseases, I think it would have been several notches more powerful. But, great over-all info nonetheless. My children will never get even one vaccine thanks to Dr. Tenpenny!
Full Plate Of Food For Thought.......2007-01-09
While I am no doctor of any sort, I can tell when something passes the sanity or common sense mark, and this DVD passes both. Most of the information is presented in easy to understand language, although there are some terms I wish were explained. Still, Dr. Tenpenny got her point across well. Her presentation is done using a briefing type format in which she uses slides to go with her verbal information. A really cool part about the presentation is that she gives references so anybody viewing the DVD can look up the information for themselves lest anyone think she is off the mark somewhere. While I cannot completely swallow whole every last tid bit of information Dr. Tenpenny says, there is without a doubt, more than enough good, solid information in this DVD to make anybody that will listen to it, think twice about giving their kid(s) the usual full battery of shots. I won't shy away from the fact that I bought this movie because I am a huge fan of George Eads. If he hadn't been in this movie, I never would've bought it.
Had it not been for him, I probably would've turned it off. He's the only redeeming quality that the movie has to offer. That, and his chemistry with Jamie Pressly . . .
George Hamilton's was better..........2007-06-07
I thought the George Hamilton (1971) biopic of Evel was hokey but Eads' version is simply terrible. This movie is flawed and very poorly thought out. Eads is a good actor on CSI and Jaime Pressly is OK on the TV show "My name is Earl", but they were both miscast in this film. To top it off, the movie opens in 1950 and features a Jerry Lee Lewis song that wasn't even recorded until the LATE 50's! They should have put a song in that was relevant to the times Evel grew up in. To make matters worse, Evel looks 7 in the scene, but he would have been 12 by 1950.
Jamie Pressly plays Linda Bork as a gum-smacking redneck glamor girl with a nasty "southern" accent---in Butte Montana! Linda Bork, by most accounts, was a nice girl who eventually fell in love with Evel, despite his hard ways. In this film, Pressly portrays her as an aggressive, dolled-up hooker-type. To nitpick even more, Knievel had a clean-cut look in the sixties but Eads has a bushy mullet-wig throughout.
Q: Why was Lance Henriksen in this film?
A: To show young Bobby Knievel how to cleanse his bowels by eating the shells of roasted peanuts while incarcerated. What.......? Great actor. Must've needed the money.
One thing the film includes is the death of Evel's father-in-law, played by Beau Bridges. It's a topic that few documentaries or films cover. But when father-Bork dies, the audience has little sympathy due to the poor character development.
If you want to know about Evel, avoid this film (I love Knievel and bought the DVD for a few bucks just to have it in my collection). Get "Spectacular Jumps", "Gladiators" (the longer version of "Spectacular jumps" and watch "Absolute Evel: The Evel Knievel story" with Matthew McConaughey. Also, "Viva Knievel" is a fun 70's film featuring Evel, himself. All of them are fun and informative.
I wish someone would make a film worthy of Evel's contribution to sports, entertainment and pop culture. When Evel Knievel is gone, the "Last of the gladiators" will certainly be missed as a true icon. This movie is a total waste and I can't believe someone would try to pass this movie off as anything other than an overblown Hollywood fantasy. Compared to this film, George Hamilton should have been given an Oscar. Terrible...

This is a great movie about the legend of Knievel, more based on fact than the 1971 movie of the same name. Eads was as cocky as Evel was in real life. Buy it if you are a fan of this American icon!
Less yapping and more jumping........2006-03-13
I don't know jack about Evel Kinevel, so I can't vouch for the accuracy of the story told here, but if Evel was a hard drinkin', hard womanizin' donkeyhole who enjoyed urinating outside and jumping large objects with his motorcycle then I'd say it was pretty accurate.
The story aspect was alright but the jump stuff was barely even touched on. I'd much rather more time was spent on him jumping buses than him arguing with his wife. Who cares? Just jump something! I'd been better off renting a DVD with just jumps on it.
Also I was very upset at the minor role given to Lance Henriksen.

If you want to find out about Evel Knievel avoid this garbage. I don't own it but I saw most of it on tv and was appalled. George Eads was not too bad a choice but they could have found someone better. And what's with the peeing scenes? What kind of a statement were they trying to make????
I never did see the ending of it...it was that lousy. It's a complete disaster.
Someone needs to do a big motion picture about Evel Knievel like they did about Muhammed Ali. The best actor I can think of is Matthew McConaughey as Evel.

I use the movie in my classroom of 10th graders and we do a major writing project after we watch it. THis edition shows the real teacher and the real kids when they were doing the action and it even inspires my kids more. Great information too.
